Question 1: What do you call this time in your classroom and what is your reason behind it?
Where do you go to explore the inner contours of your soul? Read SKY POND - The Sacred Places Series https://t.co/6H7qAS9jGP
Forgot to add- definite newbie in this area but very interested.
RT Question 1: What do you call this time in your classroom and what is your reason behind it?
A1: I call this time Wonder Wednesday in my class, we do an hour each wed and its based on their wonders

A1: I've tried it the last 2 yrs in the 4th quarter and I call it genius hour, Ss love it
A1 Mine is called Spirit Hour. I pose a challenge. Ss choose tools and make a plan.
Laura, from MN. No experience with genius hour.
Oh, no:( Hope they feel better soon.
A1: I call it Genius Hour now, may change it next year, as it's explore more than higher level.
A1 I call it "Making" as we do maker spaces along with genius hour kinds of things.
Hi, Laura! Glad to see you!
Andrea from the Bay Area, Ca popping in for a little while tonight
A1) I have no experience with Genius Hour. Can someone update me?
Hey friends! Kristin from splitting my time between and tonight!
Hi Andrea! Glad to see you!
A1: I call mine I was hearing so many versions. I wanted choice and passion. I wanted it to be a learning time
I'd love to have a Maker Space, too!!! Space it so limited. Boo!!!
Hi Andrea, glad you are here.
Hi, Kristin! Good to see you!
Genius Hour is letting your Ss have time to explore their passions w the choice belonging to them.
I love the idea of Wondering! Need to know more!
I have limited space, but have tried to find a way to make it work.
A1 I call my time Genius Hour. It's our time to "get smarter"... to become experts about a topic. Choice is their motivation.
Only in the north can we monitor and adjust so easily!
RT A1: I call mine I was hearing so many versions. I wanted choice and passion and a learning time
RT Genius Hour is letting your Ss have time to explore their passions w the choice belonging to them.
A1: our first grade has innovate time on Thursdays for makerspace activities .. we also have maker mornings
I have so many who want to sew, knit, garden and even weld! Only a few want to research,
Nice RT A1:our first grade has innovate time on Thursdays for makerspace activities .. we also have maker mornings
Genius Hour has also been compared to Google allowing their employees 20% of their time to work on their passions. LOVE THAT IDEA!
Do any of you who are doing Genius Hour work at low income, high ELL population schools? How is it working with non/low readers?
I heard STEAM, GenusHour, PBL, MakerSpace...it was all sounding similar.
Not so many ELL this year, but high poverty, we will talk about that for sure tonight!
I love that name!!! Very cool!
True passion & curiosity! https://t.co/yGvmUPUuL1
I have so many who want to sew, knit, garden and even weld! Only a few want to research,
. I work with high needs students! Bring in lots of realia, images and short video clips. Teach Ss to read those
when my Ss get a choice what to do, they work hard. I do have the reading turned on my tablets so it can be read to them
Question 2: How do you introduce Genius Hour to your students?
A1 Having choice and ownership is so empowering & not provided in all classrooms.
ALL my students LOVE this time. We get cheers weekly. All our successful as well.
Glad that you're getting a chance to experience edchats in your class. VERY powerful! The PLN is phenomenal!
I think it may work better actually. GH does not have to be research. Do those ss like to draw or sing etc? https://t.co/FBkg9mCjnb
Do any of you who are doing Genius Hour work at low income, high ELL population schools? How is it working with non/low readers?
What are they reading? The only thing I have that reads to them is pebblego.
Great question! Sounds like my school and Reading is such a priority. Where to find the time?
RT Genius Hour has been compared to Google allowing their employees 20% of time to work on their passions. LOVE THAT IDEA!
A1 I need to do more of this (some of this) where they have full lead.
A2:This year, we worked on wondering A LOT before choosing a project, asking lots of ? first
A2: we used literature, anchor charts and discussion as we began.
Oh wow I didn't know that about Google. I wish educators had that time.
this sounds like our maker mornings - students choose what they're interested in - legos, magnetix, braiding, etc.
Awesome! https://t.co/ub0xe0enfQ
when my Ss get a choice what to do, they work hard. I do have the reading turned on my tablets so it can be read to them
RT Question 2: How do you introduce Genius Hour to your students?
has some great read to me options available
A2 I was thinking of starting with a wonder wall?
I have connected to literacy and content w my topics this year
I think I'm getting stuck since they are researching on their own...what do they use independently?
RT A2:This year, we worked on wondering A LOT before choosing a project, asking lots of ? first
Hi. TL from MD. Like spring time at and
I do that in the mornings too. Have a lot of building going on. https://t.co/jtOcTavMjY
this sounds like our maker mornings - students choose what they're interested in - legos, magnetix, braiding, etc.
No excuse but this year has been such a beta year for me with STEAM/handson/inquiry/maker multi age year.
We will get to resources in a few ?'s
I’d have them work with a partner and then create source sets for students based on interest. Use paddle or weekly site.
I shared how a unit we did about Hurricane Katrina was inspired from MY passion, I wanted them to learn through exploring theirs.
Wow! Amy! Great to see you!!!
Ramona from VA a little late
When I heard it, I loved the idea, Google Cardboard was created as an employees 20% project!
A2 Our Wonder Wednesdays is great for developing our thinking and questioning.
Thanks to you I will be exploring that this month. ;)
Joining in late...no experience with Genius Hour but wanting to learn and start it with my Ss
Yes, that's exactly what I did at the beginning of the year, we also made Wonder Boxes to add our wonders to
Honestly, the plan happened on a google doc with and I . A conversation took off.
This fall was my first time exploring Genius Hour. I told Ss to think of something they always wanted to learn about, their choice
is GREAT for wondering! We wonder with them every Wednesday. LOVE it!
mine are very interested in coding, robots and even time just to craft.
That's a great idea! They can see we do this too!
Sorry, I'm all over the map tonight. ;)
We use site to explore "wonders" and discuss and share our thinking.
W/our home/learning blend many wonders continue to be explored at home. I support w/ experts where I can - eg solving rubik's cube.
Always nice to bounce off ideas with good friend:) https://t.co/me9YbvSElB
Honestly, the plan happened on a google doc with and I . A conversation took off.
I started with the book, What Do You Do With An Idea. I blog about it, but haven't updated lately. https://t.co/AEmw0qudOx
Just a cardboard box that they decorated and add their Wonder Post its to.
I love new Steal Like and Artist journal. Would be a great model for creativity w students
I hope you will share pics of your wonder boxes. They are so cool!
might b jumping ahead- where do you find the time? our time is full 2 the gills!Know it's powerful/want 2 do- but what do I give up
I thought maybe it was like a break out box. https://t.co/zldpkla9CM
Just a cardboard box that they decorated and add their Wonder Post its to.
Class wonders are recorded and honoured and supported as best as I can so far... I try to support their wonders.
It was truly a BIG brainstorming session. I am sure we could create a highlights sheet. https://t.co/aa49iZenht
can you share the Google doc?
I think it is great to connect w home, I let my Ps know what their topic is to help
Check out book A Place for Wonder. Great ideas to launch student investigation
My students are only in the building 4 days/week. Home is an integral part of learning.
A2 Last year I introduced it during science and we started by making boats that could float.
Used content topic & Ss will choose a topic based on that, so it connects to what we are learning, last one was light
That is my problem! What to give up?
Question 3: How do your students choose their topics?
I have been learning, reflecting and processing it all year. This was a big change for me to do this.
A3: It was completely their choice. It was hard to find some books for research, now on to find materials!
A2 I started with a challenge also. It's a bit easier to do. https://t.co/fh4rCKMHGR
A2 Last year I introduced it during science and we started by making boats that could float.
Jane I think we have done a couple projects together, just called it challenges
A3 Model curiosity daily, invite students to keep record of questions, then invite to pursue a passion Often start w image study.
A3: Some from topics we are learning. Some I mention as a possibility. Some from other Ss. Some are right there in their heart.
As part of the final product, they are created an ebook w their info so that also goes along w our writing
RT Question 3: How do your students choose their topics?
But of course every moment we have with our students support the development of thinking and questioning..
I love that! We are going to blog about it, but NOW... :)
A3: last year I had all 25 w their own topics that were anything they wanted, this yr streamline a bit, went w content subject:light
I have some things they have to do. A plan, a product to share and a reflective blog.
Yes, but I have not found time to do it on a consistent basis! We have done several projects of my choosing!
A3 Some ideas come from our informational book reading. I have a student now who wants to create insects.
This year I'm more mindful about guiding ss to meaningful wonders. Not so random... https://t.co/bJKEHK7D9f
A3 Model curiosity daily, invite students to keep record of questions, then invite to pursue a passion Often start w image study.
A3: we just finished a big history unit and Ss are now choosing any historical figure and creating a bottle person and writing
Grrr... that's part of the problem- even our writing is somewhat scripted right now.
A3 about half of my Ss knew exactly what they wanted to study...the other half I had conversations with gving them some suggestions
Yes ! We have to teach them to ask good questions & wonder about things that matter. No time to waste
modeling curiosity so valuable
In the beginning of the year many first graders don't know how to "wonder" or don't think they know.
We just worked on fable, a student wants to study fables and infer their lessons. Another wants to learn multiplication.
Do you have access to PebbleGo? It’s perfect for this age. Right amount of info and reads out the text!
I have 1 welder, 1 movie maker, 2 gardners, 6 to sew, 2 knitters, 1 robot builder, shark researcher, etc.
Yes, not always easy for sure.
Mine use a lot for research. https://t.co/nBIE3CHhkA
Do you have access to PebbleGo? It’s perfect for this age. Right amount of info and reads out the text!
It's not so easy at first. I pulled out your comprehension book:) https://t.co/fpcndm1rZB
Yes ! We have to teach them to ask good questions & wonder about things that matter. No time to waste
Joining in late tonight. Megan from Florida.
A3 Thinking about pairing them up by interest and have them formulate an essential question from the wonder wall.
Exactly, we spent most of the 1st trimester focusing on that before our first big
no, but I've heard of it. We use he new Google search engine. Great speech access for the kiddos
this is why I wait until 2nd sem. use 1st sem to teach wonders, ways to show work, etc. https://t.co/kav8fIxi84
In the beginning of the year many first graders don't know how to "wonder" or don't think they know.
you do your Genius Hrs on Wed for an hour- about how many Wednesday did your light "Unit" take?
yes! Thinking aloud how we do this is key to becoming independent
Hi, Megan! Glad you are here! Well, are you going to update us about the profile pic? https://t.co/27tA22D7Im
Joining in late tonight. Megan from Florida.
Yes, we've done two reports with pebble go. Very helpful.
As far as time, I don't know how long it should take, but it'll be all year. :)
RT yes! Thinking aloud how we do this is key to becoming independent
In Ontario, our kids are coming from 2 years of full day kindergarten based on inquiry, so that helps a lot!
Haven't seen that, thanks for sharing. Will check it out!
Lol yes!! I got engaged and we are getting married in July before my sister gets deployed! https://t.co/wFo5TQizel
Hi, Megan! Glad you are here! Well, are you going to update us about the profile pic? https://t.co/27tA22D7Im
Joining in late tonight. Megan from Florida.
I do my best to model for those who are stuck. Now my room is filled w/ brain spinning curious wondering students.
My plan was for about 6, but reality is 8:) Can't rush it!
Where do you store all of the materials and project resources? My room is packed with bodies!
That's what we did also, just finishing up our first project now and will hopefully get 2 more in...
That sounds great! What a good foundation they must have.
I think this is from Google also???
That is an issue. I have a large container, and some other creative storage places. https://t.co/BRYjP7wZeV
Where do you store all of the materials and project resources? My room is packed with bodies!
LOL- that was my next question too- 8 weeks of wonderful stuff and supplies.
RT I do my best to model for those who are stuck. Now room is filled w/ brain spinning curious wondering students.
I'll check into it later!! Thanks!
I have converted our guest room t home into my school storage area. Not enough room at school. https://t.co/RSFvl92YyQ
Where do you store all of the materials and project resources? My room is packed with bodies!
Uggh, I feel you, my room can look like a disaster, I have some cabinet and shelf space, but lucky this yr w small #'s
It's a real problem!!! :(
Good question! RT Where do you store all of the materials and project resources? My room is packed with bodies!
We have been spending exploring tools, different apps especially to create I feel like I can let them go
Deep learning takes time! I've learned that too! It's about quality learning not quantity learning .
It certainly helps for creating wonder/inquiry, but been a transition for all of us for the past few yrs as it unfolds.
So many great tweets tonight! Hard to keep up w all of it!
It looked beautiful in the newsreel! https://t.co/bACxZYsfsE
Uggh, I feel you, my room can look like a disaster, I have some cabinet and shelf space, but lucky this yr w small #'s
Sometimes we need to have a SPARK for their wonderings!
We are blending learning this wk writing letters to local businesses asking for donations of materials to begin our work.
Thank you! Maybe I should retweet that.
Storage wars begin - their stuff vs. mine. lol
Unfortunately this year is A HUGE group! I' ll find a place though!
I have a workroom between my classroom & one next door & I store things there. Does your building have a storage room?
Another great idea gives them more choice
In BC we just have all day K. We don't have jk and sk, just k. Done well it's fabulous. No increased curriculum.
Wish we had one- our storage rooms have been turned into classrooms for spec ed teachers. We are crunched
You are a great T! You never let that prevent you from doing something new!
Big plastic tubs that you can push under counters/tables are good for storing paper towel tubes and other small items.
1 year or 2 years in K? Our K curriculum is still in draft when they went to all day inquiry/play a few years ago.
Just worried about hauling 30 boxes down every week though. That might work the best!
Yikes! The never ending problem of space, my hope is for a school MakerSpace area someday
We had a time when we were doing the cardboard project...now THAT was a mess!
Question 4: What are some great resources that you use to help your students research their topics?
I've heard some already, let's see what else can help our young readers:)
RT Question 4: What are some great resources that you use to help your students research their topics?
Have students keep an ongoing list of their "wonderings". As they find answers have then develop more ?s https://t.co/EWt6lWDh7K
Question 3: How do your students choose their topics?
But an EDUCATIONAL mess:) You rock!
looking forward to learning about resources!
A4; We have had some use Google of course, and with my help
Great 4 flexible learning space too Stack cpl up put piece of fabric on top 4 tablecloth & viola- new table https://t.co/rVIkGCQXoX
Big plastic tubs that you can push under counters/tables are good for storing paper towel tubes and other small items.
Only one. We've always been only 1. We went full day a few years before you. When we did NO added curriculum.
A4: Libraries have been great, internet and personal connections.
i bet a glorious mess though!
A4 Make a lot of sites for kids but love for student research
A4 My favorite resource are YouTube Videos.
Might be part of the proposal - where will you keep your things? Let them think of a solution.
Some of their learning came from what we did in class, or a virtual trip using or
Or window sills, LOL! I really want shelves built in to the walls to put things,
A4: if you use chromebooks or laptops add the read and write for google ext. It will read text and lots of other cool stuff
Yes, but you have a ton more room than I do!
We did this - they told me to empty my cupboards. Hense the storage wars, lol.
do you use little kids YouTube?
I would like to join your twitter chat. How's it going, sorry I am a half an hour late.
Love the KIds Should See, all great options!
I have a class of comedians
Let them know that space isn't available. What could be kept at home?
I have it on my iPad, but their iPads block all youtube.
A4:This yr I created QR codes linked right to sources on the internet for diff. Ss, it helped w independence
So awesome, I think I need to expand my definition of GH. I see creating with cardboard & tools as a Makerspace.
You think?? Did you know that I have a triangular shaped room? I cannot possibly have more room than you!
I think they both can work together, after they research wonders, they create like MS, so my Ss do both
A4: Wonderopolis, Wonder Box, Kiddle, KidRex, parents, teachers, community members, Tweeting to experts...!
I have one who said he'd pull his hair out FOR me, lol
And on iPads you can select text and Siri can read it to you.
great idea to use QR to help!
I'm still searching for something to read on my android tablets, nothing seems to work yet https://t.co/YMqyOvrpCN
And on iPads you can select text and Siri can read it to you.
I think they overlap greatly :)
A4:If you can get any extra volunteers during your GH time, it def helps, especially w reading
WONDERful! We're THRILLED you're WONDERing!
There must be an adaptibility feature that reads text. I have a Nexxus tablet. If it's the same I'll explore foryou.
Thanks, Amy! We appreciate the KIND words!
Hi this is my first time going
I am very thankful for a middle school helper. It is a BUSY time.
A4:PebbleGo, DiscoveryEd, BrainPop, KidRex, are my go tos, but also LOTS OF BOOKS!
A4: I will be getting as many voluntees as possible each Friday to help. Otherwise it's INSANE alone. :O
A4: They may not be able to read all text in a book, but can do some great inferring!
RT I think they both can work together, after they research wonders, they create like MS, so my Ss do both
And if you have iPad you can save sites "to home screen" . They look like "apps" but are a direct link to learning.
what a good idea...that would be awesome for them to use! Adding that
Welcome to ! Glad to have you here.
. How do you prep your volunteers? Do they just jump in ?
RT RT : A4:PebbleGo, DiscoveryEd, BrainPop, KidRex, are my go tos, but also LOTS OF BOOKS!
All WONDERful resources! Thanks for sharing, Terry!
I do too. As I've had time to reflect this year, I find myself thinking about play and inquiry based Tchg. .
HONORED to be included in this list! Thanks, Kristin!
great idea I created a page of video links to Ss topics....during free time Ss loved checking out other topics
We should check that out!
Just another option, don't think they are that different, just heard about Kiddle recently
Couldn't agree more! GREAT resource!
A4 Human resources, too: Parents, other teachers, community members, etc.
I haven't had any in yet, but I will have a trng ahead & have them in very small groups w/in my room
A4 has many leveled nonfiction books. It's free for educators! Some have audio to listen to.
A4: Just remembered my best one, Skyping with experts and other Ss like Ss and the author!
RT A4 has many leveled nonfiction books. It's free 4 educators! Some have audio to listen to.
Yes, those inspire many passion projects! https://t.co/LgbYNrj539
A4: Just remembered my best one, Skyping with experts and other Ss like Ss and the author!
I forgot to check with them for welding!
I agree it feels insane at times alone with 15 different topics and helping read much harder text
I have used them just as reading helpers, but give spec direct NOT to take notes for them
So many WONDERful resources being sharing here! Thanks for including us!
iPad has MANY amazing accessiibility features built in. Check your settings.
Don't forget you can get transcripts through !
A4:Connected my Ss to others via Twitter to ask and discuss their projects, another great reason I love Twitter!
If you include the hashtag, everyone on chat can view & respond to your tweets:)
Thanks everyone for a mind expanding chat! Off to play with my son. <3
RT : A4: Just remembered my best one, Skyping with experts and other Ss like Ss and the author!
Thanks for all your great comments tonight Have a great week!
. Thanks for the shoutout. Popping in to listen and learn
Question 5: How do they share their knowledge with others?
. It was great for all involved. My student has a lot of scientific knowledge and it's great for him to share w/others.
I haven't heard of kiddle until now! Will check out
A5: blog has made that so easy this year! Also twitter and our class facebook page
A4 Don't forget Twitter…another great resource! Many experts here, including all of you.
A4 So important to teach nonfiction features—provides entry & access to thinking & has info ALL ages can read
A5: I would think , Twitter and Skype/GHO with buddy classes would all be awesome!
A5 mine blog about their projects using the best blogging app!
A5:This time my Ss are creating ebooks using and also creating something else ala MakerSpace like
I give my Ss choice of how they want to share. Poster, booklet, , voice recording, etc.
A5: The obvious way would be right?
A5: we are blogging through . I have had them post their pictures of what they've been researching now. This wk we'll add
I haven’t used this! Need to hear more Leka!
RT Question 5: How do they share their knowledge with others?
Great, Jane! I would love to hear about your journey!
how do you choose which expert to skype when you have 15 different topics
A5. I love when they have the opportunity to present to our class I have my Ss ask questions to the resented and help answer
Love all the examples to share! Please join me on March 10 to talk Seesaw Style:)
I've done many 1 student 1 expert call. Meet them where they are at.
My students present when they are done. They must have a product, Slide show, movie, etc. Then they complete a reflection on blog.
A5 we also have 7th grade pen pals and they love to write about what they are leaning to them.
me too! Still looking for a good blogging tool.
A5: Last year they had a light/sound show for other 1st graders, Ps, that was fun! They were the Ts
is wonderful for 1st graders!!
you for telling me how to tweet. As I mentioned this is new & educational for me can u see me
A5: They are even learning when creating their product to share.
Love your flexibility and ability to collaborate! So much learning!
A5 We do "share sessions" at various checkpoints. Peers give suggestions on how to make better or ask Qs that lead to exploration.
Not all of my Ss got to Skype and they were fine with that, I think it depends on topic and who's available,
If I can find an expert for a students curiousities they get their own call.
A5 We encourage Ts and Ss to connect and share their learning on Twitter
It gets easier each time. This is a fast chat tonight as well which makes it a little trickier 1st time
Thank you. Trying hard to meet the unique needs of my unique learners. Isn't that what it's all about?
Yes, love that both Ss learned and grew through conversation
Good job! Now I am hoping that I remember to add the too so people can see my replies.
It also means we do far less full class calls but that;s okay.
A5 Curious about this one, maybe , , posters, presentations, iMovie, or appsmash a few of them.
one iPad. 2 desktops. I took quick peek already. Looks great.
Sounds like a great chat! Conferences this week, but will check the feed
A5 Sometimes we display our creations in our Media Center so entire school can see them. They are so proud of what they accomplish.
OMG. This is exciting! Thanks friends
Has anyone answered this question yet? I would love to know.
So I had 2 more ? but time is limited so going to share my last one now...
Me too and my same learner also skyped with their own expert to learn from them too. It goes both ways.
Question 6: What student examples can you share from Genius Hour in your classroom to help inspire others?
This is awesome! Thanks for sharing. I didn't know about any of these.
If you haven't explored it yet,may want to investigate tweetdeck when participating in chats. Makes it much easier
this chat is going by so fast. I'm picking up information here and there
YOu can say that again! LOL!
I will archive it later:)
RT Question 6: What student examples can you share from Genius Hour in your classroom to help inspire others?

Thanks Kendra! Hope you have a great week!
Thank you for explaining that to me.
