Hey #champforkids! Good to "sorta be here" tonight. Another orchestra concert. 'Tis the season, apparently. This is Michael A. from #122edchat in Chicago. Would love it if any of the #4OCFpln crew could add a column to support tonight's discussion. @Rdene915@sew1080@mlarson_nj
Hi all! Kristen here from PA! I teach 6th grade science. And in one hour I’m moderating my first chat #sdedchat where we talk about thriving instead of surviving. Come join me!!! #champforkids

Miyagi says "Lesson not just karate only. Lesson whole life. Whole life have a balance. Everything be better."
Q1 - What do you do to ensure that you are balancing work and the rest of your life?
How has this effort made everything better?
#champforkids
A1: I make sure that i schedule time to myself each and every day. Maybe a chance to read a book or just meditate. It makes it easier for me to do my job when I feel relaxed and in control. #champforkids
A1: Leave work at work. I can count on one hand the number of times I've worked after putting my son to sleep or on the weekends this year. This has been a staple in self-care for me over the last 7 years of teaching, and it makes a world of difference. #champforkids
A1: I have been very good about not doing work at home. I go in earlier or stay later. This has helped me balance out and find myself better. I just need to get more organized, some things are slipping. But I can do it. #champforkids
A1: Hearing the phrase, "Daddy! We never see you!" was enough to rock me back into balance. I have done a better job of placing my own kids needs ahead of the million other things that need to get done each day. #champforkids
A1 This year I am not "grading" as much so that I am not always taking work home. I also make time to relax and watch my favorite shows without working at the same time. #champforkids
A1: I always enjoy a meal out with @LBStrunk (Like @BWWings tonight), catching up on a Netflix show, or just playing a videogame. Taking time away from school I think helps keep the fire burning. #champforkids
A1: Intentional reflection and self-monitoring are absolutes if educators are to remain effective. I intentionally schedule "off" time and stick to it. I also know when I need to step away. In order to serve others we have to take care of ourselves. #champforkids
A1: I’ve been making sure to set aside time every evening to draw/sketch and read...even if it’s just 15 minutes. It gives me a chance to recharge and connect with my inner self which allows me to be my best each day! #champforkids
Miyagi says "Lesson not just karate only. Lesson whole life. Whole life have a balance. Everything be better."
Q1 - What do you do to ensure that you are balancing work and the rest of your life?
How has this effort made everything better?
#champforkids
A1: I have made it a point to be okay with saying “no” and not run myself to the point that I have no energy left. When I get home, I’m 100% home- my family deserves that. #champforkids
Miyagi says "Lesson not just karate only. Lesson whole life. Whole life have a balance. Everything be better."
Q1 - What do you do to ensure that you are balancing work and the rest of your life?
How has this effort made everything better?
#champforkids
A1: I schedule times I’m leaving work and I follow that. The things not finished can wait until the next morning almost always. I also try to do things I enjoy to relax: read a book, watch sports, play games, and do puzzles! #champforkids
A1: @rodcarnill has really instilled in us ITC's to be mindful of how we spend our time. To make sure that we get out what we put in. It has really helped me to try and keep a better balance. #champforkids.
Miyagi says "Lesson not just karate only. Lesson whole life. Whole life have a balance. Everything be better."
Q1 - What do you do to ensure that you are balancing work and the rest of your life?
How has this effort made everything better?
#champforkids
A1 - As an exercise person, I’m fortunate that my work allows for time to actually do stuff that I love. That balance has made teaching and my own time invaluable both mentally and physically. Also, understanding that it’s impossible to be everything for everyone. #champforkids
Miyagi says "First learn stand, then learn fly. Nature rule Danielson, not mine.”
Q2 - What is something that you are working to learn to “stand” in, with hopes that it will help you to learn to “fly”?
#champforkids
I was just talking about this today The first 9 weeks, I was horrible at leaving at an appropriate time after school. Most nights I left at 730. It becane unhealthy.
Now, I pop on a Disney movie after school while working & once it's over, its my time to leave. #champforkids
Miyagi says "Lesson not just karate only. Lesson whole life. Whole life have a balance. Everything be better."
Q1 - What do you do to ensure that you are balancing work and the rest of your life?
How has this effort made everything better?
#champforkids
Love that you make that intentional time for rest. My mentor in college when I was an RA had me do plan time to not do anything school related. It's been helpful. #champforkids
A2: Learning to stand in my confidence and own my unique abilities as an educator as a leader. A "fake it 'til you make it" mentality seems to do the trick! #champforkids
A1b - Practicing the Art of Positivity has also created a place that always makes things better. That may sound strange and idealistic, but it does work. #champforkids
A2: I am hoping to learn patience. I tend to change course sometimes before I have a firm understanding of how something is doing. Patience will help me see through things. #champforkids
A1: It’s great to give 110% in everything you do, but you must remember when you give your all in one area, you may neglect other imp. areas in life—many times it’s ourselves we neglect. Take care of YOU. Because if you’re not good, nothing else matters.
#YouMatter#champforkids
A1: One thing I am trying to do more is be intentional about my plan, laying out everything I need to get done, then be really focused at certain times, so I can truly enjoy my free time, without feeling the pressure to always be getting stuff done #champforkids
A1: It hasn’t always been easy but avoiding things such as tech at specific times of my afternoon to allow time for me is what allows me to balance all things. These efforts have allowed myself to be more mindful for the following day. #champforkids
A2: This is long range, but I just secured a plan to start learning music once I am done taking this batch of online coursework. Starting in April, I have a teacher this is going to teach me bass so I can play music with our kids. #champforkids
A2 - Just being able to always try new things. It’s easy over time to get comfortable with the same ideas. That never promotes growth though. #champforkids
Ok Bonnie I love your honesty!!! My husband would say the same about me and I think I have gotten better!!! 🤷🏻♀️ we are all a work in progress! #champforkids
A2: I’m working to “stand” in the unknown. Made some life changes and know they are for the best, and embracing the fear of what’s to come will help me learn to “fly” #champforkids
Miyagi says "First learn stand, then learn fly. Nature rule Danielson, not mine.”
Q2 - What is something that you are working to learn to “stand” in, with hopes that it will help you to learn to “fly”?
#champforkids
A1: I am learning to stand in balance for what I need in my life so I am a better person. This way I will be able to fly to be better for my family and school life. #champforkids
A2: I need to learn and stick with patience. I tend to rush through things and “cover” too much. I need to trust myself and keep working on patience. #champforkids
Miyagi says "It’s okay to lose to opponent. It’s never okay to lose to fear.”
Q3 - Share a fear that you refuse to lose to? What are you doing to defeat this fear?
#champforkids
A2 At this point in life I am learning to stand in my truth and be confident in who I am as a professional and overall human. Be bold in my choices so I can take fight and help others soar confidently! #champforkids
A3: I refuse to continue being afraid of asserting myself out of fear that I will be judged, disliked, etc. I'm 30 YEARS OLD! But I guess the fear of disappointing others never goes away. #champforkids
A3: Failure. It stalks my life. There are many things that I haven't pursued bc I was afraid that it wouldn't come out right. I am learning to be OK with OK and grow from there. Life is a learning process. We need to model appropriate risk-taking for our Ss as well. #champforkids
A3: I refuse to lose to self doubt. I lived in that place for to long. I realize now that I am a strong confident perosn and I can do what I really put my mind to, it just may take time. I'm okay with that. #champforkids
A2: I’m learning to do better about not allowing someone else’s priorities frustrate me. We are all working towards different goals and at the speed we each need. I will do my best to encourage & provide support along the way, that will be my focus #champforkids
Miyagi says "First learn stand, then learn fly. Nature rule Danielson, not mine.”
Q2 - What is something that you are working to learn to “stand” in, with hopes that it will help you to learn to “fly”?
#champforkids
A3 - I’ve spent a lot of time writing. While I wasn’t somebody who wrote much prior to a few years ago, it was and still is a challenge to not quit. It’s all about making a difference that helps me to stay motivated. #champforkids
A2: I’m working to “stand” in meetings and keep my thoughts to myself when others in the room make it clear that their stance is different than mine. This helps me “fly” above being frustrated and instead, be able to stay in a calm state #champforkids
A3: Fear I won’t lose to is failing...I know stumbles are inevitable and I will not let knowing that stop me. As long as I get back up that’s all that matter! #champforkids
Miyagi says "It’s okay to lose to opponent. It’s never okay to lose to fear.”
Q3 - Share a fear that you refuse to lose to? What are you doing to defeat this fear?
#champforkids
A2: I hope that I’m learning to “stand” up for what is right, good & positive in the world. I’m human. I have my days. I’m not perfect. But I hope by doing so, I will “fly” as one who is inspiring to others, brings joy to others and makes others smile w/ #RAOK. ♥️ #champforkids
Have you ever taken the fear your strengths assessment? I wrote a blog about it once and one of my overpowering strengths is wanting to change things too quickly! https://t.co/axJT44Xp7r#champforkids
A2: I need to learn to be less critical of myself and just over think things. I need to re-start podcasting because I am interested in it rather than worried that people will listen to it.#champforkids
Miyagi says "First learn stand, then learn fly. Nature rule Danielson, not mine.”
Q2 - What is something that you are working to learn to “stand” in, with hopes that it will help you to learn to “fly”?
#champforkids
A3: That our kids can't learn as well as other students. I keep pushing back when I hear this type of negative talk and try to change the conversations to their strengths. #champforkids
Staying hydrated! I feel like all my cures to things end with "stay hydrated". You're sick? Stay hydrated. You have a headache? Stay hydrated. Feeling fatigued? Stay hydrated.
Not gonna lie, I probably don't get the recommended intake. But surr will try! #champforkids
Miyagi says "It’s okay to lose to opponent. It’s never okay to lose to fear.”
Q3 - Share a fear that you refuse to lose to? What are you doing to defeat this fear?
#champforkids
A2 I am learning to stand in the struggle, the failures, the things that don’t work and using those so I can fail forward. Reflecting on this so I can improve and keep moving forward for Ss and what they need. #champforkids
A2 #champforkids
This year I am doing an Action Research project in my district. My hope is to gain the confidence to turn my work into a Journal article.
A3: I REFUSE to allow self doubt keep me from taking risks and sharing my ideas. I will NOT let excuses become obstacles. I WILL have faith and believe in who I am and what I can accomplish #champforkids
Miyagi says "It’s okay to lose to opponent. It’s never okay to lose to fear.”
Q3 - Share a fear that you refuse to lose to? What are you doing to defeat this fear?
#champforkids
Miyagi says "Either you karate do "yes" or karate do "no." You karate do "guess so," (get squished) just like grape.”
Q4 - What's something you struggle to commit to?
Frame your answer as
a commitment statement
that excludes “try” and
uses “will”!

Miyagi says "It’s okay to lose to opponent. It’s never okay to lose to fear.”
Q3 - Share a fear that you refuse to lose to? What are you doing to defeat this fear?
#champforkids
A3: A fear I refuse to lose to is the fear of disappointment. I realized how deep this was for me over 2018, so with the new year I'm trying to focus on not giving up hope & to keep dreaming, embracing the tough moments and seeing how they can help me grow stronger #champforkids
A1: I was better at this when my kids were in high school sports. I’m learning how to balance again now that 2 are in college. I am happy that I was present in their lives. Now, I just have to figure out how to give the time back to myself ... & me & my hubby. #champforkids
A3: I’ve been called creative, persistent, a go-getter; yet, I will admit fear creeps in when I think of trying new things, especially when old things are working. I’m working on this though, especially when I know it’s what’s best for kids.
#champforkids
A3: I have a fear of the more advanced uses of Google Sheets. I plan to take an online course when I finish the current trip through grad school. #champforkids
A2: standing in faith, hope, patience that I’ll learn how to walk again. Focusing on moments of progress, even though it doesn’t stick, rather than focus on the big picture, knowing I have so far to go. Trusting that insur. Won’t kick me out before I’m walking. #champforkids
A3 A fear I refuse to lose to is defeat in the classroom and with relationships with my students. I make sure to keep a safe environment for open communication at all times. I also have a policy where they can come to me about anything that I can keep confidential.🦋#champforkids
A4: Make more time for me. I feel like I'm married to this Twitter thing at times. I feel like I need to be everywhere and support everyone. It's like chasing the sun. I need to be OK with taking a night off, every now and again. But, I don't wan to let people down. #champforkids

Q4 - What's something you struggle to commit to?

#champforkids
A3 I refuse to let self doubt and my fear of not being enough keep me from building relationships, and working towards being the best teacher I can be for my students. #champforkids
I am a runner. That is the thing I do for me. I run in the mornings before school and am currently training for my 1st Half Marathon. I also make cross stitch projects. I try to find a few mins every day to work on my current project. #champforkids
A4: I struggle to commit to making short visitations to classrooms and providing face-to-face feedback to teachers. I will do this moving forward and schedule it. #champforkids
A2 I am trying to learn how to give over control to my students. To let them fly without my constant guidance. I need to afford my students the oppritunity to truly show me what they are capable of! #champforkids
What are you writing about? I have almost let self doubt creep in and sabotage Champ for kids on more than one occasion!!! I feel you sister! #champforkids
A3: I refuse to change my teaching style and do things based on the “norm” I’m continuing to follow my passion and philosophy to defeat the fear #champforkids
I have started number talks to work on number sense this year in my math groups with Acceleration for the grade level skills. I just started this model in October and hoping to see some good results this year and my kids excel and start to close their math gaps. #champforkids
A4: I will start to ask for more help rather than to put so much work on my own shoulders. We have such a great network and I have to keep pushing myself to reach out to experts! #champforkids
A4: I WILL succeed at trying (I dont know if using trying is against the rules). I always get in my head that I'm going to fail or perform proficiently enough for my students, but how will I know if dont even try?
Same goes with food. I'll try all food 😂. #champforkids

Q4 - What's something you struggle to commit to?

#champforkids
A4 I struggles with confidence within my own work and abilities at time. I will work on believing more in myself and what I will accomplish in the near future. #champforkids
A5: Quality over quantity EVERY DAY. I want the best, not the most. When our kids were little, one would crank out pictures, but they would be BAD. The other would spend hrs on one drawing. Bottom line is it's not how much you do, but what you do that matters most. #champforkids
A5: It doesn't matter how many hours you work, how many assessments you give, how many conversations you have with students....the QUALITY of those is what matters. #champforkids
My fear is that I’m failing my Ss to help them achieve to the best of their ability! I am constantly trying new strategies as a way to not give into this fear! #champforkids
A3: my good is not good enough. I get up everyday, read through my Pinterest board of inspir. quotes, and try again. Look for small things. “Oh good, you’re back today.” (I was out on Fri.for PT.)As long as I make a diff for some. My good is better than my nothing. #champforkids
How going gradeless has completely transformed how I plan and deliver content to my students. It has shown me that grades were a constraint that kept students from engaging at a deeper level. #champforkids
A4: I WILL actively step outside my comfort zone (of people pleasing) to use my voice with conviction when I see something that isn't right #champforkids
A5: I may not know a whole lot, yet I know enough to do what is right for the students at the time. What is right may change on a daily basises, because our littles always change. #champforkids
A5: Quantity is nearly near the level of importance of quality just as equality is not the same as equity.
We must look for what is truly needed, not just what it is possible to give.
#champforkids
A4 I. Struggle to continue to give opportunities for students to have positive struggle in class. Giving them a chance to build their own resilience. Moving forward I will allow for more opportunities for this and will be there to lead them through it! #champforkids
A5 - It means that every day we can bring hope and dreams to one child. While we often touch many more, it’s a journey that makes a difference for students. #champforkids
A3 My fear...not being able to share the love of reading with my students. There are so many challenges and obstacles I have already faced first semester. Ready regroup, not give up and try some new things as of next week. Never give up. #champforkids
Miyagi says "It’s okay to lose to opponent. It’s never okay to lose to fear.”
Q3 - Share a fear that you refuse to lose to? What are you doing to defeat this fear?

A5 It’s not about the amount you have of something, it’s the quality in the myself that’s delivering the information. No matter how small my equipment, I will still find a way for it to work. #champforkids

Sam you are in the right group here! There are some amazing edu rockstars in this group that have embraced student agency and have turned over the reigns!!! @MarisaEThompson@MrPStrunk@EALewis2016 just to name a few! There are sooooo many more in this group! #champforkids
In reply to
@MrMarshsClass, @MarisaEThompson, @MrPStrunk, @EALewis2016
A1: I’m trying to be intentional about time management. Using my agenda / google calendar to look a week ahead & plan out a few days in advance. It helps me feel in control & gives me ample time to ask clarifying questions if any come up #champforkids
A4: Saying no. My enthusiasm for everything is greater than the time I have to commit to things. But, somehow I manage to get things done. 😊 #champforkids
Finding your voice early on and using it for what is right for you and your students is what is needed. Keep your littles in mind and speak up to help them learn to speak up for themselves. #champforkids
Thank you for an amazing night! I am so excited to welcome @jchandlerteach next week to take us into the ring to chat about The Power of Listening!
#champforkids
A4: I find it hard to commit to all the after school events and balancing with my own kids after school activities and events. Inwill@Artemis an event this year! #champforkids
A5 Stop looking at how much to cover...stop looking at content and expectations by state. Start looking at your students, their heart, their progress. That is where the quality is. That is where we can make a difference. #champforkids
Thanks for the reflection and thinking tonight @khoggardGRT and @CristinaDajero and the #champforkids family. After what was a crazy day tonight helped to calm me down.
A5: It’s not about how many lessons, activities, books you’ve shared. It’s all about the quality- how do you want to be remembered? Ss don’t remember worksheets- they remember Ts that never gave up on them & never allowed them to give up on themselves #champforkids
A4 I struggle to commit to balance in my life or putting myself first. I always sacrifice my gym time or down time to do other things. Example. Baking for staff tonight. I have a hard time accepting that my time matters to me. #champforkids

A5 Nothing in our profession can be rushed. We have to give our Ss the time they need with the content and the time they need from us. Quality relationships and quality teaching by far exceeds quantity. #champforkids
A5: To me this means I need to effectively implement a few intervention strategies effectively vs using way to many and overwhelming the students. #champforkids
A1: I’m not great at work/life balance. Especially since my idea of relaxation is reading books about education. This year I have set a goal that if I can leave work early enough I exercise to clear my head before going home. #champforkids
A5: QUALITY over quantity ALWAYS. Our students deserve thought, reasoning, and exploration. They deserve individualized instruction. They deserve a teacher that cares. Quality teacher, quality students.
#champforkids
A4: I will read directions better next time. 😂I will say no to urges to volunteer for anything that excites me. I almost volunteered to be on data team. and I don’t really do math. In my defense, I love collecting data as sci tt. Look at my pretty PT daily data! #champforkids
A5: I think about focusing less on likes & followers on social media & more on the networking, support, friendships, idea sharing, new learning & growth, inspiration, etc. #champforkids
A5: Not so good with the quality over quantity thing either. 😬 I guess I go with the mantra that my best is good enough, even though it’s not how I want it, and it’s better than nothing. #champforkids
A3: A fear I hold is that I won’t have the opportunity to make the change in education I want to, to combat this fear, I learn everything I can about research & trends in ed. & join Twitter chats to learn from all of you! I apply what I am learning & share w/ others.#champforkids
I agree and why is it that we refuse to give ourselves what we need? A little grace for ourselves goes a long way! Easier said than done though! #ChampForKids
A2: I’m learning to advocate for what’s best for kids even if it isn’t the popular option. I’m a people pleaser, so this is challenging for me. By being confident in my choice & the advice I give others, I can grow professionally & make a difference for kids. #champforkids
A5: I think about focusing less on likes & followers on social media & more on the networking, support, friendships, idea sharing, new learning & growth, inspiration, etc. #champforkids
