    First Question! #ctetlchat
  • JeremyDBond Mar 8 @ 8:08 PM EST
Parent from West Hartford here. A1) We need to define what we mean by "screen time" when it comes to limits. Soon we'll see much more of the world through screens. The question is whether it's an enriching or harmful experience. #ctetlchat
  • parkcy08 Mar 8 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1: I think that when setting limits on screen time, teachers and parents need to be mindful and considerate of setting boundaries on what websites/apps etc. are being used during those screen times! #ctetlchat
  • robertdmiller Mar 8 @ 8:11 PM EST
#ctetlchat This is Rob Miller, Director of Technology for Ridgefield Public Schools. Sorry i was late but looking forward to a good discussion.

    Let's jump into question 2! #ctetlchat
  • robertdmiller Mar 8 @ 8:12 PM EST
#ctetlchat Jeremy, I agree. It does depend on what you are doing - is it constructive, learning, creative, or passive watching something.
  • robertdmiller Mar 8 @ 8:13 PM EST
#ctetlchat I think part of the problem is that we, as educators, see screen time though both a positive and a negative lens. Many parents see only the negative.
  • abbewaldron Mar 8 @ 8:14 PM EST
Q2: Intentional planning with technology is essential. #ctetlchat
  • CTETLeaders - Moderator Mar 8 @ 8:17 PM EST

    • ljbh35 Mar 8 @ 8:14 PM EST
I agree that defining screen time is key. At school, what is the purpose and what is being viewed.
  • JeremyDBond Mar 8 @ 8:17 PM EST
Some things obviously don't "count," like FaceTiming with Grandma. But as soon as we make distinctions it's worth exploring the value in anything they're doing. #ctetlchat

I think focusing on creating v. consuming is an important distinction as well #ctetlchat
  • parkcy08 Mar 8 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2: To set a couple of specific tasks that students can choose to work on. Then there is a clear purpose, direction and intent in the process/work. #ctetlchat
  • CTETLeaders - Moderator Mar 8 @ 8:19 PM EST
Time is flying! Question 3 is up! #ctetlchat
  • robertdmiller Mar 8 @ 8:20 PM EST
#ctetlchat The same can be said for use of social network tools. I have seen Facebook and Twitter be used as powerful learning tools by students. Any tool can be used in the positive way. It is how it is integrated and used.
  • JeremyDBond Mar 8 @ 8:21 PM EST
A3) As a parent, I put a lot of value in communication and understanding why something's being used or learned. So do a lot of sharing online; show the results. #ctetlchat
  • CTETLeaders - Moderator Mar 8 @ 8:22 PM EST
    Communication is key! #ctetlchat
  • JeremyDBond Mar 8 @ 8:23 PM EST
Social media is still dissed by many adults as unproductive time for kids. So work with it! #ctetlchat

  • parkcy08 Mar 8 @ 8:23 PM EST
A3: I believe that there is meaning behind everything that is done in the classroom. As the teacher, having a clear idea of what you want the students to learn/get out of the activity is crucial. With this, this can be talked about with parents #ctetlchat
  • abbewaldron Mar 8 @ 8:23 PM EST
Q3: This is why it is so important to keep communication open. It's also really important to get feedback from families too. #ctetlchat
  • ljbh35 Mar 8 @ 8:24 PM EST
Communication with parents, transparency. Parents and Ss need to understand the purpose of the screen time. #ctetlchat
  • CTETLeaders - Moderator Mar 8 @ 8:26 PM EST
Last question of the night! #ctetlchat
  • parkcy08 Mar 8 @ 8:26 PM EST
I agree that by having a progressive and open communication platform with parents, both parties can learn from one another and see from different perspectives. An opportunity to consider different views #ctetlchat
  • ljbh35 Mar 8 @ 8:28 PM EST
Should be done continuously, especially as new tech is used. Sharing S work and showcasing it in a digital open house. Websites and teacher communications. #ctetlchat
