Hi #flipclass! Mickie, 8th grade pre-alg & alg1, 4th yr flipped. My favorite about this particular May is it's finally warming up! #flipclasschat

Welcome, I'm flipping physics at Collin College, love it and Ss appreciate time to digest with others. Lots of non-standard students. #flipclass

Tonight's #flipclass chat is focused on 21st century skills supported by the method. We use Q1/A1 format. Please remember to use the hastags #flipclass and #flipclasschat to help folks find the conversation.
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 30 @ 8:11 PM EDT
Q1 What skills (not just 21st cent) do Ss need to be successful in #flipclass? What do Ts need? How do you meet those needs? #flipclasschat
  • KtBkr4 Apr 30 @ 8:11 PM EDT
yes! Seeing the sun is WONDERFUL! #flipclass
    In reply to @MickieGibbs2
  • DanKos3 Apr 30 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A1. Not necessarily a skill but motivation. The learning style is different so adaptability. #flipclasschat #flipclass
  • KtBkr4 Apr 30 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A1 Critical thinking skills are so important! #flipclass
  • KtBkr4 Apr 30 @ 8:14 PM EDT
A1 Ts need to be flexible & willing to explore options to meet Ss' learning needs, #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 30 @ 8:15 PM EDT
A1 I think Ts need determination to work through the start up. Then honest reflection to keep things improving #flipclass
  • flipping_A_tchr Apr 30 @ 8:15 PM EDT
A1 -- for any #flipclass students (esp if the course is mastery-based), then some growth-mindset skills are crucial: revise, retry, reconsider....
  • MickieGibbs2 Apr 30 @ 8:15 PM EDT
    A1: Cooperation/collaboration is a necessary skill. #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • EffectualEdu Apr 30 @ 8:16 PM EDT
Thanks! Glad to be here! #flipclass
    In reply to @flipping_A_tchr
  • flipping_A_tchr Apr 30 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A1 -- for #flipclass Ts, class management skills are essential .. particularly to manage a "messy" classroom with various simultaneous tasks. What are you doing if you're not standing onstage most/all of the time?!
  • kirk_humphreys Apr 30 @ 8:17 PM EDT
Kirk here late from the Chicago Northshore. Teacher of 6-8th grade math! #flipclass
  • KtBkr4 Apr 30 @ 8:19 PM EDT
Ss also need to buy in to the process of flipping. #flipclass
    In reply to @flipping_A_tchr
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 30 @ 8:19 PM EDT
Q2 How do you meet skill needs and deepen content knowledge? #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • kirk_humphreys Apr 30 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A1: Students should be responsible (this improves as the flip continues). Since I give students autonomy over time, they have to plan out their week(s) and how they will use their out-of-class and in-class time to do their practice/videos. #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 30 @ 8:20 PM EDT
That might be why science Ts seem so comfortable with the method. Labs and danger all the time. :) #flipclass
    In reply to @flipping_A_tchr
  • kirk_humphreys Apr 30 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A2: To deepen content, I use class time to have students do rigorous activities and practice work with each other. I then can observe and be the guide on the side. #flipclass
  • StevePawelski Apr 30 @ 8:21 PM EDT
#flipclass Q If you are a beginner at flipping, do you recommend starting with a few lessons/ or committing to go all in? #flipclass
  • arnoldscience Apr 30 @ 8:24 PM EDT
I want to say try a few, but a big part of #flipclass is S buy in, which can be hard in short bursts.
    In reply to @StevePawelski
  • MickieGibbs2 Apr 30 @ 8:24 PM EDT
Hi Steve! You will see both presented as viable options, but I think most of us would say to go all in! #flipclass #flipclasschat
    In reply to @StevePawelski
  • EffectualEdu Apr 30 @ 8:24 PM EDT
A1: Ss need to be able to track their progress and identify the goals within the bigger strat plan for course. Ts need a strong set of resources. I am building the resources by building my PLN right now! #flipclass
  • EffectualEdu Apr 30 @ 8:26 PM EDT
A1: I also think Ss can use an understanding of the difference between Smart and Dumb GRIT. #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 30 @ 8:26 PM EDT
Seen both ways. It's up to you. Consistency is a good plan. Flip a unit, flip a semester...Ss know what to expect. #flipclass (I dove in7 yrs ago and won't go back!)
    In reply to @StevePawelski
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 30 @ 8:27 PM EDT
    Bonus question time! #flipclass
  • KtBkr4 Apr 30 @ 8:30 PM EDT
I'm not a gambler, so I opt for a more prudent approach-- flip one lesson, evaluate process, tinker/tweak as needed, reiterate, repeat. #flipclass
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue
  • EffectualEdu Apr 30 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A2: I have been developing my own toolbox w deep training on ed tech to help hit diff learning needs. I deepen my content knowledge as a Q writer for publisher and by subscribing to several groups / outlets that publish reputable content. #flipclass
  • flippingwithjoy Apr 30 @ 8:31 PM EDT

  • flippingwithjoy Apr 30 @ 8:34 PM EDT
Depends on what’s realistic to some extent. All in helps Ss adjust faster but sometimes the time needed for you to learn video creation etc can make it easier to try a bit at a time (maybe weekly for S routine sake?) #flipclass #flipclasschat
    In reply to @StevePawelski
  • EffectualEdu Apr 30 @ 8:35 PM EDT
Great ?. I would like to know this answer too. #flipclass

Q3 What skills were you surprised to have to teach for Ss to be successful with #flipclass? #flipclasschat
  • EffectualEdu Apr 30 @ 8:38 PM EDT
A3: The biggest surprise for me has been getting them to navigate tools, like the LMS, that I thought they already understood. The other is getting them to use the checklists to track progress. #flipclass
  • MickieGibbs2 Apr 30 @ 8:38 PM EDT
A3: S have to learn how to take more responsibility for their learning. How to engage with video; when to rewind, rewatch, etc. How to ask Q's about what they don't understand. #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 30 @ 8:39 PM EDT
That was a surprise for me this semester. The HS students have been using LMS for 5 yrs now. Thought college kids would have it down. #flipclass
    In reply to @EffectualEdu
  • flippingwithjoy Apr 30 @ 8:40 PM EDT
A3 when I started (2013) I tried a platform Ss had to sign up for w/their email incl a confirmation message - don’t recall if our school board email hadn’t been made available yet to Ss or if just wasn’t used much by them but many Ss were poor at email! #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 30 @ 8:42 PM EDT
A3 Big surprise for me was teaching Ss that listening to a lecture doesn't = learning. #flipclass
  • flippingwithjoy Apr 30 @ 8:43 PM EDT
A3 I find my HS Ss are now very familiar with Google Classroom and their Board-assigned email...or maybe it’s just the school I’m new to this year #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 30 @ 8:43 PM EDT
Q4 Which of the learning skills- collaboration, communication, critical thinking, & creativity - is most often seen in your #flipclass? Is it important to balance all of them? #flipclasschat
  • EffectualEdu Apr 30 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A3: Was also surprised that Ss didn't feel empowered to ask for more from instructors when they aren't learning. Covering does not equal teaching. #flipclass
  • flippingwithjoy Apr 30 @ 8:48 PM EDT
A4 probably critical thinking seen most - doing organic chemistry and must analyze what family of molecules are involved etc. Want to get more creativity because that’s Bloom after all. Comm is key so they can express & you can know they learned #flipclass
  • EffectualEdu Apr 30 @ 8:49 PM EDT
A4: In the little I have done the most practices learning skills are critical thinking, communication, and collaboration. Working on creativity intensively next sem. #flipclass
  • MickieGibbs2 Apr 30 @ 8:49 PM EDT
A4: Lots of collaboration and communication in my #flipclass. I'm always looking for better critical thinking tasks, and I have the farthest to go with creativity. #flipclasschat
  • flippingwithjoy Apr 30 @ 8:50 PM EDT
A4 cont’d collaboration makes us a community of learners rather than isolated bodies trying to reinvent the wheel individually so I try to respect introverts some and push them some #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 30 @ 8:52 PM EDT
A4 need to find a way to balance collaboration during group work. Creativity is a goal - esp student created content. #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 30 @ 8:55 PM EDT
Q5 What skills would you like to learn more about this summer? #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • flippingwithjoy Apr 30 @ 8:57 PM EDT
A5 picking the best active learning thing to do in class for each learning goal...or at least a couple really great things per unit #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • MickieGibbs2 Apr 30 @ 8:57 PM EDT
A5: I need to update my vids, so some upgraded video skills would be nice. #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 30 @ 8:59 PM EDT
