A1. Add collaboration and choice. Does every S have to answer every question?
Discuss all.
Choose 2 to respond in depth.
Padlet, Flip grid, Google Doc.
@KellenPluntke#BowTieBoys#G2Great
A1 Collaboration can turn read & respond style questions into an engaging peer supported experience IF (and only if) we make room for kids to bring their thinking to the table #G2Great
A1: My read and respond is table talk or class conversations. At this point in the year I don't think my 8th graders remember how a short answer response reading activity would even work haha #G2Great
A1 I feel this activity is often individual, but grouping up and sharing different sides can definitely turn this into a collaborative opportunity #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A1. "Write Around: Put ? in middle of chart paper. Groups of 4. Ss respond to ? Put gr.# for accountability. Each chart paper different 'writer'." or Google Docs, etc.
@KellenPluntke#BowTieBoys#G2Great
A1: It is important to have students interact with each other on these types of questions. Whether it is just the sharing of individual ideas after some time or collaboratively coming up with solutions or viewpoints.#G2Great#BowTieBoys
A1 allowing Ss to pull out and create their own questions from what they’re wondering about. Share with each other and have meaningful conversation not contrived question&answer sessions #BowTieBoys#g2great
Just imagine high school students as educational advocates folks. Remarkable young men and when they let us see our teaching through THEIR eyes, it sharpens our view from the outside in rather than simply inside out (us). Great merger #G2Great
A1 I would like to think that we would ENCOURAGE student generated questions even within that process. One questions SHOULD become a stepping stone to another. We have that freedom. #G2Great
A1 the classic read and respond style questions could b followed by a brief discussion with tablemates just to get ideas flowing and to build off one another. #g2great#BowTieBoys
I love your response to have the students actually have to come up their own questions, certainly sounds better than standard read and response! #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A1: Having grand conversations as a whole class or in small groups. Talking to others in response to what we read is more meaningful interacting with others. The level of thinking can build exponentially off other people’s thinking and sharing. #G2Great
Yes Christian. Each of us brings a unique perspective to the thinking table and when we bring that uniqueness together we benefit in ways we could never have imagined! #G2Great
I agree! Letting the students share their views are very important to enhance their cooperation skills while also giving them a chance to explore more views. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A1 I teach my little guys how to talk to each other about books. Most importantly that there isn't always one right answer. We want to hear everyone's interpretation. #g2great
A1 Providing options for collab is a start. Doesn't always need to be done together but shared response slides and or padlet can help peers formulate deeper thoughts #g2great

I really like that idea. When discussions or thoughts are forced students talk just to check off a list:
Did I like it?
What was the theme?
... and then they're done #g2great#BowTieBoys
A1 Jigsaw groups is one of my long-time favorite structures. We could form groups for kids to become the EXPERT of a Q (PLUS) and then share their thinking/new Qs with the group. #G2Great
Key words that lead to respectful conversations Ryan:
discussion
talk through
different solutions/viewpoints
Not interrogations but two-way DIALOGUE - so important #G2Great
Discussions are such fantastic ways to share information while also letting the students to talk through different solutions and viewpoints.#G2Great#BowTieBoys
(Susan from Cincinnati — late!) Love the use of padlet and other writing tools. Some students may contribute their best thinking through writing. #g2great

Great point! This is how my son (10th grade) does many projects/presentations. This is how I work with colleauges too. This is 21st Century life. #g2great
I love the approach of whole class conversations! They always get a great blend of ideas from the whole class. They also make students feel that their ideas are more welcome in the class.
#G2Great
What especially powerful is when we maintain the flexibility to let the conversations take on a life of their own (just a conversations are meant to do) #G2Great

A2 That’s inevitable if we do collaboration for the sheer sake of collaboration. It has to be done with a specific purpose in mind and fit those students & that situation #G2Great
A2.Collaboration feels contrived when it's low level work.
Collaboration for the sake of collaboration instead of when TALK benefits the LEARNING. Adds depth, explores new ideas, instead of regurgitating facts.
@spencerrhill99#BowTieBoys#G2Great
A2: Absolutely. I think we often try to get collaboration going because it is the "right thing" and shoving it in without a purpose or knowing a why for the task. Turns into work just to collaborate which I think goes against the purpose. #G2Great

A2 sure, and I think it’s the Ts job to frame it in a way that makes collaboration authentic and pivotal to the success in classrooms. Collaboration should be how we are getting things done. It’s efficient, effective, and fun. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A2: When the assignment isn't relevant or authentic (in which case, all learning is contrived). All lessons/projects/experiences need to identify a connection. #G2Great
A 2 Collaboration feels contrived when students discuss pre-made questions that focus on recall. Collaborate with PBL and inquiry. Should be a problem solving experience that involves deep thinking. #G2Great#bowtieboys
I don’t understand why we wouldn’t want student instructional conversations to replicate the real life conversations we have when discussion important topics. #G2Great

A1:There are definitely times where collaboration has a fake vibe. Many times busy work is used for the sole purpose of collaboration. This is not a good place to use collaboration seeing as it builds no skills,.#G2Great#BowTieBoys
A2 If you force students to collaborate and there isn't any depth to the conversation then that's a problem. If you ask low level questions there isn't much conversation needed. #g2great
During warm ups at the beginning of class, teachers often let students work together or encourage it. I feel like warm ups are better done individually to get each student to get their brains working and not piggy back off their peers. #G2Great#BowTieBoys

A2: Just like with tech integration, it is imperative that we are utilizing group work because the topic requires collaboration (and collaboration would be found in the real world) and not just because we are "randomly slipping in some small group purposeful talk/TPS." #G2Great
A1: It is not often, but I do sometimes don't understand the purpose behind working on things with other students. Group work should not just be there for the sake of switching it up but to allow for unique perspectives. #G2Great#BowTieBoys

A2. When doing collaborative work, the students need to be engaged. Otherwise the students do not get as much out of the experience #LitBankStreet#G2Great
I fully appreciate the truth in your statement. Students can always spot pointless work when it appears, so having conversations that build TOWARD something new are always appreciated. #G2Great
I agree. One thing I love is when small student groups are used to solve real world problems. This leads to the comprehension and collaboration of many students while analyzing a problem and coming up with a solution. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A2 It will most likely feel contrived if we aren’t clear why we are doing it and what our expectations are. We can just say go collaborate and expect a positive outcome. #G2Great

A2 Because collab. has become more popular in teaching, I've had lots of Tts throw together a "group activity" right as the assist,t prin. walks in. it's more frustrating to have to organize a group effort to perform a simple task when you can do it yourself #g2great#BowTieBoys
Exactly. Whenever we are forced to work in class I never get much out of it. It's when the students are interested in the topic when the real magic happens #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A1 One fav engagement of mine is Written Conversations. With little kids, it's like texting back & forth. For my K/1's, I can sometimes have several conversations going w/ several kids at once. I imagine older students could keep them coming fast & furious! #G2great#BowtieBoys

A2. Always felt the turn and talk/table talk prompts in many basal/prepackaged curriculum were add ons to check the collab box. Ts can be guilty of same #g2great
could not agree more, giving students time to warm up to each other and the content before you force collaboration is very important #G2Great#BowTieBoys
I believe that there needs to be a mix so the Ss don't get bored. Also, in the working world there will be a mix of individual and group work. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A3 Vary the size of groups according to Sts’ needs & then gradually increase the group size. We can stay within a comfort zone & gradually raise the level of challenge. #G2Great
A3. Pair Share, Student can share out what partner said. Flip grid to report out. S can write 1st, share w/ small group 2nd, then share w/ class. Listen to ideas from other classes/ phone a friend!

A 3 Always start with partner discussionsas these encourage both to share. Then, partners join another pair to share and question and discuss further! Safer to start with 2 students discussing. #g2great#bowtieboys
A3: Most of my work is done in small groups. When we move to larger groups it is by volunteer who shares. I circulate during the small groups and ask if there is a point that I would like shared whole class if Ss are will to share. If not I share on their behalf. #g2great
A3. Small Group: Write Around on Paper. Collect ideas from everyone. When report out to class, can use other group members.
@Joe_OSuch.
#BowTieBoys#G2Great
A3 smaller groups definitely help support our #introvert Ss. They don’t have the pressures of a huge room or having to think on their toes. In small group they can have time to think carefully and respond intently #g2great#BowTieBoys
A3: Small groups allow the shyer individuals to feel like they have more of a say where as in large groups have less opportunities for the shy Ss to speak. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
absolutely Paula but I think we can also teach students how to support that kind of narrow talk such as, “Tell me more” give me an example (or even creating a springboard to deeper thinking. #G2Great

A3 I like to have small groups share their work on a large piece of chart paper. Everyone in the group has their own color marker so I can see that everyone is sharing, but only one person is the presenter/speaker for the group. That way even the shy kids get a voice #g2great
A3 small groups, especially recurring ones, tend to bond and feel comfortable with one another, leaving ANY student confident in sharing their ideas #g2great#BowTieBoys

That’s why professional development on this topic is critical. I think that many teachers don’t recognize how clarity can make or break what happens next. #G2Great
A3. I try to build in a lot of different occasions where students can try out, develop ideas: partner work, silent conversations, art conversations, small group, triads. Everybody Writes often works well. #G2Great
A3: Allowing student to talk to a peer to generate ideas, allowing think and processing time, giving wait time and being patient, sharing what your partner said, allowing the quiet student to start off the conversation first to lead where they would like it to go. #G2Great
A3 Effective communication is a learned skill just like anything else. We want to model what that looks like, sounds like, and feels like & support those with less experience. #G2Great
Me being a "closed up" person knows how it feels to talk in front of a class and it can be scary. But talking in small groups allows me to relax and really share my ideas without getting nervous #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A3: Flexible groups so that students who can be intimidated in the larger groups can feel more comfortable with the size/makeup of the group. Also allow students choice in how they respond, with talk, writing, art, through technology. #G2Great
I do love the marker idea. This way it is evident who is contributing compared to who is not. I also feel like the opportunity to share should rotate every time so the shyer kids can also get practice oral presenting as it is a major live skill. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
We have to teach talk rituals so that students know what tis looks like and sounds like. I think the fishbowl strategy is perfect for this so we can see 3-5 minute demonstrations and then discuss what we saw/heard. #G2Great
A3 Giving voice to those Ss who may not feel comfortable participating is so important. We conference with Ss at times to provide support and build confidence so that those Ss will take the risk and roar! Also an expectation that all Ss will be respectful! #BowTieBoys#G2Great
A3: In my MS & HS classes we always jump right into full class discussion from day one. I know, sounds scary - but kids know it is ALWAYS okay to pass - and some do at first. But then, when they see there is no judgement, they join in quickly! Create safe environments #G2Great

As I’m watching #BowTieBoys brilliance flash across my screen, I am wondering why we don’t ask students what works for them more often. I’ve heard kids even in kindergarten who can demystify the thinking process is such powerful ways. #G2Great
A3 Small group collaboration can be challenging for some kids so I think that FIRST we create a safe space so that collaborations rise from those foundational experiences. #G2Great
A3 I like to have small groups share their work on a large piece of chart paper. Everyone in the group has their own color marker so I can see that everyone is sharing, but only one person is the presenter/speaker for the group. That way even the shy kids get a voice #g2great
Yes Ryan, the speaker position must rotate. When I have really shy students who get severe anxiety about sharing I allow them to either practice a little or I allow them to video tape their response using @flipgrid#g2great
A3. Years ago I used NiceNet as a way for students to talk before coming to class. There’s so many ways to engage in asynchronous chats. These warm ups help voices to emerge. Choice to participate matters. #G2Great
A3 I like using all four domains of language: write your thoughts, read what your group members wrote, discuss it as a small group, speak it out to the bigger group as a group. Strength in numbers can build confidence #g2great
A2 I believe students of all ages want to invest in things that make a difference in the world. If the lessons don't matter, the kids probably won't care. #G2great#BowTieBoys

A4 The whole point of group work is to give students ownership of the experience. That doesn’t happen by chance by with intentionally planting collaboration seeds. #G2Great
A4 As with almost anything there is certainly a line one has to draw. For me this is when the thoughtful discussion decays into standard conversation #G2Great#BowTieBoys
We can multiply that old saying "two brains are better than one” exponentially. Every new opportunity builds on, reinforces and extends our initial thinking in such powerful ways #G2Great
A4: As long as the Ss are working towards a relevant goal that they are passionate about. The line is when the Ss lose inspiration and are unengaged. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A4 in my professional life I enjoy group work so for my Ss I want them to be able to do group work whenever it helps their learning. I would draw a line when it’s not legal - like on a high stakes state assessment. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A4 No artificial limits. It’s the work that defines the need for collaboration. In a student-centered class students lead the way for a need to discuss and collaborate. #g2great#bowtieboys
A4. Quality small group effectiveness depends on having a task that needs everyone to be productive. Not low level, not worksheet, not Q & A. Allow Voice & Choice - time to think, process & learn! Not always "assigned roles/tasks"!
@CSporre#BowTieBoys#G2Great

Absolutely Kellen because real life is where kids are going to have to apply those conversations. There should be a thread between the two so it’s less a school thing and more a life thing - the ultimate goal #G2Great
I do love the marker idea. This way it is evident who is contributing compared to who is not. I also feel like the opportunity to share should rotate every time so the shyer kids can also get practice oral presenting as it is a major live skill. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
Precisely. As teachers we need to collaborate ALL the time. In fact, so does basically EVERY profession. Best to teach the kiddos these skills now! Just wrote a blog on it: https://t.co/GbekRVuQyu#G2Great
A4 For group work to be effective there has to be protocols in place and it must be aligned to learning targets. Again, you can't you do group work for no reason. Group work teaches so many important life skills: collaboration, empathy, listening, etc #g2great
A3: I love how small groups are a flexible construct that can be utilized across the day and subject area. I love using a fishbowl structure with a small "inner circle" and "outer circle" of learners who can learn from each other in mutually beneficial ways. #G2Great
Yes, I hate when we have time limits, page limits, partner limits, etc. Why? If it doesn't exist in the real world, why does it exist in our classroom. #G2Great
The most amazing things about learners at ALL ages is their unique way of thinking so we have to celebrate and accommodate that uniqueness. We never know what we see as “different” that will take them far some day! #G2Great

A4 I think the real challenge of group work is knowing when to use it. I think its ability to build ideas together is invaluable, but sometimes it' easier to work alone. #g2great#BowTieBoys

A4 PURPOSE is the line. Unless we have a clear WHY in mind, the effectiveness of small group work (or lack thereof) is already decided. And kids have to know that WHY too! #G2Great
A4. Small group work is effective, especially when students have been taught to lead their own learning. Teachers step back and facilitate the class and this allows students to talk amongst themselves, negotiate and question each other #litbankstreet#G2Great
Just to be sure our #G2great friends know this, every single question was crafted by our #BowTieBoys. Pretty amazing don’t you think & illustrates the power of trusting students to generate their own questions! Just thinking out loud! #G2Great

A5. Group members vary. Sometimes choice by Ss, sometimes by T, or by random drawing. Provide opportunities for Ss to work with everyone in the class!
@RBeaver05#BowTieBoys#G2Great
A5 Just as in the real world, the goal of classroom work is to create a wide range of grouping experiences that engage Sts w/learners who may not learn in the same way (like life). #G2Great
A4 I think there is sometimes a limit when we need to afford Ss the opportunity to show what they know and are able to do independently. We empower kids when we trust them to strike out on their own. We also collect valuable data on what needs remediation. #G2Great
Agreed, yet some might want to try their ideas out on the small group and then revise/clarify their thinking before sharing. Also the group might want to combine ideas to create a really powerful thought that includes all voices. #g2great
I like the idea of writing thoughts down first. It really helps to collect our thoughts before sharing, taking away some of the stress. I would actually suggest jumping straight to the large groups. Students may feel that it is unnecessary to repeat themselves.
A 5 I’m wary of choosing to work with friends as when one or more students aren’t chosen it’s painful, heartbreaking to me and the students. I explain that groups change often and this gives students opportunities to work with most in the class. #g2great#bowtieboys
So many amazing options but we can’t benefit from them (kids and teachers) unless we are willing to make room and time to commit to these incredible opportunities. #G2Great

I think that spreading out the work and allowing the Ss to work with almost everyone in the class over the course of a year or semester is very important. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A4. I'd say the line for group work shifts depending on the needs of students and the nature of the work. A hammer is a great tool but not the only one in the box. Same for group work. Know when it's needed and pick other tools when not #g2great
A5 I think mixing up the groups as the year goes on would be one such method. Toward the beginning of the year some Ss might be hesitant, but as the year progresses, definently mix up the groups #G2Great#BowTieBoys

It goes without saying but I’ll say it anyway, we can’t expect students to open their mouths if we as teachers aren’t willing to close ours. That’s sometimes the hardest thing to remember! #G2Great
Wow, Laura - didn't even think about the heartbreak and you are so right. I always go to lack of productivity or difficulty in having "real conversations" that you can have easier with "strangers." Always looking at a kids' heart! #G2Great
A4 Agree, Mary. We must start with WHY, figure out the HOW, then decide on the WHAT. Too often we start with the what, the resources and lose focus on the reason we are in the classroom, the students! #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A4 PURPOSE is the line. Unless we have a clear WHY in mind, the effectiveness of small group work (or lack thereof) is already decided. And kids have to know that WHY too! #G2Great
A5 We group students differently all the time. Sometimes we do 4 corners to group, sometimes we group by a anonymous vote, and sometimes students choose #g2great
A5: I think students should be paired up with new people every so often to get new Ideas and opinions. This will also prepare students to work with people they don't know #G2Great
Yes we have a tendency to like to stay in our collaboration comfort zone TQ but in the real world we don’t get to pick our partners. This is a real life skill if ever there was one! #G2Great

A5: Mob mentality is easy when working with friends. Sometimes it is easy to allow values/ethics to slip to the wayside when outvoted by friends. I have kids experiment with working with EVERY kid in the class over the year. #G2Great
A5: I think this is something that is established by creating a positive classroom community based on trust and respect. We learn from those who are different from us. My students might not be best friends with group members, but they must respect them. #G2Great
A5 Honestly, group work is already such an important skill, but to really add more real-life skills: use computers or pick random groups. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A5 Groups need to be flexible, fluid and dynamic and the structure can also change as the needs of students change. As students grow, so should the grouping designs. #G2Great
I ask Ss, 9th graders, to pick a Romeo and Juliet partner - boy, girl - this really helps to break things up sometimes #G2great the Ss seem to enjoy it and if they can't pick a partner, I help them.
A5 Everyone has something that they are really great at and you will never know what others can teach you if you don't take the opportunity to find out! #g2great
And if OUR WHY is fuzzy how can we possible impart that to kids. We surely don’t want to keep them in the dark since it is the fuel that drive the collaboration bus #G2Great
A4 Agree, Mary.
#G2Great
Agree. Some of the best thinking is done when you struggle a bit on your own. Learning to be alone with your thoughts for a while can be a beautiful thing. #g2great
It is important to let Ss know that your putting them into groups without their friends because thats how it will be in the real-world. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A5: It is important to notice who isn’t picked to be in a group and build community and empathy. Sometimes teacher made groups introduce students to recognize talents of others that they might not typically work together. #G2Great
A5: I think students should be paired up with new people every so often to get new Ideas and opinions. This will also prepare students to work with people they don't know #G2Great
A5 This is a great question and so hard in the primary grades where Ss are figuring out the whole friend thing. Setting expectations and structures from the beginning helps. #BowTieBoys#G2Great
A5 If we create a positive learning environment then our groping experiences are more likely to have a WE feel. This means that e build relationships both within and beyond groups. #G2Great
LOVE that point Ryan. We can’t expect students to be respectful to peers if we don’t spark that flame n the first place. It has to begin there and then it’s the best kind of ripple effect. #G2Great
A4 Some of our best moments are kids inspiring others' work thru sharing their own. In my inquiry cls, we lrn collaboratively. Until kids have a chance to quietly try a few things out on their own tho, they won't feel the satisfaction of lrng it themselves.#BowTieBoys#G2great

It goes without saying but I’ll say it anyway, we can’t expect students to open their mouths if we as teachers aren’t willing to close ours. That’s sometimes the hardest thing to remember! #G2Great
A5: Fran, I also use “talk alike groups” including putting quieter students together from time to time, letting them support and scaffold each other. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A5. Group members vary. Sometimes choice by Ss, sometimes by T, or by random drawing. Provide opportunities for Ss to work with everyone in the class!
@RBeaver05#BowTieBoys#G2Great
A5 I love what @smokeylit@Stephharvey49 shared in their book, Comprehension and Collaboration--that the first weeks of school kids should be in groups with every combination possible. This helps Ss to feel responsible for and a part of their learning community. #G2Great
We see this all the time. It does hurt a little to be the one not chosen for collaboration. Another idea I heard tonight that I think works well is the random selection for collaboration.
#G2Great
A6. Lone workers: seek to understand why. (learning issues, control, absenteeism, etc.) Will S work w/ partner if chooses own partner? Ask S to come up with ways to demonstrate collaboration w/o group work. Convince me!
@ConnorGrady11#BowTieBoys#G2Great
A6 We can start small. Making turn and talk with a partner a regular part of our learning day will create a ritual for brief collaborations in smaller settings. #G2Great
A5: I like to start all collaborations with "speed partnering" Ss have an opportunity to meet with different learners over the course of a couple of weeks. Layer in reflection on the kinds of collaborations that work, and planners to help guide the way = success! #G2great
A5 Also love to have Ss write who they would prefer to work with based on specific learning goals/needs. Expands views of peers. Need a techy person? . (Friends don't count.)
@MisterAMisterA#BowTieBoys#g2great
A5: Mob mentality is easy when working with friends. Sometimes it is easy to allow values/ethics to slip to the wayside when outvoted by friends. I have kids experiment with working with EVERY kid in the class over the year. #G2Great
Absolutely! We have to create a safe space where everyone is respected. Then it doesn't matter who we're paired with. It starts with building a culture of respect and empathy. #g2great
A5 Getting the opportunity to work with a variety of peers give Ss the chance to practice civility (can we all agree that some in our current culture/government missed that lesson?) even when they are very different from those they work alongside. #lifeskills#g2great
A6 I have an internal struggle with this. If a Ss works best alone and wants to shouldn’t we let that happen? Maybe never stop offering but don’t force. I would hate to constantly be forced to work alone. #g2great#bowtieboys
A6: It is important to inspire the students. Ss who like working alone either are super hard workers or uninspired kids. Inspiring everyone will solve these problems because everyone will be inspired. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A6 We have to know our students. Relationships are key. Some students have some real problems socializing and if we know this then we can help the students overcome their fears/anxities. We have to work together with our students #g2great
A6: I think it is important to let students work alone if it is how they learn best. But I think students should always be encouraged to collaborate especially when learning new topics. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A6: Some students work better alone, so offering them choice and flexibility in ways to collaborate is important. It is important to understand the why behind it - it may be valid. #G2Great
A6 This seems harsh, but giving them too much work to do alone and assigning them a partner will cause them to eventually reach out to their partner #g2great#BowTieBoys
A 6 Never force Ss to join—this builds anxiety and stress. Creating a safe environment and pointing out there are many Interpretations helps. Let students observe from sidelines; have discussions with students to encourage them to try. Be sensitive to fears.#g2great#bowtieboys
A5: I like to start all collaborations with "speed partnering" Ss have an opportunity to meet with different learners over the course of a couple of weeks. Layer in reflection on the kinds of collaborations that work, and planners to help guide the way = success! #G2great
A6: I think figuring out why the student resists group work. Is it fear of sharing ideas in front of others? Or difficulties compromising or dealing with frustration that comes along with collaboration. Once you know, help students problem solve. #G2Great
A6 Peer collaboration is an key component of the learning process we need to encourage, but we also need to respect that there are times when learning alone is desirable. #G2Great
A6 We have a couple of Ss who refuse to work with grade level peers. We set up peer mentors with younger grades. These Ss will collab in these communities. Hope with time it translates to grade level. Love to hear other ideas! #BowTieBoys#G2Great
I think it’s what you and I always talk about, JD! Everyone needs “comfort” and “stretch” situations. We need times to work in our comfort zone and times to learn to work in new ways. #g2great
A6 I have an internal struggle with this. If a Ss works best alone and wants to shouldn’t we let that happen? Maybe never stop offering but don’t force. I would hate to constantly be forced to work alone. #g2great#bowtieboys
A6 That's happened this year in a class where I collaborate with the T. I've heard the T tell a particular S, "I know that you prefer to work alone and you've done that a lot lately. Today you'll need to join a group so they get a chance to learn from you & vice versa #G2Great
I see where you are coming from. As a student who once was afraid to speak at all in class believe me, it's all about that first step. Without being forced to speak, I would have never opened up.
#G2Great#BowTieBoys
It's hard to say what the right answer is here. It depends on the student and the relationship. Although, I agree forcing a student to work in a particular way is not the path forward. #G2Great Good things to think on.
It is important to know which it is before Ts try to fix the problem. Teachers fixing the wrong problem can cause frustration with students. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A6 I don’t believe it’s an either/or proposition. Everyone learns in their own way and we want to stretch learners while also acknowledging that we have unique learning needs #G2Great

This definitely happens. I feel like if everyone is inspired then the slackers will "amp their game up" so this will hopefully eliminate the "burning"#G2Great#BowTieBoys
Here is the key. "Know your students". I know my students and who likes to work alone and who is better with a partner. Even if you know your Ss still keep offering them choices and options. #G2great
A7. Group work task is complex w/ many checkpoints: 1) see evidence that ALL participate (color of ink, handwriting, voice); 2) rubric created by Ss where rate each other's participation; 3) many checkpoints each day/through out the work.
@tq_Williamson#BowTieBoys#G2Great
A7 We set the stage for group work to ensure Sts know how to work in groups. Be very clear @ purpose, structure & content & don’t assume kids have these experiences #G2Great
A5: Sometimes we use a random cup. One of our 1st grd jobs is the random cup kid, who draws names for partnerships. Another way I build confidence in kids is thru creating a job wheel w/ jobs for all. We all contribute to our world. #G2great#BowTieBoys

Yes! Very possible. I can remember doing group work and hating it bc kids didn't care about their work like I did and I wanted to do the work by myself.#g2great
A6: Reading the book Quiet and it makes me really think about the perspective of an introvert - this should be considered when thinking about group work #G2Great
And if the end goal is success (and I can’t imagine it wouldn’t be) then we have to ensure that stress is not going to thwart that pathway. Love that Connor! #G2Great
A7 having specific tasks or a specific way of sharing out so everyone is responsible for working. If we hold Sa responsible for their learning it should happen. #g2great#bowtieboys
A7: Having each group member talk and learn together. Giving the opportunity or each student to create a way to demonstrate learning in own way. Working together as a group to complete different ideas to represent all the learning. #G2Great
A7: Once again, I feel like the inspiration of students is super important. Finding out what the Ss are interested in and integrate that into the group work. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A7. Assigning tasks to each student as well as seeing hand written notes that were take helps to make sure everyone does there part #Litbankstreet#G2Great
A6: Reading the book Quiet and it makes me really think about the perspective of an introvert - this should be considered when thinking about group work #G2Great
A7. Well before formal partner or group work happens, I have been negotiating the content and work with learners. They have shaped the work. This negotiating creates shared ownership. When issues arise, we have another opportunity to learn. #G2Great
To answer your question, in my shyer days I would choose a partner who would not force me to work with them at all. I feel that this is the case for many students who are afraid to work with others.
#G2Great
A7 You have to develop protocols early and review often. Then you have to monitor closely. If you notice that happening it's a great time to have a conversation with your Ss and teach them how to handle this conflict together. Eventually, Ss should handle it not the T. #g2great
A 7 As part of collaboration have students create a plan that shows how they will divide the work. Have students set deadlines for different elements and ask them self-evaluate progress and set goals! #g2great#bowtieboys
Fine line when differences occur.
Pacing
Thinking
Procrastinators
Learning to talk about issues / problems is critical!
So true, Ryan!
@RBeaver05#BowTieBoys#g2great
This definitely happens. I feel like if everyone is inspired then the slackers will "amp their game up" so this will hopefully eliminate the "burning"#G2Great#BowTieBoys
A7 We can start by allowing Sts to negotiate both the group goals and let them choose who will assume the primary role for those goals. Choice maximizes engagement/ownership! #G2Great
I was just thinking that this twitter chat is a perfect example of the kind of conversations we want to inspire. While #G2Great is much bigger warp speed scale the same idea of the kind of meandering of ideas/sharing is what we want. It’s amazing to sit back & soak it in #G2Great
A7 Starting in the primary with roles so each Ss has a task. Maintaining the expectation for participation as Ss grow. Also, remembering that there are times for Ss to be observers--just not all the time. #BowTieBoys#G2Great
A7: I think its a good idea to ask the students in the group about the work they have done. Not just on the day it is due but constant mini check-ins. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
I think Ss lead is always better than Ts lead but I guess it would depend on the Ss in the group and their needs. #g2great personally I would want my Ss to assign and then I would check in on progress.
A6. Sometimes the resistance has a reason. They've never learned how to share. So working w/ modeling for their partnership/group may be needed. #g2great
A7.sometimes it makes sense that one emerges and in doing so does more work than another. This is the basis of most relationships. Looking beyond a single situation helps. #G2Great
A7: Establishing protocols and expectations and revising these. Working well with others is hard and students need lots of practice, modeling, and feedback as well as time for self reflection #G2Great
A7 We can redefine “group work” as a way to respect unique difference. Some Sts are not as vocal or find writing a challenge but they will soar in doing other aspects of group work. #G2Great
A7: It is definitely a situation to be on the lookout for and proactively prevent. Group and individual planners go a long way toward enabling students to manage work load and find the tasks and roles that will allow them to be the most successful! #g2great
I have college students fill out a simple form that tells what they contributed and if they feel all members deserve the same grade. It becomes obvious if there was a problem. #g2great
A7: Teaching Ss first in partnerships and then having students work in groups. Teach conversation prompts and how to move a conversation. Coach in to Ss to move conversation. Share videos of Ss in group work - create self reflection rubrics #G2Great
Or in a different turn finding assignments with work that causes them to road block or dead end with out the help of others. Small level jigsawing for example. #g2great
A8. Classroom environment = tables, couches, seating for group work, partners, and individuals.
Lighting for work.
Power terminals for devices.
@MisterAMisterA#BowTieBoys#G2Great
A8 “Working together” assumes that we have created a respectful environment FIRST. Then we demonstrate that respect by engaging students in decision making. #G2Great
Your point about monitoring closely is well put. Students will pay attention to how much the teacher watches them and can pretend to work together. By monitoring CLOSELY, teachers can remove this altogether.
#G2Great
A6: I love getting to know students over lunch. I of course never force anyone to attend, but plenty have come on their own volition. A lot of times, these are the shy kids and it is a great way to get to know one another and get them more comfortable with class! #G2Great
A8: I wish my teachers would conference with me on what I am interested in to allow me to explore what I am interested in. This way, everyone would have different interests and could bring different views into the group. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
As important as “data” is, we cannot lose the child beneath the spreadsheet. We must stop talking numbers and start talking bout what we know about kids from the heart. No spreadsheet will EVER tell you who they are as learners! #DailyCAFE#G2Great
Wow! Great inspiration, Mary! Use Twitter as example of one type of face to face group interaction for conversations. Use the Wakelet of a chat to show students a type of conversation. #G2Great
I was just thinking that this twitter chat is a perfect example of the kind of conversations we want to inspire. While #G2Great is much bigger warp speed scale the same idea of the kind of meandering of ideas/sharing is what we want. It’s amazing to sit back & soak it in #G2Great
I wish my teachers would tell me the reason they are doing whatever assignment or work they are doing. When I know there is a reason behind it, and not just busy work, I am much more motivated to do the work. this is especially true id ti is something real-world based #G2Great

A8:I wish that my teachers would show what they expect from the class through straight discussion directly addressing the matter. Its always best to make sure the students have it crystal clear so that there is minimal confusion #G2Great
A8 I think that it's important to spend the beginning the year to set up and build a safe classroom environment that everyone can benefit from for the rest of the year #g2great#BowTieBoys
A8. I work with teachers, principals, and their students. Our work is most often about problem framing, problem solving. These stances shape relationships, work, and outcomes. #G2Great
A8: I wish all my teachers would always ask for feedback on their lessons so that we can together improve the learning experience and make a more effective lesson #G2Great#bowtieboys
A5 Skills sought by future employers: collaboration, problem-solving, reasoning. Many of those happen w/ Ss posing ?s, negotiating, brainstorming. Building positive relationships & great memories helps build trust so kids want to do this work together. #BowTieBoys#G2Great

A8 We start the year off with discussions about "the power of yet". I prove to them time and time again what they are capable of by letting them do the work. #g2great
A7: Just like in the real world, everyone should have a task. If the group work is authentic, they will. Create an environment where Ss trust each other. My Ss work in groups of 6 because there is so much to be done they appreciate the ability to delegate #G2Great
A8 Don’t wait for high expectation/authentic engagement to make its way into our teaching. Start as soon as kids enter the room & create an atmosphere where these lofty goals RESIDE on day 1! #G2Great
I would agree cause I know one of the most frequent questions by students is why are we doing this, and teachers should be able to answer that #G2Great#BowTieBoys

And those numbers, scores, levels, grades will almost inevitably cloud what could now about students if kids and not “data" were at the center #G2great
A8: Give students choice and let them know their voices matter. Get to know their interests, needs, and wants and let them be a part of establishing protocols #G2Great
Well said. As a student, it can sometimes seem that we are reduced to a letter on a sheet. Thank you both for bringing this up! @DrMaryHoward@MargaretMariel2#G2Great

A8 Student centered classrooms focused on high expectation & authentic engagement doesn’t happen by chance. WE must plant & nurture those seeds ALL YEAR LONG #G2Great
I love the way you say this like it is. I feel that we sometimes view engagement as an idealistic goal rather than something we can achieve daily as a team. #G2Great
