Welcome to #MOedchat! Tonight we’re talking #EdCampSTL and other types of non-traditional PD. Introduce yourself and share an awesome non-traditional professional learning event that you participated in recently.
I’m so excited that I get to join #moedchat tonight! Leigh, from Cape Girardeau!!! Lead Learner @CapeJeffTigers & consultant, motivational speaker & Ruckus Causer with @mrsbranchk@womenruckus!!!
Lance, k-4 principal in Jackson. We had a pick your own PD for elem Ts on our last PD Day. Teachers told me their plan, how it will benefit Ss, and what they hoped to gain. #Moedchat
Hey #MOEdChat! I'm Sadie - Innovation Specialist in @MehlvilleSD and also on the #EdCampSTL planning team!
I just went to #FETC, and while it is a "traditional" conference, so many of the connections I made were outside of sessions - expo hall, lunches, events, etc.
Shannon from IL- Middle School Special Education- I run an Apps Group with teachers in my building. We meet twice a month- first time to review an app, second time to see how everyone is using it. #moedchat
Michelle, from STL - English teacher and ed tech specialist turned grad school student, substitute teacher, and SAHM - want to stay in the game, though! #Moedchat#iheartedcampstl
Good evening, Nicole from Lee's Summit. I'm a 6th grade teacher and aspiring admin. I am gearing up to help put on an EdCamp for the first time at a leadership event. #Moedchat
Q1 If you've attended an Edcamp, what do you feel is the best part of the Edcamp model? If you're unfamiliar, what questions do you have about the EdCamp model? #moedchat

My most recent non-tradtitional PD experience was a book tasting during our first PD day of the year - an idea I picked up from @4OClockFaculty! #MOedchat

A1: My favorite thing about the #EdCamp model is the freedom to lead your learning. Sessions are created by attendees *that day* and everything is really flexible.
#MOEdChat
A1 Best part of EdCamp is the connections. There isn't a preformed agenda from someone that is "in charge". You meet your needs and connect with other amazing and dedicated educators. #moedchat#EdCampSTL#LearningSTL
Q1
If you’ve attended an EdCamp, what do you feel is the best part of the EdCamp model?
If you’re unfamiliar, what questions do you have about the EdCamp model? #MOedchat
A1: Best part of #edcampstl is the flexibility and freedom - make your own session, use the rule of two feet, make it what you NEED and WANT it to be! #moedchat
A1- You get to be selfish... in a good way! You get the freedom to focus on what you're passionate about and engage in what you want to learn more about. #moedchat
A1) the best part of the EdCamp is the development of the session , just put down a question you have or a topic you want to learn about and roll from there. So much learning from these great sessions. #Moedchat#EdCampSTL
A1: The best thing about the EdCamp model IMO is that it is designed by educators for educators and not big box companies trying to sell a product #Moedchat
A1: I think the best thing is that it facilitates informal conversations which lead with connections. At formal traditional I would probably never contribute to the session or talk to my neighbors or trade contact info. But it happens often at edcamps! #MOEdChat
A1: It’s also based on personal decisions on what to learn. The focus of our EdD dissertation is personality in the professional development planning process so this is right up my alley #MOEdChat
A1: The best part of #edcampstl? ALL. OF. IT. I've had the best conversations with the most energetic educators who are in it for all the right reasons. I finally found my tribe. #moedchat
A1: #EdCampSTL saved my professional life! I was able to connect with other educators that were challenging the status quo, dreaming big, and SHARING it all! You are free to learn & teach at your own pace! It’s paradise! #Moedchat
Q1
If you’ve attended an EdCamp, what do you feel is the best part of the EdCamp model?
If you’re unfamiliar, what questions do you have about the EdCamp model? #MOedchat
A1: I ♥️ how EdCamps connect you with others and encourages participants to build a strong network of professionals. They’re informal, fun, and all about the participants. #MOEdChat#EdCampSTL#SpedcampSTL
Thanks! Each card is made by a student. It illustrates something that makes them happy....everything from friends & family to tacos & Netflix! #moedchat
So true! It so often seems that at larger conferences, the conversations are controlled by the presenter with not a lot of time to connect with others in the sessions. I think that is definitely starting to change though! #moedchat
A1 - My favorite is knowing the smartest people in the room, is the room. Knowing that people have amazing expertise to share and releasing that for others #moedchat
A1: As a educator you are in charge of your learning. You are able to see & experience sooooo many incredible things & PEOPLE!!! The energy is off the chain! #Moedchat
A1: I've never been, but I would say hearing other Ts' experiences and efforts giving things a try or perhaps putting a new twist on some things. #moedchat
Q1
If you’ve attended an EdCamp, what do you feel is the best part of the EdCamp model?
If you’re unfamiliar, what questions do you have about the EdCamp model? #MOedchat
A1 Best part of EdCamps is that people are there because they want to be. They are normally held on a Saturday. It proves that educators are learning all of the time! #moedchat
Q1
If you’ve attended an EdCamp, what do you feel is the best part of the EdCamp model?
If you’re unfamiliar, what questions do you have about the EdCamp model? #MOedchat
I think this brings up a great point. We so often immediately think of "tech" as topics. But, the beauty of #EdCamp is that the topics can be *anything* and aren't locked into a conference theme. #moedchat
A1 Best parts of edcamp model are 1. getting to attend session that interest ME and the rule of two feet and 2. connecting with other educators. #moedchat
Hopping on a little late. Business teacher from St. Louis.
A1: Went last year for the first time and felt energized and excited. I love the collaborative feel of the whole day. #moedchat
I think this brings up a great point. We so often immediately think of "tech" as topics. But, the beauty of #EdCamp is that the topics can be *anything* and aren't locked into a conference theme. #moedchat
A2: Don't be afraid to ask your questions. Also, don't be afraid to use the rule of two feet - if a session isn't meeting your needs, it's okay to get up and find another! (Hard to do though...) #MOedchat#EdCampSTL
It's the only way I can do conferences now. I attended a conference a few years ago that specifically stated NOT to get up in leave in the conference program and I about died.... and did it anyways. #ruleoftwofeet#moedchat
A2: I'm a pretty structured person, so my first #EdCamp experience wasn't great. I kind of didn't like it.
I would suggest to a first time attendee to go at #EdCampSTL with some things you'd like to learn *and* some things you'd like to share.
#MOedchat
A2 Successful edCamp=talking to people you don't know. It may be uncomfortable for us introverts (yes, I really am), but it is worth it.
Advice=if a session isn't what you thought it would be, go to another one. It is your time. Make it count! #MOedchat#EdCampSTL#LearningSTL
A2: A successful edcamp means letting learning happen. Yes engage in the day. Don't just sit and get, take part in conversation. Try new things/ideas. What doesn't seem to work for you can work w/ brainstorming from others. #moedchat#edcampstl
A2: Successful Edcamps need people willing to start a conversation. Participants also have to be ready to drive their own learning. First timers should be ready to soak it all in. The energy at Edcamps are always super positive and exciting! #MOEdChat#EdCampSTL#SpedcampSTL
A2. The collective collaboration is essential; it’s important not to hold back - if you have something to share then say it; take good notes as there will be lots of learning #Moedchat
Ugh. When you pay money to attend these conferences, you have to find things that work for you! Not being allowed to leave a session is totally unfair! #moedchat
A2: Be Brave. Go outside your bubble, where growth happens. I facilitated to a room of strangers my first edcamp, and was immediately hooked for life. #moedchat#edcampstl
A2: Don’t be intimidated to contribute. Don’t see a topic that interests you? Add it! Ask questions, share your story. We all have something to share. #moedchat
A-2 Being Open and Listening. Recognizing that there's wisdom and creativity in everyone. Be willing to find it! Also, share! You're awesome, share it with others! #moedchat#edcampSTL#learningSTL
A2: Volunteer info & contribute to a session, there isn’t a presenter and every voice is important. The smartest person in the room is the room! #Moedchat
A2: Don’t be intimidated to contribute. Don’t see a topic that interests you? Add it! Ask questions, share your story. We all have something to share. #moedchat
A2: The rule of 2 feet. Don't feel bad if you decide to leave a session. We are all adults and won't get offended if you bolt. You go where you need to go. Don't be afraid to share! #moedchat
I think that most of them being on Saturday can be difficult for me with my personal schedule. Saturdays are usually school days for my wife. At some point though! #Moedchat
A2 There are so many different sessions it might be overwhelming. Pick one, attend, and if it's not for you stand up and walk out. There is another session just down the hall. #Moedchat
I've found that the "willing to start a conversation" has helped people realize they actually like to present! And they've gone on to start presenting at district PD and conferences. #moedchat
Q2: What makes a successful Edcamp? YOU! Educators of all backgrounds and experiences connecting and learning from each other. It’s truly exhilarating #MOedchat
A2 I If you don't see what you like, make it a session. Someone told me they thought there was nothing for them. I told them they can create a session for themselves. #MOedchat
A3 Use the session notes and put your info on it. Sit with people you don't know for breakfast/lunch and strike up a conversation. Go to the "playground" and talk in the halls! Follow up with people. Join #MOedchat on a regular basis and follow @LearningSTL for more events.
A2) the best conversation or learning experience probably will not happen in a session, it is the conversations after, the ones that continue or the spontaneous ones at lunch or in a hall. #MoEdChat#EdCampSTL
A2: I am speculating. I'd say don't always listen to what everyone else says to do. Breakaway from any of your teaching buddies and go it alone. That's why some become cookie cutters. They follow cookie cutters. #moedchat
A2- Edcamp is a great PD to learn something new, but it's also a great PD to validate and share your thoughts about something in education. Don't be afraid to allow your two feet to take you to a session you know something about so you can share what you know. #moedchat

A-2 The rule of two feet. If it's not working for you, or you begin checking your email, LEAVE. Find a new place to plug in! #edchat#moedchat#learningSTL
Q3:
One of the biggest benefits of participating in a professional learning event is the opportunity to network with others. What do you do to make connections at an event, and continue connecting beyond the event? #MOedchat#EdCampSTL
A2) the best conversation or learning experience probably will not happen in a session, it is the conversations after, the ones that continue or the spontaneous ones at lunch or in a hall. #MoEdChat#EdCampSTL
A3: don't be afraid of taking a conversation into the common room and continuing the learning if something sparked your interest in a session. Networking and sharing common passions are the benchmarks of an #EdCamp#Moedchat
Be prepare to make new friends and build lasting friendships. Actually met @MattMurrie at my first #EdCampSTL and look at us now! #WhatIf EdCamp can change your world? #moedchat

Q3:
One of the biggest benefits of participating in a professional learning event is the opportunity to network with others. What do you do to make connections at an event, and continue connecting beyond the event? #MOedchat#EdCampSTL
A3: Twitter, Twitter, Twitter! Get handles, tweet what you're learning. Use the shared notes (and bookmark them to get back to them easily). #MOedchat#EdCampSTL
A3: Connect with people! Step outside of your comfort zone and meet new people. Share ideas, listen to others, and keep it positive even if you've been having a rough week. Exchange emails, twitter, instagram, whatever platform u use to connect. #moedchat#edcampstl
A3: This is where the power of social media comes in. It’s important to try and sit with people you don’t know. Try and join a conversation with someone new. Then, get their info...follow them on Twitter, FB, Insta...anything! #MOEdChat#EdCampSTL#SpedcampSTL
A3: At events post on twitter with the hashtag of a meet-up spot to introduce, reacquaint and have casual conversations that extend beyond content. Then continue on Twitter. #Moedchat
A3. It’s a time to introduce yourself to others and connect with them on SM. Share your passion with others so you can grow and learn w/ others. #Moedchat
We have some spaces specifically for this type of thing at #EdCampSTL this year! Nothing formal...just some spaces with seating so you don't have to stand around with backpacks! #moedchat

Q3:
One of the biggest benefits of participating in a professional learning event is the opportunity to network with others. What do you do to make connections at an event, and continue connecting beyond the event? #MOedchat#EdCampSTL
A3: Life is about relationships, and your career is the same. Strike up conversations with the people next to you in a session. Guaranteed you'll have something to talk about. #moedchat#edcampstl
One of my goals for #edcampstl this year is to use #GoogleKeep so that I can record, sort, and organize (and really learn the app in the process!). #moedchat
A3. Strike up conversations with those in the breakout sessions. Follow those I meet. Retweet what they tweet. Start @Voxer PLN groups. And .... #MOEdChat
A3: Life is about relationships, and your career is the same. Strike up conversations with the people next to you in a session. Guaranteed you'll have something to talk about. #moedchat#edcampstl
A-3 I take good notes and email myself contacts to follow up. I've never left #EdcampSTL without meeting amazing people and learning 5 - 10 new things. #moedchat#edchat
Q2. Advice for new Edcampers...it’s ok to be nervous. Just take your time and find a session that fits what you need. And if you can’t find that session, make it! I’ll be there to help! #MOedchat
I have solved the world's problems of podcasting in the classroom in a hallway conversation following a session. (Holding my backpack!) #Moedchat#edcamp
A3: Seems like a simple answer, but Twitter. It keeps me connected after events, which leads to more events, more learning, more growing, more people to follow. #moedchat
A3 As far as my experience goes, I try to meet someone new at every conference, just start talking, see what they do and it will most likely lead to connections with them #Moedchat
A3: contribute to the hashtag on Twitter. I usually do a sketchnote of the keynote or a session I liked and post it or post out good quotes or resources #moedchat
A3 I work to force my normally intoverted self when around people I don't know to talk to others. I love meeting new librarians and tech people so I force myself of that comfort zone. #MOedchat
Making these connections is so important! Met @awall777 at a #metcpd event, couple years down the road he told me about a job open at his school and now I’m working at his school. You never know what doors will open through those connections. #moedchat

A3 Get on Twitter, and make sure you have a name tag with your Twitter handle on it. It's amazing what you can learn in the Twitterverse from your friends. #Moedchat
A4: I think we still struggle with having no *expert* in the room sometimes, and so no one knows where to start the conversation. I'm still working on how to fix this.
Any suggestions?!
#MOEdChat#EdCampSTL
Q3: Tweetdeck to keep track of the hashtags and trends. Photos of twitter handles and then taking some time after sessions to connect on twitter, engage and then put down the phone and face to face connect #Moedchat
A4. It’s continually improving but if there is a way to share the conversations/notes with others who could not attend that would be awesome. #moedchat
A3 Share learning on @Twitter Add to session notes and check out Twitter handles of people who add to notes. Introduce yourself to people you follow on Twitter Face to Face is so much fun! #moedchat
Q3:
One of the biggest benefits of participating in a professional learning event is the opportunity to network with others. What do you do to make connections at an event, and continue connecting beyond the event? #MOedchat#EdCampSTL
A4: The more voices we can bring in the better. Pre-service, retired, students, community members, parents... The whole village needs to be there. #moedchat#edcampstl
A4: I’m really interested in getting more organized backchanneling or virtual input to be available for people who want to participate from abroad. It’d be cool to pull up a session board from a distant EdCamp & and participate online #MOEdChat#EdCampSTL#SpedcampSTL
A4 Break lunch into shifts and hold back some of the different lunch types (pizza, subs, etc) so those choices are still there. Parking is always difficult too, but not sure how to fix that one unless there are shuttles from another school. #MOedchat
Q3: I always come in with positive attitude and a goal to meet at least one new person. If others come with that same attitude, I usually exceed that goal! #MOedchat
We have over 100 school districts represented at #edcampstl this year! Think of all the perspectives, ideas, and resources that will be shared! #moedchat
A4: I can only speculate once again, but I would say for those who cannot go, do a scheduled live video feed. That way one session can be experienced, but the whole thing is there for those who physically attend. Offer a piece to everyone, but only a piece. #moedchat
I’ve invited my admin personally and not sure if they’re coming? I even told them I was on the planning team. Now they did send and email out to staff inviting them on my behalf. #edcampstl#moedchat
Q5:
Has your school or district implemented non-traditional professional learning models, like EdCamp, badging, etc.? Tell us about your experiences.
#MOedchat#EdCampSTL
A4: i wonder if we could get them when they are young...i.e. in educator programs. I had no idea this existed. It really has opened my eyes to many organizations and groups that I rely on heavily for PD. #MOedchat
Q5 Has your school or district implemented non-traditional professional learning models, like Edcamp, badging, etc.? Tell us about your experiences. #moedchat
A5 I ran an EdCamp for our new teachers one year and invited other teachers. It was well received (probably should do it again)! #MOedchat#EdCampSTL#LearningSTL
A5: Our building has done several #personalizedPD days. Teachers Offer up what they are planning to learn more about and others can come join in. #moedchat
A5: Several schools in our district have implemented badging, and it's a lot of fun! Lots of great participation! We've also had a district-wide EdCamp and have several schools that still run their own smaller versions on PD days. #WSDlearns#MOedchat#EdCampSTL
A4 I LOVE the edcamp model, however, understand that it's not for everyone. I like that there seem to be more focused/specialized edcamps popping up. I think there is a need for subject area, grade specific, etc., edcamps. #moedchat
My admin and I have talked about doing an #EdCamp day for students. Giving them some personalized learning
We've done Edcamp's for our PD for one of our PD days the last two years. Always a teacher favorite! #personalizedlearning#moedchat
A5- I started an Apps group last year in my school that meets twice a month before school. We first meet to learn about an app - different presenters each time. Then we meet to see how everyone is using that app in their classroom to gain more ideas. It’s been so fun! #MoEdChat
A5: St. Charles SD and Francis Howell are partnering for EdCamp St. Charles. June 5 8am-12pm. I’ll post registration later. We’d love to have more schools represented! #MoEdChat
Q5:
Has your school or district implemented non-traditional professional learning models, like EdCamp, badging, etc.? Tell us about your experiences.
#MOedchat#EdCampSTL
A5: We have started offering personalized PD to make it more meaningful for teachers. We offer different levels of credit based on the deliverables. #moedchat
Q5 Has your school or district implemented non-traditional professional learning models, like Edcamp, badging, etc.? Tell us about your experiences. #moedchat
A5: Something I’d like to work towards is getting my teachers into each other’s classrooms. There is so much value in visiting your colleagues, rather than just seeing them in meetings on PD days. #Moedchat
A5 We have also had "choose your own PD" where Ts turn in their own plans prior to a PD day. If we expect Ts to differentiate for students, we should DI for them. #MOedchat#EdCampSTL#LearningSTL
A5 we have had Ed Camps and personalized PD. I also utilize staff to present PD instead of faculty meetings/ I just email the necessary info. #moedchat

A5- My district did an Edcamp during one of our teacher inservice days last year. I loved it and was able to connect with others in the district. #MoEdChat
I think things are changing though, @TedHiff and @ghartman have brought in their classes to #moedchat in the past and I think the trend is starting to pick up speed

A5 #JR2Proud took a scheduled PD day off the calendar & Ts schedule it themselves, flex PD day. Ts can learn after school, during breaks, or summer in place of that day. Teachers get to make the PD fit their needs. #EdCampSTL would count towards it. #MOedchat#LearningSTL

I like the idea of inviting pre-service AND retired educators! Retired voice definitely missing. Students and community members & parents! This would be an epic edcamp! Love, love, love this idea! #moedchat
A4: The more voices we can bring in the better. Pre-service, retired, students, community members, parents... The whole village needs to be there. #moedchat#edcampstl
I won a chromebook at Chromecamp. You bet u stay until the end. I don't like leaving until the end of the credits at the movies just in case there's a secret scene 😉. #moedchat#swag
A4. Coming in late. I love seeing Ss voices, panels, etc. participate side by side w/edu. Keeps us honest w/Design-thinking-> user-centric approach. #moedchat

Q6:
The rest of the chat will be EdCamp style! Throw out a topic or question that YOU would like to discuss, and start a conversation! #MOedchat#EdCampSTL
A5: we also build in an EdCamp model each year for our Library Media Specialist PD. They enjoy the time to learn from each other on topics relevant to their role. #moedchat
I do see more and more aspiring teachers, like @mrhalbert2, on Twitter connecting with others which is awesome! Do they know about #EdCampSTL as well? Could there be a tailored #edcamp for pre-teachers and veteran teachers? #thinkingoutloud#moedchat

A5: Once you adopt #edcamp empowerment PD model; its hard to go back to trad PD! Hosting #Edcampstl was the best thing we did at GCAA! Easy to replicate thereafter. #moedchat
A5 We've done 3 #EdcampArchSTL which were awesome! We've also done some mandatory 'modified edcamps' in our region. Mandatory are hard. People who don't want to be there suck the energy out of the room. #moedchat
Q5:
Has your school or district implemented non-traditional professional learning models, like EdCamp, badging, etc.? Tell us about your experiences.

In the beginning, it was hard to get local EDU programs to share info with their students. That is changing, thank goodness! Pre-service Ts deserve a chance to attend. #moedchat
