Just to get a quick feeling about your comfort with SEL, please let us know what you know about this concept.
Good evening everyone! Christine, fourth grade teacher in Polson, eager to learn more about SEL.
I am looking to learn more. :)
SEL is acquiring and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills to understand and manage emotions
SEL helps set and achieve positive goals, show empathy for others, maintain positive relationships, make responsible decisions
Is this similar to applying the Zones of Regulations?
Q1: Do you feel that SEL has a place in the hallways of our schools?
SEL.. no real training, other than life training! a T I had in HS saved me using connections and empathy.
A1: Yes, I believe we need to intentionally teach our students how to apply positive SEL.
They have the same desire. SEL programs work on 5 competencies that we will look at
A1) SEL should have a front row seat in every classroom and hallway
I agree! This should be Tier 1 instruction.
I cannot agree more . We have neglected helping students and staff with this under NCLB.
I agree SEL should be Tier 1 instruction but think an effective program would be built just like RTI.
Student outcomes related to SEL programs include improved Positive Social Behavior, Reduced problem behavior
T need training though on how to incorporate this and do it well!
SEL could be a component of MBI/PBIS.
reduced emotional distress, and improved academic performance.
That is exactly how our school will be implementing next year.
This is the foundation for good instruction to happen! https://t.co/ueLPbgXi3b
reduced emotional distress, and improved academic performance.
One argument of SEL in schools is exactly that Our teachers have not come out of college with this traiing
A1 Staff realizing more than just outside character of student; caring, understanding the student.
Program outcomes can be increased knowledge and skills, supportive learning environment, and improved attitudes
Q2: SEL has five interrelated sets of competencies. Why are they so important to our students that walk in our halls?
summer institute for Flathead/Mission valley?!??!
A1 Staff realizing more than just outside character of student; caring, understanding the student.
Self-Awareness: ability to accurately recognize one’s emotions and thoughts and their influence on behavior
Self-Management: ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations
Social awareness: ability to take the perspective of an empathize with others from diverse backgrounds and cultures
Relationship Skills: ability to establish and maintain healthy and rewarding relationships with diverse individuals and groups
A2: The 5 competencies of SEL support students in "doing school" and "life".
Responsible decision-making: ability to make constructive and respectful choices about personal behavior and social interactions.
A2) they r imp. so Ss can move past what is trying to break them & learn..and better their situation through education
Q3: What are ways that schools can incorporate SEL learning into our schools?
A3: School wide focus on SEL and intentional lesson plans for each class.
Success of the program depends on the quality of implementation, infusing into teaching practices, infuse into academic curriculum
Create policies and organizational structures that support emotional development, directly teaching skills free-standing lessons
Most effective strategies include four elements: Sequenced, Active, Focused, Explicit (SAFE)
I would be glad to be part of a summer institute. Also, join SAM Admin Institute in July. Will have this focus!!!
Q4: Why are social and emotional issues, such as lack of motivation and poor student behavior, seen as problems in schools.
Leadership having a great game plan through collaborative PLCs with how infusing this program will happen. https://t.co/b93ijPfVeG

I apologize I have to leave the chat early tonight. SEL is essential!
Thanks for joining Natalie!!!
Increase emotional distress, higher depression, anxiety, stress, and social withdrawal
A4) Ts do not have skills to solve these problems, not like math or reading deficiencies. Some are afraid of their own emotions..
I completely agree with this. More often us adults are not emotionally stable. https://t.co/SiUC4g8btp

SEL is one way to attack Mental Health in our schools. It is more of a preventative for all students.
S's basic needs have to be met. If thoughts are on safety - at home or school, then how can a S be motivated to learn Algebra?
Mental Health issues block a student's path to successful, meaningful learning - The need for SEL!! https://t.co/2w1gvKCZHh

Schools have to be trained in so many areas...can't be experts in everything...
As well as a meaningful life!! https://t.co/g8AGrxwLRg

Guidance on how to handle tough situations, ongoing.. not just one day at beg. of yr.
Agreed! However, if we don't meet their basic needs; we won't accomplish much more. https://t.co/nhWymocJTF

That is why we need to think about how a SEL program is designed. Need all Tier levels covered. https://t.co/YkwChh3bau

The survey from CASEL found that a major benefit of SEL is preparing students for the workforce. https://t.co/g8AGrxwLRg

Q5: Thinking past high school, how can SEL skills benefit our students. Is SEL really worth looking into?
That is the trick, on going work that isn't a one stop shop...
Prepare students for workforce, become better citizens, get to and through college, achievement in academic coursework
SEL - provides a more comfortable climate, improves academic achievement and better prepares Ss for life. https://t.co/RzRkEvauJk

SEL incorporates many hot educational topics right now. Mindfulness, mindset, trauma. Can we pull all of this into one program
