Welcome to #champforkids! Tonight we will reflect on Qs our students have on their minds!
Introduce yourself, where you are from, your role in ed, and tag a few friends to join the conversation!
Hello #champforkids family. Steph Dill, elementary SPED T in Colorado. I've been MIA lately due to some back issues, but I'm ready for tonights chat and happy to be back.
Hey #Champforkids friends. There is still time left to vote. I hope that you will take a couple seconds and vote for me tonight before midnight ET. https://t.co/Z1ifM29T1O
Q1 - Why do you say we can get a certain privilege if we do something, but then you never follow through? (Jade - gr 2)
🥊Reflect on the impact that follow through has on your Ss, relationships, and classroom cred!

Hello #champforkids. I'm Cathleen from Virginia. I teach 8th grade English and host #unlockingheroes a chat on student empowerment every Saturday at 10 a.m. EST. Happy to be here! 😊❤️👍
Q1 - Why do you say we can get a certain privilege if we do something, but then you never follow through? (Jade - gr 2)
🥊Reflect on the impact that follow through has on your Ss, relationships, and classroom cred!
#champforkids
A1 It's imperative to follow through or you became the teacher who called wolf. You can lose credibility with one tiny promise not fulfilled. #champforkids
A1 I’m pretty careful not to promise something and not follow through. Occasionally the promise has been delayed a day or two for unforeseen circumstances #champforkids
A1: They're listening, and our word is our bond. We must follow through on what we say. When I realize that I have forgotten to follow through on something, I always apologize and make it right. #champforkids
A1 I know we never intend to do it, but we teaching 5 classes a day I forget sometimes. That is why I have to keep all classes the same.
I acknowledge it, apologize, and make it up to them.
Kids will not forget if you break the trust. #champforkids
A1 if you promise your students something then you MUST follow through with it. Trust is lost if you say your going to do something but then don’t #champforkids
A1: I think following through builds trust. When we don’t follow through because things do come up, we need to own our actions and work to regain that trust In order to build strong relationships with our students. #champforkids
A1: Follow through and consistency are what Ss look for. If there isn’t the follow through, then Ss lose trust or do not want to work hard the next time. #champforkids
A1: Sometimes I forget. Between everything during the week some things fall through the cracks. If I'm reminded or remember later, I try to make sure the privilege is provided for. #champforkids
A1: Wow! Just reading that makes my heart hurt...I think we often times overlook the importance of following thru especially from the eyes of a child. Not doing so impacts relationships, trust, and even a child’s hope and safety in adults #champforkids
Q1 - Why do you say we can get a certain privilege if we do something, but then you never follow through? (Jade - gr 2)
🥊Reflect on the impact that follow through has on your Ss, relationships, and classroom cred!
#champforkids
A1 It’s a about the trust and that trust establishes relationships. Must follow through to show them they can trust you and you do what you say. #champforkids
A1: They're listening, and our word is our bond. We must follow through on what we say. When I realize that I have forgotten to follow through on something, I always apologize and make it right. #champforkids
A1: This one hurts. A lot. We need to be people of our word. We live by the mentality in our house that "Our 'yes' is 'yes'." With that said, there are times when schedules change, and we need to be transparent about that. We need to communicate if we must change. #champforkids
Q1 - Why do you say we can get a certain privilege if we do something, but then you never follow through? (Jade - gr 2)
🥊Reflect on the impact that follow through has on your Ss, relationships, and classroom cred!
#champforkids
A1. My grandma used to say ...you're only as good as your word. When teachers make promises and don't follow through we're showing that honesty and truth is not important. If we can't follow through we need to be honest and tell kids. Show kids that integrity matters #ChampForKids
A1: I'm sure I have said something and then honestly forgot. I know this hurts my littles and when remind me I apologize and do what I can to make the event/privilege happen. I know that no follow through is bad for everyone -we develop the trust and relationships. #champforkids
A1: Follow through is HUGE! If I fail to do it, then I own it with the Ss and come up with plan B together. I work very hard NOT to have this problem, though. Trust is huge! #champforkids
A1 It's imperative to follow through or you became the teacher who called wolf. You can lose credibility with one tiny promise not fulfilled. #champforkids
Q2 - Why are we summatively graded each day in math in things we just learned the day before w/out time to practice? (Charlotte gr 8)
🥊Share ways that you allow Ss to learn practice, apply, and demonstrate mastery while still collecting grades.
#champforkids
A1: I work hard to earn my students trust by being consistent. But on occassion I forget things and I let me students, politely, hold me accountable. #champforkids
A1 - I can be TERRIBLE about this! I believe in authenticity. So, there you have it. I can be a forgetter and a “well, let’s wait until...”
Blast, fine! We will do the pizza party THIS Friday, you win, Jade! I’ll do better. 😭 #champforkids
The key is owning it and making it right! We are all human but if we are consistently not following through on promises our Ss def start seeing right through us! #champforkids
A2 This question right here is why I stopped grading homework and practice. Students will not feel free to make mistakes if they know there is a "grade" attached to it. Feedback can be provided w/o a grade. Assess at end of concept, when Ss have more confidence. #champforkids
A1: I think following through builds trust. When we don’t follow through because things do come up, we need to own our actions and work to regain that trust In order to build strong relationships with our students. #champforkids
A2: Hands on projects, teaching each other, creating their own “tests”, throwing out fun brain teasers...the options are endless as long as our minds are open to wonder #champforkids
Q2 - Why are we summatively graded each day in math in things we just learned the day before w/out time to practice? (Charlotte gr 8)

#champforkids
A2
Learning experiences are purposeful, intentional & personalized for each Ss inclusive of their needs, strengths, interests & areas needed for personal & collective growth 😊
#champforkids
As soon as a grade is applied, S's are done with that part. On to the next thing that is graded. And grades don't show learning. And let the kids have another shot at it after they practice. #champforkids
A2: I encourage my Ts to use pre/post tests and then track progress throughout the sections. As Ss learn, their work is monitored and tracked to help with overall grades that go toward the cumulative grade. #champforkids
A2: everyday we start with a #fastandcurious - 3 to 5 minutes of questions related to our topic(s) that week. When finished I provide feedback and they get practice during the week with other items - I take the grade on Friday and they get see growth. #champforkids
A2: we use SBG (standards based grading) at our school and I love that we have time to truly help our kids practice the material before taking the assessments. #champforkids
A2. This question 💔. Why Charlotte, I don’t know! We need to empower U more & all kids to own their learning!!! More voice and choice💓. Student created #champforkids
A2 in ELA I only grade about 20 percent of what I assign. I give lots of small opportunities to apply skills. When I feel like they are ready I assess #champforkids
Q3 - Why is creative thinking not encouraged in upper elementary? (Sam gr 5)
🥊Reflect on creative opportunities in your classroom that allow Ss to show mastery. Share ideas that you feel are working and areas that you think you could tweak.
#champforkids
A2. I do not have a classroom, so I help students to master their behaviors. Academics are remediated, but not behaviors??? Makes no sense #champforkids
Q2 - Why are we summatively graded each day in math in things we just learned the day before w/out time to practice? (Charlotte gr 8)
🥊Share ways that you allow Ss to learn practice, apply, and demonstrate mastery while still collecting grades.
#champforkids
A2: I don't grade, but I do complete formative assessments through lessons and daily to see who has the skill, who needs a bit more learning, and who really just don't seem to understand at all. That way I can adjust groups and my teaching in a timely manner. #champforkids
A2: Standards-based grading is a great way to give kids time to master content. After all when learning to ride a bike we don't get it the first time .. we fall... Let's not judge on the first time but a week later when you're riding smoothly. #champforkids
A2: I don't believe that our grading and reporting systems match what our philosophies of education say. Practice should be measured, but not graded. @rickwormeli2 really does a much better job of saying all this then I do. #champforkids
Q2 - Why are we summatively graded each day in math in things we just learned the day before w/out time to practice? (Charlotte gr 8)
🥊Share ways that you allow Ss to learn practice, apply, and demonstrate mastery while still collecting grades.
#champforkids
A1: IMO it's essential for Ts to "follow through". Say what you do and do what you say! I got this motto from my mentor. If you can't follow through then Ss will figure out real quick you don't really mean what you say. #champforkids
A2: I look at effort for the things we are practicing, but I try hard (not always successfully but I try) to grade only what is standards based, etc. We aren't standards based, but I'm inching that way personally. Practice is important. #champforkids
Q2: We use standards based grading so we work towards mastery the entire school year. All students do not master content at the same rate so I am loving this shift! #champforkids
A2:These should be formative assessments unless all students showed mastery on a preassessment with the exception of a small misconception. We need to be fair to students and not rush because of the curriculum. #champforkids
A2 - whole group, small group, model it, practice w/ our bodies, practice it with activities in tubs, practice it with math games, practice it with computer skills, and if you think you know it, you have to teach it someone else. Miss Simon always needs help! #champforkids
A2: We use standards based grading so we work towards mastery the entire school year. All students do not master content at the same rate so I am loving this shift! #champforkids
A3 high school here but for every two heavy writing/reading assessment, I give one creative assessment. The HS standards focus more on dok 3 & 4 so it’s easier to be creative #champforkids
A3: The art room is primarily creative ideas and thinking so that’s not lacking here but what is lacking is students courage to think in unique ways. It’s like pulling teeth at times to let their minds enter the realm of “what if” #champforkids
Q3 - Why is creative thinking not encouraged in upper elementary? (Sam gr 5)
🥊Reflect on creative opportunities in your classroom that allow Ss to show mastery. Share ideas that you feel are working and areas that you think you could tweak.
#champforkids
A2: In a unique environment, so grading is different, but I am reading Stop Right Now. There is a section devoted to adjusting assessment. They argue that assessment/homework should be customized to the learner, and homework not given just because. Revolutionary. #champforkids
Q2 - Why are we summatively graded each day in math in things we just learned the day before w/out time to practice? (Charlotte gr 8)
🥊Share ways that you allow Ss to learn practice, apply, and demonstrate mastery while still collecting grades.
#champforkids
A1 I will respond to this from a personal pt of view. I am the P of a SPED young woman. I had to follow through for her sake. It was critical that she understand the value of follow through because without it I was simply setting her up for failure #champforkids
A3: Students are given a menu of choices to demonstrate their learning. Some of the successful avenues have been skits, paired work, and a podcast has served as an alternative to written responses. #champforkids
Q3 - Why is creative thinking not encouraged in upper elementary? (Sam gr 5)
🥊Reflect on creative opportunities in your classroom that allow Ss to show mastery. Share ideas that you feel are working and areas that you think you could tweak.
#champforkids
A2: Provide multiple ways to formatively assess skills. Find activities that make learning visible. I use stations where ss sort, match, build, act out, etc. also @PearDeck! I can predict how well ss will do with this formative data. #champforkids
A2: In Israel, we have "success quizzes" every 3 lessons or so. If you payed attention in class and took your notes, then you always get 100%. That way Ss that try very hard get good grades, even if they don't know the hard questions in the actual test. #champforkids
Absolutely right, Elizabeth! If we're formatively assessing + trying to understand our students' skill development, why are we giving them assessments they aren't ready to take? Time shouldn't be what we're holding constant for all learners. #champforkids
Q4 - Why do teachers want all of us to learn to do the same things at the same time? (Maya gr 2)
🥊Reflect on the differentiation practices that you have in place. What is going well and what would you like to make changes to?
#champforkids
A3: I would love to incorporate a Genius Hour into my weekly routine and I know many of my creative thinkers would really utilize this time well. Quarter 4 is just around the corner so I think I just need to stop procrastinating and implement! #champforkids#ShiftThis
Because, Charlotte, your teacher appears to be more interested in evaluating his/her direct instruction effectiveness than in your learning. I'm glad you are asking that question! It means you have good insight for when things aren't right. #champforkids
Q2 - Why are we summatively graded each day in math in things we just learned the day before w/out time to practice? (Charlotte gr 8)
🥊Share ways that you allow Ss to learn practice, apply, and demonstrate mastery while still collecting grades.
#champforkids
A3: kids should always be thinking creatively no matter what grade they’re in.
I’m a big fan of legos, Oreos, using markers/colored pencils for advertisements/posters/comics. #champforkids
A2 We should grade for learning not to just throw out grades. A grade shouldn’t be given until it has all been taught- setting goals and working with the S on the goal is important. #champforkids
A3: We try and use choice boards for students to choose how they want to practice the material. We also got approved to do final exam projects instead of just doing traditional exams. This brought in so much creativity! #champforkids
A3: Had a sad convo today. 6th Grader said he didn't like school except for Math & our Lab. I encouraged him to bring his passion - Math - into all his subjects. Find the joy (via Math) in ELA, History, etc. Math is everywhere. When he see that, he will have fun.
A3: Love genius hour and the creative community service learning that I'm doing. I get problems from the community and allow the kids a chance to solve them. I want to get more cross-curricular involvement with the service projects. #champforkids
A3: I always tried to give my Ss choice in how they demonstrated their mastery. One thing that I wish that I had tried was to give them an opportunity to let me know everything that they knew about a subject that I didn't ask on the test. #champforkids.
Q3 - Why is creative thinking not encouraged in upper elementary? (Sam gr 5)
🥊Reflect on creative opportunities in your classroom that allow Ss to show mastery. Share ideas that you feel are working and areas that you think you could tweak.
#champforkids
A4: As a history teacher, there is value in a shared/collective learning of an event. That being said, I am hopeful that the extension activities provide an opportunity for students to have voice and choice in their learning as well. Menus/RAFTs/hyperdocs etc. #champforkids
A1: when you follow through with your “yesses” you give ss a voice and a choice. It encourages them to keep asking, keep trying to advocate for themselves. It teaches them that hard work pays off! It tells them that their tt cares about more than just grades. #champforkids
A3: Creativity must be encouraged at all levels. I feel that there is not enough that pushes Ss to use creativeness. Utilize Ss choice and options in demonstrating learning. #champforkids
A3
@Buncee boards to show what they know
@Flipgrid for just about anything to demonstrate growth
Role plays , charades, group projects, pictographs , singing 🎤
#champforkids
And even then, it should be written in soft pencil.......ready to be erased when the student demonstrates a higher level of understanding. #champforkids
A2 We should grade for learning not to just throw out grades. A grade shouldn’t be given until it has all been taught- setting goals and working with the S on the goal is important. #champforkids
A3: This question breaks my heart. The answer unfortunately is standardized testing. I hear it all the time, “there’s just no time for the fun stuff.” We are not setting our students up for success as life long learners with that mentality. #champforkids
A1- It develops trust and respect in your room. I always follow through on my promises to show them that their participation and ideas matter.
#champforkids
Q1 - Why do you say we can get a certain privilege if we do something, but then you never follow through? (Jade - gr 2)
🥊Reflect on the impact that follow through has on your Ss, relationships, and classroom cred!
#champforkids
A4: working w/ 25 2nd graders from low to on and above grade level. I may present the same idea, yet the expectation for how each group or student presents their learning is differentiated for them. We are all at a different place, but need to learn the same thing. #champforkids
A4: Differentiation can be challenging in classes of 30 or more but I have tried my best to create art lessons that are open ended...I start the project and students finish in the way that fits them, some push past the box BUT all feel accomplished in their work #champforkids
Q4 - Why do teachers want all of us to learn to do the same things at the same time? (Maya gr 2)
🥊Reflect on the differentiation practices that you have in place. What is going well and what would you like to make changes to?
#champforkids
A5: Great Q Sam! I think it's very complicated to assess skills, and most Ts don't know how. The main problem is standardized testing that test knowledge. So we talk a lot about skills, but in reality most Ts still lecture in class to prepare Ss for the test. 😿#champforkids
A4:When I first started teaching I needed everyone on the same page. It made sense to me, but I was pushing Ss to get things done just for the sake of getting things done.
I have learned to appreciate having 5 different things happening and focusing on learning. #champforkids
A3: We are so ingrained to think that if it isn't a MC test, then it isn't valid. We let others feel that only MC tests count, and if we don't give one, then that means our class is "easy." Ugh. I fight this a lot, personally. #champforkids
A4: using data and flexible grouping. My Ts utilize weekly, daily, and unit data to know how to adjust. My 7th grade math T does an awesome job using many aspects of data to drive her daily differentiation. #champforkids
A4: one of my goals is to write down simplified objectives that ss can demonstrate using their own methods. They can show me and I can mark down when they can do it! #champforkids
As teachers, it's important to find ways for students to use their funds of knowledge to be successful in our classes, so if I build a relationship with a student who loves math in ELA + I know that, I can find ways to honor that literacy + help them be successful. #champforkids
A4 - I am in love with differentiation. We have 50 tubs filled with activities, each is differentiated to what students needs. I also love when students teach students, the experts aren’t always the same, either! There are times when Ss help Ss break through! #champforkids
A4: I encourage my kids to be different! Clear back at the beginning of the year, we talked about our differences and that's what makes us special. They know they can do most things their way as long as they try their best. #champforkids
Q5 - How can you support your students when they are feeling stressed? (Elena - gr 12)
🥊Reflect on how you assist your students with stress. How comfortable are your students in sharing their stress with you?
#champforkids
Q2 - Why are we summatively graded each day in math in things we just learned the day before w/out time to practice? (Charlotte gr 8)
🥊Share ways that you allow Ss to learn practice, apply, and demonstrate mastery while still collecting grades.
#champforkids
A4: Personalized learning. One of the best programs that I have seen put into place is the beginning of a personalized PD plan by my district @fcpsk12 They are going all in for staff. I look forward to what this looks like for Ss in the future. #champforkids.
Q4 - Why do teachers want all of us to learn to do the same things at the same time? (Maya gr 2)
🥊Reflect on the differentiation practices that you have in place. What is going well and what would you like to make changes to?
#champforkids
A3: i love project based activities. It’s amazing what ss come up with amazing ideas to show what they learn! Magnet inventions, Rube Goldberg machines, coming soon- painting with chemical reactions! (Hopefully!) #champforkids
All Ts, myself included, need to ask if my final grade is an evaluation of WHAT the student learned or HOW FAST they learned it.
How does your grading reward the S who learned it slower but deeper vs. the S who learned it quick, aced the test, then forgot it? #champforkids
A5. Treat it as a teachable moment. Real world connection at its best because we as adults feel stress. Walk through the stressful situation with them #ChampForKids
Q5 - How can you support your students when they are feeling stressed? (Elena - gr 12)
🥊Reflect on how you assist your students with stress. How comfortable are your students in sharing their stress with you?
#champforkids
A5 Many times we need to just listen and show them we are there for them. Also it’s important to teach calming strategies and help Ss name their feeling and work through it. #champforkids
Support students by being that person they can come to when they are having a bad day or are stressed. My students know they can come talk to me during my prep hour or whenever! My students are #1. #champforkids
A4: I have station tubs available for students to reinforce the areas they need to strengthen. I would like to have more time devoted to their passion projects. #champforkids
Q4 - Why do teachers want all of us to learn to do the same things at the same time? (Maya gr 2)
🥊Reflect on the differentiation practices that you have in place. What is going well and what would you like to make changes to?
#champforkids
A5 building strong relationships and getting to know your students allows you to be there for them and they will trust you to help them out #champforkids
A5: It’s sad to think Ss have such stress at such a young age so I do my best to relate to them. I was an anxious and shy child so make it a point to give unconditional compassion and kindness, check ins, and reminders that they matter #champforkids
Q5 - How can you support your students when they are feeling stressed? (Elena - gr 12)
🥊Reflect on how you assist your students with stress. How comfortable are your students in sharing their stress with you?
#champforkids
A4: I still give assignments due at the same time. However I would like to give kids more voice and choice even on creating the deadlines/due dates. The more power we give the kids the more they take ownership. Always working to make class better. #champforkids
A5: Been working on #SEL with my HS Ss in subtle ways, and will be training our staff in some simple ways to incorporate it. Deep breathing for Ss who are amped up has helped a bunch! My Ss are growing more comfortable sharing with me since I've started this. #champforkids
A5: When I can tell my students are feeling stressed I let them spend time in our calming corner and I ALWAYS make sure to give them some one-on-one time that day so that we can try and figure out a solution to their stress. #champforkids
A5: When a Ss is stressed I encourage them to take deep breaths, go get a drink, take a walk in the halls, move down the sensory wall I am creating. Sometimes just changing senory for a couple of minutes helps them calm and start work again. #champforkids
Right on! I worked in a district where every teacher had do the exact same thing at the exact same time in the name of compliance, which didn't work for kids: it wasn't about mastery of skills, it didn't leave room for choice + it wasn't responsive to their needs. #champforkids
Thanks for a great conversation and reflection tonight!
Join @PrincipalRLA next Tuesday as he takes us into the ring to talk about Culturally Responsive Teaching! #champforkids
A5: This breaks my heart. Stress is real. We need to remember our kids are still kids. This can be handled two-fold: We must look at our practices to see if we are the cause, but also be available to listen to their feedback and help them carry burdens. #champforkids
Q5 - How can you support your students when they are feeling stressed? (Elena - gr 12)
🥊Reflect on how you assist your students with stress. How comfortable are your students in sharing their stress with you?
#champforkids
A5 I know my students very well and have good relationships with them as a result I know when they are stressed. I offer time to chat if they need it. #champforkids
A4. Based on my student's reading levels its important that i am intentional with differentiating the concepts that i need them to learn. My "go to" is small groups with my instructional assistant ( who is AWESOME!) #champforkids
A5
We have comfort areas, blankets for soothing & regrouping, big comfy curbside find (yes~ get the truck!!!) rocker & a fabulous @Flipgrid tent to support the littles
#champforkids
A4. I am a HUGE advocate 4 inclusion! I want ALL my kiddos involved in project/activity. However, all will look a little different & present in a different way based on the learner! Focus on growth! Speaks to my ❤️ having daughter with DS. #abilitynotdisability#champforkids
A5. Let kids know stress is okay. However show kids how to do self-care. At the start of the year I like to have kids come up with a list of things that make them feel better. I use that list to support them. Show kids it's okay to not be at 100 percent all the time #champforkids
A5. Remember, your class is not that important. Think of what some of our kids go through when they leave or schools. Sometimes eating and sleeping outweighs those math problems. #champforkids
A5. My kiddos can chat with me anytime or simple come to me and say they need a break- can go to sensory room too- this area I wrote grant for and replenish every year. Trampoline, bubbles, playdough, tactile, etc... #champforkids
I have a "baseline" due date, but I'm willing to work with + support students who aren't ready to do or turn in an assessment based on formative assessments + their sense of their work. I also have a plan to move forward with students who have mastered the skills. #champforkids
True! I am presenting #SEL at the Sept. ACT conference in KC, and the surprising thing is they requested that as a topic for proposals! Awesomesauce! #champforkids
#champforkids thank you for a great chat. It was a pleasure to talk to such awesome educators❤️ Feel free to join #unlockingheroes a chat on student empowerment Saturday at 10 a.m. EST. Would love to have all these innovative brains there!
A4. MY MOTTO: EVERY CHILD & I mean EVERY CHILD CAN DO ANYTHING THEY SET THEIR MIND TOO! This includes Austistic, DS, ADHD, dyslexic, no matter special ability- All about ability- It just may take a little longer and look a little different💓#champforkids
As teachers, we have the power to condemn + add to stress, but we also have the choice to center trust, empathy + kindness in our relationships with students. We talk about the concept of "radical softness" in my class, especially with the trauma students face. #champforkids
A5- help them to understand the physical/emotional indications for stress as it is different for all. As well as help them understand zones of self regulation so they are able to pick strategies learned in class for the specific type of stress they are experiencing.#champforkids
A5- stress in kids is heartbreaking. And that’s just the stress we identify in them, not self-recognized tension. I think GETTING OUT LOUD as adults about our stressors and our solutions ensures we are the role models we aim to be #champforkids
Coach, please check out https://t.co/jXs5t5YUJC for resources that you can differentiate for your students. If you need/want to collaborate on a lesson, please let me know. Happy to support you and the valuable work you do! #champforkids
It's not where I started my teaching, but I'm glad I've evolved my thinking + my practice with the help people in my PLN (including awesome folks on Twitter!). I'm much happier as a teacher + students are learning more because I'm focused on mastery + their needs. #champforkids
A4- learning goal can be the same but helping students learn new skills one of the reasons I DI, as many times students want to stay in safe zone and always demonstrate skill/knowledge in same way. Choice and collaboration opportunities are safer. #champforkids
A1– follow through is a non negotiable if we expect for trust and integrity to be present in our educational relationships. Lacking FT perpetuates the exact same power dynamic that destroys S ownership. Ownership is a culture that thrives on FT #champforkids
