#asechat how do you share ideas online apart from Twitter?
  • ViciaScience Oct 2 @ 3:03 PM EDT
Depends on status of what I want to share - collaboration uses a different system than shared notes or planning stuff or writing #asechat
    In reply to @teachingofsci
  • teachingofsci Oct 2 @ 3:03 PM EDT
so, #asechat - how do you share ideas?
  • ViciaScience Oct 2 @ 3:05 PM EDT
I am really interested in how teachers can share effective lesson activities #ASEchat
    In reply to @teachingofsci
  • teachingofsci Oct 2 @ 3:05 PM EDT
#asechat welcome one and all to the discussion, looking at ways to make sharing online more effective. I'm a teacher-educator with IOP.
  • Glazgow Oct 2 @ 3:06 PM EDT
We have an online system in Scotland - Glow - which allows sharing and collaboration across the country #asechat
    In reply to @teachingofsci

#asechat social media popular for many. Networking at conferences is powerful
    In reply to @teachingofsci

the constant issue - crowdsourcing vs curation. Where to put them all so searchable! #asechat
    In reply to @ViciaScience
  • teachingofsci Oct 2 @ 3:07 PM EDT
is that science specific? What kind of %age of teachers use it, would you say? #asechat
    In reply to @Glazgow
  • Glazgow Oct 2 @ 3:07 PM EDT
Beyond that I have a TES ac with free resources to share and use Dropbox, Google Drive and One Drive for sharing different things #ASEchat
    In reply to @teachingofsci
  • ViciaScience Oct 2 @ 3:07 PM EDT
Also 'immediacy' becomes an issue when online available. I would add QA to your list of online issues #asechat
    In reply to @teachingofsci

  • teachingofsci Oct 2 @ 3:08 PM EDT
definitely - who decides what's worth saving and what isn't up to scratch? #asechat
    In reply to @ViciaScience

Is Glow the place to go if you need to find a lesson idea on a specific topic? #asechat
    In reply to @Glazgow, @teachingofsci
  • teachingofsci Oct 2 @ 3:09 PM EDT
that's a lot to keep track of - do they each have different purpose or is there duplication? #asechat
    In reply to @Glazgow

Blog, pieces for @RSC_EiC, resources onto Learn Chemistry and through exam boards, chem ed journals, f2f at TeachMeets #asechat
    In reply to @teachingofsci, @RSC_EiC
  • Glazgow Oct 2 @ 3:10 PM EDT
Storage/searching is a big issue - there are some great resource banks already out there -just need science teachers to add to them #asechat
    In reply to @teachingofsci, @ViciaScience

By having a note book and writing things down #retro #asechat :)

  • teachingofsci Oct 2 @ 3:10 PM EDT
that's a great reach. I'd say nothing in England comes close. #asechat
    • Glazgow Oct 2 @ 3:08 PM EDT
No, any educator across Scotland has access but you can set up groups for specific things, eg Primary Science. % is growing prob > 75% now
      In reply to @teachingofsci
  • Glazgow Oct 2 @ 3:11 PM EDT
Early on there was a lot of duplication but it's improving. There are levels, National - LA - Cluster - School #ASEchat
    In reply to @teachingofsci
  • ViciaScience Oct 2 @ 3:11 PM EDT
So should online teacher resource banks have a user awarded star system to rate either the author or resource? #asechat
    In reply to @teachingofsci

opinions? better for any user to grade or have a peer review system - and if so who reviews/pays? #asechat

Advantage of Learn Chemistry, resources are evaluated before being put up, so much rubbish/ blatant copywrite infringement on TES #asechat
    In reply to @teachingofsci, @ViciaScience
  • Glazgow Oct 2 @ 3:13 PM EDT
It was a Scottish g'ment initiative. Useless when it started but in last 3/4 years has become an outstanding resouce. #ASEchat

  • ViciaScience Oct 2 @ 3:14 PM EDT
I think IoP is trying hard to build online communities - but something needed for science and for all phases? #ASEchat
    In reply to @teachingofsci
  • Glazgow Oct 2 @ 3:14 PM EDT
Yes, but no more than anywhere else online. Some gps are very tightly curated, others pretty open to anyone adding material #ASEchat
    In reply to @ViciaScience, @teachingofsci
  • teachingofsci Oct 2 @ 3:14 PM EDT
Can any teacher submit resources to LearnChemistry (from @RoySocChem)? who does the evaluation? #asechat

Some structure in a massive online resource bank appears important - free for alls do not work well #ASEchat
    In reply to @Glazgow, @teachingofsci
  • doc_kristy Oct 2 @ 3:15 PM EDT
My default depends on stage I'm teaching, for A level I will go to journals if I want to innovate #asechat
    In reply to @teachingofsci

TES sort of has this where users can rate resources - object to the charging aspect but still some good free stuff on there #ASEchat
    In reply to @ViciaScience, @teachingofsci
  • doc_kristy Oct 2 @ 3:16 PM EDT
No, resources are commissioned. You can propose a new resource I think. And people like me do the evaluation #asechat
    In reply to @teachingofsci, @ViciaScience, @RoySocChem
  • teachingofsci Oct 2 @ 3:16 PM EDT
#asechat 15 min in and several suggestions. Question: what if anything would have to change for you to submit to journals?
  • ViciaScience Oct 2 @ 3:17 PM EDT
The payment aspect of this is against my principles #asechat
    In reply to @Glazgow, @teachingofsci
  • DrBiol Oct 2 @ 3:17 PM EDT

    In reply to @teachingofsci
  • teachingofsci Oct 2 @ 3:17 PM EDT
#asechat journals/learned society platforms are by definition reviewed, but that reduces capacity. TES etc has little quality control
  • doc_kristy Oct 2 @ 3:18 PM EDT
Also @CLEAPSS is a great source of experiments, a shout out to @UncleBo80053383 for chemistry and @samirmoezzi for physics #asechat
  • ViciaScience Oct 2 @ 3:18 PM EDT
Just one last point -in science it is essential that shared lesson ideas are tried, tested from HS as well as learning perspective #ASEChat
    In reply to @teachingofsci
  • doc_kristy Oct 2 @ 3:19 PM EDT
Also reduces immediacy, a resource may be timely e.g., a Christmas themed experiment #ASEChat
    In reply to @teachingofsci
  • Glazgow Oct 2 @ 3:19 PM EDT
Totally - mine too. I enjoy sharing what I have made & used. TBH the best stuff on TES is free as it's been tested before sharing #ASEchat
    In reply to @ViciaScience, @teachingofsci
  • teachingofsci Oct 2 @ 3:19 PM EDT
v true, and that often needs specialist viewpoint. #asechat anyone had concerns about a shared resource/plan on those grounds?
    • ViciaScience Oct 2 @ 3:18 PM EDT

    In reply to @teachingofsci
  • sandrine9210 Oct 2 @ 3:20 PM EDT
I am outraged when I see that someone ask to pay for a free resource that they copied from a website. No watchdog on TES? #asechat

  • ViciaScience Oct 2 @ 3:20 PM EDT
Peer review is an important principle - but time consuming for author and reviewers. Some find this frustrating in an online era #ASEChat
    In reply to @teachingofsci
  • teachingofsci Oct 2 @ 3:20 PM EDT
v true; if I blog an idea, it's up in seconds. Submitted article needed 4 redrafts and will be published 6 months later. #asechat

    In reply to @teachingofsci
  • doc_kristy Oct 2 @ 3:23 PM EDT
I do submit to journals, it is v time consuming and impact isn't high as such a limited audience, worthwhile in other ways #ASEchat
    In reply to @teachingofsci
  • conniekim_ncsu Oct 2 @ 3:23 PM EDT
I believe it would be more beneficial for any user to grade to eliminate any sort of bias and keep it as fair as possible #asechat
    In reply to @teachingofsci
  • ViciaScience Oct 2 @ 3:23 PM EDT
But a peer review article should be researched and referenced - not a quick job for the author either. #ASEChat
    In reply to @teachingofsci
  • Glazgow Oct 2 @ 3:24 PM EDT
Certainly in PS very few Ts would read journals. Much more likely to read online articles & blogs #ASEchat
  • ViciaScience Oct 2 @ 3:24 PM EDT
And so it should, as it has a permanence and reach beyond the average blog #ASEChat
    • DrBiol Oct 2 @ 3:22 PM EDT

#asechat so if article submissions take too long to write/review/publish, is there a compromise? what do people do?
  • Newmanphysics Oct 2 @ 3:25 PM EDT
#asechat youtube is a great repository. I use to host vids for use on other sites and to show my students things https://t.co/fxDRDFFFYw
    In reply to @DrBiol, @teachingofsci
  • ViciaScience Oct 2 @ 3:25 PM EDT
Consider that journals are collected by libraries, so articles may be referenced centuries from now! #ASEChat
    In reply to @doc_kristy, @teachingofsci

#asechat CLEAPSS is an excellent resource I have used in every year of teaching. I always say so much more than a health and safety service.

  • sandrine9210 Oct 2 @ 3:27 PM EDT

    In reply to @Glazgow, @doc_kristy, @teachingofsci, @ViciaScience
  • ViciaScience Oct 2 @ 3:27 PM EDT
Does every teacher access resources via online channels? If not is there still a place for publications? #ASEChat
    In reply to @Glazgow
  • DrBiol Oct 2 @ 3:27 PM EDT
Agree entirely. However it's the reason why I only do 2 journal articles a year but publish more prolifically through other routes #ASEChat
    In reply to @ViciaScience
