Good morning, #HackLearning and happy Mother's Day!
I'm Lee, a district coordinator of instructional technology, from NY.
Excited to learn with you all this morning!
1st-draft story for today's #hacklearning... Once upon a time, there was a teacher named Brian who worked with middle-school students in Colorado. We didn't always live happily ever after, but that doesn't mean we stopped trying.
A1: stories matter in school because they provide context, meaning, and empathy. Understanding people’s struggles, victories, and perspectives through story is the best way to create empathy, which will create better citizens in a divided world #HackLearning
A1 Storytelling is the most accessible form of learning. You can write it, type it, voice it. It is the most engaging way to share learning and requires no tech, or can use tech. #HackLearning
A1 Telling our stories creates community. We’re not alone in our learning, our work, our experiences of injustice, or our willingness to stand against it. #HackLearning
Jeremy, parent in Connecticut here.
A1) Stories matter because we—the audience for those stories—matter. We can’t help promote your stories if we don’t know them. #HackLearning
A1: Stories matter because nobody sees your school the way you do. It helps others to get a glimpse of the passion, care, and effort to do our best in our schools. #HackLearning
A1 Stories matter because it's part of our human nature to listen, remember, and share stories. Our brains use stories to build connections to all of our learning. #HackLearning
A1 I believe our heritage is passed down in the form of storytelling ... it may be a lost art, yet we all seem to love stories .. at all ages! #HackLearning
A1 It’s how we convey thoughts, feelings, and questions. It’s how we share history, question history, and ponder the future. Stories bridge experiences and understanding. Existence is built on interpretations of stories. #HackLearning
A1: Stories matter because they connect people... and the #1 job of an educator is to make connections with her/his students. Without connections, there’s minumal learning. #HackLearning
A1: Schools forever have relied on deputizing kids to carry on the story of the day. We need to move beyond the “What did you do at school today?” conversation & proactively share the amazing happening in our schools with families & the community. #HackLearning
A1 Stories are important to tell because they hold are thoughts, heartbeats, and deep-seated feelings. They share what is the best of what we want or need to say. Blogs are contemporary storytelling caches. #HackLearning#SundayThoughts on #MothersDay: https://t.co/7rGryoRimf
A1. Stories help us bear witness to lives within and beyond our own, but what's more important is how we listen and read. The experience can build callousness or sensitivity and responsiveness. #hacklearning
A1: Stories matter because they are what we are. They are ways to learn about people and ideas and everything through the conduit of ourselves. They are a mirror to the possibilities of ourselves and the world around us. With stories, we see ourselves more clearly. #HackLearning
A1: If we are not telling our stories, someone else will tell them for us. And, more often than not those stories aren’t accurate.
We have the power to share our amazing, every day. #HackLearning

A1 For me stories can drive personal change. We find meaning in the stories, make personal connections and can take actions based on what we learned from the stories. It is how we can choose to repeat history or make certain we don't repeat history. #hacklearning

Some of the best stories are in comics, right Creed? Remember this one?
5 Reasons Your Students Should Be Reading Comic Books https://t.co/7bc69FAL7E#HackLearning
A1: Our “stories” are the roadmaps of our lives. The more we know about someone’s journey the more we understand where they are coming from! #hacklearning
A1 Stories matter because they’re memorable. They tap into the emotions of listeners and allows them to make a connection. Adding a pic of my latest fav bedtime story 4 my daughter! #hacklearning
A1 stories activate and become part of the emotional memory system .. my grandmother wore lavender perfume and I remember the scent of her holding me before she died when I was just five. #hacklearning
A1: Our “stories” are the roadmaps of our lives. The more we know about someone’s journey the more we understand where they are coming from! #hacklearning
A2: A problem to solve, the iterations and challenges, then the result that made a difference. But education stories don't end. They start the pattern again. #Hacklearning
A1.2 Two more reasons stories matter, according to @pacylin: They can be mirrors reflecting our own identities or windows peeking into new perspectives. https://t.co/EdgxSvENLK#hacklearning
Interesting how long parents (and schools) have relied on kids to tell the school’s story! Students should be part of the storytelling... but who should shape it? #HackLearning
A1: Schools forever have relied on deputizing kids to carry on the story of the day. We need to move beyond the “What did you do at school today?” conversation & proactively share the amazing happening in our schools with families & the community. #HackLearning
A1: stories matter. They provide context for human connection. But they must be built on TRUTH. We must always have honesty- even when it’s uncomfortable. Celebrate stories, embrace tradition, and honestly assess reality.

A2 Your School's Story - it's a true story & shares your values, beliefs & celebrations about learning and reflects what your school is all about https://t.co/HDYXJj8RvF#HackLearning
A2 A great story within the context of education implies the understanding that what works here may not always work there. It's not a lecture. It inspires other educators to try new things or feel good about what they do. #hacklearning
A2: A great story in the context of education is one where passion is evident. We have to spread the good word about the positive things happening in our schools every single day. #HackLearning
A2 my bar stories are ones that are about my life ... my students want to know me just as I want to know them ... text-to-self connections are valuable, motivating learning moments #HackLearning
A2: great story telling in edu has to have 1.a hook 2. story arc 3.deeper meaning https://t.co/blxMZFrTfk application with 5: emotion (humor, sadness, etc.) #HackLearning
A2 - Stories link us and communities together. We can change the narrative in education the more we promote the awesome work that is taking place on a consistent basis https://t.co/VEIKWtxQBa#HackLearning
Timing of when a story is told can also be important. Share along the way so misconceptions and negative assumptions don't brew before you get to your end. #HackLearning
What group of teachers inspires you with their story telling the most? The social studies department at my high school does a wonderful job. #HackLearning
A1 One that hooks, engages with a level of excitement & intrigue, and told by a passionate educator who leaves her students on the edge of their seats begging for more! #HackLearning
#hacklearning a2. When the story is 1st person and context specific, there is an intimacy with the listener /reader of witnessing, empathy. When 3rd and distant, the tone can be didactic.
A2 One that hooks, engages with a level of excitement & intrigue, and told by a passionate educator who leaves her students on the edge of their seats begging for more! #HackLearning
A2) A great story draws people in. They identify with it. The story creates a common bond. This is critical in our schools-to connect w/ community and tell a story about the power of education TOGETHER. #HackLearning
Exactly! More stories need to be built around how students are engaged in powerful learning, which is many cases can’t be quantified with a number #hacklearning
Again, it goes back to connection for me. When students tell me their story (or any story), there’s a connection. From that connection develops a positive, trusting relationship. #HackLearning
If you fail in an effort - your story remains for how you tried and what can be learned from mistakes or choices that didn't pan out. Be comfortable sharing and don't forget to RE-read! #HackLearning
A2. A story is good when it captures the interest of those listening. It is inviting, intriguing, captivating, and comes alive for the audience. #hacklearning
A2 my bar stories are ones that are about my life ... my students want to know me just as I want to know them ... text-to-self connections are valuable, motivating learning moments #HackLearning
A2 Telling the story creates a "brand" in a way that sticks in the memories of others. Nobody remembers the "data," however people do remember stories. The more positive stories that "stick" in education, the more support and understanding "we" have.#hacklearning
A2 Great stories go well beyond achievement and focus on innovative practices, learner success, teacher/admin quality, partnerships, etc. #hacklearning
If we "the school" don't tell our story then who will, and will it be the story we want portrayed as who we are? We have to be willing to tell our story to support our students, families and community. #hacklearning
A1: Stories usually tell a journey or process. And if the listener is actively engaged, they’ll also experience the emotion of the storyteller at that moment in time. #HackLearning#gwinchat
I brought the teen librarian in one day, and he signed up all kids for library cards. Then, we started a summer book club. Sometimes we have to show them the way.
#HackLearning
A2: What constitutes a great story in the context of Education = A real issue with examples of the struggles and hard work leading to success. Nothing comes easy, effort is importance and people need to know everyone struggles when working toward success.
#Hacklearning
#hacklearning a2. I like to start of a and articles with a story, including dialogue, to show the interactions and discoveries unfolding. How Ss speak and move in the classroom can reveal the culture of learning. https://t.co/Xq6nkwlqbB
A2) A story in which the student is at the center, and includes all who have a role in shaping that story, from inside and outside the school. #HackLearning
A2: great stories inspire, build culture and set tone for the classroom/school. Great stories are lived and shared openly by the school community - allowing students and adults to contribute to the plot. Where story ends, the school’s Vision takes over.
#HackLearning
A2 I think storytelling can really engage a missing element of classrooms #studentvoice We need to engage this as a practice instead of traditional lecture. Make Ss the knowledge and share through storytelling #HackLearning
A1 a great ed story creates dissonance, raises questions, doesn’t let one off the hook easily, pushes exploration, discovery, and change in neural networks #HackLearning
The story doesn’t need to be great, as much as it needs to be authentic. Continually creating and adding value to the community it serves. #hacklearning
A2: To me a great story can capture the attention of an audience. Listeners identify with the characters and content & understand the significance of its message. A great story’s impact is felt for years! #hacklearning
A1) Stories provide hope, empathy, share our success/failures, share rituals and cultures, and most importantly connect with one another. #hacklearning
A2 a great story strengthens connections & has the potential to answer questions/produce solutions. Not the opposite, too often stories have no purpose to educate and are divisive #HackLearning
A2 Telling the story creates a "brand" in a way that sticks in the memories of others. Nobody remembers the "data," however people do remember stories. The more positive stories that "stick" in education, the more support and understanding "we" have.#hacklearning
A1. Stories impact how I see my school setting. As I hear the stories of many of our students, I worry less about the small things and can focus on what matters most: belongingness, well-being, and love #hacklearning
A2 I learned 3 methods in telling our school's story- 1. find something to brag about (& there is plenty) 2. Tell everyone & 3. Tell everyone. The days of the 1month newsletter home are over. As school leaders we should b telling our story every day! #HackLearning
A2- Storytelling is so important for providing alternative perspectives. Textbooks tell one story. So many other opportunities to share other views through story #HackLearning
#hacklearning a2. Students are interviewing their families this weekend and sharing them on our school blog so we can hear about the lives within and beyond our school walls.
#hacklearning a2. I like to start of a and articles with a story, including dialogue, to show the interactions and discoveries unfolding. How Ss speak and move in the classroom can reveal the culture of learning. https://t.co/Xq6nkwlqbB

A2a: Again, to me, a great story is full of emotion and vulnerability on the part of the storyteller. In education, a great story would never end! #HackLearning#gwinchat
I love that idea. As I continue to work to tell our school story I will also work to get student voice into the story telling. School is their "home" they should be proud and want to tell the stories too. #hacklearning
A3 Teach students and parents to be self advocates and share successes and backgrounds. We have to create and foster a culture where all feel included and valued. THAT’S when people share stories! #HackLearning
A2 A story that shows how productive struggle + GRIT can end in progress towards goals and success.... edu is not always pretty but the work is so worth the struggle! #HackLearning#champforkids
Happy to be up on a quiet Mother’s Day - on July 31, 1987 who would have thought I would be Skyping with my kid today who works in digital media in NYC? My computer in 1987 was a dual disc drive PC running on dos with 540 K of ram there’s a story! #hacklearning
A2) Good Stories often include a #Goal an #complication and the climatic ending that speaks to what was learned as the person tries to overcome the #conflict. #hacklearning
A2: What constitutes a great story in the context of Education = A real issue with examples of the struggles and hard work leading to success. Nothing comes easy, effort is importance and people need to know everyone struggles when working toward success.
#Hacklearning
A3 Using social media to share stories seems a little on the nose, but I'd say it's the best way to get the word out about great stories in schools and in classrooms.
#hacklearning
Don't be afraid of social media in schools. Trust me- they're talking about school there already, you might as well get the real story out there. #HackLearning
A3: Publishing these stories in some way shape or form. An ePub that parents and/or other schools can download and read such as - HS students writing for elementary Ss. #HackLearning
A3 Stories are much more meaningful when they are shared with an authentic audience! We must provide that for our Ss. So many apps, & sites to allow for a broad audience outside the classroom walls. #HackLearning
A2b: It would continue through all types of adventures even cycling back through previous stories once in a while hoping for improvement. We would see changes and growth as the story continued to evolve #HackLearning#gwinchat
A3: You create something bigger than the school or that can’t be contained within the walls. Something people want to be apart of ! #bradleynation#Hacklearning
Q3: Produce. Find a story you and your students want to tell, take pride in, are passionate about, and build on it. Fill your school with it, however you can. It will overflow into your community and beyond. Utilize all tools at your disposal. Create! Make! Tell! #hacklearning
Q2 the best stories I’ve ever heard about schools and school districts starts with the anecdotal...data is great evidence in a report, but it doesn’t give people the true visual to connect with the essence of a building #HackLearning
#HackLearning Wait till the very last moment and then decide you are are probably screwed because you can't learn the entire semester 5 hours before the exam. #College
A3 It is actually quite simple...tell them. We aren’t as good as we think we are in telling about how Education is changing. Our voices must be louder! #Hacklearning
A3 Amplifying stories to reach within and beyond the walls of school(s) can be accomplished by assuring the story has a connection to those in and outside school(s). Share through social media and allow those most impacted by it to spread the positive message.
#hacklearning
A3 Publishing and sharing Ss work, writing my own blog to share my story of successes, failures, and reflections... sharing and engaging on Twitter https://t.co/F4bbs4f4zm#champforkids#HackLearning
Wow! I was sharing at #EdCampWOrlando that I love revisiting my #sketchnotes yet I toss my written notes without a 3rd glance - my pictures help me remember the conversation & community #HackLearning
A3: I’m sitting at an airport after being w/ the @TeachersGuild Fellows this weekend and we discussed this very thing. The story begins w/ us. We have to use all mediums to share. #HackLearning
A3: social media is the current campfire around which stories are shared. Schools not actively building an online presence are missing this age-old opportunity to build community and common goals. #HackLearning
A3 Digital literacies can move storytelling beyond the walls of a school. District websites w/ embedded twitter feeds, teacher blogs, podcasts #Hacklearning
A3 I amplify stories with social media. IG, FB, a blog and Twitter. Each channel covers a slightly different angle of rebuilding the schools shop/STEAM space and shop program. donors choose is a huge platform for our story, allowing others to become characters in it #hacklearning
Started a hashtag with my totally awesome teachers to reflect on all we've learned about math this year. It was amazing! So cool to see how many other teachers from around the country joined us. It was very powerful! #hacklearning
A2c: Education needs to remember its story will be comprised of individual stories and stop trying to one-size-fits-all the process. #gwinchat#HackLearning
Our Bio Ss turned in a trailer for a horror movie - focused on dissecting a pig. It wasn't assigned or anything, they just did it together and shared it with the teacher. They want to create - Please let them! #HackLearning
A3: I love using @Flipgrid and @Skype as platforms for students to share & connect stories with the world. Likewise, blogging & Ed Camps have become a favorite best practice for me to learn from the stories of other educators & return with ideas for the classroom. #HackLearning
A2) Good Stories often include a #Goal an #complication and the climatic ending that speaks to what was learned as the person tries to overcome the #conflict. #hacklearning
We are lucky to live in an age where our students’ stories can be amplified worldwide! 🌎 Some of my favorite ways to share student stories: @Flipgrid@padlet@WeVideo@YouTube@Blogger... and various website builders (@Wix is my personal fave) #HackLearning
A3: Share stories via Twitter, schoolwide emails, newsletters, blogging, conversations. We need to tell our story from the inside out! Share the wonderful teaching and learning taking place!#hacklearning
A2) I think a good story is helps the reader become part of the journey.
The story is enhanced if the reader relates and then is called to action. #hacklearning
This #MothersDay, you can send a pregnant refugee mother a critical newborn baby kit in honor of your mom. Order from @theIRC and Airbnb will match your gift! https://t.co/xtmacwzB1P
A3: We are really working on this now, we haven't been telling our story very well. Working with our local community to help, lots of pictures, social media. It is happening, and we are doing better. Love the ideas here. #hacklearning
#hacklearning A3 so many ways to get your story out - but it needs to be a focused effort, not haphazard - wish all buildings hired one person dedicated to this and this alone
Q3: recording and sharing stories online is one way to push out our stories. Google Hangouts or Skype in the Classroom are vital as well. Last year a 9th grade history class in my school in NY had regular Hangouts with ELLs in Morocco. #globalcitizens#HackLearning
My kid in digital media/social media design and marketing- a creative director- says short video is all it in terms of selling stories that sell ideas, products, a lifestyle - apps change, stories endure #hacklearning
A3 Teach students and parents to be self advocates and share successes and backgrounds. We have to create and foster a culture where all feel included and valued. THAT’S when people share stories! #HackLearning

A3: Another important piece of amplifying a success story beyond the school walls is to present at education workshops and conferences. Share your, your teams', your teachers', your students' success with others. You never know who you may motivate.
#hacklearning
A3 I have been trying some new ideas this year, my students did the Great Thanksgiving Listen to tell an elders story and they are interviewing immigrants this year. Some will use StoryCorps and YouTube to share stories #hacklearning
A3: People don't buy what you do, they buy why you do it.
Amplify your stories beyond the walls of your school by focusing more on the WHY as opposed to constantly sharing the what. #HackLearning
