Q1: Coming up Welcome everyone.
I recognize your . Brandman Alum in the house!
Q1: How would you define a non traditional student? Remember to include the hashtag in your responses.
A1: Depends on context. In elementary world I would say its a student who does not thrive in traditional environment.
A1 A non trad ss is a 1 who doesn't "play" school like everyone else.
Hi, John from St. Clair. Retired Principal and part-time dean of students at St. Marys school
A1 I don't think there ever was a traditional student. We treated most Ss that way in the past, but now we see individuals.
A1: I think more students than not are 'non-traditional'. Home situations more varied than ever, abilities vary greatly
A1: I would say the non-tradition student needs something more to stimulate their academic capabilities
A1: Ss that have to work to support family over night shift.
A1: a S who's home issues greatly impact their school life - working before/after school to help family
A1: I would argue that most Ss are non trad these days. Trad instruction needs to adjust.
A1: With today's emphasis on personalized learning and small groups, I don't really know if there is a traditional student.
A1) Non-trad. S: those who aren't prepared to learn the way Ts teach. With an emphasis on S-driven classrooms, that label dies.
A1 I do believe all kids have 4 elemental needs that are met by providing leadership, love, laughter, & learning in balance.
A1: many students also have different natural built in abilities and mindsets than those of the 'traditional' paradigm of an S
A1. A non-traditional student happens with each one of us depending on the many variables of a day
A1 if we are developing learning personal to the student, all students are non-traditional
Q2: How do we change the classroom to serve these Ss?
A1 Even our advanced, "traditional" Ss have needs going unmet. They excel but too often without passion or true purpose.
maybe the real question is "what is a traditional student?"
A1 non traditional Ss are going to become the norm- changes in the world create Ss who don't learn in yesterday's schools
A2: willingness to be flexible to let non-trad students show us their learning in different ways. Non-trad is fine if it works!
A2. We personalize their learning to meet their needs. Making sure we remember the whole child and know them as learners
A2: Let go of traditional, conveyor belt school. One size does not fit all. Let go of task-based grades.
A2: Differentiation of instruction..... There is no "traditional" ... Teach the individual learner
A2) Give Ss a & rubric for expectations, then a collection of learning activities. Ss choose how to learn; they sched time.
A1 no Ss should fall into a category of traditional- or they will not be prepared for what comes next
Flexibility I have student this year that are extremely tactile. I moved to more hands on to help.
A2 multiple seating option with free creation activities. Lots of movement between activities https://t.co/DRINQp7MKn
A2 Develop critical thinkers who know how to ask questions to build knowledge, not just answer them
A2: Give Ss choice in how they demonstrate what they have learned. Choice is EVERYTHING.
A2: PL is a great way to reach/teach the Non-Traditional Ss
A2: evaluate each S needs and find ways to enhance how the way they learn; use tech to expand their learning needs
Bode has the right answer
Funny thing is, I thought you had the right answer... TACOS!!!
Ts need a smorgasbord of methods, assessment choices, learning opportunities, and environments to meet all needs
A2 Depends on which specific need you're addressing: social, emotional, soulful or academic learning. https://t.co/Emx8JD2OTB
Q2: How do we change the classroom to serve these Ss?
Multiple learning opportunities including genius hours, project based learning, peer learning.
Very powerful when we give them choice instead of "Everyone will create a 6 slide PPT blah blah blah..."
A2: Offering options and choices, let students take responsibility for learning, self-assess
Q3: With class loads of 25-30+ Ss per class & 150 per day & state testing stds & more T paperwork how do you diff or indivualize
A2 Ts must be freed up to coach each student at their level and pace rather than lecture material in sit and get-one size model
A1. Someone who takes a different path towards their education
Hi! Adam from VaBeach, K-12 Principal
What if the Ss doesn't choose or take responsibility?
Q3: Going 1:1 this year means ability to use hybrid learning model, lots of differentiation
A3: that is the million dollar question! I say we don't. Its time for a revolt!
Don't have a perfect answer, but seeking ways to connect & motivate. What interests them? What inspires them?
An ancient tool educators used when they thought it would engage Ss through direct instruction
A3: I think successful differentiation for me has come from knowing Ss as well as possible. That knowledge lets me adjust 4 them
A3. Let the students have the responsibility and control of their learning
A3 flip or blend- free yourself to step away from of room. Record your lessons once-clone yourself
A3 Allow Ss to make meaning thru choice, creativity, collaboration, controversy, commentary, construction, critical thinking...
A3: I'm working on a solution for that. Competency-based, personalized Learning is key.
a3 freedom for students to pick topic that relates to what you are learning with targeted questions
I would love to see more on this! I am trying something like this...
A3: tough ? - encourage to Ss to collaborate and discuss their learning w/ one another
a3: So difficult, it's about being honest and asking for help when needed to get that 1:! support
A3) When you have , choosing learning activities, scheduling their own time; the # of Ss isn't a big issue.
And when you've been asked the same Q twice, stop & record the explanation or have Ss post the explanation
I agree! Content & instruction can be differentiated but let Ss explore & make meaning. https://t.co/bDB1nqpztA
Don't have a perfect answer, but seeking ways to connect & motivate. What interests them? What inspires them?
A3: being open to students' ideas about their own learning also. Sometimes their ideas are better than mine and that's AWESOME
Join in 30 minutes when hosts on VR/AR and Emerging Tech in the Classroom!
A3: Self-directed learning through hyperdocs allows Ss to work independently and Ts to pull Ss who need more support.
The more they own the learning process, the more they own the learning & content.
A3 It differs each year. SS change so I try to adjust. Trying and PBL for , TGfU in
Can you tell us more? What level ? https://t.co/Iy9nDfYhay
A3: I'm working on a solution for that. Competency-based, personalized Learning is key.
Me too (SS), but not sure what it really looks like in the classroom.
Thanks, Jill. Glad you like it. Appreciate the shout-out. :-)
Great post! This builds time for remediation., extensions, interventions.. https://t.co/8TgY9WPWNO
A3 flip or blend- free yourself to step away from of room. Record your lessons once-clone yourself
Still ideating on it but I think its a direction we need to go. Learning through hyperdocs and PBL.
A3 I still believe in the teacher as the leader & guide who takes Ss on fascinating journeys. Inspire! https://t.co/apEei8uElb
Like the way ss can document learning and use blog to reflect on learning.
Q4: The non trad Ss may not have the energy or motivation to choose or be self directed. How do we help them?
A4: Relationship is key. Build the connection to find out what motivates them. There's a key. Find it.
that is an impressive model
A4. Seek out what does engage them and wrap the content around it
A4: besides building a relationship with these Ss reach out to their friends to motivate them
A4. Find their "hot button'. Have peers encourage them, accentuate their strengths!
A4 I think it depends on the extent of the self-direction. All Ss need strong foundations, scaffolds, & strategies to then fly.
a4 I place them with my highly motivated students in hopes of them rubbing off on them while asking questions on their interests
A4. I have not found an unmotivated student but rather educators that haven't built relationships to get know the student
A4 choice and voice can motivate non traditional learners. Provide time for maker space, genius hour-less sit and get learning
A4: By showing them thru actions on daily basis that you're not just saying you want them to grow, also doing all u can 2 help
A4) What drives Ss? posits: Purpose, Mastery, Autonomy.
Glasser: belonging, freedom, power, fun (engagement)
Agreed. The relationship makes a huge difference. When you know you're Ss you build respect that goes both ways
I have. Student had the ability but only passed 1 class in 3 yrs. I had him 2 yrs in a row. Tried everything
A4: I always tell my practicum Ss to know their Ss. Build relationships & differentiate for interest
A4: If you can get someone to buy in to your culture as a leader, you can help them be as good as possible, traditional or not
In MI up to 40% of my eval will be based on test scores.
Part of the problem with our current time-bound system. Some non trad Ss can't handle current system.
Seek out what engages Ts too. Our passion can be contagious.
OMG...that's so not ok. I'm so sorry.
I understand but we also need to do whats best for Ss & the Ss will do better for teachers if relationships are built
Terrible! How else can we say "teaching to the test is more important than building lifelong learners"
A4) 6th gr ELA teacher let Ss pick an info text book & choose an audience to write to. for all; people wrote back!
It really should be illegal. Its unethical and illogical.
And another 40% on S feedback?
Why do we continue down the same road. Why can't we make necessary changes to education?
he asked, thinking wishfully.
Q5: How can we change our little part of the world and the 45-60 minutes we have our Ss non trad or trad?
A4) I want Ss to do well on tests AND be lifelong learners. If you are motivated and learn well, the tests are easy and fun!
Im choosing the road less traveled. Be the change. I will not do what is not good for kids
probably because change is scary and takes time.
Any ideas or resources. I'm looking PBL resources and work done at elem level started the work in VT https://t.co/jdZ4KuwjUI
Still ideating on it but I think its a direction we need to go. Learning through hyperdocs and PBL.
A5: Focus on your sphere of control and your sphere of influence.
more long term projects that can use little bits of each class
A5: by never living the life unexamined in the classroom. I reflect&try to improve, sets good example for Ss& makes me better
A5 a lesson where the Ss ask more questions than the Teacher
A5 Balance what is core & what is common with creativity & choice because all kids really do need both sides in balance.
A5: also by finding as many ways as possible to interject moments of human kindness and decency into your 45-90 mins 👌🏻
a5 let the students lead and facilitate their discussion. They will learn more from each other then a teacher talking at them
A5: Reflect, research, ideate, innovate, take risks for students.
Expand the classroom. Classroom Twitter chat. 😍
A5: Encouraging Ts to use more Inquiry Based Learning and allowing tech team Ss to take leadership roles
A5. 45 to 60 minutes of never ending pursuit of meeting the needs of each S
A5: reflect after each class to focus on the Ss and how they are teaching you as a T
A5 steal some teach from another teacher by combine projects
Never heard of it. Will check it out. Thanks for sharing!
A5 If we strive to equally capture our Ss' hearts, spirits, minds, & manners, that is plenty & kids will thrive.
A6: nope! But, I am bookmarking it for later! I always love the ideas posted on here
Q7: Jill's topic for next week with tweet out soon. What takeaway(s) do you have tonight?
I am trying that this yr in class.
Inquiry is so empowering, Sean! https://t.co/KlzEF8UTto
A5: Encouraging Ts to use more Inquiry Based Learning and allowing tech team Ss to take leadership roles
Join next wk. Sun 8:00. Topic How do we educate our ‘Forgotten Students’? (Alt Ed, Low SES etc) w/ guest host & I
I'm still trying to figure out how to play Rugby in the computer lab
A7. There are more options than ever to reach all students. But, the most important thing is to care as a T and P support.
Working on as we speak for & if anyone is interested in collaborating. https://t.co/MsDbUmoH6J
A5: Encouraging Ts to use more Inquiry Based Learning and allowing tech team Ss to take leadership roles
