You have your days planned out well, Paul!

have fun. Hopefully I'll see you on the telly later 😀😀😀😀
Of course! That's what partners are for, supporting each other :)
So far so good. But it seems I have grown attached to my routine :)
Hi Angela, it is a busy morning today!
So my question would be is there a difference between men and women educational leaders & if yes in what way?
and today is very different :) Looking forward to questions today
Is there a difference between men & women leaders & if yes in what way? Thanks for Q Pls respond Q1.
YAY We have a truck this year. Will have a classroom float. We're close to the beginning after emergency services.
not really. Different leadership styles are individual not based on gender
absolutely. a mentor who can help us explore and reflect but also challenge and stretch our default thinking.
A1. IMHO all leaders are unique with own strengths & challenges. I've worked with male & female leaders-look more for qualities
there is a difference but gender not always the reason, what the individual brings to the group is important
A1: I'd like to say there's no difference, but in my exp, women tend to be more consultative
Curious about what you identify as distinctly female leadership strengths 🤔
Q1. Yes. I say this because there is a gender diff in the way we exp life, therefore a gender diff in the way we perceive/lead
A1: Noting the responses saying it's individual, not gender based, I would have thought it difficult to separate the two?
A1: many studies show there are gender differences in leaders. Sadly this is often reflected by what is valued in workplaces
Personally, I see it more about being supportive & empathetic.
I'm not comfortable about generalising on gender grounds but open to hearing new perspectives
A1 think we inadvertently categorise differences which are then perpetuated as stereotypes
Agree. We all bring a range of diff identities. That's what makes us unique, our blend of diff.
A1 My exp of female leaders is as diverse as with male leaders - v different styles & motivations in leadership
Yes take point about not generalizing... I do wonder if there is a difference though :)
Kewl. 2018 is going to be a huge parade too.
Is that partly about perception or expectation before interaction occurs?
A1: the sooner we move from leader competencies to meta-competencies we may see more equality
is now trending in Australia, ranking 1
gd question reflecting on this - in my 32 years in edu haven’t felt this
So perhaps the focus is really around educational leadership & drop the 'women' off?
Is the path to leadership paved the same for men & women? Why or why not?
I've been told that I'm supportive & empathetic 😊 Feminine side? Stereotype?
Agree.I've experienced very different approaches where individually personality traits played role
I love exploring the diff between group & individual identity. There are common traits which divide into endless individual exps
I get your point...and that's why I said in my experience - I don't think there are any hard and fast rules here.
Sadly, worked with a few female leaders sorely lacking in these qualities 😕
Jonesy here , watching my son playing cricket
Interested to hear more about meta competencies?
A1.As an experirnced male leader I think male and female leaders are equal. We all have the same ambitions and vision
A1: One difference with male/female leaders is the level of caring that is often done outside of work.
I'm genuinely fascinated to see what comes of & conf. 😀
IMHO and experience leaders who focus on developing their own self awareness and skills is definer - not gender
So am I & am so disappointed & won't be there.
A good leader is a good leader. Gender shouldn't be an issue. Is that the end of the chat now?
Sorry Saturday sport calls 😟 I'll read the Storify with interest. Have a great day!
Hi Brendan! Glad you could pop in from the cricket
would be interesting to differentiate experiences based on generations
Doesn't research indicate that it's not?
Gender is almost an unexplored concept. It has had very strict definition. There is a fear of loosening the constructs.
Equal but different? Do we have to have the same ambitions and vision? I'm curious...
Hi - simply moving from having leadership traits or qualities to using techniques 1/2 https://t.co/f7HtCqCBQj
Interested to hear more about meta competencies?
can you elaborate on that one :-)
Q1 makes me feel uneasy in this day and age. ?
The only gendered considerations that enter into leadership are the perceptions of the leader by those being led.
should there be any 'constructs'
Thanks for dropping in, Chris. It is an interesting that's for sure! Enjoy your day.
A1.We have 35,000 Primary Teachers in Ireland. 80% are female. This is not reflected in leadership positions.Less than 40%
. support leadership- eg be flexible, future-proof, adaptable
Dr Janet Smith (UC) has done some excellent research on leadership and gender difference
I don't know the stats for Australia, but I want to know. I imagine similar.
Good point! Have some stories from high school days!
Well yes, constructs are a cultural mechanism; however, current constructs need to radically change.
Research makes it clear that the paths are very different
Morning Matt from Sydney here. Have worked in two wonderful girls' schools so very keen for this discussion.
. nice one - feel that we see-saw from one side to the other
Of course I'll be tweeting from the conference so you can follow along. Women in Educational Leadership
Hi Melanie, do you have a link to Dr Janet Smith's work? Would be interesting to read.
Gotta go - workshop beckons. Will catch up via Storify
I think the why is very complex - it's a mix of opportunity, personality, suitability, bias, will, priorities
And we can do this by seeing women as happy, competent, professionals as leaders - in male dominated fields
Organizational traditions and biases of those with power to appoint leaders are also part of the equation
I'll be following from here. The program looks great. Use our hashtag
What are the key areas of focus? How do they differ from other ed'n conferences?
Our first Women in Ed Leadership chat began coz ppl noticed not as many female keynotes at conferences & used social media2 vent
. what about also changing boys perceptions.
even last night most Fellows from 2015 were men. rightly pointed that out.
I would be interested. Thanks, Melanie
So important Phillip. Conversation with my children on the generation I grew up in. https://t.co/rknj8Jm03A

This week a clip was released about supporting Principals. It showed several Ps&tchrs. All were men! The women were support staff
Totally agree. I work in a boys' school, and find challenging attitudes a daily occurrence.
A1.As the role, demands and responsibilities increase daily on Leaders less and less people are prepared to take it on
I must surround myself with supportive male friends who see both sides.
Hi Zeina, great to see you! Are you at the conference as well?
so true - though my mother was a leader in our family and thru her lead nursing role
Never seen a male in leadership having to make this type of comment
Am lucky that I grew up with strong female & male role models. Including some of the best teachers I know.
Yes I viewed & noticed that. I wonder how many others did?Being aware of all perspectives https://t.co/Sf8hhB9W7g

I'm more interested than uncomfortable. I see gender as way less binary than most I suspect.
. think the media team hired to do this should be to blame
Am very conscious of this when planning presenters for pl programs
unfortunately I had something on & couldn't make it, what were your highlights?
Wondering in all male schools, how many women are principals and how many are on the board? https://t.co/YM5EjYHsC7
Totally agree. I work in a boys' school, and find challenging attitudes a daily occurrence.
. I have seen it when males do "females" jobs. "I'm a male nurse/primary teacher"
Not all organisations are, though.
I think it's just a reflection of society. Both men & women wld have been a part of making it. Happily unaware...until!
I've been wondering the same thing. Our school has been making a concerted effort towards diversity
True, but Merit selection levels things out. Creative CV writing isn't gender based
Then there's difference in % of m&f teachers in schools
When I started school (long time),had youngest female principal in the state. She was fantastic. We still talk about her
Wld have to search it up Tina.
… and how I can help her to grow and develop to be a confident young adult with unlimited aspirations
Couldn't make it,I'm in Sydney next wk, is there with many other Eds. Busy times with conferences
": perceived females/males jobs, I agree we need to disrupt the stereotypes "
Also interesting to note in leadership roles in girls' school, best candidate? experience?
When you have a minute :)
Oh you are Funny!! Rushing out to conference straight after.
Are there many males in leadership roles in girls' schools?
that’s partly my point - blindly ignorant - media folk should be acutely critical of gender stereotyping
I work in a boys' school. Women in leadership? Yes. Woman principal? Never.
My schl has many male tchrs & leaders in all girl school. Very balanced IMO
You'd be surprised. Men & women are creative abt diff things.
Sorry, didn't mean it that way :) You are such a dynamo, can't wait for your insights from the conference
My home is all female and my staffroom is all female. Its great and I am motivated daily by their positivity
Thanks all- I'm off to Women in Ed Leadership Conference. I'll tweet out hashtag later. Thanks for asking the questions.
we need to shift how we view living & success/work & having it all - wellbeing/family life is suffering
I have to go... the cheese aisle beckons...
roughly 5 male to 20 female ratio at my sch
Thanks for an interesting chat - some things I hadn't considered before.
🙆🏻☺️ in seeking mindfulness, I'm losing the skill of multitasking! not sad at all!
A girls' school, with 1 female in leadership (deputy) and the rest male, has to raise some questions
keep us all posted from the conference
Thanks, Andrea! Enjoy the 'Women in Educational Leadership' conference.Looking forward to all the great sharing.
let me just get my tongue out of my cheek before i answer that
