A1-Math is societal connected to high intelligence. If Ss have a moment where math makes them feel stupid, it can grow anxiety. #SwDMathChat
  • MrsNewell22 Oct 26 @ 9:08 PM EDT
A1: Math has historically been a performance subject instead of a learning subject. #SwDMathChat

  • RogoNic Oct 26 @ 9:11 PM EDT
A1 I think anxiety about maths is socially inherited. Parents pass it on, messages on tv etc. I taught adults w maths issues. #SwDMathChat

Let's start! Q1: Why does math, in particular, induce anxiety in so many students? (versus other subjects) #SwDMathChat
  • PanglossCritic Oct 26 @ 9:11 PM EDT
Timed tests (lack of speed = failure), cold calling, the objective nature of most math assessment- you're right or wrong. #SwDMathChat
    In reply to @jennifuhs4
  • jennalaib Oct 26 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A1: So many possible, intertwining causes! Some Ss seem to think math is made up of "facts" and that those that know them...+ #SwDMathChat

A2: My students are college pre service elem teachers. Many of them have math anxiety after years and years of it building. And going into a profession where being strong and confident in math is unfortunately not seen as critical #SwDMathChat
  • PaulaKrieg Oct 26 @ 9:19 PM EDT
I think that measuring by speed is really soul crushing. The emphasis is all wrong. Fluency is important, but not speed IMO #SwDMathChat

  • getting_sharper Oct 26 @ 9:24 PM EDT
