It was pretty fun to be John Lennon today. My Ss learned who @thebeatles were, and listened to their music, sung by Lennon himself (me). They studied lyrics from songs like Revolution and Nowhere Man and identified the POV of every song. #parkavetigers#tlap#KidsDeserveIt

Q1. How have you navigated the tension between raising student achievement and helping students be successful in all areas (tested and untested)? #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
Hello #TLAP, Michael from Minnesota. Just finished a book discussion on Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain by @Ready4rigor with the #joybookclub and now I’m ready for another round!
Pam here from MN where I teach 4th grade. My favorite holiday memory was when my son who was in the military told me he wouldn’t make it home for Xmas and surprised me by walking in the house....best day!! #ReclaimingOurCalling#TLAP
A1: Pay attention to data but focus on teaching and learning. Make sure we don't forget the SEL components and make our kids kind #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1. Our focus is on preparing kids for anything by providing authentic experiences that connect kids to the real world (relevance) and using standards embedded as part of PBL or Design Thinking (Rigor). #tlap
A1: My desire is for students to be ready for their futures. @ERobbPrincipal reminded me that test scores tell us where a student IS not where they CAN BE! My hope is that I keep learning centered around the heights my students can reach! #reclaimingourcalling#tlap
A1. One of the ways our team has helped students grow academically, and as whole learners, has been through the use of a mobile #MakerSpace fleet. This has helped us prioritize a pedagogy of content-creation. #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1. I guess in my future classroom I can see myself raising student achievement by setting goals for my students and providing incentives for my students .#tlap
Hi Brad! We make about 10-12 different kinds of cookies. I love the Reese’s cookies - peanut butter cookie with a Reese’s cup in the middle with a dot of frosting on top. So good. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1: As a principal, I try to always give Ts the space to be creative and teach in unique ways. I provide qualify PD and ensure they are supported in their work with Ss. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1: a way to #ReclaimingOurCalling is by using the 16 Habits of Mind and building it into what we do with learners. Push back on test scores and love the whole child! We have changed that focus with our #personalizedlearning environments #tlap
@AkkermanTrista There are many great Twitter education chats. #TLAP has great discussions on topics like this. It's right after #4thchat Great to see a student teacher use Twitter to create a PLN. Chats are great way to find great people to connect to as well.
A1: If you do what’s best for your students, and you prepare them for the type of test & material, and use some data-driven strategies, they’re bound to grow & do well... #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1 It is very difficult, but it is important to teach our kids to own their education and to have a growth mindset. We need to work together to be successful. I also work on helping our Ss reflect on their learning to make progress.#TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
Q1. How have you navigated the tension between raising student achievement and helping students be successful in all areas (tested and untested)? #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1: Learn that students create with your hands so much more, giving them ways to innovate and challenge them and tie it back into our learning goals. #TLAP
A1. Trying not to focus on the tests, while preparing students for anything that comes there way. Looking for opportunities to teach the strategies and also allow time for self exploration. Educating the community on the difference between the two. #tlap#reclaimingourcalling
A1. I am currently a Junior at APSU hoping to teach 8th grade science, but if i were in a classroom now I would make sure that the student has all the support they need no matter the circumstances. #tlap
A1: Focusing on great instruction and making lessons engaging and relevant, making school a place where kids want to be can help regardless of what test is in front of students. Be intentional, focused and REAL #reclaimingourcalling#tlap
Hey #tlap crew! I’m Greg, an elementary school principal from Northern California. We wrote a family letter to Santa and read his response on Christmas in our pajamas while eating persimmon muffins and breakfast casserole. And then we eat more food!
A1 All about finding the balance once you have those relationships with students. When connection does not exist, when students question school, they will never focus on learning. (High school) Define success with them knowing challenges lie ahead. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
Q1. How have you navigated the tension between raising student achievement and helping students be successful in all areas (tested and untested)? #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1 the tests are an event that happens but what we do everyday is far more important than a test ever will be and that is how we view it as a staff. #tlap
Q1. How have you navigated the tension between raising student achievement and helping students be successful in all areas (tested and untested)? #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1 - Here is my list:
1. High expectations for every kid
2. Empower kids w/o grades
3. Flexible assignments
4. Re-test and focus in mastery
5. Help kids understand the power of learning
6. Build relationships first. Content 2nd
7. Always remain an advocate
#teachpos#tlap
A2) Offer students choice, voice, and leadership opportunities. We're also working to integrate environmental education into the curriculum and get kids outside playing and learning. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
Q1. How have you navigated the tension between raising student achievement and helping students be successful in all areas (tested and untested)? #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1 Never forget to keep it Student Centered. I have gone back and forth between what is most important but if we keep the child as the focus and that relationship piece in the center then academic, SEL, and all components will balance. #tlap
Q1. How have you navigated the tension between raising student achievement and helping students be successful in all areas (tested and untested)? #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1: We need to care for the kids first. Establish that you are a safe space and that you believe in them. From there, the achievement will build. Once the kids trust you believe they can succeed, the sky is the limit! #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
#tlap A1a A while ago I worked at a FLETC. What made the difference was asking the learners for their perspective. Assessments only go so far. What’s it like in their shoes?
A1: Coach teachers and help them see the value in using data to get to know their Ss strengths and areas of growth and use it for guiding instruction--but work on relationships so Ss know we SEE them (not just the data). #reclaimingourcalling#TLAP
A1 When we create a positive environment that will allow the students and staff to take risks and know that it is OK to fail and try again we have the chance to see real learning! It is not easy work but crucial for any school. #ReclaimingOurCalling#TLAP@pbisMN
Q1. How have you navigated the tension between raising student achievement and helping students be successful in all areas (tested and untested)? #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1: Student conferencing. Together identify strengths and opportunities for improvement. Set goals. Time for student reflection on progress towards goals. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
Q1. How have you navigated the tension between raising student achievement and helping students be successful in all areas (tested and untested)? #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1: My focus is to help students be successful at SOMETHING. This usually enables them to build their confidence to be successful at more. Usually, increases in student achievement will follow. #ReclaimingOurCalling#tlap
A1: with the “there’s no crying in science class” oath the second day of school. And I allow ss to redo any assignment or make corrections to any test for full credit. It takes a while, but ss learn to use me as a resource and they relax a little. #TLAP
A1 I think this is a fine line. I think scaffolding experiences to help them level up their achievement. The most important thing is building confidence and resolve, focus on the learning, provide multiple opportunities and multiple avenues. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
Q1. How have you navigated the tension between raising student achievement and helping students be successful in all areas (tested and untested)? #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1: I think they go hand in hand! If we are giving students opportunities to problem solve, br creative, think critically, collaborate, & be good humans, then we are certainly going to raise student achievement. We can’t only focus on what is tested. Then we fail our Ss. #TLAP
Q1. How have you navigated the tension between raising student achievement and helping students be successful in all areas (tested and untested)? #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1- For me it all comes back to what skills we want our Ss to come away with. If I can help Ss build skills they can use in a variety of settings and areas then you can avoid at least a few of a rocky areas #tlap
Q1. How have you navigated the tension between raising student achievement and helping students be successful in all areas (tested and untested)? #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
#tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1. I would like for my students to be able to look themselves in the mirror each night and honestly answer the question did I live my life proactively with integrity and help create value for others
Hi #TLAP! Love our tradition of watching The Grinch while we add lights to they tree (no fun) and then put on Elf for the fun of decorating the tree. #ReclaimingOurCalling 🌲
A1: A big focus has been to align everything we are doing. We are focused on infusing everything w/ S voice (instruction and environment) & to make sure our academic task is at high levels and aligned w/ assessments. Focus I. Learning, not testing! #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1: I think when you plan with the standards in mind, but keep the kids' needs as the forefront for learning, you can't go wrong. Make it fun. Make it interesting, and make it student centered #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1: #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling got to look at the whole child first always. There are too many other factors that weigh in other than raising scores. Ss will achieve if we meet all of their infilled needs
Q1. How have you navigated the tension between raising student achievement and helping students be successful in all areas (tested and untested)? #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1: I want my Ss to be ready for the future. The scores on my Ss benchmarks show where my Ss are, but not where they can be. I want to keep pushing them and helping them to continue to grow as a learner. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1
Personalized learning experiences and reflection are priorities in helping students reach their potential
Focusing on creation using PBL and 20% time projects help students incorporate many areas of learning
#ReclaimingOurCalling#tlap
Chris from Indiana here! Favorite tradition is adding one new feature to outside decorations each year!
A1. Navigate tension? My goal is to cut or relieve the tension as student achievement and success should work in harmony with one another!
#tlap
a1) I have tried to balance the need to make students feel confident and yet not make learning so "easy" that students don't have to work at it. "Easy learning" doesn't stick well. #tlap
A1: I use data and standards to guide lessons but infuse them with creativity. I try to include their ideas as well. I ask myself if I'd want to be a student in my class. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1: help Ss discover their strengths and find ways to utilize those strengths. Build in time to have conversations and provide meaningful feedback. #Tlap
A1- 1st make kids feel loved and appreciated as it will help in all areas... tested and not tested. Rita Pierson stated it best “Kids don’t learn from people they don’t like!” #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
#tlap A1b I read somewhere where @jcorippo asked why learning & development of adults begins with a phenomenon, some artifact demo’ing an aspect of what one could do with the learning. Why doesn’t that happen so much in K-12?
A1 I think keeping it REAL and staying flexible is KEY! When kids know we care about them as humans first, they perform.
As an "at risk" kiddo...THAT "REALness" from my teachers is what drove me to excel as a little girl. #tlap
A1 Making time for conversations, working on relationships & doing the best that I can to create engaging and fun lessons, while also model risk taking, failing and pushing through, #tlap
A1: I strive to make all lessons engaging and standards driven. I believe if Ss can relate to the content and are excited to learn then there will be an increase in student achievement! #tlap
A1: I love this question because it reminds us to "Innovate Inside the Box". Simply knowing your students and taking opportunities to build on their strengths and passions can still ensure we "do our job" while developing the whole learner. #tlap
Q1. How have you navigated the tension between raising student achievement and helping students be successful in all areas (tested and untested)? #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1:Let go of pressure. Ss come to us in one age range & thousands of different ability levels. S achievement is never =. As long as Ss are met w/ high standards no matter their ability level they will achieve & make gains big & small w/ proper support & strong instruction. #TLAP
A1: I think we find balance when we remember to be data-informed, but student-driven. I need data to make the best educational decisions for my students. But it’s our students and their success that drives me. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
Agree! Data helps us identify which aspects of teaching are having the desired impact. Spend less time planning what we will do and more time determining whether what we are doing is having the desired impact on learning. #ChaseImpact#tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1. We need to make sure we are focusing on the entire child during the learning process! Making sure it is student centered, building relationships, believing in them, caring, encouragement! #tlap
A1: we must start with relationships and trust with our learners. In our #personalizedlearning with a no grade level focus our learners stay in their cohort their entire elementary career. #tlap
A1 I’m ready for the changes which have to be made, students are ready for a change (but nervous about it, naturally), but I’m not entirely sure the system as a whole is ready. Parents? Many. System... #tlap
A2. Important to find ways for each student to find success both in classroom (by empowering them and giving choice) and in afterschool activities. Also true for staff by giving opportunities to lead and learn from others. #tlap
A2: #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling knowing names. Buddy classes. Mixed assemblies. Community events. Lots of award and motivation to be awesome and succeed.
A2: At @JWMSGoCougars we are all about sharing our story. We post all over social media about the things we do. I know that I try to use Twitter and the school's FB to share out what we are doing in class so Ss can be seen! Just did it today! #ReclaimingOurCalling#tlap
Very cool. Got a favorite family song...or should we all just assume it’s K-Ci & JoJo “All My Life” (because they absolutely rock)?! #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A2. We strive to have our students feel "seen" in all we do. One example is how our team runs a Cafeteria DJ program during lunch where students can select the songs they love. It's pretty special to see (and hear)! #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A2- I greet each kid in hallway before they can enter my room and I just started asking questions today to spark further conversation! Know names and faces! #tlap
A2: I see my main role as asking thought-provoking questions and then allowing students the opportunity to share and to benefit from the creativity and originality of each other's ideas.
#TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1 Ensuring that at the centre of all school improvements asking questions-what do we value?what do we believe?what is best for the students in this context?what do we need to improve in our pedagogy? what do we need to know? -building capacity Ts & Ss #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
Q1. How have you navigated the tension between raising student achievement and helping students be successful in all areas (tested and untested)? #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
WOW! Marci, you have this all dialed in. ".... determining whether what we are doing is having the desired impact on learning." Students are so fortunate to have you! #tlap
Agree! Data helps us identify which aspects of teaching are having the desired impact. Spend less time planning what we will do and more time determining whether what we are doing is having the desired impact on learning. #ChaseImpact#tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A2 I try to learn as much about them as possible. I try to give them a voice. I want them to know I care. From words, to small actions, to conversations. I give my time to kids/colleagues. They know I am not perfect. But I care. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
#tlap A1c In high school I learned about the Battle of Hastings, it happened in 1066. It would have been nice to learn why that was important to me in ’69. Ss at FLETC said same. So that’s what I do.. show ‘em what it means to them now so they can enable their future selves.
A1 Since I teach Pre-K they aren’t under the same testing, but still feel the need to help them be engage/successful students AND caring, thoughtful humans. It’s a daily challenge that I try to address with engagement, positivity, and relationship. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A2: Listen to them. Don’t get on them for silly things. #givethemadarnpencil provide experiences to practice making mistakes. Don’t cry over spilled milk. Instead of getting angry for unfulfilled expectations (like make sure your area is clean) teach them how to do it. #TLAP
A2 I greet them at the door, move around and interact with each student, and welcome all Ss as they pass in the hall, get them to dance to my crazy between class music jams ;) #tlap
A1: I think a key for my students is having a lot of conversations about how their social and emotional learning is just as important as academic learning. Ss need to feel like they have a relationship before they will give their best. #tlap#reclaimingourcalling
A2 I have gamified and each class is its own “faction” and my students four years ago dubbed my classes “The School of Awesome” so there is feeling of belonging to something unique/special. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A2: We are working hard to recognize and celebrate each other as staff members, as well find unique ways to make sure each Ss is cherished and valued. We spotlight Ss in many different ways, but first we love each and every Ss! #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
Yep! Relationships are the on-ramp to impact. Leverage our relationships to guide students in reaching full potential. High expectations. High support. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A2: I make sure that I hear from every Ss every day by amplifying and promoting student voice and choice. Using tools like @Flipgrid allows me to easily hear from my Ss andunderstand what they are thinking and learning. #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling#FlipgridFever
A2: students, staff and families have a voice. Their stories are known and and they know we care through our actions and words. #ReclaimingOurCalling#tlap
A2 - List #2
1. I hope every student feels special
2. I hope every student knows I care
3. I hope every student believes in who they are
4. I will make sure each student challenges the status quo
5. I will work with other colleagues to remove barriers of doubt
#teachpos#tlap
A2: Voice! We are doing a project to incorporate more student voice in videos, get videos of students sent out of class to work with ILT, talk to parents about what they want and expect. I need to talk to kids about their experience in our school EVERY SINGLE DAY! #TLAP
I would make sure my students feel like they have a voice in class. I could also respect them for other things than their intellectual abilities, like their hobbies or interests. #tlap
A2. Since I am not in a classroom setting yet, i am going to say what I will do, I will build relationships with all my students individually, and get to know what they enjoy outside of the classroom. #tlap
A2 I will sit with them, ask about classes, weekends, interests, anything to continue to build relationships, we share funny class stories, have become learning families :) #tlap
A2 My ss always know that I have high expectations for them that I respect them and that I expect them to be respectful to me in return I appreciate what they know I give them a chance to share I let them create their space I listen & I genuinely care
#ReclaimingOurCalling#tlap
A2: I hope we are building a school where students and staff are known for their strengths and valued for theor contributions. We can ensure that people are seen when we take the time to notice and appreciate them. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A2- I try and make sure that I build relationships at the door...greeting all students before they come into my room so that I have seen everyone even before we get into our daily work #tlap
Having high expectations for students and meeting them where they are. I love for students to set realistic goals for themselves. Much more powerful when they take ownership. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A2 Our House system has truly changed the culture of our school. It has given everyone, Ss and Ts, a family and a place. With it we celebrate constantly and we celebrate one another, it has Been great to see. #tlap
A2 I love getting to know all of the Ss, smiles, quick hellos, anything, we need those interactions a lot, all Ss need to feel welcomed into our classrooms and schools #tlap
A2) Since I am currently still a student, in the future one way that I would make sure all people feel seen is giving each and every child a voice. Raising hands is nice, but I want every student to have an opportunity to speak, by calling each student directly by name. #tlap
That is awesome, Greg. I think we need to create a culture where students know they are valued in the community and would be missed if they were not there. Thank you for sharing! #tlap
Some of the smallest genuine gestures can have the biggest impact. A surefire way to see kids is to literally see them as they walk in the building (or classroom), right?! #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A2: As an online teacher, I often get the students who are quieter and need to know that someone is on their side often. I allow my students to communicate with me however they like- whether it be with a microphone, email, video call or chat. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A2 I try to treat the students, bus drivers, staff and community like they are family! Celebrate the small wins during the day and when we are struggling we all need someone in our corner! We are the Wildcats! #ReclaimingOurCalling#TLAP
A2: Open door policy! Transparency in all settings in key in creating a trusting & "seen" environment. Be open to being observed - great ideas are spread this way! #TLAP
A2: Our Gold Coin assemblies every Monday morning where we recognize students from the previous week that we caught being great. In class I make it a point to acknowledge student success-big and small. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A2: We are all in it together! We KNOW our Ss as individuals & learners. Kids are part of a House & lift each other up. Our staff is a family! We support each other & trust each other. We are wirkkkg together, sharing ideas, & the Ts & staff are leaders! #TLAP
My favorite time of the day....high fives and a smile for all who walk past my door in the morning! Appreciate passions of all ss and make sure they know it #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A2: As a principal I made it a point to know everyone’s name & story so there was a connection & people knew they were valued! Healthy relationships built on trust & respect were at the core of our work & helped create a shared identity that we all valued & appreciated! #TLAP
A2: Hellos and high fives to every kid every day, personalized learning, voice and choice. Giving students voice in decision making, committees, clubs
#TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
#tlap A2a Clinician PD can be a challenge. To participate in an event they have to clear their schedule months in advance so they don’t negatively impact their clinic. Designing a meaningful learning experience starts with knowing the learners constraints, needs.
A2: Starting on day 1, I work on building relationships & getting to know each individual S (their strengths/weaknesses, likes, interests, etc). I give Ss an opportunity to share their voice & take ownership of their learning!! I let them know that they matter! #TLAP
A2: Through building relationships by including everyone, acknowledging them, listening to them, celebrating them, being kind to them, empathizing, encouraging, supporting, and loving them. #ReclaimingOurCalling#tlap
Having high expectations for students and meeting them where they are. I love for students to set realistic goals for themselves. Much more powerful when they take ownership. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A2: moving beyond the “world culture day” phenomenon and making a concerted effort to bridge home and school cultures through teaching and relationships. Meets kids where they’re at and shows they’re valued and understood #ReclaimingOurCalling#TLAP
A2: We put Ss work up everywhere. It's in our office, display case, bulletin boards, walls. Showing Ss we value what they do helps them be seen. #TLAP#reclaimingourcalling
A2 I’ve made many steps to make our room OUR room. It doesn’t conform and neither do our assignments. We typically go from individual, to small group, to class, giving me time to sit with students. Creativity & student input is an expectation. #tlap#unlimitedteacher
Thanks, Tiara. I’m also curious how you have felt “seen” in your classes? How have others amplified your voice in the manner you aspire to for your kiddos? #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A2: we also have #openclassrooms this year & teachers are observing each other. That takes a lot of trust & transparency. Proud of my teachers for wanting to be “seen”! #TLAP
#ReclaimingOurCalling#tlap A2our semester-long projects are based upon student choice. They try to solve problems that they or others have experienced. We tie their business plans to DECA competition and regular class presentations. It is an iterative process not a one-and-done.
Hey #tlap crew, one of my favorite 5th grade teachers is chatting with us tonight. She is venturing into new territory and wanting to grow her PLN! @MrsSutton5th is one to follow!
A2. Using lunch as a time to sit and meet with different groups of students. I bring groups of students together and eat lunch with them, talk ing about what they would like to see different at school and how we can make it happen together.#TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A2: Intentionality! We are working hard as a staff to be more intentional in getting to know all students and each other. Team leaders did a life mapping activity. We have Data Cards for every student that has their info and picture. #ReclaimingOurCalling#tlap
A2: Simple but calling students by their names, greeting them every morning, acknowledging when they are trying their best, celebrating them every chance I have! #tlap
People feel seen when they feel a sense of ownership over the experience! Ownership comes from a shared vision, voice in the future trajectory & a sense of pride! #TLAP
A2: This is going to be a boring answer but I wholeheartedly believe in the power of protocols to build highly effective collaborative teams. Protocols help us structure conversations so everyone has a voice and knows that their contributions matter. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A2- This year we are literally allowing every student to be seen as we have removed bulletin boards and converted any empty hall/wall space with student pictures and art work. #ReclaimingOurCalling#tlap
A2 Our class has pictures of students all over. Things they say or create displayed around room. They have jobs to contribute. Always acknowledge helpfulness. Basically try to make them feel valued. Even when the behavior is challenging. 😆 #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A2: Knowing the Ss and staff as individuals, providing many opportunities for student choice and voice and promiting respect for all #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A2. We care about our Ss, welcoming them in each day, giving hugs, listening to their stories, all students have jobs in the school for leadership, they can write positive shoutouts on the wall, etc. #tlap
A2: I always greeted every student at the door in the morning with a fist bump or verbal greeting. At the end of the day, I said goodbye to every student with a fist bump or words. #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
#tlap A2b The webcasts & webinars I produce and manage are accredited. Accrediting bodies require interactivity. So designing in some way for learners to make their learning visible is major. Best when it’s done with their peers.
gcouros: Greg_Moffitt That is awesome, Greg. I think we need to create a culture where students know they are valued in the community and would be missed if they were not there. Thank you for sharing! #tlap
I just follow amazing educators, read their tweets, purchase their books and continue my passion for learning from others. I appreciate your compliment. Thank you! #tlap
A2: I make sure that Ss know that they are valued for something they bring to the table. I try to honor kids in a variety of ways for many reasons. We regularly have conversations about a variety of people, social classes, and various cultures. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A2: Daily class meetings have developed great community in our classroom. It is a safe place where all students have a voice. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
When we think about learning, it should always be grounded in instruction and methods that our students first. This process starts and ends with being advocated and modeling for kids. A lesson is just that. A learning experiment goes far beyond just an objective. #teachpos#tlap
A2 Might sound so simple, but call people by NAME!
Also,I love using the REAL + #InnovatorsCompass to learn more about those I serve. https://t.co/lBO36i7AEU
When I walk in the classrooms, I can ask about, their dreams, current reality, what makes you feel you💪🏼the day! #tlap
A3. I would love a #BeTheOne For Kids tattoo. Every educator has the power to change the life of a child and all we need to do is realize/unleash it. #reclaimingourcalling#tlap
A2: I have spent a great deal of time looking at my classrooms through the intercultural lenses of my students & fellow staff. Safety comes with acceptance of race, religion, & learning styles & celebration of strengths. It’s our school family! #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
“We are learners first & educators second!” Our work is to keep learning at the center of our work each day; learning can be unsettling, destabilizing & uncomfortable but in the end, it’s the only way we can improve & enhance our craft! #TLAP
Q2. Staff are visible and interacting with all kids during passing times. Many connections being made between grade levels. We talk a lot about providing a sense of belonging for our students. Our staff care about our kids. #TLap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A2 #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling I work hard on my students setting goals. We also spend a couple of days on a project management lesson. They then turn their goals into action items and a timeline on when they expect to achieve certain milestones. Voice and choice is huge.
A3: #atleast - it’s one of my quotes for my life, too. Even if it’s as simple as, “at least you put your name on your paper.” “At least you brought your materials.” There’s always 100,000,00 at leasts we could say that could negate anything negative. #TLAP
A2: I think we do a better job of recognizing students in all areas when they do something positive. We also do some students of the week along with positive paws as part of our discipline program.
#TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
Sure thing. I wrote a blog post about it a year or two ago with most of the basics if you’re interested. Feel free to DM me and I’d be happy to talk through how to get something similar started. #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
I was very timid when I was in school, but my teachers knew I was a good and achieving student. So, they would call on me personally to answer questions and voice my opinion, so I would have to. Because of this I began to feel more comfortable speaking in the classroom. #tlap
A3 Hmmm🤔 “Focus on the Learning, Not the grade” but the only tattoo I’d ever really get is my life mantra “Every day you wake up is a good day” #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A1 #TLAP It's important to balance priorities and we focus on Core Values lessons and recognizing positive behaviors, improvement across multiple areas, and achieving excellence. Celebrating small successes leads to academic success and student confidence.
We had a huge banner with your quote in our school for several years, Tika. (Now our banner says, “What will you create today?”) #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A3: “Whatever it takes” - in reference to..No student will fail because I will do whatever it takes to help them be successful and realize their limitless potential! #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A3: “learning is fun.” Because I personally love learning, and I think as a teacher my job is to show kids the joy that comes with learning... that it isn’t a chore but an adventure to new discoveries. #TLAP
Something powerful was changing our language. We call students = learners now. We call classrooms= learning studios this helped give learners a voice and show them school is about them. #tlap
#tlap A3b Tis’ the [shopping] season I’m sensitive to a store’s return policy.. see https://t.co/CDnTyq0a7g for reference.
With the learners I support I encourage relationship building after the event. What’s it like for you later? What are you doing with the learning?
Stepping in Late. Kim Wilson Bellview ELEM Kinder teacher. Favorite tradition is to have our children sit next to the tree and pass out gifts to the other one. Now we are doing that with grand kids. #TLAP#ReclamingOurCalling
A3. Another from Mr. Couros @gcouros
In education, our learning not only impacts our own growth, but the growth of others that we serve.
Extremely hard to urge with a strong statement such as this.
#tlap
Thank you @burgessdave for speaking to us tonight about your book, Teach Like A Pirate. Very very interesting and entertaining, lol. I am looking forward to finish reading the book and implementing your strategies.
#TLAP@meredithedtech
A3- @brewerhm has a powerful quote that I definitely believe in....”You show me a kid that can’t learn, I’ve just met a teacher that gave up on ’em!” #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
Amazing chat that should be grounded in all of education. It’s way too easy to continue on the path of least resistance. Let’s always remember the power we have to make a difference. #tlap
A3: Wow! This is a tough one to narrow down. Relationships. Every. Single. Child. Remember they are souls we are entrusted with. I think I could have an arm sleeve. #ReclaimingOurCalling#tlap
A3 EEEEK...we get to have a tattoo tonight! I'm flexing!
My tattoo would be this... image right here with "Be REAL" in the middle. Simple yet perfect for ME! #tlap
*Reference:
REAL = Relatable, Expose Vulnerability, Approachable, Learning Through Life)
A4: The moral foundation of education is providing every child access to learning regardless of readiness levels or ability; we accept, support & nurture every learner & that’s not a choice, it’s a calling! #TLAP
If I were to design a tattoo quote sharing my beliefs about learning it would say "If you believe, you can achieve. Even if the world is against you." This quote is for all the kids who were told they were not good or smart enough. #tlap
This right here has completely changed the my mindset this past year!! Professional Development is NOT an event, it is an attitude and it's an attitude that is life altering!! #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A few other things can help with language chnages. Ask learners if they are doing what is best for their learning. Ask them how they strived for accuracy on this project/assignment How did they persist when learning got tough. #tlap
A4. The moral foundation of education must include teaching the whole learner. This doesn't mean we disregard academic achievement; it just means we refuse to disregard everything else important. #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A4: Everyday we have an opportunity to shape the future. We can make it a place of hope and optimism or of negativity and destruction. We have the burden of making the choice everyday. #reclaimingourcalling#tlap
A4. "You can never go wrong by doing the right thing" - Mark Twain. In education we serve our students and work together to develop people who will create our future. #tlap
One of my favorite quotes "I'm not telling you it is going to be easy, I'm telling you it's going to be worth it." I think it applies to many things, not just education. #reclaimingourcalling#TLAP
A3: My educational tattoo comes from the book “The Jester Has Lost His Jingle”... “It’s up to us to make a difference, it’s up to us to care.” #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A4: Nobody has more passion for kids than educators. Educators are in this profession to help every Ss grow and flourish. We do not take our roles lightly, but instead let our passion fuel us. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A4. With much patience!
Develop a relationship built on trust, understanding and mutual belief that the students should always be the center of our profession!
#ReclaimingOurCalling#tlap
A3) If I were to design a tattoo quote sharing my beliefs about learning it would say "If you believe, you can achieve. Even if the world is against you." This quote is for all the kids who were told they were not good or smart enough. #tlap
A4 Moral Foundation is that every student deserves to learn at high achievement levels. This is possible within the right system. It is up tk educators to make sure we are living our mission and giving access to learning & success for all. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A4: Now this is a hard hitting question! It shouldn’t be a gamble. Every child in every classroom in every school deserves a highly effective teacher. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A3: I may choose this quote from Seth Godin for a tattoo since the message changed my life. You don't have to be chosen. You don't have to wait to be "called on." Pick yourself. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A4 The moral foundation of education is the believe that we are all deserving of a free public education because knowledge is the foundation of democracy and with in knowledge we have the strength as a people to make our lives as prosperous as possible #tlap
gcouros: RT LynMarsilio: One of my favorite quotes "I'm not telling you it is going to be easy, I'm telling you it's going to be worth it." I think it applies to many things, not just education. #reclaimingourcalling#TLAP
A4 I believe those in education have a calling. We don’t choose who we teach. We teach everyone who walks through our door. We inspire, motivate, and cultivate. We need need to remember our “why.” #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A4: That teachers teach more than just the academics. We teach the WHOLE child-every aspect of their development into the impactful human they are destined to be. #ReclaimingOurCalling#tlap
A4 Not sure about this one. I do think educators have a moral obligation to meet the needs of each learner. As @NowakRo posted, not all learners learn the same way or at same rate. #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A3 Not kidding, I almost got a #tlap pirate tattoo. I designed it and everything. The pirate acronym is really meaningful to me. :) #tlap
I think taking risks in my teaching has been the most powerful message.
A4. The moral foundation of education must include teaching the whole learner. This doesn't mean we disregard academic achievement; it just means we refuse to disregard everything else important. #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
This is powerful, Tony. Can you share more about what providing access means in terms of your tweet? I’m just wondering if access is enough...does it ensure learning? #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A4: Our purpose is to leave this world better than we found it. We do this by creating empathetic, kind, curious, innovative risk takers who grow to hold these values sacred. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A4: We are here for students. We are here to serve. Yes, serve kids! It is our duty to give 100% each day for kids & for their future. We owe it to them! #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling#kidsdeserveit
A4: It is our job as educators to teach the whole child. I tell those outside of education that it is my calling to impact children & to do that I must remember that they’re a soul entrusted to me. #ReclaimingOurCalling#tlap
A4
Education is not a business
It is a mindset that becomes second nature
It's a deep and lasting commitment and responsibility
And once you step through the Looking-Glass there is no turning back
#ReclaimingOurCalling#tlap
Q4 #tlap. #ReclaimingOurCalling There may be a couple of answers to this depending upon what you mean by Foundation. Are we talking about the current morals, or are we talking about the origins of Education?
Hey #tlap we have a learner competing for a name the robot contest. Could you quickly help this learner out and vote for “TRAX” I want to show the power in a #PLN and blow the voting out of the water!
Help us pick a name for the new bomb squad robot! The bomb squad picked from over 2,500 submissions from students in the Sioux Falls area. Now you can help pick the winner.
A4: As educators, we have a moral obligation to reach all kids. All of them. We have an obligation to inspire them. And to love them. And to give them the confidence and competence to succeed at whatever comes their way. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A4: Ask the question "Who have you learned the most from?" No matter what the answer a teacher will be mentioned (even if the teacher is them self). Education is learning, and learning is wealth nobody can take from you. #tlap
A4: Every day Ts have the chance to shape the future. We are so passionate about our students and their education that we give so much of ourselves to make sure our students get the education they deserve. #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A4 Education is about loving children and helping them become better than the generation before them. We teach academics along with people skills. Education today is about trial and error, inquiry, love, and voice. We support the whole child! #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
#tlap this answr changed for me once I Was a father, the child in front of you is someone else’s entire world- there is a person out there that would move mountains for the child in front of you and if there isn’t that person-you are their voice and advocate
A4- Our teachers love our kids and do as much as we can fit kids! People outside of schools will never understand what we do or why we do! Good thing is- we don’t care! We keep loving on kids and changing lives!! #TLAP
A1: As a K teacher the testing is more than in previous years and there are high expectations for all. How I navigate it is to use ELA & SS to teach about life skills. Having a class com that takes out competition and adds support helps too. #TLAP#Reclamingourcalling
Q1. How have you navigated the tension between raising student achievement and helping students be successful in all areas (tested and untested)? #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A4 I don’t know if I could truly explain it... it’s a calling (only reason we put up with some of the stuff we do) to create a better future. To hope you reach all but even a few along the way can change the future forever. To know every moment you make a difference #tlap
A4- Teachers have the opportunity to plant the seeds of learning that will help to grow better people and create a lush forest of a good society (too artsy?) #tlap
A4: To the layperson...In education we must build relationships with kids first. Hard to teach standards to a kid who had to save mom from overdosing the night before. That is what education is...relationships first. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A4: The moral foundation is the opportunity of education to create a better world and to overcome ignorance, and eliminate bigotry, hate and racism. #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A4: We do work that contributes to the long term flourishing of not just students but whole societies. That's why there is a nobility to education. It's vital part of democracy. #tlap#reclaimingourcalling
A4a I firmly believe we need to remember we should teach every Ss like we would teach our own children. We need to ask ourselves, “Would we want our children in this class?”#TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A4: Education should encourage students to be innovative & creative thinkers in order to be agents of change in their own community, city, and country. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A4. Every child deserves to learn at a high achievement levels with a passionate teacher to guide them through the learning process! We must mold our Ss to prepare themselves for jobs and a future that has been created! #tlap
Access, to me, means we will make sure that every student has an entry ramp to learning & whether that comes in the form of resources, instructional approaches or a belief system, it is our calling to ensure that gets actualizad; barrier removal, if you will. #TLAP
#tlap A4a I wouldn’t.
I think we’re all educators. The moral foundation of education knows no bounds.
Better to start a dialogue with the goal of learning how another practices education in their discipline.
A4 We say “we want to give our children better than we ourselves had.” Than we ourselves knew. Than we ourselves tried. Than we ourselves did. Than we ourselves thought. Dreamed. Hoped. Than we ourselves were taught. It takes a village? We are instrumental in its success. #TLAP
A4) everyone has the ability to learn. It will look different for them all, but that is what is powerful about learning. It is about each learner and finding their voice. #tlap
A4:Giving time and energy to young people to improve their future and the future of those they will influence. A future which you may never see but still work towards. To leave those you directly and indirectly have in your reach in better shape than you recieved it. #tlap
A5. @ramonadixon20 invested her time, patience, talents and gift of being an amazing critical friend during the years I most needed one. Rarely a day goes by when I don't think of her. #tlap
A5. I dedicated the book to three life-changing teachers who taught me the things that matter most when it comes to working with kids. I'm SUPER excited because they don't even know about the dedication yet! (Sending books their way soon!) #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A5 This question is the easiest one I’ve ever answered in an edchat. My wife has been my support, my rock my encourager. She has sacrificed so I can be the best educator, coach and administrator I can be. #tlap
#tlap#tlap this answr changed for me once I Was a father, the child in front of you is someone else’s entire world-there is a person out there that would move mountains for the child in front of you& if there isn’t A person, you become that person/advocate
A4: my moral foundation in education is to teach every child as if that child were my own- encouraging literacy, nurturing talent, & all started on a foundation of humility and humanity #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A5 Outside my parents... my HS Guidance Counselor (Ms. Crouch) and my basketball coach (Nick LaPre) believed in me and my abilities. Fostered so much growth. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A4: Not one quick answer, but #AllKidsAreOurKids so we need to do whatever it takes to help the learn and grow each and every day. Start by building relationships and go from there #reclaimingourcalling#tlap
A4: We are called to prepare our children for successful and happy futures as workers, citizens, and neighbors. This calling is our passion, our joy, our hope, and the reason we sacrifice so much. #ReclaimingOurCalling#tlap
A5: I have been fortunate to have a family that has been supportive of my professional goals. I have also been fortunate to have worked with some amazing admins & colleagues who have encouraged me to keep growing & learning #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A4 It is the right of all children to be educated & in that our core work is ensuring our classrooms & schools are equitable for all #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
I think I want my original answer back because I’m stealing yours. :) My wife is a constant source of support and inspiration. Selfless, committed, and mission-driven. #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A5: Many, many people. Forever grateful for those who saw more potential in me than I saw in myself. They stretched my vision to extend beyond the classroom and set me on a leadership journey that continues to this day! #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A5 I can’t point to one person and I think that is why I hope to support and move others forward. I want to invest in others so they see their potential, make their impact, and return the favor. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A5- I had an amazing professor that I worked with as a TA and she helped me through my Masters Thesis. I get excited to teach Kansas History every year so that I can hopefully do that same for others #tlap
A5: I have had a couple of administrators who have pushed me to do more or try more or just encouraged me doing what I was doing.
#TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
#tlap A5a Have you read Hemingway’s "Hemingway's Adventures of a Young Man?” I’m on my 5th career. There hasn’t been one person, but several. Mrs Beeson was probably the first in 10th grade journalism at Colton High +
A5) The person that invested in me was my 5th grade teacher, Ms. Taylor. I always loved children, but Ms. Taylor was the first African American teacher I had. When she taught, I saw myself in her and she pushed me. She inspired me to start my journey to become a teacher. #tlap
A2: In my class all Ss get noticed. I only have a wall where we work as a team on goals. So the low SS are not always on the bottom, but part of a team. We use iReady & with that all Ss have a chance to get 100% so we celebrate that individ. #TLAP#Reclaminingourcalling
#ReclaimingOurCalling#tlap A4
The world should be a better place because our students dwelt upon it. It is our responsibility to empower our Learners with the tools, skills and knowledge necessary to move the world in a positive direction and be the change that they would like.
A4 Not to be be morbid here, but we had our local PD come talk to us about active shooter training today, because we, as educators, are so much more. We are protectors of our kids. They are the future, they are family. #tlap
#tlap Mr. Fili my high school English Lit. Teacher. CBA- Lincroft NJ. He kept me after class and assigned me reading material that he knew would make me intrinsically motivated to learn. The 1st was “4 Arguments for the Elimination of TV.”
A5: many people along the way... my mom, my youth pastors growing up, my last principal, my close friends, just to name a few. Without them, I would have given up a long time ago and joined the circus. #tlap
A5: Almost everything I learned about teaching and leadership I learned from @JimSLTP. He’s the one that showed me how me to put students first, to love them unconditionally, and empower them to change the world. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A5- Easily my parents! Becoming Foster Parents for 20+ years before adopting 6 sealed my fate at age of 8. I remember crying at age 10 when 1st two sisters went home. I knew they were going back to a terrible situation! A 10 year old shouldn’t know more than a judge! #TLAP
A5: Many, many people. Forever grateful for those who saw more potential in me than I saw in myself. They stretched my vision to extend beyond the classroom and set me on a leadership journey that continues to this day! #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A5: All of my admins. Instead of stifling my noise, my enthusiasm, my messes, and my crazy ideas, they give me the space and resources to make it happen. And they listen to me about everything. They give me the space to grow, make mistakes, be human (or a t-Rex!!!) 😂😂 #tlap
A5 My amazing wife! @MrChrisPlummer also influenced me to continue furthering my education and helped me through my first few years as a teacher. Thank you for your leadership and great example #tlap
A5: Almost everything I learned about teaching and leadership I learned from @JimSLTP. He’s the one that showed me how me to put students first, to love them unconditionally, and empower them to change the world. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A5: If I never believed in myself this calling would never have been seen or heard clearly. Others have invested love, faith, time, & $$$$ for eduction but I made it a priority to never squander the opportunity. #tlap
#tlap A5b A Navy chief by the name of Langdon helped. There have been many. The latest one was @christycate who encouraged me to do something with what I was learning through #EdCamps. She did this by asking why I go to so many. Til that time I didn’t know.
A5: My cooperating teacher many years ago was the first. My current supervisor. And many more who encourage me to keep the faith, do good work, and push me to improve. #reclaimingourcalling#TLAP
A5 I'm going to have to say...many, but one that stands out the most is my grad-school professor (who didn't know she would become my life-coach)😉-> Dr. Devin!
I run everything past her before making big shifts in this profession & she is my multiplier! She believes in ME! #tlap
A5: There are certainly teachers past & colleagues present, and I used my head, followed my heart, and went for it in my mid 20s after giving advertising a try... #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
Isn’t this the truth, Marci. How might we see more potential in those we serve than they see in themselves (to pay it forward)? #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A5 A principal I worked with as an SLP. The Ts I did inclusion with. Every S who has crossed my path. Especially one that I mentored from 5th until 9th when he tragically passed away. He helped me see the impact I can have if I invest love & time. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A5: I never would have gone into education if it weren’t for a HS teacher of mine, Mr. Youngberg. Also, my first principal Carla and a great mentor of mine @chytjan56! They all inspire me to this calling! #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A5: When it was time to take a leap of faith and go after my entrepreneurial dreams on a full-time basis...my wife and business partner, @burgess_shelley, was FULLY on board. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
Every kid’s lane on the highway may look different so once they are on the highway, we have to give them space to self “drive & direct” the car; it’s about learners developing competencies & skills that transferable; not just about memorizing facts or passing a test! #TLAP
Good call, Jay. Coaches often play an understated role (meaning they are true life-changers but don’t always get mentioned right away in these chats). #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
#ReclaimingOurCalling#tlap
A5 I am inspired by my students every day. Their parents are encouraging on a regular basis. But, I would not be in this profession if it were not for my wife supporting the move, the cut in pay. The paychecks may be smaller but the rewards,
. . .
A5 Hands down my husband. He does so many things (including laundry) and the biggest one is just listen. When I’m happy, sad, or on the edge of a breakdown he is always right there. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A6 developing a new mission vision with the help of our students, parents and staff. We are also looking more at restorative justice in our building #tlap
#tlap A6a A couple of years ago I gave serious thought to working towards a post-grad teacher prep program through @RioSaladoOnline .. I took the tests and got the letters of reference. What’s holding me back? Doubt on how I could manage a roomful of 2nd graders.
A6. No matter the initiative, I often feel a conflict between the time it takes to do the standard work and the time I know is essential in building relationships. Finding solutions to this tension (and many others) is why I wanted to write the book! #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
Help us pick a name for the new bomb squad robot! The bomb squad picked from over 2,500 submissions from students in the Sioux Falls area. Now you can help pick the winner.
A6 A struggle I see is balancing empathy with high expectations. We often see things in education as either/or and this has to be a balance, we need both but I often see lower expectations when empathy is involved. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A4 Parents, colleagues, professors & my husband have all been my constant supporters - who have believed & had faith in my professional growth & development as an educator in making a differences to the lives of children #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A5: Mr. Ken Stanek, my very first principal...he took a chance and invested in me. Since 1987 I’ve been an elementary teacher, elementary principal, college professor, & school board member. A big THANKS to Ken for giving this hometown girl a chance! #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A6. Focusing all of my attention to moderating #BookCampPD rather than hundreds of students/their teachers. It is time for educators to select books they would like as our Winter/Spring focus. There are several #tlap books and others to select from. https://t.co/S9Ahi4qfgc VOTE!!
PLCs!! We are working hard at collaborating like we never have before. We have let ourselves become vulnerable which has been a little uncomfortable but so worth it. #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A6: Working on helping our families understand trauma and toxic stress. Still fighting the homework battle with families who refuse to listen to the research. Also continue to seek to be better and understand equity issues to make our school better #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A6 We are looking at team teaching as we look at all our different styles and comfort levels. We want every student to succeed and are struggling with high school images and attitudes of not enjoying school & being disengaged. Doing what we can. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A6. How do we personalize the learning experience so focus is not solely on academic achievement but the whole child. Educators believe this but it’s getting others to understand this approach. #tlap
A5: I could easily say family, friends, professional colleagues, & mentors- & that would be true. But, honestly, it's the students who daily reinforce my calling with smiles, hugs, eyes that light up with new knowledge, & the "Thank you for listening." #ReclaimingOurCalling#tlap
A6- I think somewhere on the horizon is some deeper curriculum alignment and more common assessments which has the potential to bring us together or really tear at what people are doing in the classroom #tlap
I’m inspired by our students too, Dan. Thanks so much for sharing this.
PS We asked a student to write the foreword for my new book and I’m SO pumped about it. :) #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
One of my mentors (@RLGMike) taught me how to magnify strengths while mitigating weaknesses. Have eyes to see a teacher’s artisan qualities. Leverage them! Applies to all relationships. We don’t need to be a genius. Be a genius maker. @LizWiseman#tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A6 My colleagues and I are strategically integrating technology usage for our Ss to collaborate with one another such as projects and PBL lessons. Any suggestions? #tlap
A6 - Social media and kids. Kids are exposed to the internet at a very early age. Screen time and social media are topics that I feel kids are struggling to find a healthy balance.
#tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by brilliant people like you who have informed & inspired my thinking! Ultimately I’ve come to understand that learning is about relationships, empathy & high levels of self-awareness & awareness of others! #TLAP
A6. Integrating Social Science standards into ELA units has been hard! We are wrestling with this, knowing how important it is to facilitate citizenship #tlap#reclaimingourcalling
A6: Working hard to get my dept on board with our 1:1 initiative and how to meaningfully integrate technology into the curriculum. #ReclaimingOurCalling#TLAP
A5 Continued... Dr. Devin NEVER doubts my abilities...EVER! It's insane. Her faith in me makes me go for the seemingly impossible. It's crazy what one person was believing in you can do for the mind & soul!
YOU are that teacher for your Ss, too!
#tlap
A7: Technology changes in the classroom over the past decade have been the toughest for me to see my colleagues struggle with. There are many holdouts who refuse to go w/ the changes & not balance traditional teaching w/ 21st Century Skill development. #TLAP
Q7. What is a passion you possess that you hope others value in you? (And how have you sought out the strengths of your students?!) #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A6: we no longer have an intervention specialist to work with students. She is now a coach for the teachers in our building. We are working though the change of support. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A6 - Something that needs to be on the horizon is a better understanding of how we learn by teachers/students/parents. Couple with that learning strategies (retrieval practice, dual coding, etc.) that have shown evidence of improved retention of material. #tlap
A2 A huge part is tied to interactions among everyone in the building...greetings, class activities, inquiries, constructive conversations, recognitions, etc. Establishing welcoming/helpful/friendly environment for all is vital. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
Hi Amanda, In my experience an educator’s age hasn’t limited their willingness to learn and grow as much as the culture we’re working in. (Sometimes age is indicative of additional wisdom and experiences which can be seen as positives.) #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A5 Continued... Dr. Devin NEVER doubts my abilities...EVER! It's insane. Her faith in me makes me go for the seemingly impossible. It's crazy what one person believing in you can do for the mind & soul!

A4: Our purpose is to leave this world better than we found it. We do this by creating empathetic, kind, curious, innovative risk takers who grow to hold these values sacred. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A6 Trying to develop engaging activities but at the same time make them meaningful. My class is struggling with this in math this year so I’m constantly looking for new ideas! #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling

A6 I’ve relocated my life to HK so out of schools first time in my career but looking towards doctorate degree to continue to contribute to education - so new learning & research in near future #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A7. I hope others value how I'm passionate about supporting meaningful and student-centered change. (Not change for the sake of change.) This often means I'm open to innovating, supporting others, and taking responsible risks if kids could benefit. #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A6: We’ll be looking at new social science and science curriculum, and while I’m incredibly excited for new materials and resources, I want to make sure we remember that we don’t teach curriculum, we teach students. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A7 My biggest passion is doing what it takes to help students like school by building relationships, having fun and being a little crazy. Lol I love music, dancing, games. I push the limits of creativity and push the comfort zone. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
Q7. What is a passion you possess that you hope others value in you? (And how have you sought out the strengths of your students?!) #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
Q5. My father when I was in school. Now my loving husband. My father passed before I became a teacher but he is the one who got me started on this path! #TLAP#ReclamingOurCalling
A6: Getting teachers past the "I have to cover all this stuff in the curriculum by __ date" & getting them to slow down, to NOT try to cover everything, to be creative & take risks, & to focus on mastery & excellence of relevant content & skills. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
A7: I think my passion for sharing the past in exciting ways is one of the big things I hope people see in me. I try to offer a variety of assignments to my students to help them get to bring out their own strengths! #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A7 - I’d say my greatest strength is always being positive each day. It’s something that I believe sets the tone for every class and school. As for strengthening students, that would be a strong belief system that they can do anything if we challenge them in a loving way. #tlap
A7: I really try to approach teaching like I’m an artist... creativity is, I believe, right up there with relationships... I try to help my kids discover and employ their creativity... #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling
She's the BEST! I can not talk to her for a long time, and when we meet up for coffee to discuss my next cannonball in moment, she is right there to amplify my desire and pour fuel on my fire to chase my passion! She is incredible. Wish she were on Twitter! #tlap

#tlap A7a I go the distance. That’s what I hope others value in me.
I reflect some and try stuff out a lot.
If we’re not having fun it’s time to start over.
A7 I like trying to instil creativity & design at the heart of teaching but it can be tough because tradition starts with the notion there is a right answer. If there is already an answer I struggle with wanting to be a part of it. Ask @CaseyNeistat about working @nytimes#tlap
In reply to
@GustafsonBrad, @CaseyNeistat, @nytimes
A7- I hope peers recognize you passion for seeing what’s behind our students behavior! Building relationships and loving on them to help erase the trauma not add to it! #TLAP
A7 Determination and a willingness to support, support, support. I’ve seen students grow so much in their ability to persevere through tough tasks and become confident in their thinking. They love to help one another as well. So encouraging as their teacher #tlap
Hey Phil...how you presented this makes me want to hear a story or learn about the past from you. Funny how passion is contagious, right?! #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
A7 - Using strategies in the classroom that better increase retention of material...keeping knowledge the main thing when it comes to the classroom.

#tlap Q7. I have worked to approach students in a balanced manner. Strict with clear expectations balanced with loving-non-judgemental and humorous-VERY IMPORTANT especially in breaking down emotional walls/barriers to learning.
A7: to be inbashedly and fearlessly yourself. To be able to laugh and forgive yourself and to give yourself the same grace you would give others. To not let the negativity and naysayers and critics have a place in your life. #tlap
A7: I hope others value my willingness to try new things and my desire to keep learning. To bring out my students strengths, I make a point of getting to know them, as people, not just pupils. #tlap#ReclaimingOurCalling

She is a blessing to so many of her students. I wish she were on Twitter!
But, when I meet her for coffee next time, I'll show her my tweets and tell her all of these things--as I always do!
Some times her current grad Ss show her before I can. ;) #tlap

#tlap A7b One of my funnest learning experiences, ever, was in US Navy firefighting school, learning how to put out a Class D fire. Fun doesn’t have to be ha-ha. It can be that feeling of grit one gets overcoming a challenge. Ask S how we might light their fire?
I interrupt my #tlap chat tweets to say @KymberliJoye killed it on #TheVoice. Girl, God is using you now and you could feel the anointing through the tv and He will still open doors like He did for @dannygokey and @mandisaofficial even if you don’t win.
A7. Passion for creativity and positivity are what I hope others can value in me. I try to contribute to the greater good. If they succeed then I fee successful, too. #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling

Q7. What is a passion you possess that you hope others value in you? (And how have you sought out the strengths of your students?!) #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling

"Education is the ethical North Star of humanity." #tlap
A7 Starting with relationships and breaking away from the traditional way I was doing things, more time for Ss to collab, learn together, me to interact with them, want to make all Ss welcome #tlap
A7: I'm passionate about connecting learning to my students' lives, hopes, dreams, and life/career aspirations. I'm passionate about teaching them what they NEED, which I find engages them and motivates them to use their strengths as they learn. #ReclaimingOurCalling#tlap
Sometimes, the best way to help a teacher maximize their instructional time is to actually honor *their* time (e.g. meetings, personalized PD, etc.). #TLAP#ReclaimingOurCalling
#tlap a7 pt 2- I seek out student strengths by never doubting their ability- children have an amazing ability to RISE when given trust, confidence and heartfelt understanding.
A7. Passion(s) of mine is always joyful, humble, and servant leadership style. Hoping that creates a welcoming school and easy to approach human being.

I love the point in the school year when you feel like your class settles into the groove. No other way to describe it. Some classes get there in Oct. Others take until Jan. No matter when you get there, it's the best feeling in the world. #KidsDeserveIt#TLAP#LearnLAP#5thChat
