Observing tonight...don't know a lot about genius hour
a1
Gives them a unique chance to own, direct, their learning. Empowerment, choice
A1 genius hour taps into Ss passions, interests, and possibilities. Allows for creative problem solving & personalization
A1:It allows our Ss to pick something they are interested in, creates S centered classroom, deeper levels of learning
A1: lets kids explore passions in a semi-structured environment. lets them love learning bc they CHOOSE what to learn.
Megan here! First grade teacher from Ness City.
Joe Kelly, admin, Holtonian, RCJHK
A1: Giving Ss choice in thier learning increases
Julie Samuels, Teacher Education @ Pittsburg State
Learning & growing is all about passion & interest. GH taps in to Ss drive to discover new ideas they love https://t.co/3lGFu6kSdt
A1- One reason I belive Ss need genius hour because it values their interests
A1 the power of voice and choice. How can you not be engaged when you chose your project? Ss chance to shine!
A1- It puts real-world relevance to their learning.
Tayler Ramsey, 5th grade teacher in Overland Park, KS! Excited to learn tonight
A1: Any time you can give Ss choice about what they are doing or what they are learning, you automatically ⬆️ their motivation.
A1) It allows Ss to shine. It builds confidence and allows them to lead and show their talent in ways we may not have known
A1: The innovators are the one who solve the world's problems, hour is a must, IMO. Kids need time to learn their passions
Thanks for having me, always excited to chat with you guys
A1 I want to give students an opportunity to direct their education!!
A1 As a former gifted facilitator, I believe it is essential for kids (and adults) to explore areas of interest
a1: It gives students voice and choice in their own learning.
A1) Gives S the opportunity to explore their interests, things they are passionate about
A1 so many reasons, but #1 is gives Ss a voice!
A1 allows for Ss to define their learning by creating unique learning experiences without the boundaries imposed by others
A1: To give Ss ownership in their education
hey look who i found on the
I'm Jonathan Ferrell 6th grade teacher in . Looking to steal a few good ideas from tonight's conversation on .
Yes. GH Lends itself to A student centered classroom full of curiosity & engagement
Ownership for students. makes it real. Real is good!
A1: Also sets up a creative space they will experience in the job field....working on things without someone telling me every move
A1: Values Ss interests, put skills into real application, builds confidence, inspires new interests... should I continue?
A2: It helps them express their ideas and interests about something they are passionate about. They have choice.
A1:encourages their interests, engages and allows relevant learning
Hello! Larissa from Turner! I am an instructional coach and love Genius hour!
A1 It's important for them to be able to share their passions it shows that their interests are important S voice & choice
Hello to you too, excited to connect with all these amazing educators/eduheroes
I like that. Ss showing us their gifts and talents.
A1: increases engagement & motivation, allows Ss to pursue their interests, challenges Ss to be critical thinkers/problem solvers
Yes! https://t.co/0NYZTatwaf
A1: Any time you can give Ss choice about what they are doing or what they are learning, you automatically ⬆️ their motivation.
Interest is key if Ss are passionate they will travel to the ends of the Earth to learn more. Literally, Pokemon!
A1: As a parent of little who aren't in school yet it makes me excited for them be starting school with it.
A1: GH gives Ss a chance to become experts on something they are passionate about. Building confidence and 21st Century Skills
A1: is often the first time kids have had their passions honored or asked to connect learning and real application
Sorry A1: not A2! Ha Tired teacher syndrome
A1: Genius hour is about sparking passionate curiosity that could pave ways to deep engagement in learning!
A1: Because it gives control of learning to the S!
We started genius hour today and a Ss told us about his passion of adoption & what it has been like. Never would have known
A1 During students are empowered to make real decisions about things that are relevent to them. My kids love it.
This strikes a chord with me.Relevenace to real world https://t.co/gIejRQlfQS
A1- It puts real-world relevance to their learning.
A1: Obviously Ss are going to be more invested and dedicated if they have control of the objective
A1 GH levels the playing field! Everyone is on an individual plan of study w
A1 Cont... As a secondary T I do struggle to find the time to put it in, I have so much to get in such a short time already...
How often do you guys do Genius hour, is everyday, once a week?
We are only on Q1, and I'm already pumped to introduce to my Ss Friday!
A1 if I am more invested in my own learning, I am more likely to put the extra effort. taps into passion & relevance
wrong hash! Mondays or Fridays!
Yes! Can anyone weigh in on how they structure in their class? https://t.co/uqUWSaM1IM
How often do you guys do Genius hour, is everyday, once a week?
I use my makerspace with GH they blend well together. Plan GH & create artifacts about their GH https://t.co/NfgeLXPLtA
A1: Also sets up a creative space they will experience in the job field....working on things without someone telling me every move
A1:allows kids the opportunity to tap into their own marvellous minds &discover their capabilities. Bri Starr Y6 teacher in Aus!
Love this! https://t.co/oJXaX4WmTn
A1 if I am more invested in my own learning, I am more likely to put the extra effort. taps into passion & relevance
A1: S are in charge of their learning!!!
All students should have the opportunity to explore passion and interest, noy just select Sts. https://t.co/lf4ClcytF4
A1 As a former gifted facilitator, I believe it is essential for kids (and adults) to explore areas of interest
That is cool. I have some boys who are dancers. Never would have known. GH gr8 way to get to know Ss
Would be awesome to visit a classroom with GH in action!
A1: GH is also about relevancy and engagement. 2 things desperately needed today!
A1: I am convinced that sparks an interest in learning that can carry over to other subject areas.
I am hoping my HS Teaching as a Career course will allow some Ss to discover a passion for Ting
Students may be in your building, in your school, or even in your class, but in a sacred way, they are in your care.
Nicely put. Relevance, interest, independence = https://t.co/43ae7f7Bdu
A1 GH levels the playing field! Everyone is on an individual plan of study w
A1: Students need to experience what true passion for learning feels like so they will become lifelong learners.
Love the insight you gained https://t.co/XpmwGLXcH9
We started genius hour today and a Ss told us about his passion of adoption & what it has been like. Never would have known
Love this explanation of https://t.co/LOINkHZlpL
A1: Also sets up a creative space they will experience in the job field....working on things without someone telling me every move
Q2: using the Google 20% model, every Friday is genius hour time
A2: We do "tech stations" on Friday. Not quite to the level of but does allow some exploration and play
A2 if is that important to you, you will find time. Allows for integration across content areas
Yes. Best reason I can think of for . We all win when our students are empowered. https://t.co/RmVRuD3Pts
A1: Because it gives control of learning to the S!
1st love the pony! 2nd most once a week mine is longer and more flexible every other Fri for science
Yes! Trying to think of the ways to use this with a MS or HS schedule.
Definitely agree. We have some Ts now turning other content into a genius hour setup with a lot more choice and freedom
I'm late, I'm late...for a very important date! Hi all! Been a CRAZY busy Monday here in SW KS
Q2: Hi! Joining in late.Gena 1st grade....last year we did an hour on Fridays in lieu of centers, kids really looked forward to it
Absolutely I may lose interest temporarily BUT If passionate I will find my way back.
A2: You can use it as enrichment opportunity in intervention period, or Google's idea of 20% of time, last 10 minutes of class
I'm doing an hour Friday afternoon! Hoping to keep engagement high during Friday afternoon slump! https://t.co/WZw0A3ucry
Hoping someone can help me picture the logistics of doing this within the confines of a MS/HS schedule! https://t.co/SOPgKRH1jJ
I agree!! How do we not make time to honor the interests and passions of Ss! Essential to be read for their life!
A2: Looking at making it part of seminar time this yr, transitioning fm Friday makerspace to Friday genius hour/passion projects.
A2: working on finding the time. Friday afternoons seems the best. I know it's worth it to get that time in!
A2: I made every other Friday a to begin. The more kids were engaged, it made space for momentum.
A2) We do it when Ss come to library once a week. I had always done it on a Friday instead of whatever our project was
a2: I have a flex time in the PM this year but last year I saved Friday afternoons for Genius Hour
Good Points https://t.co/dn3vZUeEWn
A2 if is that important to you, you will find time. Allows for integration across content areas
A2: Start by using blended learning and collaborative learning more often.
A2: it's integration of content areas huge ELA components with Speak/listening, writing, reading, not to mention Tech.
Have you ever had a S who struggles to find a passion
A2 plan is to build it across curriculum - IE write about the project and combine with writing.
A2 I can't teach my Ss all that they each learn in a GH! The soft skills that they learn are TREMENDOUS!
Better Late than not at all! Sandy from central Ks.
A2 think of all the "wasted time" - class restroom breaks, bell work... take that time and incorporate more meaningful time
Great idea for closing out the week but more important it sets the tone for Monday!
For most ELA at my school weekly. But for me I really want to go slow & give Ss time to tweak & change if want
A2: when I critically looked at my schedule there were components (like whole class restroom breaks for one) that wasted time.
A2: I would like to use Friday for GH but it may be a project that is ongoing
A2: it's very guided in 1st grade until Ss read, then I try once a week and they do fab things
Yes! Single biggest hurdle for my ss. They don't believe me when I say its their choice & their responsibility.
A2: I dedicated 2-3 hours on Fridays for . Ss also had about 30 minutes daily to work independently on their projects.
I think seeing them use their own time for what you implemented is such a big reward
Also, while getting students engaged is important, a real target is to empower students.
A2: This can be tricky. This year we are doing every Friday. Going to integrate ELA by having Ss blog about GH.
I love that idea. I'm switching my library time so maybe that will actually work this year!
A2: There are a handful of Ts that incorporate GH into their weekly schedule, would love to have a GH building wide every week!
A2 Philosophically, we make time for what we value in life. If we belive empowering students is critical we will make time.
how do you guide these kiddos?
Q2- We gave our staff the option thru our master schedule
This is it right here!! So true!
So true! If you want it to happen you will find a way
yes! I usually eat lunch w that S and we just chat one-to-one! The passions come out, they can't label them!
It is real learning & therefore a good use of time. That said, I don't have a set schedule. Just do it whenever I can make it fit
A2: actually touched on most of the research and literacy standards I wanted the kids to master anyway!
A2/1 Small increments in science. ELA block classes have long per to use. I incorp in brain breaks. https://t.co/m7SiYCitI3
Last year for 1st, we used Wonderopolis as the guide where it would read to them & did more of a wonder passion
I need help with the management of it all .....20 first graders with zero help is overwhelming.
I struggle with this. Part of it is changing school culture. Takes time! They must learn to believe in themselves
A2: Think of it as investment. You are donating time to foster a love of learning. Make time to create & explore. Not pass a test.
wouldn't that be a great way to get ALL kids excited about school! https://t.co/4mVPBUhlEY
A2: There are a handful of Ts that incorporate GH into their weekly schedule, would love to have a GH building wide every week!
A2 I had kids use their classroom $$ to pay for more GH time last year!
True for nearly everything in life. https://t.co/RYbjsZWymz
A2 if is that important to you, you will find time. Allows for integration across content areas
I like the integration of ELA and blogging! https://t.co/0n4ArounBu
A2: This can be tricky. This year we are doing every Friday. Going to integrate ELA by having Ss blog about GH.
I understand. Did it with 24 K Ss. Needed to realize it wasn't about my vision, it was their learning
A2: Many Ss will work at home because they love so much!
A2 we are using as an after school program.
HAve to teach and model how to do this. Takes a lot of T honesty, vulnerability.
A2/2 Ss change topics but must hunker in by mid-Sep They do a lot of tweaking- makerspace used to design https://t.co/m7SiYCitI3
yes going to use it this year, very excited
Def agree! In a classroom there is no reason to compete with each other (unless you are playing a game, of course!)
This! https://t.co/F7PR63kDj9
A3 imagination is essential it is where true learning resides. Allow students to create and demonstrate. Encourage them to question
A2 Practically, in our grade level we use some science time and ELA workshop time each week. The kids get about 2 hrs per week.
Yes. But I ask them lots of questions & talk about interests they often do not know how passionate they really are
I'm right there with ya! Management is the key!
I found this to be common. It's THE reason I felt it was so important! Some Ss are so burnt out toward learning
Great idea. We created innovation plans, so lunch chat could help develop more details. https://t.co/QqLrzP2mmh
yes! I usually eat lunch w that S and we just chat one-to-one! The passions come out, they can't label them!
A2: integrating subjects together, so we don't have that "this is math/reading time" gives us the much needed time 4 genius hour
Did you see this about 1st https://t.co/5ysOGmUi9l
Last year for 1st, we used Wonderopolis as the guide where it would read to them & did more of a wonder passion
I modeled by explaining was my project. Research & prob solving was my passion & students need to see an example.
A3 as an admin, I encourage Ts to share their ideas so I can understand their vision & support them in their journey
a3 Biggest single challenge! I set a series of deadlines, hope to use by for
A3: Go in w/ research showing why it works. Explain it won't be free time. Give examples of how you will support on task behavior
A2: 1hr Wed arvo.I find theres less interruptions midweek. Hour+ would b ideal but kids generally start using their own time2💚!
A3: We did it as an enrichment opportunity during our intervention period, Ss loved it and dived deep into their subject
A3: When my previous principal came in and saw students AUTHENTICALLY engaged during , he was convinced.
Yes! I used wonderop last year along with our online encyclopedia subscription that reads to Ss also...helpful!
A3 ask admin to come in, ask Ss questions about their learning. The opp to see the learning in action will impact admin
A3: I'm fortunate to have flexibility and support to be innovative in my classroom
Our Admin are awesome. Both makerspace & GH appreciated. Expressed passion, engagement & personalization! https://t.co/BIt2MACBV3
A3) Just explained what it was & how it to standards. Admin was all for it because knew it was good for kids & engaging for them
A1: I presented it with research and a plan. And examples of potential of higher order thinking!
Would deadline be met if students are involved in setting? https://t.co/8qFVkBqrLf
a3 Biggest single challenge! I set a series of deadlines, hope to use by for
A3-Tried to use it to differentiate PD for Ts. was supportive bc it let Ts get what they need to be successful.
A3 I think gets a little nervous when I tell him "I have a new idea!" but he is super supportive of all of them!
Absolutely must have deadlines to keep Ss focused. Talk to them & help them realize their dream https://t.co/ixexLnZx2x
a3 Biggest single challenge! I set a series of deadlines, hope to use by for
A2 for MS math, I share 3 required standards & Ss choose which 2 address during
"they're more like guidelines than actual rules"
But, in theory, yes, that should help!
A3: Just tell them you're doing it!!😀😀
Q3 I adopted a partial presentation from and sent to my administrators for permission to move forward. They said yes!
A3 I would explain that it teaches them to set and reach goals on their own and explain how this is a lesson they will always need
A3: encourages us to try new things. He wants what is best for Ss too.
A3 invite admin to learn with the Ss. The power of Ss explaining their problem solving, critical thinking & creativity is poweful
The kind of deep thinking I had in 1 day of was more than in a week doing normal research papers or projects in ELA!
A2: also schedule as 'Literacy' time as it's totally meaningful reading, comprehension, writing, speaking&listening, +tech
A3: I'm in the same boat at Admin are on board in SMSD.
A3: I invited them and parents to the first round of student presentations and they wanted to spread it school wide
Q3: it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission... Just do it! :)
A3: My Principal supports Ts and really trusts us when we incorporate new ideas, so is great with her.
Better yet! Tell them told you to do it!!!
A3 Communication is always key & show application of standards
Can we say the Ed Commissioner said it is good for kids? https://t.co/INeXXNWGm6
A3: Just tell them you're doing it!!😀😀
I live by this... My admin expects it... I'm a lucky T!
https://t.co/k5180HzlT8
A3:Very supportive admin, always willing to allow us to try new ideas to promote student learning, Explain why and how
A3: Approach admin with excitement and passion. Be invested in the process and open to ways to improve. Encourage innovation.
A3: I don't ask, I just do it. :)
I don’t think Admin won’t be supportive of ideas that challenge and raise the bar for students!
A3: Invited Admin in to see engagement. Nuff said.
had Ss transform one area into a castle with a working drawbridge, stained glass & stone buildings
I agree. GH does not come from books but from curiosity driving your passion to new ways of thinking.
Although, I started small, design challenges, design a lab, work up to full-blown Establish credibility.
another class wrote, produced, directed a play for other Ss, Ts and even our supt to attend.
Back...looking at what I missed!
Agree. Baby steps. Create something small & take to new heights and dimensions then voila a passion & genius hour.
started by asking the Ss "what do you want to learn" "how are you going to show you learned"
A3 My district has embraced the ideas within . Hard not too when you see the awesome learning it sparks!
A3: Our admin is 100% supportive!
That's exactly how passions start. Something small then it gets really big! https://t.co/EoKeQvUBDr
Agree. Baby steps. Create something small & take to new heights and dimensions then voila a passion & genius hour.
last thought cont: the point is helping ss, not pursuing any agenda other than that!
Q4: What strategies do you have to help those students who are struggling to find a project? https://t.co/jzVJnnA1xN
Yes. The more curiosity & the more time you give Ss to tinker & create the more they will realize their passion.
I use the "Question, Explore, Create, Share" model
A3: after reading up about I felt passionate about it! No principal would or should squash a passionate teacher!
A4: Use Twitter or social media to find awesome EXs. Have student find a problem they want to solve. Have them start w/ a partner
A4 ask ?s, ask ?s, ask ?s until you draw out that passion or interest. Then step back and let their learning begin
Presented to students b4 winter break, 1 student taked w/ her mom abt possible projects! Bring parents into it as well!
Getting started on ! Start with these questions! https://t.co/bj8oYgRPYC
started by asking the Ss "what do you want to learn" "how are you going to show you learned"
A4: Patience, patience, patience!
Q4 this is my first year and biggest fear! Looking forward to your experience!
a4 Keep asking questions. Give them a break, say 10 minutes to do whatever they want, daydream. see where they go
A3 as an admin, how do you move Ts to doing this when you can't get them to or other places to learn about it!?
I have my Ss free-write about what they do every day. Sports, music, clubs etc. get them thnk interests https://t.co/hY2Jm1QaZ0
Q4: What strategies do you have to help those students who are struggling to find a project? https://t.co/jzVJnnA1xN
A4) Sit down & brainstorm what they like to do in free time, then help them turn it broad for driving question. Use webs
A4 have an open mind. The product may not be what you envisioned but the process is more important
A4: Ask them what they are passionate about, and then come up with a question regarding that passion
Q4: Talk. Listen. Ask. Try interest surveys. Connect to previous times you saw a spark in their eyes. Did I mention talk to them?
A4 Lunch Chat! Works every time 🍕🍎
Converse with students. Discover their passion. Guide them towards a path where they can find their own success!
A4 key is getting to know them. They understand their project is what they want, not what they think you want them to want.
You get a crazy MS T to get ss to want to do it. THey'll carry the buzz. :-D
A4 I would LOVE to start a GH by having Ss find a problem in the comm/ world to solve.
A4: What is something that bothers them? What do they do if they have free time?
Yes! Bring parents, experts, and helpers in to help kids with their passion. https://t.co/6ugYKmNdA2
Presented to students b4 winter break, 1 student taked w/ her mom abt possible projects! Bring parents into it as well!
Ask, how often do you get to study whatever you want? Usually get all no's. If could create curriculum, what would it be on?
Great question. How do you move teachers? https://t.co/gVWaPFyLmX
A3 as an admin, how do you move Ts to doing this when you can't get them to or other places to learn about it!?
A4 We use interest surveys and 1:1 conferences to nurture ideas. A few good open ended questions can usually uncover interests.
that is a great idea. Did something similar with Ts - presented a problem & let them come up with solutions
I think that by the time I feel like I should intervene, I should know them well enough to recommend a few things they might like
I do have one of those who is crazy enough to go with me to and 😉
This makes me think of S lead conferences where they share their progress with their parents https://t.co/45j0PFexmO
Presented to students b4 winter break, 1 student taked w/ her mom abt possible projects! Bring parents into it as well!
I've been asleep for 3 hrs (teacher nap 🙌🏻) but all my tweets were scheduled in so I've still been participating in 👌🏻
Yes. I get them talking pet peeves too & how they could fix them? Designs to eliminate them.
A4: Get to know the S & help them find curiosity/passion. Provide access to resources. Let them process - some things take time.
a4:brainstorm, mapping, observe, question what do you love?
A4 I worry that the more I meddle the more student projects will be what I want... Hoping I can give up control!
model for Ts. Present a prob that impacts Ts & Ss. Let Ts create solutions to see the power of GH so they can apply it
A4: I was certain not to show examples.I didn't want to influence.I asked guiding questions & let them discover their answers.
(1/2) Even if it doesn’t feel big enough, let them stumble on the rabbit hole during the research process.
A4: Guide with questions, interests and help them see what they are most passionate about. See if they can help solve a problem
That is the best approach - can be difficult but don't want to influence their prob solving, creativity & crit thinking
This is where I started, I didn't call it . The focus was on https://t.co/SpjfQEhRvz
A4 I would LOVE to start a GH by having Ss find a problem in the comm/ world to solve.
(2/2) S started with “how does music effect people” and found “how does music effect the brain?”
I set a passion GH too and discuss mine along the way modeling quest & research ideas.
good suggestion as I model everything else I'd like them to do. My thought, if I want them to, then I should
Excellent. Allow the Ss to see your passions as well
have any examples of guiding questions you'd be willing to offer a newb? Or website resources?
BTW for admin - using some PD time to let teachers go through the process can help build vision for the work with students
Focus on asking questions that will force them to keep thinking & taking project further.
We talked today abt "noticing" things around school: lunch lines, after-school pick up, landscaping, etc https://t.co/BkB2kNS4ds
model for Ts. Present a prob that impacts Ts & Ss. Let Ts create solutions to see the power of GH so they can apply it
so important! Many students are trained to "comply" or "please the teacher" it's important to back away a bit
Last question is coming up!
You can have genius hour with your Ts by asking them what their passion is and try to create a club
A4: listening to my 2nd/3rds during partner reading time always makes me smile...lots of interests pop up during this time!
Is it possible to allow them their own to explore a passion? Modeling always goes a long way. https://t.co/LadqEs7CAd
Great question. How do you move teachers? https://t.co/gVWaPFyLmX
A3 as an admin, how do you move Ts to doing this when you can't get them to or other places to learn about it!?
So important!! https://t.co/dd5QzmTBfy
A4 I worry that the more I meddle the more student projects will be what I want... Hoping I can give up control!
Or even turning some PD into Ts exploring things they want to learn about & get better in so they can experience it
YES! Our admin had a personalized PD day last year. We got to pick the areas we wanted to focus on.It was awesome!!
Q5: If you have done before in your classroom, share some success stories & great projects! https://t.co/u2bBzMlpx8
PD would do the same for Ts. Allow them to pursue questions/interests in regards to education. https://t.co/PZWDTc1gN9
BTW for admin - using some PD time to let teachers go through the process can help build vision for the work with students
Awesome idea. I may want to do that.
A4: Authentic 1:1 convos about their interests/passions
These "noticings" lead to process improvements & a sense of belonging bc Ts have an impact on the whole school
If 20% time works for Google and 3M, it can work in a school district!
A5: We use & & Dash/Dot () & & during our tech station projects
Love it! https://t.co/sfnQ24EevU
YES! Our admin had a personalized PD day last year. We got to pick the areas we wanted to focus on.It was awesome!!
Hearing the process from Ts who have implemented it and been through the process
How does GH work in HS? Is it during a particular class? Creating a PBL situation? Create a no bell school with some "free time"?
maybe even open it up to learning about anything they love - then reflecting on that process
Our principal is offering passion projects that will count as PD this year. Irrelevant PD = your fault!
A5: One new thing we did last year was . Ss had to explaing what their project would be.
I am wondering this too! https://t.co/KeR2nQBV3W

A5) One of my Ss observed the autism classroom, did interviews, filmed, then made film showcasing view of parent/Ts/Ss.
Our 5th grade Ss did this as well. Invited parents in to be the sharks. Was well received by both Ps and Ss
It could *could* be. I'm racking my brain for the T who made it a class. He's a

A5: One built an educ game website for class that we used...another researched poverty and wanted to start a 501c. Win-win
A5 Success = Watching my kids present to audiences. To see them confident, empowered, and sharing THEIR learning is just awesome.
S came back to see me & told me that even though he didn’t finish his project, he learned abt Mythology & it helped him HS Lit.
A5 when given the opportunity to show their learning in their own way, often Ss will surprise us beyond belief
We may be on the right track with our no bells, flex schedule.
