Hello everyone and welcome to tonight's #P12Leaders Chat. Let's start with introductions as we get set for a great discussion with special guest @DavidGeurin.
Our topic for tonight is "What matters most?"
I'll throw out two ideas, and you're invited to respond with WHAT MATTERS MOST to you as a school leader and WHY.
#P12Leaders
A1: Honest commitment leads to self-regulating accountability. Commitment is intrinsic whereas accountability is extrinsic. Intrinsic drivers are always more effective #P12Leaders
A1 - If youāre talking about children, then commitment to me comes first. You may be accountable for your actions, but being there for children can lend itself to being accountable. Obviously they are both required for excellent educators. #P12Leaders
A1: Honest commitment leads to self-regulating accountability. Commitment is intrinsic whereas accountability is extrinsic. Intrinsic drivers are always more effective #P12Leaders
A1: Commitment first. With a commitment to the culture, cause, organization, and overall success- you'll see that accountability becomes a natural self-driven desire for those that are truly committed. #p12leaders
A1: Accountability comes when when people have ownership of the project, school, task, etc. I value commitment in leadership but accountability pushes you to be the best you can be. #P12Leaders
A1. I have been pondering this question for a few seconds and it has really made me think. I think they go hand in hand, but if you have workers who arenāt committed, how can you build the accountability?
Great question. #p12leaders
A1. Commitment...need everyone on the team to be invested in the vision and have a desire to see it through. Accountability only matters if the team is committed. #P12Leaders

A1: Must be committed to building a trusting environment and leading hard working example to reach a level that we can hold others accountable #P12Leaders
Just got home from the rally in Frankfort. I am chilled to the bone! 8 pm coffee + heating blanket + Twitter :)
Great to be here with all of the #p12leaders
A1. Commitment...need everyone on the team to be invested in the vision and have a desire to see it through. Accountability only matters if the team is committed. #P12Leaders
Exactly. How can you give an uncommitted person the justification behind getting the job done? You can't hold someone accountable that doesn't care about the cause. #p12leaders
A1. I have been pondering this question for a few seconds and it has really made me think. I think they go hand in hand, but if you have workers who arenāt committed, how can you build the accountability?
Great question. #p12leaders
a2 While I believe why matters more than what I do, to do what I do well means pushing past "passion" or "feeling" when I don't feel like it. #P12leaders
A2: Passion. It's about progress over perfection. It's about a drive, the grit, the resilience to make progress in the face of constant criticism and hardships. #P12Leaders
A2: When we are passionate we want to perform our best. Even when performance possibly doesnāt live up to our standards, the passion is what makes us want to work at improving #P12Leaders
A1: We talk about this as a whole school team-> Commitment vs Compliance. Commitment has to be the goal... accountability points to compliance. Commitment breeds responsibility. #P12Leaders
A2: Passion! Definitely. If you are passionate, you will perform better.
I have tried to learn from some people who are knowledgable but not passionate and I get bored to tears.
Passion drives performance. #P12Leaders
A2. Reading The Wild Card by Hope and Wade King right now so my answer has to be PASSION. When you have passion for students and you share your passions in a creative way, then performance follows. #P12Leaders
A2: Passion. It's about progress over perfection. It's about a drive, the grit, the resilience to make progress in the face of constant criticism and hardships. #P12Leaders
A2 - Passion to me is a quality that is required for any truly great educator. It is what drives us to be better and leads to those who feel our desire for change. #P12Leaders
A2: Passion makes me think of intrinsic motivation. Want to improve because we want to do the best we can and not beside it is what we are supppsed to do #P12Leaders
A1: We talk about this as a whole school team-> Commitment vs Compliance. Commitment has to be the goal... accountability points to compliance. Commitment breeds responsibility. #P12Leaders
#P12Leaders Iāve said it 1000 times if Iāve said it once. I canāt teach you to love kids. If an interviewee doesnāt say they love kids during the course of our 40 minute conversation, move it along brother.
What matters to who? We live in a culture that only recognizes performance. One is truly blessed when their passion results in performance. #P12Leaders
A2: Passion makes me think of intrinsic motivation. Want to improve because we want to do the best we can and not beside it is what we are supppsed to do #P12Leaders
I say, Yes. When we see needs & respond selflessly to them, we can find ourselves feeling that passion afterwards...to do more and get better. #P12Leaders
What matters most to you? But I agree, culture is obsessed with performance. We can't always control our performance, but we can control our passion. #P12Leaders
What matters to who? We live in a culture that only recognizes performance. One is truly blessed when their passion results in performance. #P12Leaders
A3: Teaching.
Itās the teaching that goes along with the technology that makes technology so effective. You cannot be a good teacher with just using tech. Technology is not a pedagogy! #P12Leaders
#P12Leaders BUT! Performances, truly good, impactful and lasting performances can ONLY come from those that are passionate about what they are working withākids!
What matters to who? We live in a culture that only recognizes performance. One is truly blessed when their passion results in performance. #P12Leaders
Passion!! You can teach someone to teach content, you can teach someone classroom management strategies... BUT a passion & fire for educating kids is a magic & it canāt be bottled or manufactured!! #P12Leaders
A3 - Teaching 100 percent. Technology is a tool that great teachers utilize for the advancement of learning. Technology will never replace a truly qualified teaching professional. #P12Leaders
A3 - Teaching 100 percent. Technology is a tool that great teachers utilize for the advancement of learning. Technology will never replace a truly qualified teaching professional. #P12Leaders
A3: Teaching is hands down what matters most. Technology, as great as it is, is merely a tool that is only as great as the teachers who use it. #P12Leaders
A2: Purpose first (I realize thatās not an option but...), passion a close second, & when you combine the two. Bam!š„ Performance follows. #P12Leaders
A3: Technology is a tool for teachers to use. #edtech must be used purposefully and students must learn to make meaningful use of these tools. #P12Leaders
A3: As an educator who runs a blended learning classroom I can assure you nothing can replace a teacher. Technology amplifies efficiency but must be implemented by a skilled facilitator #P12Leaders
A3: Teaching is hands down what matters most. Technology, as great as it is, is merely a tool that is only as great as the teachers who use it. #P12Leaders
A3: Teaching. Students can use technology without us. A teacher facilitates the learning in coordination with the technology to make a difference. If technology matters more, who needs teachers? #p12leaders
I can have students complete a hundred different types of tech applications. But, without them knowing āwhyā itās important much gets lost. That is the Art of teaching. #P12Leaders
A3: Teaching.
Itās the teaching that goes along with the technology that makes technology so effective. You cannot be a good teacher with just using tech. Technology is not a pedagogy! #P12Leaders
A3) Tech is the tool. I would rather have a great lesson with a behavioral obj and quality assessments than see a T using tech for the sake of using it or it "looks" amazing. #P12Leadershttps://t.co/Nup5tK8UdO
Q3: Teaching. I love the relationship that you can build with students and parents. I still prefer doing so via personal modes of communication (calling/ meetings) and less tech driven (email). #P12Leaders

I love these graphics (and the awesome authors) they always get a room talking and then working on getting lessons to the next level! This one is new to me #P12Leaders

A3: It is always about the teacher & the teaching never about the tech. And i do love me some tech. But it is just a tool. It will amplify (good or bad) whatever is going on in the classroom. People, not programs OR tech. #p12leaders
A4 I think we need to teach both authentic problem finding and creative ways to solve problems. #P12Leaders There is no rubric for the real world! #NowClassrooms
A4 How you solve a problem will be remembered by many. Problems always arise. Itās how the problem is solved or remedied that people recall. #P12Leaders
A4 - problem solving. Itās like the glass half full approach. You can always find a hurdle in the road. Iāll take a person who jumps over it any day. #P12Leaders
A4: Problem finding- you have to know where the problems are- what needs to be addressed- what the data shows, etc... before you can problem solve #P12Leaders
A4: I would say problem-finding. Itās more important for students to formulate questions and seek to understand the unknown. This will eventually lead to problem-solving, but we should celebrate the journey #P12Leaders
A4: In an ideal world students are inquiry driven and determine the problems they want to solve before solving them. Effective inquiry is the highest form of learning #P12Leaders
A4: @DavidGeurin Great questions!! Problem Solving is more important! Anyone can find problems, solving is necessary... Even better when there are multiple solutions... #p12leaders
A4: Problem finding- you have to know where the problems are- what needs to be addressed- what the data shows, etc... before you can problem solve #P12Leaders
Q4: hard one! Finding gaps with the intentions of providing solutions to them. I want to empower my students to find gaps and contribute to the world by being activist so I tend to lean towards problem finding. #P12Leaders
A2 Passion for sure! I may fail at a lesson or a discussion may fall flat, but I have the passion to try and to move forward, to use those failing-forward performances as times for reflection & a great time to show Ss we all should just try :) #P12Leaders
A4: @DavidGeurin Great questions!! Problem Solving is more important! Anyone can find problems, solving is necessary... Even better when there are multiple solutions... #p12leaders
A4 - I tell students that if youāre looking for something to wrong, you wonāt have to look far. But, solving those problems can lead to a truly confident, happy person. #P12Leaders
A4: we need to be teaching our students how to problem solve in all areas! If there is one thing we all have in common, it is that we will encounter problems that we must find solutions to. Doesnāt get more real world than that! #P12Leaders
a4 We have no idea what the questions of the future will be, we need to help students keep asking important questions, not what will be on the test #P12Leaders#NOWclassrooms
A3 Teaching and while I have learned to love technology for its efficiency, method to give more choice and voice, to up relevance with research and more perspectives, without the teaching... #P12Leaders
A4: we need to be teaching our students how to problem solve in all areas! If there is one thing we all have in common, it is that we will encounter problems that we must find solutions to. Doesnāt get more real world than that! #P12Leaders
This is a hard one to pick between, but I think itās more important to find the problems first so that you can then identify solutions! #p12leaders A solution isnāt good if itās not tailored to what the problem around you actually is
A4: Problem finding is an important skill for Ss. Too often we give them the problem AND all of the info. If they seek out the Qs, ask for the info, problem-solving is a natural (& engaging) next step. #P12Leaders
A4 You need to figure out the problem before you can solve it. The way you solve the problem is just a important as realizing there is one. #P12Leaders
I agree we need to guide students to discover and verify information. If we keep spoon feeding them they will not be ready for the real world of work! #P12Leaders#nowclassrooms

A4 - What is the goal of teaching? A million answers, but one is the ability to help students have the confidence, risk taking and willingness to solve problems. #P12Leaders
A4: (part 2) For us as educators, we need to be able to identify & clarify problems but quickly move into solutions-oriented conversations & action. #nocomplainingrule#P12Leaders

I think solving is an incredibly important skill for students. Althougg identfying the problem is important, often the problem is given to them. #P12Leaders

A4) I think problem solving. By doing this, one will generate new questions and maybe find another problem. How do we teach "problem finding?" #P12Leaders
A2 Passion for sure! I may fail at a lesson or a discussion may fall flat, but I have the passion to try and to move forward, to use those failing-forward performances as times for reflection & a great time to show Ss we all should just try :) #P12Leaders
A4: Solution finders. That doesn't mean we don't acknowledge problems. But a mindset that is committed to solving any problem that comes our way far outweighs one that is focused on finding all of the problems. #p12leaders

Q5: Decisions. Nothing gets done without a conscientious decision to get the ball rolling. Your circumstances are created by your decisions. #P12Leaders
A5: Meaningful decisions can have long lasting effects while circumstances can be temporary and fleeting. Much thought must go into all decisions. #P12Leaders
A5: Meaningful decisions can have long lasting effects while circumstances can be temporary and fleeting. Much thought must go into all decisions. #P12Leaders
A5 (This chat is tripping me out in its simplicity and complexity!) Decisions. Circumstances may/not change based on our decisions, but tomorrow's a new day. I wouldn't stop pushing if Ss said, "well, that's the circumstance." I should stop pushing myself either. #P12Leaders
A5 We can't always control our circumstances, but we can always control how we respond to our circumstances. Decisions for the win in my thinking. #P12Leaders
Wow, some great answers. Especially on the last question. This is why opinions matter. We may not always agree, but being able to see other perspectives is what drives learning. #P12Leaders

A5 Some circumstances drive our decisions, and some decisions cause our circumstances. Take the time to gather all information to make an informed decision. #P12Leaders
A6: Understanding. Knowledge can take you nowhere if you are not understanding of the situation in which to use the knowledge appropriately #P12Leaders
A5 Some circumstances drive our decisions, and some decisions cause our circumstances. Take the time to gather all information to make an informed decision. #P12Leaders
A4: Problem Finding!!! It is always better to locate the problem and be proactive in order to PREVENT the problem than have to solve the problem after the fact... BUT, keep in mind, we are human and we all must problem solve at times...so model how to be Dick Clark. #P12Leaders
#p12leaders A5) This is a hard one for me. However, I might disagree with some people here. Decisions are more important for the leader because they will be taken considering other people's life.
A6 ...Depends on the topic but I would hope understanding. "I know in my heart of hearts..." and I'm glad to understand myself; most useful when I can use it to understand others. Tough question! #P12leaders
A6 - Understanding, and itās not close in my opinion. A student might know that alcohol in excess is bad, but understanding how it can influence behaviors and families is what shapes their ability to make decisions and truly be educated. #P12Leaders
A6: You can know about something and not truly understand it. Deep understanding is much more important than simply knowing about it. Premise of next generation standards is on deeper understanding! #P12Leaders
A6 - Understanding, and itās not close in my opinion. A student might know that alcohol in excess is bad, but understanding how it can influence behaviors and families is what shapes their ability to make decisions and truly be educated. #P12Leaders
A6: Back to my Covey Habit here... Seek first to understand. Understanding is so much deeper than knowing. This applies to any situation... content, relationships, communicating, empathy. #P12Leaders
A6 Understading. Weāre in a relationship making field & have eyes on us. Knowledge is just knowing something. Understanding is how you act with the knowledge and task at hand. #P12Leaders
A6 - Understanding matters more because people donāt care what you know until they know that you care and you canāt show you care unless you understand! #P12Leaders
A6 - Understanding matters more because people donāt care what you know until they know that you care and you canāt show you care unless you understand! #P12Leaders
A6: To understand is to know; therefore, understanding is most important. So many things in our schools, country and world in general could be improved we better understood one another. #P12Leaders
I love that the questions in this chat are open ended enough to be seen from multiple perspectives.
I thought of math when considering knowledge vs understanding. Many of yāall thought of relationships instead. #BetterTogether#P12Leaders
Great questions and convo! šš. Sorry but have to go. Will def use some of these questions in future conversations and during interviews. Thank @davidgeurin#P12Leaders

A6: To me understanding is a "quest" for knowledge. To know is important but to gain understanding is about the journey. People think they know things but haven't been on the real journey to understanding. #p12leaders
How about understanding but lacking the ability to know what to do? For me, knowing is more important. The leader makes decisions based on his/her knowledge base. #P12Leaders What's true?
A7 May I say a balance of both in some situations? We need to remember that as teachers/leaders we might be the only positive role model in a Ss life. #P12Leaders
A6: understanding is the key to true knowledge. Knowing barely scratches the surface to gaining true meaning. We must push our students to think deeper #P12Leaders
A7 - POSITIVEššš. Another shape changer in class and school. There is evidence that proves the power of a positive person. In schools, children need this as much as or more than anything. It drives relationships. #P12Leaders
A7: Being positive is critical to the climate and culture of a building, to decisions that are made, to relationships that are forged. While people appreciate "keeping it real" they value someone that will build them up, support them and champion for them. #leadlap#p12leaders
A7: I think I have a healthy balance of maintaining a realistic perspective while being positive and optimistic. Being negative doesnāt do anything for the situation. #P12Leaders
A7: Positivity goes a very long way. It's a disposition that you are willing to collaborate. Having a vision to exceed the confines of reality inspires people.#P12Leaders
A7: I think you need both positivity and realism. Having a balance allows you to set realistic expectations yet be willing to take risks by expecting a positive outcome #P12Leaders
A7: I am so on one side of this, I'm having a difficult time verbalizing. Positive always. In our business, we are dealers of hope & must believe in the impossible. Tell me it's impossible & then watch me do it. #efficacy#P12Leaders
I've been called an idealist, and I'm not going to apologize for it. Being realistic is usually the reason something can't be done. And I just can't accept that. #P12Leaders
Teach this everyday. They go hand in hand. In order to effectively solve a problem you have to fully identify and understand it. #P12Leaders#CivicsEducation
A7: I think the leader sets the tone! Positive Energy is contagious! My staff would describe me as a coach & encouger! That doesnāt mean we donāt have #realtalk convos, we do. But our focus is student driven & students deserve us at our best! #P12Leaders
A7: Positivity and realism are not mutually exclusive. It is critical we are real with our students, especially our HS students who are about to enter the real world. But that does not mean we cannot share an optimistic outlook #P12Leaders
I've been called an idealist, and I'm not going to apologize for it. Being realistic is usually the reason something can't be done. And I just can't accept that. #P12Leaders
A5: Decisions are critical to successful leadership. While circumstances are important it ultimately comes down to the ability to make decisions that are in the best interests of the kids, regardless of the circumstances #P12Leaders
Yes! When we think that something isnāt possible in the classroom or in our schools, we have given up the hope that true change can happen #P12Leaders
A7: As a leader, being positive is more important than being realistic. The reality of certain situations can be daunting to live in. Positivity always gives you something to look forward to. Thatās important when trying to accomplish something important. #P12Leaders
A7: Positive. Itās a game changer. It can turn non-believers to believers. Give courage to the timid. It may give someone just what she needs to take that risk, and make the impossible possible. Positivity can influence reality. #P12Leaders

#P12Leaders Iāll give you one. Our school @RiverdaleElem1 went from 4 years of being in school improvement to being a state board of education distinguished achievement award winning school.
