Less than a min to ! All educators welcome to the convo about digital literacy.
Hey Tim! Hope you had a great day! Thanks for joining
Brian: Education Undergrad/ MEd Learning Media Technology next semester. Student. Living in Amherst.
Q1:Let’s start at the beginning. What is dig lit?How does it differ from/relate to info or media lit https://t.co/lOCGPxbKmS
Hi Brian! You certainly are busy!
Don't forget to introduce yourself. Lurking is okay but make sure to say hi to the rest of us.
A1 digital literacy is such a large area. Including tech literacy
I find that many educators are unclear about what dig literacy really is. What are your ideas?
Welcome Guy! Thank you for joining
A1: Deep understanding of media, information, & WWW use. Includes dig. citizenship, creating, navigating, and publishing info
It really is and has morphed a lot over the past 15 yrs. How do we start defining it?
A1: dig lit is the ability to consume and create in multiple digital modalities
What do we mean by "media?"
anything that includes a digital heartbeat
A1 part 2 media lit is linked to the ability to comprehend and create media messages quite different
Students now have both online and physical Identities. Dig. lit is being able to understand and utilize both of these.
Joining now from Savannah where I have intermittent Internet access.
media has 2 meanings- traditional media outlets and forms of individual expression
How does dig lit differ from info and media literacy?
. So if you had to give an elevator speech definition, what would you say?
Glad you make it Judy! Hope your connection holds!
A1:DL=ability to use devices & knowledgeable of them.ML=able to analyze &create media pieces..I think https://t.co/hfAXQQDpbj
Q1:Let’s start at the beginning. What is dig lit?How does it differ from/relate to info or media lit https://t.co/lOCGPxbKmS
So do we all agree dig lit relates to both consuming and creating?
Tiffany, AL, saying hi to
Q2: What skills are specifically related to digital literacy & at what age should they b introduced? https://t.co/TGu8guh2dJ
. Love that you included the use of devices as well Tiffany. Use is part of dig lit.
Digital literacy is the ability to learn out of context in a dynamic, interconnected medium. https://t.co/Ojf3dC8jSW
it really depends but I'd say forms of expression e.g. pics video words dance if it is rec dig than it is dig lit
A1 Part 3: Dig. lit. is using/understanding info and media on a digital platform, includ laws, best ed uses, etc.
A2: Digital literacy should begin as soon as parent believes a child is ready to use digital devices.
Id argue and navigating--specifically for info: what we want to use/consume and what info isnt valid or useful
Big day for digital citizenship. First, event with students; now is talking digital literacy with educators!
A2: As early as possible. The digital world is here, and schools can provide safe and wholesome lessons on proper use
Excellent point Brian. So we are thinking consuming, creating, and navigating in a digital world?
a2 as soon as a parent hands a child an Internet enabled device
yes like reading and writing morph into consuming and creating
Digital literacy requires unique skills around questioning and verifying source integrity.
Q2: It is never too early to introduce a child to digital literacy using the appropriate tools for the age
And what skills would you start teaching first Nathan? https://t.co/960pITClry
a2 as soon as a parent hands a child an Internet enabled device
I think that's what has made understanding dig lit so difficult, it keeps morphing!
Q2: We live in world where digital tools are omnipresent. The sooner we help a child to navigat in this world, the better
A2: Citizenship should be priority. Info literacy on dig. medium, and perhaps proper essential use socially and educationally
What other skills do you think are part of dig lit Alex?
One could argue proper navigation of digital world is the most important and difficult lesson to teach our students!
A2: as early as possible by teaching appropriate ways to communicate and seek info.
. At what age should this dig citizenship be taught?
A2) My parent 2 cents says: any age. This includes establishing rules & knowing how to navigate tech. https://t.co/GxHZERMOIS
Q2: What skills are specifically related to digital literacy & at what age should they b introduced? https://t.co/TGu8guh2dJ
Why so difficult, so you think Brian?
Search-research, data->information, discerning consumption & content creation
Can you give an example of what you might do Tamika?
Id argue as early as Kindergarten!
Q3 coming up in one minute
Digital literacy also requires some basic understanding of the structure of the internet.
Can depend on parents to teach proper navigation? Cultural and social differences also. Diff. mediums of navigation
Q3: If u had to rate ur own digital literacy skill level 1(high)-5(low) where would u fall and why? https://t.co/4BMPkZ3A1z
A2 skills are navigating, mashing, smashing, disentangling, meme-bending, socialmorphing, crowdcreating
Ur parent 2 cents r appreciated Jeremy! We r our children's first teacher & need to consider how we will tackle
This can get more complex as kids grow, but even the youngest can say whether something seems "good." https://t.co/86qsJmU4op
Digital literacy requires unique skills around questioning and verifying source integrity.
. Does your school have a dig lit curriculum in place Brian? Wondering what others have in place as well
Just the use of in classrooms could prove beneficial and a means of digital introduction
A3: Tricky question as rating one's dig literacy is all very relevant to context & population
Do you think parents have the skills themselves to teach proper use Brian?
A2: knowledgeable of different devices and their usage, able to engage in networking communities, critical thinking
This shows we have a LOT to learn along with our kids. It's new to all of us. How exciting is that? https://t.co/n1DeSbpCMA
A2 skills are navigating, mashing, smashing, disentangling, meme-bending, socialmorphing, crowdcreating
A3: about 4 still struggling with snapchatting and instagramming may be too old for some
Agree, as long as use is preceded by lessons in dig lit. Can't just give device w/o it.
Id have to double check. Its been covered in my coursework thus far
teach students how to use age appropriate online tools
LOL...it may be time to grab a 10 yr old to help you our Guy! 😂
what is posted on the enter net stays on the Internet
Perhaps. I think SES status (those with tech in home) plays a major role. Can a parent w/o a computer teach proper use?
A2, Being strong digital citizens is huge. Before a S begins using tech, they should understand basic principles.
A3 Digital Literacy is finding, evaluating, sharing & creating content using the Internet. That pretty much sums up my life.
Late to . Debbie, Math Teacher from Washington State
Agreed. could prove good medium to introduce dig lit and show applicability--key in any grade
I think some schools are slowly realizing that dig lit is missing from curric & scrambling to develop it.
In today's world a parent can easily teach & w/ a phone. Home computer not needed
I'd rate myself pretty high up there. I've got . :)
very few parents are without at least a smartphone we can start digcit there
Do you teach first or intro the tool first?
A2:Until they're 2 or 3, they should be talked to by parents, with limited use. They're still learning pic, word, sound assoc.
Starting with a phone makes sense; it is the go-to tool
Excellent first lesson. Do you ever do the toothpaste activity to help get the point across?
A3: I grew up media and the digital world, so Id rank myself a 4. Theres always new tech and new media to learn though!
Excellent question Brian! Thoughts anyone? https://t.co/1rRggs0475
Perhaps. I think SES status (those with tech in home) plays a major role. Can a parent w/o a computer teach proper use?
Know promotes toothpaste activity for awareness
Tech has helped push the skills that human beings need anyway. is global citizenship.
Ppl have said parents have phones--for ed purposes how useful is cellular lit, esp for 'navigating and consuming' info
A3. I'd give myself a 4. Always seeking ways for blended learning opportunities. There's sooo much to keep learning.
Hey ! Love the topic tonight. I lead the today and our students had so much to sy on this topic!
I love NetSmartz! I used the lessons w/ my own kids & made them sign the pledge over 10 yrs ago.
Q4: Thinkng abt ur classrm, what ways have u assessed ur students’ dig lit skills in the past? https://t.co/NtmSBPUrr9
I teach first. Modeling is so important 4 dig lit
A3: I'm a 3. I'm digitally literate in Eng, HTML, am still learning the language of twitter & tumblr. dig lit evolves fast
It's a great hands-on visual that makes a point that sticks with them.
A4: Use a survey but observations tell the real story
Evolves fast! Yes! Any idea how/ if schools should attempt to keep up?
Oooo- cellular literacy....I like it! As powerful as phones are now, I think they can be used to intro both.
I have used and staff and students have earned their digital drivers license prior to getting devices
Agree, and being consistent in your modeling. As soon as you cut corners the kids adopt it as the new norm.
good to hear. I've wondered whether access is an issue. It's sometimes used as an excuse to avoid.
Digital Divers License! I love it!
We have BoY/ EoY assessment that overtly questions digital literacy. Seems to fall on Media classes 2 teach.
A4: have them create see what they do. I start with a dig self intro end with a dig pres of a dig project with stds
Thanks for sharing Melissa. I will have to check this out - new to me,
I believe we should all be teaching and reinforcing. Q4
I think we have to do our best to keep up. We must understand what Ss are doing in order to guide.
Do you think dig lit should stay in Media classes only?
Also why teach training in diglit is so necessary and important! Dig lit should be on both ends https://t.co/AkuC9M71tq
Agree, and being consistent in your modeling. As soon as you cut corners the kids adopt it as the new norm.
Given variety of ways Ss use digital tools, we need to keep questioning them
Do the surveys give you good feedback as well Judy?
The surveys are an entry point when I start a course, but not much more than that
Am wondering, is dig lit taught in undergrad? If so, to what extent; if not, why not?
yes yes yes! Education isnt just academics, but creating productive citizens, esp in our digital world!
By time Ss enter undergrad programs, many have more advanced dig lit skills than profs
had to look that up! I assume it's about: what you put out there can't get back in the tube.
The one thing I learned today at is that Ss need a voice in this conversation. They deserve to be empowered
I live very rurally where many places don't even have a cell signal.
Only times it was taught to me was in graduate courses as undergrad. Nothing from uni about dig cit, etc.
Agree, & it's a challenge to break some Ss of their ingrained concept of dig cit
especially as devices become more common at younger ages
Great point Debbie. As tech/skills evolve so must our ways of teaching.
Yes, cell phone signal is an issue, but that will improve in time
Q5: What might be some ways you can incorporate digital literacy skills in your curriculum? https://t.co/aj9sg68jWi
One T said, "I thought you would have tips for what to do when you are aware of sexting" um...it's bigger than that right?!
You got it Jeremy! You pass around tube, ask kids to squeeze some out-then put back in
No way! It's a community responsibility! :)
Wow, that needs to change. Not only do Ss need to be able to teach, but understand what it is for themselves.
A5: Every teacher in every grade & subject needs to find ways to fit dig lit into the curriculum
I believe there are also internet devices to bring cell signal to locations. UMass had done so in dorms
I teach a whole course on but integrate it into other courses also
Teach storytelling...ask them to apply concepts on social media...authentic audience.
We hope! We live in big hills- too expensive to put in amount of towers needed to carry signal.
caught a little bit of the morning on Blab. Very excited about the idea. Would love it at my own kids' schools.
Love integrating digital storytelling; it is my favorite dig lit skill to promote
Agree April. Think it is easily integrated in all curricular areas.
I definitely need to check it out!
Since am traveling couldn't get online for so hope can follow archive
https://t.co/Oq4dSxHd85 helps Ts manage open-ended S online exploration and inquiry while scaffolding critical thinking
Was gone all day and so disappointed that I missed it!
Because digital realm is so integral to all citizens in current day?
Thanks for sharing Alex; I will check this out.
Going to beg out early.Need to be up 4 am for a 20 hour drive home. Many thanks to for guest moderator tonight’s
Sleep well Judy and be safe tomorrow. Thanks for the opportunity to moderate!
it bothered me until I saw the student responses...they got it...and they're motivated to do dig it better
Q5: As librarian I work with teacher to infuse dig lit w/info lit since the two go hand in hand
Agree Maren. Devices are in the hands of toddlers. We can't wait until kids are in school to educate.
Free is my most favorite price!
Do you find that classroom Ts are knowledgeable about the topic or do they rely on you to take the lead?
A5: Dig info provides voices and perspectives textbooks cannot. Good medium to teach info lit, trustworthy source, etc
. Ss say they will compliment more and criticize less. Interesting ? What if the like button was removed?
Q6: What role might digital literacy skills play in ed for the next generation of “digital natives?” https://t.co/FOUaW8V5oH
I'm a 3 - beyond awareness. But with rapid change, may be at stage 3 forever even if I keep learning. https://t.co/E58JQoq4Sf
Q3: If u had to rate ur own digital literacy skill level 1(high)-5(low) where would u fall and why? https://t.co/4BMPkZ3A1z
A5: curriculum is set in place instruction. Some may feel it's not a daily necessity, but... https://t.co/UQYdHZ8ies
Q5: What might be some ways you can incorporate digital literacy skills in your curriculum? https://t.co/aj9sg68jWi
Do you think your peers are prepared to teach dig lit Brian?
A5:...digital resources are used daily throughout the classroom
A6: Ss are educated to be productive and create change. In a dig world change will be dependent this dig lit.
Digital native or not; citizenship is the skill! Citizens create the norms...this is not new...only the space is.
Not familiar w/ but "Free" services & how they are paid for is an important part of
Hope Ss follow through! hink if like buttonwas gone that Ss self-esteem wld plummet.Too tied into other's likes
Love this! https://t.co/HVCcSnGzEZ
Digital native or not; citizenship is the skill! Citizens create the norms...this is not new...only the space is.
Depends on the peer :). Some have solid idea of it, some misuse it daily, usually within digital citizenship/info lit
A6) It'll be a basic tool in ed b/c it's integrated into their lives. We don't say "pencil literacy." https://t.co/L9tFdIeA9Y
Q6: What role might digital literacy skills play in ed for the next generation of “digital natives?” https://t.co/FOUaW8V5oH
I agree and know that it takes money to create great products.
Literacy is now digital literacy - there is no going back! Appropriate skills are essential for everyone.
A6: Just popping in from SC! Adaptability and interconnectedness of dig- tools to make decisions https://t.co/crVwULtgYQ
Q6: What role might digital literacy skills play in ed for the next generation of “digital natives?” https://t.co/FOUaW8V5oH
depends on the t and their experience. Some ask for my help
Interesting Brian, and sad as well.
Exactly! https://t.co/SJDKTKDmpv
Digital native or not; citizenship is the skill! Citizens create the norms...this is not new...only the space is.
that's quite a drive! Safe travels.
We grew up in a period where proper use wasnt modeled for us, nor parents had solid idea of use. It was learn as you go
So happy you popped in Julie! Thanks for sharing with us!
So your generation slipped through the cracks?
Thanks for taking part in tonight’s and allowing me to guest moderate. Plz connect w/ others & grow your PLN!
