Hi Lucretia! Great seeing you again.
In and out tonight, I'm Kendra super excited to finally remember thanks to my reminder text
A1: need to learn at a young age the same reason why those that play pro sports played young, they'll fall behind and not make it
A1: Just like Concepts of Print, Concepts of Tech are important for students to build early on!
Amazing that you have Ts taking that on. So great!
better late than never. and this is barely late.
A1: Young Ss are ripe for learning! If we start with using modern tools, there’s no transition later! It’ll be what they know!
Jenna from Lake County!! EdTech STEAM Specialist
Hey, it’s Brandi. Great seeing you again. How are your steps on FitBit going?
DUDE! I think you're my accountabili-buddy for goals...now If I can just remember what they are. ;-)
A1: Tech is their foundation. From ordering food at a restaurant, to buying movie tix, etc. it will be their life.
Hi everyone, I'm the Technology Specialist with Culver City Unified
A1: If we start them young, their possibilities are endless! We won't have to teach them how to use tech, they will already know!
hello! I'm an coach in Whittier Union HS District. 😊 howdy neighbor!
A1 Its not just the thing their parents hand them when they need them 2 be distracted its a learning tool https://t.co/00R8AeF6Lt
Welcome Back! It’s not the same with you.
A1 Because they can! It's engaging and they are using practical skills and learning at the same time!
More time for learning the material and the fun stuff!
A1: Let’s start them off right. Start early.
A1: can take kids places they may otherwise never go. Learning young how to create and design their own learning is vital
Seriously?!?! Mic Drop Already?!?! https://t.co/7s9PB9PK1T
A1: Just like Concepts of Print, Concepts of Tech are important for students to build early on!
Hi ! Kelly Orvick, Tech Coach Lodi Unified It was a good Monday!
Eek, good luck! Fast, nimble thumbs!
A1 Its paramount that little 1s get an equal opp 2 touch & use the tech to explore! Want to build solid tech citizens, start here!
A1 Builds a foundation of tech for education and it expands their ability to multi task.
amazing to see this happening already. 1st graders were exposed to tech last year and are so ahead.
Hello ! Popping in for a few minutes. Mandi, Math TOSA, Bay Area
Hello - here to see what you all are doing with the little ones! Set the foundation for HS level...
its a different world w/diff needs & it's great to see people like Susan recognize and support that
He does stuff like that ;)
A1: Our youngest students can inspire their peers, and even their teachers by all they can accomplish with tech.
A1 Tech is so important for little learners BECAUSE those grades set the foundation for a lifetime of successful learning!
A1: To students it isn't technology it is their world. We the adults put labels like technology integration into what we do.
This is it EXACTLY! It'll be their foundation!
A1: The primary grades set the stage for how to interact with tech mechanically and socially.
A1b: There’s much research on young children and an aptitude for language acquisition - what if the language we teach is coding?
everyone hits the ball every once in a while
A1: Tech integration prepares Ss 4 life. Can't prepare Ss for jobs that don't exist yes if we don't give the skills to succeed
Schools and districts need to invest in those grades too, lots of schools and districts invest in the older Ss
Yes! That global perspective is so important. Perhaps early exposure will open their eyes to more possibilities.
A1. Ss will share their ideas in ways that we're not aware of in the future, the need solid skills to navigate
Not only use, but (the good kind) manipulate and design on their own. https://t.co/thbkjxcHyg
A1: If we start them young, their possibilities are endless! We won't have to teach them how to use tech, they will already know!
A1: Why wait? A child’s potential is boundless. Many time, it’s the adults that limit their path.
A1 just like with all learning, plant seeds early to reap dividend down the road. Plus digicit early builds better habits
Heeeelllloooooo See if I keep you on the phone long enough I can rope you into =)
Yes! They have to learn how to use it AND how to use it appropriately!
A1: If done right, the problem solving skills and innovation mindset can start early with tech. Teach them to not be scared to try
A1: it helps set expectations, build background knowledge and show Ss power of tech as a tool.
A1: If we are teaching kids to learn, solve problems, and find information, then without technology we are missing a huge piece.
The layer below always sets the tone for the layer above. Its like building https://t.co/BcHCIgmGFh
Hello - here to see what you all are doing with the little ones! Set the foundation for HS level...
Yes! Start early. Young Ss CAN do it. It’s often the adults that hold them back.
A1: they aren't afraid to fail, build the foundation of failing forward & design thinking
It’s Jenna from Lake County :)
A1: They need to build the skills to use tech appropriately so they can use it seamlessly to create, design, and display later on.
A1: Young children are naturally curious. They are not afraid to "push buttons" on tech & therefore learn very quickly!
Also, Computer back up and running. Whew!
Hello I'm new to chatting but I'm Kelly checking in from Las Vegas teaching 2nd grade.
If we start young with our HS Ss will be better prepared for the rigors of college research
YES! Love that you threw in the ! Why wait? They are using the tech at home! https://t.co/m3pCLXlCFs
A1 just like with all learning, plant seeds early to reap dividend down the road. Plus digicit early builds better habits
YES! it has to be a part of the foundation.
A1: We often underestimate when can be accomplished in the primary grades. They can do much more than imagine when taught how
especially since they may be exposed to tech at a young age, but not digcit
Hi David. Great to see you. Was your profile pic from Hollywood or FL?
Haha, thx. Computer back up. No way to keep up from the phone!
Many know more than the Ts and we have to be ok with that and embrace that.
Agreed! We are 1:1 TK-12! It's amazing what they (TK-2) can do!
A1: Young children are not afraid they will break the internet when using tech, right
see why we look to as the expert?! drop that mic! https://t.co/cqfwsK8zDi
A1b: There’s much research on young children and an aptitude for language acquisition - what if the language we teach is coding?
Well said, Jenn. Give them the tools; they’ll surprise you with what they know.
A.1- We want our set up our littlest learners with the foundations that will propel them to be comfortable using tech in the class
A1: We need to teach Ss how to problem solve by reaching out to the world to help solve those problems
my 4 year old knows her way around and iPad better than some HS Ss
YES! https://t.co/EwJ8H0asT0
A1: Tech integration prepares Ss 4 life. Can't prepare Ss for jobs that don't exist yes if we don't give the skills to succeed
I say that we are in their way a lot!
A1 It's all These little peeps know.
Most of the time, it's not even the kiddos who are afraid. We have to be sure they don't learn that fear! https://t.co/7lfctkw20c
A1: If done right, the problem solving skills and innovation mindset can start early with tech. Teach them to not be scared to try
Hi Kelly. Welcome. is our reason we
and better than a LOT of HS teachers I bet!
I was trying to explain to a 3rd grade T & she had no idea what I was saying - She thought typing was Tech
A1 Kinder team at one of my sites made extreme growths in student achieve r, w & m with use if 1:2 iPads in their classrooms
A1: It is one of the many tools that students can use to create.
I never thought of that, but you're right ...how much easier to learn as a child. It will become 2nd nature.
My 4 year old amazes me, can't wait to see when she actually goes to school what she can do with tech
A1 Creativity is still alive + well in primary. Tech = platform for self-expression, choice, creating! https://t.co/EHkDqmHBo7
Me too. It’s a big part of my message in many sessions I lead
seriously the case for many kids for sure and I bet ur 4 year old has been exposed to
as says-push all the buttons! https://t.co/KhEZPnksQA
A1: Young children are naturally curious. They are not afraid to "push buttons" on tech & therefore learn very quickly!
Love that they aren't afraid to fail!
A1:It's important to start good tech/ habits early! If we don't teach them respectful/responsible use, who will?
Learning that in my new position just how far behind some Ts are
YEEEEEESH!!! https://t.co/KSz0ywGnu5
I was trying to explain to a 3rd grade T & she had no idea what I was saying - She thought typing was Tech
Oh man =( Well things are changing. Help her see what can be done
A1: "Oh, the thinks you can think!" Imagine what we can do with those littlest learners as big learners when foundation set early.
exactly! Let's set our expectations higher for our K-2's! https://t.co/4ai73GaMAH
A1: We often underestimate when can be accomplished in the primary grades. They can do much more than imagine when taught how
. We today could do that, tho changes faster than any of the others—can it “done" in 3rd.
Agree. There's no stigma for failing. Only a world of possibilities. https://t.co/w08q3mvnSc
A1: they aren't afraid to fail, build the foundation of failing forward & design thinking
That’s it! It’s not just digital natives. Soon they’ll be digital.
THIS, folks... They ain't gonna break nuthin' https://t.co/Oh4G7mpaUS
A1: We often underestimate when can be accomplished in the primary grades. They can do much more than imagine when taught how
We are all living in a digital world where Instant information is what is expected.
A1: Jumping in- from Chico, CA! Our littlest learners are digital natives! They know so much by watching others!
that's so true, student emulate habits they see so why not help them learn, especially screen time balance.
Blows me away at times, had a T today confused as to why she couldn't log into GC using personal acct
only have to watch the littles for a few minutes to see all of the collaboration and problem solving while using tech.
Krista from SE Michigan, jumping in late. Hey, everyone!!
Always love this message. Can’t imagine what the world will be like in a few years. https://t.co/qIJut8xWBb
A1: Tech integration prepares Ss 4 life. Can't prepare Ss for jobs that don't exist yes if we don't give the skills to succeed
We set foundations for every subject area, too right? That's what K-2 is all about! https://t.co/WCg25vxEZv
A1: "Oh, the thinks you can think!" Imagine what we can do with those littlest learners as big learners when foundation set early.
If you haven't already check out GAfE for littles.
Welcome Christi. Yes these little guys know SO much. Meet them where they're at!
Hi Krista. Great to see you again
Her district doesnt even have chrome books ..only a computer lab! its her districts fault!
. It would be the idea that they were “finished learning that” that I’d want to avoid.
A1: Watching my own kids, I have realized that it is a skill they will need just as much as learning how to tie their shoes.
Madona sings: We are living in a digital world, and I am a digital girl...oh oh... https://t.co/2U4tlmrpR1
We are all living in a digital world where Instant information is what is expected.
Just starting a new job to support K-2 teachers by teaching lessons to their students in the computer lab.
There she is!!! Hey friend! =) How's it hangin in Michigan?
I can hardly keep up on Tweetdeck!
Welcome, Krista! The party is just getting started!
Good point...I suspect the basics are timeless, much like core subjects. https://t.co/1JCYVMd4zx
. We today could do that, tho changes faster than any of the others—can it “done" in 3rd.
more like teaching the comfort w/change & skills adaptability so when tech does change there isnt fear
I feel that way (& I’m one of the 4 who started ) It’s def a fast pace chat
wow- I have my former 3rd gr team all using Classroom. and they want to go next level.
in Las Vegas has accounts for all 320,000+ Ss, K-12, it's an exciting time to teach in Nevada!
Nice point! Let's teach primary grades digcit skills. open source lessons for all grades https://t.co/rEhOeLoC4L
especially since they may be exposed to tech at a young age, but not digcit
I have been telling Ts that even TKers can benefit from tech!
Yes! Tech changes too fast to ever be “done”.
Put the tools in their hands! https://t.co/wujbIjapzI
Well said, Jenn. Give them the tools; they’ll surprise you with what they know.
Absolutely! Expose Ss to, and encourage, digital making in all grade levels!
Yes. We can't let our hesitations hold them back!
A1-we need 2 be purposeful with the tech we use. Social skills, unstructured play & nontech imaginative games are still essential
A2: Fear of losing control? I'm not sure. Fear the Ss will break things?
A2 Having a student tech squad, older students who can come in and help alleviates a lot of the logistical concerns.
A2: I think "they're too young" is a mindset that can be opened through modeling, collaboration, and co-teaching!
A1: These learners do not know a world without technology! It is as like a pencil and paper to this generation.
Amazing! she had no knowledge of ....couldn't explain over the phone..wanted to show examples
Hi Veronica. Great to have you join us! The party just started
The skill I see you referring to isn't tech,it is the learn-unlearn-learn cycle Ss will need in the world https://t.co/Cxa78Q9yqY
A1: Tech integration prepares Ss 4 life. Can't prepare Ss for jobs that don't exist yes if we don't give the skills to succeed
A2: Show them what young Ss can do from other classes & demo lessons to get the Ss hooked and have the teacher follow
Hi. I'm jumping in with you. Megan from Southern California
sadly they're so afraid of breaking something. I say you can't break google per
A2: They aren’t confident in their own skills and can’t fix it when students have issues. FEAR of failing is the biggest hurdle.
Totally!! Anything for you =)
without a doubt! It's all important. We need to be aware to be purposeful - not using tech as a digital babysitter
Hey Megan! Thanks for joining us!
A2: Fear of failure in their Ss eyes, so many kids are exposed already, they don't want to mess up in front of the Ss
A2: Fear of "breaking" something. Risk taking/trying something new, being afraid the kids will know more.
I find Ts aren't afraid of the tech, just don't necessarily know what to do with it to make it purposeful
A2: Fixed mindset that young Ss can't handle tech integration. That fear is what holds Ts back on moving Ss forward in anything
A2: Many don’t know where to begin! They ask “How does that even look?” We can share samples! Some need to see it to believe it!
A2: That age is like the sea. When something goes wrong, it goes really wrong.
Similar responses today. K-3 Ts thinking was only for older kids.
A2: Primary classes run on rules and procedures rule. Teachers have to release control. What happens next can be scary.
Yet another reason why tech is not an "extra" / "one more thing". No diff from other content!
A2: Fear of failure. Promote risk-taking.
Could someone share Q1&2??
Hi Megan. Great to have you join us on
A2: Teachers who do not have high expectations for students doubt abilities. Model. "Can I try something in your class?"...
I agree! Fear is a HUGE deterrent!
Some attempt too many things at once, get overwhelmed, and "fail" our job is to guide away from too much
A2: Prim Ts know how impt. found. skills r. Show them how tech is a found. skill + how it can enhance teaching of other skills
Having a hand to hold while trying it, or someone to help them out the first time around.
A2: There is reluctance because Ts haven't taught with tech before, Ts are fearful and Ts are afraid Ss know more. That's OK!
A2: Ts are unfamiliar w/tech or unwilling to let Ss explore, Ts have their own fear of failure
TRUTH! Teachers look at me funny until they see it being done. Then they all want to join in!
haha that earworm is for right?
A2: I think a major consideration is screen time. Balance is KEY!
A2: Either the tech fails (glitches, etc.) or some kid comes across a beer ad with bikinis or something.
Can I like/love that comment a million times??!!
A2: Invitations to join us on an observation of a colleague's class where tech is accessible and crushing it for kids!
is now trending in USA, ranking 42
A2 Reluctant bcuz of tradition/preconceived notions about tech. Subtle hints, reminders & success of those around them will help
In honor of Gene Wilder...technology opens...Pure Imagination.
Speaks to the incredible need of purposeful PD, effective coaching, and constant follow-up! https://t.co/3fSKAIew0b
I find Ts aren't afraid of the tech, just don't necessarily know what to do with it to make it purposeful
We have to help Ts get past this! https://t.co/GZO5wM3U3D
A2: Fixed mindset that young Ss can't handle tech integration. That fear is what holds Ts back on moving Ss forward in anything
A2)Still some inequity around tech primary teachers have access too. Not as much lab time/devices. https://t.co/KDP4FHTU0A
A2 Having a student tech squad, older students who can come in and help alleviates a lot of the logistical concerns.
A2 Primary tchrs are concerned that tech will "get in the way" of the real learning. If used properly, tech enhances learning!
A1: Technology teaches collaboration, communication and problem solving. It opens the classroom walls!
A2 Fear of tech; doubt the littles can do it. We must model and show them they CAN!
A2: Acceptable use, safe searches, strategies to deal with embarrassing/indecent ads, etc.
Even we "experts" have to step back sometimes from too much
and on the flip side, so insanely innovative!
A2: Many primary teachers don't know where to start w/tech. Co-teach, provide support. Be a leader who is in trenches w/teachers.
Modeling and mini lessons do wonders for our littles with short attention spans and the need for structure.
Thats why coaches and tosas are so important!
Yes! Tech isn't age specific!
A3: Extensions that does text to speech allows young readers to identify & pronounce new vocabulary.
A2: Time management--foundational skills CAN be taught alongside tech skills. Have to MAKE time for it.
A2: We need to help them see the "why" of technology in learning. The old model was tech as a place or a thing -not learning.
I think that is the fear sometimes. Need 2 be willing to release responsibility for learning to the Ss.
That's where model lessons can come in handy. Just have to get in there.
i model it. all. the. time. don't panic if tech fails ask Ss for their ideas. Get them problem solving.
Yes! And truly transforms the teaching as well!
Suggestions on first lessons in the computer lab for K-2 students?
Agreed! They just need to release a bit to see what is possible! Sometimes sharing the vision helps!
Told...."they are only in 3rd grade" and I didn't know how to tactfully explain
VERY true! A lot of admin give devices first to 3+ or 4+
Absolutely! I loved when my kids would show me new things!
This is unfortunately very true! People think it's okay to leave out the littlest learners!
It is amazing/impt modeling to FAIL in front of our Ss. Normalize mistake-making.
A2: Yes, this...and laziness, and feeling low expectations, and deciding " is "bad", and, &, & https://t.co/KFHJcuAScU
I agree! Fear is a HUGE deterrent!
Makes for an even better lesson when Ss can be involved too
Typing is tech...just about as much as handwriting is language arts. https://t.co/3djsvsPZ49
I was trying to explain to a 3rd grade T & she had no idea what I was saying - She thought typing was Tech
A2 I run into the time factor, and it is impt that we show the parallel purposes & shared learnings, then they open up to tech
A2 Cont'd We held a personalized learning training over the sum that immersed all levels of Ts w new tech & ideas. Was phenomenal
A2: "busy" teaching "basics." Afraid of encouraging "screen time." Fear. Unsure where/how to start.
Yes! If there's no sense of immediacy to their own meaningful practice, they won't see reason to try it https://t.co/dDkcDR72fw
A2: We need to help them see the "why" of technology in learning. The old model was tech as a place or a thing -not learning.
A2: Giving up classroom control to students.
I personally tried to make my failures more of a joke, tended to engage the ss more
A2: Not the fear that Ss can't do it. It is harder at lower grades to take that risk, unknown. We know what happens w/ older Ss.
Agreed. Just show sample or your TK exemplars, and Ts are amazed! Helps them BELIEVE
I can't keep up! But that's half the fun.
Gah! I wish I could! That sounds like a blast!
High school kids are often the same :-) https://t.co/pYp2hJB5FR
Modeling and mini lessons do wonders for our littles with short attention spans and the need for structure.
A2: Fear of the management piece. The more we can provide the intro/foundation resources, the easier the creative lessons will be.
really see it as a curriic thing. Prim. Ts know how impt. it is to give basic skills + social dev. show how these wrk w/tech
When it should be ALL about the students!
Needs to happen more often, took me a long time to relinquish control, but my classes were better for it
Better late than never. Mike here from BassettUSD Tech TOSA.
Have to help them see past the thought that it's just "one more thing" - they need to see how it FITS ! https://t.co/ViXfZBuuEr
A2 I run into the time factor, and it is impt that we show the parallel purposes & shared learnings, then they open up to tech
Right?!?! "If not now, when?"
A2: Loss of control makes them afraid to try something they may not be 100% sure of. Isn't that what we ask students to do?
I did the same. Becomes the norm bc everyone makes mistakes. Supports class culture of acceptance.
Stuck in their ways, lack of knowledge, districts out of the loop, all contribute and its sad:( https://t.co/W1Cnnda1FA
Welcome Mike. Now the party’s starting
Awww man! Well we will just have to do another one for you and =)
Way better! Welcome, Michael!
A2: SAMR model is important. Use tech to improve student learning
A2b fear of not having all the answers, but that even applies in some of the HS classes, where Ss on phones can get answers quick
A2: This and then a dash of stubborn & a pinch of "too much" being based on zero data https://t.co/KFHJcuAScU
I agree! Fear is a HUGE deterrent!
omg I love this comeback! I'm totes stealing that one!
Woot!! Glad to see u Mike!
YES! This is what I think when I plan PD this year. Need to empower Ts to learn on their own.
A2: Time becomes a factor too with low tech skills. Examples and small successes helps build confidence.
. Agreed! Teachers that learn to use tech to accelerate learning instead of teach the tech itself maximize minutes.
And remember it’s okay to be at S level just don’t get stuck there. https://t.co/GAHGJfC3A8
A2: SAMR model is important. Use tech to improve student learning
Oh man this chat is moving fast!!! . You all are awesome!
A2: Teachers are seeing technology as a separate subject rather than a tool to teach a subject area.
Google Slides - build them a template to fill in - add images - etc. Learn those skills in baby steps!
This is huge. Many primary Ts like their "control" of classroom. Unfamiliar tech feels scary.
your doing great Susan!! Ligtning fast fingers
I’m all about that, man. Big ups to the
Some Ts think the Ss are the same. Some Admin also fail to think tech is important especially in the K-3 range.
Agreed. As Coaches we can be there in class to support those teachers. Start small. Work up from there.
A2: My coaching improved once I realized that "I don't have time for that" is a valuable data point
Join us. Q3 on is about ELA & GAFE.
had some amazing summer pd for her teachers
Its not just SAMR is SAMR in connection with DOK, You can do R activities that just reach level 1. Combine the two.
I did too.We kept a tally table of how many times I screwed up.Kids loved it and it modeled failure.
it's handy to have minions around to test things out on!!! mwahahaha
And the new ISTE Standards are so broad appropriate for any grade, any content area!
It's often seen as something else to eat away at their precious minutes! https://t.co/XGDAM5lzA7
A2: Teachers are seeing technology as a separate subject rather than a tool to teach a subject area.
A2 If they could just C & feel the kids having so much fun while learning with tech, they would change. Tech is a catalyst
YUP! My almost 5 year old plays Minecraft & is totally learning AMAZING things from it! Screentime shmeentime
but S is good when it is whats best for the learning. There is a time for each part of SAMR
Never took a tally, I should!
Same with my 4 and 9 year old- teach me stuff all the time!
A3 Collaborative story writing via is a fantastic activity for early literacy!
I won't argue with you there, totally agree if R isnt instructionally sound, don't due it
Do you think it's a class mngmt thing? Like if primary kids get out of control it's hard to bring them back?
That’s it! Ari & I have had lots of convos about that. Not a ladder but a swimming pool. Move fluidly
A2: The incorrect belief that age is a factor in learning technology. Those little ones are just as capable as the older ones!
A3 google is a four letter word in my district, I defer to the wisdom of others on this one!
A3: Who uses read&write?? Love it!
A3: Talk to type. Early writing. Google Draw.
A3: Support speaking/listening when little learners record their own reading using Slides and Screencastify.
I am in complete agreement on that model.
Yes..Super team here to advocate!
A3: Speech to text add-ons in Docs can help students with punctuation, grammar, etc.
As long as they are talking about the skills Ss and Ts are developing and avoiding solving the "problem" with tech
Just used those graphics in PD last week. "Substitution is the Gateway Drug," said
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check out Google Draw and see if I'm ready to give K-2 students a go at it.
YES! Objective is reaching Ss. If goal is to get to R & it’s not reaching Ss, then it’s not effective
So do you think the littles should start w/ tech right away to make it a habit or wait until procedures are solid?
It is CRAZY! He was showing me how to run electricity and use pressure plates and levers. Ahhhhh
Draw is one of my faves, too! SO much room for creativity!
Fo Sho. Show them and they will come along. Make them have fun! Everyone like to smile/learn, dont they? https://t.co/KSkqFruzIz
really see it as a curriic thing. Prim. Ts know how impt. it is to give basic skills + social dev. show how these wrk w/tech
A3 Google drawing is another awesome tool for early literacy. Many kids who hate writing stories, LOVE illustrating stories.
A2: Our lower El Ts don't use tech b/c of access to computers, tablets, etc. Upper El has carts & devices. 5th G has 1:1 laptops.
Collaborative slides, you can put text boxes, to label images.
Teachers don't fear technology. They fear leaving their Comfort zone and doing something that might lead to failure.
Google docs are great for collaborative writing. I have a student group that has a story over hundred pages
A3: Voice typing tools like in GDocs or iPad can help the very littles learn that spoken word=written word.
??? https://t.co/uaXRhted2s
A3 google is a four letter word in my district, I defer to the wisdom of others on this one!
& the thing is you have placed a value on it...I've seen Ts and Ps dismiss what they're Ss learn on-screen
A2:Think some primary Ts nervous about own skill lvl ¬ being able 2support Ss w/tech so just don't use https://t.co/arez4YZvmW
made a shirt for that too. I think bought one
You bring up an important point: drawing is its own form of storytelling!
Thanks for the suggestion on using Google Slides with K-2 students in the computer lab. I'll check it out.
A3. By making content accessible
I think that there is an unknown with lower grades (RISK). Ts integrating at primary are innovators and courageous.
A3: screencasting Ss reading books, retelling a story using pics in slides, use Draw to draw then describe parts of story
agree and.. the chaos of students being in different places at the same time
i think some Ts don't know where to start. Some Can't imagine giving up control to Ss bc they're little
Very true. And we play WITH him & learn from him as he plays.
A3: In ELA, Google Slides /Classroom to create Readers notebooks that are interactive and easy to view.
A3: Slides to collaborate, add images and text boxes, also 5 slides to do a 5 finger retell
Great for EL students https://t.co/7FYD9J4t8b
A3: Speech to text add-ons in Docs can help students with punctuation, grammar, etc.
That sums it up, Amanda. Fear of the tech unknown. So they don't go there. (bc it doesn't feel required)
has all sorts of mind maps and whatnot that are great for literacy as well
Hey I love this idea!! https://t.co/97sftPTdza
A3: screencasting Ss reading books, retelling a story using pics in slides, use Draw to draw then describe parts of story
A3: Support early writing-s's take a picture, label it, then compose a sentence or two about their pic. Can record their story.
i think more so. No bad tech habits and littles aren't afraid of exploring!
I love this idea! I hope to try it this year.
I’ve got a short go to lesson I do with second grades (could be done for 1st too) if you are interested in hearing more.
That’s a real concern w Ts I’ve worked with. Let’s build our growth mindset as adults!
A3: Simply using the Google Classroom/Docs integration for editing writing assignments and making comments. Saves time for Ts
Agreed. Teacher Q: What can I do with Google Classroom? Me A: Anything!!! Need a shift in mindset
I used it extensively with my autistic students
SUCH a good point, Joanne!
Yep, I think so. I need me one of those!
But I do think that challenging Ts to move to R leads to more activities that engage Ss and Inc learning.
Love it. Great way to use screencasts
A3: Readability can be helpful in identifying appropriate reading level texts
A3: Even 1st graders can create book reports on google slides. Believe they can & they will! https://t.co/7EIRav8LS4
we do the last one in MS, why not in Kinder too?
A3: word sort, letter sort, sequencing, storytelling, discussions - Really what can't you do. Big fan
A3a: When I taught K I used mostyl iPads, there are great apps to support ELA! Chatterpix, skitch, explain everything!
As says, “Education is like a rubber band. When you feel the tension, you know it’s working.”
Great place to start! https://t.co/XuZfyzxWH1
A3: Simply using the Google Classroom/Docs integration for editing writing assignments and making comments. Saves time for Ts
Everyone wants 1:1 but you can do so much with a handful... Small group, collaborative research/projects https://t.co/No2tgntSG2
A2: Our lower El Ts don't use tech b/c of access to computers, tablets, etc. Upper El has carts & devices. 5th G has 1:1 laptops.
Modeling is my favorite! Spent most of last yr in K2 showing Ts what they& Ss are capable of!
I see Ts take sigh of relief w swimming analogy. "Okay, phew! I can start small:
I've always said SAMR is not a ladder. It's more like a menu. Use paper/pen if it makes sense!
Yes, of course. Let’s aim to use all levels AND be purposeful & effective at each level
A3b: Now that we are 1:1 Chromebooks I am looking for more Apps/Ext's to use! Screencastify being one
Is it a fear of Google as a stealer of information or are you just a Microsoft shop for all things tech? https://t.co/UugTnUoD2v
A3 google is a four letter word in my district, I defer to the wisdom of others on this one!
i think some Ts are honestly scared they'll break their tech & then have nothing. I've heard some say this!
I. Love. Doing. This. Kids love it 2 especially the younger ones who can't get enough of their own voices https://t.co/VAaCsMT66i
A3: screencasting Ss reading books, retelling a story using pics in slides, use Draw to draw then describe parts of story
Do your districts have/use scope and sequence for tech?
Yes. It’s definitely freeing to know the levels are fluid.
A MENU. That’s a good one.
I agree, but I think it is also the riskiest integration because of the lack of evidence.
Yeah, I heard about that. Met Amy at It's unfortunate for the students.
YES! DRAW ALL THE THINGS!
A3 Ss, especially the small ones, love to touch things, push buttons and see change. That's why I love Google forms for all ages
Tech in MS and HS is a norm now. Innovative in Kinder, 1, and 2.
I can see that, I like the swim laps idea instead of treading water
Absolutely! Took this job on Friday, in orientation now and starting this Thursday. Any help is appreciated!
Encourage them to take that dive huh Joe...haha
Head first!
Build it and they will come.
aren't they awesome! I am inspired to update mine now!
This doesn’t have to be an either/or situation. ;-) They can fear both.
A3: Can I get a Whoo Hoo! Can't agree more! It really helps Ts w/ the management piece too! https://t.co/jplDYVQ2dS
yep. i try to show Ts how much FUN Ss can have LEARNING to show them it's good.
When I say sometimes you need to get out of the pool it's like mind blown
Yes. Keep moving. Staying at same shallow or deep end is boring & tiring
We do. Would be happy to share some screenshots.
"What can't you do?" I love that! So true. https://t.co/KRJ5wQeglS
A3: word sort, letter sort, sequencing, storytelling, discussions - Really what can't you do. Big fan
It's a great mind shift! The ladder mentality makes it feel like a competition
that's the secret sauce right there.
Cuz I know Ts who were sure that was up to something nefarious with …just 110% sure. :-D
Ya! so what the excuse...are the little one Ts too nurturing?
Text to speech also helps ELL with pronunciation. They can see if the computer understands them. https://t.co/ER9jr9AfA3
A3: Speech to text add-ons in Docs can help students with punctuation, grammar, etc.
Yes! Always important to do that too. Be mindful of all you do & need
I meant voice typing. https://t.co/On0aCxgV22
Text to speech also helps ELL with pronunciation. They can see if the computer understands them. https://t.co/ER9jr9AfA3
A3: Speech to text add-ons in Docs can help students with punctuation, grammar, etc.
omg I'm using idea! ty for sharing! https://t.co/CycGR2BjuY
A3: Support early writing-s's take a picture, label it, then compose a sentence or two about their pic. Can record their story.
Seriously. Good for Ts to hear from the tech folks!
A4: I love and their draw questions function for Ss to show their work, has that function too
Q4 is about math & GAFE. Join us on
A4: Of course Google Draw is great for geometry. loves Draw
A3 Cont'd GForms can be used to assess students or give them an interactive expereince by adding pictures, videos and support text
I have even heard say it was a swimming pool.
Is this from an Ed Tech (Director/Coordinator) or other Admin? Sounds like you EdTech is old school. https://t.co/TZlEd2OhNh
the exact phrase was "why would we do something for free when we can pay for it and have built in support"
Absolutely, can really help build skills and confidence
Putting on my to do for tmrw!
reinforces what our goal is. S learning, not tech teaching.
Yes! It's certainly the makings of one!
That’s right. Not a competition of who gets to top first. Or who starts on top
A4b: First graders practice Tens and Ones: gSlides with embedded youtube videos and digital manipulatives https://t.co/r0xRiLjk04
A4: Students can draw number concepts or manipulate dotcards They can create simple bar graphs.
I think control issues expand the whole spectrum of K-12 spectrum
A4: We have used Slides for Drag and Drop Activities with ten frames & number sense
And it vault you past S onto A with minimal effort. Look how smart you are!
A3: Blended learning: individualized work, targeted data based instruction w/T interactive nearpod lesson. https://t.co/U2m3fFYvBs
I love the ability to use the perimeter in draw and slides. https://t.co/ZrO7kh1JEa
Draw is one of my faves, too! SO much room for creativity!
Exactly. Not tech for tech's sake. What is lrng goal? Does that tool amplify lrng?
Yes! Encourage the move from Ss as consumers to Ss as creators! Both with tech and without!
A4: I've used Google Drawings to make base ten blocks that are both manipulative and collaborative
& it doesnt help u become a better swimmer, + u have varied techniques 2go back & forth
Important for us to model that for our colleagues
I hate the way most SAMR graphics are made & 'above the line" ugh, not purposeful
Yes! Happy day for me when I realized that was usable space.
Jon! We have a show topic...
It’s def a great new perspective on SAMR
A4: images in forms, link to a reteach video or lesson if Ss get wrong answer, screencast as they move manipulatives in Draw
+ some tasks = meant for Subs/Aug. No need to deepen DOK if task doesn't warrant.
A4:Use Drawings/Slides for math modeling, have Ss take pics of numbers in world&create posters/mind maps https://t.co/RlIFO8vl23
Totally! "menu" invites us to focus on learning, decide on appropriate S,A,M or R
Yes! Creators! Let them make content from which others can learn!
A4: Google Draw. Ss are able to justify their solutions using words, numbers, and models!
Not supposed to retweet your own tweet... unless its' that cool!
A4: use sheets to create 100 chart and then color cells for patterns
Padlet may rise to the top of my fav. tool of all time list!
Thats ...Draw, slides and story telling...I have them insert images to help narrate the story
Well said. Always depends on objective of lesson
tech changes so rapidly competition is unrealistic
wish they would change that from transforming to . Thats what is required.
Its definitely has for me. :)
Wow! That's a regular smorgasbord of goodness!
A4: (&3) putting images in google forms opens up a WHOLE new world of possibilities for our youngest stds.
So sorry to hear that. It is a task to educate the highly educated about something they are a novice at. https://t.co/3mbLF9MDPD
It's my own personal Twitter rule... but again, if it's amazing, it's exempt!
A4: Nothing like the hands on activities for students for number recognition with whatever app it is.
A4 are fun to use in math to learn about distance & measurement. Google has some silly nonstandard units of measure.
Sheets aren't scary! Let the litte ones learn to love them in all of their nerdy beauty! https://t.co/uU5l0qSUd8
A4: use sheets to create 100 chart and then color cells for patterns
I want to be just like Karly when I grow up :)
There is even those that fear the sand.
A4: Number Bond Practice via Google Draw with Screencastify for explanation
That just sounds like fun!
YES!!! All the Google drawings!!! My go to tool when introducing to littles.
Competition is good in context - not in the SAMR context
love idea of duplicating tons of 10s and 1s and putting them in a pile on the edge of slide. https://t.co/5dtC8pYhGn
A4: I've used Google Drawings to make base ten blocks that are both manipulative and collaborative
A colleague did a project last year involving MyMaps, vectors, angles, and college visits, it was awesome!
A4 GSlides as dot cards for subitizing, matching w numeral/word. Drag/match # of objects to numerals. https://t.co/rboPViEr2U
A4 Google drawings is perfect for a geometry unit!
Haven't tried it yet...but next week I'll be in a K class...so I'll post how it goes!
if they can't get one the beach maybe they shouldnt be teaching
A4: Draw is a great and underused tool for littles. Lots of applications for math. Use digital shapes as manipulatives.
Guess I know what I'll be doing tomorrow :)
And little ones are fascinated by maps, too! https://t.co/MD2xb2Kvaq
A4 are fun to use in math to learn about distance & measurement. Google has some silly nonstandard units of measure.
Me too! We will set these goals haha! Maybe it should be to not be so busy?
R = exposure / stretching. Once the R is common prac, it becomes S-like anyway
it's definitely one of our fave tools. After gafe!
A4 I've used Google drawings when teaching kids how to tell time. They have to draw & label a clock.
A4: Sheets for graphs, drawing for Geometry, slides for acting out word pblms, number sense in screencastify
Have to get approval to come first. Fingers crossed!
A4 b) Docs/Slides/Draw: Ss take pic of manips. Insert numbers to label. Go on shape hunt. Insert pics into Slides.
A4 My love of Gforms is really coming out here but using the dropdown or data validation as questions can support NS & Numeration
A4: slides with pictures of multiple ways to show a number
hopefully I remember, maybe like tapas style
A4: Google Slides and Google Draw seem like natural tools.
I think cameras are being underutilized. Great way for ss to connect learning to their world. https://t.co/HNj71lOX0D
A4:Use Drawings/Slides for math modeling, have Ss take pics of numbers in world&create posters/mind maps https://t.co/RlIFO8vl23
This sounds like fun! Let them CREATE!
Interesting take. That’s one for me to ponder on a bit.
Have to head out early tonight....Great talking to you all!
A4b: Open ended math sorts are great, too, in Drawings... and more fun when they are collaborative https://t.co/HNCYMgcfTE
agreed! There is so much you can do with a camera!
I will have to try and make it. Need to meet Kelly f2f
it was 10th & 11th, they had to plan a trip to a college and how they would walk the campus to see things
A4: Even can be used to build a digital portfolio and record S math thinking
Loved this post, Ari! Great points + well written
Huge mind shift for Ts. Its about creating authentic S work. Consuming is expensive wksheets.
Ooo...I like this! https://t.co/hzdCMHemBu
A4 My love of Gforms is really coming out here but using the dropdown or data validation as questions can support NS & Numeration
Share your message. No shame in that.
How have you used that feature?
Yes I have, almost takes the fun out of actually going though
A4 Don’t forget all the really great Google Drawing templates out there for math! Many are for older kids, but you can adjust.
you could go with this, or you could go with that, you could go with this ...
Yes! That is what I am talking about! Cheers! Adding pics changes everything and such easy thing to do! https://t.co/yRD4DbFrkV
A4: (&3) putting images in google forms opens up a WHOLE new world of possibilities for our youngest stds.
omg yes maps! My 7 yo loves maps and globes. He would love it if his T did a maps lesson! On my to do list now. :)
Love me a Google Map. Still learning but can see the possibilities.
Worksheets are expensive in so many ways. money, time... what a waste! https://t.co/96ae3LMmkR
Huge mind shift for Ts. Its about creating authentic S work. Consuming is expensive wksheets.
content and context always come first, then layer in pedagogy ending w/tech
A5: Basic tools such as Docs, Sheets, etc., with a slow roll into
I've played around with it- super easy and a great tool for parents to see S work.
Well said. And we have the privilege & pleasure of doing so
I disagree. Redefined is transform a paper activity, not having uncommon lessons.
it's only been a year...haha. Joe you have to come!
A5: Google forms is the gateway app for all things GAFE IMHO
Its the best for little tech users! So much more than just a portfolio.
Kendra! It's not sliced bread but darn it, its pretty close! https://t.co/JwEiX9x1KU
and you must love it so much more now with images as options for littles.
A5: Either Slides or Draw. Teach them to make a template, share with Ss for manipulation. Then, let Ss do the creating.
yes! Mindset is more important than a line! (for so many things)
A5: Draw! Going into a first grade class tomorrow! Had an idea to start, but may let them explore? Ideas?
A4 Smash and for voice recording to share S thinking! Form assess for T; great sharing w Ps.
The best tool out there!!!!
TPACK as a planning tool and SAMR as a reflecting tool.
Absolutely! Especially for those kids getting offers from numerous schools
A5: Google slides is my vote but i would defer to as an expert on this one!
i will share it with his T. once I officially meet her.
hi Michaela!!!!! So glad that you found So many Amazing educators here!!!
A5: I'm going to say slides. Set it up to be collaborative, but S take/insert pics, video, text, etc.
A5: Start with Google Classroom first! It helps create a home base for the kiddos. After that, I’m a huge fan of Google Drawings!
I make a Google Slides template and let them learn to add images, text, into my half edited slides.
Have a good for that? If not, we must make one.
I defer to the expert! THis is my answer too! https://t.co/2LH1i5OG3N
A5: Start with Google Classroom first! It helps create a home base for the kiddos. After that, I’m a huge fan of Google Drawings!
Think there needs to be synergy with them. Not a linear design.
A5: Like starting littles w/Google Drawings... it's fun to play in GDraw the first time lrning to log in https://t.co/EoerAn18xI
I will check it out! And that's okay. There will always be new innovations that we pick and choose from! https://t.co/JQWsyutp7o
Thank you! I ran out of room!
idk I always imagine R more as REACH to audience, other subjects, etc.
A5: Google Draw 1. draw shape, 2. manipulate shape 3. move/delete shape 4. color shape 5. make pic So many embedded tech skills
A5: I agree w on Google Slides. So accessible at any level of readiness. Let them play and they create greatness!
TPACK is still something for me to uncover more of
A5: I find that Ts new to gafe appreciate classroom and forms the most. Definitely need support beginning though
To get started, give them design basics about shape and line and color!
Yup! I’ll email you. I tend to create something that has something to do with what they’ve been learning content wise
I like this idea! Many our littles have iPads so haven't tried yet!
That's good! Since I just scheduled GC training! Can't wait to see it in action in classrooms!
Even better now that images can be added to response choices!!
Can't wait to explore your site!
Sheets create powerful visuals--graphs! Allows Ss to SEE the data they (or others) collect.
A5: I'm inclined to go with Slides on this one. Great for novice Ts and little Ss.
A5: Slides are my favorite, but forms would be any easy first interaction. Love draw but not available on iPads
I was pretty excited about that, I'll be honest.
Looking forward to snow. I miss snowboarding. A Tahoe trip this winter? How about it
A4 Would love to start using GSlides or Drawings for visuals in primary!
A4 Here's an engaging math lesson I did using Google sheets to teach about money & data analytics. https://t.co/XoXFOjo7vO
A4 Here's an engaging math lesson I did using Google sheets to teach about money & data analytics. https://t.co/v997O7ujUh
Yeah, Susan is a ROCK STAR!
Great ideas here! https://t.co/sPYglGzYft
A5: Google Draw 1. draw shape, 2. manipulate shape 3. move/delete shape 4. color shape 5. make pic So many embedded tech skills
If I know I'll be able to come back later to demo subject-integration, I prefer to do day 1 just playing in Drawings
Thank you! Will do, I'll let you know how it goes!
Teach the tech skills and DESIGN skills, because Design Matters, right https://t.co/xJ1WpRDoSl
A5: Google Draw 1. draw shape, 2. manipulate shape 3. move/delete shape 4. color shape 5. make pic So many embedded tech skills
seriously, your stuff is awesome.
Yes! Let’s make it happen
Love it. Do you get parental consent for the <13 age restric of Screencastify? In this example I'd prob use
A5: Google Draw! No need for instruction. The kids will figure out and they can teach each other!
A5: classroom and draw followed with slides. Creating books in slides is a game changer for many Ts
Yes! I teach ss to create backgrounds and use shapes to draw. Makes them look at world in terms of shape.
drinks with tiny umbrellas?
Amazing! Adding it to my to-do with K Ts in classrooms this year!
And let students help generate that data! They are so much more invested when the data is about them! https://t.co/Xxkog2nkyj
Sheets create powerful visuals--graphs! Allows Ss to SEE the data they (or others) collect.
I'm still advocating for a Santa Maria barbecue get together.
while sitting under a giant umbrella?
SUCH a bummer. Luckily many similar tools in Slides!
HA HA HA I'm in! Bring all the kids! It would be so fun!
Agreed. Google Classroom b/f all else. https://t.co/AuVRK1N6Sd
A5: Start with Google Classroom first! It helps create a home base for the kiddos. After that, I’m a huge fan of Google Drawings!
another good perspective on R. As tech grows we redefine the spectrum
another good perspective on R. As tech grows we redefine the spectrum
came out of Let me know if you want some resources.
Absolutely! Talk about owning their learning... powerful stuff!
A5 An easy, engaging & fun tool for primary teachers is Google slides. Endless possibilities and kids LOVE them!
A5: Google Hangout with a expert in an area of study. Such as a zookeeper or something that creates a virtual field trip.
Something we MUST do too - for the sake of the students
We use for K-2 on iPad. Our 3-6 use screencastify cause different device. We have a SAUP parents sign
Make sure that happens soon, Google Hangouts is going by the wayside
I need to get on that. I preach this in every PD I do.
I'm am far from an expert, but thanks for reminding me that I forgot about !
I think that needs a meme https://t.co/4cZWoQ3BmR
Agreed. Google Classroom b/f all else. https://t.co/AuVRK1N6Sd
A5: Start with Google Classroom first! It helps create a home base for the kiddos. After that, I’m a huge fan of Google Drawings!
. He thought up that concept 4 years ago. Others try to take credit
Thanks Karly! New post going up in the A.M. abt Digital Listening Centers and response activities in K-2! https://t.co/mFy84It7Qh
I get that. More like an atom with all the parts in sync together
I agree. I always use TPACK, but get into SAMR later to celebrate and challenge Ts who have started to integrate.
Had a 5th Grade T use the magazine template idea in Slides. Class made travel magazine for 50 states. https://t.co/nJGE72DaoZ
Thinking of you as my 4th grader has a late night HW meltdown.
Can't wait to read it! =)
Me too. Adding to my To Do. Let's see what we can come up with!
for sure!! this year we are trying to get more k-2 using consistently
You'll have to catch it on YouTube
I don't blog often, but when I do I attempt to make it a good one.
It is unfortunate, I use GHO for all sorts of meetings with colleagues
A6: Here's a group of firsties that logged into their Chromebooks for the first time last week! https://t.co/IEnxTvDaqT
Yes, a great lesson has content that works with pedagogy and tech.
Yes! Take your students beyond the 4 walls of a classroom!!! https://t.co/cy89r8FNGd
A5: Google Hangout with a expert in an area of study. Such as a zookeeper or something that creates a virtual field trip.
As long as there is plenty of ale and SPF 70, I'm down
thanks Jessica! I finally decided to jump in this week. Fast paced but learning a lot!
A5: I would also day Slides is the way to go. Easy way to get started, for Ts and Ss. So many collaboration opportunities
Have you ever looked into activity theory? Like TPACK on crack.
This takes my 13 colonies slides made w/ 8th graders to the next level! Awesome!
Yet another gem from Ryan!
I need to practice drawing more so I can make these visuals!
A6: Using a green screen to showcase an exotic place in the world while teaching their peers
Mr. get my vote...I don't even care what we're voting on. He wins.
no, but I'd love to. Send papers my way.
Hey - when did you get here? Am I that far behind?
A6: Log in! Take the little win.
We're keeping track of miles in PE and visiting the destinations online... Hope to connect with classes https://t.co/OoNEv3iTwn
Yes! Take your students beyond the 4 walls of a classroom!!! https://t.co/cy89r8FNGd
A5: Google Hangout with a expert in an area of study. Such as a zookeeper or something that creates a virtual field trip.
no she just got here!! ;)
Anyone else on TweetDeck almost use instead of because you're typing too fast?
I struggled with Q6, the last time I REALLY worked with K-2 Ts was when I was a K-2 student
Awesome. Love that smile. is the queen of Green Screen for me.
Most recently I taught 4th. My heart breaks for your kiddo. Not how I EVER wanted my Ss spending their time!
A6: One of my favorite days last year...the pride on these kinders' faces when they learned to code. :) https://t.co/6zc6MyxuOz
It's tough getting back into the swing of Monday night. Totally spaced on But I was working. Is that an excuse?
Haven’t got that yet, but I do get instead of sometimes.
I think that depends on the learning goal. Agree unlikely, but possible.
I keep typing then having to erase, so you're not the only one
True Ben. However, if lesson doesn’t require R & teacher is just forcing R = ineffective
Thanks, Ben. We have one tech umbrella AUA, but then have to ask for consent on <13 items.
We forgive you Jody! Just glad you could make it =)
A6: All this talk of has me thinking of 2nd grade Ss writing stories, then recording. It rocked!
Nice. Quality over quantity. I'm slowly getting up the nerve to start!
It's not going by the wayside for EDU & WORK domains, if I read the article correctly. I need to check
The K classes I supported w coding absolutely love on the iPads
Just to make you jealous, I bought a site based license of for my staff today
Absolutely! Loved working with Kinders on animations last yr. Used code to create shapes stories https://t.co/zP8lBgylvd
no, I'm a total slacker today and only jumped in to sing along with 🎤
I hope you're right, not really a fan of shifting to YouTube Live, but then again, gotta roll with the tides
Thank you for another fabulous chat! Have a great week everyone!
you must be working hard professoring. yep made that word up.
you know how I like to sing
Thanks for joining us and sharing!
Thanks Always a pleasure! Feeling re-inspired for the new school year!
My son is in TK this year. He has an AMAZING teacher who loves tech & STEM. My kiddo & I are in heaven =)
omg i love this idea! I'm really going to push my fave 5th gr T to ditch what she's always done.
lesson that is not possible without tech, but was it the Ss doing the work and learning? or T
I look forward to sharing and learning through another awesome year, Amanda! You inspire me! https://t.co/s5g7DOq0pD
Thanks Always a pleasure! Feeling re-inspired for the new school year!
Seesaw is amazing!!! Going to save GAFE as pdf and add to w voice annotations this yr
Thanks for a great chat. loved the primary tech topic.
I'm professoring all over the place! Lol. Kinda like adulting.
Thanks, ! Bummed to miss chat tonight. I'm filming stuff for a flipped PD Challenge & missing !
