Hi Deb! Hope all is well with you and yours!

Tidbit: "Servant Leadership" is a term coined by Robert Greenleaf. See the image for his definition https://t.co/2e1ia5mCSh

Saw my oncologist last Wednesday and she told me she'd see me again in three months.

Tonight's Topic: "Educating in the Context of Servant Leadership"
-
-
OK...hope you had a chance to read the definitions of servant-leadership...Q1 coming...
-
I like that idea of servant leadership. How may I be of service is what I ask.
-
-
Q1:What are you thoughts about defining adults in education as being considered a part of "servant leadership?"
-
Q1:What are your thoughts about defining adults in education as being considered a part of "servant leadership?"
-
Servant Leadership huh? Sounds ominous.
-
Tweets not loading Grrrrr 😤
-
-
Check out the definitions from the previous posts.
-
is going to help me out--again. This is beyond frustrating!!!
-
-
-
Q1:What are your thoughts about defining adults in education as being considered a part of "servant leadership?"
-
-
-
Can only see tweets if you respond/tag me, worked fine w/ other chats tonight 😞 don't get it
-
A1 Adults need to nurture.
-
I thinks I need to talk to someone from Twitter--if that is at all possible!
-
A1. Well, the very act of educating IS act of service, even moreso since field doesnt pay much, more sacrifice from oneself
-
A1: Titles do not make us servant leaders- we must choose to lead that way.
-
-
A1 Nurturing is what being a servant leader is all about.
-
-
Absolutely! So much is about mindset as well and the context in which we do our work.
-
Servant Leadership: Said to occur when one wants to lead, then grows to someone aspirin to lead.
-
A1.To be T means to devote self to community, b/c its to cultivate future members of community
-
It's also about being compassionate and generous in spirit.
-
-
A1: no profession of greater service than that of a teacher. Truly putting the needs & interests of Ss before their own.
-
I like the reference you make to "spirit"
-
-
Q2 coming up...with the help of if it doesn't make it on to my feed.
-
As I delve deeper into Edu.Field, "like working w/kids" as many who resp w/why become a T isnt enuf
-
Q2: Do you think most ppl think of those of us in ed. as embracing & being part of "servant leadership?" Why or why not?
-
-
What? Nurses, doctors, lawyers, social workers, even garbage collectors serve people.
-
Yes, it is important to dig a little deeper and try to articulate the bigger thoughts
-
Q2: Do you think most ppl think of those of us in ed. as embracing & being part of "servant leadership?" Why or why not?
-
YES!! It is a way of looking at all our vocations.
-
-
A2. I think that idea comes as u delve deeper into career field as Coll.Stu. 1/?
-
It's something to embrace as a way of looking at all our work.
-
When are focused on children and growth they surely can change the world, one student at a time.
-
2/? Like I mentioned b4, most, like me, get into edu. bc "we liked working w/kids" but that idea changes further in coll.
-
This is an understatement that we know to be true from our experience.
-
Out of all those jobs, I think garbage collector might be the most important.
-
3/? U look @ conditions educators face eg Detroit, the pay, the struggle w/ policymakers on top of trying to Teach/connect
-
-
I also think that our experiences add to our definitions and the way we view things--as they should
-
-
4/4 EduField bc more than just liking kids, it bcoms "R u prepared to stand fast in the face of those challenges, for the Ss
-
-
Q3: Does your district/school/staff/colleauges think of themselves as "servant-leaders?" How do you know?
-
My momma helped me. Teachers they bored me to tears.
-
from Q3: Does your district/school/staff/colleauges think of themselves as "servant-leaders?"
-
A3. I dont kno. I dont think some of my peers r quite there, a few r. The T I vol. w/ certainly, thinks so
-
A2 Sometimes educators get jaded. I remember once asking for resources, and the full-time professors were like, why bother?
-
A3 While many of our consider this, I think it must be a supported process across a system to take hold.
-
When teachers tell "why they decided to teach in the first place," the concept of Serv. ldshp comes up w/o using those wds.
-
A2 They had tenure at a community college, and they weren't interested in anything beyond that.
-
Hate to call out my peers, but I see that some dont take advantage of Vol.Opps. I understand due to work/fam/life, but...1/?
-
When teachers tell "why they decided to teach in the first place," the concept of Serv. ldshp comes up w/o using those wds.
-
It's sad b/c I often see enthusiastic new tchrs. get jaded by veteran tchrs.-not all veteran tchrs-just some.
-
-
Ive met plenty of ppl who just as busy but find time to do service, those ppl are servant leaders
-
Don't worry. I wasn't going to report you to the plagiarism Gods. ;)
-
The Q was not meant to call anyone out, just to reflect on the need for full thoughtful processes
-
That was my experience. When folks get jaded, they need to ask themselves why instead of being resigned to it
-
Yes, that was totally the purpose.
-
-
-
true, and I apologize, but I see some classmates/Ss in my Col. who dont take full adva. for service-learn
-
Q4 How do you think the public views ppl who are in education?
-
Q4 How do you think the public views ppl who are in education?
-
I think it's time for us to find ways to really articulate our roles as "whole beings"
-
and it tends to frustrates me 'cause Future Ts need as much exp. out on field as possible
-
The easy part about servant leadership in schools is it is an easy way to humanize yourself to students through coaching
-
A4: like they view all profession with some excellent practitioners, some average and some substandard
-
That's also a lovely way to promote the"caring relationship" & connection that's impt. to supporting resilience
-
Q4: How do you think the public views ppl who are in education?
-
says " think it's time for us to find ways to really articulate our roles as "whole beings" "
-
Q4 (b) Do you think the public sees and values educators' hearts as well as their minds?
-
A4 "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach."
-
Wouldn't it be great if they loved us all, and we did the things that they loved! https://t.co/MY1qzExHkx
-
-
A4: like they view all profession with some excellent practitioners, some average and some substandard
-
A4 They get the entire summer off.
-
That saying is so unfortunate--and so not true.
-
A4 There are some who respect teachers. Not enough.
-
Yes, that is another common comment I hear
-
A4. Not always, as numerous examples around the US can attest. Just see CTU's April 1st strike, Detroit
-
-
I remember my mom being socked with that. Said just to trigger her. And it did, every time.
-
Me too! I still react to those comments.
-
A4: many say they could never do what a teacher does, others think anyone is capable: divergent views
-
A4 I had a student tell me that only people who should study English are those who are going to teach it.
-
I would love to see someone who thinks it's a "cake-walk" come and teach for a week.
-
Q4 (b) Do you think the public sees and values educators' hearts as well as their minds?
-
-
I dont kno, theres a dissonance between US saying it values Edu,but not acting to save Ss,to invest,to hear both StuVoiceTVo
-
-
A4 This same student told me that he was fine being assistant manager of the dept at Sears. My class was waste of time.
-
Great point! If we REALLY valued the student, would we be doing some of the things we have been doing?
-
*Save Schools. Ss dont need saving, they need someone to listen
-
A4b. They will! Spent Sat at and met so many new teachers who are very focused on of students
-
This is so good to hear!!! (Did you tell them about ?? ;)
-
I couldn't have said it any better!
-
A4: I think it is the heart piece which separates those practitioners who have a positive public image
-
A1 One of my thoughts, honestly, is "in service to whom, and who determines the parameters?" Shared agency fine by me.
-
-
Yeah, then ppl turn around and say "Well, youre abandoning the Ss! Were doing this for the kids!"
-
My brother felt the same way, except he wanted to farm. He does like classics.
-
Are they mutually exclusive? I think not. Something to think about...
-
At least he likes the classics. And farming is a good occupation.
-
Q5 is kind of interesting...interested to see how ppl respond...
-
Well, I've certainly had parents tell me (if rarely) I "have to" do what they say. That doesn't set well.
-
-
A4(b) Minds, maybe. Hearts, not so much. Depends on if you were personally affected by a teacher.
-
Q5:How is servant- leadership and professionalism connected in education?
-
-
Yet, I'm more than happy to hear parents out and work out together a plan of support for the kid.
-
Q5 Q5:How is servant- leadership and professionalism connected in education?

(I'm getting a bit philosophical and digging deep tonight on
-
Now that's an interesting thought. I taught Freshman Comp which was even harder to make fun.
-
A5. In service, we learn how to be a Professional in the field
-
A4 b It takes an open heart to appreciate an open heart.
-
From "I'm getting a bit philosophical and digging deep tonight on "
-
From "I'm getting a bit philosophical and digging deep tonight on "
-
-
A5: in people based enterprises making those around us better is professionalism
-
A5 Ought to be one and the same across the board, regardless of profession.
-
Is it me or does anyone else find it interesting-when we have deeper conversations, we don't have as much participation.Hmm
-
I need to hunt down those servantleadership definitions so Im confident in A5 answer lol
-
I think saying one job is "more important" than another is counter-productive. A place for all.
-
A5 As an aside, I get a lot more out of a doctor when they treat me like a person and not like a billable.
-
Q5: I would like to see teachers compensated as the professionals that they are compared to other professionals that serve.
-
My last comment was supposed to be "A5"
-
Q6: How does resilience relate to servant-leadership?
-
Anyway, found the meanings, can expand on my A5
-
You should try going to page. I can see them there, it just wouldn't let me retweet them!
-
A5 I really loved my surgeon. My ophthamologist, not so much.
-
Education centers around guiding/cultivating Ss/children, esp. around their formative yrs 1/?
-
A6 You need to be resilient if you are going to open people up. Let them warm up to you.
-
Might not be popular, but we need , not just who can count points for grades.
-
Is it me or anyone else find it interesting when we have deeper conversations we don't have as much participation Thoughts?
-
-
Being both professional&ServLeaders means that making connections w/ Ss achieves the best possible result, 2/?
-
-
Q7: What are you going to do tomorrow as a result of tonight?
-
It may just be coincidence. Or perhaps more people listen.
-
ServLead emphasis on human connection also balances cold professionalism
-
Q6: How does resilience relate to servant-leadership?
-
4/4 Times when Ts & Ss can hav fun but also times for serious
-
Perhaps more listening, yes. And perhaps more space for additional reflection, too.
-
Although we were few in number tonight, it was a powerful . I think it's impt. to tackle difficult topics.

-
Sara says: anyone else find it interesting when we have deeper conversations we don't have as much participation Thoughts?
-
A7. Figure out how to convey idea of "Narrative crafted by those in Power" to my 4th graders. Still having difficult time
-
Can I quote you? Seriously.
-
That's probably very true.
-
Q7: What are you going to do tomorrow as a result of tonight?
-
I am all about narrative!!!!!!
-
A6: the people who often most need assistance are most reluctant , resiliency needed to find a way beyond impasse
-
-
A6. (I know out of order) Connecting w/ ppl all the time takes a toll,so sometimes we must be resilient than usual
-
Yes, we must "take care of the caretaker" and be thoughtful abt OUR resilience.
-
-
I'm kinda feeling on multi-task overload. Time to figure out why your tweets are not appearing in the feed
-
-
I am so appreciative to all of you who stayed with us through this .
-
This is my mission this week. I feel the same way.
