Great to see you Dan! Hope all is well!
A1 what really has resonated with me lately is the importance that is placed on relationships - building trust and understanding
A1 Great educators lead by modeling & do it in a respectful way. Great educators take action instead of just talk about things.
A1: Build relationships with Sts, collaborate with classrooms globally & ask their Sts how they want to impact the world
Welcome, Keaton. Love to see students on . Way to model the way!

A1: Great teachers bring an energy level to their class that engages students in a positive manner to promote quality learning.
Welcome, Alyssa. Multi-tasking at your finest.
A5: Still working on finding the balance between letting my Ts figure it out as they go vs. not letting things slide.
Great "seeing" you tonight Nick! Way to represent
Love seeing that answers about great educators overwhelmingly include RELATIONSHIPS in the answer! Warms my heart!
A1: Great teachers develop great relationships with Ss, teach from where Ss are at and help them grow as learners
Fearless. Love this. https://t.co/mg2lOxrJ73
A1 I think great educators are fearless. They try new things, revamp the old and put student needs first
A1. A great educator can take many shapes, but compassion, creativity, and humor come to mind. +
A1: great communicators, passionate about what they do, forward thinkers, growth/innovator mindset always
A1 And they work hard to build and keep relationships with their kids
We are so on the same page. My answer was basically the same! https://t.co/nCNcQo9zGE
A1: Great educators take risks, put their students above everything else, make relationships their top priority...
A1: Loving so many responses=relationships. "Kids don't care how much you know until they know how much you care."
A1: Put kids first. Try new things. Inspire the kids and staff around them.
Holy moly! Q1 off with a bang! This is such a great start to . Keep up the awesomeness!
+ A1. Great educators have a low tolerance for anything that isn't good for students--and find workarounds when necessary.
A1: great teachers put students first and keep positive
A1.2 Great educators are not only the lead learner but they get others to invest to becoming lead learners as well.
What if we defined it as a calling instead of a job?
Very cool! You know what they say...great minds think alike! :-)

A1 Great eds are always learning. Never content to sit back on their laurels
Q1 trends— relationships, fearless, feedback, risks.
A1.2: Great educators work to reach all kids, are resilient in the face of today’s challenges, & love building relationships
agreed, they encourage others to keep learning too.
A whole lot of talk about relationships. Couldn't agree more. A post about what matters most...… https://t.co/L18XW4VIze
A1 Always looking for new ways to help Ss learn. Looking to learn.
Every day is a chance to build relationships: Teachers, Students, Parents. Must work across all fronts. https://t.co/VfMeKfsuc6

https://t.co/zj5I9YdrDK

We are one minute away from Q2; thank you for being here!
A1: building a strong foundation/relationship w/ Ss 1st!

It is so awesome to have you on this evening. LOVE when students join! Leader!
Ditto to all who've said relationships. Great teachers focus on relationships with students, colleagues, & all stakeholders.
Congrats and welcome back to
it can make all the difference!
Agree! If it isn’t a calling, we’re in trouble.
relationships are vital. W/out those, our schools won't grow. great answer! 👍
Yes - always looking to grow themselves to provide the best possible for their kids. https://t.co/D1xsSgCQar
A1 Teachers are transparent and reflect on their own teaching and learning.
Just think if every teacher embodied the qualities we just listed for A1. Love it!
A1-They are motivators & cheerleaders for their Ss. They make the leaning exciting & cheer the students for every step they take

A1 Teachers are transparent and reflect on their own teaching and learning.
A1: Great educators give their students choice and voice in the classroom
Welcome Amanda! You are joining the most important and best profession in the world!
Teachers are like students, we are constantly learning from our success & our failures
A2 always changing. What will work today? What is the best way to reach this content? Or these ss? What will work today?
A2-Great educators always reflect on their pedagogy. They look to improve so they can help each individual student
Trying my best to follow you lead, brother! You lit it up as well. Passionately curious! https://t.co/lmYoBMIjr8
As well as an ON FIRE IGNITE session at conference on Friday. Made EDUs of Iowa proud!
Hello! Tina Halverson Instructional coach for Clarksville Schools in NE Iowa
A1: Great Educators Teach the Student not the book. The focus is not on the now but developing lifelong readers & writers
A2: how true and the trick is to find the hope in the classroom and bring it to the front in their creations and passions
A2 I love this quote. Teaching is messy. If oyu are meeting your Ss needs, you are constantly changing plans/ways of teaching
A2: Great teachers can see where their ss struggle and they make tweaks until they have created the ideal lesson, environment, etc
A2: When you think you've made it you just fell behind - WGEDD are always adjusting - embrace the imperfections as a way to grow.
A2 Lessons don't look the same from one period to the next. Lessons change as kids change
A2: Great educators reflect on their work. It isn't a deficit mindset, it is a growth mindset. They want to be better every day!
A1: a great educator is like an actor they need to read there audience before they get on stage
A2-Each school year month, week, and day is different. Great educators know they have to be on their toes.
A2: There is a misconception that our classrooms/schools need to be perfect. We make mistakes and adjustments to get better.
A2. Great teachers are always tweaking their practices and moving to where Ss are, they are not stagnant in their instruction.
agree. Differentiation is a must and ts should have each ss and their progress in mind.
A2 Great tchrs aren't afraid to differentiate right in the middle of a class
A2: This speaks to knowing your Ss--who they are, where they're at, where they want to go--& adjusting what you do to meet them.
A2 If we aren't modeling vulnerability and growth then how can we expect that from our Ss? There is NO perfect lesson plan!
A1: Great Educators differentiate based on students needs!
or a lesson doesn't look the same given by two different teachers! And that's okay!
A2 I see all 725+ students throughout week- I know every classroom, every day could be different- one size/lesson doesn’t fit.
A2: As a principal, I do it all the time. What has worked well for Ss, Ts, Ps, and where can I improve.
Makes me think of "Continuous improvement is better than delayed perfection." Mark Twain keep getting better everyday
A2.2: Learning and improvement are messy and great educators are constantly making changes to meet the needs of students.
A2. It is a calling and they are constantly trying to adapt to the world around them. Throw out the brown paper files!
A2: flexibility to student needs takes precedent over perfectly implemented lesson plans compliance does not always= engagement
Q2 When Ss say they'll be gone next wk & wonder what the assign. is--I say I don't know. Depends on how the learning goes this wk.
Q2: "Perfect classrooms" are created when meeting Ss where they are & accommodate to those needs by any means necessary
A2: It’s not about perfection, it’s about lifelong learning. Model that you have passion & let it be cool to love learning.
A2: Perfection is an illusion. What's right for one student/class might not work for another.
A2.2 Something I tell my Ss every day. "Learning is a process, not an event. Learning is messy. Learning must also be celebrated!"
Common themes from Q2: Differentiation, constant learning and adjusting! All in for kids.
Amen, sister! https://t.co/XSdMl2ZuJC
A1: Great Educators Teach the Student not the book. The focus is not on the now but developing lifelong readers & writers
Agreed. Found that 's content as a context (vs. THE context) for learning to be helpful.
A2 A quiet, compliant classroom doesn't always make for an engaged classroom. Learning is rarely neat and orderly!
Teaching is messy and constantly evolving. Yes! https://t.co/Wcc7Nasz46
A2 I love this quote. Teaching is messy. If oyu are meeting your Ss needs, you are constantly changing plans/ways of teaching
A2: Great educators look for new ways to improve their instruction. I chose pursue teaching because I was called to it!
A2: Learning can and should be messy! Teaching changes with the dynamic of the students!
This. https://t.co/3jshq7ICgF
A2 A quiet, compliant classroom doesn't always make for an engaged classroom. Learning is rarely neat and orderly!
I think there are perfect lesson plans - just no perfect lessons. Things never go exactly the way we anticipate.
Q2: it's not if the classroom looks like but rather if it sounds and feels right to the Ss
A2. Great teachers write their lessons in pencil because pencil is easy to erase when you inevitably make changes.
Q3 is just around the corner! Keep bringing the noise!
A2: Also speaks to reflection. Great Ts are highly reflective.
Embrace the imperfections. Love this language. We need to teach our Ss this on SO many levels! https://t.co/NxEwWcEzI0
A2: When you think you've made it you just fell behind - WGEDD are always adjusting - embrace the imperfections as a way to grow.
A2: Great Ts don't pull out the same stock lesson, but create learning plans for the people currently in the room.
A2: I am constantly changing how I do things. You have to- if you aren't you're Stagnant
A2. I would also add that great educators are willing to change to meet the needs of students. They are positive, growth-minded.
just....yes
https://t.co/tRFB8KMiE3
A2 A quiet, compliant classroom doesn't always make for an engaged classroom. Learning is rarely neat and orderly!
A2 Every day is different, and that's good! https://t.co/7J4XjmwHpU
A2. Great teachers are always tweaking their practices and moving to where Ss are, they are not stagnant in their instruction.
A2 I soooo agree with this. reflection helps us refine our craft and bring the best to our students https://t.co/w7vbRm8hCC
A2: Also speaks to reflection. Great Ts are highly reflective.
A2: I had a coach who said "you can miss your spot...once" Great educators don't keep missing their spots. Growth
Our kids need to know that learning is a journey. The experience and the people we meet along the way matter.
Q3: Share your thoughts on this quote from : “It doesn’t matter how hard we work if the path we are on is wrong.”
A2. Sticking to a plan for the sake of sticking to a plan (in education or anywhere actually) is no way to live ...
A1: Great Educators use assessment to inform instruction instead of punitively against students.
yes controlled chaos is def not a bad thing.
A2: I tell my Ts Im not lkng 4 perfection from them & I hope they aren't looking 4 it from me. Mistakes=where new learning goes.
This seems to align with the common misconception that compliance=engagement.. I couldn't agree more https://t.co/85bR2IS4xx
A2 A quiet, compliant classroom doesn't always make for an engaged classroom. Learning is rarely neat and orderly!
Yes, Beth! Knowing your Ss is SO important. Understand and adjust accordingly. https://t.co/eqoej1qGRI
A2: This speaks to knowing your Ss--who they are, where they're at, where they want to go--& adjusting what you do to meet them.
A2: Not everything goes as planned, and you created the lesson so you can change it to each days needs.
Two totally different things. That much is certain.
A2 We are lifelong learners as we hope are Ss to be; great Ts are always seeking ways to reach & engage Ss in meaningful learning
In my classroom its always a great day to be wrong - Just trying to (suck less every day)
It sure is! https://t.co/uETsbDhNwS
A2 Every day is different, and that's good! https://t.co/7J4XjmwHpU
A2. Great teachers are always tweaking their practices and moving to where Ss are, they are not stagnant in their instruction.
Q2 trends — constantly evolving, flexible, imperfect, reflection, messy.
A3. Hours and stress doesn't = success.. If you are working harder than your kids its all wrong
A3: Like working hard on test prep for standardized testing, even though it is one sm piece of assmt?
A3 if you are not willing to grow and learn, you will not get better
LOVE these hashtags! Why? Bc I'm an https://t.co/5ggoMuDpTz
In my classroom its always a great day to be wrong - Just trying to (suck less every day)
perfectly stated Dave and Connie. Content is the context to develop and practice skills.
Q3 RT
https://t.co/B3GOGKOTUm
Q3: Share your thoughts on this quote from : “It doesn’t matter how hard we work if the path we are on is wrong.”
A3: Reminds me of the work of Hattie--lots of things help Ss, but what things are most effective?
BAM! There you go. https://t.co/UVdNdJAqb7
A3. Hours and stress doesn't = success.. If you are working harder than your kids its all wrong
A3: It doesn’t matter if we’re working hard, we have to know our goal and our outcome match our effort.
A3 We must ALWAYS go back to this Q "Is this what is best for kids?" Every conversation must be with the kids in mind.
thanks Jill :) shifts blame to growth and reflection.
or if you go home more tired then the ss, you are doing it all wrong.
Scary, maybe for you, that I am thinking the exact same way, Chris. What will have the biggest impact? https://t.co/giZHZVafP7
A3: Reminds me of the work of Hattie--lots of things help Ss, but what things are most effective?
You can be a great teacher with great lesson plants but you'll never be successful if you aren't teaching to your students needs.
A3: Working hard and doing the right work are two different things.
Deb just dropped the mic... Well said.
A3: I think that it's about keeping the big picture in mind. Sometimes we get sidetracked & down a path with no purpose.
A3: It speaks to the importance of the process, rather than the result as being what is most important.
That is hard for Ts...
100% agree!!! Keep the kids at the focus of everything we do!
and the ss are the ones who suffer the most
This is excellent. Suck less every day is my new goal.
A3: Never a question if we are working hard; we all do. However, are we focused on high leverage things? Too imp. not to be.
A3: You can buy the best seeds but if you’re gardening in toxic soil, the harvest will be pointless. Cultivate a quality culture.
Very true! https://t.co/sncACQw6ne
You can be a great teacher with great lesson plants but you'll never be successful if you aren't teaching to your students needs.
A3: How do we know we are on the wrong path unless we define it for ourselves from the start? .
Awesome crew tonight at ! You all are awesome.
RIGHT!!! (Almost) Everything works…. what works the best!? https://t.co/mfUG28wfsT
A3: Reminds me of the work of Hattie--lots of things help Ss, but what things are most effective?
haha mine too! I love this!👍 great motivation right there
You can be all year long!
Agreed.. If the students can't articulate where they are going and why the learning doesn't matter https://t.co/JJHg2DtsGa
I'd also add that engagement isn't enough- we should be empowering students to take ownership in their learning.… https://t.co/x9x00FILeM
That is the question we should ALWAYS have in mind. There are many things to do. Which things are the best things?
A3 A reminder that we all need to take responsibility to ensure all stakeholders are at the table during implementation
A3 We always need to develop lessons from the "what do they need to know" mindset.
A3 Working really hard at the status quo is another definition of insanity
Made me stop & think, "Ohhh!" Interesting thought & definitely one to focus on while creating lessons!
A2: Whether an educator or S, we know (& feel) when we are in an effective Ts classroom because of THIS. https://t.co/EUGto1pen7
A3 it's my job to create Ss that are driven & support their adventure - not to drive them down the path I've created
And are we monitoring the impact of those high leverage things? When things don't work, have to change for Ss.
A3 Kind of like my theory of driving. "I may be lost but I am making good time."
And, we are not starting at 0; we are starting at 0.4 according to my man, https://t.co/dthDiesTNs
RIGHT!!! (Almost) Everything works…. what works the best!? https://t.co/mfUG28wfsT
A3: Reminds me of the work of Hattie--lots of things help Ss, but what things are most effective?
A3 Another goodie from “Do we ever acknowledge the perception that our students have of school?”
Cultivate a quality culture. I love that! https://t.co/xrCkzXKMbB
A3: You can buy the best seeds but if you’re gardening in toxic soil, the harvest will be pointless. Cultivate a quality culture.
I know a few who create good lessons, just not presented in ways that help students
This chat is always great...LOL..makes me love Sunday nights!
Ideally both teachers & student leaving equally tired &/or equally energized
I would say the same goes for Ts and PD.
Definitely not. Sometimes leads to amazing places! It's a matter of knowing when to stop & when to keep going.
A3: It's all about objectives. That's why we always set the objective first, to avoid this problem. 1st- what's the goal 2nd HOW?
Great point! Without clear criteria for success, we have no idea where any of us need to be.
A3: it's about the kids! They need to be working hard, Ts should foster that & make it happen.
Yes! Being open to change is so important!
Q3 trends: Shouldn’t work harder than kids, big picture, process, reflect, student needs, whats going to have the biggest impact?
Q4 is coming right up! This chat is on FIRE!
Where does the "Why?" fit in? https://t.co/3Tbkgnr0gN
A3: It's all about objectives. That's why we always set the objective first, to avoid this problem. 1st- what's the goal 2nd HOW?
I could use that rubric :)
https://t.co/LpNumZlM0c
Definitely not. Sometimes leads to amazing places! It's a matter of knowing when to stop & when to keep going.
I'd also include "What do they WANT to know?" Relevance = key to lasting learning.
A3) Effort does not equal results. Sometimes the right path is not straight ahead to the goal.
I might argue this should be the first question... https://t.co/5V3Sr5l0Xl
Where does the "Why?" fit in? https://t.co/3Tbkgnr0gN
A3: It's all about objectives. That's why we always set the objective first, to avoid this problem. 1st- what's the goal 2nd HOW?
Yes, We need to help students on their own path, not lead them down our path. https://t.co/XkXmD6xmHl
A3 it's my job to create Ss that are driven & support their adventure - not to drive them down the path I've created
This, of course, was said in my best Alicia Keys voice. https://t.co/r0hQtZlhzx
Q4 is coming right up! This chat is on FIRE!
If you start with the why, you know what your goals are going to be.
That's just how I heard it!!!!
I was LITERALLY just thinking of this...
Bit semantics, but if your students aren't empowered, I don't believe they are fully engaged.
That made me chuckle. LOL
Work ethic and hustle are keys to success. But without focus your time working will be inefficient.
Definitely--relevance is a key!
I would agree with this. Sometimes we have to help them with WHY they want to know it
A4: I thought you were going to stay away from the presidential elections...
I work hard to help Ts empower themselves to figure what is the right path. This can lead to S empowerment.
A4 This is why it is SO crucial for us as educators to tell our school's story. If we aren't telling it someone else is!
Well played. Let's make it education, my man! https://t.co/lfwHuayISD
A4: I thought you were going to stay away from the presidential elections...
So true. You need a focus to use your time efficiently! https://t.co/Phd4syXod4
Work ethic and hustle are keys to success. But without focus your time working will be inefficient.
A4: If a t doesn't know what to do and go their own way, they believe it's right cuz that's all they know. https://t.co/LDMJL3anXS
A4: Teachers must know the purpose of why they’re doing something vs. this is just what we do in our building.
A4 as a T, I hope to always encourage ss to think for themselves. I want to give them opportunities to think on their own
A4: We need to be sure our students understand what they are learning. They must know why it is important.
Psych research suggests that this happens even w/ "knowledge!" Humans have info filtration biases.
A4: I feel like good teachers don't do this. When I don't know something, I google it. I even tell the kids "let's google this!"
A4 Early childhood students who don’t know but can tell story, thoughts, reasoning - where do we lose our Ss love of learning
Great perspective. I hadn't thought of this in the manner that you have described.
My friend says this all the time: where there is no direction people make their own way. Lead w research based strategies
A4 reminds us about the importance of telling our school stories so we can engage our families in a different way
Iowa should be beaming. absolutely rocked the room at in Kansas City on Friday!
A4: People within your district and school are going to talk. Many times that message is inaccurate and negative. Control it.
Start. With. The. Why. Every time!
https://t.co/ieQhj8HgjP
If you start with the why, you know what your goals are going to be.
A4: Common vision? Core values? Collaboration? Communicate in abundance? You’re going to spin your wheels if answer is “No” to any
A4 we need to be sharing our stories, the awesome things that are happening in our classrooms and our schools
A4: We need to show our students why they are learning and how it is useful to them.
Sorry I'm late to the game ! Madeline from Springfield, MO. Great reflections so far on
A4: We have to be bold and not afraid to tell our story...before someone else does.
A4- The answer shows who you are as a learner. How you react to situations & navigate the process shows your character
So glad you could join us! Welcome to
agreed. They need to make connections as to why the content matters in their lives.
A4: When I am officially a T, I want my students to understand why they are learning something, and have a purpose for teaching it
Yes Tim, I was thinking the same thing! If you aren't telling your story, who is? https://t.co/9bKrKel7fA
A4 we need to be sharing our stories, the awesome things that are happening in our classrooms and our schools
A4 Control your message in your classroom, your building, your district. Be transparent. Otherwise, ppl will do it for you.
A4 A good leader doesn't claim to have all of the answers, but are smart enough to know where to look for solutions
A4: I think this is the beauty and danger of the age in which we live. Our challenge is to direct the power of opinion.
A4: I'm trying to think of a way to comment about ignorance & the importance of being around people smarter than yourself.
We are sooooo on the same page :)
A4. We must live by what we are about & celebrate it. If ppl need support getting there we must provide support & better comm.
A4. If students don't understand the "why" of what we do, they may assume it is not useful, and as a result engagement may suffer.
A4: paint the picture of your building. Parents and the community should see the great things we do not just assume that they know
Thank you so much for being with us!
I agree! We can learn so much from others. https://t.co/XmnFWeYmvH
Yes Tim, I was thinking the same thing! If you aren't telling your story, who is? https://t.co/9bKrKel7fA
A4 we need to be sharing our stories, the awesome things that are happening in our classrooms and our schools
A4: Control the narrative in your school.
thanks. Just thinking of how I/we all felt our first day/week of teaching.
A3: We can fly down the road, but if headed the wrong direction we get farther from goal. Check the map! https://t.co/6tfpJhviZR
Q3: Share your thoughts on this quote from : “It doesn’t matter how hard we work if the path we are on is wrong.”
If you don't tell your story, someone will https://t.co/7ReZvjdg74
A4: People within your district and school are going to talk. Many times that message is inaccurate and negative. Control it.
Q4 We all need to be lifelong learners and collaborators. Must teach students to adopt the same philosophy.
Yes! We overlook the good so frequently. https://t.co/KsZ6IrKl5U
A4: paint the picture of your building. Parents and the community should see the great things we do not just assume that they know
A4.2: With so many tools and ways to communicate, there is no excuse not to tell the wonderful story of your space! Period.
A4.2: sorry I couldn't resist 😂
Q4 trends — tell your story, find meaning, common vision, “know better, do better”, communicate, need agents of change, SHARE!
Absolutely. https://t.co/7k3pvSgypP
A4.2: With so many tools and ways to communicate, there is no excuse not to tell the wonderful story of your space! Period.
Q5: Please respond to quote: “We need to stop praying for a lighter load and start praying for a stronger back.”
A4 Makes me think of teaching digital citizenship to Ss. They must know how to muddle their way through all the false info online
A5: One of my fav quotes. Reminds me that I can't change some things but I can work hard to make lives better.
I’m ALWAYS around people smarter than me! :)
A5: Dont allow this area of expertise to feel as a hassle, let it grow you as a person as you become a role model for your Ss
A5: Focus on the positive, be part of a solution.Complaining rarely helps anyone. Action does. Great educators make things happen.
A5 our workload is only going to get heavier. What are the priorities? How can you work smarter, not harder?
A5: Ts have been complaining about not enough time since the beginning of time - get better at managing what we have.
A5 One of my favs from the conference! Great Educators find a way to keep pushing forward & growing. Average Ts seek easy way out.
A5: it's a tough road and nothing is going to make it easier its finding a better path and leading to that path that will be 😎
Don't curse the lemons ... get busy making lemonade. https://t.co/pstaoNXc2y
Q5: Please respond to quote: “We need to stop praying for a lighter load and start praying for a stronger back.”
A5: I think that sounds like the fastest way to burnout :(
Work smarter, not harder.
A5: We’ve got work to do & it’s going to keep coming. Get after it! Luckily, we don’t have to do it alone. Get your team together!
A5: Be proactive, not reactive. Do what you can. Get better every day. Complaining doesn't help!
A3 Many educators jump on latest educational bandwagon before critically thinking about if it truly will make a difference
A4) People who don't know what they don't know are the scariest. Those who are the ones who empower the demagogues.
You've nailed it, Randi. Identifying the priorities is a huge piece! https://t.co/9P5Q1DgAMr
A5 our workload is only going to get heavier. What are the priorities? How can you work smarter, not harder?
A5+ I tend to get frustrated whenever I hear, "but that's more work," "too much work," or "not realistic" - That's your job!
ME TOO! Isn't it the best?! :)
A5. Your mindset can change the weight of theload, also if you complain and don't look for a better way its your own fault
Check the map! Are you headed in the right direction? https://t.co/DnOtME4RmK
A3: We can fly down the road, but if headed the wrong direction we get farther from goal. Check the map! https://t.co/6tfpJhviZR
Q3: Share your thoughts on this quote from : “It doesn’t matter how hard we work if the path we are on is wrong.”
Exactly - and the easy way is seldom the best way for our kids.
A5: There will always be adversity. When one issue resolves, another will arise. We have to learn to adapt and be flexible
A5: It reminds me of the full-plate analogy. If our plates are full, do we never add any more, or should we rearrange our plates?
A5: Focus on what we can change, instead of complaining about problems.
A5) I would replace "praying for" with "building." We need to build stronger backs, for there is a lot of work to do!
A5 Makes me think of the balance between working your hardest and not burning out. It can be tough, especially for beginning Ts!
It must be what guides all of our decision making. We are in the kid business, not the adult business.
yes def need to weed out what you can and cannot change.
A5 Things aren't getting easier in ed. Quit complaining about kids, conditions, etc and deal with the now. We're not going back
A5 Makes me think of productive struggle and letting kids work through challenges.
A5: We can't control what we're given, but we can control what we do with that. We can be stronger. "
A5b: Take it from a guy who has never been the most talented...
Outsmart > outwork
Agreed, complaining rarely gets anything fixed or makes a better situation. Usually worse.
A5: spend less time complaining about your workload and more time improving your tool belt
A5 Ts are very hardworking and the load will seem lighter if it's more effective & focused
A5 the work we do is critically important and we need to persevere and work hard for our students
We can't complain about the way things are if we aren't willing to do the work to make things better. https://t.co/BXf3Isp2GO
A5+ I tend to get frustrated whenever I hear, "but that's more work," "too much work," or "not realistic" - That's your job!
A5 Focus on what is in your control. Deal with that.
KaBoom - this is simple, yet HUGE! https://t.co/gO7gT2Agn8
A5: Focus on what we can change, instead of complaining about problems.
A5 This goes back to growth mindset as well. We are always changing. Go with it! Be positive. You'll be happier.
We chose a challenging profession ... but it is so worth it. Life is sometimes hard ... get over it.
this is important yet I've noticed not every educator thinks this way They have a cookie cutter idea of the Rt way
To provide more context, this is about knowing the challenges aren't stopping anytime soon. Prioritize.
AMEN! https://t.co/rC1curE1Oj
A5 the work we do is critically important and we need to persevere and work hard for our students
Our load will not get lighter as educators we just need to change our mindset. Only worry about what's in your control.
Right on. We need people who know us well to introduce us to topics we might not find on our own
Part of that falls on the hands of the instructional leader. Have they been taught this? Has it been modeled?
Very well said; can't say enough about shared leadership. All in together.
A5 you can spend all your time whining about all the work you have to do or you can get busy focusing on what is best for kids
A5: advocate 4 Ss if it's 2 much 4 us it's 2 much 4 them. Meet the requirements but fight 4 developmentally appropriate practices
Insightful! Thanks for making me think about the quote in a new light! https://t.co/MQQQh5SVGp
A5:makes me think of need to get more backs involved. Sharing leadership is very important & certainly makes a load… https://t.co/dsVL6SAYMC
A5. I think it is totally reasonable for a teacher to hope for a lighter load. We are human after all.
Truth! We want Ss to be comfortable making mistakes & we must do the same for ourselves
Thank you! We aren't going back so people need to find a way to forge ahead. Complaining isn't going to get them there.
A5: It sounds an awful lot like what we expect Ss to do when they are overloaded w/ homework and such. https://t.co/LGf5MXUbNU
Q5: Please respond to quote: “We need to stop praying for a lighter load and start praying for a stronger back.”
Amen... carry your own weather! https://t.co/r5S4dzvA58
A5: Be proactive, not reactive. Do what you can. Get better every day. Complaining doesn't help!
Prioritize...
and I might add don't back down from change. Attack it head-on! https://t.co/tsEHzT6Ebi
To provide more context, this is about knowing the challenges aren't stopping anytime soon. Prioritize.
A5: We need to focus on what we can control and spend NO time worried about what we can't control.
https://t.co/W1CLXU9FAe
A5: It sounds an awful lot like what we expect Ss to do when they are overloaded w/ homework and such. https://t.co/LGf5MXUbNU
Q5: Please respond to quote: “We need to stop praying for a lighter load and start praying for a stronger back.”
A5) praying for makes it sound like help is coming from the outside..."building" or "strengthening" our backs is more empowering
Q6 is on deck! We are rolling right along.
BOOM! Love the mention of taking the challenges head on. https://t.co/8FhQE71KbJ
Prioritize...
and I might add don't back down from change. Attack it head-on! https://t.co/tsEHzT6Ebi
To provide more context, this is about knowing the challenges aren't stopping anytime soon. Prioritize.
Yes! As a new T, it can seem like the master teachers have "figured it out." They actually are always refining!
I've gotten kind of tired of "Things didn't used to be this way." You're right! Deal with the now.
A5 Stronger backing from policy/decision makers
Q5 trends: FOCUS on what we can control, be positive, grow, priorities, push forward, be productive, teamwork, check your mindset
I would wonder then how meaningful are the challenges? Will they empower me to be Professionally Driven?
I agree! And giving leaders the support they need.
Q6: From : How are you building less compliance and more engagement within your space?
A5 don't complain about what you cannot control. Be a mood / attitude changer.
We can't be content with the current education model that looks much like the 1 room schoolhouse! There is no room for mediocrity!
I wish I could have heard you Friday!! Dad said you were awesome!
A5) I think of rubberbands...one not so strong, the more you add the stronger each individual one becomes.
A5 Agreeing with this quote is not what is best for the Ss. Admins need to understand the trickle down effect of data gathering
A6 Generally, Assignments are rather open-ended. Giving students choice in how to share their learning https://t.co/sYrXGGnNeT
Q6: From : How are you building less compliance and more engagement within your space?
You are too kind! I am just lucky to be working w/ & learning from the best!
Start everyday with your big rocks and what will make the biggest impact https://t.co/fGgp8vytlh
Our load will not get lighter as educators we just need to change our mindset. Only worry about what's in your control.
All learners know busy work when they see it. Goes back to the Why. I’m more willing to use my back if I’m empowered.
A6: by giving students a say in their learning environment.
A6 Involving the Ss in the process is an important first step. How many times do we ask Ss "What would you like to learn about?"
A5: Holy! Did she really go there?!!! That's my kind of educator :)
*instant Twitter follow
We design S-driven classrooms. I tell Ts, you never "get there;" it's like converting 1/3 into a fraction: 33333...
Makes sense. https://t.co/iX5v3CpQBn
All learners know busy work when they see it. Goes back to the Why. I’m more willing to use my back if I’m empowered.
A6: Have Ss make us accountable - if it's "busy work" they should ask about purpose - if we can't answer its time to change.
A6 8:2 For every 8 minutes of listening, students need 2 minutes to reflect (talk, write, draw) and ask questions throughout.
will be starting in 15m, stop on by
A6 By remembering that kids are kids!
We build more engagement when we get to know our students backgrounds and interests and incorporate them into our lessons.
A4: As educators, who do we want telling stories about our schools or classrooms? (Check out !) https://t.co/4eSz9s1GZF
Agree! Same goes for Ts and admins.
A6: Love it. Do we want compliant Ss or do we want Ss who ask questions and authentically engage in conversation?
A6: I've been reflecting on how we mask forcing compliance by labeling it "routines & procedures" and such.
A6 In elem classes, we sometimes feel like all students must be "trained." But trained doesn't always mean engaged
Q6 RT
https://t.co/Rtvdp8qS16
Q6: From : How are you building less compliance and more engagement within your space?
A6:
Trust your teachers. It's the only way to encourage creative environment our Ss deserve. Ts have to know you're on their team.
A6 Flexible space also gives students choice in how to define their time and work.
agreed one recess a day for k-5 bc of low scores is not research based, burnt out teachers is not research based
A6 Students need to be aware of their own learning. More student discussions. More collaboration. More focus on growth.
A6: Any time that student choice and voice are entered into the equation we increase likelihood of engagement. Authentic learning.
A6: Discussion. Take a second to talk to the kids about their activities, ask them questions about how THEY learn. Open forum
building relationships is vital to ss growth.
THIS! https://t.co/j5zlwrYyuD
A5) I think of rubberbands...one not so strong, the more you add the stronger each individual one becomes.
Am I the only one picking up some really amazing educator follows tonight?
I see what you are doing :)
A6: finding the ability to let the Ss lead us. It's their learning and they should be able guide us
that is always such a reassuring thing to hear : )
A6. Trust students and give them trust without making them "earn it" It's amazing what they can do when we trust them
A6.2 Insight from "We are great a putting students a box (reading/writing/math/science). We must get rid of the box!"
A6) Engagement comes through choice / relevance / relationship / interest. Compliance has a place but is fear/power driven.
A6: We need to create an environment of yes and step out on the branch with teachers when they want to try something new for kids.
Both from the questions and the participants! https://t.co/SekGZedLOF
Am I the only one picking up some really amazing educator follows tonight?
I see what you are doing :)
as a first year teacher, this is my main goal.To observe as many ppl I can & to never stop growing
Taking care of you, brother. https://t.co/JhlPDueKaf
Am I the only one picking up some really amazing educator follows tonight?
I see what you are doing :)
A6 Let 2 Ss study for Math test in my writing class the other day. Respected their need. Got lots of work from them the next day.
need to get the ss buy in.
A6: Im trying to encourage risk taking, innovation, trying new things. Some things nonnegotiable, some are not. Flexibility
If you continue to have that mindset you will never stop growing. Good for you!
Love that ".333333....." metaphor! So true. Which is why teaching truly is an ever-evolving art form.
A6 Working on implementing the inquiry process to help Ss succeed in school and in life.
A6 Our Rm = relationships & respect where ?s are welcomed & risks are taken. Ss are engaged when they're empowered & feel safe
We have so many compliant students. I'm not sure everyone knows what engaged looks like at our school.
agreed from both ss and colleague standpoint.
Love it!
https://t.co/uumWasPmW9
A6 Our Rm = relationships & respect where ?s are welcomed & risks are taken. Ss are engaged when they're empowered & feel safe
to piggy back..."Trust adults and ..."
This is tremendous, Clint. Once that comfort level and social capital is built up, sky is the limit.
Right?!!!
So glad we're aren't the only ones.
https://t.co/yq6uJHxkrZ
We have so many compliant students. I'm not sure everyone knows what engaged looks like at our school.
I agree. And to what end? What's the goal?
A6 incorp. movemnt as much as possible; utilizing project approach & inquiry-based learning; strong relationships; tech; dev. app.
YES. So so so so important.
This is so important at all levels. When kids feel safe, they will risk it all for you
I had an amazing student leading the class moment this week. It's so cool to see seven year olds doing this!
A6: choice, gamification, frequent movement breaks, whole brain teaching..
Amen. Looking for commitment over compliance.
We are just about ready for our last question!
Truth! It can be tough to get out of a routine, especially when you're either too scared or too comfortable.
A6: Let Ss and Ts drive questions and learning. Yes, there is content, but help support them make meaning of it.
That's a great resource! Really helps clarify the difference.
Q6 trends: NO busy work! Involve Ss, PBL, empower learners, REFLECT, & choice, relationships, discussion, take risks!
Q7: As we approach a new week, what is one thing that you will do differently to positively impact your students or staff?
I start the year with Engineering in science. It helps the students understand the importance of risk taking.
There are SO many fantastically awesome EDUs on tonight. FOLLOW, FOLLOW, FOLLOW!
Agree. We have to keep in mind the Ss that we are responsible for. It's their future and their world.
A7: cooking Bradley Burgers this Friday as a thank you to my amazing staff. https://t.co/cIqodznYAU
Q7: As we approach a new week, what is one thing that you will do differently to positively impact your students or staff?
my Ss are as well took a lot of work to get them to be comfortable w movement and mine are young!
And I’m an English teacher :) Had help from to get it mathematically correct.
It can be esp.tough if the leaders (admin, Ts, etc.) in the building have trouble differentiating the two as well!
A7: 1) Throw out the seating charts 2) Write positive notes each day to Ss or Colleagues 3) Continue to celebrate the positive!
A7 Tomorrow is an inservice day for us, so I'll keep a positive attitude :)
: I WILL publically recognize at least one of my Ts who is positively impacing our school.
Toss some gas on that fire :)
A7: Taking time to meet 1:1 with students about their progress + how I can help them more.
A7 Continue building relationships -new to building so excited for P/T conferences following week I get to meet the families.
A7: show that when you fail you still learn and learn how to succeed
You weren't very compliant on this one, Derek, we only asked for one! Good for you, great stuff! https://t.co/sRJSTC4tvq
A7: 1) Throw out the seating charts 2) Write positive notes each day to Ss or Colleagues 3) Continue to celebrate the positive!
A7: Authentic engagement. Sometimes routines and meetings make me just appear compliant. I want to be authentically engaged.
A7: Greet each and every student on Monday morning, and my 4th grade team members.
What's even worse is that some still don't even realize that there is a difference.
Yes! It is important to have routines & mngmnt, but the end goal must be for learning, not solely compliance
A7: Listen, listen, listen
A7: Sometimes routines and meetings make me just appear compliant. I want to be authentically engaged when coaching.
A7 When students are back, I'll try to connect with them throughout the class period. Little connections build big relationships
and when we model risk taking and how vulnerability is ok https://t.co/FmFa695fXD
This is so important at all levels. When kids feel safe, they will risk it all for you
A7: Im working with Ts to . Dont race to Fri to be done, race to Mon to make a difference and help again.
A7- Invite rather than push. When you push, there is push back. Less likely to happen with an meaningful & sincere invite
Great point! It can be a slow process even for Ss if it's not what they are used to.
A7: Teach to the 99 not the 1. has shown me that the norm isn't necessarily the best norm. I plan on forming a new line
A7: My goal for the year is learn to become a better listener. I will listen to learn instead of listening to respond.
love it. Authenticity makes a big difference.
Arguably the best demonstration I have seen. Amazing. https://t.co/BFLoywdvRV
A7- Invite rather than push. When you push, there is push back. Less likely to happen with an meaningful & sincere invite
A7 Mindset - what can I do new each day to engage each Ss & adjust my lessons to reach all learners?
A7: Positive focus, every day, every T and every S. Showing the community the great work our school is doing!
love this!! ❤️Make a dif on mon cuz you dk the impact you'll have on your ss. great point! 😁
A7: be mindful of when routines need to be switched up. Surprise my Ss with something new
I've been building in time for reflection this year. It is so important and I've already seen so much growth from it!
Fantastic point Penny! We must model our school's after our best people, not the B3's!
Celebrate successes and continue to promote a positive culture and climate. Keep making connections with teachers and students.
A7 I second this! “The greatest compliment you can give ANYONE is to let them know that you listened.” https://t.co/XpvwsVXKNF
A7: Listen, listen, listen
A7: Collecting leveled Texts and creating digital guided reading manuals for schools I support. Purposeful interventions.
A7. Collect perception survey data aligned to our vision. If we aren't delivering on our promise we need to make some changes
A7: Sharing the learning with Ts! And working hard to connect our parents to our mission & finding time to share a few high fives
Missed the chat tonight working on this paper! So pissed! Sorry guys...will read tweets tonight or in AM!
Q7 trends: Recognize greatness, postive notes, celebrate, empower, build relationships, fail forward, take risks, LISTEN, reflect
A7 Celebrate successes and continue to promote a positive culture and climate. Keep making connections with teachers and students.
A7 Remember that my Ss are kids! Keep my high expectations, but weave in extra patience and understanding.
Thx for hosting another fantastic .
Bring your crew over to at the top of the hour and let's keep it going!
This chat missed you tonight!
All good, Salome! Good to meet you this weekend. Keep inspiring, my man. https://t.co/3Xi3gI4XPD
Missed the chat tonight working on this paper! So pissed! Sorry guys...will read tweets tonight or in AM!
Thank you for another awesome , folks! Picked up some great new members to follow. Keep being amazing & working hard for Ss.
I will give positive feedback to each student to help build their self confidence in our engineering lesson.
Agreed. Our previous leadership did not emphasize the difference. New team is doing a lot of work to fix. https://t.co/xJPNdlTGCL
It can be esp.tough if the leaders (admin, Ts, etc.) in the building have trouble differentiating the two as well!
Hey - join this Thursday night at 8:00. We have 2010 Nat'l Teacher of the Year as our guest Moderator!
Thanks for sharing tonight on ! Love learning with you all and hearing your thoughts on What Great Educators Do Differently!
And remember that us 3rd year Ts have to stick together! =) https://t.co/N9uV6smJo1
A7 Remember that my Ss are kids! Keep my high expectations, but weave in extra patience and understanding.
A7: Make time to more personably acknowledge staff and students. https://t.co/IRnH6JIn1f
Q7: As we approach a new week, what is one thing that you will do differently to positively impact your students or staff?
Great topic tonight and even better EduAnswers. Thanks for leading us tonight.
Me too...if I couldn't sit near my friends, even at lunch.or talk in the hall.and where else do ppl walk around in lines?!
A7: Starting simple. Incorporating an Add On that showed me with Google Forms. Cleaning up my process.
Thanks to tonight's participants and and for co-moderating! Follow some new friends to grow your PLN!
I'm trying to understand that balance. If you find a magical formula, let me know!
A7 continue to focus on relationships. Spend more time in classrooms
A7) the learning comes from the mistakes - academic and otherwise. They wouldn't be kids if they didn't screw up :)
Thanks and for a great tonight. As always, it was inspiring and I am ready for a new week!
Thanks to and for moderating another fantastic ! We appreciate the work you do educators!
Thank you for joining us & sharing your thoughts on . It is always great learning with all of you.
