What’s up everyone?!?! I’m Andrew from SoCal. 4th grade teacher, GATE teacher, and game designer. Excited to be here with all of you! Glad to be part of such an awesome group. #XPLAP (Not sure where I was!?)
Eric K4STEAM from MI (attempting to stay away, missing my #xplap friends) - Wasn't til college when I saw this; didn't appreciate it as much as I did when I saw it again many years later.
I'm sure it is, but have just never seen it. I have a couple others - much more recent - that you'd be surprised I've never seen nor read the books. It is not for lack of trying, justc annot seem to get into them. #XPLAP
Thanks Dwight… Funny you just tweeted this… I am watching your supreme court video again right now… Just wanted to see your editing again… Thought it was good and wanted to see it again. #XPLAP

It looks like a WWII movie to me, but I couldn’t say which one. If I saw it in school, I’d guess World History. But it’s a big guess! #XPLAP Oh, yeah. I’m Shauna. Singer. Online Teacher. MS ELA and K-8 Tech.
Hey all, I'm Dwight, I teach 7th grade social studies. I have not seen the film in question... I don't think at least. #xplap When it comes to epic endings, I love Inception for the questions it leaves, and Blazing Saddles for its ridiculousness.
A1. Keeping up the momentum has been hard this year. However, the end goal of my game is to achieve Ultimate Survivor. Today, I celebrated the 6 students (from all grade levels) that achieved this rank and earned blog immunity :) #XPLAP
A1: I haven't yet gone gamified, but keeping excitement levels up usually means a bit more extrinsic motivation. Little rewards for keeping students focused on the prize. We've still got another full month of school in NY. #xplap
A1: Nobody gets left behind or forgotten. School isn’t like the game of Risk where players get eliminated one by one. Always have something more to do, to look forward to, until the end of the last day. #XPLAP
A1 I re-emphasize where everyone is at and what is at stake. I introduced a few new things as well. Kids are also getting pretty hefty powers now. #XPLAP
A1 I have a High Stakes test. Interestingly I found that the students were motivated when thinking of the test as a Boss Fight. Rather, the test creators as the Bosses. The goal of a MC test is to trick students into the wrong answer. This was motivating. #XPLAP
A1: I have added a bit more challenges to my game in the end and added some new items that are super powerful… Here is one video that shows a challenge: https://t.co/KDvLWRiHxp#XPLAP
A1: I give students opportunities to create new cards. Last week, we had a brainstorming activity where students got to express their ideas for new cards. Students had to elaborate on what the card did, sketch a sample design of the card, and then present it to the class. #XPLAP
Simply adding more xp to assignments which, in turn, makes more level up. This leads to more items and such. Also having cumulative boss battles from stuff way back. Lastly, using wheeldecide for random wheel spins full of items and loot #xplap
A1: Love all the creativity in keeping students engaged till the end. I think continued opportunities for new learning and end of the year celebrations are important #XPLAP
Awesome… In my game I amp up all the xp at the end… Quests worth more, items gained more powerful… Because there is less time left, everything is worth more in the end. #XPLAP
A2: I handed back quizzes today students weren't too happy with their performance on. I always remind them learning is the goal, and provide opportunities for them to show me they know what it was all about. #xplap
A2: I start adding puzzles and "pick a random question" from a pile I have that are worth exhorbitant amounts of points for no good reason. The one that was picked up a couple days ago that makes me smile was "If the phone is ringing, who is in trouble?" #XPLAP
A2: Throughout the game, stall the leaders, so that the gap is not as large (Thinking #AmazingRace how they get all teams to wait for the same flight or opening time) #xplap
My feeling is that state only cares about high stakes test classes. That is where they pay attention so I'm ok with the test... We had a 92%pass rate... #xplap
A2: Hmmm... yes. My end of the year classroom activities were more team (class) building than anything else. We would do mini-challenges with prizes. But we would work together and class-wide rewards. I know winning is important, but community is more important. Yes? #XPLAP
A2 Not sure how to do this. I have some teams that have just not done much of anything *all year* and others that got into the game immediately and excelled. #XPLAP
A2: Great question! I’ve created game cards that level the playing field. For example, I have a Point Reset in my game. When used, the PR resets the points for everyone, including the person who activited it. This helps ensure that the game is always balanced and fun! #XPLAP
a3) thought of having them make a final in Kahoot to battle me. Pick any type of question from the whole year and see if the can defeat me, did it with one unit last year Ss like it a lot (especially those who won) #xplap
I have provide challenges for each unit. Ss are aware of each other's progress through @GooseChaseEDU which motivates them to get their low-scoring butts moving before the new unit (scoring opportunity) begins. #xplap
A3: Quick design challenges or bringing out items you used for teaching and allowing them to simply explore with them. You can also have them create a memory book. #XPLAP
I thought of making my character (Commander Helios) wind up secretly being evil and the students had to defeat me the last day to be able to leave school for the summer! #xplap
A3 cont: I also have them do a web where they have to connect themselves to all others in the class through what they did. For example Diana worked on ___ with Jose, who filmed a video with Alexa, and so on. #XPLAP
A3: I love opportunities which allow for special moments for students to shine. Tomorrow we're doing Bill of Rights Bingo, with opportunities for students to think about a situation and determine the right or freedom being used & the amendment it belongs to. #xplap
A3: I have to plan the whole year over thesummer, which requires a lot of foresight. For end of the year, I like to include reflection. Maybe the challenge could be to write a funny reflection on one lesson using a limited amount of characters (like in a tweet). #XPLAP
A3: I’m thinking it might be cool to include myself as a player in the game. I’ll have a chance to earn points and play the game with students. The challenge would be to beat me instead of playing against the other students. I think students would get a kick out of that. #XPLAP
A3 Had Ss record podcasts for the first time last week. I'd never had Ss do one before. We all learned. Not sure what else I can squeeze in before the end of the year. #XPLAP
A3: last year we did a huge Olympics event with an opening ceremony, made up countries and flags and amazingly cheesy events. Didn’t have time to set it up this year but I wish we had. #xplap
Cool! Love that #WellPlayed was watched by you and your students today. It was a fun interview with @GimKit and I am really impressed by his drive and advice he gives us all! #XPLAP
A3: As learning outcomes have grown from simple to complex throughout the year, so should challenges. In #driversed, a unit1 challenge is to gps the meeting location of drive#1. A unit 10 challenge asks for a video of the student hooking up jumper cables #xplap
A4: Jumping in late tonight! Hi folks! Scavenger hunts that take them to other classrooms/Ts or @breakoutEDU games are ideal for creating "buzz" and involving others! #XPLAP
A4 All I have to say is "special guest" or "breakout" and their excitement is peaked. That and if we do something cool the snaps go out from my period 2. Word spreads. #XPLAP
A4: Not really a part of our game, but rather part of our program. We will have our fourth Student Exhibition Night tomorrow night. Presenting to the community, board, a couple media outlets, etc. Real backbone of what we do. #XPLAP
Ones that send them to the Art teacher/room to learn about or decipher an art selection, or to the Science department where they have to solve some sort of clue before moving on... #XPLAP
A4(brick and mortar): End of the year assembly, school wide classroom walkthroughs or art fair. Switch teachers for different subjects and leave sister class work on display. Share student created videos on class website or blog. #XPLAP
A4: I'm teaching a course on storytelling next year, and can't wait to have local radio journalists, ad agency folks, branding professionals, etc in to help students with their stories & projects. #xplaphttps://t.co/3EU24y3C4f
A4: I think it’s all about making connections and allowing people to see how much fun our class is having. This can be shared through media or outher outlets. At times, I can’t believe how much fun we are having while learning! #XPLAP
A3:I did a week long Olympic Game last Feb. It's a lot of work but it was great! This time of the year, I've them work on group projects, like voicethread, and randomly generated ones. They'll create presentations, videos, and make fun memorable moments in the process :) #xplap
A5: As mentioned erlier tonight, I celebrated the maximum rank with the earning of blog immunity. These students sported capes during the period (if they wished) and entered to graduation music. #XPLAP
Hi, #xplap! Lurking and making dinner again, but super glad to catch the tale end on this chat about epic endings! I'm Nancy and I teach media/journalism at a Bay Area college.
@HSwartz25 this makes me so happy. I am really glad you tried out #Gamification in your class this year. Thanks for sharing it all with us here. Can’t wait to meet you this summer! #XPLAP
A4 Online: Exemplary work to the online newspaper, brag on students on the school Facebook page, collect awesome work as examples for the next course shell, make online discussions a place to share art, music, discoveries, and growth. Require replying to other students. #XPLAP
I've done a film fest, too, using student made videos. What fun. I ahdn't thought about creating Ratzel Awards. #xplap . Some students cr8ed intro movies to promo upcoming festival. That worked great.
Dang, looks like I missed a good #XPLAP chat tonight. I’ll have to dig through it tomorrow. I need plenty of inspiration for this summer as my game feels like it’s grinding to a halt this semester... 😕
A5: I celebrate by giving my students options. Typically, when a team wins, after a month of gameplay, they get to select a prize. They almost always select the prize of having lunch with me though. It’s a small reward that goes a long way and is meaningful. #XPLAP
A5: We look through the activity roll of pictures together like a video yearbook...oh, then there's the $100.00 cash prize for the highest scoring team #xplap
A5: This is my first year ending a game so it's a little rocky but I needed to tie the storyline together. Today & tomorrow we are recharging and re-entering the time machine that sent us to 1377. Then I will announce final leaderboards and those the Double S is promoting #XPLAP
A6: Posting or even utilizing the learning artifacts w/ future Ss giving credit to S creators of those artifacts will further validate students' learning journey #xplap
A6: On our e-portfolios, the students every year write a "How to survive the ___ grade". ATM my 8th graders are reading (and cringing about) what they wrote back in 5th (or 6th), especially since the first week they read what the previous classes had written on week 1. #XPLAP
I am hoping to encourage the next year's teachers to pick up the gauntlet. There are only a handful of days left and my students are still going strong. #xplap
a6) our graduating 8th graders decorate a ceiling tile that is placed in the hallway. I want to start a Wall of Heroes type of thing. Also wouldn't mind having something from the winning person as a trophy type of thing (maybe a "moon footprint") #xplap
A6: I’ll be starting a passion project next week. The project will be connected to long-term goals for students. They’ll get to explore various careers while developing an identify of what / who they want to be. #XPLAP
Love the ideas and think it is great that you are being raw here and saying it is rocky… The important thing is that you are growing and so is your game. Keep it up! #XPLAP
Q3: I'm not really sure this counts, but last semester, my students could purchase spins on the digital wheel of fortune at the end. There were perks they could get, but 1 "prize" was to hear me do an insane witch's laugh. I'm pretty sure they aren't going to forget that. #xplap
Have something similar with handprints from our alumni on the side of the building. My own kids attended, and I always smile when I walk past theirs :) #XPLAP
I would love to hear ideas on how this looks from an administrator's perspective. How can we be more "game like" with teachers. Our theme this next year is Briarcliff All Star...I think there would be a perfect fit with this... #XPLAP
I like tieing the two together! Maybe next year I can have my kids flipgrid their plans for the future, and then at the end respond to themselves with how they did. #XPLAP
Q2: I may have gotten this from WellPlayed at some point, but students could buy "killer cards" this time. When they played it, they could steal someone else's points that day. 1/2 #xplap
A6 As a school we are making goods and holding a market to help out families within the building that have had medical issues. My student's store is themed . . .Star Wars. One item they are making is a coloring book with their own illustrations. I will keep one in my room. #xplap
A6 - I plan to make a Hall of Fame of Heroes where I have the most prominent avatars for everyone to look at. And for everyone to look forward to. #Xplap
I kind of failed at really getting that going this semester, but I can see from the few times it happened that it will be great in the future. 2/2 #xplap
I'm definitely loving the journey! I love the kid's investment in this process as well. In fact they are the ones who catch the holes in the game right away. I thank them and tell them we are growing and learning together! #xplap
A6: I'll have the students write 3 things on a post it note that I will be displaying on the wall for the next batch: 1) one thing they've learned in 4th grade, 2) encouragement/suggestions/notes for next class, 3) one fun thing they love. #xplap
A4: I have several ideas to create excitement and challenges for staff at the start of the year using a game sort of framework. staff meeting that has "9 innings" Goose Chase scavenger hunt....I need more ideas... #XPLAP
A7: That is why I blog. At the end of each year, and especially as I've gamified, I write at least one piece about how it went and how I plan to improve for next year. (A year in review series). Watch for it by mid june ;) #XPLAP
A5: I do not feel I made enough of the victories this time round. (It's been a busy semester.) But winners got certain perks like getting 3 minutes with their textbook during the final exam. #xplap
I like to take some time each week to reflect on how the year went. I write my thoughts on my lesson plans for that week. I can't wait to go back and look at all of them and plan for the future. #XPLAP
A7: I love this post from @MrRoughton, "Always 1.0" https://t.co/IS6b6b34Nt Always being mindful & reflecting on what we can do to improve whatever it is we do for next time. #xplap
A7: Use data! Whether it's quantitative or qualitative, just make sure feedback is driving the play of the game. Also, get feedback from students. Ask them what they liked, didn’t like, etc. The ideas they come up with can lead to epic game-infused learning. #XPLAP
A7: I use my prep for my goals meeting w/ my principal as an opportunity for this. I try to reflect on my goals in a positive way, but I also have a more honest conversation with myself at the same time, making a list of things I want to improve for tweak. #xplap
