Today we are going to talk about starting class off right!
-
We will be using the Q1,A1,Q2,A2...formative
-
Please start by introducing yourself!
-
-
Hi, Rachelle from Pittsburgh, teach Spa, Fr , busy with end of year, hard to believe, have lots of ideas to try!
-
Kim from PA, Title 1 Math & Grade 1 Science Teacher at Wallenpaupack SD
-
Hey Rachelle! How many more weeks do you guys have?
-
Roy Mitchell 6th & 8th science, living in Alabama, but teaching in Georgia. Glad to be back in It has been a while.
-
Welcome Kim! You and are both from PA!
-
Hey Roy! it has been a while! Glad to have you back!
-
Q1 is coming up in 1 minute
-
We have this week and next week yet
-
Niko PYP Coordinator from Bangkok Thailand
-
-
Thanks, my first time at .
-
Q1: What academic+behavioral expectations do you want Ss to uphold when they enter class? How can you reg. reinforce them?
-
awesome! hope you enjoy it!
-
Leticia, 5th gr T in Pasadena, CA
-
Q1 is now up in ! Come join the action!
-
Q1 is now up in ! Come join the action!
-
-
A1 Active inquirers that are finding out knowledge that they transfer into enduring understandings
-
A1: Knowing things they can do completely on their own to get setup to learn for the period
-
A1 An open mind, willing to try new things, collaborate, talk to me & express needs for class
-
A1 I expect Ss to listen & show respect to me & classmates, show motivation in their learning, be productive, try their best
-
A1(con): Ss feel good about cons. taking steps to get setup. It helps to mentally prepare them
-
A1: Ss are creatures of habit. Having a starter every day is good, but I'm not that advanced. Use a "quiet signal" to start.
-
Hey . Happy Monday! Shai from PA, HS Math T here. Loving the weather! Looking more like golf weather this week!
-
This curiosity is key! How can Ts reinforce it at the beginning of each class?
-
Welcome Shai! Our PA crew is huge today!
-
-
A1: I actually love watching my students, as they enter the room. They know to look at agenda, gather any papers, & work.
-
Start exps behav or learning as any action that is respectful, safe & responsible
-
I'd love to hear more about your entrance routine! I taught MS so I imagine elem. is a bit different
-
I totally agree! Great to see students get setup by themselves and dive right into learning!
-
A1: I guess I should explain that my classes are asynchronous because I .
-
let students create their own burning questions, give time to investigate, and give feedback on their process
-
having written/projected instructions can help with this ind. learning vibe!
-
-
This next Q builds off the first one!
-
The agenda and reminders are always in the same place, colored coated. They are handwritten on whiteboard.
-
What routines can you implement to maximize learning time at the beginning of class?
-
Q2: What routines can you implement to maximize learning time at the beginning of class?
-
Actually been playing with how I can use and to create agendas as well.
-
I did the same. I exp. with color coding visual aids around the room and Ss getting used to a key!
-
Ss enter & sit on floor in circle. I pique curiosity by stating a problem to solve, posing a question, showing a visual
-
For some Ss a reminder of "Everything you need to do right now is in blue" was helpful
-
A2: Some have mentioned that having a go to opener, or something else that always starts the day can help with that routine.
-
A2: Don't have down time @ start of class-should have meaningful work/discussion/preparation in store. Productive habits!
-
A2 agenda, schedules, information for students is always presented the same way, same place, empowering students
-
Provocation with purpose, expectations change with the learning engagement, entry questions, discussion starters S directed
-
Okay, so maybe mine are just colorful, because I haven't gotten to the CW is this color, HW is this color, etc.
-
A2 I write obj on board, always in Span, use and to remind what to have for class
-
I miss writing the objective in Spanish :(
-
My agenda always starts with the LO.(learning objective).
-
-
A2 Often I get Ss interested & attentive by singing a song, watching a video clip, or a read aloud about our daily topic.
-
A2: Building off , we'd start with a POD that either reinforced prior learning or intro/tied to new concept
-
relevant engaging provocations
-
Very cool! Multi-sensory engagement is key!
-
I used to start with a "get the goof" but as I went asynchronous got away from it.
-
A2: My Ss partner read with 1st gr once class starts. So they unpack backpacks, get CB and reading folders to begin the day.
-
Sometimes showing a 30 sec. clip posing Q or prompt Q's from Ss enticed them!
-
Just want you to know that elementary Ts (esp K-2) have their way paved to heaven! You are all angels!
-
1st gr= 1st grade? are they in a different grade?
-
I will put a symbol (like the summation symbol) and try to have Ss brainstorm what it means. Great conv
-
Starting the next lesson at the end of the previous can provoke thinking & increase efficiencies with clear intent
-
Awesome idea! I can pic. a mystery symbol in number sentence and having Ss make obs. based on parts https://t.co/OjuK3NQChk

Love this idea for priming! Get Ss excited about what they are going to learn! https://t.co/vjs3lpzhZX

-
-
very interesting! what benefits do you see for Ss in the diff. grades?
-
Q3: What are different ways you can get students excited about what they are going to learn?
-
-
A3: Give Ss a dif't way to complete mundane assignment-instead of a report, have a skit, write a song, make a game, etc...
-
A3: I don't have to do anything, because my Ss are always excited to walk into my room. :-0 (JK) Having a routine helps.
-
A3 Try diff ideas, creative, let Ss think abt a topic, give some "previews", dropping hints makes them curious
-
A3 Allow them to have some student choice (topic, activity, project, resources). Use technology to engage.
-
Choice is always good! BTW, did you see bama softball won, heading to super regionals.
-
A3: As an entrance act. they can come up with Q about topic and pursue related info in learning activities
-
Absolutely, won pretty handily, too
-
to add on, gives Ss choice of process/ tools they use!
-
-
Great ideas for getting Ss fired up about learning are being shared in Jump in for the last Q!
-
A3: cut up prim source image like puzzle piece & distribute 2 Ss 2 invest indiv piece 2 doc & discuss
-
What Q's do 5th graders ask during process?
-
A3 provocations, guiding questions, visual thinking routines, student choice
-
A3 be excited urself, the Ss will pick up on ur excitement
-
Pairing up Ss across grades for reading! Benefits on both sides! https://t.co/xfmuesCcai
-
-
1st gr T says her Ss r eager 2 lrn high freq words so they can read w/big kid. Blds comp bc 5th gr ask ?s b4, during, n after.
-
Ss invest in the learning & are intrinsically motivated if there is ownership of the process
-
A3 I also love to use concept cartoons to hook the Ss,debate what we think is going on in the pic or which character is right
-
Great way to engage Ss and work on perspective taking based on visual cues! https://t.co/jOySEEkAKm

-
My son loved reading to younger Ss. He volunteered to read when he was in MS and HS.
-

-
-
They have learned 2 ask text-spec ?s and inference type ?s. Helps the 5th gr as well. They learn how to ask ?s during inquiry.
-
A4: I do , Ss walk into class w. varying degrees of understanding.Start class w. intro ques, quiz, puzzle to assess
-
This is a great fun activity!
-
Visual literacy prompts r inclusive most Ss can access the information
-
Q4a: What diff. FA strategies can you use at beginning of class to check for understanding?
-
Yay, . I always have a FA using in my agenda as well. Ss reach it at diff. times.
-
A3: Post a word/concept on board, Ss write ?s on post-it & place on board. The answer 2 the ? has to be the word/concept
-
interesting look into a . How do you act on what you notice?
-
-
Again I use concept cartoons often In Science to draw out what they know
-
-
A4a: I encourage Ss to use diff. strategies to solve POD
-
Q4b: How do you act on student responses you gather with a specific formative assessment strategy?
-
A4: I mentioned this already. I do use daily in my agenda. Sometimes at the beginning, some during the agenda
-
very cool! Would love to see this in action!
-
I wish I got to use it more while I was in the classroom. Instant and if I want anon. strategy sharing!
-
A4 Entrance ticket, Plickers, Kahoot, Type 1 or 2 writing, asking questions, students explain understanding aloud.
-
My classes are asynchronous so Ss are at diff. spots in the agenda.
-
What's Type 1 or 2 writing?
-
I have used to have the Ss draw what our vocab words mean. Fun for the kids and easy to check for understanding
-
I am thankful there is a super team making it even better! :-)
-
-
A4 Use FA data to group into learning centers, change instruction based on needs, remediate or enrich.
-
A4 Ss also record their thinking on a topic using
-
A4b: Project Ss strategy, ask others to make observations. Might circle around to it later in period if it ties in
-
love how you are flexible with your teaching based on your data! https://t.co/csmvW82JRz
