A1: Using the internet to engage in responsible dialogue and not being a propagator of "fake news." #FCPSLearn
  • hapara_team Mar 20 @ 7:06 PM EDT
A1: digital citizenship means being prepared to participate respectfully and meaningfully in a largely digital world - saw someone say recently, digital citizenship is no longer separate, its just citizenship #fcpslearn
  • noel_hoffmann Mar 20 @ 7:06 PM EDT
    Hi Michael! #fcpslearn
    In reply to @_on11
  • _on11 Mar 20 @ 7:07 PM EDT
A1: Digital citizenship is the expectation that you would operate in the same manner if that person was standing next to you or if you were speaking face to face. Operating with integrity and self-control. #fcpslearn
  • theedpodcast Mar 20 @ 7:08 PM EDT
Shane joining late from AB, Canada. Teacher and education podcaster!#FCPSLearn

  • hapara_team Mar 20 @ 7:10 PM EDT
A2: Ideally, digital citizenship is built into every unit. Maybe there’s a stand alone unit at the beginning of the year to set specific expectations for your class #fcpslearn
  • MrPStrunk Mar 20 @ 7:11 PM EDT
A2: It is interwoven throughout my units through discussions on appropriate actions on the internet and determining if a source is reliable. I recently developed this graphic to help express this. Want to make it a poster for next year! #FCPSLearn
  • hapara_team Mar 20 @ 7:11 PM EDT
A2 (2): We actually wrote a blog post about this around Digital Citizenship Week: https://t.co/LNOxi4uMOz #fcpslearn
  • _on11 Mar 20 @ 7:11 PM EDT
Hey @LevineWrites, @MrsAsztalos...we need your help in #fcpslearn.
  • theedpodcast Mar 20 @ 7:11 PM EDT
A2: I taught digital citizenship separately this year, but I think going forward, I'll just integrate it into stuff as we go. #FCPSLearn
  • hapara_team Mar 20 @ 7:11 PM EDT
    lol this is great! #fcpslearn
    In reply to @MrPStrunk
  • noel_hoffmann Mar 20 @ 7:12 PM EDT
I hear angels singing in the background, and what is that bright light in the distance? Lo, it is Michael. #fcpslearn

  • _on11 Mar 20 @ 7:12 PM EDT
A2: Digital citizenship is blended into what we do daily, but a greater focus needs to be given to this area. #fcpslearn
  • MsJachymiak Mar 20 @ 7:13 PM EDT
A1: Digital citizenship is maintains your values online #fcpslearn
  • noel_hoffmann Mar 20 @ 7:13 PM EDT
A2: Every time we have an online project or activity, we talk about assessing websites and about treating each other with respect. #fcpslearn
  • _datagirl Mar 20 @ 7:13 PM EDT
Taught both explicitly and embedded into everything... #fcpslearn
    In reply to @_on11
  • MillerMathSMS Mar 20 @ 7:13 PM EDT
A2: Not a separate unit, but it's always a reminder when we are working on chromebooks! Such a need to reinforce this! In this tech savvy world, Ss need to know how to use the internet in the correct manner! #fcpslearn
  • MHSLewisHistory Mar 20 @ 7:15 PM EDT
  • MrPStrunk Mar 20 @ 7:16 PM EDT
A3: I think it probably depends on the lesson. Though I will definitely say a majority of the time I hope I am on the right side of this scale! #FCPSLearn
  • hapara_team Mar 20 @ 7:16 PM EDT
A3: As a company, not a classroom teacher, this one is hard to answer - but we like to point out that we have tools that support all stages while helping Ts move towards supporting independent learning #fcpslearn
  • _on11 Mar 20 @ 7:16 PM EDT
A3: Depending on the point in the quarter, we move between Structured and Independent Learning. When the quarter starts and the students are getting acclimated with our space, they need more guidance. By the end of the quarter, they are flying independently. #fcpslearn
  • ErinDHarding Mar 20 @ 7:17 PM EDT
I think this is key - you're never in one place all the time - the goal is to strive for the right side and support learners as they need it #fcpslearn
    In reply to @MrPStrunk
  • MHSLewisHistory Mar 20 @ 7:17 PM EDT
I couldn't agree more. We need to explicitly teach this like we do behavior and other content. #fcpslearn
    In reply to @rponcia
  • hapara_team Mar 20 @ 7:17 PM EDT

  • theedpodcast Mar 20 @ 7:18 PM EDT
A3: I'm definitely in the "semi-independent learning" category. Kids can be independent, but I'm always going to be there as a go-to expert/guide. #fcpslearn
  • MillerMathSMS Mar 20 @ 7:18 PM EDT
A3: Depends on the topic/lesson. Usually fall into structured/semi-independent learning. Towards the end of the teaching a concept, Ss are generally independent! #fcpslearn
  • _datagirl Mar 20 @ 7:18 PM EDT
This is a struggle as a coach too. So many Ts are learners on the left, which is a barrier to moving Ss in the continuum. But not insurmountable w willingness and tools! #fcpslearn
    In reply to @hapara_team
  • noel_hoffmann Mar 20 @ 7:18 PM EDT
A3: At different points in the school year, I am at each of the points on that continuum except lock down---unless there seems to be a need. #fcpslearn
  • TDeZordo Mar 20 @ 7:19 PM EDT
Our Ss are great people. They are becoming great citizens. Their identity is empathetic, caring, and loving DigCit put simply is: Reminding students of this identity when using the internet (not always easy when group think kicks in) #fcpslearn. Thoughts? @SraMcNeilly
  • MHSLewisHistory Mar 20 @ 7:20 PM EDT
  • noel_hoffmann Mar 20 @ 7:20 PM EDT
I like how you stated that, Travis. #fcpslearn
    In reply to @TDeZordo, @SraMcNeilly
  • hapara_team Mar 20 @ 7:20 PM EDT
Yes, sometimes the willingness is harder to come by than the tools! But having the right tools definitely helps #fcpslearn
    In reply to @_datagirl
  • _datagirl Mar 20 @ 7:20 PM EDT
@gcouros talked about digital footprints. Helping them create positive ones is essential! #fcpslearn

A4: A gradual release of responsibility is key - start learners off more locked down (and tell them why!). Then as they begin to understand expectations, shift the control towards them #fcpslearn
  • theedpodcast Mar 20 @ 7:21 PM EDT
A4: in the words of a famous philosopher... #fcpslearn
  • noel_hoffmann Mar 20 @ 7:21 PM EDT
True. Some kids need that structure while others don't. You have to know your kids. #fcpslearn
    In reply to @theedpodcast
  • rponcia Mar 20 @ 7:23 PM EDT
A1: #fcpslearn Digital Citizenship is how we treat each other, only online.
    In reply to @MHSLewisHistory
  • _on11 Mar 20 @ 7:23 PM EDT
A4: Small shifts to move from status quo to out of your comfort zone. Not everything has to be a giant leap. Somewhere, out there, @joykirr nods her head in approval. Hoping to receive a @Bitmoji with a thumbs up. #fcpslearn
  • MHSLewisHistory Mar 20 @ 7:25 PM EDT
  • hapara_team Mar 20 @ 7:25 PM EDT
I think small shifts, and realizing that it's ok to take a step back if you need to #fcpslearn

Scott has awesome questions every week! #fcpslearn I hope you'll consider joining your neighbors in Clarke as @ToddRisser and @misskoplin guest host #waledchat this Thursday at 9pm ET. It is going to be a blast!
  • hapara_team Mar 20 @ 7:27 PM EDT
A5: Peer to peer learning has a huge role! Being able to interact respectfully and share ideas is the ultimate goal, right? Again, it’s important to set expectations. Modeling both the right and wrong behavior can help too #fcpslearn
  • _on11 Mar 20 @ 7:27 PM EDT
A5: Trying to get kids to self-advocate in their projects is a complicated game. Being present in class, being able to read emotions and ask the "right" questions is essential. #fcpslearn
  • noel_hoffmann Mar 20 @ 7:27 PM EDT
A5: Sure! We have online discussions where students respond to each other's opinions. I gave sentence starters for them so that they have a model for how to respectfully reply. I go over expectations for how to respectfully disagree with each other. #fcpslearn
  • TDeZordo Mar 20 @ 7:27 PM EDT
A4: “What would you allow your students to do in class if you knew they could not fail?” #fcpslearn
  • Flood1Tracy Mar 20 @ 7:28 PM EDT
A1: A win-win! Using technology responsibly to benefit ourselves and others. #fcpslearn
  • noel_hoffmann Mar 20 @ 7:29 PM EDT
It was a fun chat, @MHSLewisHistory! Enjoyed it! #fcpslearn
