Daniel Araujo, from the Bay Area, California. I'm a middle school English teacher. The thing I value most about my role is being able to have a generational impact every day I step into my classroom. #NT2t
Q1 - What is one thing you will change this year regarding how you manage your classroom? #NT2t (“Those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” George Bernard Shaw)
A1 - This year I'm going to change the way I call students back to attention altogether. Last year I used music cues and count downs; this year I want to use quieter signals, like a hand sign. #nt2t
We aren't allowed to take away recess as punishment! One teacher would have students walk around the basketball court x number of times instead. Maybe should have had them run around the court... #Nt2t
Welcome! I remember feeling so overwhelmed when I first started on Twitter. My tip would be to join chats like this and just start following people in the chat if it seems like a good fit. Also, get a profile picture and bio so people know more about you! :D #nt2t

Q2 - What is one thing you will change this year regarding how you plan your curriculum? #NT2t (“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” - Nelson Mandela)
"Silent wolf" is one I might use if the Hunger Games symbol doesn't work out. Sometimes that elicits the song from the movie to be sung sadly. I read about a teacher using just her hand on her shoulder to signal to students. So I'm still looking for a good one i guess. #nt2t
Hannah here from outside DC, USA. My current role is mother of a 1 year old, and what I value most is being able to apply my teacher skills to my own little one, and also grow my own skills in classroom management (aka, discipline and structure). #NT2t
For sure! It definitely takes awhile to get used to all of this, but do it on your own time, at your own pace. Don't be afraid to ask for help, which it doesn't seem like you are! #NT2t
Think, that’s the right way. We can’t close our doors at school to technology. It’s part of everyday life and we have to teach our kids how to use it (search and research, writing, creating, evaluate, …) - 21st century skills #nt2t
I don't know if I could keep up that energy! That's part of why things like TLAP and such are very intimidating to me. I want to just start with something small, but it seems in all the books like it's all or nothing. :( #NT2t

I have switched roles and am going back into the classroom. My school is on board with technology and between my kiddos devices and the ones in the classroom every student will have access. Soooo... I am going to take advantage of it!! #nt2t
A1: When I go back, there is so much I will change! My first year was very rocky with classroom management, but I learned SO much on such a curve, and now I have parenting experience too. #NT2t
Q3 - What is one thing you will change this year regarding how you communicate with parents? #NT2t (“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” - Rumi)
A1b: One thing I did for classroom management that I did like was saying 'When I say go but not before...' before I gave instructions. It made students listen closely for when I did say 'go', and also stopped the S that always starts moving before you're done. #NT2t
A2 - I'm working on using the Understanding by Design framework to plan units and then making sure my assessments and daily classroom activities point and lead students to my goals for the quarter. Also, I plan on implementing a workshop classroom this year. #nt2t
A3: This was such a challenge in the area I used to teach in. Many parents didn't speak English and translators were limited so it was very difficult to do impromptu calls home or gets notes translated. Looking into what sort of technology could help bridge that gap! #NT2t
Hey Alex @alexrajohnson glad to catch you online. Please join in the awesome chat #NT2t using the #NT2t and do share your thoughts. I think Ines @seni_bl is leading the chat!
A3 - This year I'm planning on changing the frequency of my communication with parents. I want to contact and hear from parents more often. Whether that's phone calls or emails, I also want to contact home with focused, positive stories than I did last year. #nt2t
General Question: Does anyone's school have policies about texting parents? Do you have a personal policy? It seems like that is often the most convenient and quickest route of communication in today's world. #NT2t
Q4 -What is one thing you will change this year regarding how you communicate with your students? #NT2t (“Change will not come if we wait for some other person, or if we wait for some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” - Obama)
One great advantage of ClassDojo is the translation aspect! It doesn't work for private messages, unfortunately, but you can post a message to an individual child's 'story' and parents can translate it to at least get the gist of what you are saying. #NT2t
A1: I look forward to findings ways to provide students with more #choice & #voice in the classroom. Giving them opportunities to self assess, and self report back on their progress. #NT2t I haven’t worked with #middleschool students as much as I will be this year. #excited
It's a classroom where students will have dedicated time to work on writing and engage in the revision journey with peers and their teacher. I will be conferencing with them individually and "status-checking" them daily. Also, dedicated reading time at least once a week. #nt2t
We have strict restrictions regarding communication with parents - data security. So it’s not allowed to share information about students e.g. homework because of data security reasons. #nt2t
A2: we have been talking a lot about the importance of #writing across the curriculum, so I will be providing ways for students to #write daily, even in my #design classroom. Short activities at the beginning of the class and building on this through a journal. #Reflection#NT2t
A4 - Nothing! I have always been excellent at student relationships and communication. I will be certainly be following the other answers though ! Always open to new ideas!! #nt2t
A1: I will pay even greater attention to ensuring that the seating arrangements in the classroom change more often and are handled flexibly ... also the teacher's desk
#NT2t sorry for jumping in late
A3: parent communication has always been vital to the work we do, and this year even more so. I want to explore the #localization of resources into the many languages our parent community speaks. Celebrating mother tongue while expanding understanding. #NT2t

My school didn't have a policy but I was personally uncomfortable with parents having my number. I did end up sharing it with a few chaperones and drivers, who later would text me, and I realized I valued my boundary. I hope to not have to do that this coming year. #nt2t
Q5 -What is one thing you will change this year regarding how you collaborate with your peers/colleagues? #NT2t (“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” - Leo Tolstoy)
I definitely understand that, I would feel uncomfortable about all the parents having my number. Maybe there is an app that generates a different number but can be used normally? #NT2t
A2: we have been talking a lot about the importance of #writing across the curriculum, so I will be providing ways for students to #write daily, even in my #design classroom. Short activities at the beginning of the class and building on this through a journal. #Reflection#NT2t
A4 - I'm going to be using Google classroom this year for the first time and I'm hoping that makes announcements and reminders easier for students to see those and keep track of them. #nt2t

A5: Now that I have a little more confidence and knowledge, I would definitely be more quick to reach out to colleagues and team members for help or advice. #NT2t
A4: with standards based assessment, it’s so important to provide #students with feedback (timely & regular). My goal will be to ensure that this takes place so all Ss can be successful. #NT2t
Yessss, that’s the right attitude. We are better all together than alone. Ask for help, look for support - colleagues and peers should always be the first point to ask for advice! #nt2t
A5: Now that I have a little more confidence and knowledge, I would definitely be more quick to reach out to colleagues and team members for help or advice. #NT2t
Time for me to head out, a busy Saturday in store for today. Always refreshing to start my day with the #NT2t community! Have a great day/night everyone!
A5: working at a new school that believes so strongly in #AdaptiveSchools & #collaborative norms is exciting. I look forward to leveraging protocols and really #listening to my peers to promote powerful & meaningful collaboration. #nt2t
Sometimes faking is help. That’s right! But I think there are lots of people who would like to cheer you up. And sometimes we must create our own little places where we can fill our batteries. #nt2t
Q6 -What is one thing you will change this year regarding the way you collaborate with your PLN? #NT2t (“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead)
A5 - I'm hoping to engage with more peers and draw on experience from more teachers. Last year, I really only worked with one other teacher. I'm hoping to jump in on the bigger vision going on at the whole school by collaborating with more classrooms and their teachers. #nt2t
A6: today is an example of my “one thing” with respect to my #PLN - #Twitter chats! I haven’t been as involved as I should be, and want to make an effort to be engaged online, sharing my ideas and learning from my peers. Thank you for tonight’s opportunity! #excited#nt2t
#NT2t A5: what is valid for students is true for colleagues too I find. Celebrating achievements and focusing on the positive developments are vital. I wish there was more of that from school leaders. My goal: Compliment a fellow teacher every day!

A6 - Engaging in #Edchat and other Twitter chats and interactions! I'm really excited about this impact on my teaching this year. I've already learned a lot this summer from finally getting on board with the education community. #nt2t
A6: For me Twitter is the best way to learn - so many amazing people I can learn from, so many opportunities for dive in new topics, chances to meet great educators to form an inspiring #PLN. Thank you Twitter! #nt2t
If you work with youth, as staff or volunteer, in non school #tutor#mentor program, what does your #PLN look like? Do you have a connected network like this? Learn from educator chats like #nt2t, #clmooc, #writrout, etc

I've toyed with the idea of doing that, but I can't get past my fear of a parent or student abusing the number in some way. Any advice on this or experience with different situations, positive or negative, after giving your phone number out? #nt2t
