So glad to have you here tonight!
-
Glad to have you with us tonight!
-
A1 Set up the class so they are naturally working in teams.
-
A1 Ss form teams from the beginning. These teams collaborate daily. They form tight bonds as they problem solve, create, and share.
-
A1: I think it starts with environment & creating a learning space that will foster collaboration
-
-
Hey - interested to see what you're up to tonight! I'm currently working on a blog post abt competition (and a bit about gaming)
-
That sounds pretty cool. I'd love to hear about that!
-
I love with the game wins. Teaches many more lessons than just the lesson at hand.
-
Totally! I am glad you are thinking about multiple paths to “Victory”
-
Love the perks and easter eggs. Always fun when students find them!
-
A1: purposeful talk built into lessons, teammates can warn each other if breaking social contract, group work and lots of it.
-
A1: Team building activities and discussions not just in Sept. Feedback for students on how they work with others.
-
A1 Frequent group talk and discussion. Classroom enviornement-tables instead of desks or desks put into groups.
-
A1 setting student up to work in teams and give them challenges that require them to work together
-
A1: Emphasize ind and group goal setting and help Ss outline the steps to achieve their goals. Don't always set the goals for them
-
I would love to talk PD with you some time.
-
Glad to have you back with us at
-
Forgot about this one. We set group goals too.
-
-
A1: I think by using the language that and I use collaborative talk bookmarks with sentence stems.
-
Do the teams compete against each other?
-
yes group goal setting gets everyone on the same page and with a shared focus
-
A1 Setup guilds - emphasize its more than a team or group, arrange desk-tables are my Level 1 suggestions.
-
Teams are always a powerful tool.
-
And stick with the teams so many Ss think they should change when they don't like someone. learn to work w/ others
-
busy last two weeks but affected my week without
-
A1 Build in situations what have Ss working to over come something. Right now Ss working with their City-State to win Olympics! EPIC!
-
biggest sticking point from reading! Not changing them up so frequently. Great points in the bk https://t.co/r4Z9r1LDAH
-
-
And stick with the teams so many Ss think they should change when they don't like someone. learn to work w/ others
-
sometimes. Today we had a challenge where teams made yeast bread without recipe and made own creation. Competed for XP!
-
a1) authentic situations are tough, might be 2 hard for 1 person to solve. Need the skills of a group. (not sure if this is answer)
-
-
This is key if we want to build effective groups where students can play to the strength of its members.
-
Second Step do activities that promote team building and cooperation with their team
-
I've been doing a lot of coaching on this lately. Many Ss want to change groups when things get challenging
-
A2: End of 1st unit, Ss reflect on each other's strengths & their importance to the team. Helps each student feel valued
-
YES! Need to realize building a team is like building a muscle… it need frequent workouts to remain at peak performance
-
One part my game they have 2 find clues unlock pandoras box 2 find out who is divergent They X # of days to beat the game
-
A2 Had all Ss start on the same level and choose their path to city-states, talents began to show.
-
A2 A scavenger hunt, where the teams get to highlight their individual talents
-
Great way to build in opportunities to shine and show your talents.
-
A2: D1 of a project allowing Ss time to talk through how they are going to divide & conquer. Still coaching my PreAP with this.
-
Of course I have! I've got it on my Kindle!
-
A2: Here is where I try to use side quests that vary so that Ss can grow as well as revel a talent.
-
-
and where the real teaching takes place,
-
Also, your hashtag is super fun to say out loud. x-plap. Very onomatopoeic.
-
LOVE side quests! Really gives the students a chance to shine if options are given.
-
Ha! Did you have to taste test the bread!
-
Yes. THIS! https://t.co/jBSST5KPRO
-
-
YES! Need to realize building a team is like building a muscle… it need frequent workouts to remain at peak performance
-
A2: I think a survey on strengths and weaknesses. Celebrate, Celebrate Ss vote on the most valuable citizen of the World of Factions
-
-
I remember doing a scramble as a teacher that allowed me to find people who had certain talents to check off
-
A2: Get to know your Ss. Create situations for them to genuinely get to know each other. Learn what they love and what they can do.
-
I think this is awesome as it can really highlight students during the discussion of what all happened in the year/game.
-
I have guest judges come in…sometimes staff, sometimes Ss. and yes…had way too much today! ha!
-
A2: Put students in randomized groups. Make sure they are pushed out of their comfort zones and explore their potential.
-
I am having a lot of fun developing side quests that are unique and showcase students talents
-
A2: w/ my 2nd graders it is all about modeling & sharing how I collaborate w/ others. I share failures too & how I fix them
-
A2:I think I offer lots of changes to use their individual talents, but I should help Ss see them in each others more.
-
You survived! Any particularly great breads? Or awful ones?
-
Care to share any that you have come up with!
-
-
I am as well! Its great to see them excited and waiting for them to be released!
-
-
Ah! Sorry gang - got into grading and lost myself for a sec. I'm back
-
A2: Teach Ss how to listen empty, learn from each other and find ways to support each others' strengths and needs
-
Anticipation is a beautiful then, that is when it is not you waiting… :)
-
yup they keep asking what the next one will be
-
I have used maps and a mini game board. 20 questions and they move around the board to answer
-
please share trying to find some new quests myself.
-
A3: Share an exciting intro video and pdf to build excitement. Ss create team name & promo video to introducing team to class.
-
-
Shauna I agree Relationships Relationships Relationships, I think if lead with with empathy Ss will open up alot quicker
-
A3: Theme songs! A sense of mystery! Share about your game as a mission and a huge goal they'll be working towards.
-
-
A3 I like some of the ways grabs the Ss attention when he introduces units. a whole QR Code Hunt through Civil War
-
A3 Learned from that a kickin' rad introduction video sets the tone. Here's my Romeo & Juliet vid: https://t.co/5gJQsB6IeR
-
I have done some where ss recreate clothing, food, flag, games of the country we are studying.
-
a3) introduction powerpoint, saying asteroid was going to hit Earth, w/spooky music and simulation of devastation
-
I was amazed at how good they were! Great way to see how much they learned in unit when they don’t have recipe!
-
Absolutely! I think Ss will open up and share what they know they can do and be willing to push themselves even further
-
A3: I shared an intro video that I had found on youtube. But ya'll have shared other ideas that I want to incorporate next year.
-
A3: Leave room… Call your room… Over & over till a S picks up. Then tell them the game has started over. Give link to instructions.
-
Cartoon maps are super interesting and allow for lots of questions. mini board gives choice
-
A3 We also turned the classroom into a plane and crashed it to begin our summer school class. Good times!
-
Ive used Google my maps as well and google tour builder
-
-
I'm going to crash next year too!! https://t.co/U2xtQ5lLso
-
-
A3 We also turned the classroom into a plane and crashed it to begin our summer school class. Good times!
-
How have you used maps, and real or fictional maps? oh yes liking - just thought of a quest
-
Onboarding was huge in my game style lead them 2 the key (url) 2 my website.Kids comments were priceless "Best Day Ever"
-
A3: Idea video: Carmen Sandiego & her theme song (rewritten to fit classroom) & instead of Rockapella it's sung by my theater friends
-
You guys are awesome!! Q4 coming up in 2!!
-
Congrats and way to do a PlaySMASH where you took two fun ideas and made them explosive together. https://t.co/rfh0S67fRW
-
-
Onboarding was huge in my game style lead them 2 the key (url) 2 my website.Kids comments were priceless "Best Day Ever"
-
-
A3 a music slide/video w/ graphics of game mechanics and terminology to expect. hope to be more narrative next yr
-
-
I hope to make a Trailer this amazing someday!!
-
I really want to creat a cool movie trailer for my game!
-
-
-
-
A3 Speaking of which, if anyone wants to crash a plane in Minecraft to introduce Survival Mode... here! https://t.co/Webs1G8m10
-
-
where did you get the video clips you used in your video for your game?
-
Q4: Students about to recreate the Naval battle of Salamis… They can earn a badge for working as a team…
-
A4: Ss want to level up to acquire new powers both science/tech/warfare, those badges are powerful!
-
War of the Worlds - Orson Wells broadcast - that would generate buzz
-
A4: I award team & indiv badges for XP. team badges for product quality, efficiency, & sanitation. Inidiv for demonstrating PDL.
-
A4: Ss love earning items as it helps create their “person” in the game. Each Ss has a niche by the items they have. They love it.
-
-
-
-
A4: I am trying to implement a leveling up system for all the PDL skills and having different badges and artifacts for each level
-
A4: students are wanting to level up to gain more tools/powers. This week I've seen teamwork flourish more. Ss saving each other.
-
high school kids HATE that (at least at our school)
-
-
for me this was a happy accident that evolved. the Ss have really created their characters
-
-
-
How do you repond to that?
-
-
A4 students are gaining XP points for reading and helping each other out. I've seen more collaboration and motivation
-
Can’t keep up with your awesomeness!! Q5 coming in 2 minutes!
-
maybe my brain isn't working, but I have no idea what PDL stands for?
-
mostly have them choose with whom to work so they will actually get something done...occassionally random group
-
Interesting. W many Ss I've worked w, I've found the opposite. Less work happens w self-selected groups
-
Agreed. Trying to comment back to people but there is just to many great ideas happening on thanks 4 sharing https://t.co/3hdtwll29p
-
-
Can’t keep up with your awesomeness!! Q5 coming in 2 minutes!
-
used classcraft last year and really like it !
-
-
Purpose Driven Learning PDL
-
A4 I am using cards to give my Ss something tangible.
-
A5 I launch bakery missions. 3 diff levels for varying XP points. All require Ss to demonstrate their learning in creative ways.
-
I think it depends on the Ss. Most of mine this year handled selecting their own groups fine. A few didn't.
-
This is huge and something I would encourage you all to do.
-
with random groups you can almost feel the divide...self selected you feel the intertwining
-
I've been using it since Dec, Ss love it too!
-
-
A5 I've always wanted to do a "Quest Pitch." Ss pitch the quest that fits within our current unit, and I give it the green light!
-
A5: Quests have been powerful on 3D gamelab as they have given the Ss choice this leads to creativity
-
I do this in my Greek unit. It is the only unit that the Ss can create any quest they would like.
-
a5) give them an objective and then let the creativity flow? How can you accomplish/show you can achieve this?
-
A5 cont: Sometimes I give options for bakery missions with varying levels of XP.
-
A5: giving a story to an activity gives it purpose for Ss. Motivation towards it and their personal investment in it can increase
-
that was amazing!! How did you create that video?
-
A5: A quest that Ss are doing is a & then I am going 2 have the Ss do with an expert about the thinking behind a game
-
A5: Creativity becomes untethered when we put a few road blocks in Ss way. Having to overcome challenges begs for creative solutions.
-
Late to because reading stories with my kiddos but can't not drop in because love talking w/everyone
-
A5 Aren't assignments also missions with objectives. Quests are just a lot more fun.
-
-
We love having you here! Thanks for dropping in.
-
We recently discovered . Ss tell me they prefer it to other sites because it has a story. Thanks !
-
i started doing some of this 2nd semester, want to make more. fun for me too
-
a5) had a task, students build a house using dif fuel types (solar etc.). 10 questions Ss have to answer. that's all the info U get
-
I used several tools. My fav is the voice over. I paid a guy on fiveer to read it that way.
-
never heard of that! thanks for sharing
-
-
I do this as well but no one has taken advantage of this yet
-
Isn’t it awesome to give to those students.
-
like the broken calculator game. They can't use certain buttons and still get the answer
-
A6: Items could be created to give Ss advantage in Kahoot, extra ingredients for recipes, choice in recipe selection for labs.
-
A5: I just built a quest in to have students dig deeper into Gandhi and the Salt March
-
I really like the idea of voiceovers on Fiver, but I had waaaaay too much fun trying to do the "deep voice movie guy" talk!
-
That just sounds really sweet game. I will try that tomorrow.
-
Love this, I have not heard of snap guide
-
A6: Reoccurring = Articles of the Week, Monthly Twitter Chats, Weekly Adventure Quest, Boss Battles. These are things Ss earn XP
-
nice we just talked about Gandhis salt March today!
-
Snapguide is a great way for students to create tutorials
-
custom with points on 1 side and cool front covers. My class loves collecting Mojo cards when they do homework
-
Can I say I love this ?. Thanks I could chat on this one all night. I think we should do a GHO on it. https://t.co/x2lb7l4Zb9
-
a6) review - items for extra turns or more time. tests - remove a question or answer choices. Math worksheets items (not sure what?)
-
A6: basically anything that is normally free in other classes! Haha
-
This is cool, is it like where Ss create their own videos
-
A6: maps, influential people, review, I could go on….
-
A6: Learning target Reassessment. “Traveling Sage” item allows for Reassessment by just talking with me and now paper work to do it.
-
We do a weekly challenge on map skills. Ss really struggle with this and kahoot of course and other review games
-
True this is a great place to start.
-
A6) something for redo's. Something that involves food would probably interests my Ss.
-
How many people give out actual tokens or just XP for doing something. Deciding if I need tangible tokens w/gaming
-
google it - there are some digital versions.
-
-
-
a6) and really need a bathroom pass item!!!
-
Well, I don't have the awesome video editing and curating skills of - so I have to compensate somewhere!
-
Just XP, they LOVE the digital badges.
-
Last week I heard about the bounty hunter item. Stuff left behind collected by BH. Students must roll to get it back
-
I do xp and the ss check the leaderboard throughout the day. So far so good
-
-
Items shop only opens on Fridays to buy items. Mini boss battles 5 ? Reviews at end of lesson. Earns gold and XP but are HARD
-
-
-
-
what if we had 's class produce the food rewards ... great collaboration spirit
-
Thanks, I was reading on a feed where T has item (food, etc) Ss can "buy" with their gold pieces. Considering it
-
A7 I never encourage power-ups that damage another player. Instead I like power-ups where a player can enhance a chosen teammate
-
A7: Could give some extra ingredient options or more time in cooking challenges
-
I love giving the items out. Ss really love having the badges taped to their binders. It is a huge pop in engagement.
-
tangible! but proves that leaderboards are just as empowering, might depend on age level
-
sounds great! think the postage would start adding up! I have some dried crickets she could use as ingredient
-
A6: Personal assistant badge, They choose the class and I go to class and I help them do their work for that class.
-
I like your focus on helping rather than putting a team down.
-
One of my kids did this today to save a teammate from our random event of the day. https://t.co/7GF75xOoVa
-
-
A7 I never encourage power-ups that damage another player. Instead I like power-ups where a player can enhance a chosen teammate
-
A7: Lots of options during class reviews and boss battles. Extra guess, 50/50, ask for help, 30 sec on Google, new Q, etc.
-
What an awesome idea and fun!
-
A6 students can earn a 1-UP to do a re-take on unit test (Elite Boss)
-
With this idea. What about one google sentence and can only click on one of top three links to find answer.
-
I really like the 30 seconds on Google one, haha!
-
I've also had them have to use points to pay bounty on items!
-
A7 In the book Power ups allow Ss to catch up with Leaders, also can limit powers so others catch up.
-
A7 In the book Power ups allow Ss to catch up with Leaders, also can limit powers so others catch up.
-
A7: On test can confer with one other student for 1 min.
-
A7: plus attack (pvp) and plus rolls (pve) on same items. Students fav is critical strike on bosses. Most popular kid in class
-
All great ideas thanks for sharing.
-
I allowed the S to ask me if one question on their test was answered correctly.
-
Been following along during chat. What fantastic ideas everyone is sharing!
-
Such a cool idea, -how many teachers right now would scoff at that idea? However, it works in the context of your gameworld
-
I allow Ss to request extra time on a test or to turn in an assignment one day late.
-
Agreed! That is what I have been doing as well.
-
WOW! Blown away by all of the awesome ideas!! Adventure Quest coming up!!
-
A7: Ss that has item can choose another Ss to put a spell on them If they're not behaving then that person will raid their gold or XP
-
-
A7:Team bet! Your team can get top score divided by 10 added or the bottom score x 10 then divided by 10. Gives reason to help others
-
So great to talk with so many educators who are using games!!
-
It is a big item and student think about when and who to use it with. Lessor item, students have to both buy it to use.
-
-
I finally got to join this chat!! Awesome ideas, and you guys are fast.
-
I am going to use this . . . awesome idea!! https://t.co/NpIzT4X36B
-
