Welcome to #Utedchat – The topic tonight is “Fostering Trust with Students” Please introduce yourself/current assignment – Since NCAA March Madness (college b-ball tournament) is upon us, share your championship pick/favorite tourney moment/ or best sports moment in general
Krystal from Granite checking in. Gonna try my best to keep up tonight! As for March madness, I only pay attention to @USUBasketball - win or lose, I love my Aggies! #UTedChat
Hello! I'm Kelsey @KelsGreBeech and I currently am just working on some Professional Development to keep my license current. #Utedchat this is my first time ever on twitter so wish me luck! I have no knowledge of college basketball, GO Volleyball ;)
Hey #UTedChat peeps! Derek from @sedck12 and @ucet chiming I’m from the road as @sedcclint and I head back after another successful UCET Board Meeting. Stoked to see #UCET18 happen next week! #YOUcet
I remember watching @USUBasketball win during March madness my freshman year at @SnowCollege - I was hooked from that moment on! Loved going to the games at the spectrum! #utedchat
I lived in NC for over 20 years--just moved to UT a year and a half ago. So...NCAA tournament is always a big deal. Though we are a house divided: UNC vs. Duke. :) #utedchat
Hi, Kylee Stuart, former 4th grade teacher and preschool teacher now at home with my kids taking classes to keep my license active. First time here. And I still haven't filled out my bracket, so no pick yet! #UTedChat
Hello! Todd Call - Digital Teaching and Learning Implementation Specialist at USBE. I love March Madness, but I am entirely caught up in the 19-2 Jazz run right now. #UTedChat
Heidi Kelley checking in for #Utedchat! I'm currently just working on some professional development to renew my license. This is my first time using Twitter so wish me luck!
Oh, and as for my favorite #SportsBall moment, uh, don’t really have one but I’m suddenly very thirsty for some Sprite. How about you @EdTecHakk? #UTedChat
@FarrBfarr, I think you have to be willing to share things about yourself with students (not too personal) to get them to share with you and open up the dialogue
#utedchat
A1: HONESTY! We have to own mistakes when we make them and show students it's okay to be human, then to fix those mistakes so there is always a way forward. Also, a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T goes a long way. So does learning names and something about each student. #utedchat
#utedchat Q1 - First and foremost, listening skills. Students have important things to say and often we talk when we should listen. Then empathy for students and their position. These skills can set up trust.
Don’t worry. I’m not tweeting and driving. My colleague extraordinaire and pal @sedcclint is actually doing he driving so I can do the chatting. #UTedChat
A1: We must have the ability to be present with students. Fully engaged so students know we really see them--and hear them. @burgessdave and the #tlap crew call this Immersion--get in the pool and swim. #utedchat
A1: You gotta be you. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and own them. Show S’s how to learn from them. Be present and engaged. Kids can sense fakeness from a mile away #UTedChat
A1: I hope that my students can trust that I will prepare them for what's to come and that I don't waste their time at home or at school with busy work. Also that I'm consistent and will do anything to help them, even if that may be letting them struggle a little. #utedchat
Q2 What do good teacher-student relationships look like and why do these relationships matter? Do they have an impact on student learning? If so, explain #UTedchat
A1 Teachers has to be willing to actually listen to their students and be willing to recognize they have good ideas that may need to be implemented. When Ss know their being heard that helps with trust. #UTedChat
#utedchat Good relationships are built on support and respect. Even when kids are driving you nuts or you want them to do something differently, you can be respectful.
A2: I know through personal experience that when I feel a part of something and trust the person teaching me or over me, that I will go above and beyond. When I don't, I do just what I have to. #utedchat
A2 Looks like love and respect. They matter because if no one cares then nothing gets done.Kids will work hard for someone if they know they care #utedchat
A1 Teachers also need to treat their students like people. Give them chances to prove their trustworthiness. And Ts also need to prove their trustworthiness by keeping to their word. #UTedChat
A2: Teachers have to be approachable. Good relationships exist when students can and do request assistance, perhaps advice. A little banter is good. Being able to laugh together is great. Students don't learn well from teachers they don't like. #utedchat
Q2 What do good teacher-student relationships look like and why do these relationships matter? Do they have an impact on student learning? If so, explain #UTedchat
#utedchat Q2 - Although it is not necessary for a teacher to have a relationship with their students, it does help to create a comfort zone for the student that allows for trial and error, failure and rediscovery. I always want to learn when I am around comfortable people.
A2: Good relationships look like respect in a bottle. Ss have a lot going on internally and externally and they work better if they feel understood and loved. #utedchat
A2: good teacher-student relationships are the heart of education. You can't learn from someone you don't care about. The teachers that have impacted me the most where the ones that I felt closest to. #UTedChat
A2 healthy student-teacher relationship is one of the best things about teaching. Teachers inspire and believe in students, challenge their abilities and get them to consider different perspectives and possibilities. Students work hard and learn and grow #utedchat
That's where we have to be the adults, even if no one else will. I cringe when I hear (or hear about) teachers using sarcasm to shut down their students. We can joke without being mean. #utedchat
A2: relationships are essential for student learning. My students know that I would jump through a wall for them, and they would for me too. With that trust we can do amazing things when it comes to learning #UTedChat
I’ve always heard the toughest kids need the most love and support. That and they show that need in the most backward ways possible. Gotta love them through the tough outer shell! #UTedChat
I never did get any pie, but I did have a wonderful day with technology leaders in my district. So that was better and healthier than pie, although I still want pie. #utedchat
Honesty, being relatable, following through and being true to our word. I am also a big believer in positive reinforcement and it had a big impact on the trust in my classroom. #UTedchat
A2: I had a mom come up and thank me recently - it’s been 5 years since i taught her daughter, but she still remembers me and all that i did for her. That meant a lot to me and showed a good relationship that was built #utedchat
A2 I see a relationship where either (teacher or student) is willing and able to act as the teacher or the student. Having that trust and commitment to be learning from and with each other. #UTedChat
A2: Good Teacher-Student relationships are built on trust but that’s just the beginning! There must be high expectations, respect, & the ability to take risks, be innovative & make mistakes. It’s not perfect and goes for both students & teachers. #UTedChat
Q3 As educators, how do we ensure a “Yes” to the below questions that every student is trying to answer? #UTedchat
Am I important to someone here?
Do I belong here?
Am I good at something here?
Who will listen to me here?
Is my presence here making a difference?
The more open you are to making mistakes in front of your students the better life will be. Failure is NOT a bad word and we need to show students that by our example! #UTedChat
A1: You gotta be you. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and own them. Show S’s how to learn from them. Be present and engaged. Kids can sense fakeness from a mile away #UTedChat
How fun! I love seeing former students in the halls - a smile and a wave can totally change someone's day. True for the students and the teacher =). #UTedChat
most definitely...it's difficult to trust flipfloppers. And it's good to be a constant in students lives, esp. if they don't have stability elsewhere. #UTedChat
#utedchat#utedchat Hey all Michelle Ormond here from American Fork High School I teach bio AP bio, and am the PLC and instructional coach. Favorite NCAA was 1997 Weber vs Mich State https://t.co/MerLCHKj87 If you know me, you may be able to spot me cheering on the sidelines!
I read an article that gave me new insight on relationships. It called them the "onramp" to student achievement. Essentially, relationships are the first step but our work doesn't end there. We must leverage relationships to push students to reach their full potential. #utedchat
Last week’s #utedchat soundtrack was Broadway show tunes on Pandora... tonight is @BonJovi as I get ready for their concert Friday night! Anyone else listen to music while tweeting?
If you do a student survey at the beginning of the year and get to know what students like and then do something off that through the year they will feel validated- play a song, mention their fav. Super hero, attend a game. #gamechangers#UTedChat
A2 Positive Student<->Teacher relationships happen when both parties open up and are willing to learn from one another. When that happens you can see it in the FUN everyone is having. These relationships are CRUCIAL to effective learning! #UTedChat
Q2 What do good teacher-student relationships look like and why do these relationships matter? Do they have an impact on student learning? If so, explain #UTedchat
A3 For some students the teacher student relationship can help answer yes to those questions but for others it's about helping them build relationships with peers along with other adults in the school. #UTedChat
A3: It goes back to demonstrating we care about the student - learning names, something specific about them, inquiring, providing effective #growthmindset praise & constructive feedback, recognizing non-verbal cues, active listening, & providing opportunities to shine. #utedchat
Q3 As educators, how do we ensure a “Yes” to the below questions that every student is trying to answer? #UTedchat
Am I important to someone here?
Do I belong here?
Am I good at something here?
Who will listen to me here?
Is my presence here making a difference?
A3 greet Ss at the door, use their names, help them respect other opinions in the class, teach them to disagree respectfully, take risks and encourage risk taking, come prepared to teach each day and they will come ready to learn #utedchat
#utedchat Q3 - Its the simple human things that make the difference: knowing names, asking questions, having a conversation, connection through discussions, being present in the classroom, and for me, checking my worries at the door. This puts me in the mindset to help students.
A2: Good Teacher-Student relationships are built on trust but that’s just the beginning! There must be high expectations, respect, & the ability to take risks, be innovative & make mistakes. It’s not perfect and goes for both students & teachers. #UTedChat
A3: Amazing questions to ask myself each day as I work with my students and hope they can answer YES as they think about their relationship with me #utedchat
A3 A weirdly easy yet important way to make students feel important is to use their names. The majority of students go through a whole day and never hear their name even one time. #utedchat
A3: A huge part is validating what our students share with us. Esp. if they are going out on a limb. We need to encourage growth mindset and vulnerability in our students and reciprocate in kind. #UTedChat
A3: I think you have to show each student how important you are to them and how much you care about them. Point out the positives as much as you can and remember the 5+ positives to every one negative rule. #Utedchat
Hahahaha! I have frozen pies in my own freezer. But they are frozen and I just can't bring myself to put them in the microwave... Can you imagine the mess a Turtle pie would make? Razzleberry is my fave, but I can't stay up that late. #utedchat
In reply to
@ronaldfisher, @downrightdave, @FarrBfarr
A3 You have to be willing to take time and show the students they care more than ANY curriculum you’re supposed to teach. Because remember, we teach students not subjects! When they know they actually matter to us, they will answer YES to all the below Qs. #UTedChat
Q3 As educators, how do we ensure a “Yes” to the below questions that every student is trying to answer? #UTedchat
Am I important to someone here?
Do I belong here?
Am I good at something here?
Who will listen to me here?
Is my presence here making a difference?
A3: I think that all begins on day 1. So important to learn each student’s name and build a community of caring and trust in the classroom. Every student needs a champion in their corner! #utedchat
The best teacher-student relationship of all time ... https://t.co/tn4VqWChte
No really, we need to rethink what should be our interaction with our students .. . Wah Wah, Wha ... #utedchat
A3: Yes, you are important to me. I'll show you as I give you another chance to pass the test.
Yes, you belong; we miss you when you are absent.
Yes, I will listen to you. I'll close my laptop and listen right now.
Yes, you make a difference. Your voice enriches us. #UTedChat
A3: I had a dad come up to me the other day at a social function. Thanked me for really knowing his girl at my school. He said that she knows my name, Im always outside with her, and knows that I take an interest in her each day by asking questions about her learning. #utedchat
A3: We ask them. Rephrase the questions so they can't be answered with a yes/no and ask students to respond. Then take a good hard look at the responses. Ideally, reflect on the responses as a full staff. #utedchat
Q3 As educators, how do we ensure a “Yes” to the below questions that every student is trying to answer? #UTedchat
Am I important to someone here?
Do I belong here?
Am I good at something here?
Who will listen to me here?
Is my presence here making a difference?
A3:Get to know students one at a time on individual levels. Be genuine & see students not only for what they are but what they CAN & WILL become! Everyone wants to be seen & heard on their level... It’s the little things that create connections & that lasts a lifetime. #UTedChat
A3: I make sure I say good morning to each student before we get started. As share one thing from the day before. Weekly spotlight that every student gets to do. #utedchat
Q4 If you had to choose between compliant, engaged, or empowered, which would you want to define your students? Why? How do you show students you appreciate them in your classroom? #UTedchat
Honesty, being relatable, following through and being true to our word. I am also a big believer in positive reinforcement and it had a big impact on the trust in my classroom. #UTedchat
Along with those high expectations that they are realistic & that we are willing to put in the supports to empower them to get the hard work done. #utedchat
A3: Assume students don't show up to fail, so if they are under-performing ask questions, how can I help you be successful, what stands in your way, what motivates you, what should be "our" plan of attack to help you be successful. #Utedchat
Nate Auck, DTL Team at USBE late to the game preppin’ for a trip to France!
A3 By both reinforcing the parts of every student’s answer that are correct and supportively questioning them in helping them improve their understanding of the parts that aren’t. #utedchat
That is one thing I did pretty good in my first couple of years and then stopped doing for some stupid reason. Get outside and play with your students! Recess Rocks! #UTedChat
That is a hard one. I have had a hard year with some of my 3rd graders. What they did almost beat me. I am losing confidence. Thanks for reminding me to see their strengths and potential. #utedchat
A3: Sending home positive notes and emails also leaves a positive impact on both parents and students. When you think about, most communication with parents is based around negative things. Throwing out a few positives is really powerful. #UTedchat
#utedchat A4 - Empowered. To work, to learn, to make choices, to fail, to succeed. I show my appreciation in the simplest way possible: I tell them that I appreciate them and say thank you a lot in my classroom.
A4: Ooh! Good question! I like engaged and empowered, but I’d have to say I would be so happy if all my students left my class feeling empowered. #utedchat
A3 Give each one of your students equal treatment. Show your interest in each one of them. Teach them that diversity is normal and creates a better environment. Help them find what they are good at by providing feedback and praise. LISTEN to them. Show them respect. #UTedchat
A4 Empowered. Learning can be messy and a bit chaotic, compliance is for the library. I want Ss trying new things and feeling like they can succeed #utedchat
A4: empowered students definitely. Compliant students are boring. Engaged students are so fun. Empowered students do great and wonderful things because they know they can, they have the tools/knowhow and they have goals in mind. #UTedChat
A4: Empowered should be the ultimate goal since that's the point of an education. Something I'm working toward. I show appreciation by thanking them, even when they come late. I try to hand out PRIDE coupons, Key Cards, & nominations for Student of the Month too. #utedchat
Q4 If you had to choose between compliant, engaged, or empowered, which would you want to define your students? Why? How do you show students you appreciate them in your classroom? #UTedchat
I played speed on Tuesday with a group of sixth graders. I made it to the final three before getting knocked out. Did that build our trust? Doesn’t matter. I had fun and so did they. #UTedChat
A4: I don't believe you can empower students. They have power. We need to work to make sure that our teaching and systems don't get in the way. #utedchat
A4 Empowered because that means they know they can learn/do for themselves. They are capable. I think giving my students choices in the classroom let them know I appreciate them. #utedchat
It is tough when your class is tough. Remember why you got into teaching. What keeps you going? Isn't it the idea that maybe a difference will be made with at least one? #UTedChat
I challenge my interns to make two positive forms of communication home within the first two months of school - at admin end we try to do the same - make positive calls home early and often #UTedchat
I would say YES it helped to build trust with those students. It also showed them you are more than a Vice Principal, you’re an actual person. Kids don’t always make that connection. #UTedChat
Totally agree! These conversations are important for all students. And brain research tells us that they are absolutely essential for children of poverty--build vocabulary while communicating they they matter. #utedchat
A3: @jimknight99 talks about Bids that are extended. Responses can be turn towards, turn against and turn away. The most damaging response is to turn away. It helped me understand that even bad behavior is a bid to be noticed, so carefully turning towards is critical #UTedchat
A4 My Ss are engaged. Our classroom is an active hub where collaboration and learning are key. I'd love to get them to empowered... it's a work in progress. I show I appreciate my Ss by thanking them for being there and taking time to find out what's important to them. #utedchat
Q5 Are engaging students and empowering students fundamentally different and yet equally important? Does one naturally precede the other? Can you be empowered without being engaged? Is engaging learners a short term goal and empowering students a long term goal? #UTedchat
Teachers HAVE to realize they teach students first and foremost or else they won’t make the lifetime difference they could be making. Subjects are important but 2nd to students! #UTedChat
#utedchat
A4 Students need to be empowered to prepare them for their future roles. Compliant and Engaged is good for classroom work but empowered helps them become the best they can be. I show students I appreciate them, by thanking them and complimenting them.#utedchat
Do I have to choose just one? ;) I think they all go hand in hand and we are responsible for creating a classroom environment that is conducive to all 3. For me, it starts with the rules, then they learn they are empowered by their choices which makes them more engaged. #utedchat
Because contrary to popular belief (and what the parking lot sometimes says) teachers don’t actually live in their classrooms. We do have lives outside of school. #UTedChat
A5: Engagement doesn't always mean learning and certainly not always empowerment. I could show a baby monkey riding on a pig and they would be engaged, but what would it accomplish other than pure joy for a minute? #utedchat
A3: Get to know each student. Notice them. Ask them questions. Give them choice. Give them a purpose. Do exciting things that they will enjoy and teach them to love learning as much as you do! #UTedChat
A4: Sounds like you have studied the work from @SchlechtyCenter: different levels of student engagement. I want students who are truly engaged because they have been empowered to own their learning. #utedchat
Q4 If you had to choose between compliant, engaged, or empowered, which would you want to define your students? Why? How do you show students you appreciate them in your classroom? #UTedchat
A4 Empowered students are the result of student-driven instruction, where the teacher creates learning opportunities that are open-ended and engage students in high-level thinking tasks. #utedchat
A4: also how often did “because I said so!” work for you as a child? The same for our students. Esp. if we don’t have a relationship w/ them, if there is no trust, then they definitely won’t go along with us on anything. #utedchat
Agree 100% - at the end of the day we all wan to be affirmed, appreciated, validated, and understand - last year we did a surprise VIP day for each teacher, got favorite treats, invited family - it was a great way to build relationships #UTedchat
#Utedchat A4/5: I desire Empowered because individuals who are empowered find ways to be engaged in their learning. Also a hard question to answer because engaged has many different connotations. How do you define engaged? @FarrBfarr
A5 Empower imo means to give Ss the skills and confidence to succeed. Engage would be to be fully invested in learning. You can have both and yes as the teacher you can cultivate engagement and spread empowerment #utedchat
A4b: As an AP I do my best to greet students every morning, especially those who are late; write emails home when I see students do kind things for each other, look at kids in the eye when we speak, & listen with my heart. Not perfect but this is my start. #UTedChat
I always wanted to be the teacher who called parents in the middle of class for some positive news to brag on their students but never did. A lost opportunity to really inspire greatness & positivity in the classroom. #UTedChat
A3: Sending home positive notes and emails also leaves a positive impact on both parents and students. When you think about, most communication with parents is based around negative things. Throwing out a few positives is really powerful. #UTedchat
That is really powerful. I taught in a small district and small town atmosphere and anytime I made a point to go to a student's dance recital, or whatever, it was a BIG deal that their teacher was there. #utedchat
A5: I talk to my Ss about being empowered when I teach. How they are the ones driving that train. They can only be as good as the work they put in. I don't want to teach my Ss the answers, but instead show them how to seek them out themselves. That's empowering #utedchat
A1 #utedchat honesty, vulnerability, and a positive attitude. When students see we are still learning from our mistakes they are more willing to be brave and dare to be better than they ever dreamed to be!
I just think about how amazing that would be as a parent to get a phone call like that. My son's teacher would often send me texts with pictures of his work and it always made me SO happy! She'd let my son watch her as she texted so he knew she was doing it. #UTedChat
They are very different and conditional. They are symbiotic and help the other to grow. Empowerment over their education is the ultimate goal. They can engage on their own. A5 #utedchat
Q5 Are engaging students and empowering students fundamentally different and yet equally important? Does one naturally precede the other? Can you be empowered without being engaged? Is engaging learners a short term goal and empowering students a long term goal? #UTedchat
A4 Engaged AND empowered! We have to realize teachers are here to assist students in their learning. The sooner we allow #StuVoice and #StuChoice the to be the guiding force in our classrooms the better off we’ll be. Let them lead their learning. #UTedChat
Q4 If you had to choose between compliant, engaged, or empowered, which would you want to define your students? Why? How do you show students you appreciate them in your classroom? #UTedchat
It is. I remember a student inviting me to her dance recital--a recital offered in partnership with the Boys and Girls club. When she saw me afterwards, she exclaimed "You came!" Not sure many people in her life show up when they say they will. :( #utedchat
When I go back to teaching I will definitely find ways to do this more because it is huge, not just with building a relationship with our students, but with having support from parents as well, and they want to hear the good. #utedchat
A5: Engaged is an action. Empowered is a mindset and it affects much more than the hours spent in the classroom. I believe students that are engaged leads to students who are empowered. #utedchat
A5 Tough questions! Empowering students is different than engagement. Empowering means giving them the power over their learning, putting them in control. Engagement is momentary and not always about learning.. #UTedChat
Q6 Pat Summit stated, “I won 1,098 games, 8 national championships, coached in four different decades. But what I see are not the numbers. I see their faces.” Share a success story you’ve had in noticing a student, building trust, and making a positive impact. #UTedchat
A5: Engaged is an action. Empowered is a mindset and it affects much more than the hours spent in the classroom. I believe students that are engaged leads to students who are empowered. #utedchat
A5: yes...engaged and empowered are different. idk if they automatically lead from one to the other. but I like the idea of one being short term and the other long term. #UTedChat
A5 engagement can be a part of empowerment, but I don’t think one need flow to the other. Empowerment is predicated upon purpose-driven instruction. #utedchat
A5: I think students that feel empowered are naturally engaged. The engagement comes first and then leads to a feeling and sense of empowerment. #Utedchat
A4: If my students feel empowered, then to me, they are stronger, more confident, and feel as if they are owners of their own learning. I'll take it! #UTedChat
Gotta give them the space and opportunity to unleash their power. Sometimes you need to help them to see their power. That's what empowered means to me. I think you are spot on in making sure we don't slow them down. #UTedChat
Q4: You know my answer to that @FarrBfarr. Empowered! I know my kids are learning. They want to learn. They interact. Solve problems. They already have the power. Just need to help them unleash it! #UTedChat
A5: Absolutely depends on how you define engagement. Busy does not mean engaged. True engagement is empowerment because the student is choosing to learn. We must see students as volunteers in our classroom. They may be required to be there but they choose to learn. #utedchat
Q5 Are engaging students and empowering students fundamentally different and yet equally important? Does one naturally precede the other? Can you be empowered without being engaged? Is engaging learners a short term goal and empowering students a long term goal? #UTedchat
I know, sometimes even in classrooms where the students are leading their own learning a teacher has to take back the choice and compete requires items not always a first choice for students. It’s in those moments where engagement is needed most. #UTedChat
And it’s not chaos or a nightmare ... it’s more like “hey, I’m the teacher, if I don’t jump on the bandwagon these Ss are going to leave me behind!” #utedchat
A6 Where I feel I make a lot of difference is in advising student clubs. I've been the adviser for two different clubs and it has given me a chance to get to know students better. Spending time with them outside of regular school hours means a lot to most kids. #utedchat
A6: Just today a student messaged me (in CANVAS) asking for advice on how to get caught up. She's missed a bunch due to illness, surgery etc. The heart breaking part was her comment that she feels like I'm the only teacher who cares. We'll work through it tomorrow. #utedchat
Q6 Pat Summit stated, “I won 1,098 games, 8 national championships, coached in four different decades. But what I see are not the numbers. I see their faces.” Share a success story you’ve had in noticing a student, building trust, and making a positive impact. #UTedchat
A6: I always greet my Ss at the door with a fist bump. I was running late one day, and as I rushed in and started class, a student walked up to me, fist extended, and said, “I can t start class w/out my Mr. Robs’ fist bump.” It made my day!
#UTedchat#littlethingsmatter
A5 Yes engaging and empowering are different but both important for a classroom to run effectively and efficiently. As much as we want to give students the control 100% of the time, that isn’t always possible. In those moments engagement is crucial. #UTedChat.
Q5 Are engaging students and empowering students fundamentally different and yet equally important? Does one naturally precede the other? Can you be empowered without being engaged? Is engaging learners a short term goal and empowering students a long term goal?
Thank you for reminding me.Yesterday, a boy refused to make corrections. He cried, ripped paper and threw 2 chairs in front of me. Same things happen almost everyday. I don't know how much longer I can tolerate him. I hope I can be more professional, less emotional. #utedchat
Exactly! Don’t be left behind because you don’t recognize the need to allow students to lead out on THEIR learning. Organized chaos is actually quite nice. #UTedChat
A6 I spent a lot of time working with one of the toughest 9th grade students I ever had, he bragged about getting 2 Ts to quit (kinda true) Took a lot of effort to build rel of trust, he went from 0.0 GPA to 3.0. In HS he wrote about how it got him back on track #utedchat
A6 I have a student from 3 years ago who always remembers to share her writing assignments with me. I love that she knows I care! (And I do!) #UTedChat
A6: I feel like I got to know my students best when I coached for @GOTRI - spending extra time out of class with my students and training for a 5k was an awesome experience. #utedchat
#utedchat 15 years ago I invited a soph boy in a credit recovery class to come and put his acrobatic/parkour abilities to use on the cheer team. We contracted to get his grades up so he was eligible. 2 years later he wrote that the invite to be involved saved his life.
Q7@SteeleThoughts"We asked all our students to write down the name of an adult in the school that they trusted... an adult they could talk to if they needed someone. 38 kids did not have one."
CTA-Starting tomorrow, how will you build trust with a student who needs it?#UTedchat
When I taught I use to give my Kindergarten students an elbow bump each day before they went home. It was a small action, but my students loved it and to be honest so did I. That little interaction spoke a hundred words. #UTedchat
I've had several students in that situation. Breaks my heart. If they're willing to work, I'm willing to work with them. #utedchat It always makes my heart happy when they come back.
A6: Last fall I visited @AWhimpey at @GeorgeMasonU. We ate Thai food and talked and laughed. She was my newspaper editor several years ago. SHE continues to impact MY life. #UTedChat
A6: a student once told his mom @Simons2Simons that he knew I liked him because I was trying not to laugh when having to discipline him! He liked to dance on the tables when i stepped out of the room 🕺🏽🤣 love that crazy kid! #UTedChat
A6: I am so grateful for teachers in my building that create a safe place for our students to learn & excel. Our graduation rate/cohort is one set of numbers we monitor but behind each number is a students life/family that will be impacted for generations! #UTedChat
A6 Teaching in a small school allows me to know my students before and after they leave my class. I love it when students tell me they learned to love reading or writing or were less afraid of math because of being in my class. #utedchat
A6 Pat didn’t just see their faces she saw into their souls and then dug deeper into them than they thought possible, then she laid out their future and showed those Lady Vols how they were going to face their challenges and succeed #UTedChat
#UTedChat A3: get to the point that you can ask follow up questions at a later date. Initial conversations are great, but students feel listened to when you remember details. Feeling listened to builds trust. By no means am I perfect at this, but it is a conscious effort.
A6 Having a parent tell me their child thought I talked too much and having the humility to recognize they were right and make a change. It sucks being called out, but sometimes the truth hurts. Change is hard but can be well worth it! #UTedChat
Q6 Pat Summit stated, “I won 1,098 games, 8 national championships, coached in four different decades. But what I see are not the numbers. I see their faces.” Share a success story you’ve had in noticing a student, building trust, and making a positive impact. #UTedchat
A7: Tomorrow, I will work harder for that one student who wants to "drop out of Jr. High." Maybe if he feels cared about, he will want to be here more. #utedchat
A6: I got a Facebook message out of the blue a couple of weeks ago from a former student. She just wanted to tell me that she loved me and that she will always remember the influence I had on her life. Best. Day. Ever. #utedchat

A7: I've been meaning to share that idea with my principal so we can do the same exercise. I'll follow through on that tomorrow. #utedchat I'll also work with my students who are panicking because the term ends in 2 weeks. Those who want to work can still succeed.
Q7@SteeleThoughts"We asked all our students to write down the name of an adult in the school that they trusted... an adult they could talk to if they needed someone. 38 kids did not have one."
CTA-Starting tomorrow, how will you build trust with a student who needs it?#UTedchat
