Tonight we are going to talk about student leadership Teams (SLT) in your building. We want to hear your stories about your SLT's and how they impact your building.#appleEDUchat
A1: Student leadership team allow students to take more responsibility in their own learning. It promotes student agency. However, it takes a lot of guidance and mentoring from the teacher. #AppleEDUchat
A1: having a student leadership team definitely allows students to feel they are heard and their opinions matter. Allows them to take more accountability for the school! #AppleEDUchat
A1: Starting a leadership team not only builds confidence in the students, but it gives students a voice. It really makes me proud when you see students who are excited to provide PD to teachers or present at conferences. #AppleEDUChat
#AppleEduChat starting a student leadership team gives students an opportunity to showcase their talents and be tech leaders within their school community, which for many of the kids might be the first time theyāve ever had the opportunity to be singled out for something positive
A1: Since I'm not ~yet~ in my career, I'm answering from my role in high school. Student Leadership Teams allowed me to develop my own responsibility for my academic development. I saw value in my learning when I was at it's forefront. #appleeduchat
A1: One small sneaky reason we are starting student tech teams is because some teachers need help with tech and it comes better from the kids! #appleeduchat
Liz from Ohio here! A1: Student leadership teams can help expose teachers to ideas and paths they may not discover individually. This can be challenging because itās sometimes hard to admit Ss know or see things we donāt #AppleEDUChat
A1) Advantages - believe that Ss would take ownership build skills necessary for life later on (high school, college or and work). Struggle - can be building buy-in. #AppleEDUChat
A1 Student leadership teams empower learners, build confidence, support teachers in their growth & learning, and offers a platform for student voice and agency #AppleEDUchat
A1: Student leadership teams give students the opportunity to take charge and be the experts. We know that the teacher is not the almighty holder of knowledge anymore (aka - teacher text with the answers). Students can explore, learn, and share. #AppleEDUchat
A2: I've been lucky to have very supportive admin. Gearing the leadership team towards the goals of the school/district helps too. Having an organized plan is key. #AppleEduChat
A1: Have a student team in charge of answer tech support and other classrooms issues helps to teach students to re self-reliant and eases som of the pressure off the teacher. #AppleEDUchat
A1 Technology is so ingrained in studentsā lives now that theyāre often discovering whatās newer and better before the teachers. This gives them the opportunity to bring that knowledge to the table. #AppleEDUchat
A2: I think maybe the best way for buy in would be to try and put together a team of students to present to staff/admin why there should be a student leadership team! #AppleEDUchat
A2 Staff and admin actually love having students come into their classrooms for support - this is a great entry point #AppleEDUchat Then they are hooked - everyone
Student leadership teams can help teachers feel more supported in their classrooms when using/learning new tech/apps because they have already built relationships with their students & can ask them for help #AppleEDUChat
A2) Ss are creating videos to introduce themselves & a bit about what we do. We will start a pod/vod cast to help with routine issues. Then Ss can show a bit of what they know. #AppleEDUChat
A2: I think it can be helpful to hear from other schools whoāve utilized different Ss leadership models and hear about their successes- we learn best together! #AppleEDUChat
A2: Get kids doing PD for teachers. Once teachers and admin starts to how our students want to partner with us as learners, they can't say no! #appleeduchat
A1. Student leadership teams give a voice to who we need to be listening to the most! Listen to students. Learn from them. Let them lead. #AppleEDUChat
A2: I am often referred to in my buildings as āthe girl who gets excited about everything!ā I definitely love lifting up others and encouraging them! I have found that the snowball effect works - other follow and get excited too! Share your story! #AppleEDUchat
Q2: Getting buy in from other staff was easy once they knew what we were able to do and who I previously worked for. I was an . @AppleCare at-home rep before teaching. #AppleEDUchat
We have student #GeniusSquad tech teams at our secondary schools who run iPad help desks for students who are have issues with their iPads. A few of our elementary schools have Genius Squad students who support teachers in the classroom & create video announcements #AppleEDUchat
A2 I would hope it wouldnāt take much convincing when students want to take an active role in contributing towards/improving their own education. That being said, having teachers highlight early successes would probably help. #AppleEDUchat
Our tech director designated a few kids in one of our elementary schools at "tech helpers" to help teachers with a/v and keep the laptop carts in order...gave them hats and they loved it...helped the teachers a bunch too. #AppleEDUchat
A2: I love our student tech team! Itās a great way to build student confidence and they LOVE being leaders! One manageable challenge is keeping them informed when updates come out :) #AppleEDUchat
A3 I highly recommendgojng through the Apple Distinguished Schools process. It ignites building wide reflection and a true examination of needs and opportunity for student-led growth #AppleEDUchat
A3: we put up posters with funny memes attached and a QR code that leads teachers to a google form requesting info about device and specific need so I can deploy the appropriate team member. #AppleEDUchat
A3. We are proactive by send out out surveys using google forms asking what needs that are needed and also use iMessage and a google form for support requests #AppleEDUchat
A2: Show staff the benefits! There are so many amazing ways that iPads can redefine what goes on in (and out!) of the classroom. Student leaders can help staff to see all of the amazing possibilities come to life! #AppleEDUchat
A3 applying a #designthinking mindset to the challenge, starting e w empathy interviews, unpacking them & identifying trends re: needs & experiences would go a long ways to need finding #AppleEduChat#dtk12chat
A3 I highly recommendgojng through the Apple Distinguished Schools process. It ignites building wide reflection and a true examination of needs and opportunity for student-led growth #AppleEDUchat
A3: I think for me I already know we could use Ss getting Ts more excited about technology & our Ss know a little more on how to use creation apps so I would start there as a building need. But Ss could also survey Ts on what they feel we need #AppleEDUchat
A3: The Apple Student Mentor books have been a great resource to guide students through the technical and "soft skills" necessary to support others!
#appleeduchat
A3) We created a survey of school staff, collected the data & then prioritized what we needed to learn. I think this group will do the same. #AppleEDUChat
Student leadership teams have designated #GeniusSquad area/booth in school library or school store rooms that students & teachers can come to every period & also have ticketing systems using QR codes & Google Forms to collect & track iPad issues #AppleEDUChat
A3: variety in the data is essential for needs assessment- measurable items such as test scores can point you in the right direction, but also important are levels of student motivation and engagement. Teacher, admin, and community input is equally valuable. #AppleEDUChat
A3: I think it is important for team leaders to know what the staff is already doing, what they wish they could be doing, and what they could do more efficiently. That can happen through surveys or conversations with Ss AND Ts! #AppleEDUchat
A3 Polling the faculty would help, but students often recognize needs on their own - Iāve seen them recommend apps and techniques to faculty on multiple occasions. #AppleEDUchat
A2: Show administrators what good can come from their implementation in the classroom. SLT's don't have to be expensive and typically require little to no effort on their parts-- it would be a missed opportunity to not implement them. #appleeduchat
A3: Our #applepips surveyed the staff before an upcoming PD and then created station-rotations to teach photo annotation, @flipgrid, and #swiftplaygrounds based on the teacher feedback! Showed them how to be responsive to others' needs! Led by the amazing @ankoser! #appleeduchat
A3: Our tech team just created a staff survey to find out what their priorities are when it comes to tech! Not everyoneās favorite way to communicate, but it is efficient and will tell us who needs what :) #AppleEDUchat
A3: I have the most luck finding out what my staff needs by being present: walking around the building, stepping in their rooms, asking about something I know they are interested in, which often leads to further conversations. #AppleEDUChat
A3 Polling the faculty would help, but students often recognize needs on their own - Iāve seen them recommend apps and techniques to faculty on multiple occasions. #AppleEDUchat
A3: we put up posters with funny memes attached and a QR code that leads teachers to a google form requesting info about device and specific need so I can deploy the appropriate team member. #AppleEDUchat
I've found surveys helpful for getting a snapshot, though not as great for uncovering the underlying reasons for the need; until I did some interview work, I kept coming up with solutions I thought were neat but didnt address the problem #AppleEduChat
I know! It also amazes me when I show people AirDrop and theyāve never used it! They get SO excited! One of my favorite simple tools for sure! #AppleEDUchat
A3: I asked my tech team what they wish they did more of in the classroom in regards to tech. We started there. Wanted to work on team building skills so they are creating tutorials for teachers around their favorite apps. #AppleEDUchat
A4: I started the process in my own classroom. Having S volunteers answer tech questions from other Sās in our room. Once other teachers heard they wouldnāt have to troubleshoot issues the idea took off. #AppleEDUchat
I've pitched a revamp of student Senate & class officers into a single more legislative & financial body several times, to little interest; tradition be a hard nut to crack, even if it is proving less effective #AppleEDUChat
A4: I used to have students apply with an interest application. That way I could see how many students at the school we had interested and decide from there how to schedule so everyone had an opportunity to lead. #AppleEduChat
A4: our district crew, led by the awesome @jesgarrigan has team planning meetings to make sure we are all on the same page and share ideas and resources through weekly chats and a Schoology group. #AppleEDUchat
A4: supporting students in learning how to work together and defining their roles and responsibilities. Scheduling time for feedback and improvement on a monthly basis. #AppleEduchat
A3: I have the most luck finding out what my staff needs by being present: walking around the building, stepping in their rooms, asking about something I know they are interested in, which often leads to further conversations. #AppleEDUChat
A4: I started with video app overviews that give kids a look at the app. Then they create a project based on a task list, and take a quiz to check for mastery (because we want master leaders!). Check out vids here: https://t.co/Xc79R8RGyn#AppleEDUchat
A4: I can start this process by asking & interviewing students who may be interested in being on a student technology leadership team (since technology is a huge part of my role as an Innovation Coach) this would be an easy place for me to start. #AppleEDUchat
A4: this is our second year with middle school and high school tech clubs and theyāre already doing some awesome new things with coding and robotics! Check out @mms_swat and @MHSTechClub#AppleEDUChat
A4: We started with one school (we have 21) & now spreading out to more schools as we go 1:1 iPads. Working together with my awesome building tech captains to grow up our iteams! Collaboration is KEY! #AppleEDUchat
A4 in my building I started with a google form to gauge interest from students and invited all of the students who filled the form out to an initial meeting and shared my plan. Invited them to a Schoology group to keep communication going beteeen meetings. #AppleEDUchat
So true! I donāt know how I did it when I had to plug in devices! š Feels like such a Stone Age way to do it now! Lol from the Flinstones to the Jetsons ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø #AppleEDUchat

A4: I am in a school that just implemented iPads K-8 this year. I know there is a small group of student experts at the junior high, but I would like to work with some of the elementary kids to create projects that can be used for teacher and student development. #AppleEDUChat
A4: I also would love to talk to teachers at my school that have already created leadership teams...at our school we have a Student-Parent PBIS Team! Itād be good to find out how they got started and maybe we could combine?! @hayesawawm#AppleEDUchat
A4: Got them pumped up. Made ID badges. Using Appleās 7 Pillars for a culture of learning as a base/creed. Allowed them to design 1st project. Deployed team members today for the 1st time on an āeasyā task to get a taste of the empowerment. They love it even more. #AppleEDUchat
A4: #appleEDUChat talk to students in person. Ask them what needs to improve. I visit media center and talk. Now they say, āWhat are you going to ask us today?ā I want to start a genius bar team. Student surveys
A4: I started with video app overviews that give kids a look at the app. Then they create a project based on a task list, and take a quiz to check for mastery (because we want master leaders!). Check out vids here: https://t.co/Xc79R8RGyn#AppleEDUchat
A4: The #applepips - Kindergarten-5th graders - started with the basics: apple TV mirroring, charging, updating. Each week our captain, @ankoser, would teach them a new skill and then communicated to everyone that if they needed help to call on an #applepip! #appleeduchat
A4: At my former school, students filled out surveys and an application to find what area of SL they would be best fit for. We started SLT with our 6th graders. I would tech teams at our middle schools. We thought of starting a small group with our teacher aides. #AppleEDUChat
A great example to follow for student leadership teams is this fabulous Ted talk. These students are amazing and the leader is pretty cool as well #AppleEDUchat@AprilRequardhttps://t.co/qZGmC49VYH
A5: Longterm goal - get our tech teams out into the community helping others with tech and sharing THEIR stories of growth and preparedness for the world. #appleeduchat
A5: District FB and Twitter accounts. Email announcements.... Encourage teachers to share stories, praise in class. Get the word out anyway possible so the team doesn't fade away. #AppleEDUchat
Q5: A great way to do this is through SOCIAL MEDIA-- not only does it give you the opportunity to share your victories with the parents of the SLTs, but it aids other teachers, wanting to experience the same success.
#appleeduchat
Q5 we are trying to get all S to have digital portfoliosthat can be built on year after year and can be shared out. We have also stared a district hashtag on Tuesdays to share successes #AppleEDUchat
A5: Shorterm goal - have our tech teams start to use Clips/iMovie and #everyonecancreate curriculum (don't you LOVE IT!!??) to celebrate their love of tech, their unique skills, and their creative solutions with their school and district! #appleeduchat#SDOLTECH
A4: I joined an amazing High School interdisciplinaryprogram this year and we have meetings with students, community members, and parents stakeholders monthly to make sure we are heading in the right direction and constantly improving so everyone wins! #AppleEDUchat
We have a website that needs to be updated & hold a celebration dinner for our summer interns to do presentations about what they learned but also need to come up with way to share our weekly stories #AppleEDUChat
A5: We have a site within our schools that would be great for them to share information on. They could also share on twitter, seesaw, and in highlights/email updates to the community! #AppleEDUChat
A5 we hope to start a #youtube channel to share successes as well as would@love to have a district @Flipgrid for S to have their successes and voices heard #AppleEDUchat
A4: Once we have a team up and running, it would be important to ask our students what they want to see more of in our classrooms. This would give the team a great place to start on professional development! #AppleEDUchat
A4: A small team has been piloting tech teams within several buildings. @ankoser has created an amazing course on @Schoology that touches on digital citizenship, tech tips, and other great resources! #AppleEDUchat
A5: This would be a great addition to our student showcases! Families and community members are invited in to listen as our students present on the work they're proud of. #AppleEDUchat
A5: I embrace my students as leaders and have them become the educators. I@ focusing on taking risks and stepping out of my comfort zone- learn new things- growth mindset- they follow! #AppleEDUchat
Tech them to properly facilitate discussions, share their ideas, and communicate effectively!!! Transferable skills are vital to the success of a good leader! #AppleEDUchat
A6: student leadership can be used to increase student engagement and accountability for our building. Students could feel proud of teaching teachers. And maybe some behaviors would decrease because they would feel a sense of leadership and belonging. #AppleEDUchat
A6: Through student leadership, social awareness, empathy and agency can be promoted amongst the student body. It's important that teachers lead by example, but it's even better when students model behaviour! #AppleEDUchat
A6 This is a reach but in addition to their support work with teachers and students Iād like to use them to work with students on digital literacy (especially those who struggle repeatedly) #AppleEDUchat
A6: To help spread the love and use of tech! Students are passionate and can show Ts the benefits! When kids are excited, it is hard for teachers to ignore, even if they're apprehensive! #AppleEDUchat
A6: To help inspire a shift towards learner-centered spaces, ownership, agency, problem-solving, and CREATIVITY that is authentic. REAL. Tangible for our kids. We need them as much as they need us! #appleeduchat
A6: I like the idea of having students teach digital citizenship. I feel like it would be received better than another lecture from adults. #AppleEDUchat
Q6 we have a new group of Educators that we are meeting with once a month to train and build capacity to try to meet the needs of our 147 schools and 90,000 plus students the hope is to continue to build leaders and then pass that to S #AppleEDUchat
A6: We have had a variety of ways to demonstrate student leadership through Student Mentors, Student Council, Student Ambassador, Green Thumb Club. I like idea of starting Student Tech Teams. #AppleEDUChat
We have had student #GeniusSquad members plan & lead tech sessions at district GeniusCon where they teach staff & students about iPads, apps, robotics, & STEM #AppleEDUChat#EveryoneCanCode
