Welcome to tonight’s #ProDriven chat. I’ll be your moderator for tonight’ topic - Professional Development and The Hero’s Journey. Go ahead and introduce yourselves :)
A1: Getting started is often the hardest part of a learning journey. I like to start by acknowledging our strengths, but then talking about weaknesses we can start turning into strengths. #ProDriven
A1- educators are consistently faced with status quo scenarios/temptations—the system itself fosters status quo. Our calling is to challenge that. Step outside the system to model learning and our desire to get better each day. #ProDriven
A1: I think it could be anything that makes you aware of a need for change, a drive to learn something new or inquire about something. I experienced this myself and it woke me up from my complacent slumber. My assistance came in the form of @MrsStephenson3#ProDriven
I suppose the invitation is that feeling of wanting more, but being unsure of how to go abt achieving more. The help can come from individuals who have taken the journey. #ProDriven
A2: I'm having a hard time loading the video clips, so I'll answer as best as I can...I think "safe" to me is not stretching the limits of your mind, not challenging yourself to think outside the box, no matter how scary. #ProDriven
A2: I would say that plunge into the special world is an educator saying, “I don’t know the answer to improve my weakness, but I’m willing to take that first big step.” #ProDriven
A2- I think the great thing about this topic and clip is to explore just how similar our journeys are despite the fact that what represents our worlds can be completely different #ProDriven
A3: The Trials are seeking out my learning. The Approach is the Integration Phase. “Have I turned my weakness into a strength? Let’s give it a go and see.” #ProDriven
A3- for sure our inability to let go of parts of our craft. Innovation and risk taking require space. We have to be willing to devote time to design and be prepared to sacrifice or ask ourselves tough questions such as “what’s got to go?” #ProDriven
A3: Trials: 1st time failures, lack of support, works but not sustainable. Ex: creating programs that rely heavily on ppl, and $$ to support over timme #ProDriven
A3: The trials to me are the ways in which I learn based on collaboration and reflection. Those things that have been my weaknesses have scared me into challenging myself to grow. Some of those weaknesses have become my strengths. #ProDriven
You are very right! It does get easier, but I am sorry to admit there was a time when I chose flight. Eventually, I realized it got me NOWHERE. I was bored and stagnant. I didn't like the teacher I had become. #ProDriven paradigm shift coming!
A4: Crisis to me is those moments of strong self-doubt. A drop in scores, intimidating parents, pressure or passive aggressiveness of fellow colleagues for trying something different. You name it. #ProDriven
A4: Ummm...can be something as simple as switching dynamics of a team, introducing ways to increase productivity that aren't familiar, and as complex as changing the foundation of qhat has always been done...in order to diversify learning experiences for Ss and Ts #ProDriven
A4: It could also be the willingness to try something new and ultimately having it backfire. Makes you really question your craft sometimes. #ProDriven
A4 - when it doesn't go according to plan, it's not letting that reinforce why you shouldn't have tried in the first place, but how you should dust yourself off and try again. #ProDriven I think part of that is surrounding yourself with the cheerleaders you need 4 encouragement.
A5: I firmly believe that educators need to be recognized for their learning journeys and the willingness to turn weaknesses into strengths. However, the PROCESS needs to be recognized, not so much the final product. #ProDriven
A5- the greatest gift of education is reciprocity. Recognition is therefore found in the success of our students. The impact is the aim and the gift. #ProDriven
Yes. Or even people to help see the “failure” as one way not to try it. Sometimes the simple question could be, “What needs to be changed? How else might you get the results you were looking for?” #ProDriven
I believe we need to have physical representation of where we are on our journey, much like mountain climbers who use flags at the various camps up the mountain. #ProDriven
A1: The challenge comes from our passion. Children. Creating a better world for them by creating the best learning environment. Its a giant challenge, but colleagues, coaches, admin, twitter, books, etc...all are a part of taking on YOUR challenge for YOUR kids. #prodriven
A5: I feel like the #prodriven journey is always ongoing, w/recognition stops along the way. Recently, I rec'd some recognition from my Ss who asked me if I could do SEL lessons w/them in Spanish again this year! (I'm learning Span). What could be better? MADE my DAY! #ProDriven
A2: The "safe world" is what is known. It is the educational system we were taught in and taught to teach with. The "special world" is the world of the future. The one where access to information, learning, professionals, etc is at our fingertips.
#ProDriven
A3: Trails will come in the form of confused faces, regular iterations of the same skill, try, fail, try, struggle, try, reflect...each time getting a little bit better. The hardest part is not letting ourselves slip into old ways simply because the struggle is real. #prodriven
A6- this entails building a culture of celebration. Peers need to keep the flame lit for each other. When someone reaches the peak or breaks through, they really represent all of us. #ProDriven
A6: “This quest has changed the hero. He’s outgrown his old life.” I love this sentence from the video. Isn’t that what REALLY WANT professional development to be? Is your current PD allowing this to happen for ALL your educators in your district? #ProDriven
A4: I think all teachers are in this profession bc of their love for children which is deeply personal. So the "darkest hour" is when you have come to disequalibrium with a practice you previously embraced and start to wonder if you were effective previously. #prodriven
A5: This is such a hard question to answer since everyone experiences and appreciates recognition so differently. I think the highest honor is being invited to present your learning to others as it shows a respect for your journey. #prodriven
A6: Passion/motivation is fueled, learning is increased as sharing and reflection occur, & learning becomes contagious as the hero reflects & shares w/others..causing even more motivation for the hero/mountain climber. #ProDriven
A7– PD can be very linear and can come from a place that doesn’t invite ownership. The best PD is about big ideas and growth opportunities. If that is missing, potential is lost #ProDriven
A7: One word: Empowered. Empowered teachers. Empowered leadership. Empowered Students. All because moments were taken to respect the individual and support their journey. #prodriven
When the video talks about getting out of the comfort zone, does your district culture believe in just pushing people out of their comfort zones, or inspiring and igniting the intrinsic motivation for individuals to do it themselves? #ProDriven
A7: One word: Empowered. Empowered teachers. Empowered leadership. Empowered Students. All because moments were taken to respect the individual and support their journey. #prodriven
I think PD should be a little like google maps where there is a destination with a variety of routes. Some take more time. Some less. Some take backroads and enjoy the view. Others hop on the highway. When we empower professionals to embrace their "trip" everyone wins. #prodriven
