  • 4micheleJones Nov 15 @ 11:21 PM EST
Q2: Another essential element is that student do the work of math, not just listen to the teacher solve all the problems.. #utedchat
  • WendyRush16 Nov 15 @ 11:22 PM EST

  • HSG_UT Nov 15 @ 11:25 PM EST
    #UTedchat great ideas!
    • Player_Mrs Nov 15 @ 11:22 PM EST
One thing I have done is attend student extracurricular activities to show I care. I can then tie those experiences and student interests into story problems, or any math talk and discussion and connect it to real life experiences.
      In reply to @HSG_UT
  • MrPhelps_Math Nov 15 @ 11:25 PM EST

  • HSG_UT Nov 15 @ 11:26 PM EST
Love all these ideas from tonight’s #UTedchat
    • bridget_varner Nov 15 @ 11:21 PM EST
Teachers can strategically plan ahead for solutions students will try. Teachers then have students share strategies and learn from each other. Students can practice/try their friends strategy that is most effective. It’s all student driven.

  • covili - Moderator Nov 15 @ 11:28 PM EST
A3 I can’t think of a subject where Ss (and some Ts) need to have a growth mindset more than Math. We need to be willing to try things! #UTedChat
  • rogers_machelle Nov 15 @ 11:28 PM EST
A3 Growth Mindset increases equity because Ss get to see success in struggle, as well as in success w/o struggle- so all Ss find access #UTedChat
  • 4micheleJones Nov 15 @ 11:28 PM EST
Teachers should model growth mindset, own the mistakes we make, and acknowledge when we don't know something and then persevere in the discovery. #utedchat

    Yes! #utedchat

Flipped videos to help pre-teach, then in class I have them teach me the next day. They work on some problems in groups, discuss and help each other, then do problems on their own. The whole time I’m working 1 on 1 or in groups. Games/extensions to extend/practice. #utedchat
  • BeckyUnker Nov 15 @ 11:30 PM EST
A-3 I observed a 7th grade math classroom today in Juab District where they are implementing growth mindset and a student said “ You can’t learn from the chances you don’t take”... growth mindset at work! #utedchat
  • bridget_varner Nov 15 @ 11:30 PM EST
A3: Grow mindsets would help because there’s multiple solutions. Being open to other ideas will help all Ss learn. #utedchat
  • WendyRush16 Nov 15 @ 11:31 PM EST
A3- Growth mindset in math increases equity by enhancing critical thinking skills in all areas! Math teaches logic, reasoning, problem solving, application and more! #UTedChat
  • 4micheleJones Nov 15 @ 11:32 PM EST
Yes. My students are willing to show confusion, ask questions and struggle because they have seen me do it, especially those students who don't have a lot of confidence in their mathematical ability. #utedchat

A3 Does watching a teacher struggle with a problem and then get it encourage a growth mindset in students? #UTedChat

A3: Growth mindset can help change the attitude and dialogue about math. #Utedchat
  • DeborahGatrell1 Nov 15 @ 11:32 PM EST
A3: Too many students think they "can't do math." We have to change that equation! Biggest key is helping students learn from their mistakes & credit for succeeding once they 'get it' so there is reason to keep trying. And for some, one-on-one tutoring perhaps. #utedchat
  • teachindavis Nov 15 @ 11:33 PM EST
A3 Primary grade teachers are brilliant modeling mindset with students. They help our youngest learners feel comfortable making mistakes! #utedchat

A3: understand that math is reasoning and problem solving, not answer getting. #slowmath #utedchat
  • Darling_Math Nov 15 @ 11:36 PM EST
A4: Model the process. I still see teachers who refuse to admit when they are wrong. This sends the wrong message. Struggling, failing, owning it, starting over... lather, rinse, repeat. Students then see that it's okay to fail, it's just not okay to quit. #UTedChat

I agree. And yet, shouldn’t a results orientation - where we actually *mean* that no child should be left behind - drive us toward a deeper understanding of our students (empathy), such that we’re able to provide the supports (equity) that all students need to succeed? #UTedChat

Maybe in part, but I think it's more likely not getting support they need to understand it in a way that makes sense to them. There's a million ways to explain things, but if I only know one or two, they might not be what the student needs and we both leave frustrated. #UTedChat
