#TEDEdChat I think we need to show students the goals and dreams that the adults in their lives ( teachers, coaches, parents, etc) are working towards. In order to break the myth we need to show students learning doesn't end with a degree.
A1: We provide SS with a school and classroom culture that embraces differences, We invite in the community to share their expertise and we provide Ss with experiences that allow them look at problems though multiple lenses. #TEDEdChat
#TEDEdChat A1: we should teach our students that they will only go as far as much as they are willing to work for their goals. & that only they can decide what will make them truly happy!
#TEDEdChat A1 maybe there is a destiny, but there are different ways to follow it ... so I tell my students to be open-minded and confindent ... they'll find their way when they dare to try something out
Understand that happiness is created by our owns and we define what happiness means to individuals. Put themselves in uncomfortable situations and learned to overcome is a great example of happiness #TEDEdChat
#TEDEdChat A2: by teaching them to get involved in projects for community improvement, and first finding what their passion(s) are, and next, how to fulfill those passions through hard work and dedication
Potentials can only be measured by the number of experienced individuals had. For example, making transitions from high school to university, working in retail customer service to banking customer service or changing to a completely different job and industry #TEDEdChat
Showing students how the greatest inventions and innovations involve multiple disciplines...the more you know the greater the potential you have at creating or doing something no one has ever thought about. #TEDEdChat
#TEDEdChat A2 We must offer the students a variety of opportunities to discover their potential. We offer different projects from grade 5 onwards. In grade 8 we do a special potential analysis.
This can include take courses at schools that students are interested to gain deeper knowledge, experimental learning such as volunteering, part time job, summer job, co-op etc to gain hands on experience to see what environment they like the most #TEDEdChat
A3: Advocate for a whole curriculum instead of streaming Ss early in their development - starting w/ changing school culture of predicting Ss future #TEDEdChat
#TEDEdChat A3: its all about integration! Show students how the different subject areas can be connected and studied simultaneously. This will cause them to learn more quickly, deeply, and value their education more.
There needs to be more cross curricular planning. Students shouldn't be asking...why am I doing Math in English...cross curricular learning should be the expectation...not the exception. #TEDEdChat
#TEDEdChat Q3 Develop interdisciplinary projects for the students - & make this clear to students! For e.g. we integrate #STEM learning with arts/dance & culture here in Scotland to support creative learning - e.g. https://t.co/JzmQBUEf0H
A3 Provide a project based activity that incorporates multiple tasks to engage a range of soft skills including service to others and involves a local charity: promotion, completing a challenge (17 miles walk), attending a presentation. #TEDEdChat@LNAACT
Make connections to people in all walks of life. In order to support the potential of our students teachers need to know what possibilities are out there...that way we can connect our students to the possibilities so they can one day make impossibilities realities. #TEDEdChat
