Hello! I'm Lindsey Bishop, I'm also a student at Dakota State University. I'll be student teaching next fall/spring and hopefully graduating in May 2020 as well! #TLAP
BEYOND a shadow of a doubt, make-work homework has to go. We spend so much time talking about this on the pod. It is hurting our students, both physically, and mentally. #tlap
a1. #tlap The biggest hurdle for new or innovative thinking is unlearning what we know/are comfortable with. Its hard since in some ways its part of who we are! So we should stop being too connected to tried/tested ways atleast until new ideas have been discussed/brainstormed.
A1: Stop focusing on grades and focus on learning. Stop doing things the way we've always done them... just because. Stop limiting students' dreams #tlap
A1: Ts need to stop demeaning other Ts who are willing to take chances and try new things, we’re in this together; stop looking for the perfect time to try something new and instead make a plan and try it. #tlap
A2: Stop hoping for snow days and weekends! We have the best job in the world because we get to change the world of students every day! People need to see we love our work, not that we love to be out of work. #tlap
A1) I wish we could stop having to take on so many initiatives. I wish we could pick something like curriculum and Instruction and put our whole heart there and then the next year dabble in another area! #tlap
A1 This one is a good one. Let us stop finding excuses. It is easy to find reasons why things will not work; this often makes it easy to say no to new challenges. But we need to embrace the yes. Let us try and be willing to make magic happen. Never give up! #tlap#StopRightNow39
A1: Stop:
*giving hours of homework that can be replaced last minute by extra credit if a S didn't do it
*not allowing late work
*not allowing for retests
#tlap#StopRightNow39
A1: We should stop making assumptions - about our students, about their families, about our colleagues. And if we are going to make assumption, we should assume the positive. #tlap
A1: Complaining about kids. Find a solution! Work together! Meet the students and learn where they are, what they need, and how they will be successful!
#tlap#StopRightNow39
A1 - Just purchased this book and it has some great ideas. We need to stop making assumptions, expecting that programs will fix our student achievement concerns. #tlap
A1: Stop hoping for snow days and weekends! We have the best job in the world because we get to change the world of students every day! People need to see we love our work, not that we love to be out of work. #tlap
Please stop covering walls with posters. Kids don’t need to “read” your walls. It is super distracting for kids with ADD (and teachers with ADD, too) #tlap
A1: Stop testing for testing's sake. Does it have a purpose? What will it tell us about our learners that we can't identify in another way? Is it authentic? Does it cause undue stress to Ss (& Ts). #tlap
A1: One of things to stop is accepting that 1) we cannot change things, and 2) that just because we've done it that way a long time it's a good way to do them.
#TLAP
A1) Sometimes as teachers/leaders we fill the space with our own voices. Sometimes we should just stop talking. Stop (talking), collaborate, and listen. #tlap
A1: Quit…
a. Showing up late for meetings.
b. Taking it personally when S’s & don’t do what you want them to do.
c. Staying in your lane – be a risk taker!
#tlap#StopRightNow39
A1: We should stop doling out discipline in a one-size-fits-all manner. Yes, we should absolutely hold students accountable, but they misbehave for a reason. Why? Discipline is love and discipline is teaching. Discipline should not be about power and convenience. #tlap
A1 Worksheets with 30 problems on them when you could ask 5 great and unique questions to each student. Next, turning the 30 question worksheet into a google classroom activity. #TLAP
A1 Stop using the word "rigor" to describe the curriculum, lesson or vision of the district.
Rigor comes from the Latin word - Rigor Mortis - which means "of death" and "stiff."
Use vigor instead.
Vigor means enthusiastic, energetic, engaged.
That's the word you want to use
#tlap
Dang...I forgot my GIF on first one...
Just sliding in here tonight like...STOKED to have @casas_jimmy and @Jeff_Zoul hosting!
Tara--Educator, Coach, Author, DBC Inc Book-Pimp...aka all things awesomesaucy! #tlap@burgessdave
A1: Thinking we need to know everything about a certain strategy or program before we try it. Learning through exploration gives us and students the ability to make mistakes and reflect. #tlap#StopRightNow39
A1: Silent classrooms where students complete pencil paper (even if it's on a computer) assignments to prove compliance rather than comprehension. #tlap
Denise Murai Retweeted Jeff Zoul
A1: One of things to stop is accepting that 1) we cannot change things, and 2) that just because we've done it that way a long time it's a good way to do them.
#TLAP
A1: We need to stop 1) assuming the worst of others 2) only giving tests at the end of a unit 3) developing lessons beginning w/a resource 4) using 1 method of instruction 5) focusing on what Ts and principals cannot do & instead focus on their strengths - build from there. #tlap
A1b We need to stop being negative. There are so many issues and challenges in education already; we know them. Let us erase the negative and flood our learning communities with positivity. Keep that smile going, keep the HOPE alive and do the imPOSSIBLE. #tlap#StopRightNow39
STOP boring and low-value homework packets!!!! Want to reframe if homework? (If you insist on giving it) Check out my gift shop video here: https://t.co/ieIFSG27Dq#tlap Another coming soon! #StopRightNow39
A1: We should stop doubting our impact on kids!!! Some days are rough and we can question our ability to make a difference. Every day can be a big day. Every interaction can be a game changer. Every moment can be an opportunity. #tlap
A1. putting a grade on items that we expect students to reflect on. If there's a grade on it, most students will not reflect. Focus on the feedback. #tlap
A1: Stop thinking kids can't go outside just because it's cold. C'mon, we all know sickness comes from germs and there are more inside that outside #tlap
A1 Oh the list is long... homework, grades tied to behavior, grades not tied to a standard, zeros, worksheets, textbooks, negativity, most discipline systems in schools that aren’t restorative #tlap
#tlap Quoting the magnet on my fridge "the people who say it can't be done should not interrupt the people who are already doing it!" In other words, stop listening to folks who tell you that your ideas are crazy.
A1: We need to stop relying on outdated methods to teach kids. We have a wealth of knowledge about how kids learn. We need to be innovative and responsive. We teach the kids we have, not the ones we previously had or wish we ha.#TLAP
A1: We need to stop seeing teaching as imparting knowledge. Teaching should be exploration of concepts and skills where students make sense of their own thinking #TLAP
A1 We should stop focusing on . teaching classes, and content focused, and teach students, spend time investing in relationships first #tlap#StopRightNow39
#tlap A1 Things we should stop doing is to assume the skill level of a St is linked to their IQ. BELIEVE every St can achieve. #ItWorks! Just had a junior pass his FIRST EVER state assessment! He saw this wall every day in my room. #ItWorks!
A1 The big ones for me would be to STOP
1⃣Dialogue around performance & accountability
2⃣Testing regimes - student, school, system & country comparisons
3⃣Thinking of students as investments for the future
4⃣Inequities & barriers across education
#tlap
A1: Seeing as though I've read the book, I could list 39 Stops! @casas_jimmy@Jeff_Zoul LOL
One biggie thought is meaningless homework! Homework with no feedback or ability to reinforce skills! #StopRightNow39#TLAP
I think that if teachers are still asking for permission it's because they don't know our core. We can't build capacity if people are always asking for permission. #tlap#StopRightNow39
While we're here, if you're giving assessments like multiple-choice recall quizzes to assess student reading, now's the time to reconsider. These sorts of assessments don't get kids to read + they actively work against students' love of + engagement with texts. #TLAP
Agreed, because ultimately we want students learning, so does it matter if they retest if they go and learn it in a way that makes sense for them? #tlap#StopRightNow39
A1: Giving up on an initiative that has been in place for less than 2 years. If it was good enough to try, you need to give it some time to gain footing. #tlap
A1:We should STOP acting like principals have to be serious, stern, office dwelling people that few see unless they're in trouble. Instead principals should be lead learners, joyful, present, & active in student and teacher successes throughout the building! #tlap#joyfulleaders
Such an important consideration for school leaders! Know our desired impact. Identify evidence-based practices that achieve this impact. Narrow our focus to the 2-3 practices that we will get REALLY good at this year. Get really good. Reflect on the impact of what we did. #tlap
A1) I wish we could stop having to take on so many initiatives. I wish we could pick something like curriculum and Instruction and put our whole heart there and then the next year dabble in another area! #tlap
A1: Stop stepping in during uncomfortable silence or when there is struggle (for teachers & ss) Losing site that little things matter to little ones - so stop making light of them #tlap
A1. We could stop preventing Ss from:
1. Retaking tests in the name of preparing them for the future.
2. Leaving class to go to the bathroom more than a four times a quarter.
3. Having a snack at a non designated snack time.
4. Having a water bottle out.
Add on here_____ #tlap
In NW Wisconsin if the temperature was above ten below or the wind chill was above ten below - the students went outside as fresh air and exercise is needed. #tlap
A1: Stop thinking kids can't go outside just because it's cold. C'mon, we all know sickness comes from germs and there are more inside that outside #tlap
A1: Stop
Working in isolation
Being average
Taking a child’s behaviour personally
Awfulizing
Being negative
Letting failure define you
Not letting your why guide you
Giving up #tlap#StopRightNow39
A1 Oh the list is long... homework, grades tied to behavior, grades not tied to a standard, zeros, worksheets, textbooks, negativity, most discipline systems in schools that aren’t restorative #tlap
A1: Stop over designing the classroom. Keep it minimalist. Stop reducing recess time. Stop putting the liberal arts in the backseat #tlap#StopRightNow39
A1 Breaking copies with so many packets, homework that is the same for all Ss and lacks authenticity, give Ss opps to decide how to practice, use class time to be more active, #tlap#StopRightNow39

I feel like I’m doin such a better job since I’ve gotten out of my silo. It is so exciting and rewarding when I connect with others. I do it as often as possible #tlap#StopRightNow39
A1b We need to stop being negative. There are so many issues and challenges in education already; we know them. Let us erase the negative and flood our learning communities with positivity. Keep that smile going, keep the HOPE alive and do the imPOSSIBLE. #tlap#StopRightNow39
A1 stop thinking that students can't do more than . consume in . classes, let them lead, create, take some risks with learning, We can learn so much from them #tlap#StopRightNow39
A1 We need to stop comparing ourselves to each other and just Be REAL. Do YOU! Remember why you got in this profession and OWN it!
Comparison causes so much strife in a school culture! If we all did what we do best, we would CRUSH! Just sayin...
#tlap
A1 This one is a good one. Let us stop finding excuses. It is easy to find reasons why things will not work; this often makes it easy to say no to new challenges. But we need to embrace the yes. Let us try and be willing to make magic happen. Never give up! #tlap#StopRightNow39
A1: Since it’s the end of the semester at my school right now, I’ve been thinking a lot about Stop #21: Reviewing Excessively for Exams and Stop #9...Administering Final Exams #tlap
Becky Simon, Vero Beach, FL #tlap
STOP: ‘shoulding’ in ourselves, trying to people please, meeting the standards needs rather than the students needs, listening to house music (wait that’s a personal deal 🤣), taking shallow breaths, taking EVERY offense #beteachable
A1 Breaking copies with so many packets, homework that is the same for all Ss and lacks authenticity, give Ss opps to decide how to practice, use class time to be more active, #tlap#StopRightNow39
Let's stop thinking about learning through a compliance + completion mindset + start thinking about learning through a mastery mindset. Once a student masters a skill, let's let them move to the next skill. #TLAP
Q1: Stop? A1: Stop filling every moment with content. Start giving time to explore, discover and create. Let Ss lead, ask, problem solve. Less talking morning asking and listening. #TLAP#StopRightNow39
A1: Stop
Working in isolation
Being average
Taking a child’s behaviour personally
Awfulizing
Being negative
Letting failure define you
Not letting your why guide you
Giving up #tlap#StopRightNow39
Working in isolation! Great point!
When did our craft become a solo endeavor? Open the classroom doors for observations! Welcome feedback from peers. Like our students, we are always growing and learning! #TLAP#PLN
A1: we need to stop adding to the plates of others if we are not going to take something off their plate at the same time. #tlap#LeadLAP#StopRightNow39
A2: People tend to be creatures of habit. We do things we know aren't the best because they're familiar. Blah, blah, blah. Can we all just agree that kids deserve more? We all deserve more. #tlap
A2: I continue to say this: Once you know better, you do better - Maya Angelou - Yet many still keep doing thing that are comfortable yet less effective. In order to grow we need to take chances and be better #tlap
A1: Please let’s stop giving worthless homework to our Ss. If it must be sent home create an opportunity to connect with family - Check out #My5thGradeLife by @MrBuetow#tlap
A2 Because it's easy. It's easy to make the same copies year after year, do the same activities, and give the same assessments. Over time, you aren't teaching; it's just muscle memory taking over. #tlap
A1 Fear of mistakes. Many educators forget that doing things wrong is the path to doing them right - even though we tell our students to not fear mistakes all the time. Educators need to have the same bravery we ask our students to have. #tlap
People making the decisions often have no idea how much effort it took to get it all in place and then get backing from those in the trenches. I hear too often from teachers that they aren't investing in it because it will go away next year anyway. #tlap
A2: To truly understand, let’s ask those who in engage in these ways. We may find out there is a culture of mistrust, apathy, or a past experience where they didn’t feel encouraged or supported. Ask first, seek to understand & then work together to change. #tlap#StopRightNow39
A2 We tend to be complacent. It is easy to stay in our old routine, we are comfortable. It is challenging to step out of our comfort zone. We cannot be afraid to be different, to work differently, to shake up the status quo. But always support your people. #tlap#StopRightNow39
A2: Reasons schools don't change:
*it was good for me as a kid
*we've done it this way for years
*to change will cost too much $$
*no time to retrain the teachers or set up the system differently
*can't get everyone on board
The list goes on...
#tlap
Q2: Time. It takes time for ideas to spread and people to learn new ways of doing things. The pressure to get in a huge curriculum tends to produce less than desirable teaching practices. #TLAP
A2: It’s easier and takes less time to do what’s always been done. Trying new things takes time and risks that some aren’t willing to take even when the reward is so major! (Growth mindset is something educators need to learn too!) #TLAP
A1: Stop adding to the toxicity in a negative culture, by feeding the gossip monster. Stop conforming to old practices when innovation is needed. #StopRightNow39#tlap
Q2: Fear of the unknown...Fear of failure...Fear of taking chances and trying something new. Find a reason to jump into something new and have faith that it will work or that you will have learned from it! #tlap#StopRightNow39
A1: Stop giving everything my full attention. There are somethings in school that are more important then memorizing the definition of figurative language. I need to prioritize what deserves the most time and energy and will have the most lasting effects for the Ss. #tlap
A2: Ts often feel overworked and it’s easier to do something that you’ve done before that feels comfortable and “easy” almost. I believe Ts want to do better but find it hard to individually put things on their plate when they feels outside forces doing that to them. #tlap
A2 people are comfortable and getting uncomfortable is a challenge they fear. There is also a factor of thisis what works for me or a lack of vision #TLAP
#tlap I would think of Starting to EMPOWER the students more with their Learning processes ..let them be the VOICE of change they want to see #StudentVoice and STOP hand holding so much that they totally rely on the system and not themselves. They need to build #studentchoice
Because we are comfortable. Some teaching strategies are like a pair of comfy old sweat pants: they feel good, we like wearing them, but they are stained, falling apart and really ought to get a new pair #tlap
A2: Many reasons - that's the way it's always been done; too hard; afraid of pushback & negativity; egos; time needed for change; pressure from 'above'. #tlap
Q2: Fear of the unknown...Fear of failure...Fear of taking chances and trying something new. Find a reason to jump into something new and have faith that it will work or that you will have learned from it! #tlap#StopRightNow39
Fear and time. I think we think we need to be proficient before we begin rather than jumping in and making the change that needs to be made and adjusting as we go. #tlap
A2: I’ve noticed a big gap between PD and implementation. Teachers don’t always know how to make the transfer when PD doesn’t engage teachers. Teachers deserve a voice too. #TLAP
A2: People are often excited to try something new when coming out of a training, conference, etc. When they get back to that room everything piles up on them and it is hard to keep that energy level up...especially when they may be the only ones willing. #tlap
A2 The familiar is comfortable.
Change is applauded if someone else is doing the changing.
The capacity to see things in a different light may not be present. Scaffolding needed.
#TLAP
#TLAP A1 stop thinking every child is going to learn the same material in the same way!! We must continue to have high expectations for all students but that expectation isn’t going to be the same for them all!!
A1: Testing for no reason. Homework, just because. Being afraid to try new things, new approaches. Being competitive to a fault. Assuming. Stereotyping. Looking at students as data only. #TLAP
I probably shouldn't have put full stop on there. Knowledge organizers are great. Some worksheets can be helpful. I guess I'm just railing against throwing low level worksheets at Ss that don't require much critical thinking or don't do any knowledge building. #tlap
A2: I heard this once, and didn’t like it at first, but thought again and found it interesting: “Experience can be the great barrier to progress”. #tlap
A2: Because of habit and simplicity. We do the best we can, with what we are given and where we are at. So when you know better, we should strive to be better. How can we strive to be better? #tlap#StopRightNow39
A1. STOP labeling students, classes and schools. Every student is at once brilliant and desperately in need of improvement. As is every class and school. We are all in the midst of our own journey and that if a group. Labeling will not make the work easier of less complex. #tlap
#truth If Ts don’t know who we are as l#eaders then they will not be able to do the work we need them to do with confidence. #tlap#LeadLAP#StopRightNow39
I think that if teachers are still asking for permission it's because they don't know our core. We can't build capacity if people are always asking for permission. #tlap#StopRightNow39
A2: change is scary, and I imagine that for a district it can seem like an overwhelming task to get Ts, parents, Ss, and the school board all in support of change, especially when stakeholders cling to the idea of “that’s how I was taught” or “that’s not real world” #tlap
A2: Change requires buy in from all parties. Change is hard. Change requires us to hurl outside of our comfort zones. Also change often is expensive. #tlap
A2 Change is hard for two reasons 1) people aren’t afraid of change but fear unsupported change and/or 2) Its work! Lots of work! Hard work! ....but it is immensely WORTHWHILE work that NEEDS to be done ASAP! #tlap
Meetings, yes. Use tech to streamline the lists of things to cover, use meeting time to collab, get to know our students and families #tlap#StopRightNow39
A2: Habit and muscle memory. Think Ts are wonderful and caring people who sometimes takes the safe way out. They have been told by their administrators that they will have your back for trying new things only to be second guessed and put down for being g innovative. #TLAP
A2: Because it's been successful in the past, fear, time etc. However, just because it's worked in the past doesn't mean it's going to work today! We need to meet our students where they are today! #StopRightNow39#TLAP
A2: Change is hard....really hard, but if we support our teachers and students through the hurdles of change we can make our schools an easier place to change. #tlap#teachervoice#pushboundEDU
A2: Because trying new things can be uncomfortable. Being unsure of an outcome can make people fall back to their comfort zone rather than risk the possibility of failure. #tlap
A2: Sometimes to be the change maker you have to be the square peg in a hall of round holes. Standing out can sometimes be scary. That’s why we have to build each other up and encourage risk taking. #tlap
My DH is teaching a brand new to him content area this year. He’s a 14 year veteran. He’s struggling because the way he’s always taught doesn’t work in that subject #tlap
A1 let’s stop pretending he arbitrary dates teachers set on calendars for tests were handed down from on high & realize that formative assessment should determine when students are ready #tlap
A2: Failure to develop a culture that supports, encourages, and yes... even demands change when we know there are better ways. #Culturize#tlap#StopRightNow39
A2 Many educators are stuck in their ways & don't see other possibilities of doing things differently or even reconsidering or renewing what they are doing - it's easy to do what you know whether it works or not #tlap
a2. #tlap Depends on the school and the culture. Often times things are controlled in diff. ways (including the board!) when it comes to teaching/learning. To have a mindset to explore diff. ways to do something, the community first has to acknowledge that change matters.
A2 - some reasons...not saying they are good, but reasons:
Lack of funding
Lack of training
Lack of support
Burn out
Not wanting to buck ‘the system’
#tlap
A2: Fear. Leaders must understand that it isn’t enough to encourage innovation and risk taking. People need to see you cheering on those that have tried and FAILED. Talk is cheap. People are programmed to avoid negative outcomes. Make it safe to try - you can’t just talk. #tlap
Agree. Seeing my children bring home a math sheet with 20 long division problems on it for homework hurts me inside. If a student is doing them wrong you have just created a habit you have to break. #tlap
A1. Just ideas.....
We can stop assigning busy work as homework for students.
We can banish the word search.
We can understand that a vacation from school can mean a vacation from homework as well.
We can stop expecting every child to fit the same mold.
#tlap
A2. We need to change the philososphy of "we always done it this way, and were not going to change it." There's always new and improved ways of doing things! #tlap
A2: Reading Science is one example. We know how we need to teach reading in the lower grades in order to build confident and capable readers. But we aren’t doing this in enough classrooms. https://t.co/R0KfbZAbsG#tlap
A2 there is a comfort in knowing . what to expect, won't worry about changes and pushback as much possibly, sense too many hurdles #tlap#StopRightNow39
A2: Because it’s easy to be average. It’s easy to give up. It’s easy to sit back and do things the way they’ve always been done. We cannot let fear guide our choices to meet the needs of every child, every day. #tlap#StopRightNow39
A2 - Schools often settle for what has always been done. The easiest path. Rather than focussing on shifting a culture towards something that can have a greater impact. #tlap
A2: I think the work we do is incredibly complex. Change is hard because there isn't enough clarity or focus. There needs to be a solid concrete vision in place that keeps us steering in the right direction. #tlap
A2 I also think that many administrators have the same fear of confrontation with angry parents as anyone else does when something goes sideways. In some ways, I get that. We're all human. #tlap
A2: Being comfortable feels familiar, it's easy. However, it's no way to grow as a professional and it needs to #StopRightNow39
After all, we're in the business of learning...#tlap
A2: Instead of being progressive throughout our school years, many times we become complacent with checking off a list. We like to be able to say, "check, got that done" when we should be saying, Boom! Just found a new way to connect with our current generation! #tlap
Sometimes staying the course is the best way ... the change that works for one school may not work for another. ... We have to know when to hold'em and know when to fold'em ... #tlap
A1: We can change the curriculum and even the strategies, but it’s not really change if we don’t also change the beliefs. And that takes time and some courageous, often difficult, conversations. #tlap
A2: a school system at rest tends to stay at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force. Inertia is real! Schools have lots of inertia that needs to be overcome #tlap
A2: The simple answer is "inertia." An object in movement continues forward until stopped. The more we formatively assess, and act intentionally, the more we are likely to change course in response to student need #tlap
A2: I think we need to be careful saying change is hard & scary for educators. I think most educators will embrace change when given the support, resources, guidance & TIME to change! #tlap#StopRightNow39
I am a more outside the box teacher. Last year the instructional coach was called in for me because I didn’t do direct instruction. Needless to say, we parted ways. I started reading #tlap and decided to be true to me
A2 Because, in New Jersey at least, it’s the law. So much energy spent proving what is know and spending time on practices that are not going to solve the problems in education. Rubrics, observations, testing, data collection are not the fixes education needs. #TLAP
#tlap A2 comfort zones....it's difficult to move out of those . We need to be an open minded community and move away from the so called tradition...we need to set the trends
A1 Stop judging Ss based on what other Ts say about them. Kids connect with different types of adults. Don't lose out on a connection! Ss need at least one adult they can trust! #tlap#StopRightNow39
A2 - Do they know there are better ways? Do we all agree on what is better? Is there money involved? Does the central office demand schools implement certain programs because they paid for them?
#tlap
A2: I think we get complacent and fall into traditions that need to be re-examined. There are too many anchors keeping up from moving forward. But we can change that! #StopRightNow39#Tlap
A1 Stop assuming students can’t or won’t. Students are capable and want to do well. We all want learning to be relevant and engaging; it’s a group effort. #tlap
A2 I feel like change in schools takes soooooooo long. I think a reason is in the moment, "this doesn't work", but things move fast and we don't reflect and make changes - then boom we are back in the place doing the same thing. Vicious cycle. #tlap
A2: As a teacher, I know about and suggest replacing some of our dated approaches, but for some reason the support and money are not there. So we proceed...frustrated... #tlap#StopRightNow39
A2: fear of change, fear of the unknown, fear of different work, fear of how kids might respond, fear of losing the illusion of control, fear of failure, fear of the what ifs... #StopRightNow39#tlap#leadlap
A2: Because it’s easy to be average. It’s easy to give up. It’s easy to sit back and do things the way they’ve always been done. We cannot let fear guide our choices to meet the needs of every child, every day. #tlap#StopRightNow39
#TLAP A2 Getting School Board members and superintendents and higher ups to all agree that what they’ve been doing isn’t working is not going to happen. Admitting that change is needed is the first step and then implementation is second!!
I have a sign hanging in my house that says 'If a path has no obstacles, it probably doesn't lead anywhere.' It resonates with me so much. In education we can't take the path of least resistance just because it's there. Our kids deserve more #tlap
There are some ways that just work ... today I conducted class in in a Q&A debate/discussion ... just like Socrates ... kids engaged and thinking. #tlap
A2: Million Dollar Q. In division facing system-wide challenges, it could be fear. It takes a brave group of adults to look past what they fear of change they are feeling today to give students the today and the tomorrow they deserve. #tlap
A3: Important to include all staff in identifying areas needing to be addressed. Include from the start & utilize a process where all staff have a voice. Implement plan, take action & communicate progress throughout. #tlap#StopRightNow39
A3 Ahh now we are at the hard part. I would try to approach this with a solution. It's easy to point out the problems, answers are way more complicated. Then I think the goal should be to demonstrate how the solution will improve things for everyone, not just you. #tlap
A3: One way to build consensus is be a "solution bringer" instead of a "problem identifier". The first sees obstacles that can be overcome, the other sees a brick wall they run into because they didn't feel like changing trajectory. #tlap
Why give students assessments that formative assessments show they aren't ready to take or do? Sometimes we hold time constant when time should be variable based on how much students need based on mastery. #TLAP
In reply to
@WESPrincipal, @MPSbiedermann, @casas_jimmy, @Jeff_Zoul
I agree whole heartedly. If we want things to change in the classroom we need to give them what they need to be successful and time to let them get comfortable. #tlap
A2 Old habits die hard. I think it takes buy-in from everyone in order to make a change. We have to get out of our comfort zones and try out these "better ways" #tlap#StopRightNow39
A2: I could not agree more @casas_jimmy! We have to STOP assuming the worst of others. That is a culture killer! We cannot provide a one and done training and then expect teachers/principals to implement with fidelity. This is the business of teaching AND learning! :) #tlap
A2: I think we need to be careful saying change is hard & scary for educators. I think most educators will embrace change when given the support, resources, guidance & TIME to change! #tlap#StopRightNow39
a3. #tlap Went through this for a huge schoolwide project recently. Consensus is built by starting inclusive dialogs. We made a team of representatives from across the school, highlighted the problems with them, kept them at the forefront and let them lead the next round of talks
A2: I believe we continue to do like Peter Drucker says "doing the wrong things right"? better for kids or easier for us? Common denominator of organizing and teaching vs. learning and innovating #TLAP
A3: 1. Start with leadership team (#PLC or whatever T team as such that you have)
2. Have Ts take back to their teams & discuss/recommend
3. Get board to approve change.
#tlap#StopRightNow39
A2 We discussed this today for an hour (our class). No teacher signed up to give quizzes. That wasn’t the dream. But when a teacher finds resistance (and students resist a departure from the norm and the norm itself), it’s easy to go back to survival mode; to our training. #tlap
A3: building consensus requires educators to understand the why, the target, have some ownership. But above all, it needs to clearly matter to their practice #tlap
A3: Stick with it. Revisit it, clarify, and keep the focus on the why. Don’t jump to “the next thing.” Maintain the focus and the forward thinking. #TLAP
A2: It is common bond of comfort... a tradition mixed with expectation. Rarely do you have to explain what has always been done which is why the world of education is now stopped right in its tracks! Time to question! #tlap#Nan3EDU
A3: Thinking that student behavior should be taken care of with an If/then chart for “consistency.” I think we’re already moving away from it but each issue that arises should be solved with solutions unique to that kid and that incident #TLAP
A3 You need to not only shot why this needs to stop (show the counterproductive effect) and then show the benefits of change. The best way to build consensus...prove it! Show them the benefits & show how culture will change to support. Do things differently. #tlap#StopRightNow39
A3: I bring it up to admin and have those conversations and bring it back to if it supports student learning. We all have to be invested in student growth because after all, it takes a village. #tlap#StopRightNow39
Change is hard when it's imposed by others I think - & this is why leaders need to empower teachers & then provide them with the support, resources, guidance & TIME #tlap
A3: Having data to back up what isn't working and coming into the conversation with a clear plan of action helps. Anyone can complain. Leaders suggest real change. #tlap
Q3: Model the Way! If I want change I need to live it everyday. Also be genuine if you are making change to just make a change staff will see right through it. Last be honest and upfront. “We need to change this because it will make our building better for students” #TLAP
A2: Why don't schools change?
Fear
Resistance
It's always been done this way
Ignorance
Already invested in old ideas
Can't afford new ideas
No time to learn something new
So many excuses not to try, but so many more reasons to try!#tlap
A3: There can be no doubt that we need to ask the right questions and then listen to our teachers and students about what works for them. We have so many experts about education in front of us. Teachers & students are those experts! #TeacherVoice#studentvoice#LetThemSpeak#tlap
A3: Make it your mission to speak the truth to anyone who will listen. Stand your ground and love others through it as they question at first but take a little time to see the light. #tlap#dontgiveup
A3 we talk as a group and brainstorm different ways to attack the problem. Often times we jump in and don’t have a plan completely worked out but we make tweaks and changes along the way. We see things that aren’t working as opportunities to learn and improve #TLAP
A3 - This has to happen through conversation. Through building trusting relationships with staff so that we can forge the path ahead together. Building culture one conversation at a time! #tlap
A2: I’ve noticed a big gap between PD and implementation. Teachers don’t always know how to make the transfer when PD doesn’t engage teachers. Teachers deserve a voice too. #TLAP
Let's continue the conversation from last night, as host @eliza_peterson asked "What can SEAL(Social, Emotional, Artistic Learning) do for Ss' well-being & creativity? Share your thoughts using #SlowK12ArtChat#K12ArtChat@NAEA@TXarted#tlap
Q3:
Gather documentation and examples why there needs to be change. Find other individuals with the same ideas and bring them forward in a meeting or to the principle.
#tlap
A3) What we do should be aligned with our goals, mission, values, and norms. If something runs counter to that, we either need to re-visit out collective commitments, or do away with those things that run against who "we" are. #tlap
A3. Thinking back to when PBIS first arrived on the scene and we were told - you MUST have 80% of the staff with consensus before beginning implementation.
Do you realize how challenging it is to get this rate of consensus?
#TLAP
A3 I’m a bit of a rainbows, unicorns, sunshine and lollipops kinda gal. Let’s put up our sleeves and give it a go! Let’s have enough professionalism and GRIT to show our students what a growth mindset looks like—we need to practice what we preach, so I dig in and work! #tlap
I'm sorry, I call it tweet bombing but I couldn't resist. Kevin Rickard, Virginia Beach A2: Its not in the curriculum, Gotta follow the curriculum. We pressure is on for test results, fall back to comfort zone. #tlap
A3) Lots of people can find fault or point out issues. Justifying the change, and coming up with the alternatives, takes initiative. But beyond simply offering alternatives, building consensus occurs when people work together to create those alternative. Teamwork! #tlap
A3: Bring in people from all aspects of your school. Chances are it will impact EVERYONE, so EVERYONE needs to have a voice in the conversation. When people feel they are part of the process they are more likely to be supporters of the change.
#tlap#StopRightNow39
A3 I started working on our school culture by dressing up, playing music & making signs for the Ss coming into school to bring positivity to the start of their day. I was inspired by @JayBilly2#tlap
A3: It's important to build capacity for the change. Make sure Staff know the WHY. When ppl know their WHY, they are much more willing to make a change! #TLAP#StopRightNow39
The implementation curve is a real thing! We must walk through rock bottom and the mountain top experience before we level out and identify the real data. #tlap
A3: Model the system in your classroom and, if measurable, record data to prove a system needs to stop. Then, promote it throughout discussions/staff meetings/committee meetings/etc. #tlap
A3 make sure that everyone else can identify this issue as well. Gather info, bring it front & center, decide the kids come first, & make a change! #tlap#StopRightNow39
#tlap A3 Succeed at what you do with the Ss. Every thing in education should revolve around what is best for the kids. Role model what you think works and then show that it does. #AlwaysBelieve
A3: Identify the need for change, the why, and alternatives. Build momentum with a few Ss or Ts and let success spread by the positive message that comes from it. Show success through data. Communicate about the positive impact, support often, and celebrate others. #tlap
I wholeheartedly second this. If something goes home it should mean something. It should be creative, and it should be something that CANNOT happen at school. #TLAP
A1: Please let’s stop giving worthless homework to our Ss. If it must be sent home create an opportunity to connect with family - Check out #My5thGradeLife by @MrBuetow#tlap
A2: Sometimes we know there are better ways of doing things and may have a vague notion of how to do it, but we don't have concrete examples of how we can make it work. There's a lot of abstract in education and sometimes we want something concrete to hold onto. #tlap
A3: Start with genuine practice. For instance, I refuse to use Edujargon with my staff, so I don't. And we don't. So much of it goes back to practicing what we preach. #tlap
A3: Recognizing that 100% consensus might not happen and that getting people on board takes time. Start with a crew of people who want to try something and then share how it went with your kids with everyone...prove that it’s a better solution #TLAP
A3: You need to be transparent about why it needs to stop and then build consensus as to why the change would benefit the students and school as a whole. Involve your stakeholders at all levels of the process. #tlap
A3: First and foremost you educate people using research, best practices, and even basic understanding of student needs. No one comes to school to be average, sometimes they just get stuck. We must show them a better way #tlap
Our 3rd six weeks HOUSE WINNER #REVEUR earned 788 points!! They celebrated during lunch @Gene_Pike today and decided on ALTITUDE Trampoline Park as their reward!! Way to go REVEUR!! 🎉🔥 #BetheWildCard#betherevolution#tlap
A3: Identify the need for change, the why, and alternatives. Build momentum with a few Ss or Ts and let success spread by the positive message that comes from it. Show success through data. Communicate about the positive impact, support often, and celebrate others. #tlap
A3: Leading by example is so important. Doing something different and exciting needs a vocal champion. A willingness to share risk taker is important. #TLAP
A: Plant seeds, find folks who are passionate to run with you, and build! Celebrate small successes along the way. Change takes time, learning, multiple exposures & experiences, & encouragement! #tlap
Also, if you have a culture of trust and are ok with failure -When teachers know the why they are willing to try something, as they know they will be supported if they do fail. #tlap
A3: modeling, research, open dialogue that let’s Ts express their fears so that they can be addressed before being forced into something; for things affecting whole community, including Ss and Ps on planning committees w Ts when possible for stakeholder representation #tlap
Q3: I work top down and down up. Find and build relationship with decision makers (district) while finding Ts in bldg. to pilot idea -- present success and ways to implement -- sometimes also include parents :) #TLAP#stoprightnow39
A3: You model the new practice. You provide support. You walk alongside the teachers, administrators, students, and community. Collective capacity is KEY! We have to be in this together! Silos will not work. #tlap
A3: Consider shifting our mindset from wanting to staff to buy-in to wanting staff to invest. Buy-in sounds too much like we are trying to sell something. We don't want compliance, we want sincere investment. #tlap#StopRightNow39
A3. To gather evidence about the problem, surveying, interviewing, etc., , talk to administration, bring in suggestions to alleviate or change the problem. #tlap
A1: Please let’s stop giving worthless homework to our Ss. If it must be sent home create an opportunity to connect with family - Check out #My5thGradeLife by @MrBuetow#tlap
A3 By trying, failing, reflecting, applying and then sharing that experience and the materials. We learn by doing and so does everyone else. But it takes a lot to try something new and it’s easier with someone to rely on for support. #tlap
A3: Encouraging, supporting, and communicating with our colleagues and other professionals to identify areas that need to be discussed. We shouldn't be afraid to bring about and model the change! #TLAP
Bingo...gotta be careful with innovative ways. If it decreases cognition, or thinking with and about the information, it's probably not good innovation. #tlap
A3++ Also, have discussions in a way that offers respect, wisdom and logic. Think before you speak and breathe. Be mindful, use ‘I feel’ statements and learn about the process before you throw the baby out with the bath water #tlap
A3: Demonstrate it to others in your own actions, engage staff in conversation on the topic, start with the why, listen to their perspectives, challenge the status quo for the sake of students. #StopRightNow39#Tlap
A3 I think open & transparent conversation is key to building consensus.
Personally I like using REAL Talk Treasures...especially, Value Individually, Humble Inquiry & Listen to Learn!
We need to "hear" all perspectives and build from there.
https://t.co/G2p8PhiqAd#tlap
A3 You need to bounce your ideas off your people; start with friends, those that are easy to approach - see if it is more than just you, then work with your team or department - grab your admin to discuss further. My rule for myself is to never go in without alt. Solution. #tlap
A3: Consider shifting our mindset from wanting to staff to buy-in to wanting staff to invest. Buy-in sounds too much like we are trying to sell something. We don't want compliance, we want sincere investment. #tlap#StopRightNow39
Q4 Stop #4: Stop Relying On the Same People to Lead...Describe opportunities within your school system that enhance building leadership capacity.
#tlap#StopRightNow39
A3: We have a rule in our building... if you see a problem, suggest a solution. If people are genuinely included in addressing how to change whatever needs changing, I think they generally get on board pretty quickly. “People tend to support what they help to create.” #tlap
Q4 Stop #4: Stop Relying On the Same People to Lead...Describe opportunities within your school system that enhance building leadership capacity.
#tlap#StopRightNow39
A3: I’m going to back up a bit...first there must be a collective effort to discover why something needs to stop. Then, we “shrink the change” by identifying the first steps we will all take together. Example from Switch: get people to choose 2% milk instead of whole milk. #tlap
A3: Moments of change through the voice of a child is a true game changer! When I let them share what works it in turns sends the message of what needs to stop 🛑 I am more than willing to get uncomfortable in a conversation & bring about networking that opens doors! #tlap
I love the inter-weaving, or spiraling affect. They need to practice and review...but make sure you are not leading to over-kill. 4-5 questions should be enough to show that they understand the skill or process of something. #tlap
A3: When you want to stop something that isn't working, it is essential to offer an alternative, complete with a rationale that ties into accepted standards or values. Lay out a clear action plan. #tlap
A3: Consider shifting our mindset from wanting to staff to buy-in to wanting staff to invest. Buy-in sounds too much like we are trying to sell something. We don't want compliance, we want sincere investment. #tlap#StopRightNow39
A3- Building relationships and TRUST, are the first two steps. I’d like to put a stop to Honor Roll, but I’ll have to build trusting relationships first #tlap
And just as an aside, as leaders we must own everything in our world. If folks aren't investing or committing, do we blame them or do we look to ourselves first? Were we clear enough? What other factors are at play? #tlap
This is the crux of the matter, isn't it? The students. When we try to enact change and are coming from a place of "what is best for the students," I think more educators see the merit and join in! #tlap
A3: One way to build consensus is be a "solution bringer" instead of a "problem identifier". The first sees obstacles that can be overcome, the other sees a brick wall they run into because they didn't feel like changing trajectory. #tlap
A3 The decision to STOP needs to be a collective decision as this is how you build consensus - it's about developing shared vision, understandings & principles about moving forward within a community #tlap
A4 All it takes is an idea (a spark, a passion, a curiosity) and the courage to speak up and ask. Everyone is a leader, if we want to see change happen, ask to try something. The support should be there. If you never ask, nothing will happen. Be brave. Be bold. Dream. Do. #tlap
Q4 Stop #4: Stop Relying On the Same People to Lead...Describe opportunities within your school system that enhance building leadership capacity.
#tlap#StopRightNow39
A4: My admin (who is new this year) seeks out advice from teachers and community. It’s sent a message to me that we are all leaders in our building and not one person holds the keys to everything, that ebb and flow is awesome #TLAP
A4: When we rely on the same people to lead, we fail to maximize capacity & run the risk of burning people out & causing division with those who aren’t given a chance to demonstrate their leadership skills/talents. #tlap#StopRightNow39
I would go as far as to say we want staff to dream big, empower them to want to make a difference. Loved the idea of creating a culture of "What If?" #tlap
A3: You need a voice, probably through your dept or PLC, and ideally agreed-upon my many depts, and then you need a consistent message throughout the school. This would bring more teachers and stakeholders on board, and students would then fall in line. #tlap#StopRightNow39
A4 Let people who are experts at something be experts at it and TRUST they will do the best work possible. Just because you are an administrator, doesn't mean you need to lead every initiative, maybe there is a teacher dying to prove themselves, looking for more and capable #tlap
Q4 Stop #4: Stop Relying On the Same People to Lead...Describe opportunities within your school system that enhance building leadership capacity.
#tlap#StopRightNow39

A4: Opportunities w/in my D to build capacity:
*T leaders can be volunteers not just voluntold
*Roles on leadership team & on building teams are rotated so Ts aren't "stuck" w/a role & can see where they may be truly effective.

#tlap#StopRightNow39
A3 Think about what you would need to make a change. For me, I would need to know WHY and be able to see potential results of the change from people that I trust. #tlap#StopRightNow39
A4 We work in teams, have meetings, and meet outside of district- and school-created meetings to do what’s next. I wrote a job proposal for the dream job I want to do part time while still in the classroom. Just try! #tlap
A4 I will often ask for help and delegate duties to others that require them to develop a plan. I will ask for feedback or just strike up a conversation with our staff members and then ask them to run with an idea. #TLAP
A4: I have a "KOC: Keep On Climbing" Committee that meets once a month. Anyone in the building is welcome to attend with their ideas, thoughts, and opinions. We are all capable of leading and coming up with phenomenal ideas to propel us to greater heights. #tlap

A4: creating their own PLNs, leading PD the way a group prefers. When it is an authentic opportunity, leadership grows naturally from unexpected places. This requires trust and respect which is the piece that often is lacking. However, rise above the fray and keep moving. #tlap
A3: You have to explain the WHY and gather as much support as possible. Then stay strong as you move forward. Change is hard. Be patient with those who are not following YET. #tlap
A4: Start small...giving staff opportunities to lead small groups in projects or discussions they are comfortable in and then build from there. As their confidence grows, so will their want to take on more responsibility. #tlap
A4: at our HS, Ts can lead a club. Club days are every other Friday during the school day for 30 minutes. A T started a knitting club this year where a group of Ss learned to knit AND knitted hats to donate to hospitals for babies. #tlap
A3: Identify examples from those who are already practicing the desired outcome and praise their work, provide opportunities for others to observe, and attempt to replicate it. Facilitate meaningful discussions & set manageable goals. #tlap
Q4 - super heart favorite question! Mine folks for the gold in them. Speaking of gold our former custodian used to smelt gold. He talked about it with the kids and they ate it up! Use your resources! Find people’s gifts and give everyone a chance to learn and grow! #tlap
A4) Teachers encouraging each other to go for it. Good leadership should move shift and flex to let teachers create their own PD or leadership opportunities, just as teachers need to shift to allow students' passions lead the learning in the classroom. #tlap
A4 we have department chairs that serve on a team, also other committees that meet, discuss, advise, we have done PD days where Teachers can lead, or go out to PD and come back and share #tlap#StopRightNow39

A1: We should stop assuming that all students can manage time and get specific tasks completed at the same rate. Some students miss out on learning because they give up on (or just copy) the assignment that they know they can’t complete on time. #TLAP#StopRightNow39
A4: Everyone is responsible for leading! 100% leadership opportunities for Ss & a plethora of opportunities for Ts too. We are bldg a new school community this year w/ combination of new grade levels, staff, and Ss. Everyone has something to contribute & MUST for success! #tlap

A4: Our teachers take turns running Faculty Meetings. Watching them facilitate, monitor the time, enforce our norms, and take notes digitally in real time is amazing! We also set the agenda collectively. #tlap
A4: We reach out to all teachers & staff. We pair together so current leaders are paired with future leaders. This develops capacity & allows for traditions to continue & new innovative ideas to take shape. Current leaders move on to new projects and become future leaders. #tlap
A4: Building leadership is a process Voltaire might have called "cultivating our garden." It is slow, and it requires critical conversations and courage #tlap
#tlap A4. Everyone is a leader if they feel the ownership, if they wedded to the common cause ...A leader should not just be in name but ALWAYS must be open to seeking ideas from every source.
A4. Allow multiple people on your team to take on leadership roles. Find out what they like. Sometimes they are afraid to ask you to lead. Allow them to make mistakes as they are part of learning. Support them along the way. People can lead from anywhere in the pack. #tlap
A4: Playing an active role in our PLC (Professional Learning Communities) which allows teachers work together to analyze and improve their classroom practices. #TLAP

A1: I think many teachers need to stop thinking there is only one correct way to teach students. Every student is different and not every methodology of teaching is going to work for every student. If it means you need to create multiple variances of an assignment, so be it #tlap
A4:
Invite veteran teachers and new teachers to build positive relationships in the community. The veteran teachers could give the newer teachers tips on leadership in the classroom and how to enhance it.
#tlap
A4: This is a tough one. Often those who step up become those who admin always depend on doing so. The force of habit can sometimes be a siren song. I believe that knowledge is power. Administrators who know their Ts are able to direct them to leadership opportunities. #TLAP
A4: An opportunity given to me to lead a school wide
#community#collaboration this month in my new school/division made me feel empowered, heard and cared for. As the newbie I came in apprehensive but when given the opportunity to lead I aimed for excellence. #TLAP
A4 On our staff, we have ensured that everyone gets a chance to lead. Subject area coordinators, Mental Health Champion, Learning Coach, Physical Literacy Lead, etc. #tlap
A4 I'm sure there are many unheard ideas out there. We need time to talk to each other rather than meeting where we just listen. More opportunities for communication, more idea flow. If that doesn't happen you need to break out and make it happen. #tlap
A4: STEP ASIDE! Continue to ask questions and allow for a variety of conversation and input. Leaders come in many forms and in education it starts as young as Kindergarten! If we want to nurture leaders we need to make room for the masses! #tlap
Q4 Stop #4: Stop Relying On the Same People to Lead...Describe opportunities within your school system that enhance building leadership capacity.
#tlap#StopRightNow39
A4: Leadership starts with each teacher taking full responsibility for what takes place in our classroom. To the student in front of us, we are the educational system. #tlap
A4: Quit trying to lead all by yourself. Leadership was never meant to be a committee of one. Focus on empowering a community of leaders (including students) by using these four words...I NEED YOUR HELP! #tlap#StopRightNow39
A3: ID what success will look like; Be transparent & define decision making process together; Clear communication strategy-- all along the way ESPECIALLY in implementation/transition. 1 on 1 with naysayers #tlap
A4: EVERYONE has positive strengths to contribute.
A good leader highlights folks’ strengths and invites them to exemplify them in different ways.
(Boy- sounds a lot like what great teachers do for kids) ! #tlap
Q4 Stop #4: Stop Relying On the Same People to Lead...Describe opportunities within your school system that enhance building leadership capacity.
#tlap#StopRightNow39
A4: Traditional leadership roles may cont to go to the same few, so you need to step into a space / hole and fill it. Don't give up. Find ways to lead from where you are. #tlap
A4 I think it is vital to learn more about those we serve.
What are their interests, strengths, desires, dreams, stuff they want to #Cannonballin & try? Then, place them in leadership opportunities where they will thrive. #Tlap
REAL+ #InnovatorsCompasshttps://t.co/lBO36i7AEU
A4: I have a "KOC: Keep On Climbing" Committee that meets once a month. Anyone in the building is welcome to attend with their ideas, thoughts, and opinions. We are all capable of leading and coming up with phenomenal ideas to propel us to greater heights. #tlap
A4: We have to think about how some Ts don't feel always empowered... Our Ts are talented and skilled and they all have their own unique professional passions. We need to give them the platform & opportunity to shine: blogs, edcamp, social media shares, etc. #tlap
A2: The fear of change is powerful. Some people are also very stuck in their own ways, even if their way is continuously not working! Leaving the comfort zone is hard but definitely necessary. #tlap
A4: Pop-Up PD by T; District Podcast created by T; #big3Challenge8 that allows all T to have a voice/share; district leadership academy; School Improvement trainings; AT&L; Ask 4 feedback; T created JOCO EdCamp @MrsJankord; T led PD sessions; Spark Starters thx to @tishrich#tlap
A5: Assumption #1 that has to stopped: As leaders, we have all the answers. Our staff has the answers because they're with the kids. Our job is to assume they know more than we do and then meet them in the middle. #stoprightnow39#tlap
So often we are in a hurry to cover content or get to the next thing. Most important part of school are the connections between people and developing supports and trust that allow an individual to strive for excellence.
@clegleiter#TLAP#LeadLAP#satchat#leadupchat#mschat
Love it! As a veteran teacher - I would have to add that I learn so much from the newbies! It is a two-way street, and both can benefit from enhancing the relationship! #tlap
A4: not within one building, but after my experience gamifying my classroom, in my new role w the other coaches, we gamified PD this year, and all 300 teachers from 8 schools were divided evenly into 4 teams. The mix gave Ts a chance to rise to leadership of their PD team #tlap
A5: None of us are immune from making assumptions. When we are intentional & committed to doing better, we can pause, focus more on asking Q’s to better understand behavior/reaction, & then be empathetic in our response. #tlap#StopRightNow39
A4 My district gives multiple opportunities for leadership opportunities within the building. This past fall I worked with a brand new teacher on our school improvement committee. If a teacher want to lead in CCPS they can. #oneCCPS#tlap
A2: Million Dollar Q. In school divisions facing system-wide challenges, it could be fear. It takes a brave group of adults to look past the fear of change they are feeling today to give students the today & the tomorrow they deserve. #tlap
A5: Good grief, I am the WORST at making assumptions! If we’re making assumptions, it’s typically the wrong ones & we have these fictional stories in our heads about why someone did something. It hurts our relationships in the long run. If we must assume, assume positive. #tlap
A5: Stop assuming the loudest teachers are the best ones. Everyone has a way of delivering their craft. I swear some of my most awe striking teacher friends are the most #zen. #tlap
A5 I suggested today that we write a post about this, comparing an unlikely spot to the classroom, and their approach to the skills we do want our students to master. Are we doing it, @MakeThemMastrIt?! #tlap
A2: It is my observation that some important decisions are made based on who “won’t” be on board and who will complain about change. Usually, it is a loud few who stagnate the change: The Naysayer Dilemma.” #TLAP#StopRightNow39
A4: As a district level person, I purposefully invite Andy and all teachers to join a variety of groups that will capitalize off their interests and strengths while building their capacity to do even more than they imagined. #tlap
Q4 Stop #4: Stop Relying On the Same People to Lead...Describe opportunities within your school system that enhance building leadership capacity.
#tlap#StopRightNow39
A5: We miss the big picture when we let assumptions drive the bus. We miss the chance to find good solutions for our families and our kids when we think we know how it is. #tlap
after two schools where I tried to fit into their ideal, I had to stop assuming I was doing something wrong. Being weird is ok as a teacher. I can smile in August. I don’t have to wait til October. #tlap
A5: To stop assuming negative intentions will lead to a drastically reduced "drama producing" actions and words, leading to a much healthier school culture. To stop assuming a S CAN'T do something leads to greatness that neither you nor the S anticipated! #tlap#StopRightNow39
My district has like 10K teachers ... they try to create opportunities; none really for me ... I found it a bit humorous when they did a Twitter/SM thing and didn't accept my offer to help. Apparently the person with a year experience and a hundred followers was better #tlap
A5: It is being negative about students and believing they are what they are and can never improve. Or I tried this and it doesn’t work kids fault, when in reality it’s the adults fault we need to try more and more until the s’s succeed #tlap
A5. Assumptions blind us both to the potential of students and the wonderful things we are learning about education. We must look toward the future rather than the past. #tlap
A5 - We need to stop making assumptions because it enables poor practice. We need to be intentional with everything that we do. Our job is far to important to not. #tlap
A5 We've been talking about this today in the @voxer book study...I get quite hot and bothered when teachers make assumptions about kids. Just because a student performed or acted one way in the past does not mean they will continue down that path. #tlap
A5-1 One of the best decisions I made was changing my mindset on assumptions and expectations. Its something I work at to just let situations unfold. I know my skills, I know I am a professional, and I know if I work hard I am going to learn something regardless of outcome. #tlap
A5: I will never be perfect - folks never are...but I will be reflective enough to try to catch those assumptions, take ownership, and keep an open mind when I might be wrong. #tlap
A5: I think that trusting those with whom you work with helps to limit making assumptions. Often when someone tries something new there is a bias that you are doing something wrong or that they might be expected to do. Creating a culture of innovation is key. #TLAP
A5: Assumptions are roadblocks on the path to success. Assumptions rise up without care, but must be intentionally removed by allowing our paradigm to be widened. #tlap#StopRightNow39
A5: Ask more questions, assume the best, and be prepared to offer support. We know our Ss and Ts can, so let's not think that they can't or aren't doing something!
#tlap#StopRightNow39
Q4++
Oh! And...
Stop being threatened by others’ success! Be motivated, be happy, be curious, be energized, be teachable, but PLEASE stop being threatened. Y’all I’m preaching to myself, too. But, this very thing can shut down school success big time! #tlap
A5: Assumptions are judgement without jury... they are what breaks a relationship before it ever gets started! Hold yourself accountable and STOP yourself by choice! We got this! 👊💥 #tlap
A5: I kind of feel like this is like an administrator who feels they know what is going on in a classroom after only 1-2 visits. Is it really what is happening all the time or just when they know you are coming? #plannedvisits#dropins#tlap
A5: Assumptions typically lead us to extremes instead of to reality. It has us over or under shoot our targets. If we pause, breathe, reflect, we can hopefully hit the bullseye! #tlap
A5: stop making assumptions about students based on previous year Ts “giving you the dirt” on the Ss you’ve never met; stop making assumptions about other Ts based on their age and years of experience - both old and young #tlap
A5: Stop Making Assumptions looks like: 1) Listening more. 2) Seeking to understand. 3) Stop jumping to conclusions. 4) Remain positive. 5) Believe in each other. #tlap
A5 Assuming that a way a student behaves now is how . they will be in the future, that students are not doing homework or a class task b/c lazy, #tlap#StopRightNow39 .
A5 It is important because making assumptions effects everything we do! We do it unconsciously during the day about behavior, family, motives, etc. We are often WRONG! #tlap
A5 we very easily fall into the trap of making assumptions on what someone or something appears like on the outside. Or we assume based on previous experiences. Ask & hear the whole story first. #tlap
A5: As @AllysonApsey says in #Path2Serendipity - stop assuming other people's behaviour is about you. It usually isn't! Listen to learn. Don't judge - seek to understand. #tlap
I love what @gcouros says in his blog “Starting with Positive Assumptions”. He says “Assume the worst, and you will probably find it whether it is true or not. Start with assuming positive intent, and you are more likely to serve someone in leading to positive action.” #tlap
A5: Drop the filter. One thing that has helped me actually to stop making assumptions about learning, is to actually LISTEN to young people discuss what they are interested in using their own "voice." Sometimes you can hear things framed very differently than you expected. #tlap
A5: Making Assumptions is an easy trap to fall in to. I think it comes down to relationships built on respect and honesty. If we have that we don't need to make assumptions and feel safe to ask the tough questions. Trust is a critical factor to an effective organization. #tlap
A5-2 I stopped being afraid of failure. My expectations and assumptions were in the way of outcomes naturally occurring. Once I let things just happen, the best outcomes happened more often. #tlap
A5: I reread this stop, because it's so important. I don't want to miss something because I assumed the worst... I'm trying to flip this to "presume positive intention" EVERY TIME! #StopRightNow39#TLAP
A5. You can't judge a book by it's cover. Open it up, and read it! Se what it consists of. We need to apply this to changes in our lives, new things learned, meeting people. #tlap
A5: It looks like assuming we know why someone is doing what they are doing or not doing whatever they are not doing. Using @RobinsonViviane open to learning conversations can help us avoid assumptions. #tlap
A5: One of the hardest assumptions to overcome is that quiet people aren’t trying hard or don’t care. Very often, they have the inner peace, wisdom, and sense of self that doesn’t require them to be outspoken. #tlap
A5: Isn’t there something about being an a$$ if you are making assumptions? Find the good intention, give others a chance. What attitude do you want to spread in your school? Attitudes are contagious! #tlap
A5 Making assumptions can lead to disappointment. Example, we often make the assumption that people will understand natural consequences when they don’t. #tlap
A5) I guess it's still assuming, but I try to presume positive intentions when working work staff. I know they care and want to do the best they can. It helps to approach things when I assume everyone is trying to do their best for kids. #tlap
A5 I don't like hearing that students can't do something, and then are not given an opportunity, all students deserve the opp to try, #tlap#StopRightNow39
A5 Assumptions can hurt our progress. We will often find excuses in assumptions. We need to have an open mind. We want to be willing to learn and create together. Do not have a preconceived notion of what things should be; grow together. #tlap#StopRightNow39
A3: I feel like it's best to practice what you preach! Start adopting the new model and putting it into practice so you can show the good in change. Asking for colleague support is always a good idea to get back up and work together to implement change all across the board #tlap
A5: One of the hardest assumptions to overcome is that quiet people aren’t trying hard or don’t care. Very often, they have the inner peace, wisdom, and sense of self that doesn’t require them to be outspoken. #tlap
Thanks! It is my first year as principal, but I feel that it gives all of our staff "leadership" in the building. I want to create a collaborative culture. #tlap

A5 One of my dearest mentors--my Multiplier, Dr. Devin, once advised me to "Stop assuming everyone performs at your level, Tara. Your level of performance is not the standard. Far from it."
I LOVE that woman! We can't assume everyone performs at our individual level. #tlap
A5: Stop assuming you know what it’s like to have/be in another’s shoes/classroom/family/background/experiences/lifestyle...
You don’t. Ask & listen to learn.
#tlap
A5: Stop assuming that everyone should teach the same way. Making grade levels' and teachers' lessons look the same leads to stagnant and uninspired students. #TLAP
A5: Not making assumptions sounds like "Can you help me understand..." We need to be open to a worldview bigger than our own. Other people have things to teach us as long as we're not too proud to listen #tlap
A5 I think this is one of the hardest things to “stop” b/c assumptions are usually predicated on previous behaviors. I don’t make assumptions with Ss but, being honest, do struggle sometimes w/ them based others on behavior. Be open minded & taking things at face value #tlap
Q6 Another stop we discuss in the book is to Stop Saying, “That’s the way we have always done it.” What are some other phrases we should stop SAYING in schools? #tlap#StopRightNow39
A5 we have to stop assuming that all of our students have the same support when they leave us at 3pm. I stay after 4 days a week to tutor to make sure my kids "get" what I'm teaching. #tlap#StopRightNow39
A5) realistically you cant stop making assumptions_the real trick is actually recognising the assumptions you are making so that you can change your thinking & then your actions #tlap
A3: Starting with a small group that is willing to take risks and support each other is helpful in building credibility and buy-in for change. #TLAP#StopRightNow39
Q6 Another stop we discuss in the book is to Stop Saying, “That’s the way we have always done it.” What are some other phrases we should stop SAYING in schools? #tlap#StopRightNow39
A5: Stop assuming failure is a negative term. Developing a growth mindset that everyone can achieve, you can learn through resilience. Some of our best learning comes through our failures and challenges. Ask questions, think critically and show some grit. #tlap
A5: Assumptions can change our expectations of our students. We set ceilings we think they can reach and sometimes it falls short of their true potential. #tlap
A5: Instead of making assumptions, we should begin to ask questions to discover and learn to be better. We should stop assuming we are not good enough, be happy with your progress! #TLAP
Q6 Another stop we discuss in the book is to Stop Saying, “That’s the way we have always done it.” What are some other phrases we should stop SAYING in schools? #tlap#StopRightNow39
A5 Loved this chapter in the book. We have to stop jumping to conclusions and assumptions never solve problems. It implies that people can’t change or situations can’t change and that dog just won’t hunt. #TLAP
A5) Assumptions are you, projecting outward. Assumptions are exactly the opposite of active listening and learning from others and letting their voices be heard. #tlap
Q6 Another stop we discuss in the book is to Stop Saying, “That’s the way we have always done it.” What are some other phrases we should stop SAYING in schools? #tlap#StopRightNow39
#tlap#stoprightnow39 We need to stop assuming that:
We are the only ones that know how to teach our subject.
We are the only ones that care about what we are doing.
We are the only ones that care about our students.
When assumptions stop, better relationships start!
Q6 Another stop we discuss in the book is to Stop Saying, “That’s the way we have always done it.” What are some other phrases we should stop SAYING in schools? #tlap#StopRightNow39
A6: One word I have been learning to stop saying so much is "Yes." I want other people to feel empowered at school, and if I am always saying yes, they never get their moments to shine (especially when they can do it waaaaaay better than me!) #tlap
A6: Besides "that's the way we've always done it" we should stop saying:
*It's impossible
*It works, why fix it?
*Our scores are good
*We don't have the money to fix it.
*The board won't approve.
#tlap#StopRightNow39
Q6 Another stop we discuss in the book is to Stop Saying, “That’s the way we have always done it.” What are some other phrases we should stop SAYING in schools? #tlap#StopRightNow39
A6 Stop saying:
- Our kids can't do it.
- This is too difficult.
- Parents won't like it or support it.
- I can't do this.
- It worked when I was a student.
- Learning should not be fun.
- Learning to write = writing an essay.
- Change won't happen.

A5: Stop assuming the worst in Ss, Parents, Ts... Have a positive presupposition about everyone so we can move forward together. Research shows our level of belief in Ss has one of the largest effect sizes in academic achievement. I’m thinking same might be true for Ts. #tlap
A6 “They are just doing that to get under my skin” or just insistent on it’s a “rule”. Does the rule make sense? Does the rule apply here? What’s the best in this moment? Best for Ss? Go with that. #tlap

A5: This reminds me of the 5 Dysfunctions of a Team (book). The first is absence of trust and I believe this often comes from assumptions. Usually a simple conversation can lead to a completely different perspective #Tlap
or even higher that that_because I work in a cluster of small schools I hear "the education dept don"t like that" but it's never backed up with evidence #tlap stop the blockers!!
Q6 Another stop we discuss in the book is to Stop Saying, “That’s the way we have always done it.” What are some other phrases we should stop SAYING in schools? #tlap#StopRightNow39
A6 Society doesn’t have the same cliche. The world is changing. Today a student told me, “It’s as though school wants to mold the student to the school, but the school isn’t molding to the current society.” I didn’t have much more of a response than, “I hear you.” #tlap
A6: STOP sharing negative viewpoints PERIOD! It creates a toxic environment that eliminates a culture of goodness for every child! Some times in life we need to SIT ON ONLIR THOUGHTS! At least that’s what I think 🤔 #tlap
#tlap A5. Not making assumptions will be the ideal way, is it possible? I'd like to stop it, but one reacts based on past experience & information gained over a certain amount of time, of observing and absorbing the environment...it'll be fantastic to have that detached approach
A6: In my experience ... Experience can be a powerful lesson, but it can also lead you to become stagnate and not open to trying new things. We ask kids to try new things everyday. Maybe the world of ed. would be better if educators were asked to be innovators everyday.#TLAP
Stop saying "It's all about the students." It's about the entire learning community, which includes the people serving the students directly: the teachers. #tlap
A6: "Kids aren't the same anymore." The same as what? And do we really want cookie - cutter kids? "If it's working, why should we change it?" Because Ss are bored to tears. Because we're sucking the love of learning out of their souls. #tlap
“The students learned that last year.” I can’t even remember where I put my keys half the time and that’s *important* to me. What we are teaching isn’t always important to the kids at the moment. So give them another chance to learn it! #tlap
Right on! Stop distrusting students, stop dishonoring their literacies, stop not giving them feedback they need to grow + stop creating environments that are free of their voices + their choices. In short: stop treating students as abstractions + start humanizing school . #TLAP
Q6 Another stop we discuss in the book is to Stop Saying, “That’s the way we have always done it.” What are some other phrases we should stop SAYING in schools? #tlap#StopRightNow39
A5: Don't assume that a student will cause problems in class just because a teacher who the student previously had is telling you to watch out. Form your own idea about the student after you've gotten the chance to personally get to know them, you may be surprised! #tlap
A6: "What if I make a mistake?" Good! It means you are taking a risk...trying something new....pushing your learning. Don't be afraid of mistakes. Be afraid that you aren't willing to try..... #tlap
A6 stop saying "Great... just one more thing" or "I don't get paid enough for this" or "Thank God it's Friday" stop making the Ss feel like they are a burden. #tlap#StopRightNow39
Q6 Another stop we discuss in the book is to Stop Saying, “That’s the way we have always done it.” What are some other phrases we should stop SAYING in schools? #tlap#StopRightNow39
A6: We need to give up our language re: “perfect”. No child needs us to be perfect. What matters? Does my teacher “light up” for me when I enter a room? I ❤️ this @JodyCarrington ”Perfect has nothing on truly, completely, wide eyed, open souled lit up” THIS is perfection #tlap

A5: Not making assumptions looks like people genuinely listening to each other to learn from each other and then asking clarifying questions before responding blindly. #TLAP#StopRightNow39
A5 stop making assumptions about kids. Every kid deserves a fresh start not only every year, but everyday. Can’t wait to start really working with kids tomorrow. #tlap#freshstartTuesday
#tlap A6. I often hear..." We can't change the way Ss think or work ,it comes from home" that anboys me no end. I believe I can bring about the change, through the personal connection I will establish, but I have to TRY ...and more importantly I have to STOP thinking negatively
A6 "I cannot wait until break" "How many days until the next break?" Not all students are happy about breaks, reading books and learning from PLN, I recognize this now, although never really counted down, always sad when school year breaks for summer #tlap#StopRightNow39
A6: Other things to stop saying: I'm was afraid you wouldn't like it, What are the rules? We should also eliminate any negative discussion about students from previous year teachers #tlap
A6: How was school today?; He/she/ I am not a math/ english/ Physical ed student/person. ; _______ is so smart; ANY of the buzzword bingo or "edubabble"; https://t.co/qCaF6bQfnF#tlap
A6: We don't have the resources for that.
That's not my job.
His/her parents just don't care.
They/he/she can't do that.
We don't have the time.
We aren't structured that way.
#tlap
A6: "It's good enough." Why do something if you aren't going to put in 100% effort? The students deserve more than that. It shouldn't just be good, it should be great! Do what you can to take things to the next level and better than just "good enough" #tlap
A5: It’s like thinking you know history v. researching the details. I’ve had many assumptions that were corrected by a closer look. Same with students...it’s easy to assume we know what’s going on, but just one heart-to-heart can be a real eye-opener! #tlap#StopRightNow39
Calling all SCIENCE PIRATES, I know we have so many amazing Edu Twitter chats, but if you are a pirate that happens to be a science teacher (or any teacher) join the Sci-Pirates every Wed night 8CST! #tlap#scitlap
A6. I also find it nauseating when educators want different opportunities or levels of empathy for their own children than they offer to the students with whom they work. Just horrific!!!! #tlap
#tlap A6 I often hear..." We can't change the way Ss think or work ,it comes from home" that annoys me no end. I believe I can bring about the change, through the personal connection I will establish, but I have to TRY ...and more importantly I have to STOP thinking negatively
A6: We should stop saying, “My classroom, my rules.” Involving students in creating the class environment makes them feel valued and empowers them to become more independent. #TLAP#StopRightNow39

What an amazing #tlap Twitter Chat tonight w Jimmy Casas and Jeff Zoul talking about their new awesome book STOP RIGHT NOW! I loved it. I have interviewed both on my Wired Educator Podcast. Most recently Jeff about #StopRightNow39https://t.co/9UgPcMvq04@casas_jimmy@Jeff_Zoul
A7: I will commit to stop comparing my success to my peers/other professionals. We all have our strengths and talents we bring to the classroom/different situations that make us who we are! #TLAP
A7 This year I decided to stop fearing how a tweet, or something I say on @OnEducationPod might be taken and could lose me downloads or followers. I am committed to being authentic. Doesn't mean I am unprofessional, just true to myself. 2019 is going to be awesome. #tlap
#tlap Thank you for the conversation! My eyes are unable to stay open any longer w/out toothpicks. If you have a minute, please read the pinned tweet on my profile and see if you can help keep my daughter in college.
A7 I will stop saying I have no time. The thing is I do...I just need to reprioritize.
My kids are worth it. I am worth it. My school community is worth it.
I am beginning with a reflection with my school leadership team tomorrow. Let us move forward from there! #tlap
A7: I will work to empower more teachers to see themselves for the leaders that I see in them...meaning, I will not rely on the teachers that I know will always step up. I will commit to build capacity in more of my teachers! #tlap#StopRightNow39
A6: *Controversy alert* we should stop saying “do what’s best for kids“. This gets thrown around so much, and I think, while well intended, it oversimplifies our extremely complex work. I’ve always found it patronizing because it sounds like there is never gray area. #tlap
A7: This week, I am going to stop trying to do everything on my own. It is the hardest thing for me to let go of control and ask for help (in all areas of my life). #TLAP#StopRightNow39
A7: Actually, I'm going to start stopping. A friend told me I need to slow down or I'll burn out. It's not easy for me, but she's right. Sometimes we have to just stop. For a second. #stoprightnow39#tlap
Hey #StopRightNow39#TLAP peeps. If you want to continue to grow your PLN, and learn from amazing educators, hop on #MEMSPAchat this Thursday!
It'll be worth your time! @MEMSPA
Say it isn't so! Can we really be nearing the end of an hour on #TLAP. This chat is lit!! So great to connect with & hear from so many passionate educators. #StopRightNow39
A7 - So many things to consider....
- Assuming the worst of people
- Asking staff to do meaningless, busy work
- focussing on programs to solve student achievement concerns
***People need to feel cared about personally before they will give 100% professionally.

A6 YES! I wrote this 3 years ago & it still holds true. Forego the traditional, "What I did on my (insert holiday) vacation" essay. Trust me, many Ss would rather be with us.

(Feel free to share w/ colleagues or distribute before the next break!) #tlap
A7 I'm committed to stop forgetting to call parents about the great things their kids are doing! Too often those kids fall under the radar bc I'm too busy with the "not so on task" kids. #tlap#StopRightNow39
A7: I will stop worrying about following the program. I know I am doing what is best for my kids because they don't want to leave at the end of the day, they come in early, and want to continue learning at lunch. #tlap
A7: This year I have vowed to embrace each situation that presents itself. Definitely a powerful year a learning and growing with fabulous educators when you choose your lens! #tlap
A7: I will commit to stop pressuring myself to be perfect. We give those around us Grace all the time. Sometimes we need to give ourselves the same grace we give others.#TLAP
as usual, I stumbled onto this #tlap twitter chat randomly_where can I find out your schedule??? I need to plan time zones from Australia & I always love that you all make me think so much :)
A7 I will stop asking Ss what they want to be when they grow up and instead ask what problem they want to solve or what issues s-i they want to address #tlap#StopRightNow39
A5: Stop assuming that kids getting off track, falling asleep in your lesson, or talking is always the students' fault. Sometimes your lesson is just boring (I've been guilty of this just as much as anyone else). #tlap
Listen to your friend. I had a small stroke before Christmas break. I was forced to stop. Don’t burn out and don’t kill your self. Had to put my PhD plans on hold #TLAP
Im calling out Black Lives Leader @shaunking ( He blocked me) & @TheRevAl Sharpton

Thank you so much @Jeff_Zoul and @casas_jimmy for the amazing chat tonight. This was an amazing and energizing chat!
Thank you @burgessdave for supporting so many educators and allowing many to share their passion, vision and experience.
Have an amazing week! #tlap
A7: This week I’m going to stop silently agreeing! Silence is a form of agreement so I want to be able to share in an uncomfortable conversation for the betterment of children if it comes my way. #tlap#StopRightNow39#Nan3EDU
A6: For anyone over the whole “kids these days...” comments, you’ll have to check out @JodyCarrington book coming out in February called exactly that! #kidsthesedays I hear a certain #StopRightNow39 author has a little something, something with the forward in the book... 😉 #TLAP
So grateful for the opportunity to host #TLAP tonight w/my good friend & partner @Jeff_Zoul Thank you @burgessdave for your continued support of #StopRightNow39 but more importantly, for your genuine friendship. #blessed
There's just so much complexity. Every time I think I feel very strongly about something, there are some exceptions. I think @dylanwiliam wrote: "Everything works somewhere. Nothing works everywhere." And he's so right. I gotta reject overly simple answers sometimes! #tlap
A7: Gah! I had a feeling the whole chat that this would be the last question and I still wasn’t prepared! 😳 I’m going to say I’m going to STOP putting myself down. I am going to STOP undervaluing what I do. I am going to STOP letting fear drive me. #TLAP#StopRightNow39
Thanks, Jove. It's an uncomfortable position, and I explain to Ss that it is not professional for me to allow it, condone it, or participate in it. (Because Ss can be spot on w/their assessment of staff sometimes!) #tlap
LOVE it. I also like "who" (as in your character, no another person) do you want to be when you grow up? That one word change helps them focus on character traits and the kind of person they want to be.
#tlap
A7: I’m shaking in my boots terrified, but I’m not putting up with accepting practices because it’s what’s always been done. I’m questioning and I’m sure I’m inviting murmurs, but I will lay my head down w dignity at night. #tlap#StopRightNow39

Thank you for a great #tlap conversation tonight. You stimulated great thinking and reflection and followed up by asking for commitments! That’s my kind of chat! 😊
