Thank you so much for joining #g2great tonight. We are so excited to be joined by guest host Tom Newkirk. Letās talk about a subject that has always been taboo: EMBARRASSMENT. Welcome to all & TY for being here Tom!
Hi #g2great! This is my first chat with this community but I am a former student of @Tom_Newkirk so wanted to peep in and learn. Haven't read this book yet.
A5: Relationships, RELATIONSHIPS, RELATIONSHIPS!!!! Yes, I repeated myself... BUILD THEM by getting to know your students... SAY their name EVERY DAY!!!! #MasteryChat#g2great
A1 Fear of āembarrassmentā cannot be allowed to be an excuse to not be open to change, to be vulnerable, or to be willing to take a risk. True learning means growth & uncertainty.
@tom_newkirk#G2Great@heinemannpub
A1: Embarrassment leads to walls being built for protection. These walls are the enemy of vulnerability, a key ingredient for growth. Quite often it takes years, many hammers & some amazing people to help tear them down. TY @suzrolander@DrMaryHoward@pranikoff#G2Great
Hello #g2great! Not a teacher but love seeing what you all think about @Tom_Newkirk's book...I am a big fan (and I am not just saying that because he is my dad)!
A1 Our perceptions can dramatically alter how we see things. When our fear of embarrassment clouds our lens, itās hard to glean anything positive from those experiences. #G2Great
Hi šš¼ EVERYONE!! Cameron Carter from Columbus, OH! Second grade teacher and @ncte Elementary Lead Ambassador! #g2great PUMPED to connect with all of YOU! Let's get this CHAT STARTED!!!!!!! šš

Abigail...you should be VERY proud! I've read everything you're dad has written (his work has been a big influence on me) and I think this is one of his best! #G2Great
Hello #g2great! Not a teacher but love seeing what you all think about @Tom_Newkirk's book...I am a big fan (and I am not just saying that because he is my dad)!
A1 Reflection is a powerful tool if our experiences become a springboard to understanding. Regardless of what transpired at the time, reflection allows us to see it through new eyes. #G2Great
A1: Fear of embarrassment causes anxiety and self-doubt which leads to missing out on opportunities and growth. We only grow when we step out of our comfort zones. #g2great
#G2Great Hi all, Matt from Ann Arbor here. So excited to be on a chat with @Tom_Newkirk I've loved Slow Reading, Minds Made for Stories, and especially Embarrassment!
Hello #g2great! Not a teacher but love seeing what you all think about @Tom_Newkirk's book...I am a big fan (and I am not just saying that because he is my dad)!
It never ceases to amazing me how joyful teachers are about their own learning. Think about it - how often do you see people showing up a Thursday night to learn? Love it! #G2Great
A1 Embarrassment is the twin of humiliation. It replays in students minds again and againāhaunts them & stops learning. Notice& nurture what worksāno matter how small! Help students reduce negative voices by reflecting on their progress & changing inner voices. #g2great
You're with the #G2Great fam...it's all good!
PS..I was going back and forth in a the quickness of the chat between writing "You're among or amongst..." #vulnerability
A1 We should never be embarrassed. If we are truly learners and adopt that mindset, we need to see our opportunities/challenges are times to reflect/learn. We need to create a safe space to feel confident in our process of learning. #g2great
A1 I find that Ts who care most about their teaching tend to be hardest on themselves when it doesnāt go well. If we take a step back & accept that we are human all we do becomes a growth opportunity. #G2Great
A2 Too often the learning process is made to look easy and perfect so struggle, difficulties & embarrassment are not included. Ss & Ts may believe this false narrative. Struggle is real & hard.
@tom_newkirk#G2Great@heinemannpub
Susie here from NYC, sitting in a cafe with @pranikoff feeling the glow of our first class of the semester @bankstreetedu So excited to be with my #G2Great family.
A1: The internal feelings of childhood & adulthood Embarrassment have never really left me. The feeling sticks to your gut & itās easy to carry once youāve experienced it. You can learn how to manage it,cope with it and hide it by taking risks & breaking down walls. #G2Great
Remember when it was hard in college on Thursday nights to decide which party to go to?! Fast forward 2 decades and I feel the same about simultaneous chats #G2Great#masterychat#collaborativePD
Q1 Tome states "embarrassment is not only a true enemy of learning, but of so many other actions we could take to better ourselves" Reflect on these words #g2great
A2 Social media can impact our view because we tend to see only 280 BITS OF BEST. We never get to see what it took to get there and what didnāt go so well along the way. This can feed our perfection perception. #G2Great
@DrMaryHoward#G2Great Itās so good to hear you say that Mary. I worry all the time that Iām not doing enough and I try but thereās always that bit more that I feel I need to do.
A1 I find that Ts who care most about their teaching tend to be hardest on themselves when it doesnāt go well. If we take a step back & accept that we are human all we do becomes a growth opportunity. #G2Great
Q1 Tom states "embarrassment is not only a true enemy of learning, but of so many other actions we could take to better ourselves" Reflect on these words #g2great
A1: I think the fear of embarrassment is the real issue. I get embarrassed all the time. I am not scared to mess up so it is not really a barrier for me. I can see how it can be for others though #G2Great
A2 Too often the learning process is made to look easy and perfect so struggle, difficulties & embarrassment are not included. Ss & Ts may believe this false narrative. Struggle is real & hard.
@tom_newkirk#G2Great@heinemannpub
We always try to show our shining light but I find reflecting in blogs and being honest with ourselves & others in the end helps not only us but our students #g2great
A2 If we are always striving to be perfect, we are not learning. We are focusing on perpetuating a false image. We need to focus on helping everyone learn, develop at their pace, feel confident and feel safe. They must feel cared for to take risks...always. #g2great
The older I get, the less embarrassed I get. I think it's because I'm able to laugh at my mistakes now. When I was younger, I tried to hide from them. #G2Great
A1: Tom's notion that everything we do is a performance and that we are our own harshest critic stuck with me. Combine those too, and you get the answer for why so many people struggle with so many things. #g2great
A2: The false narrative that expert teachers do not mess up is such a daunting thing to live up to as a learner. I think we must always remember that people work so hard behind the scenes to come out polished. #G2Great
A2 One of the things I love most about this book is that for the first time it shines the spotlight on that āemotional underlife.ā If we could make this more a part of our discussions I think weād view those things differently. #G2Great
To achieve transferable learning, process needs to be transparent. That takes vulnerability, humility & tons to courage to be a learner in front of others, too. Living our lives in visible revision is freeing, in the end. Life's messy, why shouldn't learning be, too?! #G2Great A2
A1 Embarrassment can be the enemy of growth. If kids don't get that a classroom community is a safe place to discuss, take risks and think aloud with their school family, then they lose. Ts have to build and protect a safe place where failure is highly valued. #G2Great
Embarrassment comes from our automatic system and as such isn't something we can just wish away. We can, however, help ourselves reframe situations and our interpretations of them. I teach myself and my Ss to do this. #g2great
A2 I think as teachers we sometimes don't allow the space ourselves to also be learners. Not everything has to go according to plan- we can reflect and learn from the experience. That's how we grow. #G2Great
I think we all face that and I often have to click my Dorothy shoes together three times and repeat. "Iām fallible and thereās no place like being IMPERFECT!ā #G2Great
@DrMaryHoward#G2Great Itās so good to hear you say that Mary. I worry all the time that Iām not doing enough and I try but thereās always that bit more that I feel I need to do.

A1: There are ubiquitous moments in teaching where we HAVE to allow ourselves to say/embrace, "I don't know." But what we do after we utter this phrase is the difference between embarrassment and empowerment. The same is true of and for our students in the room, yes? #G2Great
A2 Iāve learned as much from my missteps (& Iāve had many) as I have my successes. If we had the courage to share these w/others, they could teach us a great deal about our practices from a human factor perspective. #G2Great
I always love this image, shared by @GeorgeCouros when discussing the process of learning! I think it embodies that imperfections are part of growth! #G2Great
#g2great Iāll never forget when at TC one time a staff person pointed out how messy it is to try new things and learn. Itās like a laboratory, the more learning, the messier.
A1: There are ubiquitous moments in teaching where we HAVE to allow ourselves to say/embrace, "I don't know." But what we do after we utter this phrase is the difference between embarrassment and empowerment. The same is true of and for our students in the room, yes? #G2Great
Student once told me she thought my life must be "perfect." Now make sure I share stories of burned dinner, spilled coffee, flat tires, horses getting out. Not oversharing, but they've got to know we live real lives. #g2great
A1: Fear of embarrassment often holds us back from taking risk or trying new things academically, socially, emotionally & personally. It's important to embrace the idea of feeling uncomfortable because after that discomfort comes growth. #g2great
A2: Strive for progress not perfection. Learners who create personal reading, writing, and thinking goals choose to progress. Choice enhances progress. #g2great
#G2Great
A1 I was an extemely shy kid. I missed out on so much learning and, frankly, joy in my youth. I see it with teens. Problem: egocentrism of teens means they think everyone sees every mis-step and mistake.
A1 Life is full of embarrassing situations-some laughable, some upsetting but it is how we move on that makes the difference. Love your thought - "True learning means growth & uncertainty. #G2Great
In reply to
@franmcveigh, @Tom_Newkirk, @HeinemannPub
A1: Embarrassment inhibits and causes us to keep ideas deep inside. Embarrassment in learning has caused many of us to doubt our abilities &associate learning with negativity. We grow when we press ourselves beyond that. Itās painful, but itās necessary. #g2great
A2. I see this sometimes when I research young children's writing. Some kids come to K already seeking perfection in their writing--and it stops them from taking risks. #G2Great
#G2Great A1 risk of embarrassment reminds me a bit of the Great Wizard of OZ, using a facade to appear more knowledgeable than perhaps we are to shelter us from the revelation that we are in fact in need of a lesson
A3 Ts & Admins model FAIL - First Attempt In Learning. Tell our stories. Write out stories. Be honest. Be real. Anchor our work in GROWTH and PROCESS. Fewer grades. MORE about the learning.
@tom_newkirk#G2Great@heinemannpub
A3: We have to overtly MODEL & EMBRACE failure OURSELVES every single day. Constantly taking risks, tinkering with things, exploring the unknown in front of our Ss. Then having the capacity to say, "YES! That didn't work yet! Here comes another iteration." #G2Great
Q3: what if we -as teachers - modeled and made light of our own failures and mistakes? So āsilly me, I canāt believe I wrote that wrongā shows that mistakes are okay #G2Great .@Tom_Newkirk
A2: Especially when the world they consume, social media and otherwise, is also airbrushed and perfect. How do we make opportunities for discussing and analyzing perfection? #g2great
A2: Perfection can be oneās perception of reality. Humanisticly, people paint pictures they think they see. Realistically, there is no perfection. Itās in the eye of the beholder! #g2great
A2: So many struggling writers feel that strong writing flows effortlessly from good writers. We need to help train our students that most first drafts from all writers are, to quote Anne Lamott, "shitty first drafts"! #g2great
A2: Learning is sometimes messy and involves reflecting & learning from mistakes. Perfection perception hinders the messes that can sometimes yield masterpieces. #G2Great
A3 FIRST we must create a safe environment that is rooted in respectful relationships. For some kids, thereās a lot of water under the shaming bridge so RE-building trust is our first step. #G2Great
I always love this image, shared by @GeorgeCouros when discussing the process of learning! I think it embodies that imperfections are part of growth! #G2Great
Oh yes! @mrbgilson I'm mentoring a new teacher now. Promised to tell her a teaching mess-up story from my life each day. Just so she sees that this is the process. Try, rethink, revise, try again. #G2Great
A2: The false narrative that expert teachers do not mess up is such a daunting thing to live up to as a learner. I think we must always remember that people work so hard behind the scenes to come out polished. #G2Great
Such a great point Ron. Itās when we pretend it doesnāt exist that it sneaks up on us like a thief in the night. Itās not IF but WHEN it will rear itās fuzzy little head #G2Great
A2 If we want students become lifelong, comprehending, inquiring readers, most of our reading time must be sustained time for reading mostly texts students self-select. Guided reading is a temporary scaffold to that end, although too often it becomes the main event. #G2Great
A3: Join in the failure party. I model success after failure daily when I misspell things on the board (curse) I also make sure my Ss know that there is always a mulligan (or 10) if they need it. #G2Great
A3- We speak about 'interesting mistakes'; we have a lesson at the start of the year on our 'stretchy' brains and how mistakes and trying new things help them grow and refer to this lesson all year long #G2Great
A3: I need to echo what @CRCarter313 said a while ago. RELATIONSHIPS! I know I feel more comfortable "failing" around people who love and care about me. The same goes for our students. #g2great
A2: Striving for perfection implies constant comparison. If our students are constantly comparing themselves to one another or adult standards of form, correctness, and completion, they may never even get started. #G2Great
A3 Challenge students to fail at least two times in a quarter. To try something they feel certain they can't do. Congratulate and reward those failures. They might think you're crazy, but you'll know better. #g2great
Can I admit, @LRobbTeacher that this was hard for me to learn. That perfection gene kicks me in the knees and I have to feel the feeling and then move on. Always helps me to admit and talk about my mistakes. Wish I learned that as a child. #G2Great
I'm writing a sentence a day in a journal at the end of each day staring this semester. Most of them...well besides no school/snowday...is something where I have messed up and learned a lesson. #g2great#teachwrite
#G2Great
If we can't embody embarrassment, it will be hard for our Ss to bravely put their ideas out there. I think embarrassment and shame are closely related. A little @BreneBrown helped show me that. A great parallel read to @Tom_ Newkirk's Embarrassment! #G2Great
Don't you think we'd be wise to model our imperfections by simply just showing them to our students? If we're willing to acknowledge our own mistakes as writers, they will feel reassured knowing they can make mistakes, too. #G2Great
#G2Great
A1 I was an extemely shy kid. I missed out on so much learning and, frankly, joy in my youth. I see it with teens. Problem: egocentrism of teens means they think everyone sees every mis-step and mistake.
A2 All great learning happens through a process of making mistakes and trying again. When Ts or Ss have an expectation of excellence they become performers rather than learners. I want us all to be learners until we're ready to perform. #g2great
A2 Totally agree. We rarely see the bad work that is produced. We only see final, polished work. The reality is that bad work leads 2 the great work-therefore, no such thing as bad work-Think that teaching the process of creating is 1 of the most important things 2 teach #G2Great
A3 The environment and relationship that help students know this is a safe place and a caring place to TRY. Give them shout outs for success & be there when uncertainly or embarrassment occurs (and inevitably it will) #G2Great
A3: The culture we create in our classrooms mirrors studentsā actions and reactions to taking risks and feeling supported. Ts who choose their words & body language wisely, nurture their students to do the same. #g2great
A3: Write with them. Write beside them. Choose to be your genuine self. Make visible your thinking/writing. Share your frustrations and struggles as a writer. Demonstrate the work involved. Consider mistakes as learning opportunities. #g2great
A3: Join in the failure party. I model success after failure daily when I misspell things on the board (curse) I also make sure my Ss know that there is always a mulligan (or 10) if they need it. #G2Great
A2: If we never struggle, are we really learning? Students and teachers alike learn best in an environment that thrives on perseverance and risk taking. An environment that celebrates the process. #G2Great
I think about it a bit like meditation. "Oh, there's that feeling again. I'm going to remind myself that this is automatic and I can move through it productively." @MelissaTurenne1 I needed you as a teacher. #G2Great
Embarrassment comes from our automatic system and as such isn't something we can just wish away. We can, however, help ourselves reframe situations and our interpretations of them. I teach myself and my Ss to do this. #g2great
A3 We can begin by sharing our own vulnerability with students and creating a safe space for risk and trying out new things. Inviting students to discuss their growth rather than focusing on a final product. #G2Great
A3 We can tell our stories of failing and how we used failure to grow. Try to help students see failure as information to reflect on. Also, when students improve Toss any low grades. #g2great
A2: There is pressure to curate an ideal image of oneself on social media and shy away from being real and raw. Reflection, openness, and honesty can help reveal the truth behind the 'airbrushing.' #g2great
#G2Great A2 sadly many have succumbed to āif it appears to be so it must beā So many opportunities are missed when we are reluctant to be honest with ourselves and others; questions go unanswered, reflection ceases to exist, action becomes inaction/complacency
A3 WE could begin by living and breathing how we deal with failing publicly. Rather than hiding our foibles from kids they can become a model for how WE approach inevitable human experiences. #G2Great
@CRCarter313 it's crucial that we aim for the collective understanding, not the individual statement. Conversation is a great space for this work. #G2Great
A2: Love the term "leaders of honesty." But we haven't yet addressed the highly qualified teacher (aka perfect) at the best districts in the country (aka less diverse). #G2Great
A3 Create a culture that validates and embraces āfailureā as much as āsuccessā ?? Change the vocabulary, lexicon?? Semantics can be a powerful tool. #G2Great
A3: We fail publicly in our teaching and need to own those moments. While much reflection on practice is and should be private or in collaboration with other Ts, we can find ways to appropriately share some of that thinking with our kids. #G2Great
Honestly, shift our language, therefore our perspective, for starters. Our attempts of trying a new thing & not figuring it out right away are never a failure in my mind. They are an approximation toward something new. Shift language & perspective to change the narrative #g2great
I visited a classroom today where students were trying something new, some were non-readers, and there was one student who just came to the school from a different country...the RELATIONSHIPS in that classroom made it work & the learning that was happening was beautiful #g2great
A1: There are ubiquitous moments in teaching where we HAVE to allow ourselves to say/embrace, "I don't know." But what we do after we utter this phrase is the difference between embarrassment and empowerment. The same is true of and for our students in the room, yes? #G2Great
A3 As Ts, we need to create a culture of learning - of trying, failing, trying again, and of being supportive of each other through the process. Ts have to be part of this too. #G2Great
I think too that sometimes the things that cause us embarrassment can be our own misconceptions and misinterpretations. Itās not make it any less painful but we do need to be aware #G2Great
A2: Imperfection makes us human. Itās part of the human experience. And when we are vulnerable, we experience true connection and belonging - both of which are vital in a learning community. #G2Great
A3 From Day 1, welcome statements of students that express fear of failure. Build community so students know weāre in this learning thing together. Share personal & academic failures and share the bounce back from them. #g2great
Thinking of art shows, right?!? Working with the awesome Art T at my school to have students show the entire process not just the final product. #wwprsd@WWP_Arts#G2Great
It is a good one. I share it with Ts & Ss. I also share my messy chicken scratch notebook, which is my extended brain, but also show what can come from that! I'm the poster child for #OwnYourReality#G2Greathttps://t.co/3tXsroqR52
A3 I love Jon Harperās MY BAD podcasts where educators reflect on their public failings and how they learned from them. We could open conversations like this in our classrooms. #G2Great@Jonharper70bd
A1-Embarrassment can hold us back & keep us from pursuing dreams & interests, or from "trying again". Consider this through Ss eyes-can be debilitating. So important for Ss to know we ALL make mistakes & have embarrassing moments. Keep going! Build confidence & be brave! #g2great
A3: Draw on anecdote. I told #Room407 students that my grad students used to pack their bags at 5 minutes to 8 thinking I would let them go early. It upset me. I found out later the class ended at 8. Not 8:30. I was keeping them up to the very end. Not dismissing early. #g2great
Sharing personal stories are so important for Sts to see vulnerability in all of us. Where we go from there helps them see that possibilities and options #G2great
A3 Challenge students to fail at least two times in a quarter. To try something they feel certain they can't do. Congratulate and reward those failures. They might think you're crazy, but you'll know better. #g2great
A4 Allow more talk before and after required reading and writing. Build collaborative partnerships. Stress growth in Learning AND Thinking. Be more flexible about products. (Oral & Vis. creations)
@tom_newkirk#G2Great@heinemannpub
A2 All great learning happens through a process of making mistakes and trying again. When Ts or Ss have an expectation of excellence they become performers rather than learners. I want us all to be learners until we're ready to perform. #g2great
A3 We can begin by sharing our own vulnerability with students and creating a safe space for risk and trying out new things. Inviting students to discuss their growth rather than focusing on a final product. #G2Great
A3 Some of the most powerful experiences I've had as a teacher are when I admitted to kids when I failed them. Reflecting out loud and then getting feedback from Ss elevates vulnerability. "I let you guys down when I... What can I do to avoid that in the future?" #G2Great
Sharing personal stories are so important for Sts to see vulnerability in all of us. Where we go from there helps them see that possibilities and options #G2great
I always love this image, shared by @GeorgeCouros when discussing the process of learning! I think it embodies that imperfections are part of growth! #G2Great
A4 We could start by shifting from obsession w/data & truly see the child in front of us. Numbers can cloud our view of amazing potential ALL kids bring to the learning table. #G2Great
I'm writing a sentence a day in a journal at the end of each day staring this semester. Most of them...well besides no school/snowday...is something where I have messed up and learned a lesson. #g2great#teachwrite

A2: The false narrative that expert teachers do not mess up is such a daunting thing to live up to as a learner. I think we must always remember that people work so hard behind the scenes to come out polished. #G2Great
A3: Provide Ss with low-stakes activities that encourage risk taking, problem solving, creativity and openness. Many great improv games and activities you can do with kids of all ages (and adults!) to cultivate this. #g2great
I always love this image, shared by @GeorgeCouros when discussing the process of learning! I think it embodies that imperfections are part of growth! #G2Great
Embarrassment comes from our automatic system and as such isn't something we can just wish away. We can, however, help ourselves reframe situations and our interpretations of them. I teach myself and my Ss to do this. #g2great
A2: Learning is sometimes messy and involves reflecting & learning from mistakes. Perfection perception hinders the messes that can sometimes yield masterpieces. #G2Great
A4: It is so important to find real, actual strengths that each student has, but it is especially important for those who feel stimgatized. @Tom_Newkirk talks about how those strengths can be their strength and help them through the hard parts of learning. #g2great
A4 We could start by shifting from obsession w/data & truly see the child in front of us. Numbers can cloud our view of amazing potential ALL kids bring to the learning table. #G2Great
#G2Great. A3Failing publicly is one thing. Sometimes succeeding publicly is tough too. Someone once told me that there is nothing more humiliating to a kid than being publicly praised for something they know is easy for others. Tās have to be sensitve to all of it.
A4: Celebrating the small moments. With those students, working 1:1 or conferring is where I find where I can help nurture that positive learning identity. #g2great
A3. I think we need to teach kids how to handle others' embarrassment with support and kindness. It's as much about how your embarrassment is treated by others, as it is about the original mistake #g2great
#G2Great A3 we must be willing to step out of our own comfort zone and be willing to take a risk and show Ss those risks even those than fail terribly were worth it, we often learn more from our mistakes than our successes
A3 Creating a class mission statement at start of school together that articulates safe environment, importance of vulnerability, celebration of failure as learning tool. Revisit that mission statement every day. #G2Great
I agree. Comparison without understanding of how people got to where they are on their continuum is a source of #Embarrassment. Social Media doesn't always help on that level either. #G2Great
A3. Celebrate the noticing, not the failing. When Ss self-monitor, self-correct, redirect, try again we honor that level of awareness. Invite others then, "Who else noticed the way ___ did?" #G2Great
A3 I was reading a document on rigor the other day that mentioned hypothesis. Could the use & recognition of "testing" hypothesis create conditions for public failure minus the embarrassment? #G2Great
A4 We canāt expect kids to see their immense potential if we donāt. We must learn to dig deeper to find the gifts of every child and celebrate those so that we can bring them into the learning experience. #G2Great
How satisfying it is in the safe spaces where our inside and outside match. We can be whole. That's real trust. Our classrooms can aim for this. @MsColeSCPS@gcouros@Tom_Newkirk#G2Great
A4- recognize our own biases towards learning which we may /may not deem valuable; came to realize I celebrated writers more often as it resonates with me as a learner #G2Great
The way her son's teachers treated him was a true embarrassment and disgraceful. I am only about half way through but such an important story. #g2great@LetchfordLois
I think having a sense of humor and not taking ourselves too seriously helps with mistake making. Kids are so forgiving, we shouldnāt be so hard on ourselves- kids arenāt hard on us. In fact, I think the more human we are, the more kids can relate. #G2Great
A3 We create cultures of learning where the focus is on growth. Teach ourselves the difference between practice and performance. Mistakes are always a part of learning, but they are easier emotionally if we make them before the performance. #g2great
A3 We need to build relationships and a culture of care and understanding. There should never be embarrassment. Build on learning opportunities. If we live in respect, we will feel safe to fail and learn. We need to nurture curiosity. #g2great
#g2great Witness adults sharing their most embarrassing childhood artifacts (journals, letters, poems, lyrics, plays, home movies, art) with others, in order to reveal stories about their lives. https://t.co/aPLEjZ1I0s
I always love this image, shared by @GeorgeCouros when discussing the process of learning! I think it embodies that imperfections are part of growth! #G2Great
#G2Great A2 sadly many have succumbed to āif it appears to be so it must beā So many opportunities are missed when we are reluctant to be honest with ourselves and others; questions go unanswered, reflection ceases to exist, action becomes inaction/complacency
A4: Every class contains a group of learners that share space on the same spectrum. We should take care not to privilege certain points on that continuum. #G2Great
A4: What was the Donald Murray quote you had, @Tom_Newkirk, that he asked when he first started reading any student paper? What did she do well? #g2great
I think too that when you seek perfection you can miss the powerful little things that are there when we trust our GUT and all our foibles - not the myth of perfect (and hi friend) #G2Great
#G2Great
A4: Remembering my own roots. Thank goodness for paper transcripts of the 80s. Students will have to take my work for it that we share a struggle with this thing called school. It's one reason. . .that I came back to thinking I never would. I have a pedagogy (purpose). #g2great
A4 Kids know when we see their limitations over their potential & so change begins within each of us. When we see the glimmers of brilliance that reside within each child, they will begin to see it too! #G2Great
#G2Great. A3Failing publicly is one thing. Sometimes succeeding publicly is tough too. Someone once told me that there is nothing more humiliating to a kid than being publicly praised for something they know is easy for others. Tās have to be sensitve to all of it.
A3 Make sure the stakes aren't always high. It's easier to try and fail when there isn't so much on the line-we all need more practice recovering from failures-we don't need consequences that compound our embarrassment/disappointment. #G2Great
A4 Stop pulling those kids out of classāit embarrasses them!! Use a push-in model. Have one-on-one conversations with them to build their confidence and help them see progress. Give them strategies to help them succeed.#g2great
A3 - Give opportunities for children to copy pictures as means to find ideas for writiing without fear of getting it right, copy to think and find your own ideas and way = voice, autonomy for the young and old #G2Great
A5: @trevorabryan#AOC leneses are an amazing tool for all Ss to enter a conversation. So many opportunities for scaffolded conversations & personal connections. Ss who might have been the quietest emerge from their shell & the metamorphosis is beautiful to witness! #G2Great
A5 Classroom discussions begin after pair share. āShare your thought or your partnerās thought. Pair-Share- Pairs-Square = groups of 4 sharing. Write before discussion. Gallery walk first & then discuss.
@tom_newkirk#G2Great@heinemannpub
A4 The game changer for me as a reading teacher was Retrospective Miscue Analysis to teach readers that everyone miscues. Lucky to work with Carol Gilles after reading @HeinemannPubās Reading Conversations by her and Rita Moore. #g2great
A4 If we differentiate, if we treat students with love and kindness, then everyone will have a personal learning plan. When we organize learning for each individual student, there is no more stigma around learning differences/difficulties. We are all unique learners. #g2great
A3. We model failure, we teach the resiliency skills kids need to fail and continue to move forward. We embrace failure as an opportunity for success and improvement. #G2Great
A4: The room must always feel inclusive. Our room. All year. I was raised in a faith system that saw me removed from any room that was celebrating an event. I was other just about every month. This should not happen for or to kids. Not in our classroom. This is our room. #g2great
A3 It's harder to fail if there isn't only ONE right answer or way of doing something. Narrow definitions of success increase sense of failure. #G2Great
A5 Itās important to have a wide variety of discussion options. Turn & talk or working in triads can be less threatening than whole class dialogue. We need a range of talk possibilities. #G2Great
A3 We need to build relationships and a culture of care and understanding. There should never be embarrassment. Build on learning opportunities. If we live in respect, we will feel safe to fail and learn. We need to nurture curiosity. #g2great
And let's be honest, we all have had students where this is challenging... that is where our work is. It is easy to connect to those who are like us. #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A4 We canāt expect kids to see their immense potential if we donāt. We must learn to dig deeper to find the gifts of every child and celebrate those so that we can bring them into the learning experience. #G2Great
A4 within every student there is a strength and a difference. Look at the student in front of us find what makes him/her a shining light. #G2Great Numbers/data rarely tell the true story
I teach about the learning curve and the growth mindset. We look at all the things they have mastered that I have not. We look at how every one is at different places on different learning curves. You are where you are and all there is to do is grow! #g2great
A4: Had a convo with S about her anxiety about a presentation in class tomorrow. I addressed the reality of her fears by sharing my anxiety when before I present at conferences. I reassured her that we are all friends here. She listened and agreed to try. #g2great
That's a journey that could be considered embarrassing by some. Even thinking about an early line "How ironic. The teacher-librarian's daughter doesn't read." But she's truly my greatest teacher. #G2Great
A5 Started "Daily Quick Reflections and Shares" using the book of my life right now Together is Better. Slowly but surely more voices are being heard. #G2Great
A5: Having students write about answers before we talk. Not only does this lead to deeper answers, but it also helps the ones who process a little slower and acts as a comfort blanket for those who are scared. #g2great
A5 We give lip service to the importance of wait time but we rarely put this into practice in discussions. Giving kids time to process with one person or in visual or written from first can extend those conversations. #G2Great
A4 Undertanding that a strength based approach where I name student strengths and invite students to try strategies works so much better than a diagnose & fix approach. #g2great
A4 The game changer for me as a reading teacher was Retrospective Miscue Analysis to teach readers that everyone miscues. Lucky to work with Carol Gilles after reading @HeinemannPubās Reading Conversations by her and Rita Moore. #g2great
Absolutely @LitCoachLady the stakes have to be lower so that we can build stamina for discomfort of feeling the places where we need to try again. #G2Great
A3 Make sure the stakes aren't always high. It's easier to try and fail when there isn't so much on the line-we all need more practice recovering from failures-we don't need consequences that compound our embarrassment/disappointment. #G2Great
"the safe spaces where ur inside and outside match." Gorgeous! think if we really could help our ss feel this equilibrium. Beautifully said @pranikoff#G2Great#LitBankStreet
How satisfying it is in the safe spaces where our inside and outside match. We can be whole. That's real trust. Our classrooms can aim for this. @MsColeSCPS@gcouros@Tom_Newkirk#G2Great
A6: In our mentor group today, we watched MLK Jr.'s "What is Your Life's Blueprint?" Would be easy to follow with open discussion, right? "What's your dream?" I chose to give kids blueprint paper and let each write out/share with me. Dreams need time to proof quietly. #G2Great
A4 Designing an environment and planning learning that includes all learners. Constant talk and action that shows we all are learners AND teachers in the classroom community. #G2Great
A4 We can start by focusing our lens on what students can do instead of identifying deficits. Give feedback by noticing and naming strengths, not simply pointing out errors. #G2Great
A5: Having students write about answers before we talk. Not only does this lead to deeper answers, but it also helps the ones who process a little slower and acts as a comfort blanket for those who are scared. #g2great
A5- we start every day with a morning greeting- they greet each other respectfully- even most reluctant talkers join in- chance to be looked at in the eye and acknowledged is a powerful way to begin the day #G2Great
A5 We need to allow for various discussion models. In pairs, whole group, socratic seminar, video. When we give students the chance to choose, to be comfortable, they feel more engaged and will to try and learn. Build on trust, build on their willingness. Help them grow. #g2great
A1 Life is full of embarrassing situations-some laughable, some upsetting but it is how we move on that makes the difference. Love your thought - "True learning means growth & uncertainty. #G2Great
In reply to
@franmcveigh, @Tom_Newkirk, @HeinemannPub
A3 We must cultivate cultures of trust where Ts and Ss engage in messy learning that has missteps and forward steps. In that culture, all voices are honored and supported. #G2Great
A5: Whenever I modeled thinking aloud, I would remind Ss they could do this as well as "self talk" during discussions. I also think technology can help with this providing students with opportunities to respond through digital polls before or during talk time #G2Great
A4 Notice and name the strengths of learners. Empty praise doesn't build identity. Remind Ss we all have goals for next steps, not just 'struggling' learners-if we are all growing there is less stigma to working on needs. #G2Great
A5: Not all discussion has to take place in the public and often evaluative context of the whole group. Be intentional about normalizing student talk across varied formats. #g2great
A4: This requires a cultural shift in classrooms & schools. Learning to respect differences. Seeing differences as strengths, not places for labels. Providing books and writing opportunities for students. Using conversation as a place for student & teacher learning. #g2great
A4: Each student is capable, but once we set definitions of what capable means i. e. test scores, we sort kids into a pass/fail scheme. Respect all students and threat each as capable. #G2Great
A5 Invest in relationship building. Give direct practice in talking in subjects they know a lot about--themselves and scaffold in academic language and structures after relationships are built. #g2great
A4- recognize our own biases towards learning which we may /may not deem valuable; came to realize I celebrated writers more often as it resonates with me as a learner #G2Great
A3 Yes, Mary Jon's podcasts are great. He is one of those rare individuals who speaks honestly about missteps and ways to move forward. #reflective teacher #G2Great
A5 I love to tell my students stories about my grade school hijinxes. Like when my best friend and I had to stay after school and not talk for 5 minutes- impossible- so we put tape on our own mouths. My students love stories like that! I have many!#G2Great
A3 Yes @LitCoachLady! every baby step toward that growth is to be noticed and celebrated. we can model our own self monitoring self-correcting, and coach them along. love doing a fishbowl with a couple of students in the middle who really GET it and can peer-model it! #g2great
A3. Celebrate the noticing, not the failing. When Ss self-monitor, self-correct, redirect, try again we honor that level of awareness. Invite others then, "Who else noticed the way ___ did?" #G2Great
A5: Lots of different structures for talk including partnerships, small groups and grand conversations along with cooperative learning structures that guarantee all voices will be heard like Save the Last Word for Me, Each one Teach One, & Pass the Book. #g2great
A5: I love Think/Pair/Share. Ask Ss to share and one writes group answer on board. Forums work great for 1:1 tech. Practice sharing a word, phrase, or sentence from creative pieces. Low risk reduces the threshold for participation. #g2great
I think too that when you seek perfection you can miss the powerful little things that are there when we trust our GUT and all our foibles - not the myth of perfect (and hi friend) #G2Great
A5: Start small...have sts plan what they want to say, turn & talk, provide conversation stems...model & practice until sts feel comfortable to engage on their own. #G2Great
We've implemented a Quiet 10 with no marks involved based on @FletcherRalph 's JoyWrite because many of our Ss were so paralyzed with fear of getting words wrong that they wouldn't even try to write. #G2Great
A5 I love Smokey Daniels ābest kept secret.ā Written conversations can offer another form of dialogue as kids communicate in writing with words and images. #G2Great@smokeylit
Peter Johnston's words made me shift my own teaching dramatically. His writing was seminal in my development and my understanding that semantics shift and build mindset. #LitBankStreet#G2Great
YES itās the lip service that gets in the way of doing. The kids that need time, need us to help them find the space to process what and how they want to say it #g2great
A5 We give lip service to the importance of wait time but we rarely put this into practice in discussions. Giving kids time to process with one person or in visual or written from first can extend those conversations. #G2Great
A5 Pyramid activity allows Ss to build off peers response. Even anonymous shared responses using a collaborative digital tool like Padlet opens doors fr the timid sharer. #g2great
A5: Tom talks about those after-meeting talks/chats. Yes. So important. I could have asked a student a follow-up question from last week's concern for his father. It became something more special that I pulled him aside after class and had a 1:1 moment. Open and honest. #g2great
A5: Students EXPLAIN their mathematical thinking š to each other through turn and talks and shared teaching! In Reading, students buddy read with CHOICE partners to reduce anxiety and allow flexibility! #G2Great
A5 Lots of turn and talk... think, ink, pair, share..raise the levels of engagement and are easier for everyone to have an entry point into the conversation. #G2Great
A6: Bring @DrMaryHoward into your life. Sincerely, the #G2Great chat & voxer families embody how to do it. @suzrolander is brilliant as well with "How might this seem if we...?" verbiage. We need to model vulnerability first. #ChoiceWords
A6 Asking for help is agreeing that professionals are #bettertogether. We must model this. T:T; T:Admin; T;P; Admin:P. Live this bc we can all use some help some day!
@tom_newkirk#G2Great@heinemannpub
I think having a sense of humor and not taking ourselves too seriously helps with mistake making. Kids are so forgiving, we shouldnāt be so hard on ourselves- kids arenāt hard on us. In fact, I think the more human we are, the more kids can relate. #G2Great
A6: Be real...say what you mean, and mean what you say. Be confident in your beliefs but always open that you don't know it all. Hard to do in some districts where test scores & "gottcha" practices build distrust. So thankful to be working in a model district #wwprsd#G2Great
A6 We can make this a part of business as usual by creating a culture of vulnerability & trust. We have to embrace opportunities for teachers to engage in hard conversations to create a culture that respects them. #G2Great
A5: Free-Write FriYAY!! Allow more CHOICE and VOICE in student's writing to show writing is not always something that is critiqued by others. It is a beautiful piece of ART! #g2great
A6: Be the first one to take the vulnerable leap, expect nothing in return. Show co-workers it is safe to ask for help and they might join in on the next leap. #g2great.
A5 Give students time to rehearse their thinking in writing or in a partner conversation before a discussion. Invite students to pose their Qs instead of just answering ours. #g2great
I'm in complete agreement @DrMaryHoward and we have to recognize that our quieter students have deep thoughts. We need to make room and space and time for them. #G2Great
A5 Itās important to have a wide variety of discussion options. Turn & talk or working in triads can be less threatening than whole class dialogue. We need a range of talk possibilities. #G2Great
A6 We need to create a culture of family, trust and love with our staff. We need to support each other. We are all life long learners. Create a culture of collaboration. Work together for the kids. View colleagues as ways to learn and be better. A way to grow. TRUST #g2great
To add a Johnston reference to those youāve mentioned, we can always seize the smallest bit that the students has done well and move forward from there. #g2great
A5 After turn and talk invite Ss to share what their partners said-encourages listening, but also doesn't put our own thinking on the spot if we aren't comfortable sharing. #G2Great
A6: District mandated PLCs with google forms attached? Just kidding. Just get teachers together and ask them to gush about their classes and students. Showing interest and valuing them will invite them to the table of engagement. #g2great
A6 Others feel valued when we honor their strengths & it lifts such burdens off us - Have learned that with my @ProjectLITBHS committee. #collaborationrocks#G2Great
A6: I feel as thought I am competent in the art medium that I have chosen to pursue, but nothing feels as good as consulting with our building's art teacher when I'm thinking about stretching out into something new. My inquiry becomes our exploration of possibility. #g2great
A6 We can offer many opportunities for informal agenda-free conversations where Ts can explore professional curiosities side by side w/ supportive others. This should be what we do regularly, not just a PD āactivity.ā #G2Great
A6: I've been lucky to have a few amazing mentors who have taught me the value of asking any and all questions. This is a norm I've explicitly set with mentees, grade level teams/individual Ts I work with, and students. #g2great
A6 I remind myself not to perpetuate a narrative of perfection with preservice and new teachers. If I make myself teach with my door open. I remind myself that the myth of the perfect teacher is...well, a myth. #g2great
A6: As a literacy consultant I usually begin by telling teachers I hope I mess up as it will be a better conversations about kids! Wish we could all just hope to mess up #g2great
A6: Be real...say what you mean, and mean what you say. Be confident in your beliefs but always open that you don't know it all. Hard to do in some districts where test scores & "gottcha" practices build distrust. So thankful to be working in a model district #wwprsd#G2Great
A6 We can offer many opportunities for informal agenda-free conversations where Ts can explore professional curiosities side by side w/ supportive others. This should be what we do regularly, not just a PD āactivity.ā #G2Great
A5 There are so many protocols that lend themselves to having children open up: turn and talk, written conversation, triad talk. We need to encourage all Ss to be involved in collaborative conversations. Build cultures of trust. #G2Great
Humor and Connection is so important in a classroom. When I found out a student was a fellow yogi, we stood on our heads in the middle of class. haha :) #G2Great
A5: Brainstorming gives voice to students who may not be as confident in their writing. When students put pen to paper, I visit individual students, ask them about their thinking, then encourage them to share during the debrief. Iāve noticed changes in confidence. #G2Great
A5 When we have built a strong relationship with a student, they can believe we have their best interest at heart. Trust in each other as people builds a climate where Ss take chances for learning. #G2Great
A6: As a literacy consultant I usually begin by telling teachers I hope I mess up as it will be a better conversations about kids! Wish we could all just hope to mess up #g2great
A6 Our evaluation system goes against the grain of this thinking so we need to offer supportive conversations before the fact. This is not about āGotchaā but initiating helpful professional feedback #G2Great
A6 We have to help each other remember that we are all learners too. We should be trying new things and making mistakes just like our students. We have to move away from high stakes thinking even if others are still living that reality! #g2great
#G2Great A5 silent signals, draw and pass, partnerships turn and talk, stop and jot, exit tickets, Tech apps for student response like Plickers and Socrative
Since reading embarrassment, I've noticed how much my HS Ss do not know how to get help. We've started rehearsal conversations to help them get help. #g2great
When @HeinemannPub author @Tom_Newkirk is quoting genius from #DonGraves about authentic relationship building w/ Ss on #G2great chat, you know the night is šÆ. This, fam š ššÆ
A7 As a part of learning and inquiry, where can we find answers? Who can help? Every day. Itās a sign of growth to ask for help. Easier with SIRI, Alexa, GPS. More normalized than past.
@tom_newkirk#G2Great@heinemannpub
A7: Decentralize power in schools & classrooms. @SusanTotaro "the smartest people in the room are sitting next to you." Remind Ss they have the power and knowledge and model ways to seek out answers devoid of just coming to you as the T. #G2Great#wwprsd
Critical Literacy, especially around images and Social Media are truly important lessons and conversations to have with our students. The just-woke-up selfie scene which you can glimpse in this Jumanji 2 trailer would be perfect. #G2Greathttps://t.co/lNB4X4nyCP
A2: Especially when the world they consume, social media and otherwise, is also airbrushed and perfect. How do we make opportunities for discussing and analyzing perfection? #g2great
Humor and Connection is so important in a classroom. When I found out a student was a fellow yogi, we stood on our heads in the middle of class. haha :) #G2Great
A7 Seeking help is a way to build autonomy and mastery. It is part of building community. There is no one knowledge keeper. We need to confer more, talk, discuss, learn, observe. We support and guide learners. Coach them in their learning. #g2great
A6: Think of your questions as inquiry into growing something great! Also, the teacher next to you is also in need of help. Be the risk taker. Be the example. #G2Great
A7 Kidwatching offers a positive lens for students as they engage in the heat of learning moments. This is where we can notice wonderful things kids bring to the learning table NOW to explore next step options. #G2Great
A7 Through kid watching, SG, conferring - KNOW our kids. Let them take the lead. Show them how their needs lead to instruction. Formative assmtmt = changes to meet S needs!
@tom_newkirk#G2Great@heinemannpub
A6: Be the first one to take the vulnerable leap, expect nothing in return. Show co-workers it is safe to ask for help and they might join in on the next leap. #g2great.
After I read that in @Tom_Newkirkās #Embarrassment, I sent emails to my online students & made an anchor chart for my class with conversation starters. #g2great
A7: I like asking the Q: How are things going over here? Can I take a look? Instead of what can I help you with. I think it opens up doors where others say oh no I am fine. #G2Great
.@pranikoff book Teaching Talk helps with these conversations immensely! I saw her set norms in our graduate level class tonight and it was brilliant! #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A5 There are so many protocols that lend themselves to having children open up: turn and talk, written conversation, triad talk. We need to encourage all Ss to be involved in collaborative conversations. Build cultures of trust. #G2Great
#g2great I forgot to put a hashtag- Fran, I was always sent outside for talking by the nuns. Good thing we have this chat!!! No one can kick us out! š¤£šš¤£š
Oddly Iāve been in many building when they asked me to coach the weakest Ts & not work with those who are very proficient. I always tell them itās a mistake! #G2Great
A3: Hi from OR coast. We can create conditions of support by being real, nurturing, and caring. We are (and help to regulate) the climate of our classrooms and schools. āThis is what we do here, we make mistakes, keep each other safe..learn #G2Great
This has been fun, but I've got piles of papers before I sleep. Thank you to @Tom_Newkirk for all that you do. Slow-reading changed everything for me and Embarrassment is the best professional book I've read this decade. I can't wait to see what comes from you next!! #g2great
Humor and Connection is so important in a classroom. When I found out a student was a fellow yogi, we stood on our heads in the middle of class. haha :) #G2Great
Asking for help us one of the most vulnerable things one can ever do, at any age, in any context. And, it's so a part of how we grow in community. Let's encourage ourselves to do it publicly more.
#g2great A6
A6: We have to embrace the growth mindset we are asking sās to utilize. Itās okay to not have the answers and need support. Itās what you do with it. #G2Great
A6 Maybe that is why #EDCamps are so popular with Ts- we give each other those opportunities to lift one another and not just wait to be 'lifted'! #G2Great
A7: It strikes me that while the standards and the tools that we can use in the classroom have changed, two things have not by way of their look and feel: the look of defiance and the look of confusion. Both can be assessed informally. Data-rich-and-ready for response. #g2great
Actually...another student took the picture. My former student posted the photo on FB the other day saying how she learned about building community and making connections with students when I did this with her and the class. haha#nolongerscaredofbeingembarrassed #G2Great
A6 Maybe that is why #EDCamps are so popular with Ts- we give each other those opportunities to lift one another and not just wait to be 'lifted'! #G2Great
We need to create and nurture a culture of learning among colleagues. Open doors, be more vulnerable. Admin needs to support and allow for collaboration. Let us grow as a learning family. #g2great
A6 Asking for help is agreeing that professionals are #bettertogether. We must model this. T:T; T:Admin; T;P; Admin:P. Live this bc we can all use some help some day!

A7: Writing Workshop encourages students to seek help. Itās a give and take: help each other, help me, and help them. When we include kids by seeking their help/perspective/opinion they see their voice is valued. Peter Johnstonās Choice Words is a great resource. #g2great
A7 Coaching/conferring allow us to offer individual positive support that meets kids where they are. If done as a positive invitational process it can be one of the most powerful things we do. #G2Great
A7 Helpful if authentic opportunity to ask Ss for help arises. Son will marry young woman whose parents speak no English. Ss are helping me w/Spanish phrases. "Miss, you're doing good, but your pronunciation needs work." #g2great
Actually...another student took the picture. My former student posted the photo on FB the other day saying how she learned about building community and making connections with students when I did this with her and the class. haha#nolongerscaredofbeingembarrassed #G2Great
A5 We need to reach out to all students, understand who they are, and build RELATIONSHIPS to strengthen the culture of trust that needs to be cultivated. #G2Great
A7 Teacher rotation is an underutilized supportive process of on-the-spot assessment as an instructional merger. Itās affords us a powerful process of responsive support in the moment rather than after the fact. #G2Great
A7: Donāt jump to an offer help. Ask students to help you understand their thinking and assist you in reaching clarity. Take care to avoid positioning student thought as deficient. #G2Great
.@pranikoff book Teaching Talk helps with these conversations immensely!
#G2Great
A8: LIFE IS ABOUT ITERATIONS, NOT MISTAKES! Early on in life, my mother modeled that reaching out 2 family/friends, being vulnerable when you're in need, leads 2 growth. She was my pioneer & lucky 2 have #G2Great fam, @DrMaryHoward@suzrolander@EduCourts@pranikoff etc #NoStigma
A7 I also think texts help us to help kids. Often it's easier to talk about a character's actions & what we think they could have done than it is to talk about real people. #G2Great

I'm with you @DrMaryHoward I've told admin I'm not here to 'fix' anyone-everyone has the right to take their teaching to the next level and collaborate with others. #G2Great
Oddly Iāve been in many building when they asked me to coach the weakest Ts & not work with those who are very proficient. I always tell them itās a mistake! #G2Great
A8 FIRST we create a trusting culture where we can share failure & disappointment and how we move past them. We can model how WE translate this into positive next steps. #G2Great
A7: by making sās the experts and allowing them to problem solve for and with each other. They have to trust each other and realize not knowing it all is okay! #G2Great
I love this question! #g2great That kid watching gives us time to listen before jumping in. A chance to help when necessary but mainly a chance to stand by if needed. Building stamina for us and our Sts. Itās hard not to do the heavy lifting.
Congratulations Stefanie. Weāre so happy youāre here tonight and grateful to @HeinemannPub for giving a book away and Tom Newkirk for writing this brilliant work fo art! @Tom_Newkirk#G2Great
A8 Often when you can break something into smaller pieces, you find that only part of it is confusing; the S really knows more than he/she thinks! #g2great
This is such a great point. Being able to articulate what you would like support with or feedback on is very important, but it also takes practice. #G2Great
Conferring in workshop is empowering. Itās nudging a student a little further with just the right amount of support. How exciting when you see this model of support translate to other aspects of a ss life #G2Great
We have at least one PD day in our district where Ts sign up to share their interests, expertise, and passion in sessions for other Ts. We love it! #G2Great
Remove the negative connotation of failure. It is hard and by the time the kids get to me in JH it is pretty hard wired but we can break the cycle. Just give more chances than they need. Once they know it is there when needed without asking for it the fear falls away #G2Great
A7: Set up routines for asking for help throughout the day from teachers, partners & resources in the classroom. In conferences, encourage students to share something that has been challenging for them in addition to discussing what they're proud of. #g2great
A7: Promote student work in your classroom by using it as a model in your lessons. This will teach kids to look to their peers for help and treat them as experts. #g2great
A8 It has to begin with us. We canāt have a grade/red mark mentality and think that weāre creating a trusting culture. We need to offer experiences that allow kids to move disappointing NOW to possibility NEXT #G2Great
A8: LIFE IS ABOUT ITERATIONS, NOT MISTAKES!
A7 Number Talks & Accountable Talk practices are also great ways to show that questions and building on information shows that we are all learners and allows Ss to take on the role of coaching & conferring with structure & guidance, of course! #G2Great
A8 We need to help turn obstacles, failure, feelings of disappointment into learning. With trust, we are able to find words and support to help students want to be better, to seek help. With love and care, kids know they matter and trust us. Do all we can for kids. #g2great
A7: Promote student work in your classroom by using it as a model in your lessons. This will teach kids to look to their peers for help and treat them as experts. #g2great
A8: If we think of the assessment as the MOMENT, then we can look at MOMENT(Umm) as the reflection piece. In trip to the balcony, we move away from the time we failed to the time we flew. Basic theme of @dsantat's AFTER THE FALL. Make it a mentor text in the classroom. #g2great
Agree! Thatās how we grow. The wonder of teaching us never arriving but always continuing the learning journey! Our colleagues at school and social media deepen our practice. #g2great
A8 Stop brushing off when students reveal fear of failure and embarrassment. Listen. Normalize feelings. Confer about strategies. Partner. Kids want to succeed. Sometimes itās just scary. For me too!!! #g2great
LOVE THIS...answer a question with a question..."What do YOU think you know?" or something along those lines. Same advice for Ss helping their peers. Ask them what they already know and what they think they need to do to get there...Illuminate their inner knowledge #G2Great
A8: Teach how to view setbacks as opportunities for learning. Instead of settling into disappointment, ask yourself: What can I learn from this? How can I do this differently next time? What's my first step to improve? And practice what you preach! #g2great
Wait until youāre my age. You donāt even realize what you did to embarrass yourself in the first place. Youāre protected by embarrassment oblivious syndrome š #G2Great
