not sure if it counts as a hobby but I like to try a new recipe around once a week #devdiscuss . Also: my next project is learning how to build a bed frame :D
My favorite non-code related hobbies involve food. I like a good restaurant or I will turn on a podcast and create a very good and comforting Sunday dinner. #DevDiscuss
I do lots of needlecraft kits and projects. I've made ornaments, a tree skirt, and stuffed animals. I also like to workout, read books, and play mobile games on my phone. #devdiscuss
I love tying flies. Detail oriented work with unlimited room for improvisation and creativity. Plus, it provides you with the opportunity to hook up with a big fish. Very rewarding when it comes full circle! #DevDiscuss
I like working on my car. It gets me away from the computer, and gives me something physical to work on. I don't know if I'd call it relaxing when I break a f@&%ing bolt off though. #DevDiscuss
It's one of those things that I think can be hobby-fied (like exercise) but is also cuspy because like...at some point everyone should know how to cook soooomething and get *some* form of exercise, right? maybe im projecting my values tho #devdiscuss
Gaming, hiking, biking, and occasionally writing. It's been a while, but playing guitar and keyboard/piano are also somewhere on the list (and something I want to get back into regularly). Gaming gets the most time, though. #DevDiscuss
I have a saltwater aquarium! A lot of work, but you get to play with chemistry, coral and creatures! If I wasnβt an engineer Iβd be a marine biologist! #DevDiscuss
I take a break, depending on the deadline. Sometimes few hours, sometimes days, sometimes months (for my own projects).
It help me rethink and spot mistakes in the initial conception/implementation.
#DevDiscuss
#DevDiscuss My non-code hobbies aren't to "take your mind away from code" since right now I only code as a hobby (that might be changing soon). For a long time I spent a lot of time juggling. It was quite fun and gave me a little exercise.
#devdiscuss I went through a period where I didn't have the energy to do any hobbies, code or otherwise, but recently I've started with juggling again and am also learning poi. I'm quite fond of the circus-type stuff in general, though it's stuff I would only do as a hobby.
Just discovered this chat in my timeline via @jmdembe - cool! Hello all. I've had to stop temporarily due to a shoulder injury, but I really enjoy rock climbing and yoga. I've taken up running in the meantime. #devdiscuss
I enjoy walking around the city on a nice day with an audiobook in my headphones. I like biographies. #devdiscuss
Some exercise and some educational reading all at once.
I'm a huge foodie. I often joke that if I wasn't in tech I'd be a gourmet chef or a pastry artist. Cooking is something that is easy to come home and relax to after a long day. Throw on some music and go. #devdiscuss
My lawn may as well be a third child. I love mowing that bad boy.
Speaking of children, hanging out with my two little girls relieves the stress of coding as well
#DevDiscuss
I can do anything during this break, it just has to be unrelated to coding. Mostly I just tweet and watch movies but I also like to search and discover new topics on dev and physics around the Internet.

Running a ton; on the hilly trails, in the darkness, along rivers and oceans. Running fast, running slow. Listening to your body and feeling your pain points. Practically writing apps and ideas with new vigor from activity #DevDiscuss
O and for those that are wondering, I have been learning French for 3 years. Its hard, I would dare to say harder than creating my first compiler. #DevDiscuss
Martial Arts, been training and teaching Taekwondo for 32 years now.
Very similar to programming: lots of style wars and bikeshedding going on π
My opinion for both: There's more than one way to do it, it's the context, baby.
#DevDiscuss
My other side hobby is thinking about building out my own food blog so I can mix my two passions, but it's still a work in progress. I do have a domain name, email address, and Twitter/Insta handles made so one day. #DevDiscuss
I have a number of non-code things I do that can be considered relaxing (working out, cooking, washing dishes, β¦), but very few also qualify as "hobbies". Most of my hobbies still involve sitting in front of a screen (learning & sharpening skills).
#DevDiscuss
I enjoy binge watching different series with my wife... Just finished Love on @netflix.
Also playing any EA Sports game or Fortnite!
I like to let the mind veg and think about nothing.
#DevDiscuss
Building/racing cars and collecting/shooting guns are my main hobbies. Both are expensive and time consuming but are also great excuses to get outside. #DevDiscuss
To un-wind (but it's not relaxing) I hit the gym at like 4:45 AM to lift. Starts my day off right and it's some "me" time. I feel like it sets the tone for the work day ahead. #DevDiscuss
Lifting weights. It's my meditation, a way to reconnect to my body, and a great way to begin the day.
Non-technical reading is a very close second - nothing like literature to really expand your empathy, mental models, and experience. #devdiscuss
It's playing pool for me. Like, playing it properly at a high level (well, trying to). There's a certain familiar element of problem-solving and pattern play in the game that helps in unwinding - gotta clear that table! #DevDiscuss
How I unwind for code: If it's a sunny day then drive fast on a long road listening to music and drive slowly on way home listening to talk radio / podcast. #DevDiscuss
(I know it's not popular as people call it unhealthy, but I don't expect that from other geeks and it REALLY DOES relax me to learn new tech, practice it, and add it to my toolbelt.)
#DevDiscuss
Thank you! Itβs a small 20 gallon tank with 3 fish (including a clownfish), a bunch of (living) soft coral, a shrimp and some crabs/snails! Hereβs a photo! #DevDiscuss
I have a lot of hobbies but they boil down to:
1. Writing fiction
2. Hiking
3. Reading
4. Hanging out with kids (fuck yeah!)
5. Playing old games with @NGPpodcast#DevDiscuss
Yes! Very cool. I used to be more serious about it and played some 9-ball tourneys years ago. It's great to learn it past the "bar room play" (though that's fun sometimes, too). #DevDiscuss
The #DevDiscuss chat today on hobbies outside of programming is such a great example of how different we all are as developers. Dive in to discover some great ways to unwind away from a computer.
Snowboarding or riding motorcycles. Things that require concentration, physical effort, and a little bit of fear don't leave room for coding problems to wander into my mind #DevDiscuss
I found the best hobbies to keep my mind away from coding and work problems are playing story rich videogames or reading (big Stephen King fan). I get myself into this whole different world and forget about the real one, totally relaxing.

One of my favorite hobbies is collecting 35mm slides from estate sales. Currently converting some to digital files now! Finally started an Instagram for it too https://t.co/iNQwlRuf7l#DevDiscuss
Growing up I also raced motocross, which is part of the reason I have a side project @ultfansx for fantasy supercross and motocross enthusiasts #DevDiscuss
That is awesome! I'm gonna follow. Reminds me of my stint in high school when I would buy already-written-out postcards at flea markets. The older the better. My oldest was from 1903. I still have them actually. #devdiscuss
I'd love to learn archery sometime. Or at least try it. It does look a lot harder than it looks, but it would be something fun to learn that isn't coding. #devdiscuss
I just went looking for them and I may have actually gotten rid of them, but my favorite message was from that oldest one: "I arrived safely with a blue lip." Who says stuff like that anymore?! So poetic for something so simple. #devdiscuss
One hobby I wish I had the time/money to pursue is flying.
Until I work those two out I unwind with the next best thing, aviation videos on YouTube π
#DevDiscuss
My fav non-code hobby is DJing. Love to spend time digging for music and discovering new songs. Particularly anything with a house/funk/disco bent. #DevDiscuss
I like to think that coding is my hobby, surfing is my life, and it just happens that i spend most of my time in my hobby and support my real life with it⦠:-) #DevDiscuss
Another one I just thought of: Camping. We don't do it as much as we want though. We really like cooking during the trips. My goal is to bake a cake inside a Dutch oven over a campfire π₯ #devdiscuss
I love reading, but taking pics is a break from the daily logical thinkingβ¦itβs relaxing for the mind the idea of just saving scenes that pleases you for no logical reason. #DevDiscuss
Just realized I donβt have a relaxing non-code hobby, really like to think and write about things that happens to be in my mind. Maybe hanging out with friends and coworkers or walking through the neighborhood during the sunset, thatβs really relaxing. #DevDiscuss
And sometimes just heading out for drinks with friends or colleagues does the trick. It's sociable and fun. Mix it with a fun outing like laser tag or bowling and boom! The fun relaxing combo. #DevDiscuss
Thanks so much! Installation art/event decor/painting is my current gig right now, but gonna be making coding/web development more prominent in the coming months. :) #devdiscuss

Taking both kids to the park to play and/or launch model rockets, hiking, cooking, trying new foods and drinks, astronomy, and making things (anything). #DevDiscuss
