Good evening! It is great to be a part of this chat. The list of inspirational educators is a long one, but I would say @DennisBisgaard1 and @growingupglobal to start. #globaledchat

Oh, how fantastic! Thrilled to have a future teacher here! Your perspective is important! Thank you for joining tonight, Philip! #highered#globaledchat#sparkempathy
Hi, I’m Aidan and I’m a pre-service teacher in Columbus, OH! I’m surrounded by educators that inspire me, especially my preservice cohort members (some of whom are currently with me!) #globaledchat
Hi! I'm Abby, a preservice teacher from Columbus, OH! So excited to discuss this important topic! @tchheartmind is someone who inspires me to connect with others around the world! #osussmce#globaledchat
A1: I think my definition is pretty textbook - understanding the feelings of other people - although I would add, especially those from backgrounds that are different from yours. #globaledchat#globaled
Welcome to #globaledchat! We’re thrilled to co-moderate tonight's chat with @hsingmaster and @JenWilliamsEdu on sparking empathy through global collaboration. Please introduce yourself and tag in three educators who inspire you to connect with others around the world.
A1: Empathy to me means understanding and respecting someones perspectives by listening and learning about what others are going through. #osussmce#globaledchat
A1: Empathy means being able to take on someone’s perspective. It’s an attempt to understand what someone is going through and to truly feel it and be there with them #ssvpln#globaledchat
I teach #Chinese and #japanese so empathy for me is, part of it anyhow, is understanding other cultures and the way others do things, there’s a rippling effect , we can connect so much now with digital tech and also travel #Globaledchat
A1 Empathy is being sensitive, aware, and experiencing what it is like to see the world through someone else's eyes other than mine. #globaledchat Empathy for me is about the deepest compassion and respect of another persons life, experiences, and stories. #globaledchat
A1: Empathy represents our most important human quality: the ability to relate to others and understand their perspectives. Empathy is the essence of the human experience and a fundamental pillar of social studies and language arts. #ssvpln#Globaledchat
I teach #Chinese and #japanese so empathy for me is, part of it anyhow, is understanding other cultures and the way others do things, there’s a rippling effect , we can connect so much now with digital tech and also travel #Globaledchat
A! Hey #globaledchat! I haven't dropped in for a while. Great to see Q1 about empathy, which is an essential element in forming connections in the classroom, community & beyond, allowing students to make meaningful connections to each other and to larger global issues.
Some people confuse these terms. This graphic really helps. Wonderful to use during a Morning Meeting with students - conversation starter. #globaledchat
A. Empathy is being able to understand someone else perspective. Deep listening is one of the most important pieces to being truly emphatic #ssvpln#globaledchat
A1 #GlobalEdChat
Empathy centers on relationships that are meaningful:
Authenticity.
Transparency.
Trust.
Rapport.
Listening.
Sharing.
Problem solving together.
A2: I think empathy activities can be creatively integrated into many other classroom projects - especially those focused on #globaled! But virtual connections do especially lend themselves to empathy. #globaledchat
A2: Absolutely, yes. I think that having difficult discussions and conversations about personal topics/ any content need to be grounded in a sense of empathy within the classroom community. #ssvpln#globaledchat
A2: Absolutely! More than just knowing content and skills, I want my students to come out of my classroom with a deeper awareness and understanding of the world. I want them to be good people. You can’t achieve any of that without an understanding of empathy #ssvpln#globaledchat
A2: we need to be intentional about teaching and modeling that which we value! Our collective future depends on the ability of our Ss to approach the most entrenched challenges with creativity and empathy! #globaledchat
A2: Yes and...there is no reason it can’t also be embedded within every part of the curriculum. It isn’t as if there is a certain part of the day when we need to be more empathetic. #globaledchat
#globaledchat
A2: One of the greatest skills a person can possess that leads to empathy is the ability to actively listen. With the help of @OutoftheBlocks1 I've learned all about ways to help my students with the "art of listening and the follow up question". Game changer.
Kate Jackson here from Prosper, Texas! A2: All students (all ages) need time to learn and experience empathy in multiple ways. They need to read it, discuss it, feel it from teachers, feel it from peers, and practice it toward others. #Globaledchat
A2: It is more important than ever to have instruction dedicated towards empathy. Not just talking about being empathetic, but modeling and setting examples is important. I hear some people say that empathy can't be learned. I disagree with that statement. #globaledchat
A2: Definitely, and many lessons on global themes will already have relevance to empathy. Not everyone grows up in an environment that values empathy. And if a teacher is inevitably going to hold some biases, they should at least be bias in favor of empathy. #ssvpln#Globaledchat
A2: Absolutely YES!!! Are Ss are often limited in their exposure to different people, cultures, views, etc. By creating opportunities for Ss to connect w/ others & learn about these differences, we are inspiring them to become more empathetic! 💙 @EmpaticoOrg#GlobalEdChat
A2. Absolutely! One of our roles as educators is to prepare students for the world, and how to interact with other people with kindness and empathy in mind is a good lesson to learn! #globaledchat
Q2: I do think it is important for students to get an understanding and build relationships with other students! Especially since empathy begins with being a good listener, utilizing this throughout your class is something that is beneficial to everyone. #globaledchat#osussmce
A2 This article provides some very real reasons why students need to practice empathy + plain old social skills. "... they no longer know “how to properly shake a hand or look somebody in the eye. They have to learn social skills later.”#globaledchathttps://t.co/7SiWSuxqU7
A2 #globaledchat I think it is important to create and develop a culture that is rich with opportunity and where kindness and empathy are ever present through my explicit modeling of all are welcome and all stories matter. @TeachSDGs is an opportunity to explore empathy.
A2 #globaledchat I think about how the skills we teach come up authentically through our daily interactions with Ss. When I see, notice an act of kindness, empathy I engage and invite conversation about what is/has happened. Raising awareness of where it exists in daily life.
Oh wow -- I've seen global collab spark empathy so many times. Here's one teacher's story that really blew me away: https://t.co/ZCSSJpxGVg#globaledchat
Having a knowledge of other cultures and areas around the world allows for students to be more compassionate and understanding of those around them. Just discussing, researching, and reading about cultures can spark more empathy for Ss! #globaledchat#osussmce
A3: My class embarked on a #globalcollaboration journey & was able to connect w/ all 50 states & 3 countries! We learned so much from the different people we connected w/ & it sparked empathy & great convos about similarities/differences! #GlobalEdChat
A3: Having a knowledge of other cultures and areas around the world allows for students to be more compassionate and understanding of those around them. Just discussing, researching, and reading about cultures can spark more empathy for Ss! #globaledchat#osussmce
A3. Schools I worked in students from all over the globe are present. Student show tons of empathy for others when they realize (almost as if a light bulb comes on) that the friend seated beside them doesn't have any understanding of the content being shared. #GlobalEdChat
A3 #globaledchat@empatico has been a great platform to connect globally. @participate is another platform that has given opportunity for me and my students to explore @teachsdgs and be inspired through what we learn and how to connect and make an impact locally.. globally..
A3: I have not yet seen global collaboration used in the classroom, due to focused content in US history, but i’d love to experience this and challenge my students to explore how people around the world live #ssvpln#globaledchat
#globaledchat
A3: Link local, regional, and global. Here, students locally impact SDG4, tutoring migrant kids. Link to a regional orphanage where they supply personalized audiobooks and MP3 players. Then globally support literacy projects in Kosovo and with @iReadInitiative
A3: I have had Ss raise $ and make loans via @Kiva for years. I love the idea that they are loans so Ss open their minds to their privilege and change their worldview. #globaledchat
A2: absolutely. Empathy stems from experience that leads to learning / understanding. It helps Ss in their future encounters in our amazingly diverse world. @EmpaticoOrg#Globaledchat
A3: I have seen it several different ways with Ss, but I’m happy to say that I’ve also seen it w/adults. I’m a part of the team developing a global network of schools @WhittleSchool and we see it among the teachers as we collectively build the curriculum together #globaledchat
A3: I’m very fortunate to be doing my student teaching at an international school, so in a sense there’s global collaboration all around. My Ss surprise me daily with how much empathy they have for complex topics in global issues #ssvpln#globaledchat
A1: Hi everyone, I teach in a small rural school, isolated culturally & geographically, in Australia. Empathy provides understanding and acceptance so that conflict/racism is less likely to occur. #Globaledchat
A3. We’ve talked about how some emotions transcend borders- no matter where my students are from they all experience joy, confusion, curiosity, etc. It’s led to a lot of great conversations! #osussmce#globaledchat
It's just as important for teachers to make these global connections, too, either by traveling or virtual exchange! These experiences can help them with facilitating their students' #globaled journeys. #emphathy#globaledchat
A4: Virtual exchange, when done well, requires teachers on each side to collaborate and plan for a high-quality experience for their students. This enhances empathy as they work together across challenges. #globaledchat
A3: In my classroom we highlight on student identity & diversity. I always make our warm up questions connected to the students personal life in order to connect schemes. Due to our strong classroom community we constantly collaborate by sharing personal stories 1/2 #globaledchat
A3: Still in the process of trying this, but each of our Modern World History students has a country of choice that they research every unit. Example, if the student has Korea, then during our terrorism unit, they write a short report of terrorism in Korea. #ssvpln#Globaledchat
A3: By connecting in real time, we can see what the rest of the world looks like, hear what they may sound like, note that we have similar passions despite different cultures. All of which provides empathy and understanding. #Globaledchat
A4 the ability to speak to and see people live who are different who have a different culture has the power to enrich lives & broaden & Change mindsets of T’s & S’s alike . #GlobalEdChat
A4: One thing that definitely occurs as result of global exchange is that you find out there are more similarities than differences. You start seeing the world as one unit with people and students who have similar dreams and hopes. #GlobalEdChat
A4 #globaledchat I think about how both synchronous and asynchronous tools offer ways to open windows to let the "air flow" so to speak. Students are excited to use the tools, but soon the tools melt away and become windows into another world. The world does not seem so big.
Yes! As a former English teacher, I will tell you the personal narrative writing experience is a powerful means of building bonds and trust in the classroom. What a great place to start building a sense of community and awareness of others. #GlobalEdChat
A4: virtual exchange, though I have not yet had the opportunity to do this, would be an awesome way to skype or FaceTime with a class of similar aged students in another nation. This would benefit both me and my students #globaledchat#ssvpln
A3: These personal stories are global due to the classrooms diversity. I know that it is not a major activity but everyday we learn more and more about different perspectives & walks of life simply by giving students the platform to share 2/2 #globaledchat#ssvpln
A4: I think it’s amazing that #globalcollaboration allows you to travel the world connecting w/ others from the comfort of your room! My Ss & I met so many amazing people and learned about different locations & cultures, all from these virtual exchanges! #globaledchat
A4. I don’t have a lot of experience with virtual exchange- but all of the information I learn about other cultures and societies just adds another layer to my understanding. The easiest way to learn is through experience! #osussmce#globaledchat
A4: I think for both teachers and students being able to have an understanding of different cultures and see a connection through education can be an enlightening and empowering realization for many. #osussmce#globaledchat
#globaledchat A4: I love @EmpaticoOrg & @participate & I'll use such opps to spark cultural comp. Still, also seek deeper opportunities for face to face cultural competency. I think for deepest empathy & understanding, we need 2 support empathy-driven experiential learning
A3: I think using #GridPals by @Flipgrid is a great way to connect with people from different walks of life. Talk to people who are different from yourself and learn their struggles and find a way to empathize and listen! #Globaledchat
Hey @EmpaticoOrg! I spent today making this collaborative world map display for everyone at #wedgwoodelem to showcase ALL the 🌎 connections they’ll make this year! (I just need ideas for a title.) Then we replicate this in our other SIX SCHOOLS! #SparkEmpathy#EmpaticoDistrict
A4: Students tend to be curious about each other - especially those in other countries. Global exchange enables them to lead their learning, extend their exposure to cultures, languages, accents. Prepares them for a global workforce and network #Globaledchat
A4: While I have no experience with virtual exchange in the classroom, I can figure that the greatest virtue of exchange (virtual or not) is the communication of ideas and the human experience. This exposure would benefit teachers and students alike. #ssvpln#globaledchat
A5: In our program, we’ve studied what it means to listen to hear, not listening to respond. Having meaningful communication and these listening skills help develop empathy #ssvpln#globaledchat
A5. I just love it when @edutopia shares articles that help guide our instruction to help students develop empathy. You might want to bookmark this one. #globaledchathttps://t.co/ZZ1r2nKGJF
A4: For teachers, I think it would give us even more experience and resources to share with our students in terms of global Ed. It would benefit students because they can interact with different perspectives #ssvpln#globaledchat
#globaledchat
A5: Skill number 1 of our "17 skills for 17 Goals" Student Leadership & Impact Program: Active Listening. It's the foundation of problem solving for the SDGs.
A5: People of all ages (students, teachers, husbands, etc) could benefit from reminders and role playing on how to listen and respond! Empathy can be learned at any age! #Globaledchat
A5: I remember discussing this in my @OSUSocStudies course we discussed Thich Nhat Hahn and compassionate and active listening. Because when we are "listening like that, you give that person a chance to suffer less." #osussmce#globaledchat
A5 #globaledchat It helps all of us develop skills about how to listen consciously and understand what others have to say, their ideas, and perspective. Respect develops through the experiences we help cultivate.
A5. Listening is learning, my best relationships with students come from conversation and a genuine interest in shared experiences! #osussmce#globaledchat
A4. I don’t have a lot of experience with virtual exchange- but all of the information I learn about other cultures and societies just adds another layer to my understanding. The easiest way to learn is through experience! #osussmce#globaledchat
A4: Not everyone can study abroad and not everyone has the luxury of meeting many people from different cultures. Virtual exchange allows both teachers and students to become cultural competent by exposing us to different people all over the world! #ssvpln#globaledchat
A5: Active listening requires students to think about what is being said without making a decision on whether or not they agree immediately. This is crucial to empathy because it is tied to understanding, not jumping to conclusions #ssvpln#globaledchat
A3: These personal stories are global due to the classrooms diversity. I know that it is not a major activity but everyday we learn more and more about different perspectives & walks of life simply by giving students the platform to share 2/2 #globaledchat#ssvpln
A5: Being exposed to global perspectives and experiences means nothing if one cannot engage in deep and active listening of the world around them. Not just waiting for your turn to speak, but to actually listen to empathize and understand as a fellow human. #ssvpln#globaledchat
A5: People of all ages (students, teachers, husbands, etc) could benefit from reminders and role playing on how to listen and respond! Empathy can be learned at any age! #Globaledchat
A4 the ability to speak to and see people live who are different who have a different culture has the power to enrich lives & broaden & Change mindsets of T’s & S’s alike . #GlobalEdChat
A6: I've participated in #globaledchat a couple of times and it's a truly global network of diverse educators with like mindsets of thinking globally.
#PLNcollaboration
A5 We must have been given two ears and one mouth for a reason. Listening is a gateway to understanding. Understanding is a gateway to empathizing. #globaledchat#SparkEmpathy
A5: Both are critical conditions for empathy. Without both, our curiosity of another’s experience will be misinterpreted and be shallow and meaningless. #globaledchat
A3. Schools I worked in students from all over the globe are present. Student show tons of empathy for others when they realize (almost as if a light bulb comes on) that the friend seated beside them doesn't have any understanding of the content being shared. #GlobalEdChat
It was an honor today to connect a 5th grade dual language class in San Antonio with a Spanish Immersion preschoolschool in Fort Worth today. They are sharing language and learning. Its a start for many to connect beyond their everyday. #globaledchat
A4: Not everyone can study abroad and not everyone has the luxury of meeting many people from different cultures. Virtual exchange allows both teachers and students to become cultural competent by exposing us to different people all over the world! #ssvpln#globaledchat
#globaledchat

A6. After 40 years of trying this or that, I believe it is best taught through children's literature. Here is a list of 30 books to teach empathy. https://t.co/Vj9bC0651F#globalEdChat
A4: Not everyone can study abroad and not everyone has the luxury of meeting many people from different cultures. Virtual exchange allows both teachers and students to become cultural competent by exposing us to different people all over the world! #ssvpln#globaledchat

A6: Any curriculum that includes reading includes a place for empathy. I don't know how someone can read a book or story and NOT feel connected to others. #Globaledchat
A6: I think one of the most important strategies for this is modeling. Utilizing modeling with our behaviors, actions, and responses we can encourage our students to utilize these same empathetic strategies. #globaledchat#osussmce

A5: To me active listening is simplying hearing what someone is saying. I don’t think that does enough in developing empathy. On the other hand, deep listening is taking the time to truly understanding a person which is a key step to developing empathy #ssvpln#globaledchat
A6: Involving your students and their personal stories in your curriculum is important for so many reasons, one of which being this creates empathy. Also, studying history with a humanistic approach fosters empathy in your students. #ssvpln#globaledchat
A6: Utilizing collaborative reasoning in addition to frequent group work is a great strategy to reinforce and practice empathy. It will give students more opportunities to learn from each other in the classroom #ssvpln#globaledchat
A6: There are so many resources available!! I’ve really been encouraging other Ts to sign up for @EmpaticoOrg, especially if they’ve never done a #globalcollaboration! I love the lessons they’ve created & it’s the perfect platform for your first virtual connection! #globaledchat
A6: For history class, choosing primary sources that feature diverse and global voices can build empathy. We've also been encouraged to use Young-Adult literature, which specializes in the mental processes of feelings and being human in a vast world. #ssvpln#Globaledchat
A6: This is a great book on listening: "Listening: A Framework for Teaching Across Difference" by Katherine Schultz. & also this article is a good one: https://t.co/eZrETGVlIe s/o to Dr. A for these resources!! #ssvpln#globaledchat
A6. We’ve used visual aids to work on empathy- for example using photos of historical events and having students try to think of the emotions the person in the photo was experiencing. The students loved it & connected with the history! #osussmce#globaledchat
A6: Involving your students and their personal stories in your curriculum is important for so many reasons, one of which being this creates empathy. Also, studying history with a humanistic approach fosters empathy in your students. #ssvpln#globaledchat
A7: starting here in twitter chats! This is a conversation between educators from a variety of places. Keeping conversations like these going on more forums turns into meetings and eventually a true product! #ssvpln#globaledchat
A7: I believe in the power of a connected classroom, which starts w/ being a connected educator! It’s up to us to connect & collaborate and provide opportunities for our Ss to learn from others & become more empathetic! Together we can be part of a positive change! #globaledchat
I would agree with Melissa. #globaledchat@Twitter is a great place to start, to meet a community of like-minded people. But then how does that work get back to the school, the classroom?
A7: starting here in twitter chats! This is a conversation between educators from a variety of places. Keeping conversations like these going on more forums turns into meetings and eventually a true product! #ssvpln#globaledchat
Q7: There are so many ways to #sparkchange. Connect your students to other students. Give them choice and a platform to amplify their voices. And connect yourself to other educators! Together we are unstoppable! #globaledchat
A7: Educators need to constantly be re-examining their own biases, talking and working with other educators and lastly setting an example for their Ss! Taking action starts with who you collaborate with and how you work to keep yourself informed #ssvpln#globaledchat
A7: Having discussions with students and other educators about the importance of thinking for themselves and encouraging the use of democratic discussions among colleagues and students. #osussmce#globaledchat

A7: we have to get comfortable with the uncomfortable. You have to go outside your box to learn and inspire change. We also need to listen to each other! Also, we can ask our students what they see and feel. They have the best ideas. They are the future, after all. #Globaledchat
A7 Find a cause close to your Ss and communities heart and pursue making an impact. Our Ss joined in @cherandpete#JuniorWaterWalkers project. They will take action while also sparking others to do the same. #globaledchat@JoAnnJacobs68

A6: Bringing in the voices of others is essential. When teaching events of history, we must use testimony. @USCIWitness and @HolocaustMuseum are two of my go-to resources. #globaledchat
In reply to
@EmpaticoOrg, @USCIWitness, @HolocaustMuseum
A7: it starts by being about what you say—leading by example! Then, like most things in life, it starts small, ex: cross disciplinary lessons. Working together and being emphatic in your school community is necessary in order to change the world. #globaledchat#ssvpln
Thank you all for an inspiring conversation. If you’d like to learn more about Empatico and how we #sparkempathy by connecting classrooms across communities and countries, please visit https://t.co/T9HqBXPKnd! #globaledchat
Always incredibly grateful to @hsingmaster and this wonderful #globaledchat community for their commitment to making our world a better place! #mypeople 🌎🌍🌏
A7: These Twitter chats are a perfect example. Especially when you consider the sheer scale of different themes and topics. Everything from global education, to teaching the holidays, to teaching "weird" topics, to using games in school. #ssvpln#globaledchat
