A0 Martin Joyce 8th grade math and 6 & 7/8 support. One class is behind others due to a recent false bomb threat
Lemarr Treadwell, Fresno, CA. Parent Conferencing.
ugh, that's a major downer. And totally screws up the flow of whatever schedule you had.
urbie, learning experience designer [parent/grandparent].. working on my PhD [on hold] is hard.
thanks for dropping in, Lemarr. Yes, parent conferences can be... challenging.
A0 Malyssa McCubbin 7th grade teacher sometimes my classcraft management game doesn't work! I have to use the app
A0 - Summer, 8th science, sub ignored detailed plan and we lost a day.
thanks for dropping in, Urbie. I'm sure the PhD can be overwhelming, but I'm glad you're here :)
Kirstin from Orange County, CA, 4th grade teacher. Crazy hair day!
Scott, science T and TOSA at K-8 in Sacramento. Set-back. Not much science support.
A0: Georgina, 1st grade. Waiting on playground for Playworks Supervisor, the schedule changed and we weren't informed
A0: Christyn 3rd grade teacher writing assignment went wrong students struggling
what about crazy hair day?! Thanks for dropping in this evening.
Ben Kroeze, education student working on majoring in special education, homework and here to learn
A0: Kevin, 6th grade. My is just not panning out the way I’d planned. Hmph.
Whether it's the intense games or Halloween prep, it's a light this evening. Totally fine, so let's roll into the questions.
Q1: Whoops!
You have something paced out for Tuesday, but realize that students will be on a Halloween crash. How do you adjust?
Hey ! Amanda, elem math/tech TOSA in Campbell. Last time's things didn't go my way were last wk when I bombed a demo lesson 😐
Kim, MS STEM T from Fresno, custodian unplugging carts to clean but not plugging back in
A0 Daniel, Math tutor/ working on becoming a math educator. Hdmi cable "walked away" from the room
Hi, !
A0: I am not supporting students as well as I would like in third college search/process. :(
oh no, Amanda! Hopefully the teacher and students were supportive. You'll bounce back :)
A1: keep it fun, lots of hands on activities. Plus it's early dismissal
A1 sounds like time for make up late work or cleaning out work folders with maybe some homework help as well!
A1. Uhhhh...change it up? As a wise person must have said, "she who is not flexible in teaching will perish"
A1: take a deep breath and do what we can or drop everything and dance.
A1: time for a green screen lesson on the fly, have some fun
A1: We are lucky to have no S day 11/1. I would take one thing out of the plan for the day...take your time with other lessons
A1 Slow day where students decide to get late/missing work done, those who want to go ahead can.
A1: Don’t force it. Everyone will be worse for the wear. Try something novel.
Leila here jumping in late was rehearsing and lost track of time
Definitely! The T, lit TOSA & I decided 2partner to develop strategies for better supporting Ss next time!
lucky, we've tried to talk the district into this but no such luck yet.
A1 - 3rd year teacher says try anyway with extra supports or more breaks thrown in. Experienced teachers say...what?
nah, I love days after/before a holiday. We can still do so much with the content as long as we recognize the distractions.
I always tried finding ways to bring in the content of the holiday to make it meaningful and not a waste.
.
Q2: You just found out there will be an assembly this Thursday at 9:00. You had a full day planned, so what do you alter?
.
A2a: MS T, 9:00 is my prep, so no biggie :-)
oh stop cheating :)
Fine, for you, it's 10:00.
A1 Offer Ss water and lots of intermittent energizers. Oh, and make the lesson engaging, maybe more than usual! No candy in class
A2. "Housekeeping" activities go first.
A2: No biggie - take out review items and reduce core subjects.
A2 This goes back to flexibility, being flexible is such an important trait as an educator
A2 Alter the timing of the lesson maybe cut it and chunk it around the assembly then catch up later
A2: Be thoughtful about math choices. What is core to the concept. Focus and reduce.
A2:Whatever the Ss are the most proficient at or...?
Hi! Jo-Ann here. Joining while working on my last minute details to my costume. Going to be a STEAM Scientist!
A2. These ?s make me sad for most schools. I am lucky to be able to design/implement my curriculum at a pace I deem reasonable.
As you think about Q2, what do the responses say about what is necessary? Something to ponder...
A2 - My poor 9am class gets videos to watch in additon to their homework. I can't handle out of sync classes!
A2: I roll with it! Guided reading is at 9:00 so I flip it to after the assembly b/c 6 year olds have to read everyday
A2b: the other periods wind up getting a "bonus" lesson, usually extension type and activity
I think "roll with it" is basically my motto in teaching!
A2:Whatever the Ss are the most proficient at or...?
A3 Provide an alternate online activity for students, alter the next days removing book keeping for Q&A's
yes!!! I need my classes to be in sync or it drives me insane
yes, it shows the Ss how to respond. Stressed out, angry, frustrated, or flexible. We choose flexible.
A2 With PBL, it is easy to adjust to last minute changes with the schedule.
A1:Knowing Ss might be pumped about an event or holiday, I tried to build that into lessons somehow
A2 This one really depends on the grade level you're at. I only get my kids 50 min a day.
A2 Provide an alternate online activity for students, alter the next days removing book keeping for Q&A's
..
Q3: Before class, a student shares that she’s being bullied by classmates. How can you turn this into a teachable moment?
..
A3 We have been practicing Restorative Circles. This type of "pop up" situation may call for a circle. It's worth taking the time
A2: It's always good to have a backup activity in stock, just for those days where minutes get swiped from your schedule.
re:A2...do you offer the assembly class the same activity later or they just don't get it?
Hi! I'm Krista, a 4th grade teacher. The morning tutor used my room for a paint sesson, I had to teach outside bc of fumes.
I'm interested, Jo-Ann. Can you say more about this?
Yes, I can Google it, but your perspective is better :)
A1:
1️⃣Change the pace
2️⃣switch around subjects
Keep Ss alert.
3️⃣📝assignment RE: Halloween👽
Make it 👻a .
A3: adjust lesson to increase group activity, maybe gear towards bullied Ss strengths so other Ss see their value
A1: Aren't kids always crashing from something? I'd do a warmup that lets them share/chat/move, then get to the fascinating lesson
A3: A perfect opportunity to use a restorative justice circle teach kids empathy, problem solving, empower THEM to develop culture
A2:Lucky as elem T to have some flexibility. I'd keep my best lessons that day or ask for Ss for their opinions
This is ENORMOUS. Totally agree, Kim. https://t.co/86Px1ZRqDG
A3: adjust lesson to increase group activity, maybe gear towards bullied Ss strengths so other Ss see their value
A3...oooo, tricky. In MS privacy is key so this is a 1:1 moment & send to counselor scenario. With followup emails.
depends on activity, they may get it later or as an optional one to do at home or unfortunately not at all
A2: Your schedule on Thursday.
That's a Consultant Question.
So I'm not telling.
A3. If this is the first time, "Bring students together and discuss bullying" warn students about next steps
A3: As the teacher, it means that I need to reflect on the culture in my classroom. What can I be doing differently?
It is building a community of understanding through empathy. Conv allows all voices to be heard.
A3: Whatever happens, it is always dealt with. Always. Whether teachable moment for one ss or many.
A3 Come up with a sign with the student to do it they get bullied in class, get small groups to discuss problems and teamwork.
A1 So Ss are in crashed mode, eh? it or something else game-like that encourages much merriment.
Questions are designed to start easy to answer to more challenging to resolve issues. Usually 3 questions.
If she wants to deal with it right then...Circles often work only when there has been pre-work w/both parties...
Surprise assemblies happen all the time! I just roll the lessons over to the next day. Its all you can do.
Agreed. I'd go w/the flow of the Ss mood. 🙃👻 Its so unfair to add more work or punish them for

Q4: Oh no!
The power just went out, 30 minutes into the school day. Without losing your cool, what’s the new plan?
---
A4 Great time to take the learning outside!
A3 Ensure privacy of Ss. Offer example from T life. Offer safe advise for kids to report and cope. Show both support and disgust
A4: happened last year, its Science, we go outside!
A4: used a power outage to bring students' cell phones out for the flashlights and finish their activity.
A4--my first thought was ooooFUN! Time for an on-the fly lesson on electricity and the power grid.
A4. Weather permitting, outside we go, with things to study in pairs or groups.
A4: Call THE D.O. Sorry I couldn't resist 😉. Go outside. So much to do in the outdoor classroom
A4 Maybe the best day ever! Teaching unplugged can be the most rewarding sometimes :) (Though I do love tech)
I was going to say the same thing! I’m lucky to have a beautiful outdoor setting to work with. https://t.co/WD8vZzmPzU
A4 Great time to take the learning outside!
A4: Go outside!
Make a meaningful experience out of a bummer situation.
A4 students get to work on their chromebooks because their batteries are fully charged while we wait for power
A4: also a great day to bring out the Brown Bag STEM activities that I keep "ready to go" at all times
that would be awesome! Do you have something prepped for that or just roll with it?
A3 - I do a lot of classbuilding, and if there is bullying going on then I do even more!
A4: go outside or keep working. My Ss prefer working with the lights out.
True. S can choose to participate or not. Our class mtgs=voluntary share from anyone & chance to reteach behavior
A4: ... Lets go outside and read... https://t.co/VMzY6rQWaq

A4: lol happened last week. Students put things away and I sat them on the floor and read to them. Best day ever!
Mine too. I finally have nice windows, and it's just more relaxing.
Q4+
What if your lesson was based on your projector or an electronic setup?
A4 Of course, no power means no wifi. Unplug!
, fun times at ! Looking forward to presenting at & hosting 2 leadership summits at &

yes, the lights are harsh on our eyes. Natural light is so much better.
Just roll baby. Electricity is NOT in the science curriculum anymore, but I think it's awesome.
A2 Resist homework urge.. and serve plan up as pie. Slice activities so Ss work collaboratively. Scream for ice cream & celebrate.
A4 Open the blinds and let light in. Students will get to use phones to see the graphs they need and work on whiteboards.
it's kind of a big deal, or so we hear :)
A4b change the lesson to paper or a different digital assignment
A4: Change to a

Q5: A group of your students received a prestigious award over the weekend. How might you celebrate their success in class?
.

A3 Ensure privacy of Ss. Offer example from T life. Offer safe advise for kids to report and cope. Show both support and disgust
A3a bullying as a learning experience.. ask Ss to work alone & start with empathy, sticky-note feelings & frame prob.
A5 class aeard of merits & classcraft points plus show off the award with praise for students
A5: Sharing “highs” from the weekend is a regular occurrence. Celebrate everyone. Relationships matter.
A4+ as I tell my students when our tech goes down - "It's time to go old school"
A5. Create badges for the group with a jibjab video.
A5: have them come up and explain what it is and how they got it, let Ss ask them Qs. celebrating all achievements is important
Nothing. Kids will be kids. TeachableMoments.
It's not you
it's THEM
A5 Congratulate them on the good work at the end of role call. Let them share what they got if they want.
Classcraft is a management game students have avatars and gain rpg game style points to level up their character
EXACTLY. The last thing a girl would want is more focused attention on her being bullied.
A5 Make sure not to make others feel bad. However, a group shot for social media could be awesome Let sch… https://t.co/2xMy5JoWrI
.
Q5: A group of your students received a prestigious award over the weekend. How might you celebrate their success in class?
.
A5: has students share something great at the beginning of class on a regular basis. Things like this would be perfect.
how are you using the badging system in your class/school?
A1: Ask Ss to bring their candy to School + do a sorting activity
or Graph Ss Candy types K-4 😬🍎EduConsulting
A3b Post the stickies where everyone can see ‘em. Ask Ss if bullying brought out similar feelings? Ask Ss what to do next.
A5 - We do Good News every day...its something I got from Capturing Kids Hearts. So we'd celebrate by clapping.
A4 Paper coding. We're doing it this week in to train for VR collaboration. We don't need no electricity.
A5: I had a "Student Success" space on a side wall. Students posted flyers for their band performances, awards ceremonies, etc.
A4 Break out the Global Thermos Unclear Ware materials.
A5 Do you mean red or white wine?
A5: We'd each share accomplishments in circle... https://t.co/c4zhBgd4yT

A4 Break out the Global Thermos Unclear Ware materials.
Such a great idea! Wish I'd been better about doing these sorts of things

Q6: Your team is planning a common assessment this week, but you know that your students aren’t ready. What do you do?
..
A5 have the students tell their classmates about it and celebrate
Q4+: They could always jigsaw the lesson or play a game based on the information... https://t.co/wDl5wAPprC
Q4+
What if your lesson was based on your projector or an electronic setup?
A6 My team is cool, so I'd put it off until Ss were ready, or I'd give it twice, once now and once later to show them their growth
A4 Being an awesome teacher the slides were bullets of the “hot parts”. Continue story whilst Ss sketchnote what they’re hearing.
A5: 🔔Announcement 🙊
And an opportunity to share their experiences w/Class. Give the Ss guidelines so they know WHAT to share.
A6 push the assessment back and do some review or catch up to get them ready oh well if we're a bit behind!
A6 Try to push it to later in the week, but never sacrifice student comprehension and understanding for a test.
A5 Prestigious for whom? First thought is how award figures into the lives of everyone in the class. Celebrate that culture.
A5: What is the 🏆for?
What did you do to win the Award?
How many other Contestants were there? How long did it take to prep?
A6: talk to my team and see if the assessment can be moved. Ask for help on how to reteach my students
A6: This... actually happened. Two weeks ago with
Gave it anyway. Didn't count 5 questions.
A6 retakes after i feel they are prepared.
A6: schedule should be flexible, or test could flex as well, whatever works for the group.
A6 If it still a 'go': Teach your butt off. If its not, get some extra days https://t.co/kmRTn63RHj
..
Q6: Your team is planning a common assessment this week, but you know that your students aren’t ready. What do you do?
..
"Mobile Thermos Unclear Ware".. it's a rule-less game, something that popped into my head +
A6 Maybe adjust the assessment questions or change up the schedule. Ask yourself what is the purpose? Mastery or grades?
yikes, that's a tough one. How do you plan to handle it the next time something like this comes up?
A6: Give Ss a study guide + take 5min out of each other subject to prep Ss.
A1: Either get them up and moving or give them opportunities to talk... I'm thinking tons of pair share... https://t.co/sTnyQqOgjd
Q1: Whoops!
You have something paced out for Tuesday, but realize that students will be on a Halloween crash. How do you adjust?
Mobile: get Ss moving (stay warm/cool), Thermos: be safe, Unclear: Ss/t come up w/something together+
I like that. Lowest Common Denominator of time, then roll with it.
I like the once now and once after approach. At least all of the team members get to administer the assessment
.
I botched that test a few ways. Next time:
-Tell Ss which Qs don't count
-Take the test /myself/
-Ss write Qs
Ware: package it and share it with another class. Basically, something broke. Come up with workaround together.
OK, the inevitable one.
Q7: You have a completely paperless lesson planned, but the wifi goes down. What is plan B?
...
A6: If they aren't ready, why assess... give them the portion they're ready for and push back the rest... https://t.co/wyhmgQGeCJ

Mobile Thermos Unclear Ware. Goofyness. I liked times like that as a student. It invited playfulness/mistakes.
Agreed! We're working on developing PLC culture in district so sure this will come up for some
A7 Not the wifi?!?!?! Cancel school. It can't be done. Just kidding.
A7: Ensure docs are available offline when planning lesson.
A7 This is the real answer. Thanks Jangal! https://t.co/vXRDBp8Q6d

A6 Play the shipwreck/lifeboat game. Goal: How do we save everyone? The Qs common theme is what does T do? Ss should do a lot more
A7 If you ask our techy kids at my school if they would like to use paper, they get super excited! Old school is fun too!
A7: Freak out for ~5m then do it the old-fashioned way. I'm upgrading curriculum so have the old stuff to fall back on.
A7: My go-to is pass out paper and let's write and talk... from there let's play a game... https://t.co/tK0jWYfIjx
