The #TXLchat provides a forum for Texas librarians (but not limited to Texas librarians) to create collaborative connections, share educational resources, and foster life-long learning.
A1: Libraries have books for everyone, including people who are not an avid readers. A person could find a book that he/she can relate to and may start reading more books because of that one experience. How great would that be? #txlchat

A1 A diverse collection helps the world seem a bit "smaller". Commonalities are discovered and that helps build bridges to new understandings. #txlchat
A1 If your collection is diverse, it shows your stakeholders that you care about equally representing everyone in your community. This strengthens ties and shows that inclusivity is important to you and your library #txlchat
A1.) Diverse characters/Diverse settings strengthen communities by allowing everyone to ‘walk in someone else’s shoes’. (Tolerance, empathy, acceptance, etc.) Plus, S’s who see a reflection of themselves in diff media will feel welcomed & empowered. Win-win! #txlchat
A2 I was given a breakdown of the numbers of students that selected a language other than English as the language most spoken at home. Speaking to our ELL/ESL teachers is also helpful. #txlchat
A2 P.1 That's a good question. Not sure if there is a good assessment tool yet to measure collection diversity. You can definitely take a sample of your materials randomly and research whether the authors and characters represent the wider world #txlchat
A2 I watch and talk to students. Do we have the books they want? The readalikes? Are they able to find books with characters who look and talk like them? There’s no magic number. #txlchat
A2 P.2 If that random sample doesn't, librarians should make a concerted effort to make sure they are analyzing their new purchase through a lens of representing diverse ethnic groups, genders, and sexual orientations #txlchat
A2.) When assessing diversity in our collection, I use District Online Catalog, @MackinVIA search by category, run reports, etc. I look for “mirror” books & “window” books to ensure diversity in our collection. Gotta put in the work. #txlchat#WeNeedDiverseBooks
A2 value campus diversity to address book %’s of your collection. I use Follett Resource List I create for ethnicity & diversity of our collection #TXLchat
A3: From the ALA’s Library Bill of Rights “Libraries should provide materials and information presenting all points of view on current and historical issues. Materials should not be proscribed or removed because of partisan or doctrinal disapproval.” #txlchat

A3 I'm lucky enough to have a student select the library as her ISM project (self selected year long study). She is creating a diversity fair and one piece of that will be to promote diverse books. I like to promote all year -not just during a special month. #txlchat
A3 Make sure you have diverse books displayed, you make celebrate and display any books for diverse holidays and yearly celebrations, you promote those books and events on social media challenge, expose your library club students to diverse books and authors #txlchat
A3.) When purchasing, consider: @JrLibraryGuild has subscriptions that cater to diverse characters- “City High School” category, @TXLA#TAYSHAS List includes a plethora of diversity, follow @diversebooks & @MrSchuReads for recommendations, & ask S’s for suggestions. #txlchat
A3 It sounds simple, but you have to be mindful of the books you display. Are there diverse topics, characters, authors? Pay attention to names, book covers/jackets. #txlchat

A4 I tend to look more for literary non-fiction in my collection and I'm actively looking for voices that represent my students, both culturally and socially. #txlchat

A3 before a class comes in or weekly, I look for bks that are not “selling” standing them up in the shelves to show our diverse collection of authors & bks #TXLchat
A4 One of my recent favs include Writings on the Wall by Kareem Abdul Jabbar. He has pieces that touch on a variety of issues that explore cultural, social, and generational differences. #txlchat
#txlchat I enjoyed Undefeated: Jim Thorpe and the Carlisle Indian School Football Team. Interesting and explained some of the treatment of Indians, but didn't delve too deeply.
A4 We would do another random search of materials and see how diverse the collection is. We definitely need to analyse our NF collection through this lens, I feel like we'll see we have a lot of room for improvement in this area. I LOVED Badass Bygone Broads and Brazen. #txlchat
A4 Poetry & Sports - The playbook : 52 rules to aim, shoot, and score in this game called life & Out of wonder : poems celebrating poets both by @kwamealexander#txlchat

A4.) I don’t read a lot of NF. I know, how dare I?! 😱🤔🤦🏻♀️ The last diverse, NF I read was @dianeguerrero__#InTheCountryWeLove which discusses issues of #Immigration, adversity, overcoming obstacles, family, etc. S’s need to see their struggle represented out there. #txlchat
I read The Inexplicable Logic of my Life in 2 days. SO great! and has multiple diverse characters, but they are all just people--which is the beauty to realize we are all the same down deep. #txlchat
A4 Watch for #TopazList selections in January. Several amazing titles I’ve read recently What Do You Do With a Voice Like That? by @Bartography The Unwanted: Stories of the Syrian Refugees by Don Brown and Things That Make White People Uncomfortable by Michael Bennett #txlchat
A5: Favorite Book Crown: An Ode To The Fresh Cut by Derrick Barnes @authorddb Going to have our Superintendant @Dr_McFarland reading it to students soon #txlchat
A5 Agreed @sharongullet and I look forward to seeing the film. The book-film connection may increase Ss motivation to engage in critical discussions. #txlchat
He addresses so articulately what it was like coming of age as a Black man, and one who valued arts and education, using athletics as a way to achieve a quality education. He talks about race and religion, discipline and respect. So powerful! #txlchat
