A1: I give a brief rundown of what I've noticed that day & what I'd like to see accomplished, knowing that as soon as I mention the tank, they're going to get up & go look. What are you gonna do? #scitlap
A1 We have about 45 minute classes, I usually start with a little intro and then we do something active. We end with a few minutes for organizing, but my favorite days are when a multi-day project happens and no instructions needed! #scitlap
A2: We build projects both separately and as groups. Because I'm math, we cook together. On my BDay I serve Dodger Dogs (no longer a fan though), canned chili & frito pies. This is a longstanding tradition. #scitlap
A2 I think it is important to have some talking time. How are you? Did you win your game? How's your puppy, etc. Relationships enhance learning! That's what Rita says!! #scitlap
One thing my lovies have been struggling with is connecting our hands on to the standard. They love the labs, but when its test time they struggle. #scitlap
A2: I greet them every morning and we have a kindness rock that gets passed around. I try to do as many STEM challenges as I can and we play TONS of games. #scitlap
@HowardKiyuna Agree as well. I've had several conversations about doing their part and not getting caught up in the fun. You still gotta do the work. #scitlap@Ancestry

A3 This is a goal I am working towards. I think I add phenomena to my lessons, but not as an anchor. I really want to work to use as a hook rather than something they might already know what happens. #scitlap
A3: I do I Notice, I Wonders often to let the students get their brains thinking. I need to do some more attention grabbers, but I feel like they are hard to find for my standards. Or I am just looking in the wrong places. #scitlap
A3 (again) Next up for me is magnetism. I bet I can find a cool something to try. I remember a demo I did a long time ago with a neodymium magnet and a copper pipe. #scitlap
For my glowstick phenomena they know what happens. It glows. But their concept of why is very undefined. When you have them model the phenomena you realize how naive their conceptual framework is. #scitlap
A4 I don't have a good source, but was wondering if NGSS has something. @KRScienceLady might be able to point us in the right direction for anchoring phenomena resources. #scitlap
A5 Earlier this year, I learned that UDL (Universal Design for Learning), came from architecture and building buildings accessible by everyone. I love looking at education from this perspective. #scitlap
A5 I have been wanting to research this more. I am sure I do it, but not sure. I record lessons, post online, record test. Do hands on lessons and try to let the kids show their learning in various ways. #scitlap
A5 Today, at a PD, we learned about using something called Snap and Read to help students who struggle with reading and writing, but it is available to all of our students. #scitlap
I think it is one of those things that is just best practice. Good teachers do it naturally, but always nice to identify it and make it work even better. #scitlap
Yes, it looks cool, and if all kids have access, less stigma of being "different".#scitlap
It has a cost, my district purchased it, but no idea how much or if it has a free version.
A6 Not being one to one and my students not having access at home. I want to do more, but want all students to use it. I feel like when I use tech in group the savy ones take over and the others don't get to grow. #scitlap
A6 Same as @MrsHugginsClass We have a slew of devices, but we are not 1:1 YET. I see there being a HUGE need to move in this direction. Even if there were class sets. We use them so much! #scitlap
A6 Another issue is having so many log ins.........We need something like Clever, or another way to minimize this. Kids catch on, but parents really struggle! #scitlap
A7 Joining #scitlap late. Too many twitter chats going on tonight. I think Ss should always take notes on paper. If technology don't change the learning experience, its not needed. Digital worksheets are not a proper use of technology. #scitlap
I am asking this question, becuase I gave kids a choice today. Same quiz, on paper, or on the computer. I would say 80% picked paper - was so surprised! My own kids (12 and 15 agreed). #scitlap
A7 Honestly, it's not always about what kids want; it's about what fosters learning to most. Most labs for me are done initially on paper and then transferred to digital. #scitlap
Q7 I use a good mix of both. I think for test and things the kids like the paper back (or they often perform better). When it comes to projects it often depends on the student. Some prefer the poster paper and others prefer the Chromebook. #scitlap
A7 With Google Classroom, it feels good to use less paper, but we can't fully abandon. The act of writing, and the tactile, less rushed feeling of paper is still important in learning. Everything in moderation! #scitlap
I think we often assume our kids are a tech savvy generation, and they are in some cases, but they also struggle trying new things. Its "easier" to do the poster then learn how to create a Google Slide. #scitlap
My quizzes and tests are on @castlelearning because the item analysis is awesome and Ss can get 1/2 credit on Qs. I know immediately if Ss need help etc. That and I don't want to grade paper versions of tests. #scitlap
100% yes. They might be digital natives, but there is a ton of tech stuff they are kinda horiible at. I try to teach them to problem solve and not just yell "the computer hates me" or "it won't let me on". #scitlap
All I know is that Ss used to REFUSE to take tests. They'd start and then get anxious, then nothing. Since switching to online tests, 2nd try at .5 credit. They know if they get them wrong or right. No refusals. If they start doing poorly I can intervene. #scitlap
Well, I think that was the last question! I had a great time tonight. I followed new people, got some new resources, and of course, great conversations. Thanks, all! #scitlap
I have this conversation scheduled for tomorrow! Most did very well today, but some did not, and I love that they want to improve. But what went wrong today is an important discussion! #scitlap
Yes. Part of it is frustrating because they didn't do their part and study/ask questions, but always remind myself...what's the goal learning or punishment. #scitlap
