Hey, hey friends!! It’s time for #EDpiper! Tonight we’ll be dipping our forks into a few books. 🍽 I’m Jessica, elem AP at @BrookAveElem in Waco, TX and your moderator for tonight!
"Having the freedom to fail is important to innovation. But even more important to the process are traits of resiliency and grit." via @gcouros#EDpiper
A1: I see observant and reflective as characteristics I am learning to exemplify in current roles...watching, learning, reflecting, adjusting, listening...all part of the process. Still need to work on risk-taking and empathy #edpiper
A1- I find myself creating spaces for my students to take risks and create. I love to provide authentic learning environments for us to use as a key component of collaboration. I need to reflect more on my day. Adjusting my teaching style to fit the needs of my kids. #EDpiper
R1: I would say the one that I need to work on is being reflective. I do think about what to do differently; however, I think my Ss should be reflective of what we are doing and provide me with their feedback more. #EDpiper
I think in the admin world you have to be observant, always watching and listening to see problems before they may arise. I’m always working on being more reflective, taking the time to sit and think about all the things that happen! #edpiper
R1: I think I do a good job identifying the problem and taking the risk. I don’t care if it falls flat, but I want to create a realistic opportunity for my Ss. #EDpiper
A1.empathyhas always been mystrong area. My life hasn’t always been easy so it’s easy to relate to a student who is struggling with life. I have always struggled with networking. I liked seclusion of my classroom and wanted my concentration there. Now I’m stepping out! #EDpiper
I have! Well, it’s more through conversation and graphing. Building these relationships with students is a must. Especially in the primary grades! Trust will make or break your class! #edpiper
A2: I am absolutely pumped for our #outdoorclassroom we are building from scratch...getting kids back to nature is so vital in our digital society #EDpiper
A2: Creating adventures in learning lead to personalizing the experiences for the learners and the teachers. We all know that providing rich experiences to draw from provide deeper levels of learning for all involved...creating opportunities for Ss to move beyond walls #edpiper
R1: I’m also always looking for new ways that I can help Ss be creative, be it #Makerspace, tech apps, or traditional projects. I’m also looking at ways to integrate multiple subjects into my course content. #EDpiper
A2: A proven learning adventure we started last year ... @breakoutEDU These adventures provided a sense of competition and teamwork while supporting our culture across a first-year campus #edpiper
A2- My goal is to provide adventures daily! I ask the students and let them lead. They are the ones who spark the creative side of the classroom #EDpiper
A2 Our campus is exploring PBLs this year. Judy York from @Region12 has done a phenomenal job of gently leading teachers down this path. Several of our teams have implemented full blow PBLs through this process, and the students have loved it! #edpiper
A2: When we read “Night” (a holocaust memoir), we give students the dimensions of the cattle cars used to transport ppl 80 per car in the beginning and eventually 100 per car bc of how thin they’ve become. It’s powerful to see Ss comprehending that painful truth #EDpiper
I have spoken with my admin and tech/eCoach leaders about partnerships with local industries about identifying needs in our community and creating #PBL opportunities that are interdisciplinary #EDpiper
A2: Student choice for product creation = ownership of learning; current event and case studies = relevancy of the content; want to incorporate more choice menus and reflective activities to further ensure student ownership #EDpiper
Our upcoming standards hit procedural text, so I am planning on have students use our maker space to build or use something on their own by following the manual aka procedural text. They can struggle to make sense of this type of text but appreciate their product. #EDpiper
A2: I have parents that are developing their own leadership skills and their desire to share their passions with our Ss. One parent is leading a Saturday School focusing on Poetry for our 3rd-5th Graders. Our Ss struggle with poetry, so this helps refine their skills. #EDpiper
A2: @CastlemanCreek is really promoting our Makerspace this year called #theForge getting our students to expand their learning with technology, hands-on learning, and creative thinking! #adventureawaits#EDpiper
A2: One of our 5th grade teachers has turned social studies into a current event discussion led by students after watching student news. I have heard some of the deepest discussion and thinking when visiting during this time, they love it! #edpiper
R2: mass transit in Indy is a major discussion. I had partnered with our president of our city/county council in creating an opportunity for Ss to create a model for this plan that would be presented to city stakeholders. Ss would create models of the plan. #EDpiper
My #oneword this year is Intentional. I need to make sure I am Intentional about creating content, publishing, and contributing to this field instead of always consuming. #EDpiper
How do you guys work this into your schedule? We have a cart that teachers check out, but I'm interested in other ideas. I would love to come see your set up sometimes; I live right down the street. :) #EDpiper

Our campus is teaching growth mindset. Just small moments throughout the day that you teach having a growth mindset is having an impact on my students. I think as they continue to get older and starting in K, we will see a huge impact on their mindset.#ccegrows
#aware am I doing, seeing, and being all I can for my family, coworkers, and students! Also, being aware on what is working/not working! #EDpiper#oneword
My #oneword this year is Intentional. I need to make sure I am Intentional about creating content, publishing, and contributing to this field instead of always consuming. #EDpiper
A2. I think that adventures for me are just unique experiences. My Ss will stand on desks and run through halls while still carrying on adult debates about real world issues. Kids remember unique adventures and things that will directly affect them. #EDpiper
Our upcoming standards hit procedural text, so I am planning on have students use our maker space to build or use something on their own by following the manual aka procedural text. They can struggle to make sense of this type of text but appreciate their product. #EDpiper
A3: I would have to say more hands on technology coaching in class, mini-lessons, and coaching through difficult parent/teacher student conversations. #EDpiper
We have an area in our library that is our #makerspace and our librarian is FANTASTIC in helping organize/facilitate lessons to help! We have an online signup that T can use and S can go in groups or as a class! #EDpiper
How do you guys work this into your schedule? We have a cart that teachers check out, but I'm interested in other ideas. I would love to come see your set up sometimes; I live right down the street. :) #EDpiper
a3 I would like to read more about the science of how we learn & would like to job shadow to learn more about parallel thought processes in the workplace. #EDpiper
A3: Time! Time for reflecting, for planning, for meeting and talking with peers, more time to practice implementing tech and resources, time to share the joys of the job! #EDpiper
R3: I also like to have a differentiated opportunity for PD. IT ISNT ONE SIZE FITS ALL. I want to move at my speed, not that determined by people I am placed in a room with because we teach the same content or have similar experience. #EDpiper
A3 I would like for there to more continuity and application in the with PD. I feel as though they give you a fire hydrant worth of information and then fail to give support and the best ways to implement #edpiper#watsonunplugged
How do you guys work this into your schedule? We have a cart that teachers check out, but I'm interested in other ideas. I would love to come see your set up sometimes; I live right down the street. :) #EDpiper
A3: Playlist is filled with hands on and engaging experiences. Then some truth bombs to tie it all up and remind Ts it’s all about the students and relationships #edpiper
A4: I'd remove subject area boundaries, i.e. 90 minutes for math, 120 minutes for reading...this isn't real world...the real world is not compartmentalized #EDpiper
A3: time for planning with like teachers and build lessons with thought. Utilizing #iPlan days to work with your content team and really break down the TEKS. #edpiper
R4: multi curricular classroom with teachers working toward one authentic goal for our community. We teach our curricula through the project and work together with Ss to help them solve the problem. Thy present their authentic solution to an authentic audience #EDpiper
A4: Impacting students with situations where they are given choice instead of a step by step process of how to complete every assignment or project. #edpiper#watsonunplugged
A3: For me, Twitter, Conferences, Book Studies. I have my own #PersonalizedPD night, and I make sure that I am doing/reading/ researching/creating something for my own personal growth. It has been essential to my learning and growing as a Principal. #EDpiper
Technology technology technology. Sometimes having SO many options is scary/overwhelming. Trying to slowly add more items for my S because they love it! #EDpiper
Our campus is teaching growth mindset. Just small moments throughout the day that you teach having a growth mindset is having an impact on my students. I think as they continue to get older and starting in K, we will see a huge impact on their mindset.#ccegrows
A4 I would love to turn the way our district does PD on its head. We need to focus on personal learning and choice. What stops me is not being in the position to make it happen at a district level, but I'm trying to facilitate it more on campus level. #edpiper
A4: I think I would love to use more time and methods to coach kiddos up in reading, but sometimes I don't want to make other educators feel like I am crazy or trying to make things more difficult. #EDpiper
A4: I would love to incorporate more discussions about the world around us...social, political, cultural, etc... Everything just seems so taboo these days and you never know who could get offended (more parental than students) but I feel great convos are being missed #EDpiper
R4: Space and traditional classroom setup is part of what is keeping me from hitting this. I think there is interest, I need data to support this #EDpiper
#EDpiper
A4: I would also like more time with our leaders on campus to ask the "why" behind what we do? I would love more time to think tank with administrators and other thought leaders without any repercussions for not falling in line. #edpiper#watsonunplugged
I cannot wait to visit with you in a couple weeks. It seems we have a lot to learn from one another. My school is so excited about you all coming. #EDpiper
A2. I think that adventures for me are just unique experiences. My Ss will stand on desks and run through halls while still carrying on adult debates about real world issues. Kids remember unique adventures and things that will directly affect them. #EDpiper
A4: It’s not so much the #fear factor as the #time factor, but I would LOVE to do so much more and dig so much deeper into my curriculum. I feel like I am doing so many things all at once that a lot of the #teks just get a glancing blow #EDpiper
A4: I would change the traditional classroom layout, adding multiage classrooms, flexible seating, fostering more choice and voice for the students. #EDpiper
A4. I want to teach life lessons. Kids need to know what a credit score is, how to file taxes, how to change a tire. Young men should learn that you walk in front of a woman down the stairs and behind her when you go up in case she falls. #adulting#Gentleman#EDpiper
A3: I would have to say more hands on technology coaching in class, mini-lessons, and coaching through difficult parent/teacher student conversations. #EDpiper
A5: I believe vulnerability with my students goes a very long way. A close second would be a willingness to engage in the "why" are we completing this assignment or activity. #edpiper
A5: Try to always be open minded and up for giving new things a try...but also speak my mind when it's something I'm passionate about! Passion + willingness to learn/try = 🔥
#EDpiper
A5 @empowernextgen Just like you mentioned, the why is how we keep the fire going! The "why" will also spark things up when the fire is getting weak! #edpiper
A5: Being as visible as possible at all times and always upbeat. Energy trickles down from the top and I don’t ever want it to be a question to any student, teacher, or parent if I’m happy to be there and excited for the day! #edpiper
We absolutely are not teaching enough of these life skills in school. Where do you expect parents responsibility falls on teaching these skills as well? #EDpiper
A6 I hope to try many different ideas and watch what happens, when I take risks I hope to inspire others to do the same. If it doesn’t work, there’s always tomorrow. Both students and teachers need to have a risk taker to model.#EDpiper
A:5 I think relationships are key to lighting and maintaining a fire in both. I know I am more motivated when we work as a team, in the classroom or a grade-level. I want to try more and be more innovative. #EDpiper
By participating in PLN like this! My school also supports collaboration regardless of the grade levels! @DrWillisCCE helped me with this on Friday! 4th grade & Kinder working together! #EDpiper
We are lucky to have teachers who will take risks and learn from the processes you go through when getting out of the comfort zone. We are all learners, and that makes me feel incredible as a campus leader. #EDpiper
This is one of the reasons I believe married couples SHOULD work in the same building #modelreallife#modelmarriage For five years, we worked three doors apart and for some Ss we were the only marriage they saw on a daily basis @RileyWorld33#EDpiper

A4: I think I would love to use more time and methods to coach kiddos up in reading, but sometimes I don't want to make other educators feel like I am crazy or trying to make things more difficult. #EDpiper
A6: Empowered Ss own their learning - they find and solve problems. They effectively follow and lead. They collaborate FOR critical thinking and problem solving #edpiper
@MsLangeEDU This is why I love our vertical schedule! For 3/9 weeks our Ss move in vertical teams! So cool to see them work with big and little buddies. #edpiper
R6: engaged students will follow the rules and expectations for what the teacher has established. Empowered students are pushing the boundaries and taking risks for their learning. They feel that their success can be measured by making mistakes. #EDpiper
A4: It’s not so much the #fear factor as the #time factor, but I would LOVE to do so much more and dig so much deeper into my curriculum. I feel like I am doing so many things all at once that a lot of the #teks just get a glancing blow #EDpiper
A6: Engaged Ss are engaged in the activities we plan...empowered Ss are driving the learning they have planned..there is an underlying premise of passion behind the learning #EDpiper
A5: I am lucky to work with so many encouragers. I don't feel like I have to light the fire. I have teachers and staff who keep the flame burning for others to see. #BeALight#CCEPride#CCEGrows#EDpiper
A6 Engaged students work intently and empowered students feel strength in learning and they know they have he power to impact the world today not just in the future. Empowered teachers could lead to empowered students (at least in theory)#EDpiper
Who has the control of "how" they are learning is the main difference. A student can be engaged but not empowered. If a student is empowered then they will engage in the lesson or activity by choosing how to acquire the information needed. #EDpiper#watsonunplugged

A6 Engaged Ss work hard and can still be problems solvers. Empowered Ss take risks! They are the ones who are not afraid to fail and have deeper learning because of it! #edpiper
A:6 I believe the do influence each other. I would say that if an activity is fun any student will engage in that activity. However, an empowered student will engage in learning experiences despite their appeal because they are seeking growth in knowledge or skills. #EDpiper
A1: I feel like I excel in the empathy department. It comes so naturally, but I could definitely work on resilience. I am an overthinker at times and have a hard time bouncing back when I am discouraged. #EDpiper
R6: I want a student who isn’t afraid to break the rules when it comes to learning. It’s not about doing it the same ole way it’s always been done. #EDpiper
A6: Absolutely empowered teachers create empowered students bc they push them out of their comfort zones and force them to create and take charge of their own learning. #edpiper

A6: Earlier tonight, I read @gcouros’ comparison between consuming and creating in #InnovatorsMindset. I wonder if that’s a helpful framework through which to respond to this question. #edpiper
The only book on this list I haven't read yet is "Culturize" but it's on my shelf waiting; trying to learn more about K-2 learning to read (stepping out of my comfort zone) #edpiper
I believe that deep down in the administrator's hearts that they want to give Ts permission to dream, but somewhere along the way maybe bureaucracy or regulations got in the way....I don't know either. #EDpiper#watsonunplugged
There are too many educators that are afraid to change. Let’s look at it, does it work now? If no, then what says it will today, tomorrow, anytime in the future? Quit beating the dead horse. #Edpiper
Our campus is on the IR list so I know we are under a lot of scrutiny. Sometimes it's hard to balance what will be best long term with "get us off this list!" #EDpiper
A1: I feel like I excel in the empathy department. It comes so naturally, but I could definitely work on resilience. I am an overthinker at times and have a hard time bouncing back when I am discouraged. #EDpiper
If you haven’t read #InnovatorsMindset, you need to do it NOW. It is the best ed book I’ve read. And there are some other great books too. @gcouros is very thought provoking in this book. #EDpiper
A6: Engaged Ss are vessels, taking it all in and fueling the lesson. Empowered Ss are taking it all in and then applying it in their lives, thinking and creating. Ss are inspired by Ts who are empowered, living what they teach. #EDpiper
I think it is all wrapped up in a leader's belief system. If an admin. trusts and believes in the true power of a great teacher, then he/she will give the teacher the autonomy they deserve, which includes supporting their dreams. #ThisIsCCE#ccepride#EDpiper
I believe that deep down in the administrator's hearts that they want to give Ts permission to dream, but somewhere along the way maybe bureaucracy or regulations got in the way....I don't know either. #EDpiper#watsonunplugged
Yes! I have connected with all of these author's at one point or another. I have loved each one of these books! Thanks. @Owl_b_TorresEdu for the great discussion!
