#MasteryChat is a weekly chat with a growing family of educators from around the word focused on teaching better and reaching more students. Topics cover an array of challenges and solutions for teachers of all grade levels and subject areas, admins, and support staff.
#MasteryChat occurs every Thursday at 8:00pm eastern.
The chat was created by team at @thegridmethod, but is hosted by guest moderators each week. Our primary moderators are @techieteachott, @raehugart, and @jeffgargas.
We have 2 minutes left. Just an FYI...the national #masterychat is up next if you want to keep learning. Otherwise, we'll be back on March 15th with @kthomsonky moderating! #boonechat
Hey my wonderful educators who make me better! Catherine from Fresno CA. Currently applied for a master's who is ready to get more inspired to keep motivating others. #masterychat

Hello #masterychat and #mschat.
Melissa, 7th Grade Science from Upstate NY, Excited to be here, not excited about the foot of snow heading here tonight!
Kia ora! I am a student teacher from Auckland, New Zealand. Twitterchat is one of our assignments this semester, hope you don't mind me following along! #MasteryChat
A1: Hi! I’m Kylie and I am currently studying Elementary Education at the University of Wisconsin - Platteville! I’m excited to join you all tonight and learn more about motivation in the classroom! #masterychat
A1 Motivation is uplifting others to create a positive change. Motivation is shared with others and becomes greater when we learn together. Its a foundation of GREATNESS and HOPE. #masterychat
Motivation is tough to define. It's is the driving force behind you achieving your goals. I tell me track athletes, "motivation gets you out the door, discipline keeps you going." #masterychat
Fighting off illness, anxiously awaiting feedback from some people on my book, started the week with kids doing AR projects, Mid week kids are eco crusaders making the world better, tomorrow physics robotics. #masterychat You?
A1: I define motivation as a source coming from outside or within. Personally, I feel like I am intrinsically motivated. Even, on Twitter, I choose to go on chats that help me feel energized and rekindle my passion. #MasteryChat
A1 - Motivation is a students willingness to put forth their best effort in completion of a task or assimilation of new information or knowledge. This can be hard to achieve but powerful to build! #masterychat
A1 Motivation is what gets me out of bed in the morning; I'm an achiever & competitor by nature so for me it's always focused on getting better for my students, my colleagues, my family, my student athletes, etc #masterychat
Dave in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, Canada jumping in a little late.... wishing there were less letters in my intro to where I exist... Loving learning. #masterychat
A1 Doing something that you know you should even in the face of obstacles.
Example: I have yet to find the motivation to get up at 5:00 and exercise. #masterchat
A1) Motivation is doing something for you. Sometimes there's a larger reason, sometimes there isn't. But when you have the opportunity, you do it. #masterychat
A1: setting a high goal, convincing others to obtain that goal like they do it everyday. Relationships are key. You have to build repoire. #masterychat
A1:
Motivation—when my students are engaged and participating without thought of grades or credit, when they take what skill I’m teaching and go—deeper, farther, in different ways than I expected without my prodding. When I’m almost in the way. #Masterychat
A1: In a learning context, motivation is related to a curiosity to delve deeper into a subject. Deep learners are able to draw from a sense of motivation that answers the WHY? #masterychat
A1 The internal drive that pushes us to action.
Also... the occasionally frustratingly difficult character trait we want to help develop in our students #masterychat
A1: motivation is anything or anyone that pushes you to do better and be better. This can be intrinsic or extrinsic. Personally, my students are my motivation! #MasteryChat
I feel like I have been looking in all the wrong places this week for support when I have this amazing #PLN on Twitter. So grateful for all of you whose lights shine so brightly. Let's continue to impact our students! #MasteryChat
It is also about sharing that motivation with others. It becomes more powerful when you are slowly getting yourself back together through encouragement of others. #masterychat
A1:
Motivation—when my students are engaged and participating without thought of grades or credit, when they take what skill I’m teaching and go—deeper, farther, in different ways than I expected without my prodding. When I’m almost in the way. #Masterychat
A1. Motivation is what pushes us to move on to achieve our goals through failure attempts, problem solving, reattempting and repeating until success is completed.#masterychat
I feel like I have been looking in all the wrong places this week for support when I have this amazing #PLN on Twitter. So grateful for all of you whose lights shine so brightly. Let's continue to impact our students! #MasteryChat
At times, motivation can be victim to one's perception. Ex: a student who is motivated to earn a high grade (as opposed to mastery). Perhaps not the best placement of motivation. #masterychat
Colleen ~ HS AP from Long Island, NY! A1 ~ Motivation is the drive to accomplish a tadk, develop your skill base, or become more knowledgeable! Ppl are most successful when that drive comes from within... #masterychat
A1: I define motivation as the ability to keep working on something even when it is not easy. Motivation is something that can definitely be improved over time. #masterychat#gccedu
A2: Motivation in the classroom looks like engagement. It is collaboration and growth not because of grades but because of desire to learn.
#masterychat
A2 - To me motivation and engagement go hand in hand. Motivated students are engaged in their work. They are thinking, they are exchanging, they are creating and they are trying. #masterychat
A2 Motivation in the places Ive seen it happen ,involves about lending a hand to others, not judging each other based on intelligence. Its more of getting each other back up as a team. #masterychat
Motivation through PURPOSE!
I add purpose to Daily Learning through Themed Student Internships sponsored by Local Businesses. .This allows students to thrive under an umbrella of purpose each moment of their day! #masterychat
A2: I see the highest levels of motivation in my students when they are inquiry driven. Students are motivated to learn challenging material that is important to them personally #Masterychat
A2: I am not sure there is a "look" One student motivated to work looks different from another. Are students engaged? They are likely motivated. #masterychat
It is a good time to learn that lesson. Knowing who to go to and when is a skill most new teachers haven't even really considered. You're a step ahead again! #masterychat
A2 - “Make the class yours” - “ Do great work for you.” - “ Only you can determine your own level of greatness.” —- Reflective feedback loop thatcis always positive and focused on students first. #MasteryChat
A2 Students extending an activity on their own w/o prompting, continuing an online simulation after we've already finished the unit; my juniors & seniors seeking out college & loan info on their own to better themselves for the future; my kids are amazing! #masterychat
A2 motivation looks like fun! If something isn't fun many students won't want to do it. It's fun to turn everything into something more exciting. If I'm excited, Ss are excited and want to more! #masterychat#IHMarchMadness
A1&2. Motivation for my Ss is all about their choices in accelerating their learning in a way that most impacts their learning (Hattie 101) @kusch39 ... Intrinsic and unconditional drive to know more and love learning; advocating for that is job #1. #masterychat
A2: motivation looms different for everyone. I may see quiet thinking. Sharing of ideas. Moving about. Smiles, high fives, hugs, pats on the back...really it is endless as to hiw motivation will look. #masterychat
A2: In the classroom, motivation is when students come together to achieve a goal. We have a reading challenge in our room, and it's so cool to see students from all reading levels come together to win for their team! #masterychat
A2) Using extrinsic motivation ( @classcraftgame ) to develop my student's intrinsic desire to succeed. Safe environment where Ss know we are a learning community. A family if you will. #masterychat
A2: I agree, students motivated by learning about things that are important to them, that piques their interest, that has a link to them personally. #masterychat
A2) U know when Ss r motivated b/c they stay on task & regulate themselves. There is an energy about them that doesn't exist when motivation is absent. #MasteryChat
A2 I saw amazing motivation this week when a usually unmotivated student chooses to work on his science project instead of some free time! #MasteryChat
A2: I hope that motivation in my future classroom will look like my students genuinely enjoying the process of learning. I will encourage having a growth mindset so students will feel motivated to learn and enjoy the productive struggle of new topics! #masterychat#gccedu
A2: In my HS ELA Workshop model, student choice in independent reading, daily work logs, and assignments based off their novels build motivation. We conference and chat so students see progress
#masterychat
A2 - Motivation looks like engaged students striving to do their best work as they master content using @thegridmethod. Every student is worried about their own learning goals and growth, getting what they need, when they need it! #masterychat
#masterychat A2: Motivation looks like encouragement. It looks like mastery-based-learning (SBG) so that Ss are motivated to learn from mistakes. Ss know that they are important to the class's learning (because I've told them and Ss have told each other) so they come to SHARE.
A2: I feel like my students are motivated, but I feel like external rewards motivate them more at this age due to them being 6th graders. I read "Punished by Rewards" which made me think about motivation a lot more. I want to push them forward. #MasteryChat
A2. Some of the greatest motivation comes from Ss themselves as they learn from one another.... using Kagan rocks... thanks @jacquiewilson99 for another great day of learning #masterychat
A2: Perhaps it is displayed in the level of empowerment. When Ss are empowered to display agency over their learning, then motivation is a natural product. #masterychat
A2 Motivation in the classroom is seeing the students take ownership of their work without being pushed to be engaged. It is also striving to learn from their mistakes. #MasteryChat
A2:
In my drama class, motivation looks and sounds chaotic to casual passers by. Students are up and moving, creating scenes, critiquing one another, playing with the way they speak, looking for verbs for their objectives, videoing and taking pictures. #Masterychat
A2: Motivation is when they go above and beyond because they are interested, make choices,l in their learning, and take ownership of the work they do #MasteryChat
This sounds outstanding!
This week one of my classes are working at the Walmart as they study Ratio and Unit Rates while the other class is taking on a Police Academy internship focused on solving equations. Busy Busy Math Students #masterychat
A2 ~ Motivation looks different ~ Ss competing for top grades, working hard to do their best, or doing just enough to pass & maintain their eligibility! Far too often the grades of Ss I meet with don’t reflect their true potential! #masterychat
A2: In my classroom motivation looks like always pushing through to meet our next goal. Then a higher one, then a higher one, and an even higher one- all while having FUN doing it 🤗 #MasteryChat
A2 Pure engagement. No worries about the gradebook; sts pursuing their own passions/interests/topics and striving to learn or create something based on that new knowledge. #Masterychat
A2 It looks like cheering ourselves on, cheering each other on; learning how to handle my failures and persevere or when to seek that push from others. We cheer, high five, conference, have class meetings, give shout outs on announcements #MasteryChat
A2: To me, motivation in the classroom looks like trying new things and taking risks with challenging yet achievable tasks in a supportive classroom climate. #masterychat
A2: motivation is evident in any inquiry based or challenging lessons. I try to start off every lesson as open ended as possible which forces them to question and collaborate. I also love competitive activities that really motivates the kids! #masterychat
A2: Great q. I have a lot of positive reinforcements and motivators in my classroom, but lately I’ve been tryin to focus more on fanning my students hearts and internal motivation. #masterychat
A2: When Ss get started with minimal prompting and when that sparks other Ss to as well. Creating an engaging lesson that Ss are interested in and want to be a part of. High enthusiasm. #masterychat
Relationships are key. It’s amazing how teens respond when you listen and give them chances to talk. They are more open to content they historically have disliked if they know you are invested in them #masterychat
A2: Simple, your age isn't an excuse, nor is it a barrier for doing things that matter. This week kids are planning fund raisers, PSAs, environmental activism, and beach cleanups as part of a project where they learned about our local ecosystems #masterychat
Very true. It is a problem we observe and one that we in part cause. @cultofpedagogy has a great blog on motivation that talks about intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation https://t.co/HG91xixcZ4#MasteryChat
A3: Drill and practice. No explore, no innovation, no discussion. Just straight teacher centered classrooms. The teacher does all of the thinking- the students are expected to be sponges. #masterychat
A3. The #1 fastest way to shut my Ss down is to stop them from working at their own pace and learning solely with pencil and paper without collaboration... the world has thankfully changed in our approach to learning... #masterychat
A3 I think negative attitudes destroy motivation! If the vibe is positive and exciting it will keep students (and teachers) wanting to do more! #MasteryChat#IHMarchMadness
A3 - Intrinsic motivation is motivation a student has to better themselves without the consideration of external rewards. This should be the goal for every single student and can always be a focus in the classroom. #masterychat
A3: For me, I was absolutely motivated by my teachers such as @kimdevriesteach, @SraMendozaCS, and others, but I feel like grades destroy motivation but can also increase it if a student is performing well. It goes both ways. #MasteryChat
A2: It depends on the ss! Some ss need verbal praise/encouragement, some need a tangible reward, some need positive notes/phone calls, etc. SS Goal setting is a common factor though, when it is their goal they work so much harder! #MasteryChat
A3: Fixed mindset destroys motivation in schools. When students view themselves as not being able to make any growth, they lose motivation to put in effort and grow. We need to be teachers of impact by encouraging our students to reach their full potential! #masterychat#gccedu
Very true. It is a problem we observe and one that we in part cause. @cultofpedagogy has a great blog on motivation that talks about intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation https://t.co/HG91xixcZ4#MasteryChat
#masterychat A3: What kills motivation? Treating Ts and Ss like they are only the givers and takers of tests. Not acknowledging effort and growth. Treating Ss and Ts like they are there to serve the program, not the other way around.
A3 JUST had a small group student conference about this today! Worry/fear/anxiety about the grade according to four 8th graders. Otherwise, learning and writing has been a joy. #masterychat
Q3 - Lack of relationships. Authoritarian leadership, without listening to others who have experience and opinions. No clear vision of a student first mentality. Evaluations that are driven by solely content and not a holistic approach. #MasteryChat
A3 "Work" instead of learning, doing something for the sake of doing something or because you've done it for the last 10 years, ignoring the unique wants and needs of 21st century learners #masterychat
A3 Lack of student choice, lack of student voice and lack of student ownership. Students naturally take pride in what they have ownership in and what they have stake in; let's empower them to take pride in their work #masterychat
A3: Not trying new things. Too many rules and restrictions. Bad attitudes. Low energy. Lack of good building relationships. Lack of encouragement. Blaming the whole for one. Lack of creative and engaging lessons or incentives. #masterychat
Yes!! Just today I had a group of students filming outside. Probably looked like chaos, but was a student who chose to write her own script, cast it, film it, and now edit it just so she could learn how. #geniushour#masterychat
A3) Feeling disconnected, like you're going through the motions for somebody else and not for yourself. So: schools that aren't accommodating. #masterychat
A3: A lack of communication can destroy motivation; for Ss, Ts, and administration. It's hard to keep going without the help of others. Staying in a healthy stream of communication keeps that motivation up. #masterychat
A3: A pervasive attitude around compliance and "getting it done," rather than curiosity and a desire for excellence, kills motivation in schools. #masterychat
A3 Humans who dont believe in SS potential. We need educators that can spark the entire room, even if its a small touch of enlightenment. Believing in each other creates a more welcoming and effective learning environment. #MasteryChat
A3: When the teacher is dictating the learning or the student is not engaged or involved in the learning process, teacher does not have a professional relationship with the student, outside factors affecting the student (ie. Home life)
#masterychat
A3: Negative faculty/adult energy can destroy motivation in schools. When adults don’t want to be there and feel unsupported, it bleeds down to our students. We must stay motivated and engaged so students know its a safe place to learn and be.
#masterychat
A3: The most influential factor is the organizational culture. It is important that we promote an environment that challenges, motivates, and empowers our students. Outdated procedures and lessons that are not meaningful hurt our students. #masterychat
A3: When Ss possess limited agency over their learning, motivation is negated. Why engage when the academic experience is something done "to" me? #masterychat
A3: Constant negativity. If students are continually told everything they are doing is wrong then they will never want to try again. If you help them find victory even in defeat, they will continue to push to get to the summit of the mountain of knowledge! #masterychat
A3: Narrow constraints stifle motivation. When teachers and students feel like their ability to innovate is limited, they are less likely to be motivated. Motivation derives from feeling empowered. #Masterychat#edchat
A3) We destroy motivation in schools; over testing (we can gather great data from authentic work already happening), ridiculous demands like "be quiet" and "sit up" perfectly; When the classroom revolves around the T instead of the Ss. We are greatly to blame here. #MasteryChat
A3 "Work" instead of learning, doing something for the sake of doing something or because you've done it for the last 10 years, ignoring the unique wants and needs of 21st century learners #masterychat
We do Funk Music Friday in our building & the students love hearing music blasting from Ts rooms between classes! Definitely adds a little pep to their step! #masterychat
A3 The absence, or limited existence, of faculty and staff actively celebrating students' achievements and providing continuous encouragement to continue growing each day #masterychat
A3- I would agree that standardized testing and traditional grading systems can get in the way of student motivation. Some Ss feel they don't measure up. That's why Social and Emotional Learning should be a vital part of any schools curriculum. #masterychat
LOVE LOVE LOVE! @HeculuckDave knows what he is talking about! Yay for student-paced learning and meaningful, collaborative learning experiences! We are getting there, thanks to world-changing thinkers like we have here in #MasteryChat
A3. The #1 fastest way to shut my Ss down is to stop them from working at their own pace and learning solely with pencil and paper without collaboration... the world has thankfully changed in our approach to learning... #masterychat
A3: Motivation is lost when students face content that is either not challenging enough or way too challenging. Either one can really squash the desire to soar! #MasteryChat
A3 - I would add that a lack of relationship between the teacher and the students often leads to lack of motivation. As Rita Pierson says "We won't work for someone we don't like" #masterychat
A3: I think students just get it done due to needing to earn a grade without being a deep learner and wanting to explore more than what is just written. Some want an outcome with minimal work and just want to be done. #MasteryChat
Aren't those days wonderfully refreshing? ... as opposed to the string of days where I'm going through a whole toolbox of motivational techniques. #masterychat
I use both standards-based-grading (my own method) and I only use a 60 point scale on anything.....specifically 40-100. And I think it's been YEARS since anyone demonstrated such little knowledge that the work earned a "40." #masterychat
In some abstract way, nothing should be able to destroy authentic motivation. Regardless of what happens to an individual, he/she still can control the level of personal motivation. #masterychat
A4: Something that drives the passion and interest in learning for the students. Make connections to real-life situations for the kids. #makeitreal#instantrelevance#masterychat
A3: my answer before joining this chat would have been Testing, testing, testing. Now it is lame lessons and busy work. Do what you can, not complain about what you can’t. #masterychat
Earlier this year they did water testing out on a boat. We analyzed the data and I challenged them to find ways to help. They have come up with great ideas and we have been getting wonderful support from admin and the community. #masterychat
A3:
Motivation killers: When someone is the class or outside belittles our work. (Just an exploratory) When I try to teach more traditionally. When I’m too much in the way! #Masterychat
A4: Intrinsic motivation is the desire to do something for the sole purpose that it benefits your well being. Not expecting to get a tangible reward. #masterychat
A3 ~ Negative relationships btwn Ss & Ts! Ss will not likely work for Ts they don’t like. Also, the relevance of a lesson is key! Ss find it difficult to work hard to master a skill or concept when they don’t understand the application to the real world! #masterychat
It’s a blast! I brought back Boy Band Friday a few weeks back and it was hilarious for Ss to hear @NSYNC & @backstreetboys and think of it as “old” music! #masteryChat
In reply to
@PHausTech, @RaeHughart, @NSYNC, @backstreetboys
A3: If we want to make others feel as inspired and motivated as they can we have to make an undying commitment to positivity. It’s contagious always and will trickle everywhere. #MasteryChat#JoyfulLeaders
A3: I’ve found that a lack of love and genuine support steals my Ss motivation faster than anything else. I fight to love throughout the day and provide encouragement to my little balls of constant energy, even when they all need me at exactly the same time. #masterychat
A4 Teaching motivation can be challenging but is possible. Utilizing goal setting, Keeping Ss within their Zone of Proximal Development and focusing on the value of failure and struggle (FIRST ATTEMPT IN LEARNING = F.A.I.L.) can all help build this in learners #masterychat
A4: I define intrinsic motivation as motivation coming from within. There are no outside factors that are contributing to the motivation, instead the student does something because they WANT to. #masterychat#gccedu
By May they will have voiced their concerns about seismic testing, created PSAs for our local TV Station, organized several beach cleanups, a stream restoration, and multiple fundraisers for environmental organizations #masterychat
A4) When one is motivated from within; There are no external factors motivating the person; the motivation is created from within the person. #masterychat
A4) I feel like I am intrinsically motivated. I joined Twitter about a year ago and have been active on it due to motivating myself to take an hour and learn alongside amazing educators. I do not necessarily need someone creating a path for me. #MasteryChat
So true. How do we find a way to get to what all of us really want (engaged students driving and shaping their learning) within these systems and structures in which we find ourselves? That is a puzzle #MasteryChat
hahaha...I feel like there are so many times that my room looks like it's in disarray - I call it "Organized Chaos." But these are the times where the students are owning their learning and are really engaged. #Masterychat
A4: intrinsic motivation is that voice inside your head that tells you never to give up. It tells louder than the doubt and has any fear shaking in it's boots. #masterychat
A4: Intrinsic = Intriguing for you... satisfies your soul and no external reward is needed. To put it simple, it makes your heart happy 👍🏼 #Masterychat
A4: Intrinsic motivation is directly linked to a person's WHY. Its comes from within and perseveres through challenges and isn't reliant on rewards or grades.
#masterychat
A4: the warmth and nourishment generated by encouragement, followed by a lot of listening from an adult/mentor who asks, “tell me more...” #masterychat
A3. Boredom. Years ago I got bored of my own lessons so I made changes. Less and less sage on the stage and more guiding. Ss like doing things. #MasteryChat
To find a student’s intrinsic motivation you must know the student. Each and everyone of them. I say it all the time, a teachers must make connections. #masterychat
A4: GAHHH BIG WORDS. Intrinsic motivation is that warm fuzzy feeling you get when you set a goal, work hard and chip away at it, then achieve it. It feels like drinking a warm cup of coffee on a snowy day with your feet up, or crossing the finish line at a race. #masterychat
A4 Intrinsic motivation is essential as part of a growth mindset, since it will keep you striving forwards to reach a goal, even in the face of struggle and failure. No "carrot"required. #masterychat
This. Yes. Read this. Spot on. Nothing kills motivation like forcing compliance without reason. Sometimes compliance is necessary (like in a fire drill). Often, it is way too much the focus to the detriment of learning! #MasteryCHat
A4: I like placing intrinsic motivation in the context of metacognition, an awareness of the way thinking is done, a self-reflective approach to learning. Being self-aware. #masterychat
A4 Intrinsic motivation is about doing YOU. Whether it is a walk around town, or sitting under a tree seeing cars pass by. Its that MOTIVATION within you that makes you better to perform with others. #masterychat
A4: for me intrensic motivation is the same as motivation, a want and desire. Without want and desire the external motivation isn't going to IGNITE the internal. #masterychat
A4. For some it is simple increase in their attendance... for others it is an insatiable thirst for more challenges, more advances to the next unit, more requests to share work. Learning without trying! It is an enormous snowball that starts with us... the teacher! #masterychat
A3) I feel like you can also lose motivation when you are faced with negativity. After all, when a flower does not bloom, you fix the environment and not the flower. Positivity is crucial, and when a person feels happy, he/she is more likely to do more. #MasteryChat
A3: the biggest killer of motivation is fear and doubt. Fear allows students to say I can't, I won't, and let's them want to stay in their comfort zone. #masterychat
#masterychat A4: I can't define it, but I know it when I see it. An AP Stats student recently decided that to answer a question, he would build a program (completely code it) to run a simulation to answer it. The question was NOT offered with reward. Just a hypothetical.
A2: motivation looks like students not afraid to try and risk failure because they know in the end they will grow and be able to push through obstacles #masterychat
A4 ~ Working hard to achieve a goal for the sheer purpose of accomplishing the goal! Motivation comes from within to please /satisfy oneself... #masterychat
A4 Wanting to do more because you love what you do, not because you get handed an arbitrary judgment that supposedly tells you what you are worth #masterychat
We reward them for working their best during the actual test with a relaxing and fun remainder of the day. Board games, audio books, outside recreation... #masterychat
A4 The inner determination, grit, and drive that propels an individual to accomplish goal(s), regardless of barriers they have have to endure on the way to success #masterychat
A4: That little voice that tells you “good job”. When I’m proud of myself I can’t help but smile/awkward laugh. You want to give yourself a pat on the back and it’s developed in classroom when we tell Ss we’re proud of them esp when it’s something Ss passionate abt. #masterychat
To me its all about relationships. There are so many ways to teach things, with relationships and trust amazing routes can be found to the same knowledge.
I understand that there are times when people have to say no. But, no should come with reasons, or no but maybe we can try this. Alternatives matter. Not just a straight shut down. #masterychat
Interesting the way we speak about "finding" one's motivation (as if it were lost). Perhaps we can encourage Ss to "develop" their motivation to engage in deep learning. #masterychat
A4 - Frequently it is mentioned that we can’t drive internal motivation. This is faulty on every level. Teaching is all about helping students to develop that internal motivation to learn, socialize, adapt and make positive change. Great teachers do this everyday! #masterychat
#masterychat A4 Intrinsic Motivation is the desire to achieve from within. IMO this is a HUGE goal of an educator. You want to inspire students to learn intrinsically. The following e-mail chat is a testimony to this.
Motivating students is no different than motivating adults. If there is no agency, voice, choice, and celebratory moments motivation plunges. #MasteryChat
A4 Intrinsic motivation comes from within a person, self-motivation. The person is in control of pushing themself through their work goals without any external influences what-so-ever. #masterychat
Bridget! You get it! Yes!
Learning has nothing to do with a Grade. All a student needs is Feedback, a "grade" is simply just checking a box at the end as student prove mastery! Love Learning #masterychat
A3) I feel like it is hard to venture on your own and try something new because of the many obstacles and fear of failure. I face obstacles and try to inspire pre-service teachers, but I am not perfect. I make mistakes, but I have to find motivation to keep going. #MasteryChat
This is an interesting point - "no" for me has definitely been a motivator a few times in my life but I have to realize that just because it lit a fire under me, doesn't mean that it'll do the same for my students #masterychat
Love this! When we feel off, whether it is boredom or frustration or fatigue, it is time to change something! Dig until you find what changes you need to make! #MasteryCHat
A3. Boredom. Years ago I got bored of my own lessons so I made changes. Less and less sage on the stage and more guiding. Ss like doing things. #MasteryChat
Perhaps, but if NO is the standard, and not, not yet or no but maybe try this, you will get people to stop trying. You also start encouraging people to ask for forgiveness rather than permission, which is bad for culture #masterychat
A3) Like the flower analogy I used, sometimes a student needs more than what is on our lesson plan. Although it is hard, sometimes, we have to reflect and change our environment to make students feel safe and secure to take risks and explore. #MasteryChat
Sorry guys, missed the beginnings day just jumping in because this is such a fantastic conversation I wish more people were having. Even adults struggle to be motivated in some aspects of their life. (Me: working out) so I get how kids feel #MasteryChat
A5 - Building Intrinsic motivation is absolutely more valuable to Ss. Sometimes however you need to start with “extrinsic” and reduce over time to build student intrinsic motivation. This requires direct discussion, and modeling for learners, but don’t ever give up! #masterychat
A5: I don't know if you can necessarily teach intrinsic motivation, but I would call it encouraging it. Encourage students to determine the purpose they are doing a task and connect that to how it feels to do something well and accomplish a goal. #masterychat
A4: those Ss don't need motivating. They get As because they want to be the best. But some Ss have different motivating factors. Some just want a dad. #masterychat
A5: I have started grading a lot less. Also when students ask me "Is this graded?" I pause and look at them and when they ask why I am not saying anything, I say, "I'm just wondering why you wouldn't want to try your absolute best on something." #masterychat
A5: Model, Model, MODEL! We should teach intrinsic motivation as something that makes your heart jump for joy just because! RECOGNIZE and SHARE those small, meaningful moments. #masterychat
OMG! One year I ate a BOX A DAY (Tagalongs) and gained 7 pounds in 7 days!!! 4 at a time, mind you. (4 after breakfast, 4 w/lunch, 4 after school, 4 before bed - it IS possible.) ;) #masterychat
A5. I model it. Ss ask a question I don’t know and I tell them that’s interesting. Let’s figure it out together. Eventually they start doing that when they have questions. #MasteryChat
A5: Motivation can't be taught. Teachers can help guide students towards discovering their WHY and give resources, support, and belief in them to follow it to realize their dreams.
#masterychat
A5 Model it for the Ss, help them find their passion - like so many other parts of effective education, it comes down to building relationships w/ Ss so we truly know them & can unlock their passion & goals #masterychat
Maybe when they do them this year! They make a review presentation, then they have to give another group's presentation with no prep. It is fun, a little stressful, but I also let them make one for me and I give the whole thing. #masterychat
A5: Following inquiry based learning, involving the student in the learning process as much as possible so the classroom is filled with things that they are passionate about. Modelling the behaviour. #masterychat
A5: This is tough because I feel like you can't necessarily teach it... it's something that an individual needs to come to. I try to model that intrinsic motivation to students through my running. Lately, they've been hearing a lot about my marathon training. #masterychat
A5 A great way to teach Intrinsic motivation is by first teaching about YOU as the person. Explore the qualities that make YOU be awesome. Its also about celebrating them. We all deserve to celebrate everything. Its the journey that matters. #MasteryChat
A5 I am not sure you can necessarily teach intrinsic motivation but we can provide opportunies for Ss to experience it through authentic learning. Once they experience it I believe they will want more! #masterychat
A5 Teach confidence. Teach sts their ideas and questions are important, relevant, and heard. Going too far beyond that might keep the motivation from being truly intrinsic. #Masterychat
A5: Almost an oxymoron, no? 😄 Leading by example, cultivating those relationships, many deep personal and data driven conversations. It takes time when done properly, that’s for sure! #MasteryChat
A5: Teachers can teach intrinsic motivation by modeling it. If they show that they are excited about learning, eventually the students will be excited too! They also can teach it by making the classroom a place that values hard work! #masterychat#gccedu
A2 When Ss don’t want to transition from the activity they are working on. When a S asks to take home materials to finish. When they can’t wait to share their thinking on Seesaw #masterychat
A5 Hmmm, I don't if you teach it as much as nurture it. Once they feel success I think it is easier to harness the power of motivation. You gotta find something that they want to do, and use it to your advantage. #masterychat
A5) I do not think you can teach intrinsic motivation. One professor I had said that he wished he had more students who take this profession as seriously as I do which made me smile, but it made me realize that I am venturing beyond the status quo. #MasteryChat
A5: In PreK, we talk about how good it makes you feel to do your best. For me, as their teacher? Tons of praise for my Ss, so they learn that doing their best has value. #MasteryChat
A5: you make it okay to fail. You let kids know not everything in life has a point value but you do the task because it shows you care. Your perspective impacts your attitude. #masterychat
A5: Perhaps it can't be taught, but Ts can create the right environments for Ss to tap into motivation centers. Metaphor of the right soil in which the seed can grow. #masterychat
A5 - It's important not to succumb to the temptation of using goodies or treats to have young students complete tasks or be compliant. We can't expect intrinsic motivation if we are reenforcing the opposite. #masterychat
I was talking w/ a group of 3rd graders about this today. The motivation to do what is needed because you want to not just because you will get something. Hard to learn for some of our kiddos. #masterychat
A5 ~ Teaching with passion and inspiring Ss to see the value of what they are learning. Modeling ~ Discussing your own passions and how you pursue learning more and improving your skills! #masterychat
A5:
I don’t know how we can teach it, but I think we can point it out when we see it. We can discussing as a learning community. I need help with this one!! 😳#Masterychat
I feel like that's the only way to "teach" it is through modeling. If Ss see you do it and be successful with it, they'll learn by watching and want to try. #masterychat
A5. Beyond any other concept in learning, teaching motivation is like teaching wisdom; it must be modelled by showing your own need to learn and master ideas as a teacher... if you show that you learn every day, then so will Ss. Model this one don't teach it! #masterychat
a5 I don't think motivation is taught so much as it is caught. We are born with survival instincts but if we don't perceive something as necessary for survival... #masterychat
A5) I think it is important to help our students find their passion because, oftentimes, that passion is the stepping stone to figuring out what motivates them. I am motivated by student success and giving 110 %. I want my students to know I care. #MasteryChat
I love inquiry based learning, involving the student in the learning process as much as possible. Then, add purpose and make the WHY evident every day of learning. Otherwise, WHY Bother? #masterychat
A5- I teach intrinsic motivation by praising effort and perseverance in my class. I encourage students to set goals and help them to reflect on their progress. I read stories of others who have overcome obstacles. Also, Ted talks for inspiration. #masterychat
A5: getting to know what motivates my students! As a teacher I try to demonstrate how passionate I am about their success which can ignite intrinsic motivation within my students. #masterychat
A5 - Model it, explain it, make the lessons about choice and not grades. Also, letter writing about the process of growth. Reflection of how to improve both in and out of the classroom. #masterychat
While I understand your thinking I’m going to pushback slightly and say that “intrinsic” motivation comes easier for some. I would argue you can help students build these skills, it can absolutely be challenging though. #masterychat
I think that making the connections is very important!!! In elementary school we're teaching the foundational skills and it's so hard sometimes for my 3rd Graders to understand the importance of what they are learning. #Masterychat
A5: Giving affirmation to Ss who do their own thing and aren’t afraid of judgement. I think this helps them build confidence and it also shows other Ss to be proud of their uniqueness too. Telling Ss it’s okay to be wrong. Asking how they did +developing positivity. #masterychat
It’s definitely tricky to “teach” w/o allowing the Ss to see it in you first. It sometimes just “happens”; there’s no perfect solution but all we can do is strive to make it happen! #masterychat
Everyone has something they are interested in, despite how far removed it may be from the classroom. Surely there must be a way to involve all students and encourage them. #masterychat
A5. A positive atmosphere for learning which encourages the love of learning of the individual! A teacher who believes in the Ss and gives them the care and love to succeed. #masterychat
A5: I love the quote "Allow your passion to become your purpose, and it will one day become your profession". My teachers have helped rekindle my passion for teaching, and it truly did become my purpose. Lets help students find their passion. #MasteryChat
Q5: Teaching intrinsic motivation is 100 deliberate decisions throughout my day. It requires that I make room in my day to teach heart & character to my S, not just behavior. I also need to know my Ss well & what obstacles might make it difficult to tap into that. #masterychat
I do think there is a link between confidence & motivation. A S is unlikely to be highly motivated to do something if it feels unrealistically difficult #masterychat
A5: teach intrinsic motivation by helping Ss to identify/name emotions when something good has happened to or by them. So next time they feel it they know it wss because what happened not what they physically got. #masterychat
A5: Building classrooms that are #selfpaced and use mastery based grading build intrinsic motivation. Students no longer receive completion grades so they become driven to truly learn content and showcase their mastery #Masterychat
The IDEAL: when Ts can line up the curriculum with Ss motivation. A synergy where all parties in the learning process are driven by their own personal WHYs. #masterychat
A5 I try to pay attention to what's important to them and talk about how they improve in that area and then try to help them translate it in their school life. All about building relationships for me. #MasteryChat
A6 - At this point in the year you know your students very well. Utilize the relationships you’ve built, the trust they have in you, and their insterests to leverage their motivation and engagement in your classroom! #masterychat
A6: Intrinsic motivation is far superior to external throughout life, personal or professional. The vital skill is to know which is which.
#masterychat
YES! There is always a way to motivate. The First Step - Get to know your students through building relationships. What do they love? What do they hate? How can you help make their passions come alive? #masterychat
This is a broken record! What’s is our job? A million things that never get measured. I don’t care if I get a check box for having an objective listed. I do care if students come see me everyday. I do care if they have a voice. I definitely care if they love class
#masterychat
A6: Volunteering and Service Learning Projects! Let's teach our students to spready joy and love by showing kindness towards others without any reward expected! #MasteryChat
A5 Jumping in to the chat late....It begins by building a relationship w Ss & incorporating their interests. When you connect learning to their life, the intrinsic motivation will follow. #masterychat
A5. Beyond any other concept in learning, teaching motivation is like teaching wisdom; it must be modelled by showing your own need to learn and master ideas as a teacher... if you show that you learn every day, then so will Ss. Model this one don't teach it! #masterychat
A5) Change the conversation from "is this graded?" to "everything is evidence of your learning". Engage students in self-assessment. Help them understand what they're working towards... it's not a grade. They just don't always know that! #masterychat
Let's start showing our students this now - rather then always focusing on the distant future. Through Purposeful Learning, lessons should include content, soft skills, and adult models to add value to the learning NOW & Later #masterychat
A6: it has to be intrinsic motivation. The real world is built on people finding a will and drive. What happens when the sticker and grades go away. You have to have developed that internal motivation to propel yourself forward. #masterychat
A6 Bring the world to them or bring them to the world. I have my Personal Finance class be as relevant as possible; my Ss mock apply for credit cards & loans, colleges & jobs. We set aside time to look for scholarships or apartments for after graduation; it's real! #masterychat
A6: Intrinsic. Not everyone is going to give you praise or recognition. By teaching Ss not to stop until they're proud helps prepare them for life outside of school where sometimes they'll have look within themselves when outside motivation isn't available #masterychat
Exactly -- my perception of motivation may be quite different than my Ss. But I can create a context that calls for their use of motivation. #masterychat
Yes YES. Can you teach someone how to be motivated? I think you can build a culture of a growth mindset where motivation is expected to keep trying no matter what. GRIT.
#masterychat A6: Both exist in the real world. I exercise, act, sing because I love it. I pay my taxes because I have to. That said, I don't prepare my Ss for the real world......because I don't know what that's going to look like in 10 years. I prepare them to be LEARNERS.
A6 If we don't transform school instructional strategies, grading practices, curriculum then we'll always be asking why kids are not more motivated. #masterychat
A6. Intrinsic Motivation is the best motivation to prepare Ss for the real world. They need to be in control of their own learning, questioning, setting goals in life, jobs, college, family, etc. #masterychat
A6 Intrinsic motivation is by far more effective. If Ss dont learn how to LOVE themselves first, then they wont be able to love the rest. Like one speaker once said " It All Starts With You". As educators, we must model it. #masterychat
A6) I believe intrinstic it more important. How many times have we hae9rd and experienced it ourselves, that if we do something that we love we will never work a day in our lives. #Masterychat
A6 - Giving students control and power over their learning is the most powerful motivating force I have seen. It doesn't just prepare them for the real world, it IS the real world. #masterychat
#masterychat A6: Both exist in the real world. I exercise, act, sing because I love it. I pay my taxes because I have to. That said, I don't prepare my Ss for the real world......because I don't know what that's going to look like in 10 years. I prepare them to be LEARNERS.
A6: Successes & Failures, both of which will become regular parts of life outside the classroom and as they enter the adult world. Learning to accept and acknowledge each of these on a smaller scale helps make for a smooth transition. #MasteryChat
I used to hate the idea of retakes but I've really come around and better understand the purpose and benefits of a second chance assessment. Still running into issues with students who ask about the retake before we've even managed the first assessment...#masterychat
A6: Intrinsic motivation is more important than external to prepare students for the real world. Intrinsic motivation helps students avoid peer pressure hopefully avoid negative influences. #masterychat
A5: my Ss are also all about data. They know where they are, where they need to go, how to get there. We also know where everyone wise is. Competing never killed anyone. #MasteryChat
A6) “We leave lucrative jobs to take low-paying ones that provide a clearer sense of purpose.” Intrinsic motivation all.the.way. @DanielPink#masterychat
A6: In an ideal world we would only have to act on intrinsic motivation. However the real world poses challenges such that we all need to be responsive to extrinsic motivators. High school students must understand the power and value of both #Masterychat
A6: intrensic motivation is thw best life skill. As adults not always appriciated. Don't always get pats on backs, bonus for job well done etc; but knowing you make a difference through what you have done is the best payment. #masterychat
#MasteryChat Sorry I missed most of it! I was moderating @DEStudentvoice! A6 The best motivation is the true desire of the students! Almost NO students need remediation for a driver’s test!
A6: One can make the argument that our Ss are presently in the "real world." They have experiences and challenges that are very real and that call for all kinds of motivation to handle them. #masterychat
A6: IN is def the best. You need to learn to be your own cheerleader bc other ppl aren’t always going 2notice or be there. Also, you know what your best work is, where 2push yourself, and when to give up. Ss need 2be able to self reflect and constructive criticize. #masterychat
A6: Well I don’t have enough money to give them all paychecks... jokes aside. Biggest motivator is giving them the mindset that they can do great things because we as their teachers believe that they truly can! #masterychat
I just thought of praise. Instead of saying "you are so smart", say "I really liked how you worked so hard". Praise effort instead of performance because that can push a student to continue working hard instead of being worried about that perception being changed. #MasteryChat
Letting them know it is part of life to fail sometimes. Model that for them and show them that you can grow from a fail and be better and stronger. @SSCMSStallions#masterychat
A6 - Intrinsic, but also realizing that drivers will often make extrinsic important. This is especially the case as they get older. I don’t try my best because of money (extrinsic) but rather for love of students. This can be hard for a 1st year teacher. #masterychat
A6) How do we create this type of intrinsic response in students? “When the reward is the activity itself--deepening learning, delighting customers, doing one's best--there are no shortcuts.” #masterychat
A6. Intrinsic motivation should be part of what you want to do in the world- the driving force. Once in a while some external motivation is nice (like if I work hard, I could take a nice vacation). #MasteryChat
#masterychat A6 Intriscally Motivated people #Believe in who they are. They are on the pathway to finding their talents and the reason to "why am I here." THIS SHOULD BE A HUGE GOADL OF EACH EDUCATOR.
A6 ~ Intrinsic is the ideal, but extrinsic motivation is often helpful at the HS level to help Ss get through specific courses. I have seen Ss struggle in specific courses & thrive in others. Sometimes you just have to get thru somethings to study what you want! #masterychat
A6: The ultimate achievement is to facilitate the development of intrinsic motivation in every student in order to build the brightest future for our world. #MasteryChat
Must we separate the two types of motivation? As long as Ss exhibit deep learning and achieve mastery, the type of motivation is not important. #masterychat
A7: I believe both external and internal motivation is important. As their T I hope that my Ss will overflow w internal motivation and be awesome adult humans. However, external motivation is real life— you get rewarded for your effort & skills. It’s a balance, IMO. #masterychat
I wish I'd left a high paying job. After a few years. Of being highly paid. Maybe that's they don't pay teachers highly! So we never leave! Genius! #masterychat
A6 I think doses of both with a heavy emphasis on intrinsic over extrinsic. We all need outside factors to urge us into action on occasion but that inside motor needs to be the driving force in all things #masterychat
A6: I think the best and most important thing we can do is help students figure out what motivates them. I love The Motivation Breakthrough by Richard LaVoie! If you haven't read it you need to! #MasteryChat
A6 For me, it's both.I feel that they need intrinsic to always push themselves because they won't always have us cheering in their corner, but also, for real world, I'd like them see the benefit of finding a self-sustaining career that also brings them joy #masteryChat
A2) It varies by kid and adult. Sometimes it is extra recess sometimes it is throwing a football with me. Sometimes it is a birthday lunch, sometimes it is the ability to leave early. #Masterychat
HAHA that comes with time! Dont worry! Keep with it! Is there a specific concern you have in mind right now?! Throw it at the #masterychat Family! Let us help!
A6: both motivations are present in everyday lives, but I believe that intrinsic motivation helps students develop to the best version of himself or herself. #MasteryChat
A2)Many things! Sometimes trying to get the most table points, DOJO points, a skittle, trying to make a creation their own, being first, finishing to do something else, etc. #MasteryChat#IHMarchMadness
I try to be very intentional about the praise I give. This may seem silly but many of my students spoke/read in very low voices - so when a S uses a projected voice I praise them for that....I have many more loud speakers than I did when the year first started. #Masterychat
A6 I think both have a place sometimes. I still reward myself after doing something I don't really want to. I eat sour patch kids while I grade sometimes. 1 per paper. #masterychat
A6: I’m really striving to find ways to provide authenticity and audience. For example just did persuasion & tasked them with choice of argument and invited parents and principal to attend. Kids were highly motivated and very excited #MasteryChat
A7: Motivational Tip: Hang in there. Your hard works is paying off even if you don't see it from day to day. Keep looking towards the big picture. #masterychat
A7 - “Be the change you want to see in the world” - Ghandi : As teachers we create a vision in our students of the future. WE have the power to impact change and create a better future for both education and society as a whole. #masterychat#teachbetter
I always believed that the power of language MATTERS! Why? Bc the way you say things, will have an impact with the relationships you create. Like one counselor of mine once said "its not that if I will try", its a " I will achieve it and be awesome! #MasteryChat
I just thought of praise. Instead of saying "you are so smart", say "I really liked how you worked so hard". Praise effort instead of performance because that can push a student to continue working hard instead of being worried about that perception being changed. #MasteryChat
A6. As a teacher I can say that this career (3rd one) has given the greatest intrinsic motivation. Sometimes intrinsic motivation in education helps Ss compile strength... extrinsic motivation of life is too often $.... we must help teach otherwise. #masterychat
#masterychat Sometime students need a little extrinsic motivation to get them started, but then...they should be engaged genuinely! That’s just good teaching!
A6: Both forms of motivation are necessary for the real world! Intrinsic motivation is extremely valuable, but in the real world students need to recognize the extrinsic factors that lead to them doing things (ex: need to go to work to make money)! #masterychat#gccedu
Keep Going!
You are making more of an impact than you may think. Remember, you are someone's reason to keep coming to school - whether you know it or not. #masterychat
A7 Remember your "why" for this amazing calling called teaching. Focus on small growth & success, don't be afraid to spice up your class & toss in some flair! #masterychat
I just want them to value the chance to show their learning the first time around and use the retake for what it is intended for: a chance to learn from mistakes so they don't need the retake later on! I'm sort of stuck... #masterychat
A7: Follow @cultofpedagogy's advice and find your marigold. Find someone to celebrate victories with you and to weather the storms with you too. Knowing you are not alone can be a powerful motivator for anyone. #masterychat
A6) I think getting students to develop intrinsic motivation is important because no one will do things for them. I am grateful that I developed intrinsic motivation because I find something in me that pushes me to keep going. #MasteryChat
Don’t be afraid to try something different. If it works, great. If it doesn’t, even better. Show them that taking risks and learning from that is so powerful!! #MasteryChat
#masterychat A7: No matter what is going wrong, YOU ARE THE VARIABLE. You can change it. You can, in the remaining weeks, become the teacher you wanted to be this year....and plant the seed for who you will be next year. One catch: You have to forgive yourself.
A5 It can’t be taught, but it can be fostered and developed. Provide Ss opportunities to create and make choices. Their enthusiasm will infect others #masterychat
A6: While most people respond to extrinsic, the happiest people are those who intrinsically motivate themselves. We need to help students start to find what drives them. #masterychat
A6) A former teacher sent me this a while ago @Sra_Shalash. "Just listening to all you have going on, and where your strength comes from within you, I hope all my students find that push in themselves, the way you have within you and meet all their goals!"
#MasteryChat
A7: thuz is a stressful time, but we have more time to continue making a difference. Look at the growth and acheivement already ontained this year. Keep it going. WE'VE. GOT. THIS! #masterychat
A7: As a pre-service teacher, I am still learning! But right now, I would give the advice of really encouraging your students to see their full potential. Once they realize that they are capable of so many things, they can do whatever they set their mind to! #masterychat#gccedu
Q7 - Chapter in a book I’m writing. One of my favorite lessons of all time. Avoid the Gas Gap! Got it from a friend. Look at your motivation compared to kids. Gas means - Give a .... compared to students. We must always GAS as much or more than them. #masterychat
A7: try something new and fun. There’s nothing more motivating than a rockstar lesson. Reach out to your colleagues and PLN to get help and hugs too! #MasteryChat
A7 Surround yourself with ppl that want you to succeed. By having that positive encouragement, it can make you into a better person for others to learn from. DONT EXPERIENCE IT ALONE! GET CONNECTED! #masterychat
A4)Doing something for yourself, not because someone else suggested it, tried to make you do it or guilt you into it. You do it purely to make yourself happy.#masterychat#IHMarchMadness
We should talk through this more some time! However, short answer : Retakes should not be an easy process. Nevertheless, if the student wants to increase their knowledge, regardless of the time frame, isn't that a good thing?
Lets talk strategy some time soon! #masterychat
A7: I would want to ask reflecting questions at this point. What was your favorite lesson this year? What lesson did your Ss rock? What is one area of growth you’ve had? What is one thing you could still do? How have you PD’d this year? What S have you impacted most? #masterychat
A7: When teaching high school seniors honesty is powerful. The challenges of college and career programs cannot be understated. When students are aware of the habits of mind needed to succeed they are likely to be motivated. #Masterychat
A7) This job is hard. We start the year with so much drive and passion and in the following months our energy is sucked by the daily grind. We forget to pause and anchor ourselves in our purpose. Taking even a moment to do so is energizing. #masterychat
A7:
Be honest with your Ss. I was struggling the other day. I didn’t go into everything, just told them that I was struggling, having a hard time, but that I came because our work makes me so happy. It was an awesome day because they knew I wanted to do our work. #Masterychat
A7: Remember the reason you were called to this vocation and remember the importance of building relationships with your learners. Be positive! #masterychat
#masterychat A7 NEVER EVER GIVE UP on the Ss you don't think you are reaching. KEEP POSITIVE! Teachers that build relationships GENERATE JOY! If you don't build the relationships, you will burn out. LOVE YOUR STUDENTS! #Believe in them! YOU WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
A7: Take the time to teach heart & character— it requires extra time & effort, but it’s so worth it. That tone you want to ignore, that comment you aren’t sure you over heard, that Ss who hasn’t been picked by peers lately— investigate & teacher through them all! #masterychat
Self reflect constantly. Look at our daily behaviors and attitudes to see if they match what we think they should be. Body language and our voice can tell students more than we think. #masterychat
A7) I have broken down a few times this week, so I needed this chat. I would tell them to keep shining their lights and moving forward because, as @jaycpercell tweeted, he said to keep letting my light shine bright. Do not let that light fade. #MasteryChat
A7: Teaching is perhaps the most under appreciated profession. However, there is a moral power in teaching, in encouraging others to learn and develop. At end of day, lives are influenced & hopefully for the better. #masterychat
A7. Learn from your Ss. They will be your guide. They will tell/show you what motivates them and adapt to it. Hesitant Ss are being challenged and are wrestling with it. Help them come out on top. #MasteryChat
A7 Always remember what called you into this profession, keep your mind open during tough days to always see that sparkle that's hidden but there, incorporate your passions, and always believe in you and your Ss because there will always be someone that doesn't #MasteryChat
A7 - The best teachers are also learners. Learn from your colleagues. Learn from the students. Learn through reading and interacting with educators around the world. The learning is the motivation for you and your students. #masterychat
Q7: #Gamification and game-based learning are perfect for review. Since we are late in the year and are about ready to prepare for testing, #masterychat
I am motivated by all of you to push myself forward and keep striving to be the best teacher I can be. Thank you all for being driving forces in my life who keep me energized and focused on my why. #MasteryChat
Retakes are hard when we don't fully internalize the purpose behind reassessment. Reassessment doesn't have to be a fancy event. I've worked with several of my PLCs to create sustainable structures and I love that there's team work happening right here in this #masterychat
A5)At my grade level, verbalizing my thinking about why I am doing what I am doing to model that motivation. Pointing out examples in children's books, it can be subtle.#masterychat#IHMarchMadness
Retakes need to be reframed as opportunities to showcase mastery. Student need to approach assessments as opportunities as opposed to barriers #masterychat#edchat

During A+ period (50 minutes unscheduled) today, I had 4 Ss come to re-assess on various topics of their choice. One young lady earned credit on 7 skills. Raw average (not grade!) jumped from a C to a B+. #Masterychat The look on her face and sound of her voice: Pride

A7 Find you tribe! Surround yourself with positive people who help you remember why you love what you do on the days that you struggle. Some of my most influential tribe are the kids in my class!! #masterychat
A7 Hold tight to your reasons for doing what you do. If you're trying to change an activity, your whole plan, or the world, remember that you have an endless capacity for greatness. You can and will make it! #masterychat
A6)I would have to say internal. You can always count on yourself, not so much the outside world/employers/etc. There might not always be a carrot at the end of the stick.#MasteryChat#IHMarchMadness
Everyday we wake up and see a student who needs our guidance, positivity and love. Many times we don’t even know it’s them. That’s why it should be given to every student we meet. #MasteryChat
A8: My absolute favorite is a workout quote, but applies to everything too. “When you don’t feel like going is when you need to go the MOST!” Said it to myself tonight even though I reeeeeeeally didn’t want to go 😫💪🏼😊 #MasteryChat
A6 Intrinsic motivation everytime. When we rely on extrinsic Ss always expect to get “something”. We need to foster the concept that learning can be and is its own reward. Ss need to be able to push themselves to be their best for themselves #masterychat
Great chat tonight #mschat and #masterychat. So much awesomeness happening. If you want to keep it going head on over to #waledchat.
Happy Friday Everyone!!!
A8 This goes to all educators who once felt they weren't good enough (including myself) "it doesn't matter where you come from, what you've gone through. What matters is you're here to learn". #ownquote#MasteryChat
A6 Intrinsic motivation everytime. When we rely on extrinsic Ss always expect to get “something”. We need to foster the concept that learning can be and is its own reward. Ss need to be able to push themselves to be their best for themselves #masterychat
