Thanks for jumping into #BookCampPD on #RandomActsOfKindnessDay I am your moderator and welcome Elyse @Hahne_Elyse as tonight's guest moderator. My random act today is giving away a copy of one of our 8 Winter/Spring focus books at the end of the chat. Glad you're here!
I'm jumping in tonight, not because you are giving something away, but because I want to support @Hahne_Elyse ! (But a book would be nice!) :) #BookCampPD
Thanks @mjjohnson1216 Wanted to give myself some direction in terms of what #Learn meant to me for this year, after doing a little reflection and planning. #OneWord2019#BookCampPD
I'm Karl, 3rd-6th gr basic skills ELA teacher from the Jersey shore.
How am I real? Hmmmm.
Cogito ergo sum.
I think differently than many of my peers. But I'm not afraid to share my thinking even if it pushes them to a place they don't like.
#BookCampPD
A1 I valued individuality in a coworker by inviting her to team up with me in a PD session on Personalized PD. She had experience with one form of social media that I don't use! #BookCampPD
Hi Kim, trying to put the finishing touches on the last three chapters of my second book and it's been a bit of a slog. I have to get into the mindset #bookcamppd
A1: Being real and honoring individuality requires getting to know our Ss. We need to know what their interests are, ask them about those interests, initiate with them about THEIR interests, so they know we care. #BookCampPD
A1: Recognizing every student that comes into the building by being present and greeting them outside of the classroom is big.
Knowing that someone knows that you are at school and that you are important is huge. #BookCampPD
A1: I think that two letters in @taramartinEDU’s acronym #beREAL are important (R and A) for connecting with students and staff: being Relatable and Always Approachable. #bookcamppd
A1: To paraphrase Larry Rosenstock of High Tech High: connect educators’ passion(s) to their subject area; the same applies for appealing to students. Focus on their passions! #bookcamppd
I like different. I like digging into other ppl's thinking and questioning them - not to change them, but to change me. Being present in those conversations is how I try to value others' individuality - learning from them.
#BookCampPD
Teachers use to tease me about being a "valet" service when I met every student in the car drop off line and walked them over safely to the building each morning. #BookCampPD
I like the TED talk where the author of Eat Pray Love focuses on the idea of an external genius, to alleviate pressure on a person to consistently be highly creative and successful. #bookcamppd
I greet my Ss personally every day, so I know their body language. I know when something seems off. I pull them to the side, we have a 1-1 and they know I am there for them. Opening up has to be on their time, terms. #BookCampPD
A1: Teachers need to discover students’ interests and then build them into their class with intention in lessons, texts, topics for A&E, and student choice. #bookcamppd
A2 I recently had the opportunity to attend #TCEA . While not a technology teacher, I try to share with others things I learn and use in my classroom. #BookCampPD
A1: Allowing students to demonstrate understanding in alternative methods is essential if we truly desire to change the landscape in education. There are more options than essays and multiple choice tests. #bookcamppd
A2: I think that the very act of getting up in front of people every day shows vulnerability.
With students is important to acknowledge mistakes and personal struggles that you have.
Seeing you as a person who is relatable allows kids to see value in effort. #BookCampPD
A2 I made it a goal to help other Ts this year and not just focus on behavior with Ss. Many times, our Ts need support and ideas to support Ss. #bookcamppd
Being targeted (focused) is so key. Having some data (qualitative or quantitative) to respond to in that targeted impact is also important to increase effectiveness. #bookcamppd
A2: I admit mistakes! The kids see that even grown ups mess up and we have a good laugh about how I tripped over my tongue while reading to them #BookCampPD
Our own vulnerability?
That requires bravery and trust.
Bravery to reveal ourselves; trust that the people we surrounded ourselves with will keep us safe when we do.
That's tough in the best of circumstances.
#BookCampPD
A2: To expose vulnerability, Ts need to narrate their own experiences. Ss need to see that everyone struggles. Ts can think aloud and model how to get through those struggles. Our class needs to be a safe place to take chances. #BookCampPD
A2: Vulnerability is closely tired to authenticity...having the courage to be our true selves, no matter the challenges, allows us to be vulnerable and take risks. #bookcamppd
A2 I believe listening just to listen and not to answer is one way to grow and to support others in a different way. Many times, people just want others to listen and not have an idea or a suggestion. #bookcamppd
A2: I would be careful with the word “expose” and vulnerability. I think we have to be careful about giving advice around vulnerability to others. It is important to take risks, nurture self-belief, and assume positive intentions in others. #bookcamppd
A2: Try to say “yes” even and especially if it is something that you are uncomfortable with when you believe it could lead to personal growth. #bookcamppd
A2: It is important with our students and teachers to gradually release responsibility and offer opportunities for challenges, risk-taking, and leadership. #bookcamppd
A3) I think if we are truly listening to what's being said around us, we will be approachable. I know that I feel most comfortable approaching the person who I know will really listen to me. #bookcampPD
A3 Be Mindful of how quick you are to respond and listen with intent on learning a new perspective or idea. Thank the person that lead you down that path. #bookcamppd
A2: I feel once we climb down from the pedestal of needing to be the expert, and partner with others to work on areas where we are less experienced, true growth can occur. Fear of failure has short-circuited many dreams of mine. I need to be open to not being perfect. #bookcampPD
#BookCampPD A3: Being approachable comes from humility. When others feel that you are humble and not judging, they open up and feel comfortable making mistakes & being real
A3: We are approachable and truly build relationships WHEN others know we are truly listening to them...they know we care, empathize, love! #bookcamppd
I think it is important to match (or be similar in) body language. I have to work on immediately offering solutions. Better to help the person share and gradually arrive at possible strategies. #bookcamppd
A3: Listen and ask questions to connect authentically and meaningfully. Make conversations about others first instead of dominating by offering ideas and solutions. #bookcamppd
A3: Share vulnerability and mistakes with students and teachers. If you want others to share and reflect, then you can’t present yourself as infallible. #bookcamppd
A4 I have learned, from some of the struggling readers I have had in the past, strategies that I share with other Ts to use with their own struggling readers. #BookCampPD
A3. I think that being approachable is being authentic. Talking with students as people and respecting their intelligence is important. Recognizing the discussions around us and validating the ideas is something that help us to reflect and grow. #BookCampPD
A3: Offer multiple channels for feedback and constructive criticism (of yourself) both directly and anonymously (with students and colleagues). This will help others do the same with themselves. #bookcamppd
A3: Ts need to build relationships with each S. We also have to take time to be silent. We don't always need a conversation to know what is going on around us. Being present, reaching out...those things make us approachable. Ts can't fake that with Ss. #BookCampPD
A3: I try to listen to get the whole story from various points of view so the Ss know they can come to me with an issue. Admit I fell down on that this past week with our benchmark testing #bookcampPD
A2 being open with risks we take, share our stories, and when we connect with others through that, makes a big difference, especially with students #bookcamppd
A4: Include humor (at your own expense, not others); avoid being 100% serious. Share short, personal narratives that are relevant; this will help you connect with others. #bookcamppd
Simple things like greeting others each day can set the tone and start to build trusting relationships. I always say hello when passing others in the crowded halls during transitions. Brightens up the tone. #bookcampPD
A4: Share your own goals and dreams with peers and students; they will become comfortable sharing theirs. Find ways to support them on their journeys. Don't forget to give time for pursuing your own. #bookcamppd
A4. There are many different types of mistakes we encounter on our learning path. Once I called the staff together and shared the mistake I had made w/ tears rolling. They shared how much they appreciated it. #BookCampPD
A4 Truthfully, this is a beautiful question. It's one of those reflective questions that I cannot answer during a chat. But, thank you for giving me the opportunity to think about it. #bookcamppd
A4: Never assume an adversarial stance (me vs. them) with students or colleagues. Instead take the stance of a co-learner; you can learn from peers and students as much as they can learn from you. #bookcamppd
A2 being open with risks we take, share our stories, and when we connect with others through that, makes a big difference, especially with students #bookcamppd
A4: No one gets out of this world unscathed. I believe that we are whole human beings as a result of our experiences. Sharing both your successes and setbacks often serve as a learning opportunity for Ss and staff. We grow and learn by our successes and setbacks. #BookCampPD
A3 Being available, welcoming students in, make time for conversations often, even quick interactions, I always try to lean in and listen more, my #oneword2019 is intentional #bookcamppd
A1 As an Instructional Coach/Reading Specialist, I've learned/am learning what individual Ts like. As a result, when I see certain articles or resources, I pass them on to specific people. As a result, they know I've picked out something just for them #bookcamppd
A3: I appreciate feedback, positive & negative. When we take what others are saying to and about us, and put it together with our own reflections of who we are, we can get a more complete picture. Does the feedback match up? False statement will quickly become clear. #bookcampPD
I think that kind of sharing is brave and can help galvanize a team. Sharing mistakes should be done with colleagues and students. Thinkaloud for how to respond to these types of situations can be very powerful. #bookcamppd
I’m Chris, an elementary music educator in Arkansas. One way I try to be “real” is by doing my best to show my kiddos that I love them. #BookCampPD#BeReal
A4 Being more open to building those relationships, involving students more, escaping the isolation that can happen and putting myself out there more by connecting #bookcamppd

A4 I work with severe behavior and special ed. One connection I’ve made is everyone has an unspoken story. I have the pleasure of seeing it unfold. Sometimes it’s through actions and other times it’s through experiences daily. #bookcamppd
A4: No one gets out of this world unscathed. I believe that we are whole human beings as a result of our experiences. Sharing both your successes and setbacks often serve as a learning opportunity for Ss and staff. We grow and learn by our successes and setbacks. #BookCampPD
Wow. Powerful statement. Maybe it's how we choose to wear these wounds and learning moments that sets us apart as individuals. Something to ponder more about. #bookcamppd
Thank you for joining #BookCampPD Elyse @Hahne_Elyse was a marvelous guest moderator! Hope to see you next week when we continue the conversation around #RealEDU with author @TaraMartinEDU
A1: By actively listening to others and inspiring them to include their perspectives and reflections within the fabric of the school climate and culture. #BookCampPD
A4 I love the fact I am still in contact with most of my students over the last 24 years. I believe it is due to building relationships. I attend their extra-curricular activities and learn about their culture and their background to make purposeful connections. #bookcamppd
Congratulations to William J. Briggs @wbriggs1861 for being the winner of one of the eight books we will highlight during upcoming #BookCampPD chats!! Please send me a DM with an address and telephone number and Amazon will get the book delivered to you!
Love the idea of an "unspoken story." Interesting to considering students, colleagues, and ourself as an active protagonist and narrator in our own tales. We don't have to let the story happen to us. #bookcamppd
A4: With a possible exception, I try to overlook tone or attitude (from a coworker) because I’m still new to the district and school so I can learn from the person and going forward work better with them. But I try to get to the root of their mood/issue/concern too #bookcamppd
I enjoyed dropping in to the conversation! But I'm guest-hosting #edChatRI now! Won't you join us to chat about Infusing Global Learning in the classroom? I hope to see you all there! #bookcampPD
A4: I learned real quick that teaching is not about getting it right the first time but learning and growing each time. That’s the first thing I tell anyone who is interested in becoming a teacher. #BookCampPD
