I was 5 and in Kindergarten, it was a camera and a photo album my aunt had gotten me for Xmas. I also brought my weekly reader with me. #teacherfriends
EBA2: I remember having a fire drill at school and grabbing everything that I brought with me to school for show and tell that day and taking it outside with me. #teacherfriends
Donna from Houston, TX. I'm the Lower School Math Coordinator at an independent K-12 school. I'm excited to be the guest moderator tonight, and I LUV numbers and math more than pizza! #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends I'm a picture book author/illustrator-music-lady-speaker person. I LUV getting to visit in schools in person! Speaking at conferences is my other best, favorite thing.
*You can have more than one best favorite thing. An authority on the matter told me so!
#TeacherFriends This is one of my favorite pictures.... from my school visit on one of our European Army bases in Italy. The daddies are comparing the fabric quilt I made to the end papers in my picture book, "Red, White and Blue."

I am in Indiana, I am elementary ed major finishing after I started 12 years ago. I had to create a twitter account for a class. I am finding my way around alright.

#TeacherFriends Q1: Why is it important for students to develop flexibility with numbers? Did you have to develop flexibility along with your students? If so, describe your journey. What activities are your S's favorites? Links? Photos? Resources?
A1 "Flexibility" is not a word I would associate with the way I learned math. More like "rigidity." My number sense has definitely developed right along with my students. Many of the mental math strategies didn't make sense to me at first. #teacherfriends
A1 When students are flexible with numbers, they can see connections and patterns and math makes more sense. Rather than just memorize isolated processes, they see how it all fits together. Reasonableness is improved. #teacherfriends
I'm Rebecca, a 2nd grade teacher in Lufkin,TX. This is my 4th yr teaching 2nd grade math & each year I fall a little more in ❤ with it! #teacherfriends

#TeacherFriends Q2: In Kinder and 1st, students should master the combinations for all the numbers up to 10. How is that similar to fact families? How is it different? What activities do you find most helpful?
My math wall is already so jam packed but I really like this. I knew I should have taken a picture of it for tonight's chat. I want to make it more kid friendly #teacherfriends
Math is so important for everything else. I always hated math in school but loved science. Chemistry was really tough since I hated the math. #TeacherFriends
A1. Flexibility with numbers is SO important to be able to do mental math! I esp love @MathCoachCorner's "number bond evolution" blog post which highlights my favorite mental math strategy: decomposing! #teacherfriends
A2 To me, fact families focus on a concept (two addition and two subtraction sentences), and it is often only a matter of memorization. Number bonds focus on a number, e.g., all the combinations for 5. It truly stresses part/whole thinking. #teacherfriends
A2:I think they are both very similar, fact families include addition and subtraction and number bonds show the two parts of the numbers #teacherfriends
A1. Flexibility with numbers is SO important to be able to do mental math! I esp love @MathCoachCorner's "number bond evolution" blog post which highlights my favorite mental math strategy: decomposing! #teacherfriends
A2. Fact families for me felt forced. Memorization. The more recent emphasis on understanding that numbers are flexible highlights the associative property of math, which I feel Ts & Ss struggled w/ a lot in the past. #teacherfriends
It's all about where they fall on the number sense trajectory and their developmental understanding of the three aspects of number: quantities, symbols, words #TeacherFriends
place value distributive for 28 x 4 so 20 x 4 and then 8x4. For the addition I would estimate and then subtract to get the exact answer #teacherfriends
A3. 28 x 4 my go to is associative property again! I imagine 28 x 4 as 28 x 2 x 2 and then regroup it in my mind: (28 x 2) x 2... but if I didn't love that so much I'd probably do (20 x 4)+(8 x 4) = 80 + 32 = 112 #teacherfriends
so then how to do you handle those out there that will say oh this is just common core math (which we know it isn't but there are those out there) #teacherfriends
A3: I would add 49 + 6 = 55 + 30 = 85. 28 x 4 = 80 + 32 = 112. We use Math Expressions and it definitely walks us through strategies. We post strategies that they could use if they'd like. #TeacherFriends
This book would have been a lifesaver for me when I was in school, these are the three things I struggled with most, still do to this day, #teacherfriends
I would explain the purpose of teaching with understanding and why flexibility is necessary. Computation can be done by computers--our students need to be flexible thinkers and problem solvers. #teacherfriends
I'd break it down into 10s & 1s, known in my class as the "Break it Down Betsy" strategy, then add from there. I like this strategy because it reinforces expanded form & place value concepts. #teacherfriends
Expanded form is another one of those skills that we taught, but never really used. I love that kids can now see the purpose of doing it. #teacherfriends
A3. 28 x 4 another way I might try it is to overestimate. 30 x 4 = 120, so I know that I overestimated by 2 groups of 4. Therefore, 120 - 8 = 112. #teacherfriends
#TEacherFriends Q4: Fractions are incredibly abstract and often confusing for students. How do you help students develop fraction sense? Projects? Extension ideas? Picture books? Hands on? Manipulatives?
A4 Sometimes we skip the manipulatives with the older kiddos, but with fractions it's essential that they have lots of hands-on experiences to help them visualize the meaning. https://t.co/mdMWtZzs6K#teacherfriends
A4: love ordering fractions on a numberline, folding paper for fractions and counting fractions, 1/4,2/4,3/4,/4/4,5/4,6/4, etc. to help ss see that fractions are numbers too! #teacherfriends
A4: I am just glad we teach simple fractions in K, I hate fractions with a passion. My mom always knows when I am cooking and need to halve something because I call her. #teacherfriends
In my current role it's about helping Ts develop deep fraction understanding. Understanding the 5 common interpretations of fractions is an important place to start. Fractions in various contexts can represent ratios, measures, operators, part/whole, & quotients #teacherfriends

A4 We help students develop "fraction sense" when we ask them to reason about fractions, rather than just memorize procedures, such as finding common denominators. https://t.co/qGpYVVcSRU#teacherfriends
Super late to chat. Since transitioningto upper grade @MathCoachCorner has been one of my go to site. Her website explains the why of math. #teacherfriends
I LUV'd this 'fractions' extension art project in response to my picture book. PreSchool children used 'post it notes' and recombining pieces to whole. #TeacherFriends
Fractions. Geometry. Design.

Sometimes the only time kids are asked to explain their thinking is when they have the wrong answer. All answers should be justified--right or wrong. #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends Q5: Let’s see how many different equations we can generate with an answer of 20. Be creative! What other open-ended tasks do you like to use with students that encourage flexible thinking?
My oldest realized I only asked him why when he got the answer wrong. I realized this too and started asking why when he was right. Threw him for a loop.
#TeacherFriends
Agree! I was in a classroom today and I asked a ss why they organized their work that way (correctly) and she got her pencil ready to erase. We need to change the view of questioning from neg to pos! #teacherfriends

Completely agree! My students have a much stronger understanding of fractions and the how the bigger the denominator, the smaller the pieces. Without manipulatives, I think they would have struggled so much more with that concept! #teacherfriends
One of my fave fraction extensions is to have my students create fraction art a la Ed Emberly's Picture Pie! They create a picture using fraction pieces then add up the pieces & record the total amount. #teacherfriends

I can’t imagine teaching without them. Unfortunately, my classroom did not have any. Thankful for an admin who purchased much needed supplies. #TeacherFriends
