Time for #DevDiscuss, an hour-long Twitter chat on a dev topic. Tonight's topic is:
👉 Diet/health/exercise 🥑💪🎾
Let's start with some questions:
What are you doing for your health right now?
What is working?
What is not?
What are your health goals?
I work out every morning before work. Typically it is going for a run one day, lift weights the next, do core work after that, and then repeat. #DevDiscuss
Working out every morning is kinda like meditation for me. It sets me up for the rest of my day and gets my jitteryness out. That said, there are mornings where I wake up and I am really dreading doing it, but I do it anyways. #DevDiscuss
I run five days a week and I'm starting to incorporate lifting in my routine.
Also, attempting to cut back on the oh-so-ubiquitous dev team happy hours. #DevDiscuss

Right now I try take strolls during breaks at work but really focusing on getting myself in the gym at least 6 days a week for about an hour. I follow the PPL program as my workout routine. It was rough initially but finding a group to do it with helped. #devdiscuss
I'm "good" at exercise, sometimes bad at routine.
Meaning I know my way around a gym but I sometimes let life get in the way.
But I'm getting very routine-based in this regard and it's helping my mind and body a lot.

What works for me is using MyFitnessPal and doing workout DVDs. I often schedule my workouts and make sure I do them regularly. I don't have any healthy goals. My main goal is just to workout 30 minutes a day. What isn't working is my fitness tracker #devdiscuss
- Exercise! I run and train for races. I've been using the Keep workout app to strength train at home.
- Cook more! Most of my cooked meals are plant-based and healthy.
- Meditate to help my anxiety.
- Prioritizing sleep -- has helped so much!
#DevDiscuss
Here's some small things I've done since starting my full time dev job:
1. Standing desk. 10/10
2. Try and pack my own lunches following recipes from https://t.co/UM9fh1hQAL
3. Get a @fitbit ✨
Doing: 1.5 hours weight training 3-4 times per week. Salsa dancing several nights per week.
Working: Muscles getting big
Not working: Poor nutrition, interrupted sleep. Exercise isn’t elevating mood.
Next: Transition to more well-rounded program

Meditation is so helpful! I started loosing track of doing it on the daily. When I give myself 10 minutes a day I find the day alot more relaxing. #devdiscuss

Good: Some Pilates in the morning or going to the gym after work. Salads are good too.
Could do better: packing my lunch and drinking wine or jack and ginger. #devdiscuss
My physical health… not nearly enough. To the point it is nearly shameful.
My mental health… that is my focus at the moment. My goal at this point is to overcome my anxiety and fears that have loomed over me for so many years. #DevDiscuss

What works for me is getting up a few hours early, making it as easy for myself to do the healthy stuff. Companies dropping off goodies at the office nonstop is making it tooough 😅#DevDiscuss
Started jogging 6 years ago because I needed to release stress. Now I’m a 2-times marathoner and lost 15 kilos. You have to get away from the computer #DevDiscuss
I stopped using food to make me feel better after bad days. Less drinking, more home made meals. Also, walking my dog when finishing my day. I’ve lost ~30lbs and the cholesterol is down 40pts. 🤘

Work has a healthy-eating labeling system:
💚 Green text = Clean! Good for you! Yay!
🧡 Orange = Ehhh it's not *that* bad.
❤ Red = Treat yo self
#DevDiscuss
For the past 2 years I’ve been hitting the gym 4-5 days per week, doing cardio & weights. I’ve also been using @WeightWatchers to help with my healthy eating habits.
Thanks to this I’ve lost 70+ lbs, feel better mentally, emotionally, & physically. #DevDiscuss

I run a lot. Trying to hit 1000 miles this year. I also hit the gym 3 days a week and do Crossfit. Getting away from the computer is of the utmost importance for health. #DevDiscuss
Eating healthy foods is way easier when you cook for yourself I’ve noticed. Realizing how much straight *sugar* was in some of the things I enjoyed put my head on straight. #DevDiscuss

Goal: To minimize time hunched over a computer at work. What’s helped? Standing desk at work, walk breaks, doing pull-ups at the office gym. What’s suffering? Mental health. Trying to resolve with honest conversations with friends and therapy. #DevDiscuss
I also meal prep. It makes my day to day eating so much easier as I don’t have to think about it. Sunday’s are meal prep days and yes, I plan the entire week of meals at a time. When you work all day you don’t want to think about food at the end of the day. #DevDiscuss
Also the one thing that I noticed helped me is doing these things for myself, for my own feeling of wellbeing, and being generous about mistakes and getting off track. People talk about getting to that point but it’s really something else when it hits you. #DevDiscuss
Also, if you have the ways/means to find a mental health professional, please find one. For your sake and everyone around you. I see one and she helps me out a lot. #devdiscuss
I like that it’s “treat yoself” and not “junk food” 😃. Feel like it’s easy to form an attitude of self-denial when you are trying to make a life change, and that’s not good. #DevDiscuss

- Drink a lot of water.
- Take break every half an hour (depends on you)
- Take a walk every 2 hour
- Grab lunch in time.
Goal: To stay sharp between your eyes during work hours and fit for the day fit for the night to think well.

Last year I started cycling, finishing the year with long race. This year I want to be better than marginally prepared, and finish in only 6 hours #devdiscuss

Also, one thing I noticed since I started working out regularly: getting into the office knowing that you already got something done is a * game changer * #DevDiscuss
I work out twice a day: GSP Rushfit on the morning and DDP Yoga on the evening.
I also stopped eating junk food and now I prepare all my meals.
It helps me a lot. I want to start running on a daily basis but it's really hard to find the time with all the work :(
#DevDiscuss
Goals:
- Running: trying to get back into it after losing enthusiasm/injury
- Getting stronger: I am very bad at sticking to a lifting schedule
- Using my standing desk 😳
- Walking/getting outside during the work day
What's working:
- My stash of desk snacks
#devdiscuss
Lots of running. Saw pictures of a coworker who retired after 40 years, about 250lbs heavier than when he started his career. That's good motivation. Some of my reports will run with me, so it's a good chance to do some coaching as well #DevDiscuss
#devdiscuss
I cycle to work. Have done since over 2 years now. It's a short ride of 15 minutes one way. But includes cycling up the ramp. 😁 Some days, I do morning walk in the apartments campus. And yes, start my day with fistful of dry fruits!
My primary goal for getting fit is so I can be more active with my daughter. After joining gyms and failing to exercise on my own several times, I finally joined a ‘class’. Taking the decision out of it was the key for me. #DevDiscuss
My diet has gotten exponentially better since my wife and I started meal planning every Sunday. We also started doing @Imperfectfruit each week which has been a huge help.#DevDiscuss
I like this advice a lot. I do the water, taking a break, and lunch thing, but did not think of the taking a walk part. I'm sure that helps a lot.
But I do play golf at least once a week (and I walk when I do it).
#DevDiscuss
Trying to be aware of what I eat, and work out more.
Fitbit is really helpful. I don't have a food/calorie plan, but instead track what I eat + macros. Using Fitbit Coach to workout at home.
Goals: self-esteem, and being able to walk up stairs w/o feeling tired #devdiscuss

For any devs looking to try a weight lifting program, I really like 5x5 personally. It's simple (you do the 5 major lifts) and it's tough if you've never lifted weights before. I've found lifting weights totally clears my head... almost feels like meditation.
#DevDiscuss
Oh! Under appreciated: well-timed sunlight is supposed to do wonders for your sleep schedule, and anecdotally I think it’s helped. It turns out being outside when the sun is out is good! #DevDiscuss
Counting calories alone with Fitbit's food plan doesn't help me. The medium plan wanted me to eat 1200 calories, which is not healthy for me. Let alone being hard to do! I try for 1350-1500, but care more about WHAT I'm eating, and how much protein/fat/carbs #DevDiscuss
I'm doing pretty well, I limit my sugar and refined carbs, I work out 3-5 times a week with strength training, and I've started walking 5 miles a day on weekdays (to and from work -- great time to catch up on podcasts). #DevDiscuss
Standing desk and getting my butt kicked by Peloton Instructors for 45 minutes per day. And, so far, I'm significantly better for it... especially that damn bike ride. #DevDiscuss
Found a job that is more what I wanted to do in my career. Five years down the road and several episodes of burnout later...but I got there. 🙌🏾 #DevDiscuss
Impressed by everyone's exercise routines and healthy habits! After my maternity leave, I've been just trying to keep up. Thank you #DevDiscuss for reminding me that I need to make my health a priority.
I'll start w/ a simple goal: Go for a walk w/ my baby girl every other day
Just got started with my first personal react.js project last night! If anyone has some favorite react libraries / frameworks to share, I'd love to hear them 😊 Currently using bootstrap, webpack, etc. #DevDiscuss

- Weightlifting and cardio 4-5 days/wk - what’s working: packing a lunch and then eating while I work and going to the gym over lunch. Huge impact on how I feel. - what’s not: hard to maintain a good diet especially over weekends - Goals: consistency #DevDiscuss
