Thank you for joining us tonight. We are discussing Equity for students in mathematics.
My challenge:
As each of reflect tonight, be sure to include all students, including those with disabilities in our replies.
#UTedChat
Deborah Gatrell, Social Studies teacher. IT'S ALL HISTORY. Equity is important in every discipline and classroom. I don't believe in "can't" unless it's followed by "yet." #utedchat
Spencer, former physics, chemistry, astronomy teacher. Current grad student at BYU studying Instructional Psychology and Technology, interest in EdTech and policies that lead to inclusion. #UTedChat
A1- not advancing on concepts just because a child doesn’t master rote memorization. For example can’t move onto more complex math because a child hasn’t memorized math facts #UTedChat
Care to elaborate on 'mathematical thinking?' When I first saw that I read 'magical thinking...' Which is what some people think math is, I imagine ;-)! #UTedChat
Most important change I made:
Started asking "what supports do they need to learn a my expected level?"
Not
How can I make it easier to learn?
#UTEdChat
I’m here (Skyridge high librarian) but sewing a Wonder Woman skirt for tomorrow’s superhero cosplay, in case I disappear here and there! 😀#utedchat#librarylife
A1 During cooperative math activities, pairing students w/ like abilities so they can problem solve and articulate their thinking more comfortably. #utedchat
Agreed!!! (Speaking from personal experience of not knowing how to read the face of a clock in 2nd grade, this being put in lowest level math.) #STEM was still my path. #utedchat
A1 During cooperative math activities, pairing students w/ like abilities so they can problem solve and articulate their thinking more comfortably. #utedchat
I interpret this to mean that we are doing away with tracking and allowing all students access to the best teachers and to each others ideas. Everyone can benefit from same rich experience! #UTedChat
Tracking leads to the loss of quality dialogue. I can tell a students understanding by the vocabulary they use. why rob students of peer models.
#UTEdChat
A1 Considering ways one might differentiate instruction or independent problem solving while planning... As always, teacher planning is key to student learning. #utedchat
#UTEdChat A1. Equity in mathematics education means providing students with the cultural, scaffolding, cognitive, and other supports they need to be successful.
A1 Sometimes inclusion and equity is giving students a reason to try. This is what I like about problem/probject based learning in science classes. #UTedChat
A2 An essential is an environment that is open and free from judgement. Ts encourage growth mindset and teach Ss to accept and grow from mistakes
#utedchat
A2 An equitable classroom includes math talk strategies as well as discussion between students about mathematical concepts. Students become teachers. #utedchat
A2: Competent teachers, appropriate levels of support for teachers and students, diverse ways to access material and demonstrate learning... Also what @vb_kristin and @4micheleJones said... #UTedChat
An equitable classroom is one that is lead by a teacher trained in instruction using multiple modalities, and embraces individual learning needs. #UTedChat
A2- for any class (not just math) eliminating boundaries like lack of supplies. Have pencils and paper for kids! Have graphing calculators kids can checkout to take home for the year. Have white boards and markers etc. #UTedChat
Q2- In a virtual education setting, an equitable classroom looks like a teacher who notices those who are not responding and has a plan to engage them. #utedchat
A2-creating a safe place to make mistakes, ask questions, not get stuck on rote memorization and speed. Make understanding the purpose of math and how to problem solve the focus #UTedChat
A2- Making sure that whatever curriculum we are using is accessible to all students. Are we providing ample supports so all students can be successful in mathematics. #utedchat
One thing I have done is attend student extracurricular activities to show I care. I can then tie those experiences and student interests into story problems, or any math talk and discussion and connect it to real life experiences.
Teachers can strategically plan ahead for solutions students will try. Teachers then have students share strategies and learn from each other. Students can practice/try their friends strategy that is most effective. It’s all student driven.

#UTEdChat A2. The most essential component to an equitable classroom is empathy and/or a firm commitment to truly understand the needs of the students we serve.
Teachers should model growth mindset, own the mistakes we make, and acknowledge when we don't know something and then persevere in the discovery. #utedchat
Q3 When students embrace the idea that math involves meaningful struggle, they work well together and fee comfortable taking risks in front of others.#utedchat
Flipped videos to help pre-teach, then in class I have them teach me the next day. They work on some problems in groups, discuss and help each other, then do problems on their own. The whole time I’m working 1 on 1 or in groups. Games/extensions to extend/practice. #utedchat
A-3 I observed a 7th grade math classroom today in Juab District where they are implementing growth mindset and a student said “ You can’t learn from the chances you don’t take”... growth mindset at work! #utedchat
A3- Growth mindset in math increases equity by enhancing critical thinking skills in all areas! Math teaches logic, reasoning, problem solving, application and more! #UTedChat
Yes. My students are willing to show confusion, ask questions and struggle because they have seen me do it, especially those students who don't have a lot of confidence in their mathematical ability. #utedchat
A3: Too many students think they "can't do math." We have to change that equation! Biggest key is helping students learn from their mistakes & credit for succeeding once they 'get it' so there is reason to keep trying. And for some, one-on-one tutoring perhaps. #utedchat
Sorry #UTedChat crew, but I’ve got some family stuff for the 2nd week in a row so I can’t be here with y’all. Hopefully I can join on Nov 29th w/ @MissPlott. Take some good notes for me. #DadChat
A4: Model the process. I still see teachers who refuse to admit when they are wrong. This sends the wrong message. Struggling, failing, owning it, starting over... lather, rinse, repeat. Students then see that it's okay to fail, it's just not okay to quit. #UTedChat
I agree. And yet, shouldn’t a results orientation - where we actually *mean* that no child should be left behind - drive us toward a deeper understanding of our students (empathy), such that we’re able to provide the supports (equity) that all students need to succeed? #UTedChat
A4 I think using a launch-explore-discuss model for mathematics instruction can create that environment where students can discover answers for themselves and see that positive things can come from the struggle. #utedchat
I’m sure there are several videos of me dancing floating around somewhere. Our faculty has been slacking on dance practices this year, I brought it up today actually. Who doesn’t feel better after dancing? #utedchat
Maybe in part, but I think it's more likely not getting support they need to understand it in a way that makes sense to them. There's a million ways to explain things, but if I only know one or two, they might not be what the student needs and we both leave frustrated. #UTedChat
A4 Perhaps sharing stories and examples of well-known people who failed and then persisted using mathematics. Kids love stories of real people who achieved great things! #utedchat
A4: Model that you use math all the time “in real life”...I teach a costuming class for flex and always show them my calculations and diagrams when drafting patterns. Geometry is critical...and I share ways I’ve messed it up! #utedchat
It is challenging to explain math in many ways. you must have a very deep understanding of the content. This is why I am still learning 9th grade math even though I have a Masters degree in it :)#utedchat
Do you do awesome stuff in your classroom? You should come share your awesomeness & present at #UCET18!
Submissions are due Dec 22nd!
See you at #YOUcet! #UTedChathttps://t.co/0l8MmAOc5I
I'm still learning Social Studies too! Isn't that the mark of a life long learner? Isn't that what we all should be doing as educators? Isn't that part of #growthmindset? #utedchat
Engaging all students in 21st Century learning and @deeperlearning by having them participate in rich tasks that require and promote: creativity, communication, critical thinking and collaboration! #UTedChat
A-4 Teachers can help with a GM by explicitly teaching GM vocabulary! When an error is made, teach the language that students can use to express their need for further teaching! #UTedChat
A5- Meet with your colleagues! Reinforce a GM in all subjects! Discuss it in PLC, at lunch ( if you are a teacher nerd, like me), Tweet about it, make it a hot topic of conversation in your professional circles! #UTedChat
A5 Provide a variety of ways for Ss to show mastery, differentiate instruction, allow for student choice and pace, spend time with all, those that struggle and those that get it, plan ways for each Ss to succeed #utedchat
A5 Be personally accountable to teach the most challenged students. Volunteer to teach the class where kids need to catch up. If not you, then who? #utedchat
A5 Tchr actions are always critical. Discuss ideas w/ others, #observe me, Share articles, tweet about it, MODEL it in your own classroom. Your Ss will share it as they succeed and love math- the joy will spread #utedchat
A5: Advocate for students. Help those who don't understand equity and Growth mindset see the "light."
Helping students conquer their fear of failing, and with it their fear of math
Assist students in finding the fun in math and in doing so, creating life-long learners. #UTedChat
I know a little of the history (my bread and butter, after all), but I'm rusty on the higher math and I don't know all the 'new ways' to teach it... #utedchat We'll have to chat.
In reply to
@MrPhelps_Math, @4micheleJones, @HSG_UT
A: Cross curricular activities can help. In my social studies department meeting today we had a math teacher @Darling_Math come help us and watched cool math videos. #UTedChat
A5: More collaboration and cross-curricular or inter-disciplinary (or whatever you want to call it) work to show the connections, the value, and the #growthmindset in math specifically and learning generally. #UTedChat
#UTEdChat A5. Keep moving forward. This is challenging but critically important work; not only for the students we serve, but for the future of our communities. #equitymatters
I never ate dinner, I have no electricity, but I just can’t end an hour with each of you and not be happy and ready to change the world! Thank you for all the work each of you do, you amaze me! #utedchat
Thank you for your extremely thoughtful responses. This is a vital topic and your responses reflect its importance.
