#aussieED Archive
#aussieED was founded on the belief that all teachers, and students, should have unlimited access to Professional Development, on their own terms, to improve their teaching, their schools and change the lives of the students they encounter. Since then, we have embarked on a mission to reach educators, not only in Australia but, all around the globe. We want to smash the barriers that prevent teachers from easily connecting and learning with each other. To that end, we have developed a regular Ed-chat each Sunday on twitter at #aussieED. The chat allows all teachers, leaders, administrators and all those connected with education to meet on an unbiased platform and discuss the real issues that effect what happens in classrooms everywhere. Our chats are authentic because we are real teachers walking the same walk that so many do everyday.

Pressure to take on responsibilities that should not always be with schools.

Q2. Write letters to your local MP telling them you support Gonski funding.
A2) we have to CARE for kids! Then the learning follows!
A2: Allow for dynamic teaching and individual learning choices to suit the learner. It’s not universal yet.
A2 ask lots of "why are we doing this this way?" in the hope the answer will trigger reflection
Often Ps get in the way of Ss' attendance due to differing priorities.
A2 Embracing risk & listening to student need
Live and learn ! https://t.co/9le0vJHsUm
A2 Establish the conditions that allow/foster students to become agentic life-long learners in touch with their passions
Remember we are teaching students who will be living in world with jobs that do exist yet
a2: Keep learning! About our Students, About what works, about tech, about being balanced, about our subjects, about ourselves.

A2 Allow l'ship to make best choices for their Ts and Ss without repercussions from regional leaders.
A1 more than one word: but screwed by teacher accreditation requirements.
A2 using evidence based practices- differentiation, explicit instruction...
I agree and work back from this!
Jon here - Perth Hills 6-12! A2 do things first and ask forgiveness later :) Try new things!
Maslow's, belonging to school, authentic assessment , teaching to point of need, teaching with a growth mindset
Just wish I could do the young bit better! Lol!
Sorry for my late arrival!
A2: Do these things together as much as we can: read, watch, learn, do, share. Especially with our vulnerable young teachers.
A2 collaborate and focus on Ss engagement
A2) Introduce social development of the child, into the curriculum
And act on it
Q2: There r so many.. main things 4 me would b student-centered, supportive & challenging learning
A2. I also think we need 2 work w/ Ss 2 have them as co-drivers of curriculum design
A2: Try to get away from the 'us and them' with Ss (esp. in high school) - take their ideas on board, they have some great ones!
Build a culture where we we see Ss not just content and tailor curriculum to individual needs https://t.co/JBgLxYYfbl
A2 Keep students as our sole focus - not be enveloped by bureaucracy and school politics
would love to see more of this happening! 'Our' students rather than 'my' students.
G'day eric. welcome to our home
A2 - reimagine the use of time and space
you should get chatting now 😉
A2 - Focus on how students learn, enhance practices, take risks and move away from the mindset ‘We’ve always done it this way.’
A.2 also remember you teach people individual students. They're the focus, not always the content and data
A2: caring & supporting not only the child but the family when situations arise. A holistic approach is needed 2 improve learning
Fav quote: Maslow before Blooms https://t.co/H78DcXtbi5
Maslow's, belonging to school, authentic assessment , teaching to point of need, teaching with a growth mindset
Where Ss create their own IEP's :)
Indeed. Dare we evoke the C word... Control.
A2 - Stay connected with students and the teaching world at large. We can all learn from each other Ts and Ss.
Definitely! Ss need to feel valued first. There needs to be that trust.
A2 Encourage and embrace change
Agreed, after all it is their learning and they need to drive it. https://t.co/q9YpXL3gRv
A2. I also think we need 2 work w/ Ss 2 have them as co-drivers of curriculum design
A2 The three C's of good teaching and Learning: Collaborate, collaborate and collaborate
Promote engagement, some Ss need some motivation too
be brave enough to realise that for some, the system is broken. Might be time for something new?
Thanks, my friend. Great to be here!
employ and encourage teachers who are genuinely PASSIONATE about their role
A2. Assess less and de-clutter the curriculum
Ss really do get the rough end of the stick in education.
A2: be purposeful in all you do, and help students to see purpose in what they do.
A2: ensure each student receives regular, timely & meaningful feedback/feedforward for their learning
I love how that character grew from one joke about running out of letters on the jacket
A2 don't change for the sake of it, if you are good at something keep doing it!
A2: Build trusting relationships, show respect, observe and listen.
A2: Show Ss you care about them as a person - not just what they do at school.
hard part about that, is there is no time in the schedule to do that anymore (or at least not up here)
BOSTES is getting feedback fill I. The survey https://t.co/0DI3UtsOiu
be brave enough to realise that for some, the system is broken. Might be time for something new?
A2: stop testing primary school students it is getting ridiculous
Good point, everything does not need to change. A2
I correct myself when ever I make this mistake. Going to ask the kids to do it too
Well said on the eve of national testing.
because we are a bit stuck in old ways of doing stuff that do not serve our students ultimately, in my opinion
A2. Ts need 2 become activists & advocates in Education. Need 2b more vocal & active in our own profession
A2 The next gen of teachers need to move away from self focus (my classroom) to learning focus (their learning environment)
Other Ts are our greatest resource, have to work together
thankfully I don't lose any of my classes for NAPLAN this week - but I can't imagine them being excited!!
I like to think we all do however with leadership often comes expectations that can fall beyond the learner
Teacher retention is a huge issue in remote areas! 3 year cycle, if your lucky, of begin Ts. https://t.co/rQG6qaeSvf
A2: Ss centered where they task risks, make mistakes, solve their own problems and create change in their community now.
A2 don't focus solely on covering the syllabus but teach the whole person with real-life problems
A2: Meeting Ss where they are actually at, both academically and emotionally, not where the standards and norms presume they are.
and you are more likely to build strong relationships with Ss that way too!
i'm glad its not just a UK problem, but also sad that it is not just a a UK problem
Maslow was tonight's topic, just did a switch to suit election theme.
teachers are life long change agents if we like it or not!
Exactly, join more networks, like this one and more https://t.co/g8Q1ixrqg9
A2. Ts need 2 become activists & advocates in Education. Need 2b more vocal & active in our own profession
to me relationships are the most important part! You need to get to know your Ss before you can start teaching them!
opportunities and possibilities that they can achieve. I am excited every day I go to work to see what learning happens
Welcome to the South Pacific mate! A2
A2 Included community members in our classrooms. I'm no expert on architecture, but I can find someone who is
A2 ensure sts academic, social & emotional wellbeing are the focus of our why
A2 We can focus on longer term development as opposed to short term assessment.
You've got to be positive in this profession. Too much negativity out there on education as a whole.
I don't teach thos elevels but I used to have to run it at yr 9. Torture.
best thing a mentor said. It will take 5 years
It's a good place to be! :)
Ugh! You too?! I was hoping yours was the ONE country that didn't... Sad to hear
Thanks, my friend! Great to be here!
A2Create Ss tht are motivated engaged achieving self directed independ excited risk takers owng lrning4 themselves nt test results
So needs or language to explain needs? What's the answer?
agreed! If the relationship is there the learning will occur. it all needs to be a natural progression
We can also use, really use student voice! A2
A1 Education is transformative
We need 2b more outspoken politically in community too :) Need 2 educate community about what our jobs really entail
How early is this for you?
agree! aim for holistic rather than disconnected
A2: Collaboration with other teachers. I'd like some more time to share student work, personally.
So true, take pride in what we do and celebrate our collaborations for student success https://t.co/TgxJL7vFNx
A2. Ts need 2 become activists & advocates in Education. Need 2b more vocal & active in our own profession
wen need to evolve not necessarily change
A3 we teach students to take tests !
or even better still "our learning environment!" :)
I agree and we need to promote our Ts a lot more in the public arena!
A3: Connections made between classes around the world, learning together
I remember clearly standing at my blackboard, in my 7th yr of teaching, going 'Yes! I can teach!' https://t.co/kiuJDrWOwn
best thing a mentor said. It will take 5 years
A3 Call necessary skills 21st century skills even though 2000 was 16 years ago.
It's 6:30 am on the east coast of the US.
A3 understanding the content
For sure, join the IEU or Ts Fed https://t.co/nYCfggIhyL
We need 2b more outspoken politically in community too :) Need 2 educate community about what our jobs really entail
That was very fun! messy but Fun! :)
A3 share ideas on Twitter
I agree and such evolution must be in response to students more than anyone.
A3 create a safe environment we kids can be kids
A3. Nationally teachers achieve a lot with little!
A3: We are beginning to communicate better, often though better communication outside our schools than within.
A2. Teach kids not curriculum
Good evening apologies for the lateness.
A3. I think we have great standards for Ts, Ss and the profession as a whole.
Thank you .... https://t.co/cvRIM61USh
A3 Call necessary skills 21st century skills even though 2000 was 16 years ago.
Q3. Wow - you r on fire Brett - Care - we care about our Ss, our colleague Ts, about what we are teaching and where we are going.
A3: many things, realising that we have to change in order for our Ss to thrive - learning is different for them
Glenys here from Cheviot NZ
so is sport and an apprenticeship. Why is that important
I would pay to see a Sphero Art Collection :)
We collaborate so well! AussieEd chats being the perfect example!🙌🏼
Better late than never! Evening all. Ben from Melb
CARE for our students and their futures! A3
A3: Pulling in the latest researched based curriculum delivery, educational theories.
No they got us too. Clare did the SAT yesterday. In at 7:45 am. Out at 1:40pm!
A3 We really care about the learning of the kids. In Aus, I also think we're deeply committed to innovation
Clear defined expectations for students and beginning teachers
A3. with the power of Twitter & Facebook, I have shared more & have had more shared w me in the last 2 years than my whole career!
A3 in spite of my neg.posts here, more than any other generation of Ts, we have embraced the future of our business.
A3: many new educational grassroot movements is popping up, wanting to change education bottum up
A3 - Relationships, support and Care are strong. Australian Ed. do these well
A2 We can chose to believe that teaching to the test ultimately reduces test scores, in addition to the other damage.
A3: Like wrote, we set very good standards for teachers.
Now we are talking about improvement and reflection becomes an important step.
A3: We value and invest in job-embedded professional learning...learning at the desks of students, collaborative inquiry.
A4 lots of innovation, student-centres and
A3 Realising you are as only as good as the school down the road.
Let's go even further, assess at all? A3
A3: Being negative, I would say that we test consistently well! Being positive, I would say that we do like to try new things.
A3 STEM classes are a real positve. Many will argue it should be STEAM but that's for another chat https://t.co/25ihtl0cYZ
A3: We connect and share and celebrate better than ever!
and all parties in the learning context need to reflect and often!
We could have a Google Slide that we all add Class Sphero art pieces to the one :)
A3 I think we are doing assessment for learning well, but the need to report against government standards compromises this.
Yep! Hopefully will get something in that region for the next job! Fingers crossed.
A3 My experience: Meeting emotional/social needs of our Ss. Understanding positive psychology in schools. https://t.co/3VnngeAcwl
Ts are the best learners, or r they?
test for point of need. Could improve on using that data though
Some sectors you are very correct other ???? https://t.co/qQda5hMMBg
A3 - Relationships, support and Care are strong. Australian Ed. do these well
A3 We are beginning to use the tools we have to share across schools and systems, open collaboration for quality learning
A3: willing to take risks w/ our pedagogical practices to engage & challenge sts
A3: We continually reach out for better, more effective ways to reach all students. We go to them v. wait 4 them 2 come 2 us
Great stuff, once the students feels trusted and valued they will fly academically! A3
A3: We are good at recognising the many different skills and attributes that contribute to learning and learning to harness them.
A3 communication skills- now more than ever before.
Hey I made it! Back from usual Sunday evening work sesh and preparing for a week of Y12 retreats!
A3 Our being in this place at this time is a real improvement in our prof. Great to share ideas with all you great people.
Agreed. Ss (and Ts) need feedback to grow - "output, output, output" leads to failure and disconnect https://t.co/2miF4VVPzZ
A2: ensure each student receives regular, timely & meaningful feedback/feedforward for their learning
in my experience…that hasn’t been the case unfortunately
A3: Professional realisation that schooling must to change for us to teach so-called 21st century skills better.
Q3: Learner differentiation, relevant, flexible and engaging through digital pedagogy...this is ongoing and evolving
A3 We attract quality people to become teachers.
A3 We see the person while politicians just see the student.
YES! You love, care, teach, discipline, worry about kids...same thing in my book! Even have Ss call us mom! Ha!
We realise that we Ts need to keep on learning along side our Ss. We are not the fount of all knowledge. https://t.co/D7amCxx1JR
Have we adapted to high stakes tests like in an appropriate way
Mine too! It makes me twitch!
communication is the key to life
A3 - Transparency. Having open classrooms to share with colleagues and the world.
A3 We try new things, take risks and encourage our students to do the same
A3: I think we are all doing it with the best intentions for our Ss
A2 question ourselves.... always ask ourselves why
A3: We have PLC in our dept. & we share cross content, we just share better. Problem solve better, we strive to do better!
i rather say they only see a number in a spreadsheet..
A3 Ts who take risks w learning are becoming the norm. Ts adapt easier to change given how fast tech is moving nowadays.
Nice but problematic what of the non-engaged, diff, strategies needed? A3
A2 Collaborate, consider student uniqueness, remember that one way isn't the only way
A3) Caring. Students in general feel loved at school
A3 We give teachers freedom and autonomy.
Now you're talking!! What's an "A" anyway?
Nice, I was being subtle, maybe too subtle LOL.
maybe a few? It's like everywhere, some do some don't
A3 - Along with Caring is Sharing and Communicating - we are doing that well tonight.
I think we are sharing best practice better.
A2: Give education back to educators
It's the key to teaching today! Preparing our Ss for the future! We dont need to know facts thats what is 4
Is there another way to think about schooling? This is an interesting read before our Monday. https://t.co/zWmrMI8dHK
Is there another way to think about schooling? This is an interesting read before our Monday. https://t.co/ZuXrh5Y5JY
I agree, I say to my students, A only stands for awesome nothing more.
and don't burn through the curriculum at a rate of knots. Give the kids the basic skills to succeed
.A3 Ts are excellent at multitasking. Relationship makers, carers educators, facilitators, councillors, listeners,safety,sports...
I think how quickly these changes have come helps. Still, for many the words "kicking" and "screaming" come to mind.
the bigger question is have our govts adapted?
Yep! Overwhelmingly Teachers really really want to improve. For themselves and their Students!
it's my "job" to be the grumpy straight forward rebel around here ;P
A3: I think we (teachers and schools) are all doing it with the best intentions for our Ss
A3. We connect with others - Ss, Ps, Ts, communities - all over the world!
some adapt to change well, while others get farther behind. Leads to bigger disconnect between Ts
Keep going Leonie, you've done about 10% of the list! LOL A3
A3: Teachers as risk-takers - not being afraid to make mistakes. Learning with the students.
True. But in my experience, both here in Aust & in US… is that majority stick 2 what they know & r resistant 2 change.
STEM or STEAM both bring integration and that makes learning life relevant rather than about academics https://t.co/voNjYEySAJ
A3 STEM classes are a real positve. Many will argue it should be STEAM but that's for another chat https://t.co/25ihtl0cYZ
I wish switch grumpy for perceptive!
On the flip side - have the tests been adapted in an appropriate way for our current way of teaching and learning?
A3 At a teacher level, we're very good at sharing expertise and assisting peers. At a school level, less so.
Jumping in late with A1- busy!
A3: that we respond to the needs of our students we actually acknowledge that ultimately we are there for them
this is getting better every year
A3. Connecting within and outside our schools, communities & countries
Nice and they see it...even if eventually. A3
this is vital. The hidden curriculum in schools is the most important part of education
Oh Good Lord! Praying for day Ss can show portfolio and say "this is me, what I've done, what I'm interested in"
yep, playing the game of the system HSC and Uni entry
in some ways I agree, I often think smaller class sizes can be detrimental to learning, dynamics can be wrong
A3 I see good practice being shared widely and willingly and love it
but does the research stack up for your students
hattie claims a lot of things! doens't mean he is right even though many think he is
So true, just as in real life, those who feel care for and about flourish, no different in school.
Learning requires change and change is uncomfortable for many teachers
A3: We network like never b4 & social media helps, technology helps. no need to reinvent wheel, we find someone doing it
A3 Much more collaboration than in past. We are also starting to listen to My Collaboration page https://t.co/h53AvN6k1C
A3. If I was to be completely unhelpful I would say "point at things". But I see meaningful differentiation on a daily basis.
A4. If it were run by people who had a recent experience in the classroom!!!
that is so true. We 'preach' to the converted and leave the rest behind.
A2. Students need to understand that failing is a part of gaining experience
Let's DM after ... I know you'll love it
A3 I think as teachers we adapt very well. Things are constantly thrown at us, and we just get on with the job
we do this every day. Learning intentions and success criteria
by being grumpy i hopefully change or open the perspective of others :)
Adapted by understanding they aren't as 'high stakes' as society makes them out to be
A3. (cont.)... I think that more than anything defines how different things were to possibly even a decade ago.
A3.1: We are showing incredible capacity to try new things relying on peer tutoring
whilst wearing multiple hats and juggling responsibilities!
. Only had 140 https://t.co/u69GAgJjE5 . At my sm sch I'm in charge of 11 areas egMaths Inquiry ICT BOT rep NZEI..etc
I told her to focus on her class work. She had assignments this week to worry about instead.
Google hangout. Anyone used it in education? Better option than Skype?
Depends on what you do with the money Small class or more time for PD sadly tends to lrg class little PD https://t.co/KUzESeBuCL
A4: Consistency in approach/pedagogy - and a system that better caters for individual learning needs be they low or high. 1/2
Can only speak from experience, I'm starting to see change, even with the nay-sayers. What do you think Matt?
A4 - More time and more money - they make everything better.
I would like to c smaller class sizes AND purposeful feedback vs just smaller class. practice makes the difference.
A4. Disconnect funding from standardized testing. Funding should be a given not a test.
you are only as good as the people in your school yard
A4. A targeted focus on engagement, play & discovery in learning through STEAM ed equipping for learning beyond the school.
Remove all textbooks, teacher whiteboards. Student permission to request T silence in terms of class instructions. A4
A4: Shred all testing for Primary age children, why put students and teachers under so much pressure https://t.co/HKDuqa3cyR
A4. High speed internet free into every classroom! And high quality training for teachers to use it!
A4 - Curriculum posed as problems, questions and challenges rather than isolationist subject delivery.
A4 We need to recognize that our Ss come to us very different than ever B4, They have experiences and skills we are not ready for.
A4: Longer lunches and recesses! Kids need to play!
We all need to do this more and often.
A4 halve the curriculum. Tighten accreditation improve professionalism
2/2 A4: In saying that, there also needs to be a better approach to teacher upskilling and PD ops. Level playing field helps.
and teachers need to recharge!!
A4: When people listen to the classroom T and S to make change not just global experts who are removed from classrooms
A4. Allow children to be children again. Allow space for play, community and nature to connect 2gether for learning
A4 Less spruikers, more do-ers
A2 Positive school culture. Positive and driven staff first step = effective student learning
A3: In the U.S. depending on the state, the high stakes testing determine whether you graduate HS or not. Out of hand.
A4; that it was possible to for some to take a slow road and those who would go fast could take another "lane" instead of crashes
I think that's awesome! We are seeing some willing to dip their toes. I think it comes with permission to 'fail'
A4. Decent funding and then certainty regarding this funding
A4 Trust - trusting those who teach & lead. Trusting those who learn
A4 - Loaded Q! So many things can be improved. Funding. Equality. Curriculum. Social awareness. The list could go on…
Do you think this is something teachers can agitate for themselves? I would argue this must start from leadership.
A4 Greater independence for teachers and schools, curriculum focused on thinking and learning not knowing prescribed stuff
Had to turn the laptop on, the phone wasn't working!
agree, go with the flow, move with the times, all that. Ts need to be at willing for change with their comfort zone
ZPD would require formative assessment nothing more. Good point!
Adhere to this idea 100% It is almost 'all we need'!!!! https://t.co/38KMyupHo3
A4; that it was possible to for some to take a slow road and those who would go fast could take another "lane" instead of crashes
A4: More teachers, less teaching. WAY more specialised support staff. Better and comprehensive RTI plus PD in teaching with tech.
talk! Champion your profession
A4 Politics: an Education Minister who was a teacher. School: all Ts & Ps focused on Sts not test results https://t.co/fglTnSlHWe
A4 Trust in the teachers. Give more freedom in what and how teachers work.
A4 - More real world fun genuine learning that is applicable for the Ss you teach not a standardise 1 size fits all curriculum.
A4: Consistent and clear communication, deep commitment to learning (educators and Ss), more smiles and laughter.

1 of my districts has done this year with great success! Kids love the multidisciplinary projects! https://t.co/4ul3UlxCaz
A4 - Curriculum posed as problems, questions and challenges rather than isolationist subject delivery.
Sure and yes. It also has a little to do with the school itself - budgets and $ distribution too.
Vice versa too. Ts need to have a culture of getting S feedback on their performance regularly.
hehehe! No arguments here!
Equality for starters. I'm sad my students miss out on innovative digital opps because we lack the money and resources
We take and take and take. We're too soft in terms of standing up for ourselves. A4
A4) Admin that valued input, Ss are empowered, able to learn at own pace, things that interest them, more personalized
A4 policy driven by pedagogy not votes. Innovative educators with proven practice consulting on teaching SS NOT content
A4 Pt2 - Time in the curriculum to do things well and build deep understandings rather than teach quickly, assess poorly move on
grades mean nothing feedback is everything
A4. Time...to learn, explore, think, build relationships, create, grow, fail and have fun!! https://t.co/cNF6vzg7I3
A4 We need to reframe teaching as expert discovers of what works, as opposed to implementers of what works.
A4 a greater focus on teacher collaboration and transpancy to build a tight knit teaching community
A4: Less squeezing of every bit of time. More quality planning and pd time. Everything that everyone is listing here!
Placing decisions in the hands and minds of the experts...teachers! A4
This. This big time! https://t.co/NfVpD5ThdS
A4) Admin that valued input, Ss are empowered, able to learn at own pace, things that interest them, more personalized
A4 a willingness for a greater number of teachers to make changes in pedagogy & 2 not be dragged along by change but to drive it
not all textbooks are bad! Used appropriately to support students rather than as main teaching tool...
A4. Remove politics from education. Teachers need to be the experts driving policy and practice
And the front of the room philosophy!
A4 Allow teachers to teach in a way that suits their students best, rather than in a way that's directed by politicians
A4 allowing students to be children
A4. As teaching becomes more demanding we need time to collaborate and connect. Better work conditions to allow this?
A4 Get rid of levelled assessment. Ditch traditional reports in favour of Ss self reflections & do something about T contracts
A4: Public schools funded by property taxes. more $ the district, better ed. We leave our poor behind. MUST CHANGE
A4: Understand how systems in nature work and utilise the communication flows to ensure great ideas spread between classrooms
A4 community education/global thinking
A3, the use of provocations connected with driving questions that help to deconstruct learning outcomes
A4: we could do with a rebranding and increase in the status of the profession.
teachers committing to action research to improve their practice
It's disappointing that the people who make decisions have no teaching experience!
.A4Less testing.More money as sm sch & wth more could have 3D printer robotics etc & so many resources for S lrng opportunities etc
A4: increase the voice of educators to influence decisions made about the direction of education in this country
Good point, remove all teacher-directed use of textbooks, let students choose. A4
a sad state of affairs...
Im sure she did well! Aside from all this testing, it is an exciting time for her 😊
Chi out the latest IEU newsletter https://t.co/t68Y4YEUxS
A4. As teaching becomes more demanding we need time to collaborate and connect. Better work conditions to allow this?
A4 Strategy, structure and culture of each and every school
Hattie's effect table has that as a small effect
So important to make content purposeful
disagree here about whiteboards, can be great for group discussions & explanations. Just allow more ppl to use them
Maybe not guided by political whims of the populous, imagine if medicine worked that way? https://t.co/xueosazNF2
A4. If it were run by people who had a recent experience in the classroom!!!
A4 less input from people who have never taught in a class room
A5: It should be one that has the Ss interest in the centre
Absolutely! getting Ss to have a sense of international mindedness and emapthy is bloody important!
A4: A change in focus from producing uni Ss to 'growing' modern citizens. Ss that think rather than regurgitate
ah now you are talking, yep, I think somewhere between 25 and 30 is ideal :-)
Interesting that we say that we need to allow for more play, yet schools are placing more pressure on T to run clubs at breaks.
true. We need others to continue to do the research
Timing is always a challenge. Much to cover in limited span. Perhaps rethinking syllabus content is a way forward?
A4 We need school leaders and teachers to articulate student learning and development in ways that test scores can't.
Honestly, I think this leads to teachers being letter writers to MPs. Especially since the election is on.
A4: We need curriculum content that complements 21st century learners interests and needs
A5. Teachers R policy makers. Communities govern local schools according 2 their needs
A5: We need to be more responsive and better able to reflect our local contexts.
Preach the word! https://t.co/TeINUCcyNT
A4 Get rid of levelled assessment. Ditch traditional reports in favour of Ss self reflections & do something about T contracts
there is a question here;
Do digital apps help to reduce inequality in education?
They are another learning tool, just like devices etc.
A5: One where the most qualified through experience/education get the position, not those who navigate politics the best.
Great ideas tonight, looking forward to the 'in real life' version at
My students love the connections made.. fits right in with our learning
A4 Teacher grads in schools for longer. 4 years of hands on apprenticeship instead of learning how to do 4 page lesson plans
A5 inclusive, equitable, achievable, fun
Q4:Teaching dat assess students based on growth via learning experience not jus 2 regurgitate what the teacher has said
One simple change, cost no $, make learning the key and not how quickly Ss learn it!Develop Learners not separate them b/c speed
I know I said it was something we do well 😀
I agree. A focus on the how, rather than the what would be a good start.
.Come & work for our ed system
Trying to convince my H/Ts to let me remove the grade and just use the criteria! Still some walls https://t.co/HRkQ3Z7oeb
grades mean nothing feedback is everything
Love it. I had a room without a front - was lovely. I try to make mine not have that now.
A5. State walls & differences R broken down & we become a true national prof that support each other 2 meet local needs
A5 Something that takes all the best of what's gone before & none of the bad, coupled with a spirit of adventure & curiosity
A5 - It should be differentiated for Ss need, location, ability, aptitude, strengths, loves and desires not handed out in a PDF
A4: For some, though. I wonder if the system is beyond 'better'. Is better enough? How would we judge better?
A5 Flexible, personalised, connected, meaningful, in context, timely, reflective, student centred, responsive,
how do they affect the every day classroom? We don't see it
Oh yeah and I sat with the students, no teacher desk!
A5. I so want to say differentiated for both teachers and students! Lol! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
A5; dreaming tracks 2.0 to use a aussie term :)
Exactly. That's when the need for the soapbox is strongest.
a5: Students are empowered to play a real role in their education. Real inquiry with real world application
Yes!!! Man I hate text books!
A5: Natural, feed forward learning, learner centred, evidence based awesomeness
beautifully said https://t.co/X7CpQ5Sdu3
A5 Flexible, personalised, connected, meaningful, in context, timely, reflective, student centred, responsive,
A5 I would love to see schools everywhere where I would be excited to send my kids.
and the why too. Often times Ss are presented with the blatant irrelevance of so many topics.
When there's no front, everyone is equal including the teachers.
I am desperate to get rid of mine. I use it for the S - they can sit there.
A5: What if the system of tomorrow is a "learning system" rather than an "education system"? What does that change?
A4: Grade level learning shud be thing of the past, we need to teach on instructional level until mastery.
A4 let's start with re-directing the ridiculous amount of money spent on NAPLAN testing back to schools
That would make a massive difference to the quality of learning and level of engagement https://t.co/Q3jhwPhxR3
A4 - Curriculum posed as problems, questions and challenges rather than isolationist subject delivery.
A4 more money, time & space, less onerous paperwork, more willingness to work, think, learn & teach outside the box.
A3: Teacher collab. Social media platforms provide limitless sharing opps b/w educators.
A5 Teachers get a new name... learning coach? Ss become entrepreneurs in area of interest (if applicable) & schools are open 24h
A5: more , less teaching by "subject"; more performance-based assessment; less high-stakes testing... https://t.co/x0GhrbR9bL
again. https://t.co/6ditqk90ft
That would make a massive difference to the quality of learning and level of engagement https://t.co/Q3jhwPhxR3
A4 - Curriculum posed as problems, questions and challenges rather than isolationist subject delivery.
A5 students are self directed and motivated to learn.
Hi Steve, I love how students use whiteboards, tweet was referring to teacher whiteboards, monopolised with T content.
A5. Open, collaborative, engaging, challenging, fun, exciting, Ss centred inquiry learning, globally connected & real world
Respect in the community, value for our roles. One glimpse at comments in any online article about Ed tells this.
A5: Flexible, able to meet the needs of all learners, with T given opportunities to adequately learn and cater for them.
my Study of Religion I gave "Ethics Matters" book by Peter Vardy to read if they want
actually a focus on purpose might also reduce workload for Ts. Some things Ts are required to do are meaningless
you seem to be good at having view about importance of student centered learning -that's my view from following
A5 in this system there would be time for all to go at their own pace, no rush or waiting for other to catch up
A5 - We would test based on our students and their personal achievements not how they rank on one day, on one test - kids B kids
A5: Guarantee a futuristic teacher & student-designed school would be a great design thinking challenge.WiFi everywhere, no bells!
and some have trauma we have never experienced
A5. Modular, and facilitated by people as keen to learn as the students are.
Agree Involve the students and parents. Test scores do not reflect what students know. https://t.co/gwez66m91U
A4 We need school leaders and teachers to articulate student learning and development in ways that test scores can't.
Agree, we need to become researchers and actively publish our knowledge of great pedagogy https://t.co/hha96D2Bet
A4 We need to reframe teaching as expert discovers of what works, as opposed to implementers of what works.
Oh man, that would be awesome! I'd get better at skiing too!
A5. My real answer! Genuine journey of sharing all things human learning in order to create a more efficient future for the world!
Ill share linkn tomorrow just setting up slides now
Valid when students see them appropriate, great reference txt, less so for current learning
More time to plan! (She says, sitting planning a bit of 'teacher input' for retreat week!)
A5: I think it will be flexible. It has to be. Cater to all Ss rather than just some or even most. Schools should look different.
Interactive WBs are not really interactive https://t.co/brDUx2UqlS
Hi Steve, I love how students use whiteboards, tweet was referring to teacher whiteboards, monopolised with T content.
A5 there would be time and resources to be flexible for all
Thanks for MY A.M. chat & the networking follows. Time to make the coffee! Happy Mother's Day to all moms! xoxo
A5 Fully facilitated classrooms, modelling over lecturing. Personalised with independent and curious learners
A5 a system that is not about compliance and conformity but rather focus is learning to learn
Agreed. Including elements of reporting. If a T wants a template to write comments u know something messed up. 😆
Who the heck sits at a desk? I just need a cushion; usually spot me sprawled on floor
A5 I just want to see equal opportunities for all students and teachers
one that listens to student need and adapts with the student through research and collaboration
A5 it is not a system but a culture of learning. Systems standardise!
A5: flexible, accessible, adaptable and equitable.
A4 take a look at the education system in Finland and let the teachers have some say on the delivery of the curriculum
See, that's what you get for caring about their learning. Oh well, never to late to start for 2017.
Ha, nah, they just like sitting there. It’s just another learning area in the room.
https://t.co/YlVMKyfRGj
A5: What if the system of tomorrow is a "learning system" rather than an "education system"? What does that change?
A5 - agile, flexible and co-constructed by students with system wide decisions made by school based personnel
Allowing teachers to use local knowledge improves outcomes esp for disadvantaged communities https://t.co/O6XUteYeGR
A4 Allow teachers to teach in a way that suits their students best, rather than in a way that's directed by politicians
Don't have bells at my school. Took some getting used to but now it seems normal! Improved my time management too!
yeah, awesome for them to have a reliable source at hand for research
.I never sit at mine. Its 4 ipads & reading bks etc.I sit all rnd the room whre Ss need me
A6: Imagine if a school had all Teachers from twitter in one place!
A6. Imagine if every single teacher in the nation refused to implement NAPLAN
A5 The high school of tomorrow has a flexible timetable and learning environment. Heavily project based. I also get a pay rise.
A5) Personalized, meaningful, relevant, greater access around the world
As well as a reference that doesn’t rely on internet or electricity. Some schools need that.
A5 Fluid, engaging, creative, collaborative, changing, supportive, challenging, growing, world thinking, caring!
A5. A return to integrated units (rich tasks) that evolve from S interests with real world applications. https://t.co/usFvBQ8JsV
A6 Imagine if all all schools were filled with teachers as passionate as our PLN
A5: I'd just like to see the end of the industrialised model that encourages mindless obedience. My vision of the future is blurry
A6: .. where was no school of tomorrow!
A5 A curriculum based on 'learning progressions' rather than aged-based standards
A5 Time built into the day for teachers to meet collaboratively and build their practice
A6. Imagine if every single teacher asked Ss - what would you like to learn about today?
A5. Schools which 'work/fit' the kids that attend them
My point exactly! This is where I'm at right now. My students are missing out.
Ha ha because I'm short? lol
I agree, I rarely sit at a desk, even in my office, love being in the classroom, any 1
Imagine if there was no HSC that ruled every minute of high school curriclulum
A6. I'm leaving the sentence unfinished. I like the idea that we don't have to put boundaries on the possibilities for learning.
Q6:Students tailored/personalized the curriculum 2 their aspirations & interests!! How amazing would that b!!!
A6. Every child came to school with things they wanted to learn and a plan for how they wanted to do it.
A5 Changing daily as students needs change
A6: Students controlled content delivery. Would our classrooms be different?
We all would learn together https://t.co/EGUtsrPR0L
A5. Modular, and facilitated by people as keen to learn as the students are.
Imagine if every Ss said my teacher listens to me and my ideas. I love designing my own learning journey.
Imagine engaging, creative, collaborative, changing, supportive, world thinking environments of learning https://t.co/xBZjrIpPYM
haha yes, don't talk to me about internet issues!
Hsc the biggest game of all https://t.co/Vdx6LqiZNT
Imagine if there was no HSC that ruled every minute of high school curriclulum
A6 What a wonderful world that'd be! Full of inspiration and a genuine passion for education! https://t.co/apaNjoJQ8e
A6 Imagine if all all schools were filled with teachers as passionate as our PLN
A6 Imagine if.... education leaders and politicians would LISTEN: like we ask our students to do every day!!!!!!
.My 5/6 yr old Ss use mini indiv whitebds for writing wds etc & ipads.Need to be able to write name too
sounds like sudbury schools
A6: Imagine if...every school had a learning laboratory where teachers could practice digital teaching skills and learn together.
Imagine if educational policy was constructed by passionate educators who understand students and learning
I call it... the dot point lottery
A6 Imagine if all Ss came to school well fed and loved, more than just at School, had been read to as babies, and felt wanted.
A6 - Imagine if every school used Maths 'N' Movement - more PE, more STEM, more group work, more fun - sorry blatant plug : )
A6. (cont.) I also realise that's somewhat of a cop-out answer. I'm standing by it.
A6 Imagine if teachers were trusted & empowered to grow their own practice & given voice in schools & systems.
A6 imagine if kids are allowed to be kids where learning is not forced and tested all the time
A6 imagine if students moved up only and when they were ready and not when they had to no age or grade-based ed
A6. Imagine if...all the hurdles were removed!
AMEN!!!! https://t.co/TUGwpiXMNr
A6 Imagine if teachers were trusted & empowered to grow their own practice & given voice in schools & systems.
IB PYP is a great example of this
A6B ...universities had their own test & high schools didn't have stressed out kids waiting for their ATAR https://t.co/KL6cIrqGZy
A6-... there was no education minister (or bureaucrats) but a Ministry of Learning with teachers, students & community members
No, all floor-sitters are welcome! LOL
A6 Imagine if we asked Ss 'what is your dream?' and took it from there
A5: imagine a 'choose your own adventure' style curriculum?! Haven't really thought that one through, though!
A6. Imagine if all Ss loved going to school because they were loving learning
Imagine if... teachers, students, families and the wider community saw themselves all as co-designers of learning?
A6: …education and meeting student needs had no political and budgetary constraints.
I feel very fortunate to feel I have this already in my current school! If only everyone did!
That would be brilliant!!!!
Nice Leonie, this is how whiteboards should be used, less effective at the hands of Ts IMO.
Absolutely. But we don't necessarily need to all learn the same thing at the same time. It's hard to facilitate though.
That would be me now - I am sitting on the floor of my office.
A6 Each morning kids woke thinking 'I can't wait to get to school!' & when they got there it was not disconnected from life
A6: Imagine if we hadn't connected on
How so? I still see ancient fossil computers and not many of them in my school with no dedicated digi budget...
So wanted to follow this chat tonight but alas too over
A6 Imagine if systems stopped measuring what can be easily measured, & stopped judging teaching & learning on standardised tests.
Nothing is impossible. It will probably be the norm one day!
A6 Imagine if ts only concern was the learning of their ss &everything they did was focussed on responding to their learning needs
Imagine if... We just did all these awesome things that we are all saying! (I think there are a few that we actually do!) :)
A6C ...every T got on board the bus of innovation & Ps supported the same bus too without fear. https://t.co/KL6cIrqGZy
A6 we could just teach without checking off a long list of requirements or keeping EVERYONE other than students happy
have bee trying to do this in Australia. The jury is still out on whether they have been successful
Does anything tomorrow make sense today?
A6: Imagine if we were trusted as educators and not given 5 million curriculum planner boxes to tick.
It's up to yourself to find the meaning of that, there is many thing behind those 6 words..
an option. We would all be out of a job
I think in a lot of ways, yes. I never thought that schools would still be similar to when I was a kid, but they are.
A6: Imagine if we all listened more effectively.
Skills over tasks. Need to develop the emotional, social, academic persons. A5
A6 ... all students had access to every option to learn bcs all teachers aspired to explore all avenues of teaching 1/2
I love the innovation bus! However, I think the collaboration train is even better!
. What do you want to be a policeman now? All the craze on Facebk
I believen all Ss love to learn. Our challenge is to make what we do one of those things they love. Just watch a S try new stuff
then Ss would do what they want to do
A6 Imagine if we all asked 'why more often
We do. But much is left to decision makers *not* on Twitter. And there it vanishes into ether. 😣
students could learn just as they play. A6
+ A6: Imagine if all individuals in schools saw themselves as learners, unlocking their possibly. https://t.co/viAyFigKl6
if there wasn't so much money and market forces involved in education, and student learning in the epicenter instead
A6 - Imagine if a teacher could just focus on teaching without needless administration tasks. Just fully engaged in his/her class.
A6: Imagine if we all laughed more every day! 😄😄😄
Bingo! https://t.co/cYwFo51RAr
A6 Imagine if systems stopped measuring what can be easily measured, & stopped judging teaching & learning on standardised tests.
A6) Imagine if...we focused on what Ss want to learn, when & how Ss want to learn it...how amazing would that be?
A6D ...students were free of the mental health issues (suicide, self-harm etc) that plague our nation. https://t.co/KL6cIrqGZy
A6: If every student had at least one adult they had a positive relationship with in the school. mentoring https://t.co/3yIQy50z7e
Just saw the NZP one this morning, very cool, didn't make the link until your tweet!
A6 -Imagine if - We could give our Ss exactly what every one of them needed so that they could all reach their full potential
I do, too, but I don't think it's the norm, especially not with recent developments.
A6 This is the ultimate in growth & empowerment.educators know what's right, find your voices & tell! https://t.co/4eQgnsNZBD
A6 Imagine if teachers were trusted & empowered to grow their own practice & given voice in schools & systems.
A6: Imagine a school world where less time was spent on politics and more time on getting on with it. Highlighting your strengths.
The process has started just need another 10 yrs to think. We don't like change in the outback!
Now that would be wonderful!
Oh Yes, especially in high schools. The Collaboration train is a must! https://t.co/oEWeM7I0UW
I love the innovation bus! However, I think the collaboration train is even better!
but in essences, many answers to your questions depends on how we define the word school, what is that word was erased
it drives me nuts! We're not in the business of making excellent test-takers.
Great idea, the grade ultimately means less for learning than the assessment criteria.
that's a great reality/progress check for a school. Ask students to name an adult in the school who cares about them
Yeah, IB is great fun to teach! So many fantastic opportunities for service learning and action!
A6: Imagine if school was like life then education would grow organically according to personal interest, effort and opportunity
A6. Imagine if...all grades, bells and timetables were removed
A6 If learning styles myth would die?
A6: Imagine if all students felt that their voices could really make a difference when it comes to their learning opportunities.
GREAT CHAT! Learnt heaps! PLN legends all of you! 💤💤💤😔😔
I don't use my desk in the classroom. I I have no need for it
Yes, exactly. Sometimes it feels like we are teaching students to be great at that, without letting them learn.
i could die as a happy man, then my time comes..
little by little cool as long it's forward, don't want to get lost in the outback!
it would not b hard if it was sop ported expected and led based a a clear vision
Just finished Mother's Day dinner in time to join last part of
A6 imagine if 'we had no walls' - both physical AND metaphorical...and no doors. Imagine that!
I get the point, but surely we all have 2c we'd throw at trying to improve things. Perhaps the way... 1/2
A7: to shut up and listen!
Imagine schools like High Tech High, students highly engaged by spectacular learning See MLTSFilm https://t.co/67NC98ygjI
and built in goal setting!!
So true for the individual and the collective and for now and the future.
it would be gr8! Ss electing subjects they like and not entirely for ATAR pts
The UK equivalent of was brilliant! Live was a great day.
A6:imagine if our schools were not ruled and judged by our local community by test results
A6 Imagine if there's no testing, it isn't hard to do, no As or Ds, smiling children too... woohooooo
A7 That she/he be an educator!
Ah, like a complete redefinition of the concept of school...
No even for book storage! LOL
A6: Imagine if you walked in my shoes before and saw our school through my eyes. We all might view things a little differently.
A7 to spend a week in a school as a student and see how it feels like
A7: Why??? No specific question. I think that relates to almost anything he says about education at the moment.
... we hear from and (dare I say it) take on what these voices have to say is the first step.
Super Late Gonna do some speed answering!
.A6Tht Govt viewed Education wth the same passion & value that Ts did& funded accordingly so possibilities were endless
A7. Fund schools based on needs - not on test results. Reinstall teachers as the experts in our fields.
imagine if we had the resources needed to support these kids
A7: Bring teachers to the table.
A6: ... we (Ts and Ss) weren't afraid to make mistakes or lose face.
A7 - Come teach my class for a day and then see if we need more money?
them to resign and be honest of their lack of pedagogical understanding. Ask them to sit in a class for one day! A7
A6 This is the ultimate-remove ATARs & judge Y12 students on potential including https://t.co/d2l6MrpWUe
A6B ...universities had their own test & high schools didn't have stressed out kids waiting for their ATAR https://t.co/KL6cIrqGZy
A7 That she/he listen to educators & value them as professionals
3 hours goes@by quickly each week
A7 - to do four years at uni, 19 years as a teacher and then make correct decisions for students
A7 are you embarrassed getting paid so much to do the job you are doing?
A6 2/2 & more $$ bcs engaging minds in inspiring spaces w/ creative thinking, good tech & awesome teachers matters most
A6E ...the start and finish time of my school didn't depend on the local buses but on the needs of Sts. https://t.co/KL6cIrqGZy
Imagine if all you wonderful people would come west with your PD opportunities!! We have a great pub!! https://t.co/C2tIAFkWYh
A7: Some more money, please?
YES. A clear vision makes such a difference. Even if you don't agree with it then at least you know what to agitate for
Yep, some in the dept have been out of the real teaching world too long
Have to get the day started, but thanks to everyone for welcoming me as I jumped into the middle of ! Great conversation! 😀
A7. Ask them to spend a day in our shoes to see what really happens not just 9-3 but 7-5 or later.
again that is a possibility, but again your are defining the word school..
A6 Imagine if-we were able 2 just teach Where everyone felt that they had a voice & that learning was about learning & not agendas
We still have a set timetable and set lunch times. Just no bells interrupting learning through the day
A7. Place education at the top of the budget agenda. Invest in education 2 save on social security funding.
would love it but I'm on retreat all week!
A7 That she/he be interested in educational research & best practice
This is a great point we need a culture shift not a new system https://t.co/VGyyu7AOSs
A5 it is not a system but a culture of learning. Systems standardise!
I think that asking for more money for education isn’t going to necessarily make for better education choices. Redesign needed.
A7 What will he do to celebrate and support great teaching and quality learning rather then continue a dialogue of deficit
A7 - How will funding be geared towards enhancing Ss opportunities to experience new technology to match curriculum
I did meet our dear minister once, after one question she was confused, I was allowed no more! LOL
I did meet our dear minister once, after one question she was confused, I was allowed no more! LOL
That's the dream - come and spend a day in our shoes!
Need to go! Happy mum's day to all, thanks, been fun as usual.
Q7 Let's drop grades on report cards in primary school and let students show you what they know and can do authentically
we got it right in our classroom through collaboration and then collaborated some more.
A7) Rather not ask Hillary or Donald Trump any Qs, they'll just focus on themselves, lie, accuse the other https://t.co/wHZPLU3u0C
and imagine if we measured what we value rather than value what we measure. In fact, do we have to measure what we value?
A7 - Q. Guess how many Ss in my class were born after my IWB and computers were installed? A - All of them. Get with the program!
A7 Here's an evidence based, widely commended policy for equity in education. When will you https://t.co/uHhuKtasYa
Yes and without a minder or advisors!
A7 Ed should be the most imp infrastructure in our budget priorities. Not more $ just better priority position.
A7 plz cum take sum uni courses I'm takin & see what im supposed 2 learn & then cum on prac and c what I need 2 know
Q7: when was the last time you were in a classroom consistently b4 creating ur policies?
A7: It's a bit cheeky....pass a set of Year 9 NAPLAN tests.
A7. Can I ask more than one question?
She was whisked away rather quickly. Probably because my q was evidenced-based, she was flummoxed. Cameras banned!
.A7 Listen to the Ts in the classrooms & the Ss. Not people who aren't involved in daily T & learning. Then make decisions
A1 Change. A2 Teach less. A3 We care about students. A4 Tech used purposefully. A5. Adaptive. A6. Teachers learned from each other
A7. Who determines your worth as a politician? Shouldn’t Ts have the same judges as they serve them, not politicians?
A7: Could we not design a more integrated curriculum with fewer expectations and more meaningful connections across subjects?
A7. How does making my Year 12 class sit a 3 hour exam after 13 years of schooling define their worth as students?
I love it when past and present "drop in", pretend to hate but they know!
I'm in the same position, always enjoying catching up late
A6 Imagine if politicians recognized educators are debating what matters at 9.20pm Sunday evening?
predicting that school will be a relic and systems of learning reconstructed
I will sum this up. Imagine if we stopped asking why?
My aim this week was to brave up, keep up with an tweet night, & participate! What fun! Great discussions!
My aim this week was to brave up, keep up with an tweet night, & participate! What fun! Great discussions!
I enjoy 's work around cultures of testing. Lots of good questions & advice for nations.
just answered 6 questions in 140 characters. Serious brevity.
