The #INeLearn hashtag is used for both asynchronous sharing and synchronous conversations. Include #INeLearn in your tweets if you want to share resources or questions with Indiana educators and school leaders. Asynchronously, the #INeLearn hashtag provides educators across the state of Indiana a central space for sharing. On Thursday evenings beginning at 8 CST/9 EST when you use the #INeLearn hashtag, you are joining a live conversation--the #INeLearn Twitter Chat. For one hour, we interact in real time having a virtual discussion.
Welcome to tonight’s #INeLearn chat! We will be examining some of the worst ugly holiday sweater no-nos and how we can avoid similar design flaws in our digital content.
Before we get started, introduce yourself to the group. Throw in a pic of you in your favorite holiday gear or “ugly sweater” if you have one. #INeLearn
I’m Michele, tonight’s #INeLearn moderator. This was taken today while my team was working on our #ICEindiana 12 Days of ICE-Mas Lip-Sync video. Anyone else submitting?
Chris from Bloomington, IN. Teach world history for private online HS affiliated w/ Indiana Univ. Going to try the double chat tonight. #sschat#INeLearn

Note to self: Maybe don't make #INeLearn introduction tasks where folks have to go digging around for photos. LOL... anyone out there or are you all searching?
Listen to students. Let them help you design assessments and activities. At upper levels they can have a lot more influence. Let them choose how to prove mastery. #inelearn
R1 I'm was too ashamed of my lack of holiday gear for introductions. But I will say learning about your kids' interests and relating it to the content can liven up a boring sweater... I mean, lesson. Also, use the tools they like to use! Snapchat, Twitter, etc. #INeLearn
I like to point out that student-to-content interaction doesn't have to be with fancy interactive content. Literally just have them DO something with the content... move from passive to active. #INeLearn
R1: Make it relevant and in their world. Today we used Emojis to represent the Bill of Rights, then shared it on twitter to see if anyone could figure it out. They loved it. They were getting deep on what represents "searches and seizures" and 🐻💪 #INelearn

A1: Love taking existing games and tweaking them. Kids love the twist like Blind Kahoot or even better, creating their own board games to demo understanding. #INeLearn
I usually offer a few options for ?s but give them a lot of freedom in how they respond as long as they can link to it or embed it in a GDoc. #INeLearn
Totally. And here's the thing: When you let students use the tools they already love using, the pressure is now off the teacher to know the ins and outs of troubleshooting said tool. #INeLearn

@Flipgrid@RecapThat or just within your LMS. We used an App Smash of @tellagami & Google Earth years ago where Ss explained in Spanish what they liked best about location in Barcelona. #INeLearn
In reply to
@RiskTaker4Kids, @Flipgrid, @RecapThat, @tellagami
Ss and Ts @chapelglen experienced a science lesson INFUSED with tech tools to increase collaboration and critical thinking this week! Thx @robbiegrimes for your expertise! @MsV_Classroom#wearewayne
Q2: This holiday sweater is too busy and has no reasonable patterns or purpose. How do you create consistency in your online content and avoid information overload? #INeLearn
It was a fun (and educational) time! We used a chrome extension (Emoji for Chrome) and google docs. They had a blast and came up with some good stuff. Check out #ChillHistory to see what we did! #INelearn
Use it to introduce the lesson. Ss are 'blind' as to what is being taught. Ts get to see the progress of Ss learning throughout the game. Really powerful #INeLearn Here's my blog post. https://t.co/I13C5VDWgb
But isn't that.... *GASP*... COPYING?!
Also, I'm kidding. We stress too much about reasonable, real-world collaboration strategies. #mytwocents#INeLearn
I think that's really valuable. I have Ss share portions of their work with each other to get feedback and hopefully convos via GDoc comments (online setting). #INeLearn

A2: You don't have to use ALL the tools every lesson. Variety is nice, but give students the chance to be innovative & creative with 1 or 2 tools. #INeLearn
R2: I try to stick with a common format, that has some consistency with the rest of the school. As well has breaking lessons down to allow some "wiggle room" or as I call chill/goofing off time (absorption time?) #INelearn
R2: Purposeful lesson planning equates to teaching and learning in an online space. Modules in @CanvasLMS help to focus the direction with digital content. #INeLearn
A2: Make sure your content is organized. Model this Dig Cit for Ss. When you introduce new tools/apps, give Ss time to play, explore & learn them. #INeLearn
R2 If you're a visual and linear person like I am, using something simple like #hyperdocs, Canvas modules or even MentorMob can make it easier to see the progression of tasks/content without becoming overwhelmed. #INeLearn
R2) My lessons all have same format w/ some similar elements done in all lessons but also some changes as well. Consistent format helps Ss be comfortable & have sense of order. #INeLearn
Templates are EVERYTHING. We can save so much time for our students if they aren't constantly readjusting to the structure of an online lesson. #INeLearn
R2: I think you have to guide the research to an extent. You also have to frame the problem so students know what they're really looking to solve. Encourage looking at options and forming ideas. #inelearn
We chunk information for students in a traditional classroom, but often forget to do that online. In an attempt to lessen the # of clicks, we put everything on one page without considering cognitive load. We can only process so much at once. #INeLearn
Q3: Some ugly holiday sweaters feature big, prominent characters on the front (like a reindeer or a snowman or even Santa himself). Online learning needs a HUMAN touch, though. How do you add a human element (teacher and student presence) to your digital content? #INeLearn
Yes! Each section of my lessons have a particular color. Ss have response GDoc that is color coded to correspond w/ lesson sections. They are given link in each lesson & forced to make copy of response doc. #INeLearn
especially now that when you make a continuous video on snap...it downloads all together! @padlet makes a great tool for all the videos to be displayed together! #INeLearn
(Thank goodness for the extra character count on tweets now... Some of these questions/sweaters are a stretch and require more explanation LOL... Hopefully the content is as beneficial as it is cheesy.) #INeLearn
Agreed! One of the scariest things for us sometimes is videoing ourselves, but it's so important. I tend to think a low quality video of the teacher is generally more effective than some random flashy YouTube video. They want to know YOU are there. #INeLearn
R3: My two big things these days are 1) pairing up students 2:1 on devices (h/t @mrvaudrey) and encouraging student discussion before responding, and 2) intentionally building in questioning. Desmos "pause" feature is your friend here. #inelearn
R3: I'm an animated random manchild when I teach so I like my digital setup to represent that. I can still be my goofly teacher self while maintaining consistent and usable content #INeLearn#HistoryStuffs
A2: Consistency will take effort. Try out different learning protocols, get a feel for what direction they take the learning. Work on using strategies that are directed towards specific learning outcomes. #INeLearn
And it's so good that your personality comes through in the digital content. I'm the same way. A little (read: a lot) quirky F2F, so I try to be intentional about teaching online and showcasing my personality there, too. (I think it shows in the #INeLearn chats, too)

Q4: No one likes an ugly holiday sweater that is itchy and uncomfortable. Is our online content “uncomfortable” for our students? How do we make our content easy to use, navigable, and accessible? #INeLearn
R3: I've used mastery paths in @CanvasLMSto personalize learning. I also love that the Quiz feature in Google Forms can provide students with answer feedback. #INeLearn
Awesome! I absolutely feel they should see the digital content as I am in person. I want them to get the same feeling/relationship when the work online as they do when they are in the room. That includes, like you, personality in full effect #INelearn
I've been embedding a video of myself doing the notes for each lesson in the slides & on Canvas this year. Not even my face, just the notes handout, but several of my students use it to "re-do" the notes as they work on the practice set. #winwin#INeLearn
We mentioned color as a tool for organization earlier... when it comes to comfort &accessibility, we have to be careful. Black font on white bckgrnd for sustained reading & use a tool like WebAIM to determine if your color combos are accessible: https://t.co/WqxrlDnJZv#INeLearn
R4: I think it's important to listen to students & their feedback on online lesson delivery. What did they like/dislike; what was challenging/fun #INeLearn
R4 Online content is often uncomfortable when it's new or Ss haven't been properly introduced to it. Even a simple video of the T at the beginning of a course/lesson explaining the process, expectations and how to get help is invaluable. #INeLearn
Hard agree on this. I have a few screencasts in my intro module for each course to walk through course navigation, setting up GDrive folder & GDocs, how to comment & adjust sharing settings, how to submit work, etc. #INeLearn

R4 As silly as it is, I just recently learned the IMPORTANCE of using formatting in Google Docs-not just font size, but title, subtitle, normal text...critical not just for organization but accessibility! Little things make a BIG difference #INeLearn
In a blended classroom, I've seen @teachforthewin post a Google Doc on the board during online time while she's with groups. Ss post Qs to the doc. She can respond w/o interrupting her teaching and students can help each other. #INeLearn

Yep! When we read, we use headings to skim the text. If you are using a screen reader and can't see those cues, you can't do that. Using that specific format structure allows a screen-reader to skip sections. Cool! #INeLearn

A4: Whether its print or digital. Ss need explicit modeling and GP. GAFE allows Ts and Ss to practice searching and curating resources without leaving the Docs app. Google Powersearching lessons, Google-a-day are both opportunities to practice. #INeLearn
R4: haven’t looked back but we need to simplify or chunk content for our SpEd and ELL Ss. Maybe even have multilingual instructions for this purpose. #INeLearn
Q5: We’ve all seen the ugly holiday sweater that lights up and flashes. In your online content, how do you avoid unnecessary flash and use multimedia and images in meaningful ways? #INeLearn
Plus, what's good for some is good for all. Even adults experience cognitive load. We don't process more than three things at a time, so creating pages with tons of content in one place sets Ss up for failure. #INeLearn

One thing I find though is that rule sometimes causes the “meat and potatoes” to become a feast that is overwhelming. Need to keep a few clicks—not too many; not too few. #INeLEARN
Seen a similar concept that allows other Ss to answer too. Can keep the discussion open to multiple classes to keep the conversation and learning going throughout the day. #INeLearn

Alright, my #inelearn peeps. Got to duck out early tonight. This is such a powerhouse group. Best 60 minutes of my week, every week. You all that are heading to break: enjoy! Hasta...
R5) Videos housed in @EDpuzzle so no extra ads or suggested videos (though love that YouTubbe gives option to take those out before sharing now). Keep images to consistent sizes and format w/ page layout. #INeLearn
R5 The use of visual media in digital content is: 1. Always a perfect opportunity to remind students about copyright and intellectual property 2. A great way to model design principles such as emphasis and balance for visual art students. And as always, keep it simple! #INeLearn
One design strategy: Try designing your content with only visual media first, no text. Come back after and add only the text that is necessary. Removes redundancy and helps us think more intentionally about visual media. #INeLearn
R5: When making presentations, I've been really into the Explore feature in Google. The TED Talks: The Official TED Guide to Public Speaking has helped my teaching and how I teach presentation literacy to Ss. #INeLearn
R5: Visual appeal makes a HUGE difference. Finding that sweet spot with using the right amount of pictures vs a complete wall of text is important. Balance. #INeLearn
R5: In my actual content, I try to stick with the Pictorial Superiority Effect. Make those images useful and relevant - That absolutely can include memes! As well as flow, make it flow and aesthetically pleasing #INeLearn

Check out the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. They are the technical guidelines that informed Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act for accessibility. Surprisingly simple to understand language, too. #INeLearn
R5: Make sure to not add unnecessary media. I think teachers need to step back and think about the instructional value of the media. If you are distracted by it, I’m sure your students will be too. Create content like an artist would create a painting, have some style #INeLearn

Q6: I always wonder if some of these holiday sweaters with movie characters and references are copyright compliant. Where do you go for open and copyright compliant digital content? #INeLearn
Absolutely! But, Unfortunately everything is on my bookshelf in my classroom. I'll definitely send it to you tomorrow and tag #INeLearn. Sherry just shared this and it's pretty awesome!

Our friends from @PATINSPROJECT are a great resource as well. They often have chats on Tuesdays, in addition to the FREE services they offer. #INeLearn

Q7: Ahh, the holiday version of the Tuxedo T-Shirt. Some things just aren’t as good on a t-shirt (like trying to replicate Santa’s suit jacket). What F2F practices work well in an online environment and what doesn’t? #INeLearn
R7) Getting to know Ss & letting them get to know you is really important f2f or online. Wish I could figure out good simulations to do online (& asynch & self-paced). Miss those from f2f environ. #INeLearn
R6: Pixabay is a great source for images. The google explore tool would be a tool that Ss can easily learn to engage within their google docs. Also important to use the Common Sense Fact-checking resources to evaluate content #INeLearn
