#aussieED Archive
#aussieED was founded on the belief that all teachers, and students, should have unlimited access to Professional Development, on their own terms, to improve their teaching, their schools and change the lives of the students they encounter. Since then, we have embarked on a mission to reach educators, not only in Australia but, all around the globe. We want to smash the barriers that prevent teachers from easily connecting and learning with each other. To that end, we have developed a regular Ed-chat each Sunday on twitter at #aussieED. The chat allows all teachers, leaders, administrators and all those connected with education to meet on an unbiased platform and discuss the real issues that effect what happens in classrooms everywhere. Our chats are authentic because we are real teachers walking the same walk that so many do everyday.

.1. Change is good. 'Just do it.'If you do what you've always done you will get what you've always gotten https://t.co/tjIVT1FIWU
1. Very inspirational. There are so many motivational pics - no time to look for another in my photo app.
Loving all these motivational images!! Will definitely have to check the Storify & borrow a few!
A1 Hi all- Sally, Syd. Sundays normally madhouse here. Not sure I have a favourite quote/meme. Different ones for diff. occasions
Love using Kid President with my kids - they love it and it always raises interesting discussions.
Best plan! https://t.co/bZNxfXSTmH
Loving all these motivational images!! Will definitely have to check the Storify & borrow a few!
are you on tweetdeck... goes way too fast for normal twitter app.
Kid president rocks! What a great story too...
YES! Kid will be making an appearance in a later question :)
A1. Honestly I find most online memes pretty trite, one size fits all & totally unmotivating.
have you ever tried making your own - or better yet, having the Ss make them?!
A1. Too many professionals wanting to "think like the kids" with these things.
Try - they are great, in English too
I can see why its a fav.. NICE
Ok... number 2 is coming soon :) Let's see if anyone has any to share!!
Love this - will have to share it with my Ss, always talking about dreaming big, but my boys will relate to this more
That said, assorted TED talks and other longer, better considered videos, have been good. Will try and think of some :)
The 'other' ... hashtag is killing me tonight! LOL
1 Not inspirational or motivational. But a good one I send to Ss when they don't use correct grammar! https://t.co/7IpVdVc4kN
Funny that the teacher with 1/4 million views on YouTube video picks as a Topic
2. Ellen's Oscars selfie nearly broke Twitter! Which would you love a selfie with?
I get that. Here's my own:Break rules with integrity. I just haven't matched it up with pic of fluffy cat or goat yet.
A few things yes, have worked with a lot of students on various video projects.
'None of us is as bright as all of us.' Ken Blanchard
gotta love Einstein, so many fab quotes.
LOL -- if you are good maybe I'll share it at the end :p hahaha https://t.co/Tseiyvg0DO
Funny that the teacher with 1/4 million views on YouTube video picks as a Topic
Fantastic! Let’s keep in touch. I will send you the dates 4 these chats.
I like to make my own images. This is me in a glacier in Iceland. Plus Dr Seuss inspiration. https://t.co/kGNDnftvk4
2. I was lucky enough to get a selfie with my eduhero last year!! Let me see if I can find it :p
Have to leave - hungry ;)
A1 Love motivational material so many great things to share with students. This is one of my favs. https://t.co/AdgmRhYtOF
❤️ him! The kids love him even more when you read his back Story. Amazing kiddo!
A2 Oh it has to be you as my you have shared so many cool edu ideas - you make me look good at our school
A1 here's a quote that came up in an earlier chat from the book What do you do with an idea? https://t.co/WcCAOSPq4x
...just waiting to be transformed.
A2 interestingly I recently had the opportunity to meet some great educators, but rather than take a selfie, I chatted with them.
but you haven't met me yet??? LOL...
Not sure I like meeting my heroes. Usually disappointing
nawww you rock!!! One day we'll get that selfie!!
let me guess if it wasn't me... must be the super
2 Mr Nagy my Yr 7 Science teacher
Q1 interested in Ss with language impairments? https://t.co/7NCElHKins knowledgeable & gives great insight into S, T & P p.o.v.
Sorry and I've been cooking up a storm tonight. and still going
Hoping to get a w/ none other than our very own this summer at !!
1 Actually I do have one quote in my classroom, Voltaire's "Judge a man by his questions rather than his answers." I like that one
A2 Dewey - "Failure is instructive. The person who really thinks learns quite as much from his failures as from his successes" GM
Ok, there is this one that has been on my wall for years now :) Works for my creative project motivation https://t.co/Zipemi2YC1
A2 - my eduheroes are a handful of Ts I had while growing up myself. If I can be half the educator they were...
I'm looking forward to singing Sinatra with you now, give me a mic and I'm yours https://t.co/TwzTRSGr2h
Hoping to get a w/ none other than our very own this summer at !!
we need to teach Ss "Before the Crying Jordan face, Michael Jordan was actually the best basketball player in history."
I need to check his story out it seems. I just love his videos
'People will forget what you said, forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.' M Angelou
Q2 would love a selfie with some of the great Ts who inspired me to teach including Bruce Carter
2. Elon Musk Founded PayPal, Tesla Motors & now makes reusable space rockets. Real Life Tony Stark. https://t.co/nG5IyQ2GH9
Here is my sporting hero!! This guy can do no wrong (except get injured & not play for 4-6 weeks!) https://t.co/1LDuSgFRDO
A2. Selfie? More like well considered chat :) Many authors, film directors, edu people like
Look out Denver here we come!!
but doesn't the saying go, if there's no photo it didn't happen?!
A2: Dr Ken Robinson. He'd be good to chat to. We'd look good in a selfie. Jamie Oliver would be up there too!
Ok... moving on to number 3 in a minute or so...
haha, haven't seen that one before.. made me laugh! so true too
Yeah, what happened there? They could have done with him today :(
2. 'The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.' It would've been amazing. https://t.co/Hu8RSst3Dg
was trying my best not to think about it during the chat :P but we got SERIOUSLY ripped off!
A2 My eduhero is my year 12 Lit teacher, Ian McKail. Got to see first hand how he inspires the even the most disengaged
A2 One of my most inspiring teachers was my Yr 1 teacher. Was fortunate enough to have a photo at Yr 12 graduation.
I got to meet him at . Didn't get a selfie. went one better. Got a bear hug 😄
is a gr8 speaker and passion flows
Sure, there can be pictures too then :) Anyone succeeding where I want to succeed is worth meeting.
Feeling humbled even thinking about it.....
And no one asks a pilot how long it took them to get their licence!
Ha yes. Hopefully they know that already! He's got some ripping quotes about persistence too. Oh and 6 rings...
I'm all kisses and hugs .... https://t.co/EfrdGt8IW4
I got to meet him at . Didn't get a selfie. went one better. Got a bear hug 😄
3. We've seen lots of differing views in edu recently. How do we ensure that we can voice our opinions while still valuing others?
Nice!!! I love PLN hugs!!!
A2 Current faves are Jo Boaler and Dylan Wiliam.
We need to accept that conflict is apart of our profession and embrace it. Positive conflict, positive outcomes
3. My soccer coach used to say "play the ball, not the man." I'd say as long as we are respectful of each other we can disagree.
my Ss know him rather well, so well 1 Asked to have less Michael Jordan during class time
A3. By having reasoned and detailed arguments that go beyond online memes? :)
3: Blue & Black! We need to take care in the words we use and always validate (not necessarily agree) the views of others.
Oh yeah! that landing was awesome!! is certainly up there, way way up there!
Q3 learn how to be active listeners perhaps engage in some Socratic seminars & learn how to discuss rigorously
A3: There is always room for voice. This chat is an example of ways to get your voice out there and share your knowledge
A3: being honest to yourself first and not belittling others with different views
Listen to others, let them challenge your thinking and you theirs. Be respectful but confident in your own beliefs.
3. Twitter and blogs are all valid ways of sharing your views in an open/honest way that encourage diversity of opinion
Memes can be fun but not going beyond them, or proving nothing but them, will always sell your point of view short.
A3 listen- have an open mind - but ultimately do what is best for your students in your circumstances
3. I think it's important that we are well versed before we jump in the deep end... don't start a discussion you can't back up
I want one of those - so cool!!!!
A3 By removing power from the conversation. Everyone's opinion is valid regardless of position, experience, etc.
A3: suspend your judgement of others & try not to what they say personally
Thanks for chats study, kids & school uniforms call 😊
3 By doing it respectfully
Sometimes the person I gave admired I dusagree with. I admire the fact that they have thought about something abd formed a belief
A3 - Keep an open mind. Use your words wisely, make sure you've got all the facts
SAVE THOUSANDS $$ FREE SEARCH NO LOGINS OR BROKERS
Australian Secondary School Students SAVE Student Debt https://t.co/GFDekpmJfm
A3 FYI, it's white & gold :P
3. We need to model what we teach our children. Mutual respect and understand. It's okay to disagree, it's not ok to be mean
3. Don't be afraid to share but be also prepared to listen
A3: Valuing opinions is not always about right or wrong. Often the discussion is important when both are right/wrong.
A2 My edu heroes are the learning support staff I work with everyday. They do an awesome job!
3. Goes back to my first tweet of the night... LISTEN with an OPEN MIND
A3: 'conflict' is not a dirty word - remain professional, don't make your points personal
A3 it's trying to be as informed as we can be, before making decisions or giving opinions means asking lots of different questions
A3: we all have a voice. The key is getting it out there and using the right platforms that impact on scale
A3 It's important to ensure that the language we use is carefully considered. We don't want to shut out by saying it the wrong way
Greatly admired Carl Sagan.
If you want to maje an apple pie from scratch you first invent the universe
We will be at same conference together before the end of the year, no doubt... https://t.co/pEnyRgeP8K
Not poor me! Love catching up :) Wish I was going to
A3: We create a culture that values open dialogue and presuming positive intent - not judging each other.
3 base conversations around evidence - not opinion
A3: suspend your judgement of others & try not to take things personally during courageous conversations/debates
The support staff in my classroom are awesome
No, nope, definitely not!
Yes - and the impression they can leave can be everlasting. Choose wisely!
3. Hold your own opinions like a leaf in the breeze.
Try to avoid jumping on media influenced education trends & back arguments with evidence
A3. Let's continue the tradition of letting people with no idea run things for us. No conflict! https://t.co/sIStzINAcT
If you play your cards right? lol...
A3 emotional intelligence assists in ensuring everyone is value and communicate with according to their strengths
3. Nothing worse than the view that "For me to be heard other have to be silenced". Especially in a school. Listen, just listen.
A3 - I think that we need to understand each other's Leadership and Career perspectives, strengths, gifts and talents.
so very true, but can be very difficult too, especially when passions run high
A3: we realize that, to serve all of our students and families, we need collective efficacy. Not your idea or my idea, but ours.
If we are talking we are hearing what we already know - listening to others is more valuable than listening to yourself!
It's hard because teaching should be evidence based but more often then not its opinion based
Show me the facts! Love it!
So very true... this is sort of where we are going with #4! https://t.co/gzX3cf7NYQ
It's hard because teaching should be evidence based but more often then not its opinion based
3. We need to model what we teach our children. Mutual respect and understanding. It's okay to disagree, it's not ok to be mean
A3: Admit when we get it wrong. It happens at times! Keep the conversation going and learn from one another!
you have 2 ears and one mouth for a reason :)
Yes! Not "I" "My" & "Me" but WE! https://t.co/nb7S5GXPoW
A3: we realize that, to serve all of our students and families, we need collective efficacy. Not your idea or my idea, but ours.
A3 Listen actively and only respond after giving careful thought
A3. There are knowns, and unknowns, and known unknowns and unknown knowns. There has to be a meme about that
Love this!!! Am going to be quoting that for sure :) https://t.co/t1hGJqV9uR
If we are talking we are hearing what we already know - listening to others is more valuable than listening to yourself!
Great explanation of conflict here
support staff in my school are awesome too & we make sure their voice is as important as T's
. Impt to be a good listener even if you don't agree with what someone has said.U may still learn something interesting or valuable
Hate to jump out but the sunshine & my neighbor are calling me out for our AM walk. Thanks for the fun friends!
the conversation is really fleshing it out nicely!! I think it's important that everyone doesn't have the same opinion
Definitely agree with this one. The power of admitting a mistake is huge https://t.co/9bh8sPmCfG
A3: Admit when we get it wrong. It happens at times! Keep the conversation going and learn from one another!
A2. Have a photo with Sir Ken Robinson. 1st groupie moment. :) Would love to meet
A3 Do we become insulated in our bubbles? Does this cloud our thoughts? Known as focus effect in psych. https://t.co/d7YyDlE30j
how boring would that be?
Don't bring others down but don't let them soften your views either.. As Sinatra says, "Do it (your) way" https://t.co/OGTpzipju8
Ha, awesome. I love that!
A2 - Would definitely love a selfie with . We started a great PLN together and haven't even met yet!
But often the loudest opinions crowd out the evidence. To the detriment of our Ss... https://t.co/7h1qxSUupo
It's hard because teaching should be evidence based but more often then not its opinion based
Yep! We need differing opinion so we get the best outcomes for students
Number 4 ties in nicely with number 3... and the conversation has flowed so awesomely for that... so here we go...
A3: Be polite. Read, do & learn as much as you can about everything you think you need, accept others know more and that that's ok
That is a very interesting graphic. Thanks for sharing.
4. The 'Ice Bucket Challenge' did a great job of promoting ALS. Share your tips for bringing people on board with new ideas.
And try to correct the mistake https://t.co/4ApZ7wSxhR
A3: Admit when we get it wrong. It happens at times! Keep the conversation going and learn from one another!
Why Im really enjoying using tech - google forms etc - the quiet voices get to shine in a different medium
Yes Matt. I spend my time fighting the squeeky wheels https://t.co/ax8lg0QrUj
But often the loudest opinions crowd out the evidence. To the detriment of our Ss... https://t.co/7h1qxSUupo
It's hard because teaching should be evidence based but more often then not its opinion based
A4. To an extent I disagree, how many ppl even remembered the ice bucket challenge was for ALS & not just to embarrass people?
On point as always Graham. Couldn't have said it any better myself
So true. Unfortunately, often the loudest opinions are the least thought through.
This is so true, unfairly so...how do we go about stopping this from happening?
Elanor Roosevelt, "It's better to be a candle than curse the darkness" *That's what 's are for? https://t.co/Pr3IvBGVHA
A4. My take is to personalise things, show them how a new idea helps them specifically with a task or job.
I'm happy to debate the topic further LOL
4.Share! Teaching private. If u find something great, shout it from the roof! or from your blog. https://t.co/GZPK6qKlKj Click it.
every video I watched started with why they are doing the ice bucket challenge?!
Our brains are wired to think that way. By knowing this we can be more aware of ourselves in conversation.
Q4 I'm trying a & to engage staff in disability PD incl tweeting, face-to-face, online
A4 yes, enjoyed participating in ice bucket :) people need to invest in and have a voice in innovating together
A3. By modelling it ourselves. It can be hard when we have preconceived ideas. Listen/reflect before we comment.
A4: Knowledge is power. Share the idea. Share the research. Let others see it in action and then let the word spread
look forward to that too! 😊
A4: Get them involved. Show where it works. Look for 'bright spots' (Heath Brothers). Work it out together. Becomes ours then!
A4 - Sharing it!! I got teachers onto by simply preaching about it all the time, lol. And they love it too now
.4 Don't tell people discuss model show, collaborate, share opinions ideas.Create ownership & challenge
Be passionate about your subject, invite parents and students for discussion, hear their thoughts and share ideas
I can see that when I have teachers hyper focus on one thing. Good to ponder.
4. I love sharing what I do with others via Twitter, TeachMeets, my blog... any way I can :p
4. One of the biggest challenges - getting staff on board with tech - show & share, convert a few, grow..
https://t.co/0hSrZZtPxT
need people to be aware and to listen to all. Seen things unraveled for one complaint and then multiple probs arise
A4. Hours of at the shoulder coaching as a guide by their side.
4. We live in a great time. We can share so much via youtube, blogs, twitter. We can spread ideas worldwide if they are great.
4. It's just like being in the classroom. Nothing will happen without relationships.
A4b. Great change only sticks when it shaped by a vision & impacts the culture
This is where positive conflict comes in. Numbers and observations do not lie. The squeaky wheel gets oiled eventually
Spot on, that authentic love 'passion' for what you do comes through https://t.co/ZtPSIA4w0p
Be passionate about your subject, invite parents and students for discussion, hear their thoughts and share ideas
and I spend time arguing petty things I need to learn to let go...
As often happens with 'viral' charity
A4 ran a fantastic PD with learning 'bungalows' linked to Padlet questions & info
A3 Open-mindedness + assertiveness + good understanding of the reasons behind everyone's perspective.
Hopefully not at the detriment of SS leaning
A4. The students & I have been making 3D items & giving them to staff. Hoping to create interest to get them into our makerspace.
A4. If you build it ... they will come?! Not always the case with education?!
A4 Greetings from US this morning! Share resources, stay positive, be the change, and focus on foreword thinkers
A4 One method was engaging in deep conversation when asked for help. Another was from ground up through Ss feeding up thoughts.
4 Share and show how and why it works for Ss
4. Attending and sharing at a is a great way to introduce, and bring people on board with, new things.
Best question in education: for what purpose? Best advice: Never assume anything
seems to happen a lot...thought it was just a problem here but seems a worldwide issue :-)
A4 Don't just tell them about it, show them! Make the learning visible!
I just get a bit cynical. Every week there's something new and "viral". Most causes get drowned out for the "spectacle".
the second person in is often the most important in shaping the culture of what is happening.
I agree. The person that steps back, takes their time and engages fully with the issue normally resolves it
Totally agree ... On so many levels too https://t.co/vslB2JWfTu
A4. If you build it ... they will come?! Not always the case with education?!
and they think you're CRAZY at first ... BUT once you start converting ...
A4: We work with Ts, often on frustrating topics at frustrating times. Honest, humour and empathy is ALL. https://t.co/nwc2BC5Gp5
4. Share benefits, reduce road blocks & communicate success
4. By encouraging change in a creative way. Know your audience and make it appeal to them
Nice. A classic! I was wondering how long it would take until the dancing man vid popped up on tonight's chat! :D
In everyone else's grease https://t.co/UnAMvbFHHn
This is where positive conflict comes in. Numbers and observations do not lie. The squeaky wheel gets oiled eventually
start with why?, get evidence from them. Other Ts will see ur courage & join, if it's best 4 the Ss
A4 - I work with schools to help teachers discover their unique professional identity and share. Builds professional trust.
If you are passionate about something it exudes from you and others will be caught up in your passion.
4. Must build trust, must model behaviours, must admit mistakes and must listen - actively
come to the dark side... we've got cookies :)
A4 If it's a big change start with a little group of willing people. Once they've been successful let them spread the light.
A4: Collaboration and reflection. Modeling those traits helps open the minds of all educators
Carl, your on fire tonight
hahaha love this pic! so funny... really made me LOL
A4 I should share my passion now flipped learning. I could & would talk under water about this to get other teachers onboard. AMA
Big shout out tonight to one of our PLN who had her first baby this week... Congrats and lots of love
A4. Sent staff a link for collaborative doc that we can work on together. Hoping I may create some interest/intro new resource.
chocolate chip ones tooo...
.4a. Working together as a team so impt in schs. Its all the better for the Ss and creates a happy working environment
yes... I blog and am presenting on my experiences at two upcoming conferences :)
I have to duck off now, still a fair bit to get ready for my PD tmr. What an exciting and invigorating chat! Thanks :D
thanks for joining us Dina :) enjoy your reading!
A4 building capacity of others
A4 to be authentic as a leader you need to be present in Ts classrooms talking a big game is just not enough
I don't always get to jump on but it is great to see ideas from where I used to live! Beauty of Twitter!
Number 5 is alive... and coming soon :)
The last one is an essential one. Communicating success is a great way to combat skepticism.
where are these cookies of which you speak?
and the Dad joke to finish it off . If I was on my phone I would have created a meme
and ... not 'flip' specific conferences :)
Working with colleagues is best way to build confidence, intro new ideas/tech start with 'early adopters' to get to
someone had too...:-) normally I am way too slow.. but seem to be in fine form tonight! LOL
Finally home for & I missed the start! Hi all from Perth!
4 collaborate, collaborate, collaborate. Did I say collaborate?
5.The Internet was there when Britney lost the plot. Share an edu-experience you'd rather forget, but also, how you dealt with it!
A4a. Make staff stakeholders. Send them to a fun PD, with the caveat they will be sharing the expertise or pushing the ideas after
A4: In my NQT Year I had a disaster of a lesson observation, class disengaged, no clear structure you learn by mistakes
Show how it works in real life. Make it visible and hands on. You build it people will come
good luck met at & will be back in Sydney to present about leading change
Elephants toothpaste around the classroom and blue T-shirt stains! Acknowledged I needed to work on prac set up and expectations
A5: Where to begin? Vent frustration at Ss rather than Ts who deserve it. The fix? Admit it was wrong, apologise to S and move on.
A4 let them know what's in it for them, and their students. Connect to a previously expressed want or need
A5. Went on camp with 12 students and 2 staff! Came home from camp with just two staff! A good sense of humor!
5. Funnily enough I cant remember - Old age or is that I just move on and think FAIL - first attempt in learning- always learning
A5 staff items on stage, trying to block out my part in YMCA and Wiggles Big Red Car....but on the up side the children loved them
Fantastic! You just need to post the Leaders vs. Boss poster and you will have the bookends! :P
A5. Loosing temper in front of kids. Got over it by maturing abiut 15 yrs.
I have had so many - It has ensured that I now set expectations - collaboratively and am formative when assessing.
I feel like I'm reading my horoscope this morning haha...change
Great quote: at this point is their a personal viral video you'd like to share? https://t.co/WvpbbknP8S
Elephants toothpaste around the classroom and blue T-shirt stains! Acknowledged I needed to work on prac set up and expectations
It brought a smile to my face. Bet the Ss loved it
A5: just about anything from my 1995 pedagogy. Happily use these anecdotes for my repertoire of amusing learning stories
they still talk about it!
There are lots. The most important thing is to learn from your mistakes and become a better person and teacher
A5 I love a good train wreck. I find my best bet is to throw it out, play a game of silent ball and try something else
haha.. I'll have to google that one now.. :-)
A5: When demonstrating cooking, mistakes are rife. Blame the equipment or tell the Ss it was intentional!
Sorry got distracted by a proposal at the door -bride sends groom+groomsman to ask my daughter to be her bridesmaid LOL!
A5. I tried projects. I made an example (see below). No one liked it. I cried tears of red cordial https://t.co/ZluP5Xcx1e
Just checking, you said collaborate?
