Hi! Everyone- glad you could make it for #NoVAedChat. I'm Kendra, one of the co-hosts. My week has been fun. I hope that @AmyWinstead and @gjlyman can join us tonight!
Welcome to #NoVAedchat! Please introduce yourself, tag a friend who should join us to talk about feedback and tell us how your week has been so far been in a word, image or gif!
Hello, #NoVAedchat! I'm Joe and I'm a part of the #StaffordITRTs in Stafford, VA. My week has been great so far because I have been finally able to start working with Ts on a passion of mine, #PBL's and Backwards Design.
A1 For me, specific feedback is critical in both situations. I'm not a fan of the 'feedback sandwich' that @kimballscott talks about in @candor. Don't try to hide the feedback in compliments.#NoVAedchat
Hi friends! I am Suzanne-- Instructional Technology Coach (SBTS) at Madison HS. I think @MsPettyTweets should grace us with her presence. This week has been . . . #NoVAedchat
A1: I think the most effective feedback is followed up by a conversation. It helps to know someone’s thinking, correct misconceptions, and talk through any confusion #NoVaEdChat
A1: What makes feedback effective is when it is direct, purposeful, and meaningful to the Ss and/or situation. This allows for a correction in path immediately and it helps alleviate some of the frustration that going through it and not knowing until the end. #NoVAedchat
A1: Feedback should to be specific and targeted. It should move past a judgement (nice job!) and provide insight on what’s working or what could be reconsidered #NoVAedChat
Hi! I’m Eileen 👋 I teach special ed @HolmesMS_FCPS Last week was a tough one, and this week is going better, but I wore this shirt today. #fullmoon#NoVAedchat
Good question! You know it is purposeful and meaningful to the person by it is not telling the person what is wrong but you are guiding them to the correct understanding. Facilitation is the key. #NoVAedchat
Hey everyone! A little late to the party b/c I had to put the little guy to bed and was trying to work on my grad school paper. This week is feeling a little hectic, but isn't that always the case as the quarter's end grows nearer? #novaedchat
A1: What about feedback in the other direction? Students have a lot to say about our professional practice. Listening to them could lead to improvement on our part. #NoVaEdChat
A1 I think feedback is most effective when it involves the opportunity for dialogue. It allows for more targeted feedback and shared ideas for moving forward. #NoVAedchat
A2 I prefer to receive feedback in person! I feel like I process the information much better when I get to listen, ask follow up questions, and take my own notes on the feedback (positive and negative) that I'm receiving. #novaedchat
A2 Optimally, I'd love a screencast if it's feedback on an artifact. Otherwise, I don't really mind how I get the feedback aside from it NOT being in a large group. It's gets to be 'too many cooks in the kitchen'. #NoVAedChat
A2: I like to receive feedback directly, but with understanding and knowing we all make mistakes and are learning. I rather someone be direct with me rather than just sugarcoat it. #NoVAedchat
A2 This is a tough one for me. Last year was the first year I felt I received strong, supportive feedback that helped me grow. The mode wasn’t as important as knowing the person giving it wanted to support me in area that I identified for growth. #NoVAedchat
What feedback do you think is most helpful? I’m thinking this year to ask teachers to choose an area where they would like me to observe and then identify what specific feedback they’re most interested in receiving. Makes it more meaningful #NoVaEdChat
A2: As long as it doesn’t begin with, “No offense, but . . .” Haha but in all seriousness, I love a compliment first and then a question to bring me to my own understanding of what needs to be improved #novaedchat
A2: A combo of written and verbal. Written so I can keep track of it, verbal so I can talk through stumbling blocks and get more immediate responses #NoVAedchat
On Friday we reflected on what's working/not working in all aspects of our classroom. Today we came together to start problem solving based on the feedback. Thanks for the idea, @pernilleripp !
A2: I like to receive feedback directly, but with understanding and knowing we all make mistakes and are learning. I rather someone be direct with me rather than just sugarcoat it. #NoVAedchat
You bring up a great point -- S creates something. T provides feedback. Then what? We should make a routine out of referring back to goals and feedback. We should take time to reflect and revise. It's not a comment and we all move on. #NoVAedchat
Good idea! What might be some suggestions 🤔 I’m thinking someone could go broad like math workshop or more specific like “how many students are on task when working in small groups” #NoVaEdChat
A3 I often ask people in words for feedback. I also have a link in my signature to a form that asks for feedback on work I'm doing. I've often followed up meetings with feedback forms (that can get a little much, though). #NoVAedChat
Hey #NoVAedchat! Margaret @HolmesMS_FCPS! I have been in a lot of meetings lately...some of which I scheduled and facilitated, so I can’t be mad, I guess. 😂 I think @cskamar should join us for this chat!
1) get real with yourself. If you know many are unlikely to deeply internalize... Do something else.
2) feedback to their face is how @Catlin_Tucker does some
3) don't release the grade until they respond to feedback
4) make assignment to make corrections to FB

Yes! I'm always willing to try something new and grow. If someone tells me to do something I get stubborn; if someone asks me a question and I think about it and decide what I need to do, it's meaningful. I'm sure we have Ss who can relate to this. #NoVAedchat
A3: I love using thinking routines for feedback. There are so many that work but Compass Points is one of my favorites for student reflection #NoVAedchat
Q3 To get feedback from Ss, I've used Google Forms & I usually give the option to remain anonymous. Last year, I started doing more community building circles, & I really appreciated hearing from Ss about what is/isn't working in our class through that. #novaedchat
A3: I’m currently using #ObserveMe but not too many people take advantage of the opportunity to give me feedback 😔 I often send quick feedback surveys on specific school initiatives. Also, our teachers will engage in Learning Walks soon #NoVaEdChat
I think the topic for feedback has to come from a conversation - what have you been working on lately? What do you want to improve on this month/quarter? What are you learning? How can I help you get there? #NoVAedchat
I like the survey in your signature! What a cool idea. What kind of questions do you ask? Is it anonymous or include followup? #NoVAedchat I'm so intrigued!
A3 I'm also doing an #observeme Google Form for colleagues in my department to use when they visit. (We're all going to try to get into each other's classrooms this semester.) I'm excited about trying something new & getting non-evaluative feedback! #novaedchat
A3 This year, each T has a running google doc that is available to the T and the admin team - Ts can ask to be observed for specific lessons and share notes/requests for feedback. I haven’t used it yet, but I like that I have a say in the feedback I’m getting #NoVAEdChat
A3: When I want feedback on something I will just go to a person and ask them to look at something. I have recorded myself teaching and sat with friends, with adult beverages, and asked them to give me feedback. I have also invited people into my classroom as well. #NoVAedchat
We did a T survey this year and kept it anonymous but the last question was, "if you'd like us to follow up please include your name here." It was really helpful! #NoVAedchat
😂😂😂 You might be surprised but I get home In the afternoon and say the same thing😂 I completely get it ...and feedback is important and should go both ways. Not sure how to make this happen. Most feedback admin receives from Ts is when things aren’t going well lol #NoVaEdChat
A3: I just ask @techiesuzie for help on everything 😜 But really, I turn to people whose opinions I value and I as them to be honest. I use more formal structures (like Glows and Grows and Google Forms) with my students #NoVAedchat
A3: I am all about impromptu conversations. What did you think about that professional learning? What did you like? What would you do differently? I'm ready to be honest if you are. Some structures: 1) Ladder of Feedback 2) Cultures of Thinking Snapshot Observations #NoVAedchat
Q3 @RashidaJGreen I also had an observeme form last year but didn’t get much feedback. I think it surprises people when you ask for feedback so openly. Giving others time to process & think of what to say is important so others aren’t caught off guard! #novaedchat
Q4: Often, lack of time can be a barrier to providing feedback. Do you have tips or tools that help you provide efficient and effective feedback? #NoVAedChat
I was in a 4th grade classroom last week with @ehmukai@AndreaHand2@kmkoelsch and the teacher had built in so many structures for students to give each other feedback. Sentence stems that led to specific feedback to each other. It takes practice #FCPSPog#NoVAedchat
A4: It's important to build time in for feedback. Whether it's having lunch together during an off-period, scheduling time in your email or emailing questions...ask for feedback! That's how we grow. #NoVAedChat
I agree! I think that everyone wants to feel valued and appreciated! My foundational belief is that everyone walks in my building wanting what is best for kids. This grounding thought allows me to respect teachers and want to help them achieve their goals #NoVaEdChat

A3: Thanks for introducing me to #Observeme and you’re right-not a lot take advantage of the chance to give feedback. Google forms are always great for anonymous (and often more honest) feedback #NoVaEdChat
Q4 I just discovered Kaizena! I used it to give voice feedback on my seniors' college essays/personal narratives, and I will *definitely* use it again. It was an efficient change of pace from written feedback on student writing. #novaedchat
A4 From my experience, it’s best to give the feedback in the moment (or as soon as possible). It’s so easy to set it aside and forget specific thoughts (or to actually give the feedback altogether). #NoVAedchat
A4: Perpetual feedback! I shifted my classes to more self-paced learning which allows me to constantly circulate throughout the room and build relationships with my Ss, answer Qs, and give feedback on every step #NoVAedchat
A4: I love using Google comments as feedback for students. I also enjoy leaving screencast recordings for students about their work. #meaningfulfeedback#NoVaEdChat
Q4: Often, lack of time can be a barrier to providing feedback. Do you have tips or tools that help you provide efficient and effective feedback? #NoVAedChat
Right! ...and so sad right? Like I love all feedback and sometimes I wish our feedback was a little more well rounded. What if I said, please give me a glow before every grow 🤔 It’s interesting and I wonder how many people consider it 🤔 #NoVaEdChat
Q4: After I visit a classroom, I ask the T to stop by at their earliest convenience so we can discuss how we think the lesson went and what might be a next step to making it better. #NoVAedchat
A4:
-Find a positive early
-Provide a resource rather than an “answer”
-Build trust and relationships first
-Ask questions to get “them” there (Ss & Ts)
-Focus feedback on the issue not the person
-Be specific
-It's okay to "reuse" feedback! (Who disagrees??)
#NoVAedchat
Q4: When I was teaching, I would hold mini writing conferences with my seniors while the class was engaged in a self-directed activity. This way I could give them feedback, have them set goals, and not have to take anything home. #NoVaEdChat
Agreed! Admittedly, I still use sentence stems with my seniors sometimes. It's a way to move them beyond "good job" or "nice work." The more we facilitate productive discussion, the better our students can become at it. #novaedchat

Q5: We often hear that emotion is a barrier to receiving feedback. What tips or advice do you have for teachers and students who struggle to receive feedback because of emotion? #NoVAedChat
A1: Thinking about this from an admin lens...both giving and receiving feedback...it’s most helpful when it is timely, specific, direct, and compassionate. And if it’s an ongoing conversation, not a one-shot deal. #NoVAedChat
A4: It would depend on the type of feedback. I would say using some sort of check list might be helpful. I’ve also tried to just write facts when I observe and then later determine questions for next steps #NoVaEdChat
Q4: Often, lack of time can be a barrier to providing feedback. Do you have tips or tools that help you provide efficient and effective feedback? #NoVAedChat
A5 Getting feedback can be uncomfortable, but only if you let it. Check your mindset.. do you really want to grow and get better?? Listen to other’s point of view. People who are willing to give you feedback care about you and want you to improve. #novaedchat
A5 @candor has been a HUGE support on this for me. We have to build #relationships and care about the person before, while, and after giving candid feedback. #novaedchat
Thank you! My SBTS @techwithlennon totally hooked me up! I can send you the google link and you can make a copy and change as needed. Send me an email to remind me and I’ll do it tomorrow 😘 #NovaEdChat
I have a google form in my weekly newsletters asking families for feedback - just like yours, it’s anonymous, but there is a spot where they can include their name if they would like me to follow up. I love the idea of having it in an email signature so it goes out to more ppl!
A5: That’s a hard question because I think our job is an emotional one. However, I think we all just have to remember that growth doesn’t happen when we’re in our comfort zone and we all have room to grow. #NoVaEdChat
Q5: We often hear that emotion is a barrier to receiving feedback. What tips or advice do you have for teachers and students who struggle to receive feedback because of emotion? #NoVAedChat
A5 Another tough one for me bc I definitely get anxious about feedback. I think it’s essential to have a relationship outside of feedback -if the only time we ever sit down to talk is for feedback, it can feel more punitive than supportive. #NoVAedChat
A5:
-If someone is taking time to give you feedback, they want you to succeed
-Listen with a receiver not a speaker
-Start with a “thank you” before a defense
#NoVAedchat
A2: I need Written to process it & face2face for dialogue, & I don’t need all the formality of a memo. Just send me an email or pop by & talk to me. And I really need it to be individualized and not canned. #NoVAedChat
A5 Encourage them to focus on the end goal (improvement) and remind them of how much you care. If they don't know you care, little else that you say or share will matter. #novaedchat
I love how clearly you articulated this... understanding that time is needed to process AND written/verbal are most effective together is something we need to consider with our audience. Thanks for sharing @margaretfbarnes#NoVaedchat

A5 As much as I love giving feedback in the moment, I know that Ss who feel like they bombed something don't necessarily need to hear from me immediately. Sometimes "timely" feedback is feedback that comes later. It's a delicate balance #NoVAedchat
Thinking about students giving each other feedback, I would also consider the book Academic Conversations! Lots of sentence stems that are subject specific and useful for different types of dialogues #NoVaEdChat
I would rather get 3 sentences of original feedback than a full page of feedback built from sentence stems. Can you tell I have strong feelings about this? 😂 And please acknowledge that you are only observing a small snapshot of the work that I do. #NoVaEdChat
A6 this week I’ll make it a point to ask for feedback after visiting teacher’s classrooms. What went well? How could this be improved for next time? When can I come back?? 😊 #NoVaEdChat
I heard at a training recently that you can think about relationships like a bank account. You need more deposits of positives in the account before you withdraw. Feedback can be emotional if there are not enough positives to cushion the negative. #cognitivecoaching#NoVaEdChat
Q5: We often hear that emotion is a barrier to receiving feedback. What tips or advice do you have for teachers and students who struggle to receive feedback because of emotion? #NoVAedChat
A6 I want to figure out my #ObserveMe criteria. I'm in a new job and learning so much - I need to narrow it down and figure out what I really want to get feedback on #NoVAedchat
A3: Big area of growth to specifically ask for feedback, because I assume that people just feel comfortable enough to tell me, but that is SO not true. Need to do more reflections and post-meeting surveys, definitely. #NoVAedChat
a6 I'm copying @AbbeyFMiller because I love her 3rd question and I usually ask some form of the first 2. Working w/a T for the 1st time tomorrow which will make it the perf opportunity. #NoVAedchat
