#K12ArtChat is an #ArtsEd chat that happens every Thurs 8:30 pm CST founded by #TeamGrundler @ArtGuy76 & @GrundlerArt & share Ss' art on Fridays via #FabArtsFri.
Intro: Erica, metro Detroit, Michigan, K-5, MEA/NEA (state & national delegate), MAEA/NAEA ( region liaison, state conference steering committee) #k12artchat
A1 #k12artchat The ability to recognize the elements of art; to use the elements to read a piece of art (performance, graphic, music, or ...); and to arrange the elements to create new art.
#K12ArtChat i think being able to talk about art with your own vocabulary. I am new to elem this semester and want kids to talk more about what they see.
A2 A makerspace is a location wherein students have a multitude of materials and/or tools to answer/respond to open-ended problem solving #k12artchat#makerEd
A2 #k12artchat A space where you create, where you have the resources to create, and where you have an audience to respond to–and interact with–what you created
A2 #k12artchat The artsy version: A place where there are no wrong creative choices and where supplies are provided for students to learn and create using new ideas and techniques!
Intro: 8th-12th art teacher in KS. Ex-JH BBall coach, member of KAEA, KACA, lover of life, encourager of creative decision making and a terrible disciplinarian. 😉#k12artchat
A3 The skills, language, and processes of art literacy, STEAM & Makerspaces are intertwined. Rigorous learning through these entities relies on creativity & meeting evolving objectives of any/all integrated subjects. #k12artchat
A3 #k12artchat Learning to understand and speak (= create with) a new language (art literacy + STEAM or STEM) and a place (Makerspace) in which to successfully do it.
A2 A #makerspace is any area devoted to creating, it can include both traditional materials like cardboard & wood to technological tools like robotics & 3D printing. #K12ArtChat
A4 LET KIDS EXPERIMENT! Back off, let them create with no fear of right or wrong. Don’t set out examples of final products, but instead demo processes... #K12ArtChat
Makerspaces are great places for STEAM learning as all these elements are intrinsic to process of creating, heres a look at an example of coding drawing robots from my digital media class #K12ArtChat
A4. #K12ArtChat include an art word wall. Hang photos of artists and art including student art. Play various types of music. Add instruments. And books of course including picture books like the dot.
A4 #k12artchat Decide on 3-5 elements of literacy you want students to learn (e.g., hue, saturation, intensity with respect to color; pitch, duration, harmonics w.r.t. music, etc). Have available 'pure' examples of each students can use to explore. more...
A4 continued #k12artchat Have students respond to a six-word story (or something similar) using the 'literacy words' that just learned. Have students read each others stories and explain what they think they mean.
Mini vids on cool projects, concepts, ideas contemporary artists are playing with would be cool too. Maybe a compilation on a digital device. #K12ArtChat
A5:Other skills with digital fabrication, coding, and bio-design....especially mashups like my students will be working on soon with @MorphiApp#3dprinted mycelium LEDs.The sky is the limit, but go beyond it.
#k12artchat
#k12artchat A5 skills that need development is knowing how to appropriate content and create original ideas. To engage in research and problem solving. To persist and fail.
A5 Time management, refining already good work, retry, trying materials that make you uncomfortable, more attempts to do transformational things with new materials (too much cutesy stuff/name plaques etc). #k12artchat
A5: I want respectful, independent explorers! My students are too use to waiting for directions & instructions. They aren’t keen on exploration... #K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat Thank you for hanging with us tonight. Last question for the evening. Teachers are often afraid to try makerspace because they are not sure how to assess student work. Join me at and learn more https://t.co/nvfOEqTizj
A5 #k12artchat Growth mindset (Carol Dweck). There's no fanatic like a convert, but do read and internalize her writing. From a growth mindset and non-critical direction, students can discover and develop the skills that they determine they need for what they decide to do.
A6:In this day and age,the proof is in the https://t.co/CVcCUpW351 don’t necessarily need a rubric to see a student is successful.Does it work, does it solve a problem? Is there empathy? Can you replicate it?Can you use the minimum of materials? The list is endless.....

#K12ArtChat A6 I use a student learning management platform paired with google forms and documentation/reflections on Sway for the presentations/portfolio development. It's the process NOT the end product.
A6 Use student contracts for ALL open-ended work. It includes my expectations, student goals w/feedback, timelines, checkpoints, & how students will know they met their goals. Students, parents, & I sign. I use the data from contracts to assess their work. #k12artchat#makerEd
