OMG...this is like one of those amazing punny Valentines you give/get in elementary school
Okay here we grow!!! In what ways do we encourage creativity in our classrooms? In our schools? π€
Not this time. First weekend off in a while...
A1: We encourage creativity by MODELING creativity. When Ss see their Ts being out of the box, it builds that creative culture.
A1 I like giving Ss choice within some structure for displaying mastery of a topic - the things they come up with are awesome!
A1: The most practical way in my class was to allow voice and choice in assignments.
A1 Giving students opportunities to create, ie math story problems. Student choice.
. has awesome fine arts collaboration- across all contents; PBL; offering student choice
A1: Coding, Genius Hour, Portfolios vs Tests...
I find that 's hooks are really helpful for adding in elements of to my instruction.
A1 Genius hour is a great way to incorporate creativity in the classroom
Q1 https://t.co/pdfM10r8TF
Okay here we grow!!! In what ways do we encourage creativity in our classrooms? In our schools? π€
A1 Planning lessons where Ss have flexibility to show their learning in a way that matches their learning style
A1. Always introducing Ts & Ss to new learning methods, PD opportunities, encourage risk taking, new concepts in edu, etc.
A1: Problem solving with multiple ways to approach in math classrooms!
A1: By modeling it, allowing Ss time to be creative w assigned & non-assigned tasks, giving Ss choice & voice,& letting Ss lead.
Are y'all doing in 3rd? I think that is an awesome thing! My ELA teammate is doing that with our Ss!
A1: . has awesome fine arts collaboration- across all contents; PBL; offering student choice
Create an environment where all ideas are welcomed and encouraged. Ask questions to think outside the box
So important! Flexibility is a must when cultivating creativity!
Give options for showing what you know.
A1 student choice and voice with classroom projects, providing many opportunities for Ss to be creative
Encourage creativity by allowing time for creativity to flourish. Sometimes tough to find the time.
Providing opportunities for students to explore, create & wonder.
This is a great point - we have to be willing to sometimes wait so Ss can flesh out their ideas
A1 design challenges, prototyping, game design, collaboration with peers
A1: In our room that means challenges & assignments w must show obj but Ss choose outcome.
Yes we are! Love it! Little behind with getting it started in my class, we have only brainstormed ideas.
A1: Crativity is incubated in environments of trust. If students feel like they are welcome to create new things, they will.
You have to start somewhere! Good luck with that. I know your kids will love it!
Tonight we had our 1st Student led Conference, had us lose some parents due to power but overall a success
A1: Allow Ss the opportunities to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways rather than with just pencil and paper
A1. Giving students the freedom and opportunities to express their creativity.
You should definitely try it! My 1st graders β€οΈit!
YES. https://t.co/Yb5FbqiXpn
A1: Crativity is incubated in environments of trust. If students feel like they are welcome to create new things, they will.
A1 Allowing Ss and staff to contribute their ideas even if it means only using a small piece as a contribution. #
Bust out of the box! I love it, friend!
I'm interested in this! Looks fun!
This is huge. Everyone must be allowed at the table. https://t.co/QBQS2C5wFy
A1 Allowing Ss and staff to contribute their ideas even if it means only using a small piece as a contribution. #
Echo on everyone else's STUDENT CHOICE...it comes back to their agency in the stuff they're learning.
Ss design a spacecraft, 3D print, & "pitch" to a team of engineers :)
A1 provide Ss with voice/choice and authentic audiences for their products. Make your lesson relevant to real world
A1: Modeling is so important bc it shows Ss risks are welcome. Also cool to see Ss use one of you ideas in a new way.
Choice is important https://t.co/YjwVFyoRPD
A1 student choice and voice with classroom projects, providing many opportunities for Ss to be creative
That is AWESOME! I'm trying out my first in about 2 weeks. Excited :)
Modeling is key! https://t.co/bYiuF8muEC
A1: By modeling it, allowing Ss time to be creative w assigned & non-assigned tasks, giving Ss choice & voice,& letting Ss lead.
Really valuable - thanks for bringing up the openness of staff ideas, too.
Even if it's something as simple as designing a group investigation and letting them go at their own pace...they get creative!
WONDERFUL! What's your project?! :)
Amazing how interested Ss get when things can be self-paced!
I'm here! HS science @ knightdale
Okay I will troll all these awesome A1 responses later jeeesh so awesome π! Time for Q2!
What would this look like in a math classroom?
Thanks. It's so true. just mentioned "modeling." It starts with us
Taking a quick break to read a bedtime story! Be right back!!
Girl, is an AWESOME math teacher resource! Glad you're asking him questions :)
this is gonna get yall π₯π₯ How do we stifle creativity in public education? How do we stop those patterns!?
A1 creativity is all about personalizing the activity. Let students put a little bit of themselves in it
Unit incorporating human body systems with prosthetic limb design and development. Ss will build a model prosthetic!
Agreed! Creativity is just as much about the process as it is the product! https://t.co/YmC63cUXx6
Even if it's something as simple as designing a group investigation and letting them go at their own pace...they get creative!
Just finished that! Good luck! π
A2: Stifle = Standardized Testing
A2 Sometimes, I think standards can get in the way of creativity.
Q2 https://t.co/X9tTbqQIka
this is gonna get yall π₯π₯ How do we stifle creativity in public education? How do we stop those patterns!?
A2: Easy...assessments! Tests do NOT encourage . Not sure how to stop that pattern, but I'm excited for the idea!
A1: creativity is scary for kids there is so much that could be judged as "bad" by their peers gotta make it safe and ok to try
A2. We stifle by accepting "the way we've always done it" thinking in education. We create more by encouraging Ss voice & choice
A2 having too many activities that have only have one answer or path
A2: Yikes...tracking and expecting students to fit in these molds- hold high expectations, y'all! Fear of out-of-seatwork=no good
A2 Projects that R really recipes Worksheets. Rushing because there isnt enough time It's their only time. Let's make it great
A2:Cookie cutter projects, worksheets, routine repetitive projects each year. Also by not taking risks & being creative ourselves.
A2 A heavy focus on testing & competition that's more intense than necessary stifle creativity since people wanna 1-up each other
A2 Too much teacher led, teacher talk. Students need to lead and collaborate!
A2 Standardized testing.... oops did I say that? Not differentiating instruction. Expecting same product from every S
A2: too many times we resort to the status quo of old school teaching. S's learning has changed- need to be engaged
A2: (2): Also, the most creative kids are too often punished for being off-task...
A2: Creativity is stifled by "Telling" Students to do and not "Inviting" Students to do.
A2 Also pacing guides..cause teacher panic and the need to be "on track" -makes Ts less likely to allow Ss to guide the learning!
A2: The belief that every kid is supposed to learn the same way at the same rate because NO.
A2. We stifle by accepting "the way we've always done it" thinking in edu. We enhance by fostering Ss voice & choice culture.
A2: Grades, testing, & fast paced curriculum stifle too. Stop by letting Ss explore, learn, show learning own way, set own goals.
Good point, Hannah. "Coverage" often becomes wrongful synonym for learning https://t.co/yOOR1UF72X
A2 Also pacing guides..cause teacher panic and the need to be "on track" -makes Ts less likely to allow Ss to guide the learning!
A2: Limiting collaboration, short time for decision making as a student, standardized testing ......
Yes! I got in contact with through my coaches! Great resource :)
ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ» I found this to be very challenging with our projects "it kinda fits here or here...right?"
A1: by encouraging students to express themselves through art, music, and crafts. Also by using open e⦠https://t.co/ZCuy8OnON2
Okay here we grow!!! In what ways do we encourage creativity in our classrooms? In our schools? π€
Yes, creating culture of learners is so important. Encouraging climate increases creativity. https://t.co/gKOGagb8Sy
A1: creativity is scary for kids there is so much that could be judged as "bad" by their peers gotta make it safe and ok to try
This is always gets me because I want to give more time for exploring & reflecting but w/ such little time it's hard
standards get in the way of a lot of things
A2: Not encouraging draft ideas! Sometimes the first idea isn't the best but it leads to better ones. Always encourage!
A2 grades stifle creativity because they focus on 1 solution
agreed! It's so frustrating & sad at times. We feel pushed & our creativity stifled bc of this too.
Was just talking about this w today. We go a mile wide & an inch deep in middle school.
Oh, YAY! Glad you were part of ; I'm a secondary coach :) Can't wait to see how your project goes!
A2: time and resources are always a challenge, but collaboration is key.
A2: By not modeling it ourselves in lesson and curriculum design.
A2: Expressing creativity takes time, we often aren't willing to think outside the box to make time for creativity experiences
YES! I could spend an entire year teaching Earth/space science if they'd let me :(
A reason I love SBG. No struggling for extra points Master the standard, show what you know
Right, but then what happens if we take away standards completely? Shouldn't there be SOME baseline for Ss?
A2. By limiting our students with rules and policies that are no longer relevant in today's classroom.
A2- we need to also look at assessment. Ss should have multiple opportunities to show proficiency.
(I think about this a lot and am always open to hearing others' opinions about the topic)
And...sometimes the best ideas are the "worst" ideas at the start! Have Ss brainstorm worst ideas, too! https://t.co/wNPISix7yu
A2: Not encouraging draft ideas! Sometimes the first idea isn't the best but it leads to better ones. Always encourage!
Thankful we have creative time built into schedule!!
A2 We stifle creativity when we fail 2 celebrate effort. Not saying give every1 a trophy, but give them some excitement 4 trying
Alrighty yall! Let's tackle How do we teach creativity!? Or, can you!?
Fear of failing & fear of change stifles creativity & opportunity to grow. & being out of the box = growth
Celebrate the journey and the learning along the road.
A3: I'm not sure about "teaching" creativity, but rather giving opportunities for it to be exercised and improved upon
YEP! Start small and celebrate often! https://t.co/uJyHIGLtUs
A2 We stifle creativity when we fail 2 celebrate effort. Not saying give every1 a trophy, but give them some excitement 4 trying
This is most true of , for sure. All day long. https://t.co/zg64vxCxNK
YES! I could spend an entire year teaching Earth/space science if they'd let me :(
A3 I don't know if you can teach someone to be creative, but you can teach someone to think creatively
A3 Important to let Ss know that creative doesn't only mean artsy :)
A3: Get. out. of. the. way. Kids can teach *us* more about creativity than we can them.
Yes! For some, any effort is progress in the right direction toward opening the doors of creativity!
minimal baseline. Have starting points
A3 Provide more opportunities, when Ss think flexibly, their creativity grow. Practice breeds growth
Good distinction! Creativity is not JUST a craft. Big misconception. It could be a way of thinking!
A3: Provide examples/rubrics & try to be as open-ended as possible.. Understanding that originality leads to creativity
A3 provide room and model.
A3 Providing opportunities for Ss to be creative, use their imagination with assignments will be best
A3: Teach it? But you can model (hopefully!) & you can teach appreciation...& how to give it the ol' college try!
A3 This is where modeling definitely comes in - Ts show Ss how to consider multiple POVs, find different paths to answer, etc
A3: Creativity can't be forced...or photocopied. Model, model, model--from Ss and Ts! https://t.co/xKx9TRQIqc
Alrighty yall! Let's tackle How do we teach creativity!? Or, can you!?
A3: I think we just need to provide opportunities for Ss to pursue multiple paths - Ss will learn from their experiences
A3: Don't think creativity is taught. The freedom & time to be creative & modeling of creative thinking can spur Ss on.
A3. Creativity is so, so, so much more than being artistic. Everyone has their own gift & talent - we as educators must foster.
A3: This idea ππΌ! Cultivating creative thinking. Providing student voice and choice. Respecting Ss as humans with talents!
A3: I don't think I can teach creativity but I have them exercise it everyday. Choices, not just in art, allow S to be creative.
I am for a Finland model that has some standards
Tell me more. What could be an example of a starting point?
Yes! Open ended to model, create and...grade. Open the box and step outside!
Define creativity explicitly/encourage it, rather than waiting for it to happen.Need to see it to understand it. Mltple. contexts
A3 Reminds me of a quote by "Ur 1st ans may be right but ur 2nd ans may be more interesting." We can teach that!
Hmm, I'll have to look into what their standards are. I agree w/ baselines, just not sure what they should be.
Be specific with the praise, but issue Ss a challenge for next steps. Give Ss something to aim for!
have a level starting platform for all students to start and let them expand from there.
Agreed. Opportunities and encouragement to express creativity. https://t.co/FEc1HEQ0b4
A3: I'm not sure about "teaching" creativity, but rather giving opportunities for it to be exercised and improved upon
Yes!! Being artistic is one very small way to express creativity!
hard to explain in 140 characters
Is there value in having standards? Like how important is it that Ss learn moon phases in 1st, 3rd, & 6th grades?
I like this idea. How does the idea of "accountability" fit into this, I wonder?
only thing kids know for sure is what is a full moon
Definitely! Goal setting is great here. Gotta have action steps to make moves.
Yes! Offer feedback with that excitement. e.g. "I π the effort! How about xyz next time? Or abc?"
You prepare (or find) investigations where Ss work through to discover a concept instead of telling them how to do it.
Yes. Without Standards we would run the risk of Ts only teaching what they like. Ss deserve more.
I did lots of investigation-type stuff in 3rd grade w/ multiplication & division. Very exploratory. (1/2)
The kids were multiplying/dividing without even realizing it at first! (2/2)
A3: I don't feel you can teach creativity but I feel you can encourage students to be unique & express t⦠https://t.co/w8rnAxZn7K
have them explain through learning logs. You can track their understanding
Or "what would you do differently next time?" Leave it open for them to decide.
What do you mean when you say "Ss deserve more" - more of a broad education?
A3.b. The question "what else?" And the statement "Tell me more!" fosters creativity and critical thinking
Yes, practicing strategies that encourage and cultivate creativity is important. https://t.co/FWatyjGL4g

Is there value in reducing standards so Ss can go into more depth w/ material?
Eeeek such good stuff y'all! Time for What is the role of creativity in the 21st century? With 21st century learners!?
A3: I like to say, "I can't wait to see where this challenge is going to take you." Makes learning more adventurous!
That's only if standards are taught previously, yeah? I have Ss w/ no background on topics!
Reminder to let Ss think for themselves. https://t.co/Cy3VXZ1Mst
Or "what would you do differently next time?" Leave it open for them to decide.
yes sometime less is more
A4: Creativity is one of the top qualities desired by employers. We MUST cultivate creative thinking and flexibility in our Ss!

That moment when you realize you completely missed Q4 because you're discussing the validity of standards w/ your PLN
A4: all day, errrryday- that's what it's all about, right? Creative problem solving?
A4 Ss will have 2 creatively solve problems of tomorrow. They will need 2 create, to innovate & probs won't have mult choice ans
A3: don't have that answer, think you can inspire creativity & guide, otherwise innate
A4: Creativity has the same value in the 21st century as it did in the 20th, 19th...
Schools are just finally valuing it now.
A4 A skill that is used in almost any job now, definitely being creative thinkers and problem solvers!
A4 creativity encourages.. almost demands critical thinking and that is the skill our Ss need most of all!
A4 Creative thinking & problem solving is a skill that will NEVER go out of style; it's needed for EVERY potential job/endeavor!
A4: Creativity & Critical Thinking are key! We are preparing students for jobs that don't exist / to brave new frontiers π

creativity is about celebrating interests and applying them to content
A4. Embracing genuine 4C school culture. Students so engaged in owning their own learning they're not even aware they're learning
A4: Because real-world problems don't have a single approach and a single right answer that you can find in the back of the book
! We have always needed creative people! I mean someone had to think of chats. π https://t.co/1JtPMx7SiY
A4: Creativity has the same value in the 21st century as it did in the 20th, 19th...
Schools are just finally valuing it now.
Creativity is about looking at things in a new way, about making discoveries, and daring to try, reflect and try again
Creativity means moving beyond getting the right ans. Encouraging Ss to find a diff. answer to the same, or different, question.
more time to get deeper. More freedom to apply interest areas to show what they really know
A4: Creativity is what gets us beyond the 3Rs.. It is foundational to learning ...and living. https://t.co/yXAEn0c8Cj
Thanks Phil! ππ½π You are welcome back anytime to explore w my kiddos!
Creativity encourages lifelong learners. Willingness to create, express & discover drives innovation/prob solv.-future ready.
A4 that is how cancer is going to be cured. Outside the box thinking is critical to a student's future
A challenge I face with encouraging creativity is Ss urge to say "I'm finished!" Trying to teach them to extend and innovate!
A4 Creativity is what makes today's Ss able to face challenges of jobs that haven't been created yet
Yes, Courage! We need to encourage courage! Taking risks in a safe environment. https://t.co/KVTqKVYZ3u
So agree with you. When we encourage that creativity, we encourage courage in our students to keep creating.β¦ https://t.co/BptpvJz47Q
yes, to solve problems you have to be a creative thinker
Yes! Yes! Yes! https://t.co/pKEjNOrgSw
A4 that is how cancer is going to be cured. Outside the box thinking is critical to a student's future
Remember to bring your creativity to your classroom because why you are creative your students will follow
A4 Without creativity we wouldn't be having this chat, online, w/twitter, w/ this diverse group of ppl working together in edu.
we are an increasingly mobile society...think about the disjointed education some Ss would endure
Boom Shakalaka Shakalaka Shakalaka Boom π₯! https://t.co/xxVIVh7UMS
A4 Without creativity we wouldn't be having this chat, online, w/twitter, w/ this diverse group of ppl working together in edu.
filling dots in a bubble sheet is bot going to get the job done
How awesome is it to be chatting with other educators in our area, all excited about encouraging !
A4. Creativity means to solve problems with new and innovative approaches.
filling dots in a bubble sheet is not going to get the job done
π€that sounds familiar...π
Okay we have to squeeze in one more! How can creativity bring us closer together in our communities!?
Most definitely; I like the continuity standards provide for all Ss. But what if there was just a base?
Thank you, enjoyed the discussion. Going to go create for tomorrow.
A4: Creativity is one way we can enhance and transform our learning, striving to every day. https://t.co/uXlI3wxc4T
A4 Without creativity we wouldn't be having this chat, online, w/twitter, w/ this diverse group of ppl working together in edu.
Just a base level skill: "Ss think creatively about problems." - general & can be applied to interests
omg you came to the chat party!! π!
A5: A culture of breeds collaboration and sharing and GROWING!
Guys, Chuck and Blair are reconciling on Gossip Girl Great convo!
A4: creativity can blossom into many different things, twitter, cures, books, it plays a huge role in 21st-century learning
Creativity can be difficult because there is no right ans. About pursuing one's own leadings = Risk.
