A1-I think it is important to teach Ss how to respond to something all experience in a safe place
My Learning from Mistakes page https://t.co/xhStX0iQwr Fail = First Attempt in Learning SAILS = 2nd Attempt In Learning Successes
BonusA: Failure is part of learning...its allows us to grow and seek deeper thinking
you'll love it! is the man!
A1: Best way to learn is when you fail and make mistakes, as long as you keep trying! We can model this with our students.
Failure is the best learning process. It causes us to re-evaluate and apply higher level thinking skills in order to try, try again.
What if you fall, but dear what if you fly?
B1: Have to be able to take risks to succeed, risks often include failures!
BonusA: how do we learn, if we never fail?
Jen Stelter SWPRSC PD consultant
. My dirty secret. I tell kids it is ok to fail and learn, but personal failure terrifies me.
Ss need to know its ok to make mistakes, it's what do after that, that shows true character.
A1: This is my fav thing to say to kids when they are worried someone will make fun of them for failing https://t.co/Xy6wTEnucN
A: We need to move away from failure being an "identity" & towards it being an "outcome". Outcomes can change; identities less so
I love the moments I blow it in class! Such a teachable moment.
A1- Failures are simply opportunities to learn!
Right there with you!! https://t.co/Fe7GX8UF8d
. My dirty secret. I tell kids it is ok to fail and learn, but personal failure terrifies me.
A1: I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. -Thomas Edison
A1: "If we don't allow Ss to fail in the classroom, we are setting them up for failure in the real world" -
"I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can't accept not trying." Michael Jordan
A1 I don't have a favorite quote about failure but just looked on Pinterest for inspiration!
Any peeps have these awesome quotes displayed in their room?
I don't, but I think I need to get some posters made for next year!
I am currently doing the same thing! lol! :)
We are not the sum of our weaknesses, we are teh sum of the Father's Love for us- John Paul II & yes, on my wall!
A1: What if failing was meant to teach us we are human.
A1: Failure is an event, not a person. Yesterday ended last night.
not yet, but going to add that to the to-do list!
I think is very important when discussing failure. https://t.co/TJ2InHz7IU
"I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can't accept not trying." Michael Jordan
I heard of a teacher having a failure wall. Big star if you failed and improved
A1) "Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be" - John Wooden. aka a failure is only good if you learn from it.
A1: mistakes are proof you are trying
Fingers crossed Q2 will show up in a minute!
A2: I try to build relationships with kids that make them comfortable in my classroom, which gives them the confidence to try
A2: We allow our grad students to resubmit their work if they want to, after receiving feedback from the professor.
a2 Still trying to build that culture. It is one thing to say "you can always improve," it is another to empower ss to believe!
A2 Creating strong relationships so Ss feel comfortable when failure happens
A2: I tell my own stories of failure (I'm a med school quitter) to my kids so they know those stories are typical
- curious if you agree? "Game Changer: 4 Reasons Game-Based Learning Thwarts Feelings of Failure" https://t.co/cAUECc8kCG
A2 Watched a class... mistakes are 🎶learning time🎶 in a song type saying...from day 1, so just the way it is-- Ts or Ss
A2: Our STEM fair projects had lots of failure and relearning. It was great to see Ss persevere. S/O to !
This is the key for me, too! https://t.co/Aosikf5Mpb
A2 Creating strong relationships so Ss feel comfortable when failure happens
A2: Homework is not graded until AFTER we've gone over it. Try it. Show corrections (if needed). Then turn it in.
A2: I share my failures & we take a lot of "practice" tests so they have the opportunity to improve in areas needed
A2: Through problem solving in math, STEM challenges, which are great for failure and going back to the drawing board.
A2:Today we did push up test.Ss set personal goal,if they didn't reach it, not a prob.On ,Tell me how you will get better
A2: I'm honest about MY failure in the classroom and tell them what I'm trying and admit when things don't work
A:2 I model failure & let Ss know it is ok to try & not succeed.
A2 I love to hold Socratic Seminars in my class- analyzing film, pol cartoons, song lyrics where there is no right answer
A2: I want to be a better T today than yesterday and better T tomorrow than today
A2-I give Ss multiple opportunities to complete work, reduce anxiety by not making assessments high stakes
Awesome that you are joining us!
A2: Building relationships, giving Ss opportunities to think, rethink & redo
A2: that's a toughie. Try to understand their thinking and help them move forward
A2- I try to allow for Ss to problem solve within our content area-Social Studies without my help, "mini-PBLs".
A2: Giving Ss the opportunity to reflect/evaluate and share their learning. We discuss how to give and take "helpful" comments
A2: Less "high risk" grading schemes for some activities. Reward the process...provide feedback on the product. Allow try-agains.
It is scary to fail. I model it quite frequently *cough* usually not by plan!
A2: Lots of feedback and chances to fix their mistakes.
A2: I point out when I fail n let my Ss know that I failed a lot in education growing up from LD. That's why I'm here 2 help them.
A2: Grades in my class are "A's, B's or Redos". You can learn & succeed if u want & choose 2. 1st time doesn't have 2 be perfect
A2 students learn to use constructive criticism
Sorry I'm late. Randy, Commissioner of KS. Here to support the GREAT teachers of KS!!
I love this idea! Def want to steal it for next year. Way to codify that improvement is expected!!
A2: math today-I missed 2 prob that Ss caught. We all make mistakes
Love all the thoughtfulness in our answers! teachers are amazing! Question 3 coming up soon!
A2: I let my Ss know how I struggled in school and about my LD. I'm here 2 help them succeed n show them they can overcome as well
A2 Share openly that I fail on a regular basis. It's ok to make mistakes, learn from it & move on.
We are EXCITED to have you starting your career!!! Congrats!!
A2 I have alternative assess options based on multiple intelligences instead of only having the opp. for s's to formally test
A2 Class Dojo has a great cartoon series on growth mindset w/ discussion questions. The Ss really relate to the characters
Looks like our Royals need to start learning from their failures here pretty soon in this game! You can do it boys!
A3 Ss create a business and have to market/sell their product to other Ss, we discuss economics
A3-relationship building is something I'm good at. It is amazing what Ss will do if they feel valued

A3-Relationship building.Greeting kids at the door, you get to make small talk about non-academic stuff. haircuts, new shoes etc.
Checking in from 40,000 ft on my way back from Q3: we’ve created a new Project Based Learning center. Ss love it.

What a GREAT question!! :)
It's addicting! Can't wait to have time this summer to make some!
A3: I tried alternative seating, authentic experiences, and try to allow Ss to have a say in how and what they learn
A4: Want to encourage methods of flexible seating and more coding for Ts!
I agree. in 1st, they have no walls yet.
A3:part 2: we use for gaming in the classroom and are introducing
A4- I was allowed to buy new furniture, bean bad chairs, stability chairs, cafe tables. I am working on room arrangement.
A4: I am really excited about flexible seating! I want to build on giving authentic challenges.
Q4: I would love to have a makerspace on Fridays next year. Ss need time to play and create with and without technology.
A4:I want to see my classroom become more project based with authentic tasks, that kids say oh that's why I'm learning this
Q4 I do encourage creative projects for hands on learners but would like to know more about Makerspace and bringing it into SS.
A4: I want to do more with authentic challenges and gamification!
A4: Makerspace and coding, this can happen in too, just have to get it figured out! Also, assessing (authentic) is tough-WIP!

A4 Building creativity in a space where they are taught to conform and follow directions.
A4: Authentic challenges and scenarios because we want the learning in our program to be relevant to our student's experiences.
I saw a Makerspace at ASU when I took my son. Very cool to see it at the college level.
a5 starts in the halls. Saying hello, I'm routinely in motion checking in on groups, minimize lecture, maximize learning time
A5 I see my Ss as people, I treat them as friends/family
A5: being as positive & happy as I can! say good morning & greet kids by name...I have every kid in the bldg so it's a big impact!
A5: I let Ss know we are a family! Many days I spend more time with my Ss than my wife & kids. Let them know you care!
A5: All about building those trusting relationships. Obstacles: breaking down the walls, you just have to keep at it!
A5: at all times! Everyone can share and not be scared of any negativity.
A5: Our class motto this year is "Don't forget to be awesome" and it has created a positive classroom culture
Q5: I now have to make more of an effort to stay on top of trends they like.
Greet Ss every morning by name. Let them know you care by investing in their lives. (model social skills to!)
A5 My goal this year was to learn more Ss names! My school has 500+ students and I need to say hi to everyone I see in the hall!
A5 Looping does this naturally. The 2nd year it's "welcome home"
A5 I try to REALLY LISTEN to what Ss say, then another day ask a question or comment, lets them know I am interested.
I agree. It begins with building trust.
A5-making Ss feel welcomed needs to be authentic too, they can tell when we are faking it
A5 I try to reach Ss in way they feel most comfy- get close to quiet, get close to needy, ok get close to all
A5 Intentionally creating authentic relationships with each child.
A5: take kids' input and really use it, letting them know that their opinion matters, and makes them feel valued
A5: I try and hangout by the front door of the school so I can "say hi" to students of all grades.
LOVE this! https://t.co/D3NraGFWV6
A5: Our class motto this year is "Don't forget to be awesome" and it has created a positive classroom culture
I gather "deep data" about my kiddos. Learning what they love to do, etc. Having convos over the lunch table is the best!
Q5 I use humor and let S's know I'm on the level in a silly way. Never too cool to be real. I let them know I care beyond school
A5 I have to know the person, not the student. Ss are more than scores. I have to share from my heart. Middle school can be harsh.
I have a Ss that wrote "Be awesome" on a Postit note. I keep it on my computer to remind me that is what my Ss want.
A5 I started eating breakfast @ school and it was a great way to meet students (also breakfast is good 4 you)
Cutting out a bit early tonight - thoroughly enjoyed both and . Thanks everyone!
g'night Didn't mean to be such a lurker!
A5 l: Build trusting relationships and be real with Ss
A5 Seems common theme is 2 show respect & care."We're all in this together" mentality. As says "Love 1st, Teach 2nd"
A5: model positive attitude, give hugs, listen to/share stories
Good night everyone. Excellent chat tonight. ❤️this group of educators!
A5- I smile. It can change the mood and atmosphere. Ss like to know their teachers likes them. Obstacles are the home baggage.
A5: Relationships are key! Comfort with risk, teams, failure, character conversations, & more! https://t.co/AMdAmWu8eT
A5: ask how they are feeling, listen to music my Ss love 2 listen 2 instrumental music & guess the song
Thank you everyone for allowing me to watch an OUTSTANDING discussion tonight. Your voice matters and this edchat was awesome!
A5-I think it is important to let them see you as a person, not as an infallible
Thanks for another awesome chat Always inspired by the T's on this chat!
A5: sharing stories and experiences, encouraging risks, creating a safe place, nodding to struggles related or unrelated to school
Thanks this was a great chat topic!
