Morning, #edugladiators! John from DC here. High school instructional coach and English teacher. Proud to represent @OConnellHS and the newly graduated Class of 2018!
A1) #blendedlearning takes a traditional class while part of that time is for students to work online AT THEIR PACE.#blendedlearning can take many forms--small group--collaborative--personalized online instruction--work to fill gaps in learning #EduGladiators#BLinAction
A1) a blended classroom is a mix of online/digitial learning and f2f learning. 2 me: looks like Ss working on multiple items at the same time, I am seated at table with a group learning with them. #EduGladiators.
A1: I think of the Flipped Classroom. I have had mixed results in this as tech access for rural kids can be spotty. I am looking at how best to integrated learning through tech and without it in the classroom in a meaningful way. #edugladiators
A1: Blended Learning is where students are learning at their own pace and choosing some of their own learning paths and styles to learn (video, text, etc.) #EduGladiators
A1: When teachers consider the needs of students and implement learning opportunities that include traditional and technological formats. #edugladiators

A1 Blended learning is a mix of the traditional in-class, "brick and mortar" as called, with online, out of class components, Ss have control of time, pace, path #edugladiators
A1 Blended learning is a combination of digital/other resources to engage students in their learning in ways that can't be done without the tech. It's a powerful way to differentiate and ensure that every student is learning and is successful! #edugladiators
Awesome! The storm developed just east of us, so missed most of it. I'm from Valentine...drove thru Neligh this week to go to NNNC STI in Norfolk #edugladiators
A1. Seamless integration of digital tech & traditional classroom activity. Using the SAMR model, tech should act like a digital prosthetic, forging new connections & allowing students the opportunity to redefine tasks that would previously have been impossible. #edugladiators
A1: blending learning is something similar to the 3D leadership model we’ve been working on: https://t.co/MFoOw1YbQr
Leaders develop face to face (1st dimension)
Leaders develop digitally (2nd)
Leaders can integrate both and know when to use them (3rd)
#satchat
Now that graphic is amazing. Never has so much been communicated so conveniently. Thank you @CristinaDajero , I'm so going to save that one for a future showing.#edugladiators

A1: it is using all the tools at our disposal to meet Ss where they are and put them on a trajectory to reach their potential as learners. #EduGladiators
A1: A blended learning environment allows students to use tech to take control of their learning in & out of the classroom. Reinforces Ts role of being a guide on the side #edugladiators
A1: to me blended learning is creatively using technology to meet the needs of individual students. The tchnology piece can help guide students on their own paths or free me up to create f2f small group instruction. #EduGladiators
#EduGladiators a1 Blended learning is a process of having online and offline tasks, with a mix of collaborative and solo work. Teachers become more a "guide at the side" for students.
A2) #blendedlearning personalizes work for S's and allows them to work @ their pace. What #blendedlearning also does it allows teachers individualize work to meet specific skills for S's needs. Allowing S's to do the learning NOT the teacher #EduGladiators#BLinAction
A2) Blended learning puts the Ss in charge. They can go back, rewatch, research, reread, rework, redo, relearn when they need. The Ss can also explore, expand and enhance. The teacher is in the room as a coach and facilitator. The teacher is not a director. #EduGladiators
A1 Blended learning is a combination of face to face interactions and digital opportunities that allows Ts to truly differentiate learning #EduGladiators
Yes! Even the tiniest of adjustments can change their whole trajectory over time. Tech allows the teacher to adjust instruction in real time, gives voice/choice to the learner, and powerfully motivates the learner as they see their growth and progress. #edugladiators
A2 I create opps for Ss to learn using digital tools, asynchronous lessons, and also use stations in my classroom, Ss lead and I facilitate #edugladiators
A1 Blended learning is a combination of digital/other resources to engage students in their learning in ways that can't be done without the tech. It's a powerful way to differentiate and ensure that every student is learning and is successful! #edugladiators
A2: A blended learning classroom gives kids the chance to shine on the stage they are most comfortable. Traditional is all about fitting a box, blended is about building a stage. #edugladiators
A1. Blended learning is using both traditional educational practices & technology. My doctorate was blended learning which meant it was 70% online and 30% traditional on campus learning. It met the needs of working educators. #EduGladiators
A2 Students have CHOICES of tools, pacing, topic, how they demonstrate their learning, etc. We are motivated to work and learn more when we have autonomy combined with structures/accountability. #edugladiators
A2: Ts must know their Ss in order to provide choices that will interest, inspire, and motivate them to learn. If Ts provide Ss with the opportunity to share their voice, then Ss will be more invested in the learning as well. It’s all about knowing your Ss!!!! #edugladiators

A2 blended learning allows students to take control of the classroom instead of teacher led classrooms. Prepares them for the real world. #EduGladiators
A2. One of my favorite blended activities is what I call #QRBreakIN - think old school centers as a team relay race, almost like a REVERSE escape room. Student groups compete to solve puzzles asynchronously using tech & traditional tools! #EduGladiatorshttps://t.co/9YB7J1lCpw
A1 Blended learning is a combination of digital/other resources to engage students in their learning in ways that can't be done without the tech. It's a powerful way to differentiate and ensure that every student is learning and is successful! #edugladiators
A2: Blended learning allows Ss to have a variety of platforms with which to showcase their work. Relinquishing control and allowing them to take the lead will slow for talents to be discovered! #EduGladiators
A2) Ss in my classroom for social studies are leading at their own pace in a blended learning environment with a hyperdoc right now! Trying to integrate tech more in a meaningful and independent way #EduGladiators
A2: BL frees me up to float around the room and facilitate/teach individual students. I love using screencastify to create videos to allow me to do this. #edugladiators

Relationships are so important! Blended learning is NOT putting kids in front of a screen all day as an online babysitter doing whatever. #edugladiators

A1: Blended learning is using tech to enhance student learning inside and outside of the classroom. Tech is used to "illuminate" student learning!
#EduGladiators
Agree with this, but this year I also became aware of some digital fatigue and the need for some students to periodically disconnect from the digital. #EduGladiators
A2: Because the goal of teaching & learnig. Is not a standardized test but to create innovative critical thinkers, our strategies must evolve as #EduGladiators to reflect that. As Ts/Ldrs we can’t be scared to change NOW & not wait until we have conquered all tech & apps.
A3)I like to pick a skill to work on for every unit--then group S's based on what gaps in that skill need filled--this allows learning right where the S's need it to be, meeting them where they are! The @NWEA Learning contin. give great data to do this #EduGladiators#BLinAction

A3: Listen to your Ss and be open to their suggestions. If a student is a beautiful artist and can explain their art as a response why not let them do that over writing an essay? If a student wants to build an interactive assignment online or a pop up book why not? #edugladiators

A2: student at the centre by students working at their own pace and on tasks that suit them/curating of resources that allow students to choose and taking the teacher from the board at front #edugladiators

A3) I took @Bethany_Petty advise and worked to Flip my Flip with #hyperdocs I am sold on using these. It helps personalize learning and increase inquire in my classroom. There is some front end work, but worth it in the long game. #EduGladiators
Yes! We need to begin with the end in mind. We don’t want to create a society like Wall-E where we are behind screens all day. Our Ss need to engage face to face as well! https://t.co/MFoOw1YbQr#edugladiators
Can I get an AMEN! We'll never conquer all the tech & apps. We have to create a vision and a plan that allows our Ts & Ss to focus on learning. #edugladiators

A2. It allows Ss to be more proactive in their learning & prepares them for future learning. I also feel that it can encourage metacognition as well. #edugladiators
A2: blended learning allows me to put learning experiences more in the hands of my students. I loosen my grip on the reins, and become a "guide on the side" instead of the "sage on the stage" which allows me to focus on providing individualized instruction! #EduGladiators
A3: You must know your students and what they already know, struggle with, are passionate about, need in order to be successful. You can’t differentiate or individualize instruction effectively without knowing those answers. #edugladiators

A3: I love using @classcraftgame quests to set up learning paths for students. Also, just a lot of choices within quests that allow students to choose topics, pacing, #edugladiators
A3 I find using Choice Boards students have an opportunity to choose a response type that best suits them. I'm free to wander around and check on how things are going, monitor their pace etc. #edugladiators
Nothing can replace a caring teacher 1:1 with a student! However, tech allows the teacher to see strengths/weaknesses in real time so that the teacher can skillfully make instructional decisions to more effectively help a student learn. #edugladiators
So true, too many times Blended learning is seen as just computer time, but its not! Get in front of students who need skills met and build relationship!
A3: relationship, relationship, and guess what...... relationships. Without building relationships your curriculum will falter in the long run. #edugladiators
Aargh - we've been generally standardized-test free (except for 12th grade), but the govt just announced that in 2020 3rd, 6th, and 9th grades will begin to have standardized tests. I hope we can ignore them & continue to teach the way we do. #edugladiators
A3: For me it has started by having many and persistent F2F conversations with students to work through what possibilities for learning and productivity might be best for them. #edugladiators
A3: You have to start by building relationships with your Ss. Knowing them and building trust so that you are able to offer constructive comments and support on their learning. #EduGladiators

A3: Using a blended learning approach, SS become critical thinkers, independent learners, problem solvers, collaborators, global communicators, and innovators. Thus, SS learn in a variety of ways with each child excelling and learning at an individual pace. #EduGladiators
A4 Yes, have used stations this year, diff tools and I could work with each group, re-teach as needed, and let Ss move at pace, make choices, worked really well #edugladiators
A4) #blendedlearning has helped me meet more S's needs. I use more of a station rotation/flex model where S's rotate daily/diff. days through groups. Small-individual-reading group-collab. group. Allows me to target S's skills/allow them to learn at their pace #EduGladiators
A4) Think PEDAGOGY first! What do you want the students to be able to do? Then, find the tool(s) that will make the learning transformational. #edugladiators
A3. We can’t be afraid to try new strategies with our students! Learning & growing together will build a safe risk/fail culture in your classroom & school! We have to be ready to JUMP first! Here’s a blog post I wrote about it... #EduGladiators
📚https://t.co/JbytaYttao
A3: the same way to differentiate without the blend, sitting down and talking to students. Focus what they can already do, not what they can't, and use tech as a the cherry on top to help students show what they know, not as the whole cake. #EDUGladiators

A3: I LOVE my in-class flip! This approach frees me up to provide more individualized instruction for my Ss. Ss work through instructional videos & activities at their own pace, I can monitor their progress, give effective feedback, & help where each S needs it! #EduGladiators
A4: we are fortunate to be a 1:1 school this year so our Ss ALL have access. Our 5th graders are able to take chrome books home nightly. Many of our other Ss have access to technology at home. Our division provides CB or LT to every MS & HS Ss to take home. #edugladiators

A4 #blendedlearning have used the station rotation model. Students usually do a research task, a literacy task, a creative task and finally a learning element; either from me or by a @edpuzzle video. #edugladiators
A3. You have to provide students a number of choices which maintains the rigor. Ss seem to respond better & will pick what interests them. #EduGladiators
I agree about the power of in-class flip. Students have the freedom to work on it outside of class, but with high schoolers who have jobs and games, it gives them freedom to to move at their own pace #EduGladiators
Blended learning allows so many possiblities for differentiation. Give students tools and let them produce. Tools are not built for consumption. #edugladiators

Thank you so much to @EduGladiators for allowing me to lead this conversation on a topic I'm passionate about! Blended learning has allowed my S's to flourish and I hope your students are having the same success #edugladiators
A4 I didn't really label what I'm doing as blended learning but I do use Choice Boards all the time, which enables differentiation to show what you know. #EduGladiators
Yes! They are already using technology in their personal lives. Show them how to blend things they know with what they have learned to make it personal. #edugladiators
A3: the same way to differentiate without the blend, sitting down and talking to students. Focus what they can already do, not what they can't, and use tech as a the cherry on top to help students show what they know, not as the whole cake. #EDUGladiators

I was also doing some things that I did not label until someone said I was "app-smashing" and using station rotations, a couple of years ago :) #edugladiators
Hey hold my seat, I am on my way over from #EduGladiators#leadupchat Kathy, instructional coach looking for a new assignment and looking forward to the NEW Normal!
Agreed. I've been there, too. Shiny tools and fun activities are meaningless without a solid pedagogy, and students figure that out after a while. #EduGladiators
Sometimes, though, we figure out the pedagogy for something new once we explore. Thinks it can work both ways. That is part of exploring to meet student needs. #EduGladiators
A4. As an AP, I would have to show all stakeholders the benefits of blended learning. I think some stakeholders feel that educators try things that sound good or is the next trend but produce questionable benefits. #EduGladiators
A3. Google Forms “RESPONSE VALIDATION” is a great digital gatekeeper. Lets you set minimum response lengths without anybody knowing how many characters are required. EXCELLENT (sneaky) tool for scaffolding - different students can be taken to different pages. #edugladiators
I do this too - never named it but "in-class flip" works. I love it. I started truly flipping my class when I wanted time to give more in-depth feedback. #edugladiatorshttps://t.co/cNQ30RmjkE
A4: Stay organized. I use a clipboard to jot notes about individual students. But doing this with #blendedlearning makes me feel much more connected with each student's learning, too! #EduGladiators
A4. Check out my class Google Sites home page! Constantly updated with photos, videos, unit specific menus, choice boards, side quests, and 40+ #gamification activity ideas. #edugladiatorshttps://t.co/IWJb9SWkv1
Great #EduGladiators chat this morning! Blended learning is my jam! I'm running a book study for my new book, Illluminate, starting on Monday. I'd love for you to join us! Contact me at bethany.illuminate@gmail.com for more info!!
This is awesome. In AP PLC this year, we talked a great deal about building on students’ strengths vs. their deficiencies in order to see growth in their learning. #EduGladiators
